Thursday scent of the day 5/18

Posted by Robin on 18 May 2017 286 Comments

orange tree

Happy Almost-Friday! It's also Tina Fey's birthday and International Museum Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in L’Artisan Parfumeur Séville à l’Aube, which really has no more than a whisper of green.

Reminder: 5/19 will be Huesday on Friday, episode 2...wear a fragrance inspired by Pantone's Color of the Year for 2017, Greenery. You do not have to wear a green fragrance — be as creative as you like with the theme! "Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate." (Huesday was originally suggested by TheGoddessRena and Olenska, and you can see episode 1 here.)

Pantone Greenery

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Reeking havoc a la Holly in epic proportions as I have returned to work and my desk is full of samples..green and violet today in-
    Carnal Flower
    Iris Poudre
    Green Patchouli
    Muguet Fleuri
    Vanille Marine
    Felanilla
    Tonka Imperiale
    Rose Oud

some I am sampling so that I can pass them on to family members who I know will love them….boy do I “stink” in the most lovely way.

And the Safari lasted well into the night on my skin and was blooming gloriously on my bathrobe this morning…what a beauty!!!!

    keep calm and reek on!
    peace love light xxoo

Is Safari still in production? Or is yours a sample from a vintage bottle? I am kind of interested in trying this one since so many here on NST have sung its praises. And the lasting power seems phenomenal…

Safari is still in production but I know it has been reformulated. I honestly don’t know if my sample was vintage or contemporary, EDT,EDP or perfume (I am guessing the perfume based on its longevity as well as the drydown being sweet which is what I remember my Safari perfume to be when I wore it in the early 1990s…it was not as sharp as the EDT to my nose). I am hoping that the “Safari” experts will chime in!!!!

            Thank you, my dear!!!!

OK folks…HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY RECOMMEND vintage EDP or the perfume as the release date of Safari was indeed 1990.

I have tried several version of Safari and can say that the more modern stuff has less longevity (on me, at least) but still smells pretty darn good.

My favorite bottle (oh dear, did I even say that? at last count, I owned three full bottles and three minis ;) ) is the 2/3 full one sold on ebay as “vintage” and labeled as “cologne” – it lasts for hours and has a lovely depth I can’t pin down, despite the three minutes of hairspray aroma at first. The parfum is not my favorite, because it is a little sweet for my taste.

But. As I say, they’re all good IMO.

Iris Poudre is gorgeous….as is the Carnal Flower which I was expecting to be a bit off putting…but my favorite from the line of the four I have thus sampled (En Passant we tried in the store on paper and the SA gave my girlfriend a sample of that) is still Eau d”Hiver.

“Show me the power child, I’d like to say, that I’m down on my knees today” RIP Chris Cornell. Haven’t put on a sotd yet because I’m still watching Soundgarden videos. Although I still smell faintly of the Poison Girl edt I tried out at Macy’s yesterday.

I saw the news on Twitter this morning and was in utter disbelief for a little bit, thinking that can’t be real. I have his last solo album in the CD player in my car. Soundgarden was kind of a formative band for me, from my high school grunge days in the ’90s. Superunknown is still a favorite album, so I’m listening to that on Spotify now.

A couple of friends of mine actually met Chris Cornell a couple years ago (or maybe it was last year.. I don’t remember exactly). They are big tennis fans and go to the Miami Open tournament every year. They met him there, and he signed their giant tennis ball that they always get for players’ autographs.

Random perfume smell from handling a lot of older samples (to log into my New Spreadsheet). I was recently treated for a longstanding sinus infection and now that it’s clear I’ve found myself super sensitive to many smells (especially some top notes & Iso E Super–like a drill to the frontal lobe) — however I’ll probably sample a dab or two of Il Profumo Vanille Bourbon in a bit.

I store the majorityof my samples in a plastic gelato container that has a screw top lid. Whenever I open it, it’s such a wonderful smell. Maybe I should pour all of the samples into an atomizer and see what happens. ????????

ha! You reminded me of childhood perfume experiments conducted at my grandmother’s house. She had so many bottles of perfume and would let me mix spritzes of them in the little pink plastic Dixie cups she kept by her bathroom sink. Oh, the stink, but I thought it was heaven.

You’re right about that smell when the lid comes off the box of samples, it’s a delight.

She looked so young, she was skinny bc of her prescription food, she looked like a kitten. She was so beautiful, and she had a great personality.

