Lazy weekend poll ~ open thread, early April 2017

daffodils

Our same-old-thing open thread poll. Talk about anything you like — the fragrance you’re wearing today, your favorite spring floral, whatever.

Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Beautiful day in the Big Apple. Sunny, bright, but very windy. I am working today. Wearing Ostara, one of my favorites spring floral. Such a cheerful and happy scent. Have a great day everyone!

Did you see the picture for today’s thread before you choose your perfume, or did Robin just mentally willed you into wearing such a fitting scent? :)

Saturday! The sun is out, the sky is blue and the birds are singing. Le Labo Bergamote 22 to match this beautiful weather. I may need a fb of this one.
My lazy Saturday plans include getting my girls packed to head to Florida for a week with the grands and letting my husband grill me dinner. ????

I’m afraid to wear mine again because the last time I wore this, it reeked of cumin. Not a good Reeking Havoc a la Holly, but bad reek.

SOTD = Jo Malone Tobacco & Mandarin

Loving its soft citrus and hints of tobacco. I only wore 2 spritzes because I will be going to the grocery with scent-phobe mom. It’s probably not appropriate for this cold windy day but what the heck!

I’m planning on going to the launch of Superstitious at the FM Greenwich Avenue boutique. The good news: I was promoted from riff-raff to not riff-raff so I don’t need to shell out the entrance fee (credit for future purchase…heh, I’ve spent enough there). The bad news: I was hoping to just spend the day in NY but I have an event in our NJ office; not bad…I just need to plot out my commute back to the City.

Most swap and post Splitmeet split packages (Moonlight Patchouli) will be mailed out this weekend.

Now I just need to pick a fruity fragrance to include in one of the swap packages. What’s your favorite fruity fragrance?

    Have a great weekend all!

Oh, to be promoted to Not RIff Raff- how cool indeed! :-)

Fruity fragrances usually for me is either some combo of citrus OR roses+berries. Lately, I have discovered fig notes, which I truly like and will be wearing for the rest of this chilly spring!

      Philosykos- Lovely!
Eau de Pamplemousse et Rose- damn, that’s good
Infusion d’Iris absolue- lovely citrus+iris perfume, wish I had discovered long before hand!

I think rhubarb is technically a vegetable, but you eat it like a fruit, ie stewed, with cream or custard, yum, I fancy some homemade rhubarb crumble with custard or ice cream now!

Just don’t fall for the psychological pressure to maintain your “status”: buy only if you see (well, smell) something you like ;)

Fruity… Pulp immediately jumps to mind. Une Rose Vermeille. Enchanted Forest.

Hi hajursuuri, my favourite spring/summer, (and Autumn come to that) fruity perfumes, are: Journey woman (apricots), vintage Yvres edt, diorella, parfum de Therese, and for black current, L’ombre dans L’eau edp. I also loved Jardin sur Le to it, when I sampled it last summer.

What a beautiful spring day. Blue sky, sun, white, pink blossoms and yellow and white narcisses everywhere!

But I was not in the mood for a light spring scent. I needed something solid and a bit sturdy. Wearing gorgeous Arso (by ProFumum Roma).

Haha, yes it’s quite a particular name. In Italian it means ‘burnt’, but you probably already knew that! :)

A lot of scents from ProFumum Roma have short and memorable names. I tried 4 so far, but I also think they make interesting perfumes, a bit blunt (I need blunt once in a while), but of good quality.
Now thats a brand that should offer a nice sample coffret. I’d buy it in a heartbeat…if reasonably priced of course ;)

Superstitious review, courtesy of Mother Nature:
Walked around my property assessing the hydrangeas (I didn’t kill them despite massive pruning, the curled leaves are emerging) , the dogwood has its tiny white blossoms and will be symmetrical, manually sawing the stragglers away.
Two! Huge! Bumblebees! would not leave me alone.
    LOL
Zooming and swooping, I’m happy to see their presence.
Vetiver and skanky jasmine today, I have some errands to run, my waiting public will weigh in then. LOL. ;)

Envious of your dogwood. There was a small dogwood tree in our back yard when we bought our house, but it was sickly and almost never bloomed. Got worse and worse over the next couple of years and I finally had to put it out of its misery. I suspect it just stays too wet in our yard. I’ve switched to Japanese maples and they’re doing quite well … but no flowers.

