Wednesday scent of the day 3/29

Posted by Robin on 29 March 2017 322 Comments

Frida Kahlo

It's Hump Day! Plus, a very happy birthday to Eric Idle. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in vintage Dana Emir, courtesy of Kevin. If you ever see a stray bottle of Emir for sale, do snap it right up.

Reminder: on 3/31, your pick of Swap Love or Blind Love...wear a fragrance you acquired via a swap, or wear a fragrance you bought unsniffed. Double bonus points for wearing one of each, triple bonus points for a Blind Swap Love. If you don't swap or buy unsniffed, just wear a fragrance you love. (adapted from a suggestion by Pixel)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Don't be silly chumps! (warning: mild profanity, whistling and general silliness)

I wish Eric Idle a very happy birthday. I’ve recently been rewatching bits of a documentary on the Pythons (Monty Python almost the truth). Great fun and very insightful. The clip is hilarious!
My SOTD is Sweet Redemption, a gorgeous and moody orange blossom. Nothing Pythonesque about it.

There are only bits of it on Youtube. I remember watching it for the first time either on the BBC or Dutch television a long time ago. It’s wonderful. Another great interview is the one called Live in Aspen, where Eddy Izzard has a small role, and even Graham is present, despite having long before joined the choir invisible.

Oh, no, did not realize “watch list” meant YouTube. Just meant generically that I would put it on my list of things to watch :-)

“I want to cook you a soup that warms your soul.” ~ King of Sorrow
    Listening to Sade this morning…

Today is my Natal Anniversary, Birthday or Reincarnation Day-anyways..today is Lovestosmellgood Day.
    SipOTD french press coffee
SOTD is 31RC ET from a small decant that has a few sprays left.

This was the bottle that broke on my kitchen floor that I posted about last week, from the swap. I traded 2 bottles for this and was completely bummed when I didn’t realize that the box opened from the bottom. And then crack on the floor..glass and perfume everywhere. I am thinking of just trying the new version. Any thoughts

Cheers to “always looking on the bright side of life”

Happy Birthday! Oh gosh, I’m so sorry that it was 31RC EdT. Ebay has some 12ml offerings, as well as a couple of bottles. Not the same as a swap, but it IS your birthday! I haven’t tried the edp, so can’t be of any help there.

I’ve heard the two versions of 31 rue de Cambon are significantly different. It doesn’t hurt to try the new version (after all, you might even prefer it), but it would be best to do that quickly in case you don’t like the EdP and would decide to hunt for the original.

Started out this morning in Un jardin sur le Nil (i think Tracy.o mentioned it yesterday, so I dug up the sample a friend once gave me).

And i just dabbed on a tiny drop of Vetiver Blanc (by Sultan Pasha Attars).
    Tuberose – Vetiver – ambergris.
ITS GORGEOUS!!! It fits my taste perfectly, like it was tailor made. One of my favourite discoveries of last few months.

Wish you all a good wednesday and of course happy birthday to mr Idle! When I was young we had video tape recordings (yeah remember those days? Haha) of life of brian and MP and the holy grail, in the pre-netflix age, we watched them over and over again.

SOTD is “Bois Sacré” from Arte Profumi.

Official notes are just oud, sandalwood and labdanum.

Kiss test: I may have found a prince!. My goodness, this is nice stuff. Any of you home baking types ever use Malep in your bread? It’s the crushed stone of a sort of sour cherry, with a taste somewhere between almond, cherry and honey. This one reminds me of that. Performance-wise it clears the half-day hurdle, just.

To dentist today for cleaning/checkup. The sinus infection seems to be clearing, albeit slowly.

Wearing a coral tee, bright pink shirt jacket, khakis and ballet flats in a coral/pink/lavender tulip print, as well as Cuir de Lancome. Bonus: in the pocket of the khakis (which, puzzlingly, looked crisply pressed on the hanger), I found my missing sample of CdG Stephen Jones. Huh.

Vintage Hermes Bel Ami. It is RIDICULOUS how good this is, lush and multifaceted. The current version is still pretty good, much better than most other men’s scents on the market, but it smells kind of thin and wan next to this.

p.s. re: fully developed lushness vs. thin and wan: I had that moment last weekend when trying JM Blue Hyacinth after Tom Ford Vert de Fleur. Based on an earlier test, I was ready to buy Blue Hyacinth, but it felt so thin and limp compared to Vert de Fleur that I ended up not buying anything.

I’m on airplane for most of today, so I’ve opted for something fresh and light instead of the leather/big white floral/leather scents I’ve been gravitating towards lately.

