Wednesday scent of the day 4/26

Posted by Robin on 26 April 2017 251 Comments

Givenchy's Spring Summer 2017 fashion campaign

Happy Hump Day, and Happy World Intellectual Property Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in vintage Eau de Givenchy.

Reminder: on 4/28, will it be Gucci or Givenchy? Pick one and make your case, or wear one of each.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top images are from Givenchy's Spring / Summer 2017 fashion campaign.

Apres l’Ondee. Pretty but fleeting. Next time I’ll pour the rest of my sample to see if I get better results.

Love Sycomore, I wore it yesterday. I’ve been thinking recently it was a bit harsh but was reaching the end of a decant and it may have been evaporating. From the bottle yesterday it was gorgeous.

Both sycomore and box of eels were full bottle blind buys based on input and comments from all you enablers out there. And they quickly became beloved by me.

I didn’t do everything I had planned yesterday, I wanted to go to a museum but after lunch out with a friend, I came home and drank MF tea and watched A Room with a View.

Today I was planning on doing some more sniffing around the city, at some independent pharmacies but the rain..blah…don’t feel like moving.

The kiss in the poppy field in Room with a View! I think I once watched it 20 times in a row and wore a rut of romantic longing in the VHS tape while my beloved was deployed in the Middle East.

I had the biggest crush on Julian Sands through HS. Rupert Graves seems to have stayed busy since then, recently(ish) resurfacing in the Worricker Triology, which is a fantastic series (available on amazon prime). It also has some amazing actors, many from that era (Helena Bonham Carter, Judy Davis, Winona Ryder.)

I remember seeing Room with a View and ‘My Beautiful Launderette’ in 1985. The films came out the same day and I was very impressed that Daniel Day Lewis played two characters so very different. That was it! He became one of my favourite actors. I just noticed on IMDB his birthday is this Saturday the 29th. He turns 60! How can that be??? :-)

I’m digging deep this week: SOTD is vintage Piguet Futur from a large decant I got in a swap-meet a billion years ago. It smells like glorious green velvet goodness on a damp spring day. I haven’t worn this in so long – I’m happy to be reacquainted! It’s definitely a classic green chypre masterpiece.

I also do well with the Piguet line. Even the current Futur is a bracing green to my nose similar to Gucci Envy. I liked Cravache and Calypso too and wore those samples up. I have a bottle the current Baghari and it is really beautiful, and a decant of the Gardenia, and Fracas! So many!! I am sure I’d have more but I’ve not sniffed the newer of the collection.

The clinic I go to asks if I’m wearing perfume, then asks me to remove it with a wipe. (They also ask if I’m wearing deodorant and act shocked when I say, “yes.”) Last time I remembered the drill and sprayed down my clothes instead of body. Hope your appointment goes well!

I wore Givenchy III this morning. I have a mini and it’s the only thing I have from either house. First time I tried it I was a bit under the weather, thought ‘ack! too much oak moss!’ and put it away. I did enjoy it this morning though; there’s a rather boozy fruitiness too. Don’t think I’ll ever need a bottle but nice.

Now wearing vintage YsL Y edt, a recent ebay acquisition.

    Happy Wednesday!

    1) SOtD: Organza. SO that is amazing, really- a very beautiful white flower fragrance, with this interesting buttery note grounding it. For a floral oriental though, I think I prefer Boucheron!

    2) Rain rain rain rain and rain so more. But everything is a deep, fresh green, and so many flowers! “April showers bring May flowers” indeed!

I do not love the rain but we had such a drought here last year that I am thankful for every drop we get this spring! And it does make everything green and lush!

I need to try Boucheron, I don’t think I’ve ever smelled it.

        1) The drought these past years kinda made people forget that we usually have very rainy springs in the PNW!

        2) Please do try next time you are in a department. Not a blind buy, but very, very beautiful! :-)

Not a drop of Givenchy or Gucci in the house. Amazing. I thought I’d find something… but nope.

In the last of Pulp from a decant. A Happy, pretty scent.

Missing Annikky. Planning a meal that she’d appreciate and one of the dishes is from Persiana, a book she recommended.

In honor of my son in Jordan and also for heck of it, as it stands right now our dinner party on Saturday will include:

    Baba Ganoush and flatbread
    Scallops w shaved fennel
a “green” couscous (gazillions of fresh herbs)
    Kofta b’siniyah (lamb)
    spiced chickpea salad
“black” fruit salad (blackberries and blood oranges w candied peel)

My husband is angling for me to make a themed cocktail as well, but I cannot think what it would be other than something with Compari. Any suggestions for a Mediterranean cocktail?

The green couscous is from Ottolenghi’s Plenty, which is not a vegetarian cookbook, but is full of really great vegetarian and vegan dishes. (Obviously I am not a vegetarian, but in case anyone is :-) ! )

The other cookbooks are Persiana, Jerusalem, and Silver Palate (yes an oldie, but a goodie!)

