Wednesday scent of the day 3/15

Posted by Robin on 15 March 2017 235 Comments

John Varvatos campaign 2013

Happy Hump Day, and happy World Consumer Rights Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing John Varvatos Artisan, by perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux.

Reminder: on 3/17, wear a perfume by Rodrigo Flores-Roux, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is Gary Clark Jr. and Jimmy Page for John Varvatos, 2013.

Was reading the WSJ this morning about how Neiman’s is putting themselves up for sale. It made me a bit sad how poorly department stores are doing these days. (no affiliation with WSJ or Neimans) When I lived in San Francisco I enjoyed the Neiman Marcus there very much. They had a great beauty department and you can have lunch and look out over Union Sq.

They aren’t going away but will probably be bought by Hudson’s Bay. But nothing is certain yet. Bergdorfs also falls under the Nemains umbrella

I’m always surprised when I visit the San Francisco NM as it is pretty much empty with just a few shoppers mulling about. Of course the beauty & fragrance staff are desperate for customers and so it’s not a positive thing from my perspective and reading the news it looks like many dept. stores are really struggling with the new way that people now shop and what they shop for.

        I agree.
This particular article mentioned that the reason for the decline is that many people are mixing high and low fashion, the internet lets you shop for more deals, and brands that use to be only found in department stores now have their own stores.

Yup. Which is why I will do research on stuff online BUT THEN shop for stuff in person. I will only seek out something online if it is impossible to get in Portland or truly unique.

It’s sad. As much as I like to shop on line, the experience of walking through a store like NM or BG cannot be reproduced. If you get to know a good SA, they can tell you when things that are your style or will fit you well go on sale. The cosmetics and fragrance SAs will be honest about new products. It saves time and money.
Too many daily personal interactions are disappearing and the “market” experience is a cultural one, not just commercial.

Yes, I am sooo tired of buying and returning things bought online. I loved it at first and it’s still great for buying perfumes that are unavailable elsewhere, but clothes, shoes and jewelry are frustrating. I have had so many failures I have mostly given up.

That is why I rarely ever buy clothing on-line unless it’s from Nordstrom as there is an actual Nordstrom store only about a half hour away from where I live, There is a Saks about 2 hours away and a Neiman Marcus about 1 1/2 hours away. However, I usually only purchase makeup, skin care and a few fragrances on line that I know I won’t need to return from any of those stores.

A friend of mine used to refer (tongue in cheek) to department stores as “museums of popular culture.”

Having visited some of the great ancient souqs of the Middle East, I see this shift to online shopping is comparable to human beings losing touch with agriculture.

Aedes de Venustas Signature EdP is the sample of the day. I saw the Friday theme and am saving my Oeillet Bengale sample for Friday. I did not like this one much when I received the sample a few years ago but am rethinking it now. They have great bottle design however.

SOTD = Guerlain Mon Precieux Nectar. Very pretty, no allergy triggers, subtly boring, perfect for work! :-) I actually like this a lot and would love a bee bottle, except for the $$$$$. For that much, I could by something that is very pretty and not boring at all…. (say, a bottle of Durga, or two bottles of Rose Vermeille, or half a gallon of Chasse au Papillions…)

I had to look it up, but that bottle is indeed gorgeous!

I love beautiful bottle design, and a nice bottle/presentation certainly attracts my attention, but it’ll never be the main reason for me to buy a scent.
I keep my collection in a closet, no showing off, not my style. And in the end I appreciate a good sprayer/and sturdy cap more than fancy patterns or golden flakes. Oooh this sounds soooo boring right? ;)

The price tag is kinda scary, but it’s not totally outrageous. According to the Guerlain French online shop: 225 euros for 125 ml, that’s like two 50 ml bottles of Serge Lutens (same price range actually when you calculate the juice per ml).

I appreciate a good sprayer as well and wish it was something manufacturers paid more attention to.

I have some vintage Chanel bottles that use propellant (rather than air pressure.) They are really fun to use. Does anyone know when they stopped using propellant? I’m assuming it was banned at some point.

Mon Precieux Nectar is so pretty. You smell great. I must take the parafilm off my decant (thanks, hajusuuri!) and start using it as the seasons slowly change.

I don’t let empty bottles hang around, but I love the Guerlain bee bottle so much that when I saw an empty one available for a pittance I was gobsmacked with gratitude and bought it in a hot minute.

      It is truly myyyyy precioussssssss.

She was a great lady, a great boss, a great city manager. Our small town wouldn’t be as happy and prosperous as it is without her. She committed 42 years to the city, eleven of them as city manager. She worked up until the last to make the city a better place to live.