I’m in Maison Martin Margiela Untitled L’eau, (more swapmeet spoils! I made out like a bandit, y’all) which is fitting the bill perfectly- inoffensive enough for anyone sitting next to me but with enough of a green bite to keep me from falling over from extreme indifference.

S(ip)otD is a Starbucks mocha protein shake, because of the aforementioned spending the morning on an airplane.

They’re my absolute favorite too-busy-for-breakfast shakes. I can’t do soy, and these are 100% whey protein. Also, they actually taste good, have 20 grams of protein, and the caffeine of a regular latte.

Speaking of DS& Durga, I’m wearing Spirit Lamp perfume oil-peach water, petitgrain, hot metal, bohea tea. Sounds more interesting than it is, which is a peachy bitter citrus, with a hint if what smells like hot metal. I do love it but would be better if it weren’t buried under clothes.
And Happy Birthday Eric Idle. MP antics never fail to make me laugh.

Happy birthday to Eric Idle. I’m a huge Python fan and am so grateful to have grown up with their humor in my life.
Wearing something beautiful from Sultan Pasha, but I can’t locate my list of scents (the samples are numbered) so have no idea which one it is. It’s one of the floral ones and is so good on this cool-ish morning after a storm. I’m off to play in the garden before work so my new plants can enjoy the damp soil. Wish I had gotten them planted yesterday.

The first time I tried it, I was expecting a creamier scent and then once I adjusted, I found it interesting. This time, I discovered that I just don’t like the opening – it’s too acrid, maybe? Hours later, I’m enjoying it but don’t want more than my 3mls.

Hello lovelies! I hope you’re all very well, healthy and happy! Want to try to start phasing NST back into my life again after a too-long hiatus.

After going into my largely scentless fugue state of the past few months, I think I’m finally feeling more settled and ready to get back to a scented life. I wore Eau Suave yesterday and some of it is still lingering on my coat. Today, I’m wearing Osmanthus-scented lotion from Acqua di Stresa, purchased with Hajusuuri and TheGoddessRena three years ago when Bendels was clearing out their non-Bendel products. It’s making me happy.

Also, I’m leaving for a two week trip to Europe on Friday!!! The Black Forest of Germany, Munich, Salzburg, Vienna, and Prague are all on the itinerary. So, so excited.

Warm wishes to all of you lovely ones.

I’m also having a birthday today. Normally I like celebrating my birthday, but we just got blindsided by something we learned about a close family member and I’m not feeling terribly festive right now. SOTD is Pillow Talk from my Olfactif samples this month. That dose of pink pepper is helping me feel just a bit better.

I’ve been enjoying the subscription and I think it’s worth the $. I haven’t pulled the trigger on a full bottle yet (Pillow Talk is the most tempting to me so far), but I’ve been having fun with the samples. There are some that I’m holding off on wearing as they strike me as more warm weather fragrances. I say go for it!

Happy Birthday Eric Idle. His performance in Love Actually deserves awards.

SOTD – Roger and Gallet Bois d’Orange, in the cute little 30 ml bottle. Why doesn’t everybody put out 30 ml bottles? Anyway, this was a swap or a freebie that I let sit around for a while before I gave it a good testing. I liked it, and I keep wearing it, and I keep liking it more and more. When it is just too hot and muggy out for Seville a l’Aube, this will be the perfect summertime alternative.

Book on Tape OTD (BOTOTD – LOL) New York 2140, by Kim Stanley Robinson – what I am currently listening to on my commute. New York has been partially submerged by the rising sea, and people respond in a variety of ways, as they always do. There are refugee kids, and well meaning cops and social workers, and a day trader who is a really good guy, and the Russian who can fix anything… I love Kim Stanley Robinson. His Mars books are just great. I love his expansive view of human capabilities – the hubris of the idea of 100 people terraforming Mars cracks me up. I love his characters (Maya Toitovna is the best character in the Mars books, and the best line is the book is about her – “(In the face of so many catastrophes and much death) Maya was the only one strong enough to keep on feeling.” This ranks as one of the three best lines in literature to me…but I am trying to talk about the new book!) This book is also a primer on catastrophic consequences of climate change. Please send copies of this to every politician you know. Unaffiliated with him of course, just a fan.

Thanks everyone! I think it went well, but in hindsight, I might have sold myself a little short. While I was waiting for the interview I had to laugh at myself because i so wanted to sniff my wrists (the perfumista salute) I stopped myself, because I knew that would be the exact moment my name was called! I did smell fabulous though.

