Tuesday scent of the day 2/21

Posted by Robin on 21 February 2017 277 Comments

Bespoke Message Typewriter Teapot

Happy International Mother Language Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I went with Comme des Garçons + Monocle Scent Three: Sugi. Tea at the moment is Irish Breakfast from Upton.

Reminder: on 2/24, wear a fragrance by Comme des Garçons, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Bespoke Message Typewriter Teapot ("up to 30 words of your own choice") is $103 at the Carters of Suffolk shop at Etsy.

    That’s quite an elaborate teapot!

    I’m in L’ombre dans L’eau today.

The teapot cracked me up. My own teapots are pretty basic.

      You smell great!

Mine are very basic too. While I like the look of these more elaborate ones, all I can think is: how the heck do you clean that one properly!?

It’s very cute but I find decorative teapots are rarely very functional.

Back to work after a nice holiday weekend. I am in Bond No 9 So New York. Notes listed are cocoa, coffee, plum and patchouli. I just get some cocoa and patchouli. I was waiting anxiously for the coffee note to show up, but it never did. Very bland and boring with poor sillage and longevity. No more than 30 minutes on skin and clothes. I will finish now what is left of the sample and it will be forgotten forever. Except for Chinatown, New Haarlem and Fire Island I have never found another Bond No 9 that appeals to me. I have not been successful with this line. Not that I regret it, but I was having better expectations. I will finish the 4 samples left that in my set and will not try anything else from this line, unless they come up with something really good.

I have been generally underimpressed with the Bond No. 9 scents I’ve tried, except Broadway Nite.

I haven’t had much luck with Bond, either. There are also just way too many to try. I also like New Haarlem and Chinatown but rarely wear the small amounts I have. Queens was also kind of nice.

My local Nordstrom used to have a Bond No 9 section and I found it too overwhelming to even start to look at. Those overly busy bottles hurt my brain (plus they’re really unattractive for the most part.)

Apres l’Ondee, layered over a nice violet and oakmoss soap (hmmmm)

The Republic of Tea Grantham Breakfast Blend tea (black tea with ginger – buzz, buzz)

Petite Ecolier biscuits with extra dark chocolate on top (yum, yum, yum!)

At work today for lunch we have pizza and IT trivia – could be fun!

    What a teapot!

SOTD is Comme des Garçons Series 4 Cologne : Anbar. Basically it’s a classic cologne – citrus and lavender. Reminds me of Acqua di Parma Colonia. There is a strange note though – sort of spicy, sort of vegetal – I do not particularly like. But overall, not bad at all.

I’m giving Zoologist Beaver a try today. It doesn’t correspond to my olfactory image of said animal, since it’s topped by a gentle waft of linden blossom. I’m just not getting the musk, leather, wood, or castoreum notes. Maybe they’ll come later? Yesterday I wore Macaque and quite liked it, with its apple-y minty aspects, but despite a lot of spraying it would disappear after only an hour or so.

Im wearing Dark Amber & Ginger Lily By Jo Malone. Very nice but don’t need a full bottle.

Yes I have bought the entire set. It’s really fun to test them all. I love Civet and may spring for the FB. Hummingbird was way too sweet and floral for me, but Nightingale is quite nice. Bat is my second favorite, but like Macaque, it doesn’t last at all. Civet is very potent and long-lasting. Plus the little carded samples are truly adorable with their funny pictures and gold writing–the set is a treasure unto itself visually!

OMG, I want that teapot! We collect teapots and have them on the tops of the kitchen cupboards. Most of them are some sort of shape–roosters, elephants, a camel, houses, and a Royal Albert one shaped like a fireplace. We really don’t have room for more, but I could find a place for that typewriter. No SOTD yet. Will be contending with having the hubby and boys home for a teacher work day on what is usually my day off from the office and the time when I run errands, exercise, work on charts. Send me patience!

