Tuesday scent of the day 4/11

Posted by Robin on 11 April 2017 191 Comments

Record Player Teapot

Happy International Louie Louie Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in vintage Jean Patou Joy, for a vintage song, Helen Humes singing Bill, originally written by PG Wodehouse.* Tea at the moment is plain old Irish Breakfast, and lots of it.

Reminder: 4/14 will be Playlist Friday — name a favorite song, and wear a perfume that fits the song.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Record Player Full Size Teapot ("Inspired by the iconic Dansette record player from the 1960’s, the retro shape will bring the memories gushing back. A superb contemporary addition to any collection, and a great gift idea for any record fan.Vinyl Rules, OK! W 12” (30cms). Each unique piece comes with a certificate of authenticity and is hand made in the UK with the skill and craftsmanship expected of fine English ceramics.") is £79.99 at Owl Barn Gifts.

*You can hear the Helen Humes version on this YouTube video. It seems to be playing over movie footage, I have no idea what the movie is or why. You can see the original Wodehouse lyrics here.

    What are you looking at?
What do I have that is glamorous, a tad aloof, self assured and a shameless show-off. Tom Fords Black Orchid that’s what!

It doesn’t matter if you’re black or white
    If you’re a boy or a girl
If the music’s pumpin’ it will give you new life
    You’re a superstar
    Yes, that’s what you are
    You know it…

I may have been known to strike a pose or two when I was younger…

      Soul is in the musical
That’s where I feel so beautiful
      Magical
      Life’s a ball
So get up on the dance floor

BobH, you made my day! There was already about a 98% chance my song pick for Friday would be from Madge. I feel like now it’s gonna be even harder to choose something else.????

Standing in front of Saks fifth Avenue , made the journey to New York City, and was staring at you huge bottles of number 19 Poudre that had just got released. In my headphones I was listening to Cat Stevens wild world. SOTD 19 Poudre

Lovely choice. Wild world reminds me of my Dad, who is a big Cat Stevens fan, and used to play Tea for the Tiller man a lot during my childhood, and then I played it a lot in my teens.

SOTD is Histoires de Parfums 1876, aka as Mata Hari. I’m rubbish at dancing so in a way this perfume should not suit me. It’s a retro spicy rose however, and I find it very wearable and not all that exotic.

SOTD Tom Ford Vert de Fleur. I like this one very much; it manages to be both crisp and plush even though it’s not particularly complex. It fits the grey spring day quite well. Hopefully my decant will last a while!

Testing a sample from Nicolaï: Kiss Me Intense. Don’t like it. I’ve decided that vanilla + almond is too sweet and too gourmand a combo for my taste.
(However, it’s still much better than those horrible annoying cloying invading omnipresent sugary caramel notes like La Vie est belle, La Petite Robe…)

That’s where my GM came from too! Laura is a very kind and generous perfume fairy. :) All my grey seems to be at the cleaners, so my outfit ended up being black and white – black-and-white checked pencil skirt, black shell, black and white lace-patterned cardigan, black opaques, black suede heels. But I feel unfinished because I totally forgot to put earrings on. Naked ear lobes! (There must be a Weird Al Yankovich song for that.)

I absolutely love it. Longevity is excellent, it lasts all day and well into the evening on me, on my clothes for a couple of days! I am tempted by the set too. Unfortunately, adding on shipping to me in Australia makes it a bit less of a bargain, but I may just succumb anyway.

Have you ever put on a perfume and then forgotten what you were wearing? This morning at around 5 AM I sort-of woke up, got dressed, walked to the train station then fell asleep on the train. Over an hour later when I finally got to the office and took off my jacket this soft beautiful smell wafted up to my nose but I just couldn’t remember what It was. It finally came to me – SSS voile de violet.

I’m trying By Kilian’s Flower of Immortality. The peach is totally causing a scent flashback to my early grad school days and my roommate from 1999-2000 who used some kind of peach body spray (and then covered it with Happy – it’s amazing that we didn’t suffocate!). I was listening to Everclear’s Sparkle and Fade album a lot in those days, so my song choice is “Summerland”.

Smelled in the wild: Pink Sugar at the symphony (!) Mozart’s Requiem was the piece. It was a little incongruous but the brief waft was unforgettable.

Take off your dress–yes, yes, yes

Now if I can feel the sun
    In my eyes
And the rain on my face
    Why can’t I
    Feel love

I can really love, really love
Really love, Really love, Really love
Love love love love love love love love. . . .

    Sing me another love song
    But this time
    With a little dedication
    Sing it, sing it
You know that’s what I like
    Once more with feeling
Give me love, give me love, give me love
    Love…

Wearing Dzing! for my birthday. My Tuesdays are very long, but Dzing! and the anticipation of my birthday bottle (not to mention new shoes arriving later today!) will help me cope. Also, I have chocolate chip cookies with my lunch – always nice.

I seem to also be getting whiffs of SSS Rose Volupté, which I wore yesterday. Or Dzing!’s developed a new fruity rose note since I last wore it. I like the combination, anyway.

It’s a warm day here, so 4711 cologne for me. I wore all kinds of citrus when I was in college, so my soundtrack for today is one of my favorite late 90s roadtrip mixtapes. It’s a mix of REM, Indigo Girls, Dave Matthews, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucinda Williams, Barenaked Ladies, Gin Blossoms …you get the picture

Temperatures have dropped. This spring morning started cold, I am wearing Fahrenheit, Dior.

