Wednesday scent of the day 5/3

Posted by Robin on 3 May 2017 318 Comments

Kristen Stewart for Chanel

Happy Hump Day and happy Sun Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm easing into honey with a dab of Chanel Beige.

Reminder: on 5/5 we're doing May-bee Baby Friday... wear a honey fragrance or one that contains a honey note. Thanks to happy888cat for the suggestion!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image shows Kristen Stewart for Chanel's new Gabrielle bag, 2017.

A La Nuit, which I forgot about for jasmine week, but it does have a note of honey too.
Hooray for Sun Day! It’s finally out this morning for the first time in a week and it’s so good to see.

Twins in A La Nuit! I will need to compare this to Diptyque’s Essences Insensees 2015 which I love. But! for the moment I’m reeking havoc in Sarrasins, La Chasse Aux Papillons Extreme and En Passant.

My actual birthday (Monday) was very quiet. We celebrated over the weekend. We had drinks and dinner in the French Quarter on Saturday. On Sunday, our kids came over to celebrate :)

My parents gave me Miu Miu L’Eau Bleue for my birthday. Its very pretty and I’ve been wearing it a lot.

I bought a bottle of Bourbon French Voodoo Love (warm, earthy and cozy) and a bottle of BF Perfume of Paradise (beautiful white floral with adlehydes) when we were in the French Quarter on Saturday.

    Hello everyone.
So today is the last day of my 5-days-long weekend. It was fun mini holidays to relax. In the evening I’ll be going to my place and off to work tomorrow.

Good news is I found a honey fragrance for Friday.

    Today I’m in Cuir Ottoman.

I am commando since I am still on my “staycation” and will sniff around at shops.
So far my damage is some soap and a cream & soap from SMN. Nozkoz gets a small enabler pin for the soap.

Homemade chai (virtually handing Robin a cup of this and my FIL to help you out) ;)

A couple drops of vintage Montana Parfum de Peau. Man, was that stuff ever good. (The top is starting to go a bit acetoney — it is thirty years old, so no wonder — but the rest is as aggressively wonderful as ever.)

It’s funny, I’ve come to sort of appreciate the spoiled top notes of vintage perfumes — maybe because it usually means something good is coming?

That’s funny! I have the opposite reaction…I lament what I once remembered my vintage smelling like when it was in pristine condition…especially with citrus notes, like vintage Cristalle.

I’ve got that acetone thang going on in a big bottle of L’Arte di Gucci EdT. Takes about 5 minutes for it to burn off, and then the actual scent comes to the fore – which in itself has quite the nose kick.

My bottle is about that age too. I wear it maybe once a year. And every time I do, I am reminded of what a powerhouse it is! Hard to believe I wore it on a daily basis to work! Ha. It is SO good:)

Instead of one of my honey fragrances, I am wearing D’Orsay Tilleul. But it has beeswax (and I do detect something honey-like in this scent), so there is still a connection.
It’s a sunny fragrance for the Sun Day. :)

and listened to this repeatedly on my almost one hour ride to work this morning.

I know! Isn’ t it great? I have been obsessing over it lately and it brings me back to high school many many years ago …one semester an Indian dance class was required and since the teacher did not take attendance most of the students cut the class except the extreme goody two shoes….so there were three of us, me included…he always played music with a sitar and I just love when that instrument is incorporated into songs now :) That class ended up being one of my favorite……

I wear it to the office, to parties, when I go for a walk on the beach, when I go shopping or have lunch…. And I can wear it almost year round (its a bit too much for me on really hot days, but those days are scarce around here).

5am: 2 sprays of Prada Infusion d’Iris Absolue: one on my neck and one on my chest. 6am: I got in the train in my way to work. It was already very, very crowded. At the following station a very smelly, dirty, sweaty man pushed his way in very hard with two big, black plastic bags with his belongings. He was next to me by the door. People tried to move away from him but there was nowhere to go. I was getting very nauseated and was impatiently waiting for the next stop to change the car. He dared to tell me in a very loud voice and an aggressive attitude: Your perfume “stinks”. You are going to make me and the rest of the people faint. Go take a shower and change your clothes. Be considerate to others”. We all looked perplexed and a woman started arguing with him. By then, the door opened and we all rushed to get out of there. “Good Morning New York”. Good Morning my fellow Nst’ers!

