Monday scent of the day 3/20

Posted by Robin on 20 March 2017 242 Comments

oranges and chocolates

It is Monday, yes, but it's also the International Day of Happiness! What fragrance is (hopefully) making you happy today?

I'm quite happy in my Fendi Theorema.

Reminder: on 3/24, wear one of your "top 10 of spring" fragrances (unless it's fall where you are, in which case wear one of your "top 10 of fall" scents)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

You are early today Robin. I’m happy in Amouage Gold. Today is the last day of my internship. It’s been great fun, and I’m sad that it has come to a close.

Tea is MF Thé de Lune

I see Amouage listed here often, I should try finding a place to sample them. Any suggestion on one to try?

I’m with Triestobeclassy below. I love my Amouage sampler. I think you can start smaller with a sample pack at TPC or STC, but the set is a much better deal per ml. My favorites are Dia Woman, Jubilation 25, and Beloved Woman.

I live in Europe and I got most of my samples from ebay and from a Dutch perfume shop. I see you have been given some good suggestion for the US below.

Nothing exciting in the near future as I will have to finish my training, but this internship (translating) will help to find jobs in that field much more easily.

First day of spring but it will probably start raining here in SF area again so I chose FM l’eau hiver. I love it and it is a lovely middle ground for work.

Hi Shelley, adding my two pennies worth, my favourites are jubilation 25, Epic and Journey woman, this one is so beautiful and lovely for spring (tea, osmanthus, apricot, mimosa, honey, saffron and tobacco, are some of the notes.) The silage is wonderful, and it lasts for such a long time too!

Wearing Robert Piguet V.Intense from the Splitmeet thanks to Clarissa.

I am really enjoying this scent – the plum is evident, but not pushy, and it is backed by beautiful sandalwood/vanilla notes.

How does it compare to the original Visa? (Pls say negative things, so I won’t be tempted to buy this! I really love my Visa. How to justify a flanker?????)

      • hannahmom says:
        20 March 2017 at 2:24 pm

I haven’t worn much of the original, but the Intense is really very nice.
8 hours in, it is still wafting nicely.
The opening plum note is so juicy, but not too sweet ( I like my purple notes to have minimal sugar). The Sandalwood has a lovely spice to it.
It is a bit more masculine that the original Visa, but that suits me just fine. I would have no trouble recommending this one.
*Disclaimer – Piguet’s scents love my body chemistry, and I have never tried any of his line that I did not immediately adore. YMMV*

Plus, if you use your Visa to buy a bottle of Visa Intense, you actually come out ahead, don’t you???

Wearing my last drops of Alahine. Today this scent is giving me comfort and I know this might sound strange. This past weekend my father’s health deteriorated badly. No much time left. Dad in general didn’t like perfumes. Aftershave lotions were more than enough for him. However, on women he liked very classy ones like Chanel 19 or Caron Nuit de Noel, worn very lightly. But for the last couple of months his smell sense changed a lot. One day, I wore Alahine and he said it was delicious. It reminded him of a dessert with raisins. One day, he asked me why I was not wearing it and from there on, everytime I go to see him, Alahine is with me. I hope to get the sample I ordered yesterday on time to keep giving him some pleasant olfactory comfort until the end. In the mean time I will bring my empty sample and put it in his pillow every day I visit him so he can smell it. I am sure he will love it. I guess Alahine will occupy a special place in my heart after this. I am sorry for my sad post, but I just needed to let it out and share it. Drinking triple strength coffee to keep my energy high on a crazy, busy day. Happy Monday everyone!

Since friday I am being plagued by a runny nose, sore throat and a nasty cough.
I am still able to smell and taste a thing or two. Phew.
Today I am wearing Hinoki by CdG.

Yesterday I saw Logan in the cinema! Very entertaining generational road movie meets bad ass action flick.
And Hugh Jackman finally had a chance to add more depth to the character he has been playing for ages now.

Hinoki is not really a spring scent btw. But it is slightly camphorous, so it worked fine this morning for my runny nose. ;)

Yesterday I was wearing Eau de Narcisse Bleu, now that surely IS a Spring scent.
You can see narcisses everywhere here right now. I also love the greek myth about Narcissus and Echo.

This cold has moved from my chest up into my nose and I feel like a faucet. :( Probably no perfume today since I can’t smell it. Good thing I got in some pleasant wears over the weekend (MG Plum and Henry Dunay Sabi).

However, I’m so so happy to have my daughter home on spring break this week!

I’m feeling kind of grumpy for International Happiness Day. Sprayed myself with Hanae Morae because it usually warms and comforts me. It is cold and grey outside and I have to go back to work tomorrow after a week off. I have given myself until noon to feel grumpy and then I have to get my act together.

