Tuesday scent of the day 5/2

Posted by Robin on 2 May 2017 250 Comments

CB2 Lizzie teapot

Happy Tuesday, and a very happy birthday to Donatella Versace! (And pretty sure that means you can buy that bottle of perfume today.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm testing the waters (I'm taking antibiotics and I'm still a little queasy in the mornings after my first dose) with a little dab of Thierry Mugler Cologne. Tea at the moment is my morning standby, Upton Irish Breakfast.

Reminder: on 5/5 we're doing May-bee Baby Friday... wear a honey fragrance or one that contains a honey note. Suggested by happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Lizzy teapot ("reigns supreme. We couldn't resist a loving nod to the Queen herself. (Lizzy, AKA Queen Elizabeth.) More cool than prim and proper, Victorian-style teapot pours modern in a chic coat of purple silicone over porcelain. Sculptural shape and touchy-feely texture are sure to be the talk of the table.") in Royal Purple is marked down to $12.99 at CB2.

    Hang in there Robin!

I decided to wear the last of my sample of Rubj before it dried up completely. it’s quite something for a Tuesday at 7 am.

Oh, I am, thanks! And yes — Rubj is maybe not a 7 am fragrance — but enjoy the ride.

I didn’t get to post yesterday. I was so busy that I didn’t have time to find and inbox my Diorissimo so I had to grab my Coty Muguet des Bois and spray it as I was walking out the door. I was so happy to participate though. I feel like spring is officially here when I have an excuse to break out the LOTV. Today I’m going to find that Diorissimo.

Lizzie. I dare anyone fortunate enough to meet the queen to call her that. Please tell me how it goes over. :)

Seriously doubt that anybody over at whatever department at CB2 that assigns names to products has ever met Queen Elizabeth ;-)

I think it’s the same as when some perfume lovers call Serge Lutens “Uncle Serge”. :D A “loving nod” indeed. ;)

I’ve finished my sample of West Third Brand Tobacco 1812. It seems to be made along the lines of Tobacco Vanille/Tabac Rouge, but it’s much lighter, more watery. Feels right today, because I wanted something light but still with honey in it.

I’ve gotten through most of my backlog of untried samples — the ones I was genuinely interested in, though I admit I still have some manufacturer samples from Sephora rolling around — and am moving onto phase two of Sample Slam 17, re-trying and using up samples I liked.

Beginning in a burst of glory by finishing off a sample of Parfums Delrae Wit. It’s such a beauty! I don’t think I’m going to snap up a decant — I have more elegant florals than I can wear already — but if I could find a good deal on a bottle or they made some kind of minis, I’d probably buy it in a minute.

Wit is gorgeous. That reminds me to get out the remaining 1.5ml in my decant and wear that sucker.

I have a question: I’m thinking of buying Annick Goutal Songes. If you have tried both, would you recommend the EDT or the EDP? Today I am wearing Saffron Troublant (sp?). It seems right on this morning when the weather feels more like October.

I’ve only tried the EDT a few times, and it’s very lovely. The EDP is more rounded, and slightly heavier on the vanilla. I tend to prefer the Goutals in EDP, especially the richer feminines.

My vote is for the EDP! I just sprung for a bottle recently in fact. It depends a bit if you’re in it for the bright florals (EDT) or the wood and vanilla (EDP), though personally I only really notice the difference if I wear them side-by-side… in regular wear, the EDP just feels MORE. Also I notice The Perfumed Court has samples of both concentrations. :)

They are both lovely, but I prefer the EDT, since is brighter and sunnier.

Thanks everyone for your input. I’m still confused, but may just go ahead with the EDT since it is less than half the pice of the EDP.

I’d try both before buying. I had a sample of another Goutal EDT, wanted a bottle, found a good deal on the EDP, and bought it. I wish I’d bought the EDT as it smells quite different.

Sometimes mint tea works for me, when my stomach isn’t quite what it should be. Mugler Cologne is great, I was rearranging some stuff in my closet the other day and came across my bottle. One of my earlier purchases.

