Tuesday scent of the day 5/23

Posted by Robin on 23 May 2017 305 Comments

Vintage Teapot clock

Happy Tuesday and happy World Turtle Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Kohl Gris on one arm and Blue-Green: Arnica on the other. Both are from the Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Chroma series.

Reminder: on 5/26 we're doing Under the radar — wear a fragrance with minimal (or no) sillage, or something you consider a "skin scent". (Suggested by Hajusuuri)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Vintage Teapot Clock is available at JAF Graphics in the UK, in a variety of colors, £22.99.

You know, I wear a fitbit that transmits texts to my wrist, and sometimes I think that’s too much modernity for my taste, to have my wrist vibrate and look down to see ROGER MOORE IS DEAD scroll by. Plus, a too frequent reminder of how my son is passing his time in class at school! Sending me sad texts in all caps.

Connery is my Bond as well. My devotion was such that I’d never seen a non-Connery Bond until very recently – like in the past year. Oh, wait – except the very newest ones with whatever his name is. I think I’ve seen all of those.

I highly recommend the South of France hand soaps too…
the liquid version…Cote D’azure, Orange Blossom and the Shea Butter are all favorites in my house for the smell! Also, once you get on their email list you will get notifications of percents off of various items that you use on a regular basis. I have found that they are much much cheaper than my local health food store. I will also recommend the ST Dalfour Organic Teas which run under three dollars a box. Can’t beat that!

I understood your question….so no worries! I don’t like to write negatively about any perfumes in case someone really loves something…but UdL smells like a barnyard on me…not anywhere near the JM which is clean and fresh and smells of very expensive soap. I hope someone else can chime in and offer up a more “professional” opinion as my nose can sometimes be wonky!!!!

          • Calypso says:
            23 May 2017 at 1:18 pm

I really like UdL which is a little odd because I don’t much like the smell of real linden blossoms. If you stand under some trees it smells nice for about 2 seconds and then it makes me gag. The UdL smells like a pleasant light floral with a lot of lime to it. I don’t see why it would go barnyard on you, but some of the Fragantica reviews mention a strong hay note (apparently sometimes mimosa will do that) and it says it has honey, too, which I also do not detect at all. It’s a really clean and pleasant scent on me, which reminds me of a big white magnolia blossom when you bring it indoors and it’s just all lemony smelling.

          • chocolatemarzipan8 says:
            23 May 2017 at 2:08 pm

I think Calypso has it right…my skin must be amplifying the hay note…another commenter on fragrantica said the same thing….I guess because it is a natural it wears differently on everyone …best bet Petunia is to get a sample and try it out yourself :)

          • Oakland Fresca says:
            23 May 2017 at 2:50 pm

Chiming in as someone who really likes UdL… but I can see how it might amplify different notes on different skins…

          • tiffanie says:
            23 May 2017 at 5:53 pm

Joining you in Calypso. I got a bit of tart fruits & rose in the opening but it’s settled into a light incense & patchouli. My sample says “original edt.” Is that far off from your experience?

I get a little powdery/suede vibe from it but, yeah, pretty much. I like the tartness of it. Most of the “darker” roses are too sweet for me.

What do you think of Coromandel edp vs edt?

Thanks so much for all the good wishes for my daughter’s graduation yesterday! We did get wet but not until after the ceremonies and celebratory lunch, and we had already moved much of her clobber that would be going home with us, so it was all okay. The ceremonies were really wonderful and I only got sniffy once. So proud of her.

She will be staying in New Haven to be a summer dorm counselor as well as a TA for the chem dept summer sessions, and will be pursuing a job or paid internship for a couple of years before heading for grad school.

Now driving the 10 hours home, wearing Eau Premiere. I’m grateful to you all for the support.

My scent of the moment is Theorema. I’m hoping that my week gets a little better financially because it’s been tough for the past few months. It’s meant going on no frivolous spending at all and a strict budget. If I keep working the way I have been, I will be able to get a couple small decant for cheering up. After my shower, I think I will wear no 5 today.

    Good morning Y’all….

Experiencing a wee bit of perfume fatigue….just haven’t been in the mood to wear much with the heat and humidity! It always passes though, and I come back to it ready to go again! :)

Love the tea pot clock! All my good vibes are directed toward the tea loving Brits today.

