Tuesday scent of the day 4/4

Posted by Robin on 4 April 2017 255 Comments

American Tea Room Grand Jasmine Mu Dan Blooming Green Tea

It's Tuesday, and it's Free Cone Day at Ben & Jerry's! (Make mine #TeamCherryGarcia, please. And while we're talking ice cream, I'd like to thank Ben & Jerry's for the limited batch Chocolate Cherry Garcia, and say please, add it to the regular line.) What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm full-on jasmine with Serge Lutens A La Nuit. Tea at the moment: Kusmi Troika.

Reminder: on 4/7, wear a fragrance with jasmine, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is the (unfurled ball of) Grand Jasmine Mu Dan Blooming Green Tea from American Tea Room, $29.25 for 2 oz.

In Tom Ford’s Black Orchid. I’m recovering from a particularly nasty cold and it’s the only damn perfume I can smell at the moment!

Alien, and if I’d liked the drydown, might own it. There’s Joy. I actually like Michael Kors Glam Jasmine which is a perfectly serviceable and cheerful summery thing. And Bvlgari Jasmin Noir (in the black bottle) which is more opaque/woody for cooler months.

Let’s see. I love Alien and Alien Absolue, Pacifica Waikiki Pikake, Lush Lust and Sikkim Girls and the less obvious jasmines like Andy Tauer Lonestar Memory, a very green and subtle jasmine.

L’eau de Chloe is nice, very green and clean, I think of it as a rose lemonade sort of perfume, really just right on a sunny day!

I LOVE jasmine, and i share my name with this flower, so yaaay for jasmine.

    Yesterday evening:
Claire de lune, by Sultan Pasha Attars (from a sample). Jasmine with a capital J, an overdose for jasmine lovers only.
Its lovely. But he does not produce/sell this one at the moment.

    Today:
PG 23 Drama Nuui by Pierre Guillaume/Parfumerie Générale (from a sample)
There is no drama in Drama Nuui.
Opens with a light jasmine, but on my skin turns into a watery almost lily-like scent. Supported by soft spices, wood and something herbal/green.
Its a pretty but not memorable scent, the jasmine tea I drank this aftenoon had more drama ;)

I adore Claire de Lune and wish he did offer it for sale. It’s my second favorite that I’ve sampled (after Pure Incense). I think I would consider it one of the prettiest jasmines I’ve tried, and it doesn’t give me a headache like so many do.

    SOTD is “Miksado” from Jeroboam.

    Top: bergamot, labdanum and saffron;
    Mid: cedar, guaiac wood and geranium;
Base: patchouli, vanilla and white musk.

I like this one a lot. It was a freebie from Jovoy, a miniature bottle (I think 5ml – that’s maybe €15 worth on its own). I hadn’t previously heard of the perfume or even of the house. It is, to my mind, almost a gourmand (think of highly spiced arabic sweetmeats). But not quite, because thankfully it just isn’t that sweet. It is making me think of last week’s Arte Profumi “Bois Sacré” and I wish I could try them side-by-side. Lasting power is good.

Sampling Olivine Atelier Gigi perfume oil. It is said that Madonna is a fan, and I can see why- it’s yummy! I wore a tiny bit to work on Sunday and one of my coworkers commented that I smelled good. Love it when that happens.
I’ve never worn perfume oil before, any good tips on proper application? I dabbed on my wrists and neck.

“Rain before 7, done by 11.”????

I’ve tried a couple of Olivine’s at Anthropologie and thought they were quite nice-I think the self-titled one and another I can’t remember.
I’m a newish fan of oils and have a few. How I apply depends how potent they are. The less potent ones I tend to apply very liberally over a wider area. The potent ones I apply like you did today. And someone did notice you! Always nice to get a compliment ????
And if it’s gonna rain, it needs to be done by the time I have to commute!! It’s drizzly here today.

I have recently given up on perfume oils. My skin eats perfume, and oils tend to a) not radiate past an inch and b) disappear within an hour. (Exception Tauer Rose Delight, but that’s a fragrance body oil rather than a perfume oil. Don’t know why/if that matters.)

Most people don’t seem to have that problem with oils, so I say if they work for you, good on ya! Your application seems fine – dabbing on pulse points, or smearing a little bit more on if it’s a quiet scent should do well.

My initial impression is limited radiation too. Most of the Olivine scents are offered in edp too and I debated over which form to try…decisions, decisions.

I usual use perfume oil/essential oil perfume on the tops of my feet before my yoga class (this way I get nice whiffs in all forward folds and I am the only one who can smell it)…you can also apply in your hair, in the crook of your arm or the back of your knees if you don’t like the feel of it on your wrist or neck. As much as I like to be a sillage monster and spray I also enjoy the intimacy of a perfume oil which has very little projection.

My newish favorite Ben & Jerry’s is Spectacular Speculoos Cookie Core. It is pretty spectacular.
Cousins with Robin today in SL Sarrasins. I could bathe in this stuff.
I detoured to the Chelsea Barney’s last eve while getting my broken router replaced and gave a sniff to the new FM Superstitious. It’s floral, a little fruity from peach or apricot with a bitter edge, a little sweaty and dried down a bit soapy. My impression: very French. I liked it but felt kind of uncomfortable in it so don’t think it’s something I’d wear. I’m curious to hear other’s take on it when they’ve tried it.