Chilly and very windy here, but not overcast as it has been for the past few days. Am glad I’m skipping the boys’ track meet to go to my cousin’s baby shower… she’s 38, and it’s her first. We’re all so excited.

Then community chorus concert this evening and tomorrow afternoon. This is a 50s/60s retro pop music concert designed to make some money for the group and provide a community entertainment event. Bleah. I mean, look, I like the Beatles as well as anybody (and maybe more than most), but if I want to hear “Blue Moon” and “Sixteen Tons,” I’ll just put ’em on Spotify like a *normal* person. I kinda had enough of the show choir stuff in high school. :|

    Anyway.

I want those daffodils! Wearing Ostara and a dab of Dame Soliflore Narcissus.

Yes, but I’ve also been thinking there’s something sad about people just streaming stuff rather than producing music together themselves. When you reflect that for hundreds of millennia, humans only had the entertainment they produced themselves, and how different that experience was qualitatively, and how hard it becomes to appreciate anything that you can do yourself, in comparison to the digitally altered, one in a million talent perfection available at the touch of a button, I think we are losing something at the core of our being.

Not that I’d want to go to that concert, either, but I keep feeling I need to do more, e.g., get back to drawing rather than just looking at stuff on the internet or in museums. So, at least if you have to go you can feel you’re part of something fundamentally human, Mals. :)

This is so true, but I do think, believe it or not, that YouTube encourages more kids to learn instruments, because they see what other “amateurs” are doing / learning / creating.

Not really related, but there is nothing that makes me happier than hearing strains of my son playing the penny whistle from the other room when I go to bed. If I’m lucky he’s working on Loch Lomond, but I have to be careful not to ask him to play it or I won’t hear it, ha. Was thinking that when he goes away to college I will have to find some kid playing it on YouTube, and program the computer to play it from his room every night.

I love Loch Lomond. My son’s junior high men’s choir did a very nice rendition of it. He said it was his favorite song of the ones they were doing, which warmed my heart. Maybe he has a little bit of old soul in him somewhere.

Combined Assam of India and Black Flower Mexican Vanilla in the tiniest amount for yoga this morning. I really like this pairing.

If Oakland is reading here is another mystery show I recommend to you-

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosemary_%26_Thyme

The main characters are intelligent and witty and the landscapes and scenery are too die for (no pun intended!)

Also recommending Phyrne Fisher Mysteries….she is also intelligent and gorgeous and I love the period pieces that she wears.

I am also currently enjoying Father Brown mystery series for the witty characters and bucolic country life portrayed.

and thanks to you and Robin for your recommendation yesterday, I added it to my list on netflix.

I think I missed the plot of the couple of episodes I caught just staring at his beautiful face! :) But now that it’s on Netflix…

Murdoch Mysteries (turn of the century Toronto)

Republic of Doyle (set in St John’s, Newfoundland)

          Longmire (set in Wyoming)

          Death in Paradise (Caribbean)

          Hinterland (Wales)

Not a mystery but I really enjoyed it “Halt and Catch Fire”….drama based on the history of the beginnings of personal computers

          Engrenage /Spiral (French)

          the Glades (Florida)

          Crossing Jordan

Loved Hinterland, can’t wait for the next one. It is very dark, though. And will add Foyle’s War, which is more on the cozy side, and Vera, which is somewhere in between.

Another good French one — Witnesses

            And in Swedish, Sandhamn Murders

Speaking of mysteries, if anyone is looking for a new mystery series to read, I happened across the Tannie Maria series set in South Africa. Tannie Maria is a middle-aged widow who writes the advice column for her local newspaper, and since she loves food, her advice always seems to involve at least one good recipe (and they are, forgive the pun, to die for). The first one is called “Recipes for Love and Murder.” The setting and characters make a nice change from the English county house mysteries I’ve been reading.