Since I seem to be getting my Fazolarris and Mazzolaris mixed up, I double checked my label this morning. SOTD is Bruno Fazzolari Au Dela Narcisse from a sample included with my recent LuckyScent order.

I THINK narcissus is a flower, right? Pretty sure I don’t care for floral frangrances, so I’m not quite sure why I LOVE this one!! Just gorgeous! Wore it to bed last night, can still smell it, and will be topping it off with more for today. Wow! I love when my perceived boundaries get busted =)

I’m very flower ignorant. Narcissistic, narcissuses, narcissi- I’m clueless ????

Ostara? I wrote that off as soon as I heard it was a floral centric scent, but now who knows what my nose will like. I’ve surprised myself. And yes! You should try this one asap ????

Supposedly a modern chypre. IMO, very green with a light underlying sweetness. It isn’t a biting green scent.

This one is a “white floral chypre” according to his website. Those three words scare the beejeesus out of me! It’s a good thing I didn’t read that before pouring it on myself. It’s really lovely, and not to enable, but he has a very reasonable priced ($30) spray sample pack on his site as well.

I am tempted but already own Au Dela. I’m not sure how similar they are so haven’t ordered a sample. I had the same reaction to AD that you’re experiencing with ADN. Bought my bottle within a few days of testing. Had to have it. ????

I’m doing definitely-not-under-the-radar today, in Vol de Nuit extrait. Testing Rappleyea’s suggestion (thank you, R!) to wear VdN in the heat (supposed to be close to 90 here today) – looking forward to observing its development throughout the day.

It did! VdN, especially in extrait, is so lush that it’s easy to think of it as a cool-weather scent, but in the heat it blooms wonderfully. It isn’t so heavy that it becomes cloying or claustrophobic – the heat just opens up the range of notes so that the rose and iris are more noticeable, and the spices are a bit more earthy and “forward” (if that makes sense). It lasted a good 14 hours on me today, which is about 4 more than I get from it in cooler weather.

I am wearing D&G Velvet Exotic Leather from a sample. It is nice, but the leather is so exotic that it almost isn’t there. Definitely not a leather centered fragrance, this is more about fruity notes, a bit of herbs, lavender, incense and rum. The leather is mostly in the top notes. It reminds me of La Martina Cuero.

OJ Orris Noir for me today. Funny, when I wore it on Saturday, I did not think I loved it, but today I am enjoying it quite a bit. Still not one I’ll put on the “buy’ list, unlike a few others from the discovery set.

Made me laugh, my guy is a flight test engineer and works on helicopters for the army. They were on one yesterday testing some software and one of the other guys said, “hey man, what are you wearing? It smells great.” It was OJ Isfarkand. Made my guy laugh, said he never expected to receive a compliment on how he smelled from that particular guy. Anyway, he wrote it down for him, so maybe OJ will get another purchase from Alabama. :D

I’m in AG Eau d’Hadrien today, from a mini that has a sensible, rectangular shape. The only thing I don’t like about most minis is that they are hard to store.
It’s a lovely lemony floral that’s also a bit green. It would’ve worked very well for green week!

SOTD is the last of my sample of Diptyque Eau Lente, which quickly goes to a cozy, slightly sweet powdery skin scent on me. Mmm. “Lente” was also a good way to describe my commute this morning, grumble grumble. Oh well, at least it’s lovely out!

GUYS GUYS GUYS. Do you remember that exquisite Memo music box, with the perfect little bird in it and a bottle of some Memo perfume (Eau de Memo or something)? And how it had no price written? Well–I asked for a quote, and finally got it just today, more than three weeks later (they are not in a rush). How much do you think it is?

    …$22,000!!!!!

    So. Any takers?

(SOTD: Safran Troublant. Nom nom nom.)

    Happy Tuesday!

    1) What a scorcha! I went swimming after work- which was PERFECT and I need to do this at least 2x week this summer. But I could not sleep, so I finished painting! (Up until 3 AM!)
    2) BRAGGING: My ground floor now has the inner pink glow of a seashell. All the tedious work of prep was so very worth it. I am going to put on a second coat on Wednesday- just in time for the Memorial Day holiday!
    3) SOTD: It’s shampoo-y! Rose jam body wash (used as a clarifying shampoo all over) and then Oribe Conditioner + neroli/jasmine body oil scrunched in. I smell very shower fresh today. Will probably refresh with Blue Fig perfume later on!

