Wednesday scent of the day 4/12

Posted by Robin on 12 April 2017 210 Comments

Vinyl record, Elvis Costello Good Year For The Roses

It's Hump Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Parfums de Nicolaï Rose Royale, a cheerful rose scent for a medley of sad rose songs, featuring two old favorites and one new: Elvis Costello covering Jerry Chestnut's Good Year for the Roses, Billy Bragg & Wilco covering Woody Guthrie's When The Roses Bloom Again, and The Zombies doing A Rose For Emily, inspired by the Faulkner story (yes, I just finished S-Town).*

Reminder: 4/14 will be Playlist Friday — name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

* Videos: Elvis (on vinyl), Billy Bragg, Zombies.

Muscs Koublai Khan for the retro goth pop glamour of Shakespears Sister’s Goodbye Cruel World. I went to see them in 1992 and it’s still one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to.
Here’s Siobhan and Marcella hamming it up a storm for Goodbye Cruel World, one of my favourite videos ever:

        Ah you are wearing MKK!

I Totally forgot to try that one when i was in the SL store almost 2 weeks ago. :( It’s hard to get samples or decants in Europe from the bell jars. I once ordered samples of a few bell jars from TPC. Insanity. :)

Whats it like? Do you love it?

I do, but I have quite the tolerance for the dirtier sides of perfume, and it ain’t no laundry musk! But it does read quite cosy, like warm fur, to my nose.

I havent find out (yet) where my tolerance for musk/dirty ends, but I do like Salome (Papillon) a lot….(and that is supposed to be quite animalic right?)

    RIP J. Geils.
I met the band in the’70s as a busboy in a hotel restaurant. Bawdy and fun for my 15 year old self.
    Flamethrower, VERY LOUDLY PLAYED.
    J’adore L’or, just ’cause.
Troublemaker me, what is with the ‘cold shoulder’ clothing? !?!?
I think I’ll take one of my suits and have the tailor remove the shoulders, shirt too.
    LOL ;)
Fashion, we are the goon squad and we’re comin’ to town- BEEP BEEP!
    :D
    Carpe Diem.
    Triple strength coffee.
    Peace.

The other day I heard Pete Wolf doing a guest dj stint on Tom Petty Radio, and he was quite entertaining & played some obscure music I’d never heard before, always a plus in my book. What a cool memory to have encountered the band.

Ach Bear, as a plus size woman I too question what the deal is with cold shoulder clothing. I have been doing some much needed shopping for spring/summer online and that cold shoulder stuff is everywhere!

Great memory about J. Geils. I managed a small Mexican restaurant in Houston in the early 80s and Billy Gibbons came in for lunch one weekday all by himself. This was in the days of multiple carbon receipts for credit cards, we were all in awe of his autograph lol.

I don’t know, as a plus size woman I can say that my shoulders are about the only part of my body that have stood up well over time.

Two years ago I bought a cute white cold shoulder top. I wore it in summer at the beach/on holiday, paired it with jean shorts and flip flops. Thats the way you should wear them imo. :)
I hope they stay away from the office/business/formal occasions.

I’m a 5th generation Florida Gulf of Mexico beach native, haven’t worn even the most lightweight cotton sweater for more than a year, and don’t get it either. In my world, that trend offers only the unpleasant possibility of being both overheated from long sleeves AND sunburned on the shoulders. No thanks.

I am in the new Naja from Vero Profumo today thanks to a fantastic friend who sent me a sample from the European Trade Show circuit.
Beautiful powdery leather with a clean citrus opening and something running underneath ( not sure what yet – osmanthus perhaps).
    Another stunner from Vero Kern.

    SOTD is Heeley “Cardinal”.

    Top: Flax, pink pepper and black pepper;
    Mid: labdanum, incense and myrrh;
    Base: vetiver, amber and patchouli.

A very nice incense with a sweet, almost gourmand undernote.

