Thursday scent of the day 6/22

Posted by Robin on 22 June 2017 243 Comments

Yay, Almost-Friday! Plus, it's Onion Rings Day and Chocolate Eclair Day - there's lunch. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Guerlain Terracotta Le Parfum from Jessica's Top 10 Summer Fragrances 2014.

Reminder: On 6/23, wear one of your "top 10 of summer" fragrances (unless it's winter where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of winter" scents).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In a dab of Dame Perfumery’s Black Flower Mexican Vanilla (perfume oil version). I must admit, I like his style. This is really lovely stuff.

Very warm and comforting patchouli and musk. Sweet, but not not too sweet.

Agreed, I get a hint of spiciness in the drydown. Mid-development I got an unfortunate latex note — but this is something my nose does to many perfumes with creaminess to them, so it’s definitely a YMMV situation.

I like his style too!!! There are two bottles of BFMV floating around our house….several other full bottles, lots of decants and lots of samples! And Mr. Dame is the loveliest and most generous indie perfumer I have ever met….real class act :)

I look around ebay occasionally for the PdT but have only seen small mini dabber bottles. Did it ever come out in a full-size spray?

    SOTD is .vero.profumo “Kiki EdP”.

    Top: bergamot, citron and passionfruit;
    Mid: lavender and geranium;
    Base: Musk, patchouli and caramel.

I quite like how this pairs lavender (which, for me, verges on the dull as a perfume note) with passionfruit. I’m not as enamoured by the caramel and I think that overall this perfume is too sweet for my tastes, although not a sugarmonster per se. And perhaps, to my nose, a bit too womanly to be comfortably unisex.

That said, all the .vero.profumo varieties are described as ‘for women’. To my nose Onda, Mito and even Rozy could easily be considered unisex. YMMV.

I intended to wear Eau du Fier as it’s both strange and great in summer, but I keep it in the bottom of my fridge and couldn’t be bothered to dig for it, so I’m now wearing Sables instead. Gorgeous and unique.

Sables sounds wonderful, I think it’s discontinued tho, as they never have it at AG counters in London. The review in The Guide is excellent, I think it gets 5 star. AG seems to discontinue all its unique scents, so frustrating!

Not yet, austenfan, but I certainly wouldn’t rule it out! We haven’t found a way to legally ship fragrance anywhere other than Canada for under $100 yet, but hopefully we can find a European retailer in the near future. Thank you for asking!

Today, I’m wearing a grab-and-go fragrance. Running late today after a sick day, I didn’t have time to think about what I wanted to wear. So, I went into my decant box and applied the first one I pulled out. Luckily it turned out to be Dame Bergamot, Jasmine & Labdanum. I noticed several people wearing Dame in the comments. Has anyone tried the new one, Monsoon?

I am curious about Monsoon too…someone wore it not too long ago.

I recently ordered it in the 5ml sample. It wears very quietly at first, more quietly than Dark Horse or Black Flower Mexican Vanilla. It’s an earthy floral overall, to me. Definitely iris, cedar and what I think is creosote. I’m still not all that good with identifying notes. ????

Shalimar Light for me today. Good version for summer! Although it’s chilly and stormy here today, so I could have just worn the real deal.

I enjoy my MIL’s visits, but man, it really gets you out of your routine when you have company doesn’t it?

Yesterday Kevin wrote about a rose scent that reminded me I’ve been trying to buy the quarter-ounce spray of Rose Anonyme at Sephora for months and months now. I was on the verge of ordering it from the website when I noticed you could check local availability, so I entered my postal code and sure enough, the store has it. I went in this morning on my way back from the dentist and it was as usual nowhere to be found, so I asked a sales clerk, who (after some prodding) opened a storage drawer and there were THREE of them. She handed me one and then closed the drawer without bothering to put the other two on the shelf where people could, you know, buy them.

Anyway, not my problem. I’m FINALLY in Rose Anonyme and it is glorious: if I had to be honest, I would say, sotto voce, that it’s better, or at least I like it better, than any of Serge Lutens’ three roses, and I’m a colossal fan of his. But this is exactly my kind of rose.

Starting the day off with Incense Blanc, a perfume oil from Soivohle. It’s surprisingly bright – I don’t get any of the “cool, dark, and smoky” vibe that I usually associate with incense. It’s also spicy. I like it – it’s an unusual take on incense, and despite its distinct sense of being light and bright, it is very calming.