SOTD- Chanel 19 Poudre, suits the current weather and my mood. Last couple days were unusually warm for February in MI and I was trying to be outside with kids as much as possible.
So, my Chanel 19 Poudre sample is drained and I need to make a mental note to get a decant and set aside some bottles and decants for the following swapmeet in March. This will be my fun project. Cleaning out closets and sorting out the toys will be my meh project, but I am still looking forward to it as getting rid of the STUFF feels liberating and rewarding. :)

SOTD for me is Seville a l`Aube. I’ve yet to fully spray this one on, dabbing is all I can handle. Still, such a beautiful and complex scent.

COTW: Pink Pepper Thumbprint cookies! Really interesting these little gems are. The pink pepper (finally found at a reasonable price) is a smidgen spicy and fruity, and then there’s also white chocolate and strawberry jam in the center. I think these deserve 5 stars ;)

SOTD is Acqua di Parma Iris Nobile EDT, against last night’s bedtime Iris Nobile EDP. I might have fallen back in love with the EDP … or maybe it’s just a wintertime thing. Not that I’m not loving the EDT this morning – I am! It’s just the thing for the pouring rain we’re expecting today.

Oh, and Sugi is the only CdG I have left for this Friday’s theme (after the unfortunate carnation experience last week). I have yet to uncork my little sample of Sugi, but am looking forward to it now that I’ve been pointed at your review, Robin – thanks!

Ooh, tough question. During the summertime, the EDT wins hands-down. Otherwise, I think I have to give the edge to the EDP – it’s longer-lived and just slightly more interesting/challenging to wear.

I think it was my aversion to aldehydes that put me off since that’s their thing. I like them in the right combo and doses now. I still have a hard time with no 5 edp but love the EDT now.

Mohur edp today, from what’s left of my sample. Good stuff.

The hubs is applying for an Extension agent job on Kauai today… he doubts he’ll get it since he has no official experience with the Extension department, just some contacts and liaison work in the past. It’s a little bit of a stretch, but not a *wild* stretch given his experience in teaching agriculture and working in the industry. I’ll be totally shocked if he does get it, since that would mean packing us all up to move THAT FARRRR. Still. Kauai is beautiful, and Haunani lives there.

Yes I know someone who moved there to do law and social services on one of the little islands. But it proved too isolated for them They moved back to the mainland after two years.

It can be VERY isolating indeed, but many people do want that and lead productive happy lives there. I fell in love with a man who lived on the Big Island and although I loved the calm, the deep beauty and feeling the formation of Earth under my feet, I had to fly in and out for work in Oahu and everything i was used to was so darn pricey!

I can certainly see how that would be true. We visited there for an academic conference this past summer (and spent another week on the Big Island about ten years ago) and were surprised at how expensive everything was.

And getting back East for Christmas would be difficult, to say the least.

I’m wearing l’Eau de l’Artisan on one arm, Demeter Dandelion on the other. I’m rather suggestible today, as the green theme came up on another perfume blog this morning. Bulbs popping up and blooming crocus outside the back door (it’s WAY too early for that) had me primed for green!

SOTD is Art de Parfum “Signature Wild”.

    Top: cinnamon, artemisia and cardamom;
    Mid: orange blossom, dried fruits and woody notes;
Base: labdanum, leather, sandalwood, amber, peru balsam and vetiver.

I’m perplexed by this one. It opens quite complex, including a smell from my childhood, a water plant that grew in a stream behind our house and smelt of menthol and mud if you uprooted it. Maybe my nose is mistaking cardamom for menthol? Anyway, on my skin it all dies away quickly adn teh dry-down is pretty meh.

After yesterday’s perfume similarly disappeared I tried “V for men” from Clive Christian. A good perfume, somewhere between Armani “Bois d’Encens” and a more complex Amouage take on incense. Preposterously expensive though. :^)

I love them both, but I prefer the EDP. It is deeper and thicker to me than the EDT, though I do like that crispness of the EDT opening. I have a sample of a vintage cologne which is pretty fabulous too. I haven’t even tried any of the flankers, I should venture out I suppose. I just love the original so much that I am afraid the flankers will disappoint.