I did not choose it with a perfect song match in mind. But while I was wearing it, the delicate transparent violet and sturdy leather combo remind me of the antithesis in shoegaze music (one of the genres I grew up with and love). Wall of noise of blurring guitars, distorted and all, AND angelic ethereal singing = Slowdive. https://youtu.be/2INLBsRYVBs

For me this scent that walks the small line between natural and artificial, blunt and sensitive, earth and sky, between this world and an alien world :)

Wearing my first FB blind buy today: Habit Rouge edt. I bought it based on recommendations since I love Shalimar so much and I must say I am not regretting it. Actually wish I’d sprayed one little extra spray.

Not sure what song goes with it. When I first sprayed it, I thought it was a little more barbershop than I’m used to wearing so maybe “Dude Looks Like a Lady”? :P

Neat poll idea, must think about this. In The Guide, there is perfume that LT compares to Brian Eno’s Music for Airports. Can’t remember which one, though.

I bought the Kindle version of The Guide at one point (in addition to multiple print editions!) hoping to be able to search the book, but the search function did not seem to be enabled and I returned it. If ever a book needed a search function!

My Kindle Search works. :) I looked it up, it was Cardinal, by Heeley.

      To quote LT

“Cardinal is a high-quality, transparently radiant incense fragrance emphasizing the kinship of resins to citrus, very pleasant, quiet, and clean. If, as I do, you love Brian Eno’s Music for Airports and don’t mind hearing a repeated, meditative, pseudorandom musical phrase for hours, this one’s for you.”

Good morning. Well, we made it through to morning. That’s good. The dear man is sick with exhaustion. That’s very bad. I’d like to work at home today, but I have to go to the office. That’s neutral. I’m wearing 31 Rue Cambon. That’s GREAT. I’m singing (that’s a stretch, with my voice) Suzanne, and Dakkie is sitting on the bed looking perplexed. That’s quite cute. I’m dressed in a loose dress with a pleated skirt because I have a sore tummy. That’s sensible. I’m going to do what I need to do and come home to see to my poor man. That’s a plan.

I was afraid to comment before this for some stange reason – jinx, superstition? Who knows? I actually had nightmares involving Dakkie, a cat I, of course do not know, for a couple of nights after your initial post. Anyway, be assured that the thoughts and prayers of this cat loving stranger are with you all.

I’m wearing Penhaligon’s Sartorial today. I had the song “Wait for the Summer” by Yeasayer in mind when I decided on it.

Made my first attempt at cold brewing coffee last night, and the result was reasonably good. Maybe slightly weaker than I think I wanted, but it’s close. Instead of putting the ground coffee directly into the water, I made little pouches with coffee filters so I wouldn’t have to deal with straining it this morning, and I wonder if that

This one is always satisfying. Love the bottle, too. And I don’think too hard, lol! Dabbed it, thought the bottle is gothic and so is the scent, like a cherry cake from a Tim Buton movie, then ran some eighties dark songs through my head, stopping at this instead. This Marilyn Manson rendition is so powerful, it makes me want to throw a party!

The Office Perfume Grump snapped and went to the big boss about my perfume – my attempt at compromise, ie discreet spritzing, was angrily rejected. Big boss asked me, as a big favour since there is no perfume policy, for me to refrain from wearing perfume until the shared office is turned into individual offices in a few months. I am quite miserable: perfume was helping me cope with a tough year at work, and it was far from frivolous vanity.

Ol’ Grumpy isn’t in the office today, so I have defiantly put on some Cuir d’Ange from a sample. Ah well, later I will be happily returning to the world of daytime perfume – no way will I accept not wearing perfume in my own office – and OPG will probably find something else to be unhappy about.

Annie, I would encourage you not to dismiss this person as grumpy. It’s obvious from NST comments that even though we all love perfume, we never agree on any one perfume. Often, some love a perfume that others consider a scrubber. Think of a perfume you hate and what it would be like to be trapped with it all day. There’s nothing one can do to avoid scent – you can’t look away or put in ear plugs, for example.

Une Rose for Neutral Milk Hotel’s Holland 1945. Yesterday I didn’t get to post but I wore Moss Gown for Cat Power’s Naked if I Want To cover.

Nice pairing! I’m always excited to see Neutral Milk Hotel mentioned. I think I’ll blast that album on my drive home.

Busy day at work and my birthday! I keep trying to read all the comments, but I figure I should post before it gets too late. I’m wearing my precious *cue Gollum voice* L’Occitane Neroli. It’s the original version that is now going for ridiculous prices on Ebay. I wish I had purchased a back up bottle when they were going for under $200.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

Busy day and it will not let up. I am still taking Friday and Monday off since I have a few more carryover days from 2016.

Note to the two people who deliberately bumped into me as we were walking in opposite directions, each in our own “lane”. If you feel a twinge in your shoulder as you’re trying to relax at the end of the day, remember not to underestimate fellow walkers; they may be sturdier than appearance may indicate and your plan just backfired.

PSA: Swatch stores will replace your Swatch watch battery for free. You may be subjected to a tiny sales pitch while you wait but you are never obliged to buy anything. They used to only offer this either one month or one week in the summer, now it’s all day everyday. I went to the one at Grand Central but you may want to call ahead to make sure the policy is consistent and that they can do it at the store you will be visiting

Technically use them by 3/31 or lose them but my boss didn’t say anything when I emailed her with which time off bucket I’m using.