I’ve been wearing A la nuit for ten years, they didn’t change the formula it still smells exactly the same but just lighter, it doesn’t last as long as it used to be… you have to reapply throughout the day.

No scent yet, I’m headed out to Sephora today and I’m saving my wrists for there. Trying to make the most of my days off this week.

So shocked to turn on the tv today and hear the news of Chris Cornell. As a gen x-er who came of age in the late 80’s and early 90’s, grunge was the soundtrack of my early adulthood. I first saw Soundgarden in the summer of 1992 at Alpine Valley Wisconsin. When they took the stage, the crowd went nuts! People literally started ripping up the side of the hill that led down to the stage and started throwing sod. I had dirt everywhere…my hair, the pocket of my shirt, in my Birkenstocks. It was surreal, and it was incredible.
    RIP beautiful man.

SOTD is BoE with a bit of Tauer’s Amber Flush oil in my hair.

I did a little whirlwind ordering of some samples earlier in the week from LuckyScent since I had a free shipping code (great rationalization, Deva!). I’ve been feeling a bit lost, fragrance wise, without all my little lovelies languishing away at home in Florida. BoE has been a real blessing and I’m glad a purchased a FB because I think I will get tons of use from it and the cost/benefit analysis in my head makes it a completely rational purchase.

I’m sampling some I have been wanting to try for quite a while including: 4160 Tuesdays Sunshine and Pancakes as well as Maxed Out, Aroma M Geisha Vanilla Hinoki, SHL Taklamakan and Mortal Sin, the new Tauer L’eau as well as Vetiver Dance, Alahine!!!, and last but not lease, Vero Naja! I’m a little afraid of Naja, because if I fall for her like I fell for Onda, I may be financially doomed. Also bought a Tauer soap and a small 30ml bottle of Vetyver from PdN. which I have sampled a few times and have never forgotten. These should ease my perfume pangs for a good long while =)

One I really wanted to try but couldn’t remember the house or fragrance name was the tea centric one in the “elephant” bottle that I think both Robin, Chocolatemarzipan8, and a few others seemed to really enjoy. Haven’t heard it mentioned recently, but if anyone can figure out which one I’m talking about and remembers the name, please enlighten me.

    Happy almost Friday Day!

Still sleepy today! I saw Shonen Knife last night and they were incredible. The last time they were in Houston, they opened for Nirvana in ’93, but let me tell you, they rocked it out! Of course that means I got little sleep.

Picked vintage Diorella today. Maybe not as plain green as Greenery but close. I really need to get a big bottle of this.

Watching videos this morning- as madtowngirl stated, the soundtrack of my teenage years. RIP Chris Cornell.

I am in Lonesome Rider. My uncle (my mother’s brother) lived in Central Florida when I was growing up but traveled a lot roping and riding in the rodeo circuit. He always had horses and we would spend a week or two with him in the summer. He had a lot of land we would ride on and so this scent always makes me think of orange groves and horses and saddles. That’s the only real green I get from it- orange groves and palmetto of my youth. :::sigh:::

What a great association to have. I go to the rodeo every year and have a real fascination with working cowboys. And ropers in particular always amaze me – they must spend countless hours practicing, and I love the interaction between them and their horses. It’s definitely teamwork!

Yes, he was amazing to watch! He always had many horses, but we could NEVER ride his rodeo horse, Rebel. Rebel was too much horse for us kids- too high strung and spirited. Only my uncle could ride him. He lived to be about 24 and my uncle was devastated when he died. Their bond was beautiful.

Wearing Smell Bent Green Patchouli today. I rarely wear patchouli forward fragrances to work, since one of my staff always says I’m showing my age, wearing such a hippie fragrance. However, I wanted to wear something different today. I am totally lost over what to do tomorrow – go with something totally green, or something that reminds me of the spring that is heading into summer so quickly.

Twice a year someone has to come out to my school and get on the roof to change the temperature in the library. Such an efficient system.

    Hi All!

    1) Crap. I JUST found out about CC when I logged on to work! I was a teen in the 90s, so the big grunge/alt rock bands and hip hop acts really shaped what I heard and some of my aesthetic. Chris Cornell had an INCREDIBLE stage presence and a voice that could soar as well as any opera singer ), and sometimes even better (4 octaves, yo!) He fronted

    2) Am in Infusion d”Iris Iris Vetiver- perfect for a lovely warming spring day in the Pacific Northwest. Chris would have loved it. today- green and warm and filled with flowers. The seas are calm, and the whales are coming back to feed and give birth.