Happy weekend everyone! I’m off to my sister’s to celebrate my niece’s birthday, and the end of my husband’s radiation therapy. Last year I took my niece to Barney’s for a make-over, and her first real bottles of perfume – FM Eau de Magnolia and Tiziana Terenzi Al Contrary. Can’t really top that so I’m not even going try. Yesterday my husband ate his first solid food in over a month – a chocolate chip cookie. He said it was painful, but so worth it.

A sunny and warm day in the Mudlands, and so TOMK and I went a-strolling down to the Cadbury factory shop to buy buckets of chocolate for my German co-workers. Then I went off to get in the wine stocks (my self-imposed ban ends at Easter) and a much-needed haircut.

SOTM was Chanel “Sycomore”, inspired by Robin’s vetiver post.
Notes are vetiver, sandalwood, aldehydes, tobacco, violet, cypress, juniper, pink pepper and spicy notes. This wore off in the course of all that walking.

SOTD is Jesus del Pozo “Arabian Nights”

    Top: rose and thyme;
    Mid: cedar, sandalwood, guaiac wood, patchouli, vetiver and saffron;
Base: oud, labdanum, amber and musk.

I like it – it’s the rose-oud for me. Rose-ouds are ten-a-penny (in ubiquity if sadly not in actual price) so don’t rush to try this one if you’ve already found yours.

    1) Discovered ants! Silly things! So got plenty of colony killer bait traps and set them. Drink deeply, my friends, drink deeply.

    2) The ground is still too cold to plant summer blooming bulbs, so am gonna trim the boxwood out front and the rhodendrons as well.

    3) Picking up my console table from the store, and will take down the tacky blinds from my patio door and install drapery rod instead with beautiful drapes. Am testing pink paint in the bedroom.

    4) Am in Anatomy of a Fragrance Fig, which is a greener, fresher version of Philosykos.

Yes! I sprayed it on yesterday in a store and I liked it a lot. Mint and other herbs, something rose-like and lots of green and hints of soil. Especially the first hour I kept sniffing my wrist. I sure will try it again!

I wish it had a little more oomph though, i missed a hint of skank or spice, or a bit of woods to give it more base.
But the upside of the cleanliness, it’s probably suitable for office spaces/work meetings.

Interesting that Chandler Burr chose to create a mint fragance. I remember he raved about Heeley Mint Fraiche in his old NYT column. Other mint fragrances have not worked for me, but I’m curious to try this.

When the mint in a scent reminds me of breath mints, toothpaste or sweet cocktails, it a big NO!
But like Sunnlitt said, this mint is of the garden/backyard variety and it did not bother me.

I used to love a minty smelling plant that grew in shaded grass when I was kid, before people started using herbicides to get nothing but grass. That kind of thing would be great!

It is gorgeous out today! Went out on an errand run in CdG Ouarzazate-not very springy but not heavy either and not very long lasting, though I mind a short half-life much less these days.
I sprayed down a gnat fest near the drain by the back door with a homemade solution of neem, clove, oregano, and rosemary oils and that’s all I can smell right now. Neem oil smells like garlic, so if it doesn’t inhibit the gnats, at least no vampires!

      Did it work?

We get weird gnat infestations in the early fall, every year. Have never found anything that works. Haven’t even really figured out where they’re coming from.

      • Elisa P says:

It did reduce it from swarm status to just some gnats flying around. They seem to spawn overnight! Crazy. I made the solution last year when we had a severe black aphid infestation of a shrub in the yard. I did have to use commercial pesticides first but then kept them at bay with the solution.
The gnats seem to appear where the water and leaves collect. Maybe they lay eggs in there.

Wearing the gone but not forgotten Gucci Envy – one of the perfumes that smell like spring to me. I regret only buying a 50ml bottle when it was still available and it seems to a weird sediment has built up in the spray bottle I own, as I’ve discovered lately, but the scent itself is fine. Oh Gucci, you should have kept this one in production instead of making all the bland stuff you’re marketing now!

Hello fragrant friends…..so late to the party that I missed posting my ultimate jasmine yesterday. I wore a very old Occitaine jasmine (maybe 20+ years?). Just a straight up jasmine that still sings.