It’s very soft and serene looking, very relaxing actually. But this paint has a subtle glow which with the bright sunshine is very lovely indeed!

I really like Blue Fig! Alas, like many a fragrance at Anthorpologie, it’s being discontinued!

The Anthropologie I go to (which isn’t often) used to have a whole room/section dedicated to fragrance, and now it’s more like a tray near the checkout. I guess they weren’t selling.

I think that Anthropologie wants to be an all in one, higher end ‘lifestyle’ store, which includes cosmetics. The thing with the perfume offerings is that it can look to be a bit too twee OR be just too expensive to match the quality of the clothing being sold. At the store here in Portland the Anthro was selling some truly high end scents, like Jovoy and indie scents like Olivine!

I’m in Hermes Un Jardin Apres la Mousson, as I wanted something refreshing for our sunny beautiful day in the 70s. I think this is my 2nd favorite from the Jardin series after Mediterranee. I will certainly buy a travel size after I finish this decant.

Yesterday I wore the lovely Malle Lys Mediterranee.

Dilettante for my SOTD because it is a big favourite of mine and today’s my birthday! I was supposed to be in NYC today but had the worst day ever yesterday. We flew across the country but were denied entry to America on our connecting flight. Flew back home the same day. No New York. No visit to Twisted Lily. No Yankee Stadium.
We’ll have a bike ride around Stanley Park instead of Central Park. Could be worse.

I’m working through several dauber sampled (I think of these as low commitment testing opportunities as usually I cannot really understand what is going on unless I do a full sample dump — but have on occasion regretted my strategy when the perfume was really powerful!)

Last night was Amouage Bracken Woman, which was a slam dunk for me for the first 10-15 minutes, but then went into something close to gourmand territory that was interesting, but errrr diminished my pleasure. I’ll want to try it again some time to double check, but I am not exactly straining my leash for this one.
This morning I am in Ralph Lauren’s Notorious… it is nice and totally forgettable.

Thank you so much everyone for your help figuring out a present for my SiL. The hubby chose the Byredo Gypsy Water powder from my list of options, but the bonsai tree was a close second, along with an upcycled purse made out of seat belts…

And like everyone, I am feeling queasy and very sad about the news out of Manchester. All those girls my sons’ ages having a fabulous time, and then the nightmare of their lives.

      2) On Manchester: I remember being those kids’ age and going to a pop concert starring TLC back in the day. We sang along and bopped about. Because we were kids, just like those kids at the concert- and who would hurt kids.

I am wearing something I bought this past weekend, Memoir de l’Amour from Nostalgia Collection. I had never heard of this line before but tried it recently at a niche store in town and then just had to have it. It is not really up my alley as it’s kind of an ice cream cone smell comprised of vanilla, milk, peach and other fruits, but it’s just truly addictive. Really nice to wear when you go to bed and want sweet dreams, too.

I went with OJ Ormonde Man, today. I’m trying to find a summery scent that is just the right balance of brightness and warmth. I’ve been working my way through some Hermes (Jardin de Monsieur Li, Voyage, Jour d’Hermes), but those have been a bit too citrus-y and high-pitched, so I’m hoping Ormonde Man has enough warmth in the base to anchor it.

I’m wearing many many spritzes of AA Pamplelune after another morning of sampling. Nothing FBW in the bunch but I liked Les Liquides Imaginaire’s Saltus a lot, if I didn’t already have Slumberhouse Norne it would have been a contender. Not that they smell alike, but there in a resiny, incensy commonality to both.

My thoughts are with the people of Manchester this sad morning.

Both are wonderful. I gave Flopper information regarding getting 20 mL official Guerlain travel sprays (La Goutte Parfumee). I was flabbergasted when she mentioned that her source for Guerlain decants cost almost 1.5x more for half the volume (so really, almost 3x more expensive). Not all perfumes are available in this format.