Also, a pipe busted in the men’s room…. ugh. This week has been long and tiring and really trying to run me down. All because I’m about to go on a long vacation far away from all this madness.
    I WILL NOT BE BROKEN!
I’m in a liberal spraying of Eau de Merveilles.

With EdM on your side, you’ve totally got this. Have you considered spritzing perfume AT people as they approach you? Heh, just kidding, but I’ve had that impulse once in a while.

You’ve reminded me of a work friend who had the plaque on her desk that says, “I can only help one person today. Today is not your day. Tomorrow doesn’t look good either.”

Enjoy your vacation. Hope it’s fabulous and fragrant.

Going green with Mark Buxton Wood & Absinthe.

The universe really doesn’t want me to go into work anymore. I mostly work from home (yay!) but got in the car this morning to drive in, and the traffic report told me that the one road I must use (the only road open after this winter’s disaster rains) is closed due to a vehicle accident. So I’m back home. When the universe starts putting its signs up in neon, you really must pay attention…

Greening it up in Fracas (thanks to flopper!) It has always read green to me, but the green of a dark, glossy banana leaf – not any of the shades depicted above. It brings the visual image of a tropical garden after a rain: lush, green, wet.

Side note: over the past few months I’ve had a hard time wearing some of my vintage frags. Not all, but most have smelled overwhelmingly of cat fur. Not in a good way, but like I have my nose stuck to a fluffy cat with fur all over my face that I can’t get off, and that’s all I can smell.

I wasn’t sure if I suddenly became olfactorily aware of animalic notes (does animalic = face full of fur?) Since my vintage bottles smelled the same way all of a sudden, I wondered if something else was going on. I had a working theory that due to all the sinus issues I have, some olfactory receptors weren’t working properly and the ones that sense cat fur/animalic notes were working overtime.

Who knows what was going on, but Fracas was one that had become difficult to wear. Today there’s a trace of furriness but it mostly smells like it used to. *fingers crossed*

That interesting re: vintage fragrances. I’ve been buying vintage – the latest were ‘1000’ and Joy, both sealed. When I first opened the bottles and smelled them, I think “is it supposed to smell like this?” They don’t smell “turned”, and eventually smell nice, but wonder what they would have been like new in the 1960s-1970s. Hope Fracas smells good for you today!

As much as I still love smelling vintage you are correct in that when they were in pristine condition with the top notes intact most of my vintage loves were glorious from start to finish….now you need to wait for the initial not so good to fade into mid and base notes as most top notes don’t survive the ravages of time.

I’m super afraid to go down the vintage rabbit hole. There’s so much current to smell and I’m afraid if I love something vintage I’ll be disappointed in the current. Thoughts?

First off, I think that there are many, many wonderful perfumes currently in production.

Some reformulations are notoriously not as good as the vintage and don’t even remotely resemble them in the least. Off the top of my head, the Caron and Dior houses have notoriously messed with their classics to ill effect, and some feel the newer Chanel Exclusifs in EdP don’t hold a candle to the previous EdT incarnations. IFRA has imposed restrictions on certain ingredients, and of course popular tastes change over time and what doesn’t sell doesn’t work for companies looking to make a profit.

Vintage is not necessarily better, it’s just different. I suspect that many people who explore vintage are vintage themselves (like me) , and are seeking familiarity and to experience what they once did and can’t find in current releases.

Like Holly said , I love vintage because I too am “vintage” (a/k/a “old”) and I also agree that there is so much excellent current stuff out there to explore …..and bear in mind that what you smell now that is vintage will smell different from what it once was 20-30 years ago when it was in pristine condition.

Kpaint, I hope I answered your question yesterday to your satisfaction… I re-read my answer and realized that I might have not gotten to the point. (Sorry.) I am not one of the resident experts on Opium, but when the bottles changed, I did notice a difference. I don’t know if the current scent is something you would like or not, so I am suggesting that you sniff now before your vintage bottle is gone. I do see a lot of the older bottles on the bay of Evil, so that is perhaps an option.

Thanks for further explanation. I’ll remember the 2010 date (maybe!) and likely buy vintage again. I did have a decant of one of the current Opium flankers – Ete something or other? and quite liked it.

As to the comments above re: buying vintage, in some cases I’ll look for older bottles so I know I’m getting the original version. I do this particularly with perfumes I already “know” (late 70s & up.) But I also buy vintage because it’s almost always cheaper!