I’m actually wearing it as shifting themes into Holy Week (in a sort of ‘scent tourist’ rather than devotional way, it has to be said). If pressed to match a song to it, I think Frankie Goes To Hollywood “The Power of Love”, although I suspect the association is in my mind only. Perhaps a more fitting match would be Allegri’s “Miserere”, with its mix of the sacramental and the sweet.

Wearing my last drops of Parfum de Nicolai New York today. Rather than the Frank Sinatra version of New York, this scent smells more like Luck Be a Lady to me, also by Frank of course. My inner cosmopolitan sophistication is well camouflaged by my very Midwest, middle aged exterior :)

Listening to a mix of classical music – Morning from the Peer Gynt Suite among other things – and wearing DSH White Tulip. Green, earthy and just a little bit floral. Smells like spring in the woods to me.

Tom Ford Black Orchid Voile de Fleure, pairing with Eartha Kitt’s Uska Dara, which I just looked up. Apparently that was a huge song for her! I picked up a record with it in the dollar bin and was pleased. I think she’d wear something musky but still floral. I can’t imagine what she wrote on the 40’s and 50’s. Maybe Fracas?

    Wednesday!

    1) Trying commute yesterday-I think I lost a part of my soul. First, a downtown building was threatening to crumble, then there was a shooting at a mall. Everything on mass transit was snarled.

    2) SOTD: Anatomy of a Fragrance: Blue Fig. Verdict on this: I got it on sale for $20, and so it was worth it: It’s light, non milky, spicy fig fragrance that you can spray generously and not offend anyone.

    3) Coffee, yogurt, gluten free granola; will be followed by a much needed 2 mile run at lunch.

    Song: Minnie Riperton’s Loving You.
Scent: Pure White Linen. It matches the music video and the “sunshine and singing birds” vibe really well. Refreshing and just a little sweet and fruity.

Layering option: Secretions Magnifique. Yes. I know. But before you judge me, please listen to the lyrics… :P

        PS
Have been keeping up with you on youtube and you are a shower gel aficionado
I keep 2 shower soaps in the shower, one is a foam that I also use as a shaving cream and one is a shower oil. Then I have one back up and that is it. That is my rule of thumb. Just in case you wanted another perspective. When I get that itch that I need something different I use my husbands bar soap or a little of my babies bath bubble soap, or wash with my shampoo.

I’m in ELDO Rossy de Palma which is reminding me a little of FM Superstitious, at least my memory of it. I could be totally off but I might need to reevaluate the FM since I love Rossy. My song pick is too obvious, maybe, but a great song and artist: Edith Piaf La Vie En Rose.

Somehow I missed this one when TF was still in cahoots with Lauder. I believe the TF/Lauder years were good years and will stand up to the test of time in some historical perfume book. ;)

Want to share two rando things google sent me then go back to bed:

Just like a perfume reformulation, a cover of a song can be wonderful or terrible. I think this one is perfect. My hair stands on end at about 02:50, but look away if you never want to hear Radiohead’s Creep again (NSFW language)

Une Fleur de Cassie today, one of my favourite spring florals. Im not sure about what song to pair this one to, something extravagant and dramatic, maybe a Kate Bush song?, I thought Wuthering Heights, but obviously no Cassie/mimosas on the freezing winter Yorkshire moors! Chiming in again with two random smelly tidbits:

1). A library patron this morning discovered a scented crayon in our crayon bin. No clue where it came from, but it’s scent was “dirt.” Yes, it REALLY smells like dirt.

Tiny rant here: I placed an order with Essenza-Nobile on March 4. One of the items was out of stock, but I received a notice on Monday that the shipment had been sent. I followed the DHL tracking and this morning it stated that my package had arrived in the destination country–the Czech Republic. Uh, no. I’ve sent an email…

Today I’m sampling FM Superstitious. The rose is very prominent on me, and I’m picky about rose. This one is not going to become a favorite. The overall impression I get is the scent of a rose guest soap in a not-too-high-end B&B.

Music pairing for today is Billy Joel’s That’s Not Her Style.

