Tuesday scent of the day 7/4

Posted by Robin on 4 July 2017 178 Comments

Fitz And Floyd Statue Of Liberty Mini Teapot

Happy Fourth of July! (If you're wondering what people in the US do on the Fourth of July, Reuters explains: Americans celebrate July 4 with leisure and gluttony.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I’m wearing a light spray of Perfumer H Orange Leaf, again.

Reminder: on 7/7 we're doing Sports Friday...wear a sports scent! If you just can't go there, wear the sort of fragrance you think one might actually wear while doing something sporty.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Fitz And Floyd Statue Of Liberty Mini Teapot is about $10 on Amazon.

SL Rousse, which I wore on a whim: today should be too hot for a spicy oriental but Rousse has a strangely cool quality, like incense burning in a catacomb or an unlit menthol cigarette.

Happy 4th, NSTers! Hope vacation is fab, Robin. Alas, SOTD will be the tenacious but effective Eau de Cutters. There’s a party next door that sounds like it’s cookin’:

    Happy 4th folks!

Surfing (the sample/decant sea) in Absolute Pour le Soir. I had made the faulty assumption that this was a cold weather /winter scent. In the heat of July it blooms on my scent eating skin like soft creamy sweet honey and all the sex/skank that it presented in the winter is no longer there.

Happy 4th of July from a Polish friend.

Another crisp summer day today. There was some occasional rain too.
I’m wearing Sweet William from Carner Barcelona today as I’m trying to come up with a blog birthday giveaway theme.

This warm humid day will probably call for VETTIVERU. Cheers, all.

Dziekuję! In honor of you I had bigos and zurek for dinner yesterday ???? My neighborhood was historically mostly Polish so still plenty of Polish restsurants and bakeries. I was happy to see a Polish clothing chain(Greenpoint) named after my neighborhood when I visited Krakow!

Happy 4th of July. I am wearing TDC Sel de Vetiver. Watching Wimbledon in the morning, couple of hours by the pool later and back home early evening to watch fireworks from our window. There is a display at the park 2 blocks away from us, so every year we enjoy them with a glass of wine.
Have a nice and restful day everyone!

Oh, nice that there’s fireworks near you. And from the comfort of your own home is even better. We had an apartment a blick from the east river and used to be able to watch from the roof. That was nice. Enjoy your day!

Thank you! I thought Macy’s had fireworks in the East River this year. 2 years ago we went to Long Island City and it was really beautiful! The ones near us are very nice and we do not have to be bothered with the crowds. Enjoy and have a nice day today!

They do, but we can’t get to the roof in this apartment. Our old building here now has its view obstructed by some monstrous high rise luxury building that’s gone up on the waterfront. The neighborhood has changed a lot since we first lived here in 2000. LIC is a great place for viewing.

The views in Greenpoint and LIC have been affected by all those new high rise luxury buildings. I work in LIC and love to see all the wonderful transformation in the area. We also lost the beautiful view from our office building.

Happy 4th everyone! The holiday where we Americans like to make a lot of noise and blow stuff up. I love it. Unfortunately, can’t do that in the city, so a picnic may be in order. And hopefully later this evening watch the professionals handle the explosions.

But…we start the day with the traditional viewing of The Tour. I don’t think I have a scent that smells of road, grass, Lycra and sweat. (And I don’t really consider that a gap…) So, we will just go with green and a celebration with Le Temps d’une Fete. Partly as a thank you to the French for their crucial role in our independence. Merci!

On the theme of sports and perfume, there is a Nicholai Parfums Createur that was originally named Balle de Match, the French term for a match point in tennis. It’s now called Eau de Sport.

In her 2006 review, Robin recounted:

“Balle de Match is the fragrance that I credit (or blame, as the case may be) with starting me on the path to perfume addiction. Looking for a new citrus scent back in the fall of 2003, I wandered innocently into the fragrance forum at Makeup Alley. My first big discovery was that you could order samples online. How convenient! My second big discovery was that getting a handful of new fragrance samples in the mail every so often was really rather fun. After testing several such handfuls, Balle de Match took honors as my first full bottle of niche fragrance.”