Very happy Museum Day! I used to work in museums and I once had to help pluck the feathers off an slightly rotten emu skin prior to attaching them to a fibreglass moa body…what a job. I’ll be working in Auckland Museum all next week, looking for information about scented alpine plants. Often when you come down off the snow you get a big hit of green scent from Celery Pines.
Florists Fridge today. Feels like a fridge here . As soon as the sun rises I’ll go out and see if we have snow on the hills.

Good morning, all. I was writing a post about the gorgeous 31 Rue Cambon and why it is perfect for the day ahead, went to get a cup of tea, and came back just in time to see Dakkie settle down sitting half on the iPad. When I wrenched it out from under him, my post had disappeared. Bother! Anyway, as you will have seen, I’m in 31, and though I say it myself, I smell heavenly. I don’t know that I would call 31 green, exactly, but it isn’t pink. Or gold. Or any of the fire colours. I’ll say it’s greenly chypre coloured, or the reverse: chyprely green. One of its greatest attributes is its adaptability: it dresses all the way down to jeans and a shirt and all the way up to black velvet–I know this, because I have bought a BV dress (yes, I do know I’m hopelessly extravagant sometimes) to wear for my birthday dinner next week, and though I plan to buy La Pausa, I will wear 31, just ‘cos….hey, be well and safe, all.

I apparently have more greens than I thought! One green I love which I will not wear tomorrow, no no no in the heat, is Chypre Mousse!

Yay, I love Tina Fey! Happy birthday to her. I’m in the glorious Lonesome Rider on my fourth day of work, probably one of the last days I can wear perfume to work before I have to follow clean room rules. I also can’t wear cosmetics, and after looking around, I see that none of my female (or male) colleagues wear make-up. Oh well, I don’t really like wearing make-up anyway.

Wow. IIRC, you work in a lab? Would the use of fragrance and cosmetics compromise your work? Curious as to the rational for this. Labs are generally well vented, no?

I do work in a lab! And in general, you’re right–there’s no problem wearing cosmetics and some fragrance. But I’ve just started working in the semiconductor industry, and when making chips, you have to be careful not to let even the teeniest particles get on the wafers, or you can end up with defects. As a result, the wafers have to be made and processed in cleanrooms, which have a reduced the level of particulate matter in the air. This is partly managed by having workers wear bunny suits (silly-looking coveralls), hairnets, face masks, gloves, and no make-up/volatiles :)

SOTD and green-inspired perfume #4 is Maria Candida Gentile “Barry Lyndon”.

    Top: Green notes and grass;
    Mid: artemisia, heather and arnica;
    Base: vetiver, vanilla and leather.

I liked this one – it goes on fresh with, I thought, a touch of mint (not listed as a note), then fades away quite quickly, then comes back as a lovely dry-down that reminded me a bit of Miksado or Bois Sacre. On my skin, longevity and projection are not great.

I need to try that one again, it did not make as much of an impression on me as I expected.

It’s unseasonably warm here (though not too humid, thankfully), and I’m wearing a few dabs of something I mixed up myself. It’s mostly lavender and mint, and doesn’t have any base notes, so its life on my skin is fairly short, but it smells refreshing while it lasts.

I’m planning to wear a proper perfume tomorrow. I’ve certainly got plenty of “greens” in my cupboard to choose from!

Uuuuuggggghhhhh! Posting so late today. What a day full of blah. It’s an Ozone Action Day here, which means there’s enough around to be unhealthy for sensitive groups. Yuk.

RIP Chris Cornell. Soundgarden was part of the sound track of my college days, and my young adulthood before I got married. What a shock.

SOTD = honey-lemon cough drops, and more sprays of Opium EdT.

    SOTD = PdE Corsica Furiosa

Decant courtesy of a swap with dear Deva. It’s my first wearing of it and I think I ised just the right amount (5 spritzes from a 15 mL atomkzer so that’s probably rhe equivalent of 3 short sprays from a FB). It’s green, green, nutty, somewhat oudy with a refreshing citrus top. I quite like it!

Now I’m off to read what everyone else wore today. It was hellishly hot today in NYC. Where’s Fall other than at the Sothern Hemisphere?

SOTD is Guerlain Lys Soleia. Kind of a yellow-ish, beachy scent, really. There might be a hint of green in there somewhere. It’s starting to warm up in NW Arkansas.

Yellow-green, reminiscent of spring? My SOTD for Huesday has to be Penhaligon’s Ostara! It is one of the few scents for which I have a backup bottle, especially as it has been discontinued (why??). It really does capture the fragrance of my top favorite flower, daffodils.