Today I ran out to the library in La Fille de Berlin and had to write it down for the librarian who wanted some…..happy to share perfume goodness. Still cold and windy, but sunny here….spring is coming. I have faith! Enjoy the weekend everybody, smell good and have fun.

I’m wearing a touch of Jacomo Eau Cendree. It’s not exactly right, being as it is slightly masculine for my comfort. (I’d rather smell it on a guy.) But it’s exceptional and the weather will soon be too hot to even think about it.

I’m actually feeling crabby about the approach of summer and having to wear light scents or none at all for months at a time. (It gets appallingly hot and humid in the DC area.)

Totally on the Cool Weather Team. Florida is literally the pits 9 months of the year and the humidity makes me an absolute slug. Saps my energy, turns my mood sour, and in general makes me feel at odds with the world. The last 2-3 “summers” have been incredibly brutal. I’m heading to higher altitudes this summer if possible.

Last night was my son’s prom. He and his girlfriend looked so beautiful. We took some really wonderful pictures at the park downtown across from the civic center where the prom was being held. Feeling a bit melancholy. Happy to see him grow up but makes me a little sad as well though…

Good morning, all. Thank you so much for your kind thoughts and words about poor Dakkie, a Dak who is recovering this morning from a crisis brought on, according to the vet, by a broken heart. We’re doing our best for him, but I have to say, I wonder if we should be. We love him very much, but he’s pining for Isabella and we can’t console him. He lost nearly 2 kilograms in the last 2 weeks — a quarter of his weight– and the crisis was dreadful to see. The vet’s blunderbuss treatment revived him, but long term damage to kidneys and bowel are strong possibilities. We wait now, to see what happens.

In the meantime, work is still there, and though I haven’t slept for 2 days, I have to find some energy because I teach heavily today. I’m wearing prettiness this morning, Traversee du Bosphore, one of my favourites. Perfect for hope, for warmth on a miserable day, for being quietly present. It’s cheering me up as much as a perfume can.

      Be well, everyone.

I’m wearing Amouage Opus VIII today. I found it yesterday during a sample search and realized it also has jasmine. It’s a tad screechy at the start but settles down into something quite pleasant with heavy white florals. This morning I attended the Bat Mitzvah of a close friend who was in the service with seven other adults. It was very beautiful and interesting to me (a non-Jew). I really had to admire her for tackling so much along with her many other volunteer activities (she is retired).

Hello, hello, hello…. just got back from a perfume testing extravaganza with Pixel at Tigerlily in the Mission. I have about 20 different perfumes on, overwhelmed a bit by a tarry, peaty, “pure” attar oil concoction by Andy Tauer. Too broke just now to buy anything, but temptations included: North by Mikmoi, Miyako by Auphorie, For Walks by Blocki, Zelda by En Voyage, Ceremony by Mirus, and Bande À Part by Jolie Laide. . . . And there was one that has not yet been released by Olympic Orchids and I am spacing on the name but I think it had a horse in the imagery–it was a greenish scent, with tomato leaf and possibly hints of ginger? that was just “wow!”

Andy Tauer was there, as was Ellen Covey, Shelley Waddington, and others.

    Have I made you jealous?

Hehe, y’all sure made me most popular with Antonia and her staff. Might have had something to do with us walking into her shop and saying “Hi, you have six bottles on hold for me, and I want two more, and then I’m going to look around your shop for a while”… :)

What fun!!! You deserved such a day :)

and like hajusuuri I am curious about the one with the tomato leaf note. If you can think of the name, do let us know.

Also, did you get to meet Jeffrey Dame? I hear he is a sweatheart IRL (I have only spoken to him on the phone).

Oh crap! NOT ‘sweatheart’ but rather “sweetheart”…sheesh!

Sweatheart would be disgusting :-). (And is sweatheart a real word? Where’s spellcheck when you needed it?)

He wasn’t there when we were there, but I am wearing a sample of his LOTV soliflore just now–with Diorissimo edt on the other wrist for comparison :-)

All of the perfumers were very friendly and accessible–but a little shy. I am not surprised. It must get exhausting putting on the fume dog and pony show over and over again…

I am annoyed that I cannot recall the Olympic Orchids scent name. The graphic was so distinct– a horse… in green on black… grrr…. maybe Pixel can recall.