The rest is history. Thank you, Balle de Match, for Now Smell This!

I’ve been considering Balle de Match for this week as well. It’s a great fragrance and I distinctly remember that review. I blame Robin and Victoria (Boisdejasmin) for my perfume addiction :)

        Or credit! :)

Yes, to be honest, I came upon NST while searching for information on probably more than one perfume, and then NST and The Guide played a role similar to MUA for Robin. There are definitely bottles on my shelves owing to Bois de Jasmin, too.

And I thought I ought to pack it to wear on Friday, but then decided I did not want to bring any full bottles, and too busy to decant. So I haven’t any with me!

The other funny thing is that if it had been called Eau de Sport to begin with, I probably never would have tried it.

Hermes Un Jardin Sur le Nil and loving it.

Reuters’ summary of the day in the U.S. seems a bit harsh – yes, leisure, I started the day with a run. Would attend fireworks but packing for our move and the moving truck comes FRIDAY ACKKKKK. I will go to a picnic briefly but won’t be gluttonous. Isn’t food a part of every country’s holidays?

Anyway, happy 4th to my fellow U.S. perfumistas and happy Tuesday to everyone else!

I thought it was a bit harsh also….or at least unnecessarily snarky. One of my favorite things is small/medium town parades. And, yes, pancake breakfasts at the local fire house.

Ditto this. It seems America was historically described as a country of hard working, mostly honest people who looked out for their neighbors as well as thier country. Now it’s very in style to bash America and Americans. Not to get political, as the truth is always somewhere in the middle. But I’m really TIRED of all negativity. All countries have an unpleasant dirty underbelly. Pretty sure there is no Utopia anywhere.

You reminded me how much I loved the little neighborhood parades we had when I was a girl. It was so exciting to put red, white, and blue streamers though our bicycle tires and ride around. Potluck barbecues, and sparklers. I have to call my brother now, and reminisce.

My son-in-law told me that the theme of every Jewish holiday was “They tried to kill us, we survived, let’s eat.” That’s a bit of an oversimplification (yeah, just a bit), but I think that is often the theme for every celebration if you dig deep enough.

Gluttony? That’s Thanksgiving, not 4th of July! ;-) Seriously, my 4th of July is usually a pretty healthy eating day: all those wonderful summer fruits and vegetables (mmm…garden fresh tomatoes, corn on the cob, blueberries and raspberries – so good).

My leisure will be sitting inside reading (because heat, humidity, and mosquitoes are in abundance) or hanging out by the pool. Then I’ll do my volunteer stint at the shelter – employees are off today, so volunteers are cleaning, feeding and walking animals.

There will be a parade in the early evening with the kids riding their decorated bikes and the high school band marching. Fireworks to follow. That’s a pretty standard 4th of July evening in medium/small town US. Big town or small, I hope my fellow Americans enjoy the day!

Today it’s vintage ‘Égoïste’ by CHANEL from May 1991. The top notes are sort of gone and it is extremely animalic. Despite this the drydown is so beautiful and deep – the sandlewood is spectacular. I will say that the most recent reformulation is really good, too – not packing so much punch but it is extremely well done and I love wearing that version as well.

Testing from my sample vase today (I don’t have enough to qualify for a sea, pond, or even sink, lol). Anyway trying Good girl gone bad. It is reminding me of JHaG Romantina. Which I like very much, but hasn’t held my interest. Same as this one. Good thing since it is so pricey. Happy 4th to all that celebrate!

Post yardwork and clean up, filthy and sweaty, showered, and have now spritzed generously with Mazzolari Vetiver courtesy of a kind NSTer.

This is lovely stuff- first a whiff of sweetness, then surprise- a gentle breeze of cool refreshment, morphing into a wonderful cozy warmth. Perfect for a blasting hot and humid day where, during the heat of the day, nothing stirs but insects. Even the bugs drone lazily and halfheartedly at noon time.

I would like to light a candle for the person who invented A/C.

