Thursday scent of the day 4/27

Posted by Robin on 27 April 2017 207 Comments

Happy Almost-Friday! (And apologies for being so late, I am not feeling well and so I slept in this morning, much longer than I thought I would.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando at the moment (see note above).

Reminder: on 4/28, will it be Gucci or Givenchy? Pick one and make your case, or wear one of each.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is from the Gucci Garden capsule collection, 2016.

Pretty sure I have Lyme, most unfortunately, and probably one of the zillion possible co-infections since I’m having some symptoms that match Lyme and some that don’t. Was feeling “off” for a couple of days, progressed to “bad” yesterday, found the deer tick on my neck last night. Not well pleased, although actually it’s amazing that I’ve lived in SE PA for 20 years now and haven’t had Lyme already. My husband has had it twice.

Your day sounds lovely, have a great time!

Yikes! My oldest got a tick bite last summer (N Wisconsin) and was treated prophylactically with antibiotics. He had a welt the size of a large grapefruit on the back of his leg.
        Lymes scares me. Take care!!

Hope you feel better soon, Robin! I got a tick bite last summer but was thankfully already on the appropriate antibiotic for a different infection, and my subsequent ELISA was negative.

Today, I am wearing Sylvaine Delacourte Dovana from her Musk series. I may have also ordered travel sprays of this and Florentina and received a travel spray of Smeraldo as a GWP.

This whole collection sits well on my skin – nice musk + flowers. Perfect for all day meeting days.
Last night’s music festival went till 11 pm, so lots of coffee today.

They are really nice on me, although the Helicriss is my least favourite. I would not invest in a 100 ml bottle, but 15 ml for 23 pounds + free shipping + a 3rd spray free was just too good of a deal to pass up.

Started the day with Leau Chic which disappeared in one hour then applied Hiris.
Just got off the bus and asked a women what perfume she was wearing, it smelled so nice and simple. She answered Victoria Secret but I have no idea which one as I didn’t have time to ask the name!

I bought a sample set from Olympic Orchids and found Seattle Chocolate and Blackbird to be tolerable but I also bought Gujarat, since that is the name of the province of India where my son-in-law’s parents were born. In my opinion, that was the worst scent I have ever smelled in my life so I scrubbed and scrubbed and threw it in the garbage. Now I am wearing Organza Indecence and feeling much happier.

Oh, no! I’ve smelled CA Chocolate and Blackbird. Blackbird has the strongest, most pungent pine note I’ve ever smelled. I have a tiny sample vial wrapped in plastic in a drawer with some other perfumes, and every time I open the drawer I get a massive whiff of pine.

Richmond Ferry is also quite pine-y, but not quite as strong as Blackbird. I don’t really like it either, but I can understand why others might.

I found Gujarat very evocative but also nauseating and unwearable. It really did conjure up an overcrowded, sweaty bus ride, diesel fumes and all, and a spice market on a very hot day somewhere in India (never been).

Blackbird has a note in it that does not play well on my skin. It is the berry part. I love Gujarat and bought a bottle and wear it on really hot and humid days. I find it very dry and savory. There is nothing sweet about it. I layer it with jasmine or coconut lotion.

Hi Jada! Congrats on your purchase and I know you’ll have a lot of fun with it. Enfleurage in NYC has some excellent blends if you would like to try those first, or just read their ingredients and purchase the separate oils yourself. Eden Botanicals is a great resource for high-quality oils. If you’d like to research the different attributes of the various oils, Eden Botanicals’ site will refer you to further reading material available for each oil and you can read up online or buy a couple of books.

I have a oil diffuser, mine is sort of “old fashioned” I pour the oil the ceramic elephant and light a candle. My favorite is eucalyptus for when everyone in the house has a stuffy nose.

I love eucalyptus too! I have a few that I’ve used topically in the past with carrier oils, but have never diffused before. Good stuff!! :)

I did a “Calming Blend” last night for the first try, and 2 kids didn’t like it. (I think I added too many drops.) But my middle kid LOVED it and wants her own diffuser in her room! :)

I almost always fill the diffuser, pour in a capful of either rosewater or orange-flower water (you can buy them at Walmart and they’re like $3 a bottle), and then add a couple of drops of whatever essential oil I feel like: grapefruit, orange, lime, Atlas cedar, or lavender. It makes a nice clean scent without being overpowering.