Nice! Do report back. It was my first time at the Chelsea location and I liked it better-much less aggressive SAs who at the other stores seem to descend on me insisting I need a makeover, lol. I know they need to sell cosmetics but…They don’t have Le Labo but have mostly everything else. I also tried Durga (at Twisted Lily, but Barney’s has it) and I really liked it! Oddly compelling to me.

I prefer HD as well, and my freezer’s always stocked with it. I don’t buy too many other brands. B&J I’m not a fan of at all. Their ice creams are too sweet, and I think they add stuff that makes it chewy (carageenan et al), which I’m not a fan of.

I love the mix of flavors in B&J and the chinks slow down how fast I eat it, but the HD coffee is fabulous and the absence of thickeners is a plus. It’s more like the recipe you would make at home.

Yeah, I prefer my ice cream without the stabilizers/ texturizers which is why I prefer HD generally. Especially for the plain flavors.

Easing into my summer rotation, today is quirky Wisteria Hysteria, which I have applied liberally (half my sample) and am enjoying the whiffs of summer garden and old machinery I get from it. Now that this sample, the 7th one, I believe, is gone, I am once again confronted with the question of how to get some more. The bottle does nothing for me. Is there anyone out there who loves the bottle and would like to do a big split with me???? :-)

This one is still a candidate for a FB for me.

The 2 voices in my head:
Voice 1 – “But you already have a lot of jasmine centred scents, pretty expensive ones as well. You dont need another one”
Voice 2 – “But his one is different from the ones you already own. You need a jasmine with tobacco in you life. And its not very expensive.”

I’m voting for Voice 2. It really IS different from other jasmine scents. And it’s so light that you can spray with abandon and drain a bottle in no time, therefore feeling completely justified in your FB purchase.

No, you can choose any flavor you like. They are introducing 3 new flavors that are also available: Urban Bourbon, Oat of this Swirled and Truffle Kerfuffle. I went at luch time but the line for the free cone was really awful. I decided to buy a pint instead, so I could be back to work on time. I already had some. The rest at home tonight if I can control myself until then…..

Urban Bourbon is burnt caramel ice cream with almonds, fudge flakes and bourbon caramel swirls. Really good. I got the Salt Caramel Core. I have been in a salted caramel kick lately. I have indulged in lots of Bequet caramels. The best are the Celtic Sea Salt, Chocolate Orange and Chipotle. Their variety and quality are excellent. To die for…..

Salted caramel is very addictive. Those caramels sound really good. Especially that chipotle one.

No perfume so far today (iffy head) but I have been working on finishing up my sample of Hummingbird and trying to convince myself that it’s too much sweet and clean laundry for me to wear regularly. So far I’ve enjoyed it, dryer sheets and all, and it’s still on my wishlist. I wonder why something that I usually can’t stand works so well for me in this case?

Planning to downsize my ‘fume collection.

Wearing lovely Crown Bouquet, drinking a latte, and puzzling over the most recent (it should be the *last*) e-bill from Yale: a $2 library fine, the first one Bookworm’s received in almost four years. What, they don’t take cash at the front desk anymore? Shaking my head.

Like I had hoped, she was bringing me a souvenir from The Perfume House in Portland….I am now the very proud owner of a large bottle of Annick Goutal Chèvrefeuille!! I’ve owned it for 16 hours and I’ve already made a dent in it. I’m in a happy cloud of it, and probably will be all week.

I need a 12 step program for Ben & Jerry’s. I can easily resist other ice cream, but I love theirs. My favorite all time flavor is in the Flavor Graveyard- Cool Britannia.
Target has an exclusive flavor called a Brewed to Matter- it’s coffee with brownie batter swirl. Thankfully, I don’t get there often.

I’m wearing By Kilian Love and Tears, by the way….. very healthy!!

    Happy Tuesday!

    1) Free cone day! Ah, but the lines will be CRAZY.

    2) SOTD: Molinard’s Jasmin. Now, for the compare and contrast: I checked out a sample of Jasmin Rouge last week. Lovely, rich but very sheer, meant to be worn, imo, for hot days or sexy times. Molinard’s Jasmin has a similar jasmine-y, heady feel, but it is more indolic and longer lasting. I got this at Anthropologie a while back for a song, but the regular price -$69.99- is worth saving up some pennies for.

    3) Coffee, Greek yogurt and nutty granola.

Realized as I was pulling my bike up to the rack today that, in fact, I don’t have my bike lock with me. I hope it’s on the floor of my garage or somewhere in my house. We’ll find out this afternoon. In the meantime, my bike is keeping my company in my office.

Divin Enfant was my first ELdO full bottle. On me it’s a nerolic, vanillary powder with a hint of warm skin. Lovely stuff.