That meal sounds amazing. As for a cocktail.. do any liquor stores in your area carry Raki or Arak? It would be region-appropriate. They can be anise-flavored but aren’t always, so that’s maybe something to consider if you’re not wild about anise flavor.

And Ouzo! I get a memory hangover just thinking about those three. A very good friend taught at Harvard and was active in the Harvard College Hellenic Society…which led me to many nights in the back rooms of Greek restaurants near Harvard Square–eating, dancing, karaoke, and too too much drinking. Suffice it to say a marriage proposal was not an unexpected event those evenings. . .

I just smelled Womanity in the wild at preschool drop off. Personally, I am not a fig fan but I love recognizing perfumes on others.

Today I comparing French Kiss and Misia EDT and will cut to the chase…they are very similar…gasp…no real surprise but, you know, science and all that…

French Kiss is sweeter and creamier and Misia is more floral and sharper. And plenty of violet in both…”Violet, you’re turning violet!” ;)

I think if I surveyed my forearms to most people, they would not detect differences and say I am wearing the same perfume on both arms. But, for all the perfume aficionados such as yourselves, there are some subtle differences…keyword is subtle here.

If I had a third arm and some Lipstick On or Lipstick Rose I could add another variable but maybe another day.

I shall weigh in later with their respective evolutions. :)

The French Kiss is still sweeter with more pronounced violet and vanilla. The Misia is more floral w/ iris and rose peeking through.

      In the dry down now…

The French Kiss is sweet, fading violet. The Misia is bit stronger with really lovely powdery iris.

Misia might win it all in the dry down methinks. Chanel does iris exceptionally well.

Disclosure: I am an iris fan. ;)

I’m in Hermes Vetiver Tonka on the left and Eau des Merveilles Bleue on the right.
I was going to AB the two vetivers from Hermes and Diptyque, but my Nordies sample of Vetiverio has gone MIA since yesterday, ugh. So Bleue seemed like it would be a good mix. Not liking the Bleue! Something in it comes across like anise or fennel in the first hour of wear. Maybe it’s the marine note – has anyone experienced this?

Also smelling of eau de puppygirl this morning – we’re trying to get her high blood pressure under control. She’s nervous at the vets office, so had to cuddle her a bunch and give her good scritches to get her calm enough to get a good BP reading.

For me there are fresh oregano leaves in EdM Bleue. Very unusual! I like that part.

I’ll try to find something for the Friday project but for today – PoaL. Since I’m going to the office, I didn’t dare more than one spritz. I like it very much but do not wear too often.

Trying a sample of Guerlain Santal Royal, I had to right, since Luca Turin gave it 1 star. :D Also, I forgot to add in yesterday’s shower gel poll that one of my all -time favorites is Kiehl’s musk! the scent lingers and I think it’s great for the price point. $18 for 8.4 oz. I believe that’s cheaper than Lush, which is $20 for the same size. (my husband loves it too. both the price and the scent. hah)

Gucci EDP (2002 original release) today. I love, love this and am so happy to have two decants. I’ve had them both for about 6-7 years and neither has evaporated or gone off, phew. It’s powdery, creamy, heliotrope, musky goodness.

    SotD = 24 Faubourg EdT

The remains of 24F from last night are so pretty that I’ve spritzed it again this morning. Wonderful.

Enjoying this weeks theme very much. Judging from the comments so far, methinks I must dig up a sample of Organza or Organza Indecence I have hiding somewhere.

So funny! I’ve been reading reviews and thinking about Shalimar for the past few days. Robin’s lemming for that limited edition peacock bottle got me going yesterday.

I want to love Shalimar because it’s Guerlain, because of the bottle, because of the romantic backstory. But I’ve not yet found a Shalimar that I can wear, though I’ve only tried a few of them. The smoke overwhelms me.

There are so many old and new Shalimar variations. I’m sure there’s one out there for me. Perhaps the EdC or the Souffle de Parfum, but who knows. :) Until I figure it out I’ll just enjoy L’Heure Bleue and Jardins de Bagatelle.

FWIW, I’ve re-sniffed my sample of EdM Bleue and I think it’s a big no-no for me, lol, the white musk is like a stab in the nose.

Ah, you are right, I forgot that you had issues with Bleue. Oops.
I have big love for Shalimar – that bottle yesterday was gorgeous. Now L’Heure Bleue, I’ve tried that one on skin at a counter, and I could tell it wasn’t for me. It was so, well, BLUE. I can admire it, because it’s beautiful, and will probably try it again periodically, but no FB.

And you’re right, there are so many Shalimars out there. I’m just starting to scratch the surface. But, then, that’s the fun of it. :)

I am with you on this one – I am not a heavy sprayer but I am with No. 19 and No. 19 Poudre. I have been wearing those two so much lately. Tonight, I had on No. 19 and just had this compulsion and layered it with Rania J T. Habernero. The combo is surprisingly good. Reminds me a tiny bit of Bulgari Black because I get an almost-tire like scent….