You smell fabulous. Absolue is beautiful.

Perhaps the man was saying what he thought others might say about HIM, so he spoke first to deflect attention from his own situation. I can imagine that he has heard those words directed his way.

I’m so sorry that happened. I was never a thick-skinned commuter so those types of surprise interactions sometimes took me days to get over.

Certain things take me days or even weeks to get over. I am a shy person who usually do not react to any type of aggression, but I feel mortified and hurt about it. In my daily commute I see different people’s reactions and sometimes I would like to be more determined and stronger in mine. He managed to make me upset just for a while. I feel sorry about him, being rejected by everyone everyday. Fortunate, we are for sure!

It got better for sure. I asked some of my co-workers if they could smell any perfume on me. Some say No. Others had to approach very close to me to say they could smell it, but very lightly. Anyway, we laughed, not at the guy, but at the situation itself :)

One of these days I need to try Beige. But today is supposed to get upwards of 80 degrees (unusual for Portland in May), so I’m taking Rappleyea’s advice and wearing vintage Vol de Nuit extrait (which my autocorrect is dying to change to Vol de Suit extract, whatever THAT is) to see how it blooms in the heat. I was also (ahem) enabled by Someone (ahem) to spring for a small bottle of said VdN extrait yesterday, so I will have a big confession for Donatella at the end of the quarter.

And Donatella is thrilled that you honored her birthday with such a great purchase. ;-)

A slightly powdery iris definitely came to the forefront, and something else floral that is hard for me to identify – could be a mix of daffodil and jasmine – and something slightly spicy-sweet that is also hard to identify but reads a little bit like a smidge of vanilla mixed with a slightly bigger smidge of sandalwood, or maybe even leather. Just lovely.

Just popping in for a quick visit. Robin, I’m glad you’re starting to feel better. Lyme is horrible.
I’ve been testing Bracken Woman again this week and I just can’t seem to wrap my head around it. I think I love it until some tiny dissonance in the base notes sets in. I expect I will end up with a bottle when it hits the discounters ;) It just smells like spring fields and crushed citrusy herbs to me and I can’t pin any of the notes down.
I’m enjoying sun-day so far. We’ve had plenty lately along with very dry winds, and today is a bit overcast and still. There is a huge horde (looks like five fledglings and the parents) of recently fledged wrens in my back yard being harried by a very annoyed mockingbird. The poor little wrens are flapping awkwardly around and the cats are going ballistic at the windows. I should be filming this but I’m not.

SOTD: Lalique le Parfum, which is a pretty, honeyed floral.
In honor of Donatella’s bday, I bought the last bottle of Melissa Flagg Hawaiian Botanicals Punani perfume yesterday from Anthrpologie. I’d tried it many times in passing and really liked this creamy, realistic gardenia but figured I’d get it another time, but from the looks of things in the store, they’re paring way down on their fragrance collection and this line isn’t making the cut, it seems, so I had no choice, really ????
Longevity is not great but it was relatively inexpensive so I can just spray away!

I’m wearing JM Nectarine Blossom and Honey.

Continuing the Sniffapalooza report in dribs and drabs-

The Diptyque on Bleeker St. Is beautiful shop that is worth going into just to see the walls. The staff there is amazing. The manager, Christian (?) talked about his own scent memories, and is passionate about fragrance.

Elizabeth and Prince streets are home to many other shops on the Sunday schedule:

Malin and Goetz- body products and candles. They carry the Atelier Bloem fragrance collection, which
in brief testing , were well done. I liked the Iris and William the most.

Le Labo and Atelier are practically next to each other as are Credo beauty and Red Flower. There isn’t anything new at LL and Atelier, but the shops have knowledgeable staff and all the products. Exploration time was limited, ( and thankfully $ spent) but it it’s a good overview for planning a return trip.

When I got the sample last year it was spring, but I also wore it in late summer, in autumn and in winter (Its a bit dense so I dont felt like trying it when it is really hot outside)…and now my sample is almost gone. I think I can still get one wear out of it, maybe I’ll save it for friday.

…conclusion: I did not find it hard to associate this scent with at least 3 seasons.
The narcissus is a reminder of spring, but the hay/tobacco/honey make it also suitable for colder months imo.