I”m not particularly good at picking out a lot of individual notes yet, so for jasmine week, I’m simply going through my stash and finding stuff that has jasmine listed in the notes. Today is Cuir Ottoman. Blind swapped for it last week and am really enjoying it.

Hope everyone has a nice day!

Shalimar EdP today. Been years since I wore this. Feeling the need to spray even more, more, more.

Realized I have a number of scents with Jasmine in them, so I’m going to focus on the ones I don’t wear very often.

Disappointing basketball game last night. My husband had a running commentary on how badly the teams were playing. As he said at one point, “they’re playing hard but stupid and poorly.”

Whenever I’ve watched basketball (very rarely) I’ve wanted both teams to slow down so I can see what’s going on. I’m like, Can you stop running around! Kind of like having to supervise a playground of toddlers. I do watch cricket sometimes…so much easier.

I’m trying CdG Floriental, from a spray sample. Not sure why I ordered this one – maybe I fell for the name.
It’s definitely a better choice for January in Houston, not April, so I will tuck it away to try later.
I’m not to the point where I need to scrub it, but I may need to spray something on top of it to quiet it down. Any suggestions?

Added Eau de Rhubarbe Ecalarte to the other wrist as I have no plum. That works also, it freshens it up.

Went to go look and see where I could get some free B&J and all the ones in San Diego have closed with one exception, and that one isn’t close to me. Black as black and cold. First frost yesterday. Sampling Olympic Orchids Dev Four . I haven’t read any information about it so I don’t know anything about Dev or the notes. Strongest impression is pine resin and sweet banana ( or possibly pineapple lumps…chocolate covered chewy pineapple sweets, our national dish) . Woody, too . Not pencil shavings but woodworker’s workshop, kind of dusty. The ‘flavour’ or identity of the sweetness dies down so it becomes less banana and more a undefined sweetness…a bit like sugar cane. Close to the skin. Not very complex and becomes soft woody, resin. Again that touch of celery…maybe clary sage? More wearable than Bay Rum.
Re. BAy Rum…it was nice on my hanky left in the corner of the room…filled the air and was interesting. But I couldn’t wear it even though it offers something to expand my perfume experience and range…a good challenge!
I see that Ellen Covey created Bat for Zoologist ( haven’t smelt that). To me, she seems to be somehwere in the post Lush/ Comme des Garçons/ Smell Bent world…pushing out a bit. Now it just smells resiny, but a true tree resin, like you’d pick off the bark of a pine tree. Oops, bit long…sorry!!

They always take things off the website when they’re out of them, so you can’t go by that. They do still have it in the 15 ml, and the French site still has it in 100 ml.

Good morning, all. It was a wild night, heavy unceasing rain, early intimations of a nasty winter? Maybe. The day is roofed over by thick unmoving clouds, and the rain continues. It would have been a good day to work in bed with my laptop on my knees, but I have some pressing need that I can’t presently recall to go to the office.

I’m wearing Estée Lauder Jasmine White Moss. It’s exceedingly pretty and highly wearable in an undistinguished sort of way, by which I mean that it has no edges to bump against or quirkiness to enchant. It’s highly polished and presentable. That’s not a bad thing, just maybe doesn’t suit my mood in a storm. I’ve made a bad match for the day, I think. I should have chosen something very grounded, like Coromandel or something full of air, like–well, actually, I can’t think of a perfume that suggests wild air, but there must be one.

    Be well, all.

Oooooh, a pint of Cherry Garcia sounds fabulous right about now. Maybe I should grab both the original and the chocolate version, given how my day has been going.

The good news is I’m back to wearing perfume; no more headache! SOTD = Giorgio Armani Acqua di Gioia EdP, from a sample. It does have jasmine in it, but alas, it is also aquatic. Not me at all. Bad news is that I did something stupid to one of my email accounts. Mr. Jalapeno (aka tech support) is pretty sure that he can fix it, though.

Hope the NST commenters in New Zealand are OK. I heard about the terrible weather on the noon news. Stay safe and dry folks!

SOTD–Jasmin de Nuit. I was going to wear A la Nuit, but didn’t want Robin to think that I was stalking her two days in a row!! Sun is peaking in and out today, so this one is perfect in its spicy goodness. Need to line up all my jasmines and wear them more often. I’m sitting at a Homeowners’ Meeting seeing tomatoes being thrown around.

    SOTD = Science experiment

Today, I dabbed Mohur Extrait on my left forearm and Mohur EDP on the roght forearm. This past Sunday, I sprayed extrait on the right and EDP on the left.

    Observations:
    – Dabbing EDP makes it last longer. Spraying extrait makes ot last longer.
    – Exrrait starts off with an almost aldehylic bright and spicy rose. EDP starts off with a musky clean powdery muted spicy rose.
    – EDP loses the muted veil and becomes similar to Extrait
    – EDP dries down soapier than the Extrait
    – I did not get the oily pencil shavings smell that I recalled

    Conclusion:
    – if you like your perfume to morph over time and don’t mind soapiness in the drydown, wear EDP
    – If you like a deeper rose with less variation over time, wear Extrait
