Wednesday scent of the day 4/5

Posted by Robin on 5 April 2017 243 Comments

jasmine blossoms in bowl

Happy Hump Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm doing a second day of big jasmine with Vilhelm Don't Tell Jasmine.

Reminder: on 4/7, wear a fragrance with jasmine, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

A teeny spray of Songes for me today. After work I’ll spray again more liberally!

OOOh! I got a sample of that in my recent Arielle Shoshanna Scented Luxuries Atelier soap purchases (which found happy homes in Easter baskets)…that one is lovely…really lovely….do you like it?

I’m a big fan of Aedes and Cierge de Lune in particular. I got me a bottle last year.

Indolic JASMINE! !!, vetiver, animalic musk, dense aldehydes. Large sillage.
Day 2 wearing Superstitious Dominique Ropion/Alber Elbaz/Frederic Malle.
Classic French perfumery, a butch jasmine parfum.
Will be curious how this plays out, reviews and sales wise.
The bunny rabbits are chasing each other in the backyard, little bunnies arriving soon!
    ;)
    Triple strength coffee.
    Life is beautiful.
    Carpe Diem. Peace.

      Will do.
I was out and about last night, and I could smell an amazing sillage.
I saw a few friends sniffing the air, but no compliments. I tend to pontificate on a thousand different tangents if someone asks about my scent.
      LOL.
Sandalwood and myrrh can be discerned if I search for them in the far drydown.
Rose is listed on the box – I get ZERO rose on my skin.
There may be more than one variety of jasmine being used.
      I like this a lot.
      Cheers! !

Perfect description! Here’s how it played out: the SA sprayed it on cards for me and another woman. I smelled it and then sprayed it on my skin for the full effect. The other woman recoiled in terror and just asked for her signature Musc Ravageur, lol.
I’m not sure I’d be comfortable wearing it. At least not to work.

It is very indolic and animalic, on my skin.
        No sweetness at all.
It the most interesting scent I’ve experienced in quite some time.
        Challenging.
        Probably not a work scent.
Unless you’re the boss, and not looking for validation.

Unsweet peach/apricot skin stood out for me. I suspect a dose of cumin in there as well. I agree about it being one of the more interesting and challenging new fragrances out there so yay for not selling out to mass market aporoval! I think it’ll be a love it or hate one.

Peach/apricot, cumin… This sounds like something I’ll hate – but I look forward to trying it anyway :)

          • Bear says:
            5 April 2017 at 1:33 pm

The cumin reads/smells as animalic musk, on my skin and now I see a connection to Femme Rochas. The peach/apricot eludes me.
            Very interesting, Elisa P !!!

I also thought of Femme, modern butch version. And Une Fleur de Cassie-more in that animalic French style than in smell.

Oooooooh, your SOTD sounds very intriguing. Might have to get a sample, since I have yet to find a jasmine that is “too indolic” for me. Then again, I was lucky enough to sniff grapefruit blossoms at Longwood Gardens last year. WOW. I did not care a bit about the odd looks I was getting.

    Surf, surf, surf your samples,
    Lest they become a tsunami,
    Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily,
Life is but a sample spree.

    Reeking havoc Day 16 woot!
Does Bal a Versailles have jasmine? Yep! Is it a jasmine perfume? Nope! Sampling vintage edt, edc and parfum. Did I plan this? Of course not! Found ’em together in the same lovely organza bag we all are familiar with. Got a boatload of those, too! Added Dilettante cuz I cannot accept that this isn’t perfect for me…it just never achieves the orange blossom lift I insist it should have. Oh well, life on life’s terms. Happy Hump Day y’all!

Ditto, I like it too. . Mid afternoon – perfect scent for re-focusing.
I Tried it beside poison girl. There are similarities between the two but PG has big blousy milky musk powering through it, and shouts, make way! coming on through!
MG is stronger in the lavender, but shares the sweetness with PG. Doesn’t overpower but settles nicely.
It takes PG one hour of dry down to get to where MG starts.
I am the proud owner of two ‘ minority scents ‘ . Always loved the underdog.

JOTD Voluspa Amaranth and Jasmine Room and Body Mist. It’s a fresh, bright, slightly green and citrusy jasmine and pretty good for a cheapie ($19 for 100ml). This could easily be from Annick Goutal IMO. I have to say that some of their scents are more interesting and well done than some of the pricey niche stuff I’ve smelled recently and they have a nice range. Just sayin.