Even for here in the desert, it’s a bit too warm for this time of year. But the temperature is supposed to drop 20+ degrees in a few days with the system moving in, so maybe the warmth *will* end up reaching you. I can try to mentally steer it your way. ????

Without any perfume at the moment. In the big boy laundry washing and drying my supersized sleeping bag while trying to complete a bunch of on-line work for next week. I have no patience for this inefficient process. All weekend I have been having issues accessing websites due to wrong info and inaccurate passwords, as well spontaneously being deemed “inactive.” So infuriating and a HUGE waste of time! Is this really what the workforce is reduced to? Am I getting paid for this nonsense? You bet your bippy I am! Ugh!

Happy First Day of Spring! In truth, we’ve been experiencing spring here in Denver for about 2 weeks (temps mostly in the 60s and 70s), so I’ve been breaking out the warmer weather scents earlier than usual.

Today I’m enjoying DSH Perfumes Fleuriste, my warm weather carnation. Dawn has a knack for carnation scents – I own all of hers – and this one is the only ‘cool carnation’ I know of; they are always hot-spicy. Fleuriste is uncannily reminiscent of stepping into the florist’s walk-in fridge and inhaling cool, spicy carnation. It’s a lovely, and very office friendly, carnation!

I mentioned the other day that I was not in the crowd that loved no. 5 (at least for myself), but have to say that my favorite aunt does not wear perfume but faithfully wears the no. 5 body powder and has for as long as I remember. When I hugged her the other day I had to comment on how wonderful she smelled. It’s just perfect on her. I’m sure you smell lovely as well!

I wasn’t in that crowd either, but perimenopause completely changed my preferences-it’s the only logical explanation- And like within a couple of months! I suddenly can’t deal with anything dense or sweet. I’m even craving slightly soapy scents now and I hated soapy! Cray. So never say never ????

I’m sampling Chanel’s 1932 again. It’s quite pretty, and I think if I owned it I’d make use of it. It’s quite demure and rather buttoned-up, and I feel like I should be wearing a velvet headband and serving deviled eggs for lunch on Martha’s Vineyard while guests play croquet on the lawn.

A random thought popped into my head a moment ago, when I calculated that I may actually have around 500 samples and decants in The Sample Sea, which means I have more than 500ml of perfume to test. Um … that’s an awful lot. What my brain was doing while I acquired all of that certainly cannot be called thinking. ;)

The sample sea – test 5 samples a day for 100 days, and it will be all taken care of. :-) This worked for me – I am now down to about 35 samples, in my sample box that has 44 slots for samples, so I have room now to get a few more. I have told myself, I will never have more than this box holds…except of course for the stash of samples for the next freebie meet…

The huge pile of samples did not bring me joy but made me anxious. The curated set of samples I have now, does give me simple joy. I look in that box and am delighted. There are actually several in there that I have not even sniffed yet..Barkane for one. I might wear it tomorrow…

Oh yes, I also have many very large samples. Hajusuuri has been extremely helpful in my understanding of perfumath. According to the Hajusuuri Effect, you have simply acquired some large samples for perfumath free!

Hope you’re enjoying your time off!

I love that Hajusuuri Effect.I apply it to most purchases.Lol.Time off has been “good” but stressful,as I am still stuck behind a big fat red-tape of bureaucracy, lawyers, executors and estate agents.Actually went back to work for a couple of days, including most of this week.Work(And NST!) are two happy places,at least.X

I understand, buddy. I’m the executor of my parents’ estates, and that’s been going on for more than two years. It finally occurred to me that when the various paid lawyers and bureaucrats screw up, they end up making more money than if they’d been efficient. Here I was thinking they were idiots. Oh well, it’s me. ;)

Oh gosh, I’m way too much of a lightweight to dump on a whole sample at once. I have the feeling that if I were to continue to prolong the timeline for this particular adventure, I wouldn’t get very far. I’m going to speed date what’s here, and most likely pass on the majority. I’ve come to understand that I need my perfumes and everything I own to tick a lot of boxes, and I don’t want to settle for anything that doesn’t fulfill that.

No SOTD, feeling meh. I’ve just looked at my 80+ bottles and declared I have nothing to wear. It’s not cold out enough anymore for my boozy, gourmand, or tobacco scents, but it’s too dark and brownish grey out for spring. I’m open to ideas if anyone’s got them!

My default cold/wet/gloomy spring scents seem to be leathers and/or green violets: Jolie Madame, Penhaligon’s Violetta, Cuir de Lancome. Or Infusion d’Iris, that works too.

