Happy International Louie Louie Day! What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in vintage Jean Patou Joy, for a vintage song, Helen Humes singing Bill, originally written by PG Wodehouse.* Tea at the moment is plain old Irish Breakfast, and lots of it.
Reminder: 4/14 will be Playlist Friday — name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: the Record Player Full Size Teapot ("Inspired by the iconic Dansette record player from the 1960’s, the retro shape will bring the memories gushing back. A superb contemporary addition to any collection, and a great gift idea for any record fan.Vinyl Rules, OK! W 12” (30cms). Each unique piece comes with a certificate of authenticity and is hand made in the UK with the skill and craftsmanship expected of fine English ceramics.") is £79.99 at Owl Barn Gifts.
*You can hear the Helen Humes version on this YouTube video. It seems to be playing over movie footage, I have no idea what the movie is or why. You can see the original Wodehouse lyrics here.
What are you looking at?
What do I have that is glamorous, a tad aloof, self assured and a shameless show-off. Tom Fords Black Orchid that’s what!
It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white
If you’re a boy or a girl
If the music’s pumpin’ it will give you new life
You’re a superstar
Yes, that’s what you are
You know it…
I may have been known to strike a pose or two when I was younger…
Soul is in the musical
That’s where I feel so beautiful
Life’s a ball
So get up on the dance floor
BobH, you made my day! There was already about a 98% chance my song pick for Friday would be from Madge. I feel like now it’s gonna be even harder to choose something else.????
Standing in front of Saks fifth Avenue , made the journey to New York City, and was staring at you huge bottles of number 19 Poudre that had just got released. In my headphones I was listening to Cat Stevens wild world. SOTD 19 Poudre
what a great chance to sniff, enjoy
Love that flashback…..
I am wondering if any other city dwellers remember that release. Sak’s windows were just adorned with these huge bottles..such a great memory.
Lovely choice. Wild world reminds me of my Dad, who is a big Cat Stevens fan, and used to play Tea for the Tiller man a lot during my childhood, and then I played it a lot in my teens.
aww! What a nice memory
SOTD is Histoires de Parfums 1876, aka as Mata Hari. I’m rubbish at dancing so in a way this perfume should not suit me. It’s a retro spicy rose however, and I find it very wearable and not all that exotic.
SOTD Tom Ford Vert de Fleur. I like this one very much; it manages to be both crisp and plush even though it’s not particularly complex. It fits the grey spring day quite well. Hopefully my decant will last a while!
I really like this one too! You smell great.
I wore Tom Ford Vert de Fleur yesterday!
Vintage Diorissimo edt, a new eBay acquisition. It’s lovely. Not sure about a song but something clear and soprano.
Vintage Diorissimo EDT is so pretty. You smell wonderful!
How about a song by Maria Callas if you like opera..
Big meeting this morning in which I have far too big a role to play in someone’s professional fate. Chanel 22 and a serious face. I am wearing it from my exclusives exclusive scent bar and if all goes well am going to get myself a bottle!
This sounds high stakes and quite exciting. I hope you end up with a bottle
Hope your meeting goes well. You smell amazing..
22 is a great choice for a serious meeting. Best of luck!
Hope the meeting goes swimmingly! You smell lovely.
Oh, that’s dramatic- and #22 is a great choice!
Over dramatic of course! 22 and I did our bit and now it is up to the deciders.
Wearing Malle’s l’eau d’hiver body lotion and EDP today.
One of my favourite scents would pair perfectly with one of my favourite pieces of music – The overture to The Marriage of Figaro.
You smell beautiful.
This is great..playing the youtube video while riding some emails..
writing..not riding..giddy up! lol
Testing a sample from Nicolaï: Kiss Me Intense. Don’t like it. I’ve decided that vanilla + almond is too sweet and too gourmand a combo for my taste.
(However, it’s still much better than those horrible annoying cloying invading omnipresent sugary caramel notes like La Vie est belle, La Petite Robe…)
Did you ever try the original? I really liked it, but it was sweet, and I think it’s now discontinued. Have not tried the Intense.