Our 1.5″ of snow has largely melted, but school is closed today anyway, due to a wicked wind chill and the fact that in some of the more remote areas of the county, children are waiting in the cold for the bus. It’s pretty frigid.

The snow in my area turned to rain in the afternoon and then froze overnight. I almost slid under my car this morning trying to navigate the frozen bumpy lake that is my driveway. We did use our snowblower but the snow was too slushy to get it all. Our district had a delay but school is in session.

I tried the JM Myrrhe & Tonka yesterday, but only on a card, because I was wearing (yes!) Beloved. It’s a lovely perfume, heavy, slightly sweet, slightly spicy, very, very lightly medicinal. I’ve just sniffed the card again. I would also say it has phenomenal staying power. It really like it.

Today, I’m wearing Puredistance Antonia, which I meant to wear to bed last night, but I stupidly sprayed in the dark and wound up in Puredistance White. Not terrible, but not even close to matching my mood. Anyway, I’m enjoying the warm/cool spicy/green effect I’m getting from Antonia this morning.

Today’s SOTD is my Olfactic sample of Earth Mother. It’s not doing much for me. Love today’s image. We keep watching our recording of the Foo Fighters Austin City Limits as it features Gary Clark Jr. in an outstanding guitar solo. And my, doesn’t Jimmy Page look distinguished.

I went to the botanical gardens this morning, so no perfume. Highlight of the visit was the greenhouse with tropical plants and flowers. And it smells gorgeous in there. A warm and sweaty mashup of greens, flowers, woods, soil, dirt, animals (they have birds in some parts of the greenhouse).

On my way back I visited a perfume store and tried…Mon Guerlain, small spray on the back of my hand. Haha, all those comments yesterday after Robin’s review, I just had to!
I really tried to ‘get it’. But after 45 minutes I gave up. It was just too sweet and cloying and powdery for me. I ran into a L’Occitane store, washed my hands and sprayed on Cade edt. Now that is a scent I like!

    Also tried Egoiste this week.
All I get after 30-45 minutes is sour sweet candy (remind me a bit of those PEZ candies), with a hint of woods. :(
I expected something more from this, and woody+spicy is right up my alley. Also lot of likes and loves on Fragrantica. Is there something wrong with me?!

      I like Egoiste
Everyone skin is different and it’s all about trying different things, so nothing is wrong with you in my opinion.

I am not giving this one up, yet. Its not a dislike, and maybe I was just expecting too much. Next time I’ll use a bit more! Hopefully that helps to bring out the other notes.
I am always careful when testing something new. I once made the mistake of spraying on too much, it ended up being a big dislike. Its a mistake you only make once. :)

Current or vintage? Not sure if this one has been ruined by reform and fake sandalwood, but the old stuff was freaking marvelous.

I get lots of potent sandalwood all the way through with Egoiste. It’s not the Platinum version you tried? That’s the one I tried first and was sorely disappointed.

No it was not the platinum version.
The candy vibe disappeared after 4-5 hours and things got a little bit better and warmer, yes sandalwood appeared, not that pronounced though.
But I had only one spray, will try again and apply more :)

SOTD Nuit de Tuberose, such a fun and cheering scent. I paired it with a chunky cerise pink hand knitted chunky knit cardi- jacket, embroidered with leaves and flowers, in sea green, pale pink and yellow. It was a £5 bargain at a local charity shop that always makes me happy.
The pairing is a very cheerful one, and I feel a lot better then I did this morning. The sun is out, and the daffodils, crocus’s and primroses , and the winter flowering honeysuckle by my front door makes me swoon with pleasure, does anyone know of a perfume that smells similar?, thanks!

Thank you for this link- I don’t like to condemn an entire ingredient, because sometimes it depends on how it’s used. But , this is a great expansion of the explanation you gave me as to what I find distasteful in so many ” masculine” fragrances. There has to be some fragrance using DHM that isn’t loathsome.

Taking a break from RF-R perfumes today because I wanted to spray instead of dab. I have samples of Arquiste L’Etrog and Anima Dulcis but will use those in the evening. And my other two of his that I can spray are reserved for tomorrow and Friday. ????

Gazing at my new bottle of L’Heure de Nuit. I love the bee bottle design but I don’t know what I was expecting but for 4.2 ounces, the bottle doesn’t look like it is holding 4.2 ounces. I think because the bottle is round and not square makes it look smaller. Since I could get out of my driveway this morning I had to take a day off. Louve with traces of yesterday’s Mon Guerlain. Not too shabby. I was writing about the smells I remembered from my younger childhood yesterday and the one that still makes me gag is Veet. I think it is less offensive now than in the 60/70s but that smell of burnt and rotting baby lotion, and so strong it took over the whole house. There was something almost shameful about that smell. Anyway…Veet, Fenjal, Bronnley soaps, Tweed, Lavender talc and then a happy swing to Diorissimo ( phew).

