Wednesday scent of the day 2/22

Posted by Robin on 22 February 2017 323 Comments

Comme des Garçons magazine advert

Happy Hump Day, and happy National Margarita Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Comme des Garçons Odeur 53 (which would go quite nicely with a margarita, by the way).

Reminder: on 2/24, wear a fragrance by Comme des Garçons, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

SotD: CdG Kyoto. I am getting over a nasty flu that has been creeping across the campus where I work, so this is my first scent in days. This might be my favorite of the incense series.

S(ip)otD: Finishing a sample of Ruhuna Low Country Ceylon from Upton.

Homemade scones this morning, my little monkey helped. I also made a fruit salad to eat with the scones: bananas, strawberries, and blueberries with a bit of honey and orange blossom water. The smell made me choose Feuilles D’Oranger as my SOTD.

I see that Mon Guerlain has been released to some stores, anyone tried it out yet?

I haven’t tried Mon Guerlain yet, but I really want to. I know it will take forever to come to my corner of the hinterland, if it comes at all, so I just may have to take myself on a field trip to the big city. 🙂

SOTD is Tauer Lonesome Rider. I got a sample in the mail from a generous NSTer and I am deeply in love. I look like a crazy person at work because I keep smelling myself but I cannot get over how much I love this….the spice and leather and smoke and rose. It’s one of the best things I’ve sampled lately and I may have to shell out for a FB because I will surely be depressed when the sample runs out! 😮

If you go to Andy Tauer’s website, there is what is called the explorer set. You choose 3 15ml perfumes. Granted is comes to the total of around $120 USD. The catch is if you live in the US, you do have to sign for it. I’m thinking of ordering directly from the Andy Tauer site again for that and the samples I got were phenomenal, they were not dabbers but 1.5ml sprays.

This is the first one I’ve sampled but like I said, I’m already LOVING this. Trying not to make a fool out of myself at work sniffing myself constantly. I also have a sample of Au Coeur du Desert I want to try tomorrow. I can also see my love wanting to steal my Lonesome Rider should I order it, because he loves pretty much any leather scent. He’s been rocking Tom Ford Tuscan Leather lately.

Not sure yet. I’m still trying out the edp, and honestly, I’m hoping to love it more than the edt, just because it’s the one currently in production. So far, it does feel a little softer and rounder in tone than the edt, and that appeals to me. So…we’ll see if that holds.

          22 February 2017 at 1:25 pm

Thanks for saying what you thought of the EdP! I keep wondering if I need it over the edt. Do you feel like it lasts longer? The longevity has been my issue…

I’d say yes, it has stuck around longer than the edt does on me. I just did a quick spritz from a sample at 5:00am, and I can still smell it at 2:15pm.

And SSS Champagne de Bois. I prefer it to BdI because the sandalwood is richer and it isn’t as sweet. The drydown of the sandalwood right on my skin is TDF.

Been too running around-y to post, but yesterday was Lumiere Noir pour Femme, last night Cuirs, and today Tobacco Rose. The sun has been out for three days in a row, so despite some work and world related drama, I’m energized.

On the Chanel discovery set, they did refund me and I did get the coffret! It’s wee and adorable and excellent sniffing, which will inevitable lead to further purchases, so I win and they do too.

    Happy Wednesday.

It’s kind of like the wild little sister who sneaks out at night. The Bois des Iles sister is the daydreaming bookworm. A little more clean cut.

SOTD is Comme des Garçons 888. I hardly ever wear it, but when I get it out to put it on, I really like it. It’s a strange one though. I don’t like to be unduly influenced by the name or package but it truly does smell metallic. I get some nice spices with nothing sticking out too much, and a good dose of geranium.

I have Incense: Avignon, Incense: Kyoto, Leaves: Tea, Leaves: Lily, Leaves: Mint, Play:Green, Sherbert: Peppermint, Red: Carnation, Luxe: Champaca, Undercover: Holygrapie and a sample of Dot to choose from for Friday.

Here are the notes from Fragrantica:
Top notes are coriander, tea, bergamot, cardamom and lemon; middle notes are peony, jasmine and neroli; base notes are sandalwood, tonka bean and vanilla.

On me, it opens with a bit of green and a little spiciness from the bergamot, cardamom and coriander. Neither green nor spice is sharp, just softly there. It moves into a nice black tea scent – it really smells like my cup of Yunnan tea – with a soft, generic floral in the background. Don’t let those floral notes scare you; they are very muted as is the Guerlain wood/tonka/vanilla drydown. Definitely not the “Guerlainade”. I usually wear this in the Summer and it’s not too sweet or gourmand for the heat.