No 5 L’Eau lasts longer on me than No 5 EDP does.

I find that it is no powerhouse by any means. If someone else around me is wearing something strong, their scent takes over.

Sometimes, I can still smell it in my hair the next morning. I love when that happens with a perfume I love.

What a great idea for a ‘day’.
Hey, the karetu grass in sweet almond oil is really cranking up. The smell is far less marzipan than the stalks of drying grass. Far more mown grass or hay. Which makes me wonder what would happen if I just put ordinary grass from a paddock in oil? It might just make a beautiful hay body oil.
The colour has gone from pale oil to golden.
Thanks for your help with this.
Will wear my Dame black flower mexican vanilla in your honour today!

Wearing Alter, by Sammarco (from a sample)
Its a funky, syrupy jasmine, with mimosa. A bit honey like.

I have almost emptied my sample. It does not last very long and its slightly too sweet for my taste. But its worth a try!
Sammarco is an interesting brand – dont know why it gets so many dislikes on fragrantica
(I like their Vitrum better by the way, thats a gorgeous smoky vetiver and I might need a bottle of it one day).

OH AND I FORGOT! I got a sample of the new Joyeuse Tubereuse. It’s a greener Terracotta. Not up to the standard of the art of materials line or the other most recent release of Neroli Outrenoir, IMO. Also, definitely not worth it for the price. And the thing is, the green note fades within a few minutes, and then it’s basically just Terracotta or another beachy Tuberose. Not a must-have in my book..

I am boycotting that whole line because they changed the packaging and from what I understand , you can’t remove the bulb atomizer.

YEAH–so…the new one is a normal spray atomizer. no bulb! hooray! but not removable. (which, I’ll be honest, I like being able to remove the atomizer on the Guerlain bottles to make decants!) I asked my Guerlain perfume guy and he said the plan is to switch all bottles in the line to the permanent /non twist-off atomizer like the new Tuberose, but not anytime in the near future…which is so STUPID–because they already changed the bottle for the tuberose…and everyone has problems with the new bulbs and they break and they’re awful! but anyway, yeah, until they change the bottle for NO, I refuse to purchase it.

I’m wearing TDC Jasmin de Nuit this morning and pondering Friday’s pick. Do I go with my most jasminey jasmine? (Montale Jasmin Full, massive projection and sillage with the tiniest spritz) or my most-loved jasmine, Sarrasins? Or something else? Songes? Rodin? A La Nuit? Tunisian Jasmine? Possibly I have too many jasmines.

Supposedly getting on board the Jasmine train with SOTD “Artemisia” from Penhaligon’s.

    Top: nectarine and green notes;
    Mid: green apple, lily-of-the-valley, jasmine, tea, violet and vanilla;
Base: oakmoss, sandalwood, musk and amber.

Bleurg. This one would disgrace a toilet cleanser. I will re-spray this evening just in case I was having a weird temporary reaction in the morning. (But, you know, Penhaligons ‘have form’ and I am very rarely positively impressed by their meagre efforts).

Greetings NSTers! I’m wafting just a bit of Tauer’s Amber Flush Body Oil, which is not on my body, but rather in my hair, which works quite nicely thank you very much! Beautiful photo! Yellow is such an uplifting color. It seems to have the same effect on me as puppies and kittens- unbounded happiness????

Stocking up food wise for an upcoming sojourn to the woods with T-Rex. Also doing research regarding effective bear deterrents. Perfume, sadly, is not on the list. In an interesting twist, perfume of any kind, even in shampoo or deodorant, seems to attract bears, according to on-line experts. Not what I’m going for. T-Rex would make a tasty snack for them, so no perfume for her OR me. We are disappearing into Uwharrie NF for 4 days and although I very much love the fact that I am sharing bear habitat, I have no desire to meet one up close and personal. Also, I was successful in booking a 4 night stay and the ferry ride to Ocracoke island in May, no fear of bears there, but alas, it seems mosquitoes also love perfume.

Maybe a good thing I left the bulk of my collection at home.

Happy hump day, you all smell fab. I was just reading the Donatella Confessions, and you people are doing a bang up job promoting great smelling stuff. I had to squash a lemming or two ????