I’m wearing Farmacia SS. Annunziata Vaniglia from a decant. It’s a luscious vanilla and comfortable, but not much more, no apparent development. I don’t get any lemon or floral, just a bit of the amber. More recently my go-to scent has been Histoire de Parfums 1873 (Colette). I can’t get enough of its tangerine-citrus juiciness.

When you say “original one” do you mean Quand Vient L’Ete? That was the LE that preceded Voile. But I agree, this one works just fine in Spring and Fall as well.

No, I got confused. I was talking about Terracotta Le Parfume, which is very summery. I just sprayed on some Quand Vient L’Ete and the carnation takes the lead. The drydown is very nice, vanilla and caramel.

How different is the Voile from the (whatever the pillar version is)? I have a decant of the original and it is a bit overwhelming for me, though I like it conceptually.

I’ve not smelled the newer version they came out with (Terracotta Le Parfum). This is definitely not overwhelming – very sheer and summery, a hint of carnation, a light vanilla/tonka bean drydown. In either ad copy or a review, I remember reading about J. P. Guerlain wanting the smell of the sun on terracotta tiles. There’s a bit of that if you look for it.

Perfume Shrine compared them – evidently there were three different versions.
        http://perfumeshrine.blogspot.com/2014/04/guerlain-terracotta-le-parfum-fragrance.html

Monsieur Guerlain describes Voile and gives the history of the scent:
        http://www.monsieurguerlain.com/2015/09/voile-dete.html

I’ve got the 1999 version in the round bottle.

That’s so nice. I do love D600, have a partial bottle of it.

And for tomorrow look out for my new Carner review.
hint* hint* the novelty also features iris.

Le Sillage Blanc by Dusita today. Quite enjoying it. I can’t bring myself to wear any honey perfumes as it’s been rather warm here in SOCAL and I haven’t been in the mood.

My favorite is her gardenia: Melodie de L’amour. I think it is absolutely stunning. BUT I also love Oudh Infini. Which. I imagine is a love it or hate it thing. It’s about as funky and sweet of an oud as I’ve ever smelled. (Similar in funk with maybe Frederic Malle The Night. ) I just tried the other new EDP La Douceur de Siam which I also think is nice.

Racking my brains for the list of samples with honey notes that I possess… Might have to go to Fragrantica to see if that will help. (Might also bail on the challenge, depending on whether I’m visiting Mom on Friday. If that’s the day they move her to the rehab center, it might not be a great day to go. Hovering makes Dad anxious.)

Eau Premiere again today, for Mom.

I don’t know if you have any of these but I find these all have strong honey notes off the top of my head: Back to Black by Kilian, Essences Insensees Mimosa Diptyque, Absolue pour le Soir MFK, Honey Oud Floris, Miel de Bois Serge Lutens, Nahema and Rose Barbare Guerlain.

Mals, I’m a bit conflicted about Chergui, too. I like the dry down, but there is a charred note, or something, at first, that I’m not wild about. You’re not alone!

It’s the drydown I don’t like. It smells like (oh gosh, I’m going to get myself in trouble here) old people’s houses.

I dunno, maybe it was just my grandmother’s friends, something they did or didn’t do? The houses always smelled the same, under varying topnotes of powdered Sanka or lemon furniture polish or toothpaste: mildew, damp stone, powder and very slight decay.

It’s finally — and suddenly — hot enough for Eau de Magnolia, so that’s what I’m wearing. I love that this fragrance captures magnolia’s weird texture — creamy and sort of astringent at the same time.

    Hi All! Happy Wednesday!

    1) Thank the Lord, we will have sunshine and 80+ degree weather today! We are due some heat and some sun!

    2) Yesterday, worker came and fixed the majority of damage from the winter storms- carpet pad replaced and anti-microbial applied, ceiling patched and fixed, some electrical finetuning and I even had cleaners come in to do the carpets and floors. I also purchased painting supplies, and got more painting samples. This weekend, I will be doing window treatment shopping! #moneymoneymoney

    3) In the mail. I got my Prada Infusion miniature dabber set! They are so cute and darling! Based on the recommendation from lucasai, I am wearing L’infusions d’ Oeillet. This is simply lovely- you have the lovely spicy carnation-amber scent- but with a fresh lightness. If you like spicy scents BUT want lightness, this is one to try. If I can I would like to get a full bottle of this.