I love it and succumbed and bought a bottle. (Pricey, but the bottle is great as well as the juice.) Getting a violet that is truly violet but not overly sweet, with that dry suede side, is just so rare in my experience. It and I Miss Violet are my favorite violet perfumes of the moment.

I began the day in Tabacco Toscano – I received a unsolicited sample of it when I ordered a bottle of Nostaligia for my husband. It’s lovely! I really enjoyed it, but it didn’t last through my shower. Now I’m in L’ambre des Merveilles on an unexpected cool and cloudy day, and smelling great. They’ll love me at the bank.

Well, I am all about feast or famine so after my 20+ vials of sampling (the Efflor_esce was the ONLY one that lasted on my scent eating skin…got about six to eight hours out of it) I am going with only one fragrance today…”Minion” cologne sprayed with reckless abandonment (must have done at least 30 sprays all over my body)…it is so darn hot and sticky and I was outside this morning and needed something refreshing with some oomph……the herbs in this gives it oomph and it is so addictive I may spray some more in a little while. I will be getting lots of mileage out of this one this summer!

I’m not entirely certain! I got mine online as a blind buy because I’d heard such good things about it and it was so cheap at a discounter that I figured even if I hated it, it wasn’t a big loss.

Walmart.com currently lists the 3.3 oz for under $13, so it’s probably worth checking your local big box store!

I think so too. It’s interesting and pretty but without being too big. I was at a play last night and had on a tiny bit and kept getting wafts of what smelled like No 5! Up close there are vague similarities to me. Possible it wasn’t me and was someone in the vicinity.

It’s always hard to tell in those situations ;) I went to a show last weekend and kept getting whiffs of something divine. I couldn’t really smell myself so I thought it might be my H. It wasn’t him, so I figured it was someone else in my vicinity.

After the show (when I could move around and get my nose to skin) I realized it was me (!) I was wearing Bvlgari Black and hadn’t worn it in so long I didn’t recognize it. It’s also kind of a shape-shifter on me. I actually stopped wearing it for a while because all I got was big doses of tire rubber, which I didn’t sense at all the other night.

The original has more of a lemony/citrus vibe in the top notes to me.

The current reminds me of Ostara. I swapped my bottle of Ostara away…too much pond water accord I found. ;) but I don’t get pond water from the current Eau Premiere thankfully.

I would buy the current formula…the current I am sniffing is a from a decant from an NSTer so I am not sure exactly how current…but she said it was from after they changed the Eau Premiere bottle.

Yes, I do like it! I was a bit apprehensive about trying it, tbh, because fruity scents don’t always work well for me. But AS keeps its cheerful, upbeat vibe to the end. AS, along with Bombay Bling, are two of the happiest scents I know. Ari did good!!

My daughters birthday today, she woke me up at 530 this morning to remind me, in case I forgot, lol. It’s very humid and expecting storms. Sotd is Cristalle, so so beautiful that it makes me feel beautiful. Thank you again to a generous NSTer:) Ulta sent me a 20 percent off, good on fragrance. Decisions, decisions……

I have a fair number of summery scents, since I tend toward green and probably lighter fragrances. Only recently did I add beachy items, which can be salty or lush tropical (Terracotta!) I wish my husband wore his At the Beach 1966 more…it is fabulous on him. Guess I’ll just steal it.

Today is sample day, though – courtesy of ElisaP. Carthusia Fiori di Capri. The carnation is strong in this one. Enjoying it immensely. Wondering if something named after Capri could be anything but summer. Never been there, but I just think of it as summer….

I’m wearing Aqua Allegoria Rosa Pop today. Actually wearing it.. didn’t walk off and forget like I did the other day. It’s pretty much just a skin scent now.

I’m expecting a perfume package today. I used an Amazon gift card that I’d almost forgotten about. While I mostly bought non-perfume stuff, I added a few al-Rehab perfume oils to the order. I’d never tried anything from that house, and I haven’t really explored Middle Eastern perfumes aside from the couple of Amouages that I’d tried. They were pretty cheap too, so that helped. I’m excited to see how they are.