No I haven’t smelled the original. I don’t think I’ll like it either.
That one was odd to me. I got corn husks and bananas.
Not taking myself so seriously.
Gavotte-ING in my apricot scarf wearing Egoiste.
Try it sometime.
Triple strength coffee.
I think the scarf is perfect for Gavotting.
With that scarf, shouldn’t you be walking into parties like you’re walking onto a yacht? Maybe one will show up. I’ll cross my fingers!
Clouds in your triple strength coffee?
you probably think this song is about you….
Divine (Providence Perfume Co)
followed by Heaven (Gap- 1994)
paired with Justin Hayward
another dose of this mellifluous voice for all of you Moody Blues fans-
I grew up listening to the Moody Blues because my parents were BIG fans! <3
Yikes..now I feel old…LOL!
All kidding aside, the Moody Blues really are a classic and timeless band..there’s a reason their music is still liked fifty years later (kinda like the Eagles )
California Dreamin’ in Neroli Outrenoir. Nothing black or “beyond black” about this one to me. Just sunny, bright citrus and neroli, a little tea with a drop of vanilla. Perfect for the expected high of 80 today!
You’re livin’ the dream ????
That is a great pairing!
Enjoy the summer like temperatures today. We were all out all morning ..now its nap time and nap time for me too..
Take one for me!!
I love Neroli Outrenoir, my SOTD yesterday!
In Gris Montaigne today and trying to figure out what’s left in my wardrobe (the bulk of it being at the dry cleaners) would complement my scent. Hmmm.
Twins with you in Gris Montaigne, thanks to Laura. I’m no good at figuring out what music (or outfit) complements a perfume, so I’ll leave that to the more creative minds here.
That’s where my GM came from too! Laura is a very kind and generous perfume fairy. All my grey seems to be at the cleaners, so my outfit ended up being black and white – black-and-white checked pencil skirt, black shell, black and white lace-patterned cardigan, black opaques, black suede heels. But I feel unfinished because I totally forgot to put earrings on. Naked ear lobes! (There must be a Weird Al Yankovich song for that.)
Ack! I hat nekkid ears. I really should keep a back up in my purse!
Coincidence that I’m wearing one of the daily lemmings!
SOTD: Coqui Coqui Coco Coco. Very realistic coconut, but there is something in the green notes that is so familar, but for the life of me I can’t identify…
I saw that post and it created a lemming for me because the price is outrageously inexpensive! Have you tried any others from this line?
Just this one, and just a sample! 6 hours in, and it’s just about gone now…..
Six hours? Not bad…and the set is seven 15ml bottles for only $70…what a bargain!
I have a full bottle of Maderas, which is their sandalwood perfume and
I absolutely love it. Longevity is excellent, it lasts all day and well into the evening on me, on my clothes for a couple of days! I am tempted by the set too. Unfortunately, adding on shipping to me in Australia makes it a bit less of a bargain, but I may just succumb anyway.
Have you ever put on a perfume and then forgotten what you were wearing? This morning at around 5 AM I sort-of woke up, got dressed, walked to the train station then fell asleep on the train. Over an hour later when I finally got to the office and took off my jacket this soft beautiful smell wafted up to my nose but I just couldn’t remember what It was. It finally came to me – SSS voile de violet.
Yeah, that’s happened more times than I care to admit.
What a wonderful scent to wake up from the commuting nap, though!
Laurie is a master with violets.
Yep, been there. But a consolation is that at least I usually think: “What is this great perfume I’m wearing” and not “What on Earth have I put on this morning, and what was I thinking?!”
Bastet, we are scent twins today
Yes, I have blanked on what the perfume of the day is.
First wearing of Le Jardin de Monsieur Li, from a decant I bought on sale. So far I like it almost as much as I like Sur le Toit, my favorite of the Jardins.
You smell great!
I’m wearing Noir de Noir today. It’s making me feel very Chrissie Hynde, so matching song is Tattooed Love Boys.
You smell faaaaabulous!