Sotd is quite a different thing altogether, although still not a big scent. Wearing Chant d’Arômes, and enjoying it a lot.

on the tops of my feet and the part of my neck that was not hacked up yesterday at the dermatologist I am wearing Saffron Troublant (this is day no 4…..why am I so addicted to this one?) and sprayed up and down both of my arms is Suede et Safran….I am a 93lb spice bomb for sure! I am surprised no one has said anything to me yet at work-LOL!

Robin, hang in there! Hope the nausea subsides real soon !

Sorry to hear about the hacking – you must smell incredible. I love Saffron Troublant on other people (sadly, it’s too sweet on my skin) and have been wanting to sniff Suede et Safran for a while.

I have been having things lopped off for the past 20 years…unfortunately…so it is standard procedure now every time I go to the dermatologist.

The odd thing about Saffron Troublant is my nose smells heavy cumin at the onset (even though it is not listed as a note on fragrantica) and cumin and I are usually not friends….and yet, I cannot help sniffing my arm constantly when I wear this one…and the drydown is gorgeous…rose and vanilla to my nose.

Suede et Safran is still going strong as I really over applied (I finished the sample)..it is very dry and powdery to my nose…this is my non professional impression :)….I haven’t had the opportunity to research the notes yet….hopefully you will get to try it soon :)

    SotD = Fou d’Absinthe by L’Artisan Parfumer

This perfume has a fresh and a warm side.
The opening is somewhat green aromatic, but after a short period the woody and warm spicy notes develop and make it a very cosy scent. Love it!

I cant recall a mention of it in the comments here, but i just discovered your review (2006, more than 10 years ago…),
        Spot on description!
Though on my skin the spices seem somewhat more prominent.

Btw totally forgot we were doing honey. So now for something completely different:

        Poison, Esprit de parfum.

        The honey note is prominent.
And I also like this formulation a lot, I think its my favourite Poison.
Its so smooth and less ‘in your face’ than other versions.
This is one of the few ‘big perfumes’ that fits me / does not make me feel ridiculously overdressed. ;)

I’ve been on a holiday in Senegal (great) and down with a stomach bug (less fantastic). I’m also going through one of those phases where I’m less excited about perfume – I almost didn’t wear anything in Senegal, with the exception of JM Mimosa & Cardamom and TF Soleil Blanc body oil.

What have you enjoyed wearing lately? Anything I should definitely try? I’m in the good old Rue Cambon today, because of important meetings.

And Robin, if you’re reading this – I hope you’re doing well. I went through the treatment of Lyme disease years ago and it’s no fun. I had Lyme arthritis and my knees seemed to me as large as footballs. Fortunately, they did go back to normal after a while:)

Hi Annikky, just popping in to say hi to you and all NST’ers, special message to Robin’s immune system: kick the bugger out!

I am going through a similar phase, mostly because too busy. Last purchase were the last mls of Temps d’une Fete available and I love it and wear it often. Today I am wearing Mona di Orio’s Ambre, it is a lovely amber for a too cold spring (Olfactoria described it as a purring cat rather than a screaming tiger). Best wishes to everyone!

Thank you! It’s good to “see” you. I hope the busy phase will pass at some point. I’ll also be more and more busy up until end December (with a possible breather in August). But I knew this when I took the job and it’s going to be exciting.

Yep, I’m going through a similar phase. I’m just not so enthusiastic about perfume lately. I still love it, of course, but I am not putting much thought into it. I just grab a no-brainer and get on with life. The upside is that I don’t feel compelled to buy MORE perfume – which of course I don’t need anyway. In any case, I’m sure this phase will eventually pass.

I am wearing my beloved Chanel 28 La Pausa EdT. I had like 20 sprays early in the morning and it is still hanging very, very, softly on my clothes. Are there any perfumes close enough to 28 EdT with that powdery, woody, soft iris?

    • nozknoz says:

I wish there were! Bear astutely observed once that 28 is really a vetiver perfume with iris. I love both vetiver and iris, so I find that a dynamite combination.