This is dq’d but very cheap (perfume free!) on ebay – not because of quality I think, but because it was a limited edition in the first place and not many people even know it.

    SotD = Calligraphy Rose

I like it! The heart is tightly surrounded by other notes (resins, herbs, spice), but it is very recognizably a fragrant red rose. I’m sniffing CR spritzed from a manufacturer tester, with many thanks to a lovely NSTer.

I love rose in fragrance, but over the past year I’ve had difficulty with a few rose scents. They gave me a very particular migraine headache, the same headache I get from sulfa antibiotics and sulfate/sulfite additives in food. In a few hours I’ll know if CR is a headache-inducer or not. Perhaps a chemist would know if rose perfume molecules are based on sulphur. Or I may be sensitive for another reason. It’s a mystery. 8)

Damascones, one of the components of rose essential oil and an aroma-chemical isolated for use in perfumes, have been limited by IFRA. So perfumers are using other and/or additional aroma-chemicals to take the place of damascones, and to make up rose perfumes. You may be allergic to one of those newer ingredients.

Hope this helps but more importantly, I hope Calligraphy Rose doesn’t affect you. 🙂

Thank you for that insight, it makes sense. Newer rose fragrances are the ones I most often don’t get on with. I have an old-ish bottle of PW Tea Rose that I can wear without any difficulty (apart from smelling like a rose supernova), and I have a sample of Jo Malone Red Roses that is wonderful, too. Rose essential oil is gorgeous and headache-free. It’s all very interesting and makes me a bit more understanding of people who are fragrance-free for health reasons.

SOTD is Taklamakan, although I’m itching to whip out Cuir Cannage as there are some similarities in the opening to my nose. Cuir Cannage has that dolls-heady ylang ylang note, and Taklamakan has something like that going on despite having no ylang. I don’t recall this from previous testing. I think I will need to skip any other activities today and just park around smelling myself.

Wearing CdeG Black Pepper. Quite nice, but not that memorable, in my opinion. I’m dabbing from a sample, though, and I think it would be better sprayed.

I’ve tried it a few times as I read some positive reviews. The black pepper came on very strong for 30 minutes and then just faded. I thought it was interesting because I had to keep asking myself if I enjoyed smelling like I was sprinkled with pepper. And whenever I asked that question I got images of myself as a slab of steak on a plate. With eyes. Maybe it would have worked better if I was hungry?

    Wednesday!

    1) Went out last night to listen to a DJ set and do a bit of partying before Fat Tuesday. A couple of cocktails and some dancing- and OY, my body is like “okay, that’s enough!” Lots of water, and lots of cardio later on!

    2) Scent of the day: A mix of JM Red Roses and Molinard’s Jasmine.

Best of days to you, NST. I worked hard yesterday and got my case studies, lecture schedules and assessments set up, and today am working at home in a relaxed cloud of Fate. I usually wear this in cooler weather than Auckland is currently having, but I love it at all times. Today is very warm already, and the golden daffodils in the bottle seem to be blooming with extra sweetness; the tiny bit of green is even more thready than usual. In this weather, Fate has a different character: it’s a tutu, a frill of silk and lace, a satin ribbon. In cooler weather, it speaks more of the earth and air than the dressing room. Well, that is, these things seem so to me.

Teaching starts Monday. Ack! I have lectures to write. Double Ack!

I really enjoyed you’re description of fate, it sounds beautiful and interesting, like all my favourite Amouage perfumes.
I love Temp d’une Fete and Ostara for daffodils, I imagine Fate to be darker, would u say?

Not darker, exactly; more a different intensity of golden from the others. Definitely not as green as Temps dune Fete; “thicker” (that probably doesn’t make sense) than Ostara.

I’ve worn vintage Shalimar edc the past 2 nights. I’m not sure I knew they made a pdt – it’s one concentration I haven’t tried. I haven’t tried the vintage extrait, either, but that’s a road I really don’t need to go down…

I started down that road and ended up with more Shalimar than I’ll ever need. I think the PDT is from the 80s-early 90s after which they stopped making it. I think it’s somewhere between an edp and parfum or something. It was the concentration I liked best from what I had(edp, edt, edc).

SOTD is “Ignes” from Angela Ciampagna.