Perhaps my first oil misfire? I took a wee half sample of cafe v into oil, as it was too heavy and intense for me (which usually means will be a brilliant oil) but this seemed a little grumbly. Then I put on a little intoxicated. And sunscreen. Seeing an experimental play on a beach. We were warned we will wade.

I love Cafe V but I find that on me it smells like everything about a coffee shop EXCEPT the coffee, if that makes sense. I get the warmth and the gourmand-ness (chocolate and vanilla especially) and that bit of skunky humidity described in the copy, but actual, dead on coffee? Nope. So odd!

I hope the experimental play is fun and that it’s a good day for wading!

SOTD: Lubins Kismet. Good stuff! A little dab’ll do ya though!

Other smelly news: Tried a Starbucks London Fog today and LOVE it!! WOW!!

Smelly news #2: I had mentioned that my in-laws went to Italy and brought back an Italian fragrance for me. My mom-in-law picked Acqua di Parma’s Magnolia Nobile. It’s absolutely gorgeous, but really strong sillage. Will have to wear on the small of my back or knees to keep the tuberose headache from happening. Other than that, it’s a real winner!

I have samples of both and they are lovely. And yes they are both a real departure of Stephen Humbert Lucas’ style. His usual perfumes tend to be Middle Eastern and I love most of them. I heard he made these two in a different style because he found love and she didn’t like the potency of his line. Panthea was created just for her. If I were to buy one of them, I think it would be Panthea.

Morning, all. Friday, = Blissday…yesterday went well, thank goodness, and the student is through with minor amendments to be made to my satisfaction, so phew! The relief is immense. I’m celebrating by wearing my Rose de Petra, which I have decided all over again that I really do love. When I opened the Luckyscent box at Foxbin’s house, I sprayed and was immediately disappointed–had a reaction of “Really? This is it?” Fortunately, the love has returned, and my only criticism is that RdeP doesn’t have enormous longevity. That might have more to do with my skin than the perfume, though. It’s an interesting more-than-rose: a soft, slightly elusive scent of rose flowers and green leaves, hot rock and cool shadows. I’m pleased I love it again, because, well, it’s a full bottle at Stephane Humbert Lucas prices.

Be well and eat chocolate eclairs. What you fancy does you much good.

I’m so glad you fell back in love with RdP. The bottle jewel gets a thumbs down and a giggle from me, but the scent is a lovely light rose. I just need more oomph.

I’m in a large quantity of Hermes Voyage EDT – i.e., just enough to occasionally faintly smell – and it is a freaking delight. I wore this during my Terrible One-Year Job and was afraid it would be ruined forever by association, but nope the power of Ellena has proven stronger than the power of my lousy boss. Haha!

Wearing a sample of vintage Caron Poivre extrait, a gorgeous rich, peppery/spicy scent! I can call this a summer scent because I like spicy scents like this one in the summer and spring when it’s warm and sunny or cool and foggy. Of course, I also like them in the fall and winter when it’s sunny, rainy, or overcast. In other words, all the time!

Fairly drenched (2x) in Guerlain Vetiver edt, which wears very quietly on me, and I can only smell right on my skin.

I’m going to the Broadway tour of Cabaret tonight and debating what to wear. Something a bit naughty seems in order. I wore Putain des Palaces to the last musical I saw, and Bvlgari Black to a jazz show last weekend. Either might fit the bill for tonight…

Oy, Inwas annoyed by Kate Moss and spent the time spewing and ended up not posting to SOTD!

Wednesday’s SOTD. = Atelier Cologne Cedrat Enivrant

Every household should have a bottle.

    Today’s SOTD = Chanel No. 5 L’Eau

    See above.

    Goodies received yesterday:
    – Aftelier Curious. I wore a dot of the parfum and…it smelled like green rubber exhaust. Need to retry.
    – A Chanel package! Those who had received a Chanel package knows Chanel makes it an absolute JOY to open it. First, the outside of the box is plain white with nary a clue that it is CHANEL – very smart! There’s a perforated pull tab so you don’t have to find a sharp object or break a fingernail in your haste to get to the contents. The inside of the mailer box has CHANEL printed so now your beart skips a beat. Then there’s sturdy white and black box with CHANEL emblazzoned on the top cover. Upon opening the lid, you see a black samples pouch with the CHANEL logo .and then finally, the item* you’ve been waiting for is nestled atop a nest of shredded paper. This is Package Porn at its finest!