Angela loves DelRae Mythique for iris, but I can’t smell it very well so I’m not sure how similar it is. Chanel No. 18 has the same iris, but to my nose it’s even softer than 28. You could also try Chanel Cuir Russie for a leather iris. Ann Gerard Cuir de Nacre is a less natural leather iris. It is also a soft scent, though.

Have you tried Carner Barcelona D600? To me the name sounds like a car track, but a generous NSTer sent me a sample and it is lovely. From the notes you might suspect it is spicy, but I would say it is an elegant, powdery, wood and iris scent.

Imho, few (maybe none?) lines do iris the way Chanel does. From La Pausa to 31 RC, 19 Poudre, 1932 and even the Misia EDT drydown has that haunting iris.

I do love Infusion d’ Iris Absolue too.

SOTD is Chanel 19 EDP. We’re gearing up for some rather ridiculous weather here in the next couple of days — 90% humidity, temperatures in the 80s, and thunderstorms. Hey, Mother Nature, are you practicing for Chicago in August or something?? Lay off!

Yes, Oregon. That’s why the predicted weather is so weird – it’s supposed to be chilly and rainy until July! That’s our little joke – in June we have Rose Festival, with carnival rides and food tents down on the waterfront, and a bunch of Navy ships dock along the river, and there are a couple of parades, and it usually rains for the whole week. Maybe it won’t this year. :)

Tried out the 3 Olivine Atelier samples I ordered last night:
She Belongs There edp: a nice greenish, non-indolic jasmine. Very bright and summery and reminds me if the Voluspa Jasmine and Amaranth. Nice and I’ll probably use it, but it didn’t rock my jasmine world.

Gigi oil: I had a hard time getting a sense of its character, but I found it to be a pleasant fruity floral. Maybe a tad too fruity (pear) for me. Will retry.

Full Regalia edp (SOTD): a musky vanilla+jasmine. Reminds me of parts of both TBS White Musk and MH L’Air d’Rien. Pleasant, soft, kind of snuggly.

Yeah, it could use a splash of mothballs. It’s pretty, though. I like the name(s) too. Full Regalia is named after her grandfather’s racehorse and she has a sweet story about it.

Honey is one category that I don’t have much of. I have one of the MAC honey scents from several years ago, and I think of La Via del Profumo as having a wonderful honey-beeswax note.

BTW, I’ve mentioned before having the opportunity to smell individual Chanel ingredients at Saks Fifth Avenue in Chevy Chase, MD, thanks to Wendysue and Chanel rep Akil. The beeswax essence did not smell at all like what I expected, although I did recognize it as a note I’ve smelled in perfumes. That is, it did not smell like beeswax candles or honey to me.

A day late — cause that’s how I seem to roll these days — in AG Le Muguet. This one’s so soft I think you could splash it on from a bucket and no one would notice… I cut and brought in some bearded irises last night to enjoy before the rain spoiled them; they have a very light, delicate scent sort of similar to this AG.

I have another question, have any of you purchased perfume on the Notino site? That’s where I have purchased the few SHL fragrances I bought, but I’m wonder if it’s legit. I googled it and have there were pros and cons but more pros than cons.

Busy weekend for me ended in the ER. I managed to smash an antique crystal shot glass into the crook between my thumb and index finger (carrying it, I hit my hand on our sideboard) and had to have the glass removed and get stitched up. It hurts, and I feel extremely stupid about the whole thing. AND I really liked that glass…

Having had no plans to visit the ER that evening, I was doused in Knowing, and had some Stash oil in my hair. The nurse was complimentary… but I am sure I was wearing well above the perfume decibel level for hospitals.

This morning I am in the fresh and elegant Osmanthe Yunnan–which I love for the New York minute it lasts.

Dinner plans on Sunday were scuttled, but the Sat feast worked out terrifically. It was warm enough to eat out on the deck under our oak trees canopy, and was all in all a lovely evening.

As for the pre-dinner aperitif, I wound up tweaking the Cheeky Negroni recipe. Here’s the final–was for 6 adults:

1 cup gin (I used Tanqueray)
        1 cup Lillet (white!)
        1 cup Aperol ( ;-) )
Strips of blood orange peel from two oranges
        juice of two blood oranges
A very large handful of fresh, aromatic mint leaves, crushed

Mixed this together and poured it over ice for individual servings.