Ya know, somehow i missed Olympic Orchids entirely. Maybe you were sniffing those while I was off with Antonia, or pestering the L’Aromatica gal. It was kindof a madhouse in there :) in a good way.

I tried looking around the internet myself yesterday to see if I could find it but no luck. The L’Aromatica line looks interesting as does the Jolie-Laide which I think is all natural if I am not mistaken. Tigerlily sure has some nice niche and artisanal lines :)
Let us know what you think of the Dame LOTV…you can’t beat the price of a full bottle.

I heartily endorse Zelda. It’s one of my Top 10. One spritz lasts forever and a day. If you like perfumes that morphe over time, you should dedicate a whole day to just Zelda, sit back and enjoy the show.

Spending a few off days camping and just got back from what was supposed to be a five mile hike but ended up being what felt like a thousand and one miles because I somehow managed to lose the trail. Just got back to camp and everyone is packing up to leave and I am ELATED! I’m here till Tuesday and will thoroughly enjoy everyone’s abcense.

Cold early this morning when we started and everything smelled of the mouldering damp of decaying leaves and bark. The sun made a grand entrance and it has warmed up considerably. Now everything smells of the damp, ripe fecundity of spring. Some fresh leaves and the vibrant green of unfurled ferns along the trail as well as a stray wildflower or two. Saw what I think was a goldfinch glowing in the sun on a downed tree briefly before it flitted off to continue its bird life. T-Rex was a trail champ and it was entertaining watching her speckled haunches coil with bunched muscles ready for take take off.

The rest of the plans for today: nice long hot shower and heavy usage of FM VE, bears be damned. I need a perfume fix. Hope everyone has a fabulous weekend!

Did I already post this? Or was it the same organization, or just something similar, in another publication? But we have different readers at different times so I guess a little duplication wouldn’t hurt:

    http://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/the-quest-better-describe-scent-old-books-180962819/?utm_source=smithsoniantopic&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=20170409-Weekender&spMailingID=28572096&spUserID=NzQwNDU2OTE1OTcS1&spJobID=1021143400&spReportId=MTAyMTE0MzQwMAS2

I’m testing Krizia Moods Uomo and trying to decide if I like it. The fact that it seems like more of a fall scent is not helping.

I did enjoy wearing my fav SMN Melograno earlier today, which I like better in spring, summer, and early fall than cold weather. I have a secret fear that someday I will put it on and find I no longer love it, but so far, I still do.

Also, I enjoyed opening the envelope of recently arrived Aroma M samples and huffing the combined aroma. That will be a good series to test this spring, I think.

A rare, properly hot and sunny day today. SOTD is Caron “Yatagan”.

    Top: lavender, galbanum, pine, basil, watercress and mint;
    Mid: artemisia, oak, oakmoss and patchouli;
Base: musk, castoreum, woody notes and incense.

To be honest, although I like Yatagan well enough, I don’t get anything resembling those notes from it. Especially not now in the evening, as I have sprayed one wrist with TF “Tobacco Vanille” and the other with… dangit, don’t remember. Some other TF thing, I think “Rive d’Ambre”? Anyway, I dosed myself in Duty Free and am quite happy that all I smell now is TV, which is on my shortlist after I finished a decant earlier in the year.

I think of Yatagan as a wearable pine… It shouldn’t work, but it does.

Knowing Caron, Yatagan may smell very different now from what it did when the lists of notes were drawn up. ;)

I had a fun weekend getaway on a nearby small-town island. It was charming and relaxing, and I had great fun. Yesterday I wore Oriza L. Legrand Villa Lympia to complement the ferry ride over on a chilly day. Today I have been in Sweet Anthem Walden, but I’ll put aomething else on this evening. I can’t believe it’s almost Monday again.

The first bright spot in my weekend was the visit the I made yesterday to the National Arboretum. The day was gorgeous, the dogs and their people were all friendly, and the most beautiful thing I saw and smelled was an apple tree in full bloom.

The second bright spot is the Gris Montaigne I’m wearing now, courtesy of the lovely and generous Laura!

Hoping this week will be a good one for all of us!