SOTD – 10 sprays of Coromandel EDT. Added 2 to the usual 8 sprays for a good measure :)

Wearing Apres L’Ondee on wrist/wrist/elbow crease, and 31 Rue Cambon on remaining elbow crease. First time trying either one, from samples from my truly ridiculous TPC order when they were having their 25% off sale. This is sounding like a seriously dorky post, but there it is. :)

Both are EdT. Not the best choice for a pairing, as the Rue Cambon is outpacing the Guerlain. I had to reapply the Guerlain after 10 minutes, since it basically disappeared.

I can see how the Rue Cambon would be a great everyday, every event kind of choice, but neither one of these are really moving me! Maybe I’ll try them again in a few days….separately. Am I missing something, or are they just not for me??

Morning all. Thursday! Thank heavens that some days and nights roll on and away. Yesterday was pretty bad, but it’s over. Today I am working at home –yay!– wearing Rahat Loukoum, and its mellow sweetness is exactly the comfort I want. The opening is a vivid swoosh of an imagined Turkish delight– “imagined” because I certainly have never smelt and Turkish delight that smells as good as this. It’s Turkish delight elevated and idealised. Yum, yummier, yummiest! The drydown is just a gentle whisper of almond and cherry and sugar, as though I had perched in someone’s kitchen as they made Easter treats, and the smell of sugar and love had adhered to my clothes and skin. I’m too tired to think intelligently of a music pairing, but for some reason I have a desire to listen to Carmen. No, it’s OK, I completely agree–that’s a random connection made by a tired and worried brain.

Please, every, be careful of yourselves, be well, and be happy.

What a day thus far. I go into work today far later than I normally do. I go to get the mail because I was expecting part of my STC order. I tear open the package and was greeted with a huge blast of Epic Man. Peering into the package the decant was broken. I just sent an e-mail to STC and see what they say. So I have just applied Shalimar for a little bit of comfort.

Biblioteca de Babel today….warm and woody and cinnamon vanilla. Not a FB love but enjoying the sample. It does make me think of libraries and all the wooden shelves. Maybe some Clair de Lune with it.

It’s rainy and dour, again, and a day with teaching and meetings (again) so I’m busting out some stash drops and 1 spray of patchouli 24, because maybe soon it’ll be too hot for such a smoky combo?

Hump Day can’t get me down: last night I DVR-ed the single best X-Files episode (“Bad Blood”) and can now watch it whenever I please.

SOTD is MFK Baccarat Rouge 540 because the “woody breeze” FK created with ambergris and woods feels Viking-esque to me. I had to find something to pair with “Immigrant Song”, which has been stuck in my head since the weekend when I saw this:

Trust me, if you haven’t seen it, it’s worth watching for the end! ????

Another pick from the sample stash. SOTD = TF Oud Wood EdP. Darn it, I like this. My wallet does not.

I don’t want to drink my whiskey like you do
I don’t need to spend my money but still do
Well don’t stop now come on
Another drop now so come on
I want a lot now so come on
    That’s why
    That’s why
    I say
Ma mama weer all crazee now…

Quiet Riot covering Slade. Inspired by the very true-to-life phenol note in the TF Oud Wood.

No scent for me…was sick all day today with a bad stomach flu which my visiting brother from SF had on Sunday. A three day incubation no less. :(

I haven’t feel this particular kind of sick in literally a decade or more. So I am choosing to be grateful that it is has been that long and hopeful that my poor little 3 year old doesn’t get it. She is actually almost 4 and has one had one episode of stomach troubles ear whole life so far if you get my drift…which I like to think is a splendid run. ;)

Morning: Jasmin et Cigarette, for the nightflowering song Fake Empire. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KehwyWmXr3U

Evening: My new Dame Gardenia Soliflore, the first from the house I’ve really fallen for, paired with Soul Coughing’s Soft Serve because it reminds me of my time in Georgia.

BTW this week I have come up with waaaay more song pairings than we have days…