    To: no notes listed
Mid: tobacco, peru balsam, patchouli, labdanum and woody notes; Base: vetiver, sandalwood, musk and amber.

This one is very nice, varying between a tobacco-amber-smokiness at the start and now quieter with more patchouli in the dry down.

I’ve never come across Angela Ciampagna. From the website: “We are proud people, artisans by nature and nobles by heritage, we are of Christian upbringing and of pagan ancestry. We worship the fire of the Sacred Heart and that of the hearths and bonfires, we live among
prayers, rural rituals, monastic mysticism and familiar superstitions.”

Perfume by pagan nobles is definitely worth pursuing!

It always surprises me when you give and give to your job for so many years and as soon as you leave its like you don’t exist anymore. I left my job on good terms to be at home with my babies, and gave them 3 months notice, and never, not even once, has anyone reached out to me. Even just a friendly hello Those years of hard work, late hours, weekend work, didn’t in the end, mean anything to them, only me.
So, look our for yourself and take care of you and your family first.

That is traumatic. I’ve been the person who got the tap on the shoulder, and the person spared; neither is any fun.

Somewhat related: I am reading through “Reinvention Roadmap” by Liz Ryan, which is a great resource. Her point is that the old days of corporate loyalty are gone, and we owe it to ourselves to manage our careers. Because any of us can be in work one day and gone the next. Anyway the book is full of good ideas about being your true self and finding the job and culture that’s right for you, which I have found helpful.

SUN!! How peculiar! More rain forecast for the weekend, but we will ignore that today, lalalalalala…. it might even snow a little tonight, lalalalalala……

Been marooned on my mountain since Monday’s storm. There are rumors of roads semi-open, if you have a 4WD vehicle (I do). More rumors (definitely not fact, yet) of the power being restored today. Glad we have a generator. Splitmeet folks: I haven’t managed to get into town yet this week, am hoping I can put stuff in the mail tomorrow (fingers crossed).

No scent yet, will be sampling. I am making a big push to get thru my random samples, making good progress. Odd what a feeling of accomplishment that gives me 🙂

Teapot Thursday here. My husband’s new PhD student arrived from Iran yesterday and he kindly gave us a teapot and it is fantastic: gold and ruby decorated china with a portait of Nasser Al-Din, with matching tea stand. Best teapot in the world….just google image Nasser Al-Din teapot and you will get an idea. He also gave us a huge box of saffron and also some pitaschio sweets, like turkish delight. It’s so nice to have him here after so many months of waiting for a visa. He’ll be doing cancer research….but I intend asking him about roses, poor guy. Wearing Metaboles. Like it.

PdN Cuir Cuba doesn’t list coffee in the notes, but it smells like coffee to me.

Providence Perfume Co Samarinda is coffee + vanilla.

Richard Luscher Britos Columbia 04N 74W is mainly bitter coffee.

Sebastiane Espresso Royal is a hazelnut vanilla latte.

      Yohji Homme of course.

Bond No 9 New Haarlem is Kahlua.

By Kilian Intoxicated In the Addictive state of mind is another coffee/vanilla.

Demeter Black Russian is… guess what.

      Dior Eau Noire is coffe/licorice/lavender.

And Mugler A*Men Pure Coffee, that’s my favorite coffee scent. I’m sending you that one. 🙂

Another I’ve never heard of that looks so tempting, indie producer and doesn’t cost a million…

I’ve tried two or three of her perfumes, including Otis & Me. They are fun. Not super polished, but fun. I particularly liked the Otis & Me, which is why I mentioned it.

Cuir d’Ange for me today. CdG is sorely underrepresented in my collection (or, not at all really), so not sure I’m going to have anything for Friday unless I unearth a forgotten sample.

You smell great! To me, Cuir d’Ange is so particular that it could pass for an expensive CdG.

Absolue pour le Soir this morning. Rescue kitty has decided that despite her hatred of perfume, the benefits of sleeping on me outweigh the stink. She likes to wedge herself between the arm of the chair and my chest, pinning my left arm under her. Sweet, but she makes it difficult to type.

Ha, I am wearing Odeur 53 as well! (sort of) Today, I was in the mood for CdG Tea, but, since I have some meetings scheduled and Tea is not a soft-spoken fragrance, I decided on CdG Odeur 53 body cream which I wear as a hand cream. It works perfectly, even if the margarita association worries me now a bit … 53 used to be my signature for a very long (and happy) time, and is now my comfort scent — I imagine this can sound rather weird, but it really works that way for me; but maybe that’s what you meant by margarita, Robin?