When I lived in Indiana I would find rosewater in the small-ish “international” aisle of wal-mart. Amazon also has good prices if you can’t find it locally!

Another stormy day here. I have nothing planned except coloring my hair and watching Baseball (hopefully it doesn’t get rained out) decided to test my sample of TF Sole di Positano. So far I really like it. It’s a very bright, easy going, summer scent. It reminds me of something way less expensive though, but I can’t place it. Robin, I really hope you recover quickly.

Picked through the sample stash this morning looking for Gucci or Givenchy and came out with Gucci Flora Gorgeous Gardenia. Yup, it is perfume. Not much more to say about it than that.

I dont have orange clothing, but this orange blossom scent fits the festive mood as well.
This is also a beautiful scent by the way. Love it.

      Hi Jiji.

So. I did a little research on your Aperol (okay, I asked my husband if he’d heard of it :-) ! He hadn’t.) It is owned by the Campari company and shares a lot of same flavors–but is reportedly sweeter and has a lot less alcohol (but as an aside–wonders never cease–Wikipedia tells me that Campari’s alcohol varies from country to country depending on regulations from 20% to 28%!) My little cocktail bible doesn’t mention it at all, but does list several Campari cocktails. I thought perhaps it might be more widely known in Europe, but local BevMos (HUGE chain of liquor stores here) sells it. The upshot is that I want to try it–and am currently havering between something called a Cheeky Negroni and something called Rosemary, Baby! (the exclamation point is in the name) for our dinner party on Sat.

Thanks so much for this little exploratory tangent!! Whatever I drink on Sat I’m toasting you!

Thats so lovely to hear, Oakland Fresca! :)

Matter of fact. I just had an Aperol Spritz (its Aperol with Prosecco) at a friends party.
It is orange, so it fits the national dress code today haha, and it actually tastes pretty good!
Its less bitter than Campari, but also not jaw aching sweet.

        Enjoy your dinner party tomorrow!

Gosh, I can’t afford it at all, but I love what Gucci has been putting out with its new director. Great picture choice!

SOTD V&R Magic – Lavender Illusion. It starts as a sweet candied lemon-current-lavender then slowly turns into dry smoky lavender. I am weirded out by the wide sweet-dry gap in this one. I would buy a cheapo shower gel that resembles the opening notes :D

Sending healing thoughts and wishes for comfort to our Fearless NST Leader Robin today.

sotd = Vanille Galante because it’s cool and cloudy this morning, and I would like to bake cookies. But I’m not going down that road. Last thing I need today is a sugar hangover.

I’m loving the fashion-y photos at the top of the daily sotd this week. My 10-year-old niece dresses herself a lot like that, but of course her clothes are from Target and Justice, lol. Her sartorial choices seem to channel 1980’s punk + 1970s Florida retiree. Nothing matches, lots of brights, florals, and leopard prints. As far as accessories go, too much is never enough. She’s a darling.

Not to scare anybody, but my dad had RMSF about fifteen years ago. He never saw the tick and barely noticed the bite; he never had the rash common to the early stages of infection. Took his doctors four months to accurately diagnose and treat him. It led to severely reduced pancreatic function and, later, diabetes.

Y’all be careful out there. Robin, I do hope you recover completely and quickly.

You know, after spending too much time today doing research, it’s silly to worry about Lyme, it’s not likely anymore that you get “just” Lyme since so many ticks are carrying one or more tick borne disease and all the symptoms at least partially overlap and all the testing is not as accurate as one would like, and most doctors either don’t test or only test for Lyme. I was worried about taking abx when I wasn’t sure if I was infected, but after doing more reading, I wonder if everyone in PA shouldn’t be taking abx yearly just in case.

So sorry about your dad, that’s awful.

I like Amazone very much, but it seems such a dated composition, what with the aldehydes and the complicated florals. I mean, when I’m wearing it I am quite conscious that it’s not au courant. Funny, isn’t it, that No. 19 is older but seems less dated. I only have a mini of Amazone, which is probably all I’d ever need.

I was going to wear Givenchy Amarige Harvest Mimosa this morning to contrast with yesterday’s Une Fleur de Cassie, but instead my hand went straight for Salome. Yum.

In other news, my order from Essenza-Nobile did Finally Arrive, and it was correct. Plus, they sent me 11 samples (none of the ones I asked for, but I am giving them credit for generosity.) It appears to me that Germany changed its regulations for exporting perfume and E-N had to renegotiate with DHL. That would account for the diversion my package took to the Czech Republic in the interim. Has anyone noticed if their shipping rate increased? I know their minimum order to get free shipping went up tremendously.