        The color was crazy.

Actually, before the mint and blood oranges, the color was a dead ringer for Scotland’s Irn Bru!

Doing ‘proper honey from now to Friday after a beeswax cheat yesterday. SOTD is Phaedon “Tabac Rouge”.

Notes are ginger, cinnamon, honey, musk, powdery notes and benzoin. I love the honeyed tobacco scent. Longevity is so-so. It seems like I tried this one before, so I must look up my previous reaction! :^)

So I tried this in January and noted it was too fleeting. I guess it does a bit better in warmer weather. :^)

This afternoon I dropped into SAC Perfumes in Malaga, a must-visit if you’re in town. And now I am an honorary member of the reeking havoc brigade.

LH: Parfums de Marly “Byerley” and Robert Piguet “Fracas”
RH: “Black I” and Robert Piguet “Bandit”.
Except – I might have got Facas and Bandit mixed up. One of them is sharp and green, the other warmer and sweeter. Which is which?

Hmm. I can see how one might find both sharp and green. Bandit should be powdery and leathery while Fracas is a white floral, but has some sharp edges. If I had to guess, sharp & green is Bandit; warmer and sweeter is Fracas? I’d never describe Fracas as warm and sweet, but next to other scents it might seem that way.

I have Bandit EDP in my desk drawer for green hue week (in two weeks)….this smells green to me….Fracas, from what I remember, was all about a creamy tuberose on my skin…sweet and creamy…

        • Jiji says:
          2 May 2017 at 4:15 pm

I tried Bandit a few days ago.

And yes to my nose it starts out green and sharp. A bit too sharp maybe. I did not love it instantly.

I went on with my day, running errands, and kinda forgot about it. But after 2 to 3 hours I suddenly noticed something smelling good. And then I realised it was Bandit.
After the sharpness wears off I actually like it a lot. Smooth, leathery, musky (not cleam but a bit dirty), vegetal. And now I wonder what the vintage smells like…

Yes, it’s a very happy scent. I didn’t really like the original. It didn’t really fit me, and I guess I also expected something completely different from Miu Miu, something sweet and whimsical. I must sample it again and try to see/smell it from. different angle.

Has anyone smelled Jacomo for Her? I saw it on a list of musk perfumes, I like several other Jacomo fragrances (but not all), and discounters are practically paying you to take it off their hands, so I am curious.

I’d never heard of that one, but then the only Jacomo I’ve really smelled much is Silences. I looked it up and found its Fragrantica and Basenotes pages and this review: http://www.mimifroufrou.com/scentedsalamander/2007/06/salammbo_no_sorry_jacomo_for_h.html, and I dunno.. I think I’d take a chance on it, if it’s a good enough deal, but your mileage may vary, obviously.

After reading that Scented Salamander review, now I’m tempted to check it out.

It can be had for around $20, sweetgrass!

Of course, my main concern with reviews from ten years ago would be the possibility of an unfortunate reformulation in the years since.

To preface: the molecules 1 and 2 didn’t hit any pleasure centers for me. But the escentrics? Yowza!!

I like #2 far more than #1. I bought it at Barneys Scottsdale, where the wonderful saleswoman picked it out after I told her my favorite drink was a gin and tonic. She spritzed, my soul sang, and I bought the biggest bottle. The opening of #2 lasts about 2 hours on my skin. The entire perfume lasts 8-10 hours for me. The quiet purr of the base notes is just lovely.

However, my husband thinks that escentric #1 is the bee’s knees, and cannot understand why I didn’t buy it. If you like elder flowers and gin, try #2.

I am sampling Messe de Minuit today. I can’t believe I’ve never smelled it before, but somehow I overlooked it when I was doing incense. I might need more. Also, I have had an awful headache yesterday and today that I think signals the need for new reading glasses. I never get headaches and this one seems worse after I’ve been reading.