Fanastic day yesterday. I have a friend who does science stories for national radio and she was in town doing research at the geology department. She has been following my scent mapping journey and when we met for lunch she handed me a piece of New Zealand amber , probably from a variety of monkey puzzle tree that grew here when the climate was much much warmer.
She Said, ‘flake off a bit and scratch the surface with your finger nail, and sniff’
I did what she said and there was a very rich, dense incense note but like a new forest, too.
She watched me and then said,’ you realise that what you’re smelling is 20 million years old?’
    Twenty MILLION years old!!! Wow!

Probably from a conifer. An ancestor of the NZ kauri , a distant relative of monkey puzzle trees. The amber is fossilized and found in seams of coal.

We were sent home early due to severe weather, so I am unexpectedly enjoying a relaxed afternoon drinking tea and reading. I started the day in Jeux de Peux (love the caramel/ bread/ yeast in it, which surprises me because I’m not usually into sweet scents), and have just spritzed Jicky. I was hoping to attract my cat, but she’s under the bed because she’s scared if thunder.

Hello, everyone. I’m tired from a really bad night, running late and feeling harassed about it, wearing Black Cashmere to soothe and centre myself. Dakkie is grieving terribly, and cried –yelled and yodelled, really, as only a Siamese can– all night. I’m scared the neighbours will complain, but I don’t know what to do for him. I wish I could give him an absorbing book to read and a big busy project to occupy his mind. Black Cashmere is working its gentle magic on me: I wish I could find a solution in a bottle for him!

Be well, all. Your perfumes are making me dizzy with desire today: so many that sound gorgeous and beguiling, that I’ve never smelt so far, and may never.

I just googled “how to quiet a grieving cat” (I have too much time on my hands), and didn’t find much that I think would be of too much help to you, but you could try it and see. Most of the literature centred around “could he possibly be grieving his dead friend that he spent 24 hours a day with for the last x many years?” Duh. According to several places, though you are onto something when you talk about something to occupy his mind. Most caution against getting another pet too soon. I hope you both get some sleep tonight.

Oh, poor Dakkie and poor you! It’s so hard when you can’t tell them what’s going on. :( We had two cats that we had raised from the age of 8 weeks – they were from two different litters, but grew to be inseparable. When Moose died, Squirrel stopped eating. I took her to the vet, who diagnosed grief. We gave her a lot of attention and she did start eating again. We pondered the “get another cat” question, but ultimately decided not. She was too old to cope with a kitten, and too timid to make friends with another cat. It’s hard to know what the right answer is, but I hope you find it, waterdragon.

When my dog died, the cat wandered around the house sadly looking for him for about two weeks. A homeopathic remedy named ignatia amara is good for grief, perhaps you could try that. Wishing you all peace and ease.

Very late today but got to try Eau Des Merveilles Bleue in my way home. It strikes me as very similar to the original, minus the orange, but though I’ve had it on for only about an hour it is very faint at this point. I’m trying to be logical as my first reaction is that I love the original and have a ton of it, and I really don’t need more of something so similar (or anything at all for that matter)…oh, that blue bottle is so very pretty.

    Late,to the party!

    SOTD = Chanel No. 5 L’Eau

There’s jasmine in this so yay, I am participating the project!

Eau la la! Softly aldehylic floral. Reminds me of a perfume made with 4 parts Eau Premiere and 1 part No. 5 EDT, then proportionately lightened to make it perfect for spring and summer. 3 sprays lasted 5 hours. I think I will lavishly spray tomorrow (5 sprays) to see how long it lasts. I have a 50 mL that is eau so cute! I bought it at Macy’s and could tell that the SA was judging me for not buying the more economical 100 mL but eh, I don’t care as I used my Macy’s money and the remnants of a gift card. I just went to the Chanel website and saw there’s a limited edition 1.2 oz which I bet is even more darling than my bottle.

You smell fantastic! L’Eau lasts pretty well on me too, especially considering it’s essentially a fancy cologne. It works really well on clothes or in hair, too. I can confirm the 1.2oz bottle is every bit as darling as you think! Mine was a gift but was from Sephora, acquired during the VIB 20%. I think they still have that size.

I find L’ Eau and Eau Premiere very similar too. I did a spray of each on different arms one day for comparison. To me they start out almost identical, but where I found the difference was in the drydown. I prefer L’ Eau, I think that soft white musk is lovely.
Also, the 35 ml bottle is darling. ???? I did get mine at Sephora.