I am in 1932 EDT today…Mals wore it yesterday which reminded me I hadn’t worn it in a while.

I haven’t sniffed the EDP of this one b/c the EDT is so good. Looking on Fragrantica it doesn’t look good… :(

“Tested both new EdP 2016 & earlier EdT purchased in 2013. I much prefer the earlier EdT which has no grapefruit/pear note. The EdT shows more orris root/jasmine with sheer incense notes. As noted, they really seem like two different fragrances.”

My theme for this week isn’t honey it appears but complaints about Chanel’s EDPs. ;)

You smell lovely! I received a decant of the EDT in a swap (thanks, Elizabeth!!), so I was recently looking at the notes and reviews for the EDP on Fragrantica too, and it damn near made me weep. I hate pear. And the EDT is just so beautiful, I don’t understand why Chanel would fiddle with it like that. Go add fruit to something else, for Pete’s sake, and keep it out of the flowers and aldehydes! …So that’s me complaining about the EDPs, too, then.????

It’s cool and rainy and I’m in the sample of maharanil that I turned into body oil. There’s probably some honey in the mix, but the oil application quiets this lavender mix a bit. I quit the old job (the night job that was my “day” job?) And the transition is a little bumpy, but exciting. Less time to check things here, but I’m sure that’ll settle soon.

Most days are Sun Day here in sunny San Diego, though May and June tend to actually be pretty cloudy, as you know – May Gary and June Gloom! It is a lovely sunny day today. Just put on some L’Occitance Honey & Lemon. Not terribly honeyish and just a little lemon – I mostly get a light patchouli.

Well, relief is the emotion of my day…blood pressure for the puppygirl is down in the normal range after a week of bumping up her new med. It’s on the high side of normal, but we’ll take it. I don’t wanna gush, but we have the greatest dog ever, and the greatest vet ever!!

Okay, on the perfume side of things…I’m in a tiny bit of AA Calling All Angels and some bigger spritzes of Elie Saab Le Parfum Eau de Parfum Intense, both from samples. Whew, what a name! Both have some honey in them, although the honey note is much more noticeable in the ES.

They sit alongside each other very well – they have several common notes, but completely different styles. I didn’t intend to do a compare, but it’s been fun to see how they develop!

I hope everyone is having a lovely day. :)

I am a bundle of nerves today. We’re taking the kids tomorrow on their first plane trip and first time in NYC. Throw in 2 nights worth of very expensive Broadway show tickets and a cold, rainy forecast plus trying to wrap things up at work… you get the picture.

You know it’s turning to winter when you hear the first mouse of the year scuttling about in the ceiling.
So, went to the shops yesterday to find a honey perfume and was helpfully directed towards ( drum roll ) Honey. It’s not. But never mind.
Recently i have started thinking of my perfumes as either milky/ cloudy or clear…as in the juice ( even though they are all clear in reality). So, JM cardamon and mimosa is ‘milky’ whereas Monsieur Li is clear. Dame New Musk= milky. Cristalle= clear. Etc.. etc. sandalwoods are milky, cedars are clear.
I have also been spending a lot of time arguing with Chandler Burr during my morning walks.
    Otherwise life is good!

Ha! I’m with you. What does Chandler Burr have to say on the matter. (And if you’re referring to MJ Honey, I agree. Dot smells honey-ish to me, though. Or honeysuckle-ish? Can’t remember…)

My argument with Chandler Burr is not related to Honey, just re. listing perfume notes. I watched a movie the other day (The Empire of Scents) that had him in it.

Good morning, all, on a cold, wet Thursday. I have the dentist to see today, nothing sinister, just a scale and clean, but ack! the smells. And the sounds. So, here’s some perfumista logic for you, or perhaps you’ll decide it’s just me up to my usual tricks, but it goes like this: my dentist is just around the corner from World. At World, there is Frapin. On the Frapin shelf, there is 1692. This appointment was re-scheduled from March to May, my birthday month. Can you see how it’s A Meant Thing for me to step around the corner to World and buy this boozy beauty?