I’m trying By Kilian’s Flower of Immortality. The peach is totally causing a scent flashback to my early grad school days and my roommate from 1999-2000 who used some kind of peach body spray (and then covered it with Happy – it’s amazing that we didn’t suffocate!). I was listening to Everclear’s Sparkle and Fade album a lot in those days, so my song choice is “Summerland”.
We can leave this place
Go to Summerland
Just a name on a map
Sounds like heaven to me
Smelled in the wild: Pink Sugar at the symphony (!) Mozart’s Requiem was the piece. It was a little incongruous but the brief waft was unforgettable.
For Playlist week:
Baby, take off your coat–real slow…
Take off your shoes–I’ll take off your shoes, girl
Take off your dress–yes, yes, yes
You can leave your hat on
The incomparable Joe Cocker (RIP) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDR2fXoHdQw
I’m wearing a sample of Nasomatto Nuda.
Pink Sugar at the Symphony would be a flanker I would seek out!
At vet for Hunter-doggle’s annual checkup. Wearing Le Temps d’une Fete because it’s, you know, spring. Sigh.
My replacement teapot came yesterday (Amazon ftw!) and works fine. Will make some more decaf Earl Grey when I get home, and hang laundry on the line to dry.
I love PdN’s Le Temps d’une Fete – one of the favorites from her line. Another gorgeous floral!
Sotd is Gucci Guilty Absolute. Surprisingly well made.
If it wasn’t for the label, I would have said it’s a niche fragrance.
I was already curious, now even more! Going to look it up tomorrow in the local perfumery.
SOTD: Derek Lam’s Ellipsis.
Ran out the house commando and this is the sample I have in my bag.
Exact same thing happened for me so I am in Eau de Marveilles Ambre.
Spring is springing in the Land of Cleve so I’ve decided to spend the week in Ostara.
Sounds like a great plan to me.
Needing a dose of optimism and rays of sunshine so today I am wearing L’Etrog and humming:
Now if I can feel the sun
In my eyes
And the rain on my face
Why can’t I
I can really love, really love
Really love, Really love, Really love
Love love love love love love love love. . . .
Sing me another love song
But this time
With a little dedication
Sing it, sing it
You know that’s what I like
Once more with feeling
Give me love, give me love, give me love
Hope everything turns out well, OF.
1) Came home yesterday afternoon to golden sunshine coming in from the windows and patio door. The light illuminated the paint samples beautifully.
2) SOTD: JM Amber &Ginger Lily. It was damned chilly this am whenI woke up (37!) and really needed something light, but with a bit of warmth.
3) Muckity mucks are out from NY, so am in a grey suit with Spanx underneath. I am so held in. Pray for me.
#2 lovely (one of my favorites)
#3 sending prayers …….and thanks for the laugh on “in a grey suit with Spanx underneath” …hope it holds you together figuratively as well as literally until the “muckity mucks” depart
I look sleek, but I dare not even breathe too deeply!
#3 almost made me spit out my coffee on my keyboard. Prayers sent.
Sorry about that!
Wearing Dzing! for my birthday. My Tuesdays are very long, but Dzing! and the anticipation of my birthday bottle (not to mention new shoes arriving later today!) will help me cope. Also, I have chocolate chip cookies with my lunch – always nice.
I seem to also be getting whiffs of SSS Rose Volupté, which I wore yesterday. Or Dzing!’s developed a new fruity rose note since I last wore it. I like the combination, anyway.
Big bad bestest birthday wishes to ya!
Hope it is a great birthday despite the long day!
A birthday bottle, new shoes, chocolate chip cookies….man, that sounds like a pretty great day! Hope it’s a great birthday for you!
Enjoy your day
Agree w/ KellyC…perfume, shoes and cookies…seems like all key bases are covered. Happy birthday!
Happy Birthday! Chocolate chip cookies are always a great treat, and you smell glamorous indeed!
Happy birthday scent twin!
Happy birthday! Hoping you’re long day is over, and you’re having a fantastic evening wearing new shoes, and wafting a gorgeous new perfume! (What is it?!)