International Happiness Day! Yes to that! I’m teaching early this morning (8 o’clock). having taught late last night. Can I Pollyanna that? Yep–I’m a morning person, so I’m wide awake and completely functional. My blood sugar was only a smidgen outside the normal range this morning. I’m wearing a particularly comfortable silk tunic and the warm golden glow of Fate, and really, I feel as though I’m surrounded by a nimbus of perfect light that moves as I do. These small things make me happy. I still want to resign, though. My job is on another level of consideration. I don’t think it fits me anymore. It’s like a dress that looks good on the hanger, but turns out to be high in the waist, or exactly the wrong length for your legs, or tight in the sleeves, or something.

Hey, be happy, well and fragrant, NST.

SotD = Après L’Ondée came to mind as I woke this morning. Today’s weather is appropriately cool and grey. I dream of someday finding an old bottle of Après L’Ondée.

I’ve read and re-read wonderful reviews about this fragrance here at NST and from as far back as 2005 (Bois de Jamin) up to today (EauMG). When I wear it I often think of these words (from Olfactoria’s Travels):

” . . . when I am feeling fragile and a bit overwhelmed with the day ahead of me, nothing is better than Aprés L’Ondée.”

Bleck! Not feeling International Day of Happiness. Spent the morning at the vet with my cat. Plan C: Feeding tube. So he’s in a quick surgery and then staying at the vet’s until this evening for recovery and feeding. It was a hard decision. Vet was all for it, but our grizzly ol’ fella can’t tell me what he wants–I just hope we are not torturing him.

Now I am home and no work has come over the transom so I am exacerbating my discomfort by listening to the House Intelligence Committee hearings…(winces!)

Perfume? Nothing yet. My desk is still recovering from yesterday’s marination session– twelve different perfume drips and spills during my decanting marathon. The alpha scent? Carnal Flower. I think I have had my fix for tuberose for the next month! I’m considering what may be antidote. Maybe I’ll scrounge up my Civet sample. That might just do the trick.

RE: hearings – you are a glutton for punishment. Once I start, I cannot look away, so I just don’t go there. But thank you. They need to know that the world is watching. Sorry about poor old kitty.

      Tuberose always wins, I find.

After I decanted Coromandel for splits, I couldn’t wear it for several months. Whenever I took the cap off to try, the aroma would make me queasy. ????

And Coromandel is so tame compared to Carnal Flower. You’re right. Months is probably more accurate. And anything tuberose heavy. (I wish I could develop a sugar aversion so easily!)

Sending healing thoughts to Cat. When I do splits, assuming I have the bottles on hand, I decant the lightest scents first because otherwise the decants will smell of the alpha scent as well. I think POAL will trump Carnal Flower.

Wearing Gucci II eau de parfum. Perfect for meeting-palooza day at work. First time wearing, bought blind and so happy. Violets and jasmine reined in with bitter orange. Fruitchouliville could’ve so easily been the destination, but Gucci took a drier path, coupling the blackberry to cedar wood. Some days, pretty and translucent is all you want. GII delivers.

SOTD is Carthusia “Aria di Capri”.

    Top: lemon, bergamot and petitgrain;
    Mid: mimosa, jasmine, geranium and rose;
    Base: Cedar, musk and laurel.

Interesting. I don’t quite know what I think about it. Sweet-sour-salt with a topping of aldehydes. It’s not very ‘me’, but worth trying as it’s not run-of-the-mill either. Someone out there will love this one with a passion. :^)

Nope, it’s not run-the-mill. It’s an interesting floral aldehyde. I thought it would be ‘me’, but I got pretty much all mimosa…which, it would seem, is not so much my thing.

I went all-out with the happy-making fragrance today: La Fille de Berlin layered over LUSH Rose-Jam-scented shampoo bar and massage bar. Truth be told, I had no idea it’s International Day of Happiness; I just wanted a scent that makes my happy because I’m trying to fend off the gross cold/viral thing that’s hit most of my relatives already!

Be happy and stay healthy out there, NST.

Dark chocolate covered orange peel is like a party in my mouth!

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

Because spring. Because spine-stiffener. Someone had the audacity to tell me things worked well until I gpt involved. She’s a newbie and had no clue that I was the one who engineered the process that worked well for 4 months until someone in her new team messed up and changed the dynamics of what worked. She thought that just because we agreed to something it can’t ever change despite new information. Flawed logic on her part and she had pretty much fallen into a death spiral as far as I am concerned.

I stopped by the Whole Foods Market acoss from Bryant Park and methinks I may be back again. I passed by Kinokuniya and I saw the most darling pink Hello Kitty tote bag. Oh the temptation!

My SOTD is Tiziana Terenzi’s Maremma. Almost a dozen years ago (I can’t believe it’s been that long ago) I spent time in Maremma (which is on the western side of Tuscany, Italy). It is where Clint Eastwood’s “spaghetti westerns” were filmed. Every time I where it I think of that trip.