On my third perfume today, L’eu de Chloe, this is my ‘Rose lemonade’ perfume, very pretty and refreshing, and has held up pretty well in the heat today.
I re sampled Le jardin sur Le toit this morning, I like it a lot, but it doesn’t project or last on my scent eating skin. It reminds me of YSL In Love Again. When that had faded I finished my sample of Corsica Furiosa, which I love, but those wonderful green top notes don’t last too long. I might get a discounted bottle if I see one tho.

It’s supposed to be warm and dry here, and some folks nearby are already setting off fireworks at 9:30 am. I’ll bring the dog in a little later. Fireworks don’t scare him but they hurt his ears and disturb his very important naps. I’m wearing Bronze Goddess this morning, a sporty scent if your sport is slathering yourself with suntan oil and drinking a Pina Colada by the pool.

    Wish I had a pool.

Happy 4th to those who celebrate!

SotM = Arielle Shoshana EdP from my almost empty sample vial. It’s a wonderful perfume, delicious and beautiful. Hats off to all who work hard and follow their dreams, our world needs you!

Yesterday evening was the neighborhood bike parade with a make your own ice cream sundae station at the finish line. Today is for marking the 4th of July with cheeseburgers (ingredients from Costco, that most wonderful/awful of American shopping experiences) and watching the city’s fireworks display. Also we will eat birthday cake for the two July birthday boys in the extended family. I’ll sit on the couch with Dad to watch Angels baseball and wear a bit of Angel muse from a sample.

Hope everyone finds a moment of sweetness and joy in their day.

SOTD is Essence of Chi “Wood”, the second of five scents based on traditional Chinese elements. Apparently one of them should suit the wearer particularly well.

    Top: lemon, grapefruit and cedar;
    Mid: bamboo and cabreuva;
Base: sandalwood, oakmoss and guaiac wood.

It reminds me of nothing so much as methylated spirits. So, I think I am safe in saying that I wood not. ;^P

    Happy 4th of July y’all. :^D

Happy Fourth to those who celebrate!

S(port)OTD = surfing the sample sea (idea stolen from Holly)
I would like to take advantage of the 20% off at Twisted Lily FIREWORKS20. YOU, YOU and YOU, what are YOU waiting for?

Berdoues Vanita Moorea – almost a dupe for … are you ready? Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar. With the discount, VM comes to $0.64 per mL, vs. $2.26 for MPN (or $1.81 if you get a 20% discount which you can get depending upon store promotions). Since I already have MPN, I don’t need this so money saved (OK, not really, but let’s say money saved to be used for something else).

Berdoues Russkaya Kozha – powdery…OUD? Fragrantica does not list oud but that is what I smell. Pass.

In other news…I tend to read my newspapers in spurts. From the New York Times:

    – Forget the ambulance – Call the Drone: “Swedish researchers found that drones launched from a local fire station arrived within about five minutes at the homes of 18 people who had experienced cardiac arrest – almost 17 minutes faster on average than ambulances”

    – Tips for Job Interviews:
    1. Be authentic
    2. Know the workplace culture
    3. Be confident
    4. Prepare to be on screen
    5. Be inquisitive
    6. Develop a rapport

Good question! The drone carries a defibrillator and it assumes someone is there to administer it. It won’t help a heart attack which is caused by a blockage whereas cardiac arrest is a disturbance in the electrical rhythm of the heart and can be helped by a defibrillator.

Have you gotten to the Oud al Sahrraa decant yet? Ironically enough there is oud in the name and the notes listed but it smells very sweet and balsamic to my wonky nose…not really getting the oud.

Happy Fourth of July (or just regular old July 4, if you aren’t in the US) to everyone today!

I’ll be going to over to a friend’s for a cookout (am I the only one who uses that term?) and fireworks this evening. I have my contribution (Texas Ranch Beans) simmering away on the stove top, and am about to go out to re-pot some plants. From the sample blowout I received from a lovely NSTer, I have on a dab of Mendittorosa ALFA on one wrist, and on the other… Roja Dove’s Tutti Frutti Sweetie Oud.

Not sure what I’ll wear post-shower — but it won’t be oud, frooty or otherwise! I actually wish I had some Demeter Gingerale — I’d pull it from the fridge every 10 minutes or so and spritz lavishly…

You’re not the only one who uses that term. I’ve known people from the Midwest and from New Jersey who do. Where are you from originally? On the west coast we generally say “barbeque,” which occasionally causes confusion as we use the same term for barbeque, the southern cuisine.