Dzing!, Rose Volupté, and chocolate chip cookies sound like a good start to me. Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday! Sounds like you are celebrating in style.
Happy Birthday! My Tuesday’s are long, too. My first meeting was at 7:30 this morning and my last one ends at 10:30 tonight!
It’s a warm day here, so 4711 cologne for me. I wore all kinds of citrus when I was in college, so my soundtrack for today is one of my favorite late 90s roadtrip mixtapes. It’s a mix of REM, Indigo Girls, Dave Matthews, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucinda Williams, Barenaked Ladies, Gin Blossoms …you get the picture
I think I have nearly the same playlist on my ipod
yes to 4711 (that takes me back to my childhood when bottles of 4711 were ubiquitous in my house) and yes to Mary Chapin Carpenter.
Temperatures have dropped. This spring morning started cold, I am wearing Fahrenheit, Dior.
I did not choose it with a perfect song match in mind. But while I was wearing it, the delicate transparent violet and sturdy leather combo remind me of the antithesis in shoegaze music (one of the genres I grew up with and love). Wall of noise of blurring guitars, distorted and all, AND angelic ethereal singing = Slowdive. https://youtu.be/2INLBsRYVBs
For me this scent that walks the small line between natural and artificial, blunt and sensitive, earth and sky, between this world and an alien world
It’s wet, grey and drizzling outside but warm out. Spending the day in no 19 Edo right now.
Stupid auto correct, it’s supposed to be EDP not Edo.
You smell wonderful.
Wearing my first FB blind buy today: Habit Rouge edt. I bought it based on recommendations since I love Shalimar so much and I must say I am not regretting it. Actually wish I’d sprayed one little extra spray.
Not sure what song goes with it. When I first sprayed it, I thought it was a little more barbershop than I’m used to wearing so maybe “Dude Looks Like a Lady”?
Love the song choice! You smell great.
(Oh wait, do I get an enabler pin for the Habit Rouge?)
Yes! Enabler pin for you! I was trying to go back and find out who it was but that’s several weeks back and I’m not that patient. Loving it, so thanks!
Yay! Glad you like it! It was a blind buy for me too. Not that there was a lot of risk involved with a scent descended from Shalimar, mind you.????
HA! Good one.
Beautiful spring day here! Plan to step out for lunch to enjoy it a bit.
SOTD: Moonlight Patchouli, from swap meet.. pretty rose/patch scent. Soft and not too heavy on the patch.
I’m wearing Shalimar Parfum Initial for the first time…a sample from the lovely and generous Elizabeth…
I quite like it. I see parallels w/ the original of course and Shalimar Light, which I have and love, too.
Of course it is discontinued and we all know that availability sometimes makes things/people that much more attractive too…
Love this, and so regret not getting a bottle while I could. But I think Dior Homme strikes a similar cord.
They do smell very similar.
You smell so lovely, She-ra. Parfum Initial is a scent that makes me smile when I wear it.
you smell wonderful!
Wearing En Passant for the first time this season. It’s a perfect spring perfume.
That it is. Wish that there are more lilac dominant perfumes.
Started with finishing my sample of Pear, Fir & Coffee oil (nice but not my goldilocks coffee), and dabbed a little Dzing on top. I can face the day on 4 hours sleep, but it’s going to be a little rough. Until this week’s deadlines are over I might get more confused each day!
Hang in there JJ!
I might have some samples for you …
how are you liking your Afteliers?
I’m surprised that I like, almost love, the 2 samples – Vanilla Smoke and Wild Roses. The Ancient Resins elixir is really nice too.
I am in Annabelle by Shelley Kyle, I love the uplifting notes of honeysuckle, pamplemousse, peony, lily-of-the-valley, Italian tuberose and most of all, linden blossom.
This sounds great! I have never heard of this perfumer….(trotting off to check it out..)
Vintage Aliage for me on this warm spring day. I should be listening to 80s music….
I adore EL’s Aliage, you smell terrific!
Wearing Byredo Bal d’Afrique again. So, so good. Lovers of Chanel 19, Sycomore, and floral vetivers should DEFINITELY smell this!