Truth to tell, I don’t really know why I suddenly, out of the blue, decided I need a bottle of 1692. Yes, the weather has turned, and yes, I feel like wearing big, warm spicy scents, but I have several Then too, I lay awake last night waiting for Dakkie to start roaring, and he didn’t, but I didn’t sleep anyway. At some point, I idly read Kevin’s review of 1692, and there, just like that, a little lemming was born. Awww. So, no SOTD thus far, but very soon, I will prance off in to work in a waft of spiced rum and brandy.

Be well, fragrant people of the world. What a service we perform!

You deserve that bottle for several reasons:
      1. World class, Olympic gold medal reasoning
      2. It’s your birthday month
      3. It’s meant to be
      4. It’s Kevin’s fault
      5. You suffered through a dentist appointment
      6. It’s a beautiful scent

      Enjoy! You will smell great!
      And happy birthday!

Thank you! B-day is still some time away, and the credit card has hiccups at the thought that this reasoning will persist unti it arrives. There’s still La Pausa, not to even think of all my little splurges in the States. But then again, why not? It’s there, and so am I, and there might be a war (heaven forfend!) and then there won’t be any more perfumes for a long time….

There could be a volcanic eruption in Auckland that disrupts perfume buying – and the heat of the molten lava will bring out the best in 1692 . Also, we should support the small, local retailers. Also, it’s a good perfume and you can test Amouage Lilac while you are there. Also, Thursday is Potential Brand New Best Beloved Perfume Day. Also, if you go to World you will have the fun of hearing the word ‘fabulous’ or ‘gorgeous’ repeated.

In fact, 5 times in two sentences (I counted), together with some highly dubious story about the origins of a perfume that was quite nice. BUT (and this is just pure badness on their part) they’re not carrying 1692 any more. Huh! I sprayed a little 1270, but it’s not as deep or as powerful. Not a lemming, in fact. Well, there’s still La Pausa…

          • Kanuka says:
            4 May 2017 at 12:28 am

That’s very tedious…especially when you’re primed for buying 1692. I’ve been wearing 1970 which isn’t really boozy and Immortal Beloved ( which has a nice rum note). Both are warm and rich but not 1692.

This morning I spied my long-mislaid tiny bottle of philosophy Fresh Cream smugly lounging on its side in the spot where a dozen or so samples usually lie in a jumble. To make sure I wasn’t hallucinating, I snatched up the bottle and sprayed. Thus, my SOTD.

Now I’m wondering if the perfume imps ran off with the bottle months ago and then tossed it back last night after they had tired of it…

It is 87F in the shade here… a decidedly damp cashier at the supermarket grumbled that “we skipped spring.” My son’s friend caught a ride home with me today–while fastening his seat belt he cheerfully explained, “I guess we won’t have a spring!” And when I got home, a phone message from a friend included her despairing complaint, “Where did spring go?” The cats? I think their meows roughly translate as “Ow oh ow oh ow it is HOT!”

Robin, I hope you are feeling MUCH better!

    SOTD= MCG Sideris

Beeswax and I don’t care that it is not Honey…I am still on theme! Incense, beeswax, something that is almost iris-like but is not iris (I bet it’s the “mountain tea”).

I have seen the worst in human nature in a work setting and it all boils down to selfishness; sad to say, 3 in 3 days. A very senior manager who likes to make waves, lies and bully people into acceding to her wants. A colleague who was magically able to get medical documentation to get a preferred seat in a new workplace. A colleague who wants others to go through what she went through a month ago (nothing bad, just an inconvenience) even though we already solved the issue that caused the inconvenience.

Regarding the first one, I was not the target but have no outlet as there is no way to prove bad behavior. Regarding the second, it is akin to an able-bodied person getting a handicapped tag from an unscrupulous doctor and I cannot question it due to HIPAA. Regarding the third, I pretty much dictated that there will be no variation to how I will handle it regardless of her whining. All three appear to have all the fine trappings in life and their sense of entitlement is sickening.

Off my soap box. Now does this somewhat explain why I constantly engage in retail therapy: at Sniffa and today (FB of Prada Infusion d’Mimosa, Iris 39 Shower Gel, Jo Malone Geranium and Walnut Hand Cream and a $10 Estee Lauder pencil sharpener (ha! now all I need are the scented pencils and erasers – I blame Robin for posting the Daily Lemmings)?