I finally did it and used up the very last of my precious decant of Chanel Sycomore EDT (the original Exclusif one). It is just so perfectly gorgeous! Truly the only bottle that I don’t have that I wish I did, even though I have it’s twin in Encre Noir. Why Chanel? Why? I know why, but shame on you for messing with perfection in trying to “fix” the Exclusif line. Boo.

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why Chanel doesn’t sell the exclusifs in both edt and edp. That’s what they do with all of their other pillars! It gives me hope that maybe the grand plan is to bring back the edts someday and sell them side-by-side with the edps. And hopefully sooner than later.

31 RC was almost not recognizable to me. La Pausa also smelled very different. I believe people have liked CdR in the EDP.

The thing w/ the conversion to me anyways is, the EDTs were beautiful. Some people had sillage and longevity issues w/ the EDTs but I personally found decent longevity and sprayed more for the lower sillage ones. The EDPs are in many ways new compositions…not just attempts to address sillage or longevity and there’s the rub. Changing things that weren’t broken.

You can also pour through this old 9 page Basenotes thread in your spare time. ;) I love comparisons and discussions but realize everyone else may not be as enthused…many different posters pick apart differences between the EDTs and EDPs.

My hubby got back last night from a trip to York PA, so we’re going to lunch soon to celebrate his return.

I’m in AA Ray of Light and Unter de Linden, both from samples from a generous NSTer. :)

Ray of Light is a nice, refined citrus – crisp, but with a heavier vetiver base. Unter de Linden is a citrusy floral on me. Honey is a note in this one, but I can’t detect it. Both work well together, and are quite nice for the hot weather.

    I hope y’all have a lovely Tuesday!

One of the nicest honey scents I have tried for a long time is a cheap body wash and lotion by a organic German brand called Lavera. It’s almond milk and organic honey and is almost like a milky, sweet clover honey tea. It’s quite simialr to the old L’Occitane honey splash/cologne that came in a pretty box about ten years ago…and discontinued.

I’m wearing Le Parfum de Jeanne. This is a gem of a perfume in my opinion. It opens with a brisk lemon/ mandarin that quickly turns spicy at which point jasmine enters. At first the jasmine is floral and heavy but then it gets quite fecal at which point coumarin and vanilla ramp up the base. My husband described it as a meaty floral…so don’t know where that fits on the perfume wheel. It is a Ys-Uzac. Perfume. Vincent Micotti also sent me a bottle of distilled courmarin to smell….and it is very much like almond icing, or marzipan. I had sent him a bunch of karetu grass and a book on Maori plant use…as somehow we got corresponding about plants and perfumes. The coumarin is almost identical to the grass, though the grass also has a hay note. Interesting stuff!

Kanuka, I’ve really enjoyed reading about your explorations and listening to the interview you did which you provided the link for here a short while back. Reading your post today, I was just inspired to look for my coumarin and then got sidetracked by my Indian attars from White Lotus Aromatics which is a wonderful company here in the states. Their blog is utterly lovely, and I think you might enjoy reading it as an affinity for place and where we reside and what resides in us as a result is evident in what they write.

It is so cool that you have connected with Vincent Micotti AND gotten to smell coumarin, Kanuka! There is something very special about artists (I’m including both musicians and writers in this) who love scent.

Of course I rushed to check, but Le Parfum de Jeanne isn’t on the Ys Uzac website. I think maybe it was only sold in Switzerland, as it was a special project.
      https://www.fragrantica.com/news/YS-UZAC-Le-Parfum-de-Jeanne-6254.html

There is something very genuine about Ys Uzac. I’m glad you reminded me of it, as I love to wear Pohadka in the cool, green part of spring, even though they see it as an autumn scent.

I’ve been really lucky to have entered into a correspondence with him. The more I learn the less I know…and all that. Interesting about the Jeanne. It is sunnier than Pohadka, more like Lale and Jasmine. I also like Metaboles (tomato leaf) and Immortal Beloved (a bit boozy).

It is perfect today as it js not scorching hot nor humid. I should have worn it more often when it was cooler. Anyway, this is probably my favorite of the Serge Lutens export line.