It’s so sunny and cheerful!
I know! And it lasts all day on me. I am quickly exhausting the sample that I received from a super great NST member. I’m not sure how old the sample is and hope that recent juice is as good as this. It’s really great!
I think I have one or two extra samples I could send you. Let me check when I get home. In the meantime, email me at (all one word): s m a a k e s t (ya hoo dot com)
Heure Exquise for me today. Some say this resembles No. 19, and I have to agree. Both are in my top 5.
Edt or edp? Can you compare them, based on your impressions?
I have the HE EDP, and No. 19 EDP. I would say that No. 19 is greener and sharper, and HE is drier and more powdery. I see No 19 in the board room and HE in the bedroom.
Neat poll idea, must think about this. In The Guide, there is perfume that LT compares to Brian Eno’s Music for Airports. Can’t remember which one, though.
I bought the Kindle version of The Guide at one point (in addition to multiple print editions!) hoping to be able to search the book, but the search function did not seem to be enabled and I returned it. If ever a book needed a search function!
My Kindle Search works. I looked it up, it was Cardinal, by Heeley.
To quote LT
“Cardinal is a high-quality, transparently radiant incense fragrance emphasizing the kinship of resins to citrus, very pleasant, quiet, and clean. If, as I do, you love Brian Eno’s Music for Airports and don’t mind hearing a repeated, meditative, pseudorandom musical phrase for hours, this one’s for you.”
Thank you, Jiji!
Thank you, Jiji! I’ll try buying it again, then.
For Luca Turin fan, his kindle book “Folio” is awesome.
That was a really fun read. (As is just about anything he writes.) And I’m with nozknoz – a searchable version of the Guide would be ever so handy! Instead I keep the analog version at my bedside
Agree, I read those online originally, which was cumbersome. Great to have the Kindle version!
Good morning. Well, we made it through to morning. That’s good. The dear man is sick with exhaustion. That’s very bad. I’d like to work at home today, but I have to go to the office. That’s neutral. I’m wearing 31 Rue Cambon. That’s GREAT. I’m singing (that’s a stretch, with my voice) Suzanne, and Dakkie is sitting on the bed looking perplexed. That’s quite cute. I’m dressed in a loose dress with a pleated skirt because I have a sore tummy. That’s sensible. I’m going to do what I need to do and come home to see to my poor man. That’s a plan.
Be well, NST-tites everywhere.
Sounds like Dakkie-cat is coming along. Belated condolences on poor Isabella. Hope you both get some rest.
You smell wonderful. Hope you all feel better soon.
Oh gosh, I hope darling Dakkie is getting better. Has he used his dirt box yet? And best wishes too, for you and your poor husband. Also, belated condolences for poor Isabella. I was afraid to comment before this for some stange reason – jinx, superstition? Who knows? I actually had nightmares involving Dakkie, a cat I, of course do not know, for a couple of nights after your initial post. Anyway, be assured that the thoughts and prayers of this cat loving stranger are with you all.
I’m wearing Penhaligon’s Sartorial today. I had the song “Wait for the Summer” by Yeasayer in mind when I decided on it.
Made my first attempt at cold brewing coffee last night, and the result was reasonably good. Maybe slightly weaker than I think I wanted, but it’s close. Instead of putting the ground coffee directly into the water, I made little pouches with coffee filters so I wouldn’t have to deal with straining it this morning, and I wonder if that
Or, just try brewing longer? I brew mine for a very long time, and use less water than they usually call for, so it turns out like a concentrate.
Starbucks sells a make your own cold brew coffee kit
Today I’m wearing Heeley’s Iris de Nuit.
you smell great!
Lolita Lempicka. Pairing it with Tainted Love interpreted by Marilyn Mason.
You know my brain can’t get the hang of these song-perfume pairings but I love your choice of fragrance.
This one is always satisfying. Love the bottle, too. And I don’think too hard, lol! Dabbed it, thought the bottle is gothic and so is the scent, like a cherry cake from a Tim Buton movie, then ran some eighties dark songs through my head, stopping at this instead. This Marilyn Manson rendition is so powerful, it makes me want to throw a party!