Hi, all. Today is a grey day, colder and overcast, and this headache persists, making me feel slightly woozy and stupid. I’m not sure I can face a perfume at all, but if I can, it will be something I adore, such as La Pausa, not a Little Loved bottom-shelfer. I will try to understand one of that group another day when I’m bouncing about like Tigger and annoying the hell out of people with my energy and enthusiasm. That’s the trouble with rules and regimes: they assume a perfect state if being. I really only logged in today that I love all your choices. You smell wonderful.

Won ‘t be posting tomorrow or Saturday because we’re hurtling south to Whanganui and back, to see the dear man’s mother and also (I confess, this is more my motivation) to take a carload of tools and stuff down to the house. I will wear my project scent once I get there: Ysatis. My Australian sister used to wear this and Nuit de Longchamps, and as a teen, I thought these perfumes the pinnacle of sophistication, something I would never reach but badly wanted to. I loved it when she would give me a dab (I don’t remember spray bottles) when she was dressing up to go out. I’ll be interested to see how I categorise Ysatis and how it wears on me. Hope it isn’t a Little Loved.

    Be well, all.

I’ve been thinking about Shaal Nur lately and remembered to put some on this a.m. My initial response to it was, “Mmm – Shalimar for a man!” – I think it would smell amazing on a guy. Smells good on me, too ;)

I think I’ve finally broken through the flu I woke up with last Monday. I hadn’t had time to rest or recover as we moved last Friday, but yesterday I took the day off after having slept for over 10 hrs the night before but waking up feeling horrid.

We’ve moved in with my parents (temporarily – we needed to get out of our apartment, but didn’t want to commit to a new year-long lease anywhere) who live in a house that was built 100 years ago, i.e., on a small scale for the way people lived then. It’s also packed full with what my parents have accumulated living here for 40 years.

Long story short – we can’t just move our stuff in. I have to pull everything out, reorganize, clean-out, merge, and rejigger every inch of space and stuff to fit any of our belongings in their house. Today’s task: full reorg of the kitchen, laundry room and pantry. *sigh*

I might add that we started this project in February: cleaned-out and reorganized 4 closets and the garage, emptied the extra bedroom we’re staying in, and put some of their furniture in storage so we’d have a place to sleep. My work here may never be done…

Very good luck with the reorganizing, and you do smell great!

I think Shaal Nur is also a great “starter Shalimar”, more so than the starter Shalimars made by Guerlain.

Ooooh! Thank you for the comment about Shaal Nur. I’ve been pondering where to look for a “starter Shalimar.”

Darn that peacock bottle from yesterday, it’s oh-so-pretty. I’m lemming hard, but Shalimar’s smoke and leather have put me off in the past.

In the meantime I’m enjoying the Shalimar and Shal-adjacent fragrance reviews here on NST. :)

hi kpaint! Hope you can rest and continue to feel better. I know your frustration first hand from my time living with my parents who also haven’t moved in 40 years. We were amazed at what we managed to fit in their house! It seemed like the struggle would never end, but it was worth it as we all did the hard work of letting go of some things. Hang in there.

Vintage eau de Givenchy was the one that got away…never did buy a full bottle but I adored it in the early 80s….my best friend recently sent me a half evaporated decant and I had forgotten how absolutely wonderful it is/was…

crazy day today of meetings all day so I went with something innocuous and non offensive….Assam of India…tomorrow I am going to continue on my quest of draining many of my 1/4 full sample vials and reek some more havoc a la Holly!

Vintage Eau de Gucci today and not really loving it; I think it’s too heavy for late spring.

Also, Eau de Gucci is reminding me of VC&A First, which I don’t care for. I thought I liked First when I smelled it once in the 80s, but now I find it such a bludgeon. Tania Sanchez summed it up in The Guide: “It smells rich and humorless, an ideal perfume for intimidation.”

Eau de Gucci is not as heavy and opaque, and therefore better, to my nose, but I think its time might be fall.

    SOTD = DSH Oeillets Rouges

Spicy carnation sweetened with beeswax. I can’t help but wonder if the molecular structure of the perfume makes atomizers unsuitable as an applicator. To-date, I had experienced 2 atomizer fails. I’m on my 3rd atomizer and it spritzed out a jet stream instead of a diffused cloud. In any case, my over-application didn’t hurt anyone and boy, I do smell wonderful.

I had been meaning to try some Macys perfume offerings and I did just that with a no-buy sniff-and-run (I had a teain to catch!)

Mugler Angel Kryptomint – Sorry Angel and/or Angel flanker fans, this smelled like Angel + vomit. Also, while I like green, the shade of this one made me think of it as Pepto-Bismol Mint Green (I know it’s usually pink but it was a pukey flat uninspiring green)

Jo Malone Star Magnolia – nothing special; just a generic citrusy top and a sheer floral heart.

I made the mistake of trying Ex Nihilo Citizen X tonight. The notes sounded so nice, but it is blindingly bright and has one of those woody notes I hate. I had to scrub it off with laundry detergent.

If you try it, please test on paper first, and start with minute amounts if you move on to skin.