    CdG has the best ads!

A belated hey to my twin! And you are lucky to have some Tea, it is so hard to come by now.

I don’t know what I meant, they just sounded good together!

And agree. I don’t know if it actually sold any perfume, but it’s really a fantastic ad.

I was glad that I got a back up bottle of Tea when they first discontinued Calamus and somebody wrote on-line that Tea will be next, but I wish I have Calamus as well ( my sister wore it back in the day and it would be nice to have a bottle for memory purposes).
And sorry about the stupid question; I was so excited to see that you are in Odeur 53 that I totally missed the margarita day info.

And I do have Calamus — although despite the opaque bottle, it does not smell quite as good as it did when I bought it.

And that makes sense now. I would never have put on Odeur 53 and thought oh, now I should have a margarita, but after seeing it was margarita day it did seem like a good match.

Yesterday afternoon I applied what turned out to be PLENTY of DSH’s Oeillets Rouges. I applied some of the voile to my hair… and felt sort of like a scene in “Honey I blew up the carnation!!!” Fortunately, I like carnation in perfume, but probably don’t need full on Oeillets Rouges in an FB.

Today I am testing Noel Enchante (also DSH), which I am really enjoying. Vaguely reminiscent of the scent of Pier 1 Imports back in the early 1970s. I loved the way the shop smelled then–incense and dusty pottery. I see why DSH named it as she did, but it the scent on its own doesn’t conjure Christmas for me.

It’s 77° now and forecasted to hit 80° later–perfect for my margarita(s) at dinner!

It was right next to the Shalimar on the shelf at Ulta, so how could I pass it up after your “tonkanilla” description yesterday? I have to admit I’ve never worn it before. I was surprised by how much the jasmine comes through compared to what it smells like just sniffing the bottle.

Yes, Shalimar. I’m in the Mexique version courtesy of a lovely NST’er. I needed a good blast after work (unable to wear any perfume to work). I’ve been assigned a new task this week and it’s a crazy amount of work just to learn it. I might need to wear this again tomorrow or possibly try the Dior Addict / Shalimar option as the week isn’t over yet!

Am in Esprit d’Oscar, which I hadn’t worn in a long time and had forgotten how much I love it. I do think it’s one of the most successful modern remakes/flankers of a classic fragrance. (And I imagine most fans of the original Oscar de la Renta would agree?) I smell divine but am about to dye my hair so we’ll see how it competes with the smell of peroxide – though I think we know which will be victorious.

I’d like to 2nd the gratitude of KellyC, and also send a thank you to Robin and her stable of writers who make this place possible!

I was thinking about your jasmine/corn grit comparison and did a little sniffing of the jasmines I have and think I get what you mean. I actually have more of an association with slightly rotting banana peels mixed with warm dried straw, but I can see that corn-y thing, especially in the absolute eo I have. I actually like that smell and prefer it to the greener, mothbally jasmine.

Yes Yes YES!!! Jasmine so often smells like over-boiled corn to me. Which is why I rarely like it. Glad to know I’m not the only one whose brain makes that connection.

Oh dear. Jasmine e.o. and in perfume is one of my favorite florals. I’m so glad that my brain *doesn’t* make that connection! (And I sure hope that I’m not susceptible to the power of suggestion!)

Oh, really? I’ve tested AG Le Jasmin a few times over the last week and got a distinct burning plastic smell from it last time. I guess that must have been from the jasmine and not something else.

Continuing my Month of Roses —

    SOTD = Caron Parfum Sacre

I am anosmic to something in the top notes because I sprayed and sprayed wondering why I am not smelling anything yet. Do you see where I am going with this? Thank goodness the atomizer spray was actually quite anemic but I was pretty sure that stuff was coming out! Whatever I ended up smelling was feminine and a melange of scents with nothing dominant. It’s possible my nose is broken.

I am looking forward to my SOTD tomorrow!

I’m checking in late after a busy dqy touring a school in San Diego. I’m super inspired after seeing amazing things in action and talking to some incredible teachers and students.

Yay for San Diego and yay for Do Son EDP! I wore that and the EDT a couple days ago and decided the EDP is superior.

I’m in San Diego…how long are you here for? The weather today, like so many days, was beautiful.

I’m here until Saturday. The weather here is lovely, and the landscape itself is magical. The Do Son seemed a perfect fit, and it was much more “me” than I was expecting, which was a nice surprise.