Rain, rain, go away…feels like it has been raining here for weeks nonstop. (Maybe it didn’t while I was away on vacation? But it rained for weeks before and has been raining ever since I got home. The short break for actual spring in Japan was so lovely.) So…sick…of…rain. Yesterday was SL Iris Silver Mist, because it seemed to fit the mood, but I think it fit the mood a little too well. So this morning…hmm. Decisions, decisions. Thinking I may go with some old Calyx, which is a bit odd, but given how much my visit to Japan felt like a trip back to about 1989, and the need of a summer reminder…I think I’ll go that way once I have the family fed and out of the house.

    Good morning Y’all!

Working 1/2 a day at my paying job, before heading out for an afternoon of Mommy duties. I’m always trying to find that working mom’s balance…but I suspect there really isn’t a true balance. We just do the best we can! :)

For me it’s not so much “balance” as careening blindly and wildly out of control on a unicycle down a steep cobbled street, and then at the end of every day saying, “Wow, amazing, I didn’t crash!” Which I guess is what success is going to look like for the forseeable future (until I abruptly lose my mind). Hang in there — you’re not alone!

The connection is tenuous. Frida Kahlo had a bottle of Dana Emir, and Kevin talks about it in his review. So there is a connection, however slight.

No connection to Eric Idle, though.

agreed! The original WASN’T! I have a sample of the old version and while it’s not incredible, it is green apple fun. I was told by the manager of the counter at Barney’s that Malle was never happy with the original and so that’s why it was reformulated. Well, the reformulation is AWFUL. All white musk and laundry. Very disappointed.

Happy Birthday to Eric Idle! I remember watching Monty Python on PBS in my teens. My parents let me watch it since, if it’s on PBS, it must be ‘culture’. If only they had known…! (Glad they didn’t watch it with me!)

SOTD is a Blind Buy Love, and a leather: Canoe Skive. I bought this on nozknoz’s recommendation, here on NST. And she was so very right :) Thanks, nozknoz!

Sending good wishes and positives thoughts to all NST’ers today.

SOTD started out with Tokyo Milk’s Sea and Sky (the poor man’s Eau des Merveilles, sort of), but it wasn’t doing it on it’s own, so I added a few spritzes of a recent impulse buy, Sea Salt and Fig. SS & F came from Old Navy where I was buying a birthday present for my niece. They had a bunch of cheap and cheerful fragrances at the cash register, and this seemed like a good bet to keep in the refrigerator to spray with wild but cool abandon this summer.

SotD = Infusion d’Amande, from a decant bought unsniffed if I recall correctly. No surprise that I love it! I think all of Les Infusions de Prada (ooh la la) would work for me, but I imagine they are similar enough in style that one or two would be enough to float my boat.

I’m very grateful for NST splitmeets and especially for the generous perfumista who hosted the Id’A split. yay!

And, um, why Frida Kahlo today? Adorably fierce photo.

Fun anecdote: a nearby elementary school hosts an annual “person I admire” day. Students can opt to dress as their admired person and share their inspiration with their classmates. There are always a handful of students dressed as Frida. Makes me smile every time.

Back from a quick trip to the States for my sister’s wedding, and back into the swing of too much to do here. My splitmeet goodies were waiting for me at my family’s house, plus fun samples etc. I’m wearing Rodin Olio Lusso from a sample gifted to me, and it’s way out of my league price-wise. Oh well, it isn’t $100 better than the Aftelier ancient resins oil that was also waiting for me.
Speaking of oils, I got some of the Stash oil when I was there, and it is to be used in small quantities, but it is delightful!

After the wreck yesterday I am feeling pretty beat up today. The bruises and swelling is worse than yeterday, which they warned me at the hospital it would be. So I’m home taking some good meds.

Trying Majda Bekkali Tulaytulah. It’s nice but too sweet for me. If it wears off I’m going to spray myself in one of my comfort scents. I will say that I put this on a while back and the staying power seems excellent.

Oh, I feel your pain! Recently my car was rear-ended while I was stopped at a stop light – the driver was texting and therefore paying zero attention. Car was totaled. I was OK (though badly shaken and had nightmares for quite a while) except for tremendous bruising where the seat belt held me back. Don’t be surprised if it takes quite some time for the bruising and tenderness to go away. In the meantime, be kind to yourself – and maybe treat yo’self, as Donna Meagle would say. Glad to hear they gave you some good pain meds, and I hope you’ll be feeling better soon.