Well for me it’s just not happening, although I must admit that Amouage Gold makes think, in a roundabout way, of Mozart operas.
SOTD is Dame Mate, Heliotrope & Patchouli.
Haven’t figured out what I’m going to do for my song-perfume pairing for Friday. I thing I’m going to have to do a music binge for inspiration. Darn the bad luck. ????
I have no clue either. I do love a good challenge!
All the more so when music is involved!
I’m back from my monthly chiro appointment, feeling much better.
This morning, before appt, my puppygirl was on my lap, huffing my bagel, and I was huffing my wrist – wearing L’Instant de Guerlain Pour Homme Extreme.
This fragrance is so comforting, warm and gently spicy! I love it, and am thinking that Guerlain may be my house of choice.
Many thanks to the lovely ElisaP for the generous sample!
Song matchup: Our House, by CSN&Y.
The Office Perfume Grump snapped and went to the big boss about my perfume – my attempt at compromise, ie discreet spritzing, was angrily rejected. Big boss asked me, as a big favour since there is no perfume policy, for me to refrain from wearing perfume until the shared office is turned into individual offices in a few months. I am quite miserable: perfume was helping me cope with a tough year at work, and it was far from frivolous vanity.
Ol’ Grumpy isn’t in the office today, so I have defiantly put on some Cuir d’Ange from a sample. Ah well, later I will be happily returning to the world of daytime perfume – no way will I accept not wearing perfume in my own office – and OPG will probably find something else to be unhappy about.
You have my sympathies AnnieA. Hopefully if he is that miserable, he will make himself disappear, ie. quit or be asked to leave.
I’ve always wondered where grumpy people get their grump? This guy just seems to want another person to be as miserable as he is. Boo!
Annie, I would encourage you not to dismiss this person as grumpy. It’s obvious from NST comments that even though we all love perfume, we never agree on any one perfume. Often, some love a perfume that others consider a scrubber. Think of a perfume you hate and what it would be like to be trapped with it all day. There’s nothing one can do to avoid scent – you can’t look away or put in ear plugs, for example.
SOTD is Etat Libre d’Orange “Je suis un homme”. Unfortunately aujourd’hui je suis un homme avec un cold in the nez, et je ne peux pas smell anything. ????
Diving into the sample stash to try something else today. SOTD = Miss Dior Cherie EdP. No caramel corn or strawberry in this that I can smell, so this might be a later version.
I tried it when it launched@ Nordstrom and no caramel corn or strawberries for me either.
The Emperor is nude, methinks, Jalapeno!
Une Rose for Neutral Milk Hotel’s Holland 1945. Yesterday I didn’t get to post but I wore Moss Gown for Cat Power’s Naked if I Want To cover.
Nice pairing! I’m always excited to see Neutral Milk Hotel mentioned. I think I’ll blast that album on my drive home.
Busy day at work and my birthday! I keep trying to read all the comments, but I figure I should post before it gets too late. I’m wearing my precious *cue Gollum voice* L’Occitane Neroli. It’s the original version that is now going for ridiculous prices on Ebay. I wish I had purchased a back up bottle when they were going for under $200.
SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP
Busy day and it will not let up. I am still taking Friday and Monday off since I have a few more carryover days from 2016.
Note to the two people who deliberately bumped into me as we were walking in opposite directions, each in our own “lane”. If you feel a twinge in your shoulder as you’re trying to relax at the end of the day, remember not to underestimate fellow walkers; they may be sturdier than appearance may indicate and your plan just backfired.
PSA: Swatch stores will replace your Swatch watch battery for free. You may be subjected to a tiny sales pitch while you wait but you are never obliged to buy anything. They used to only offer this either one month or one week in the summer, now it’s all day everyday. I went to the one at Grand Central but you may want to call ahead to make sure the policy is consistent and that they can do it at the store you will be visiting
I’m glad to hear you get to take your extra days off!
Technically use them by 3/31 or lose them but my boss didn’t say anything when I emailed her with which time off bucket I’m using.