Robin, hope you feel better soon!

Today doesn’t know what it wants to be so:

    SOTD = Chanel No. 5 L’Eau

It is so versatile and is fast shooting up as one of my Top, errrrr, 20. Yesterday, there was a discussion of “beginner Shalimar” and I forgot what the answer was. Anyway, my point for bringing this up is, IMHO, while the name has No. 5, I would not consider this beginner No. 5. In fact, it seems like a flanker for Eau Premier with most of the No. 5 bits removed.

Agree the troublesome bits of No. 5 were lopped off of L’eau, leaving behind a delightful top of fizzy lemon-lime soda, then (for me) it’s all clean musk musk musk.

The suggested “starter Shalimar” was Shaal Nur. :)

SOTM was Zoologist Hummingbird, which turned very musty and sour very quickly. Not for me, but will hold onto the sample to swap down the road. Going swimming soon. Not sure what will be SOT-rest-of-the-day, but thinking about a sample of the new Tory Burch Lavande that I got in Sephora last week.

I also didn’t like Hummingbird. The only other one ai’ve tested was Civet and it is nice. You have to like aldehydes to appreciate this.

I think so. Ehrlichiosis is the predominant tick-borne disease. Thankfully, most of the tick-borne infections can be treated with the same antibiotics (babesiosis is the exception, but IIRC, that is mostly in New England).

Robin, please do take care of yourself and follow through on the medical aspect of this…I have way too many horror stories around Lyme’s…it is not something to be trifled with but if you catch it early you are in good shape.

I don’t remember who was asking about Boucheron yesterday but fragrancenet has it for a song!

I am reeking havoc today in my attempt to finish up evaporated and nearly empty samples…I am bathed in Natori, no 22, Jour Ensoileille, Hanae Mori and Vanille Insensee all on different parts of my body…surprisingly it works :) (at least no one has complained yet!!)

    Keep calm and reek on!

    peace love light xxoo

It was me, haha! I see it on the discount sites a lot and also on evil bay. But again, I hate to blind buy (although at discount prices, it doesn’t really hurt the wallet).

    Wearing Love Shot today…

Supposed to be a modern chypre…but I get more of an an animalic fruitchouli.

It doesn’t wow me…and it wows me even less when I look at the full bottle prices. Sweet Morphine is nice but I don’t think I shall be compelled to get more of it when my decant is drained.

I wonder if Ex Nihilo will be around in 5 to 10 years…I wonder if many niche houses will be in general given the prices and market saturation actually…

Test driving Guerlain’s Myrrhe & Delires from a small decant given to me in a swap. It’s a very pretty myrrh and incense fragrance with the typical vanilla-tonka Guerlinade base. Not going to scratch the itch of those who prefer the heavy hitters like Avignon, LAVS, or La Myrrhe, but it’s easy to wear and office friendly. Surprisingly, it doesn’t have quite the longevity of most Guerlain exclusifs, at least not on my skin. Very pretty, but not on my must-have list from Guerlain, which is a relief, as it’s discontinued.

Hi Robin, I hope you’ll be feeling better soon.

I’ve not managed to keep up to date with NST while I’ve been on holiday. I’m now in Prague, which is amazing. I was here for a day way back in 1988, so having a week here is giving me a chance to see the place properly. I spent the day wafting Armani Privé Bois d’Encens, which seems fittingly churchy-incensy for the environment.

Sorry to hear that you are not feeling well Robin. Hopefully it will not bother you very much.

SOTD = back to the sample stash with a bit of vintage Poison Esprit de Parfum. Definitely a relative to Diorama. Also not as strong as I remember Poison being back in the day. However, I did not ever sniff the Parfum then, only the EdC and EdT. Maybe it was the other concentrations that were the perfume Godzillas??

There never was a parfum when it was launched in 1985: they did eau de toilette, eau de parfum, and esprit de parfum, which was as strong a concentration as there was, and that was plenty strong. (They may have concocted a parfum later: I don’t know.) The eau de cologne came along a few years later, and it was wonderful — much lighter and fresher than the attack-dog edp but still obviously Poison.

Wearing Eau de Givenchy (not vintage though). It’s a mere whisper of what I was back in the day; I think I went through 2 or 3 bottles then as it was a summer staple but it’s bringing back some fond memories now.