Thank you all so much. If you are able, please do send positive thoughts my way. Yes, it was my new car. :( I was turning left at a high traffic intersection (I had the green arrow to turn) and when I pulled into the intersection, a lady hit me full speed driver side. She ran her redlight. Not sure if she was on a phone or messing with a radio or possibly, since I was the first person to go after the light changed, maybe she was gunning it to try and make it through before it turned red. Never been hit so hard in my life. Luckily she hit the rear driver side door, not mine. She was going to fast that if she’d hit my door I’d probably still be in the hospital or dead. But the damage to the car is extensive. After she hit me driver side, it spun me several times and hit me again head on.

Sorry for the long post. I guess I’m just still in shock. Thanks for the kind words. I appreciate being a part of a caring community. Hugs.

Wow. Last night you already said someone hit you full speed driver’s side, but it sounds much more scary with more details. It is an amazing thing you were not hurt worse.

I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to repeat myself. It’s just so surreal when I think about it.

Oh please, you did not repeat yourself, you provided more details! Plus, not everyone here saw yesterday’s poll.

I am sure it feels surreal.

Terrifying! I am so glad you were not extensively injured, from what you describe you could have been killed. I am so sorry for your new car too, double ouch. :-(. Hopefully the insurance will do right by you. Sending lots of healing vibes.

I’m so sorry about your car accident, it must have been terrifying. Last year we were broadsided by a speeding car in snowy conditions, and ended up being pushed into a ditch and rolling twice down a hill, totalling our vehicle obviously. Like you, we were in shock for a long time. I happened to be at the health food store soon afterwards to get some Trauma cream for my humongous hematomas (as a result of the accident) with the help of a nurse who happened to be there as well. She recommended an oral Boiron pellet mixture called aconitum nappelus; it’s supposed to help you get over a traumatic event and assist with relaxing your mind. Take good care and be gentle with yourself.

I will have to look into that cream, I have huge bruises and swelling all over, especially my left side- hip, shoulder, all across my stomach. Your accident sounds truly horrifying!

It was, thankfully we miraculously were only bruised badly, no broken bones or worse. The airbags saved us for sure! The cream is called “Traumacare” (in a white box).

trying Good Girl Gone Bad Extreme. The only thing I’d say about these two extreme versions is that if one was in the position to buy either Straight to Heaven or Good Girl Gone Bad, I would go ahead and buy the extreme versions while they’re around. They last much longer on my skin and you need to use less as well. Of course they’re ridiculously expensive, which is why I say if you were ALREADY going to purchase one or the other. (and of course the extreme versions are more than the normal versions, but I actually think it’s worth it to shell out the extra cash.)

I called Husband in to watch Eric Idle, and the whistling in the video summoned the dog! The three of us watched with rapt attention. Made our day! Thanks, Robin! My friend’s daughter looks just like Frida above. Rain is record-breaking here, supposed to relent tomorrow so I must break out the Apres L’Ondee.

    SOTD is Pacifica Persian Rose.

A very Happy Birthday to Mr. Idle! Robin, thanks for the video–I’ll be whistling that the rest of the day! (And if I may indulge in a bit of snark: I love how Janet Jackson and Tyler Perry clearly have no freakin’ idea what the deal is.)

It’s such an easy choice. I often choose it on days, like today, when I want to just bypass perfume indecision and grab something I know will work. I think it’s a really good soliflore, and you certainly can’t beat the price.

Ok, this is sad, but I could not figure out WHO those people were who clearly did not know the words to Look On The Bright Side, but were obviously famous enough to get on Graham Norton. Really, that’s Janet Jackson?? Did not even look like her.

Still don’t know who the last man on the couch was.

Oh dear, I’m having a hard time keeping up with reading this week. Just a bunch of little random things all ganging up at once.
After loving last week’s spring scents, and despite the better weather, I’m dipping back into cozy things like Santal Majuscule and Ambra Nera to get me through this week. Today is DSH Chinchilla, which on me is a lovely honey scent that disappears far too soon, but leaves a very soft skin-like musk for quite a while.
I hope everyone has a beautiful wednesday!

I haven’t been posting much lately and am so late today but want to rejoin the party!
Super bummed today though. A little piece of tooth sheared off the other day so went to the dentist today and I need a crown. Trying to save money for a trip (and sitting on my hands wishing I could buy Arbole arbole and now Histoires 1740 both of which I’m so lemming for)…now cha-ching! Giant dentist bill.

At least I smell fabulous now in 5 whole sprays of Coromandel.

    Late again today!

SOTD = Naomi Goodsir Iris Cendre

The decant was courtesy of clarissa, Queen of Splits and Swaps and in many ways, my scent twin, which means I am in big trouble.

Love the color of the juice and the perfume is a solid rooty powdery Iris – LOVE.

The Macy’s Flower Show is gearing up and the theme this year is carnival – vintage kitsch at its finest. Step right up!