Good morning, all. I’ve been having frustrating problems with my home wireless connection, and gave up on trying to post after a couple of just melted away. In perfume, though, I’ve been having a lovely time, wearing warm and rich deliciousness every day to go with my winter colours and fabrics. I wouldn’t say I’ve been under the radar, though: I’ve worn 31 Rue Cambon, Coromandel, Rose Musc (yes, I DID buy it; you knew I would!), Misia, Queen of the Night–not perfumes you would call quiet and retiring at all. And in good news, I woke a couple of hours ago to a personal email from a lovely Andrea at Luckyscent that Rose de Petra is back in stock, and I immediately ordered a bottle to be delivered to wonderful Foxbin’s house. That was serendipitous: it’s another birthday present. Today, I’m improving the world by wearing Maharani. It’s definitely not under the radar either, so I think I must be doing reverse-project week. It behoves me to get up, but I feel bone idle, and Dakkie has just appeared with a faceful of Fuzzy Logic. He seems to want to play Fetch, though he’s not very adept at it, and that’s far more fun than getting up and facing the day.

Be well, all. You smell subtly divine.

Wore vintage Lauren to my son’s doctor’s appt this morning (just routine) for green coolness. I meant to wear it last Friday, but forgot and office is supposed to be scent-free anyway. Working from home this afternoon, so wafting heavily with Queen Latifah on one arm and Angel Muse on the other. Friday will probably be a teensy spritz of The Body Shop White Musk for under the radar, hopefully only detectable by me.
Got my first membership solicitation from AARP today. Guess that means I’m officially getting old.
Shaking my head over last night’s bombing in Manchester. Who does that to a bunch of young girls?

All it really means is you can take advantage of discounts that used to only be available for the 62+ set. Way back before all the airline consolidations, United had a senior frequent flyer program (Silver Wings)? I stared getting solicited in my 20s as I share a name with my mom (mine is a diminutive of hers) and was flying cross country quite often.

SOTD and Frederic Malle #2 is “Dries van Noten”.

Notes are: guaiac wood, tonka bean, vanilla, saffron, jasmine, musk, bergamot, lemon, nutmeg, cloves, patchouli, woody notes and peru balsam.

Listen, Hajusuuri, I have a bone to pick with you! I said I wasn’t playing this skin scent game, and I picked other stuff for the 3 days I’m away this week, and hey presto the 1st two are skin scents. What witchcraft is this? Cut it out, I say! :^)

Is that a skin scent on you??? It’s belligerently loud (and gorgeous!) on me!

My skin is very special :^(

DVN reminds me of Hermes “Vetiver Tonka” – not that it smells similar, but rather that it has this almost-but-not quite-gourmand vibe. It’s a lovely scent but, on me, a practically useless perfume.

That’s a great assessment of DvN and VT; I agree! But I love both deeply :)

A friend gave me a tip where to buy Pacifica perfumes here. I was so happy to see something different I bought 3 of them. In Spanish Amber today, yum ☺

Oh Spanish Amber is a fantastic and inexpensive amber! What else did you buy? I have been wearing Pacifica for years.

My preschooler is finally (I think) turning the corner on a very long-lasting tummy bug. The whole house is tired and grumpy. :)

I am sniffing Iris Cendre and Dark Horse today…both are quite dry to my nose.

Iris Cendre is new to me. It is well done but perhaps a bit too burnt for my tastes.

Dark Horse I sniffed before and thought it smelled like spicy bubblegum which I stand by with this second sniffing. Delicious, spicy bubblegum. I am not sure I like it but I can’t stop sniffing it either.. ;)

Skin SOTD = Guerlain Tonka Imperiale

Nutty tonka and stays constant throughout the wearing. Longevity is quite good. Anothwr contender fir roday lomg the same family and price point is Gourmand Coquin!

I need to find my cheao thrill skin acent as I think it is only fair / right to surface a good mix of perfumes that enbody the skin scent category.

Oh I got a decant of that one in my bday package and I love it! Sharing it with a younger family member who is a vanilla fiend as it comes off like a nutty vanilla on her skin.

Looking forward to hearing about your cheap thrill :)

hello, perfumed people. It has been a very long day. It’s a relief to come here for a moment of calm.

SotD = Infusion d’Amande, wafting the remnants from yesterday evening’s spritzes, which is amazing tenacity for any scent from Les Infusions de Prada.

Now must think about what will be next for today . . .

Thanks, tomorrow will be much easier.

Would love to hear what you think of Infusion d’Amande. Hope you enjoy it. I think I might like Amande best of the new-ish Prada Infusions.

Onward and upward, there’s perfume that needs spritzing. :)