I grew up in the South, and as you noted, for us the word “barbecue” meant the meat. :) I think we used the term cookout more for the kind of event where you had grilled hamburgers and hot dogs in the back yard…

Happy 4th to NST-tites in the US. Here we have no holiday, and no summer either, just cold drear.

What I want to do is do back to bed for a bit, then take a brisk walk, then come home and go back to bed, and work from beneath my duvet. I’d like to perfume myself with six more of the samples from Foxbin’s astounding gift, and learn some more scents. What I have to do is attend A Grown Up Meeting (how dull!) and be civil to some very silly people (how difficult!) and recommend a course of action about a programme in which I have no interest (how dangerous!). The perfume helping me in this endeavour is Queen,,because it’s one of my favourite cheap thrills. It’s warm, sweet and woody, a perfume more handsome than pretty, if you see what I mean. I’m wearing a black dress and commando boots. Actually, no Commando worth his salt would ever be caught dead in these boots, but I love their satisfying “clomp” and the miscellany of zips and other bits of business. Queen the dress and the boots are working together in a very satisfactory way.

    Be well, all.

Happy Birthday, America! I started off the day with the community pancake breakfast, and an American perfume: Dame Verbena, Freesia, and Musk. Heading out soon to our community parade, aka The Shortest 4th of July Parade In America: the route is about 1000 ft long (maybe). Two fire engines, a few decorated cars, and a bunch of kids on bikes. It takes them longer to line up than to do the parade. :)

We were in Iceland a few weeks ago for their Independence Day. Rather different than the US – more of a street fair; no parades or fireworks. We quite enjoyed it :)

Fun thing to look for in Reykjavik: someone is gluing little toys to the street signs and buildings all over the city. We spotted Garfield, a fox, a penguin from ‘Madagascar’, a smurf….

Enjoy the holiday, fellow Americans, and happy Tuesday to the rest.

Oh – and a quick story. I got a bottle of Shalimar PdT in the mail yesterday. I sprayed some on, anticipating rapturous wafting, and got a big whiff of hot metal and something acrid. I was utterly perplexed and wondered briefly if someone had gone to the trouble to make a counterfeit 1/2 full bottle to sell for $25 (dubious.) A few minutes later, my husband reminded me that my mom was cleaning the oven, explaining the smell that was permeating the house. WHEW!

        Thanks!
It is a far and away cheaper substitute for Narcisco Rodriguez edt, just picked up a 3.4 oz bottle for $18.99. :)

I’m in Passage d’Enfer, first time I’ve tried this one. Now I see why everyone loves this one, and now I love it, too!

We’ve had out of town company all weekend, and the last bunch left a couple of hours ago. It’s very quiet around here…

I love that moment when everyone has just left and you can sigh and relax. :-)

Happy holiday to the Americans here! I’m enjoying my day off in Pharrell Williams Girl again, because it was just so darn good yesterday. We woke up late, had an enormous brunch, and are prettifying our home until we go for a rooftop picnic tonight, from where we will see the fireworks :)

I’m back from my Ohio-Chicago trip and so happy to be home! I missed NST. Today I’m wearing Premier Figuer Extreme and smelling delicious. Had a leisurely wake up and breakfast at home, then walked to our favorite Korean restaurant in the neighborhood for bibimbab. Ran into Goodwill for a few min and left with a new small black leather crossbody purse in good condition. Will spend the rest of the day relaxing before going back to work tomorrow. Luckily, we can see fireworks by just walking outside our apt. Brats and red potatoes for dinner later, yum.

Happy 4th to the NSTers in the US! Been a good day here! A few beers with friends at a local brewery and then a cookout and fireworks with more friends. Definitely have to get back on track with the healthy eating tomorrow. 8O

Making the way through some Jo Malone samples and was in Orris and Sandalwood today. I’m really enjoying this one. Gotta decide which juice to take with me to Abuquerque Thursday. Going to try to include something sporty for Friday!