I am going to re-try Mon Guerlain today. They are giving away a Mon Guerlain candle with purchase – so there’s that. I can’t understand how it takes no time for some perfumes to reach Dunedin (Poison Girl, Zadig&Voltaire, Mon Guerlain) and yet 18 months for others (Angel Muse) …and never ever for some. I think Mon Guerlain could be quite nice for autumn, a bit clear and sharp.

I awoke in the mood for Taklamakan again today and decided to go for it in spite of the warm day and supposedly scent-phobic coworker. So thankful I’m nicely scented under my scrubs because I’ve had to wrestle several very smelly animals so far today, one of which has thrown my back into a state of twinginess. My extra cup of coffee and nice smelling abdomen are all that are holding me together at the moment ;) I WILL buy a bottle of this stuff when my decant is gone.

I’ve been wearing fairly light scents all week, but today my hand landed on Penhaligon’s Night-Scented Stock. It is NOT light, and I think I overdid it, but I’m still enjoying it immensely. Look out, Tucson (to quote Romy and Michelle).

For those of you waiting on samples/decants from me (you know who you are :( ) I should have them out in the next couple days and apologize for the delay.

Came across this interesting article on Jo Malone’s nose being as keen as a dog’s…

My SOTD is Heeley’s Iris d’Noir…I wore it on Monday also. Yesterday our work closed due to the vicious ice storm we had. Today it is brutal out there. I went out to go to lunch and came right back as the wind nearly blow me away. Being home all day yesterday without even having to do household chores allowed me to spray on different perfumes at different times of the day. I must say Heeley’s Iris d’Noir is quite long-lasting.

Hello, all. I’m late (slept long again!) and very relaxed. (jeans and a shirt; no teaching today, and a short day at the office, then home to write a lecture), so I’m wearing Donna Karen Iris essence, part of the Black Cashmere family. It feels quiet and blue and casual, like my linen shirt. It’s nice for a change. It really says just one thing, and that rather softly, but it knows its own mind. Be well, all.

My SotD is a bit of an odd combo and I’m sure some of you will think I’m a blasphemer for this but I’m wearing some of a sample of Creed Spice and Wood over ELdO YES I DO. I had already put on YES I DO when I looked out the window and instantly decided that pretending it was spring just would not cut it.

I’m loving this combination, so I think I might be in the market for something 10 times cheaper that’ll do the same trick. (Maybe a travel spray of Commodity Leather?)

I only have one RF-R scent so I’m saving that for Friday. Today I decided to go with another rarely worn item, which is VC&A First EDT. I got it cheap at Ross a year or two ago. Aldehydes aren’t usually my style but there is a time and place for everything.

I have nothing by Flores-Roux, but on Friday I may need to stop at the shopping mall for a few things. Recently I think I saw a tester of Neroli Portofino at Sephora, perhaps it is still there.

Holy moly, I started the day waiting 45 minutes for my train. When it came, it was packed but I managed to get a standing spot. When we came to a major stop, the guy on the aisle seat got up and the woman sitting in the middle auickly slid over to the aisle seat. I thought she was going to get up so I asked if she was getting up. No response. I tapped her on the shoulders to ask if she was getting up. The response – slow down! Now, at this point, I probably could have gotten into a bitch-slap fight with her but SOTD Chanel No.19 EDP served as my spine stiffener and calming influence and I just waited for her to get up and slipped onto the middle seat. The guy sitting by the window said that the woman dropped her wallet. I passed along the message (nice of me, right? because I could easily have pretended not to hear the guy). She looked down and didn’t see it so I helped her (again, nice of me, right?) and pointed underneath the seat in front of us and sure enough it was her cell phone. At least she had the decency to thank me but little did she know that I was hoping her cell phone got damaged. Anyway, if I were Catholic, I would have had to confess. I have to thank No.19 for keeping me calm, cool and collected.

Work was super crazy and to top it all off, one of my two monitors is dying as I started seeing “pink snow” but I have had no time to deal with Tech Support.

    Tomorrow is another day!

I’m sampling Mon Guerlain today -it was just standing there at Sephora on my lunch break – and now I’m disappointed. I knew ofcourse that it’s not a parfumista favorite, but I like L’Instant, Champs Elysees and Shalimar Initial (and love a lot of the older gems also) so I had hopes. But it is just so thin! White musk over cake and that’s it! It reminds me of Balmain Extatic gold musk and the dry down of Jessica Simpson Fancy, which is the best scent of the three.