Shalimar is a go-to for me, too. I have some vintage edt, edp and the cologne, and I love the Souffle and Mexique flankers. I tend to wear the modern ones more, possibly out of habit, or possibly because they’re a bit easier to wear. The other flankers I did not love, but they’re still worth smelling, I think.

I will have to try that. Like I said above, I’ve been afraid to venture out to the flankers because I love the original so much. But I do love No. 5 Eau Premiere much better than the original, so I do know it’s possible to love a flanker. :)

Honestly, they both seem to last forever with me. I just love how “thick” the EDP is (I can’t think of a better word). But the EDT lasts a long time on me as well. I would love to try the parfum (I’ve only tried the edp, edt, and the cologne) but don’t have that kind of $ lol. The cologne did fade faster than the other two..

I was thinking either Zagorsk or Avignon today but both were too dry for my liking today. I decided on Epic again. Funny thing is that my mother found my Amouage sampler set and wore Beloved and really likes it. I think she stole it from me to try most of the line and she might ask for a full bottle of something for her birthday. Big Amex bill come May and I am already trembling along with Amex.

I had an interesting perfume conundrum before me today. I have a meeting a bit later that promises to be contentious, involving several organizations in addition to my own. Among those present will be my boss, a couple of people I’m on warm terms with, a guy who’s renowned for being an angry, abusive jerk when he doesn’t get his way (and the purpose of the meeting is to try and prevent him from getting his way), one very socially awkward person, and one person who I have rather a crush on. What, oh what, to smell like? It has to be professional, quiet, and not too “perfumey” (these are all outdoorsy types). It has to signal that I’m kind and benevolent but have a spine of steel and am not someone you want to cross. It has to be sexy without being vampy or indiscreet. It has to be Cuir de Russie!

Meeting was civil but almost completely unproductive. I’m sure everyone was too busy wondering who smelled so good to actually put their minds to solving the problem at hand.

Jo Malone’s Wood Sage & Sea Salt today. I blind bought a small bottle of this last fall, when it was still too hot for anything but a light cologne and I was heartily sick of all of my citrus options. I like this but don’t love it – the sage note is rather plasticky on me. However, I’m going through it at a rate that suggests there’s plenty of room in my collection for non-citrus colognes . . .

I bought a bottle of this just before Christmas, after hoarding a couple of samples, and I really like it. I spray it about an hour before I go to bed, and it’s very comforting.
I don’t get much sage from it at all; it’s just a nice, quiet little thing. I wish I was better at picking out individual notes!

Nearly all of the reviews/comments I’ve read are from people who also say this doesn’t smell like sage, so you are in good company! I find it to be a sweet-ish, slightly fruity (and a bit plasticky) version of the sagebrush smell that’s common here in the (American) Southwest. But not much like clary sage or food sage.

    Happy Tuesday, all!

    1) Boy, is it ever wet outside!

    2) I am a subscriber to Monocle, and so I love the Hinoki and Sugi scents. I have them in soap form!

    3) Am in a sample (from Essenza in Seattle’s Fremont neighborhood) of Kahina’s FEZ body serum. This is a lovely body oil, comprised of nearly 36% argan oil with a blend of other light plant oils, and with a deep earthy roses+patchouli+spices scent. It’s very refined boho chic- the skin is left very subtly soft and beautifully scented. Because I make my own body oil I cannot justified buying this at $98/6.7 ounces (and even then I will say this: I have no idea how the makers have a margin, given the high quality of plant based ingredients)

Fortunately, Kahina FEZ does come in a roller scent, so I would be willing to spring for that!

Okay, here is the time on sprockets where we do a comparison:

    1) Lubin Black Jade is a sheer rose with spices, grounded with neroli and patchouli. This becomes a lovely skin scent over time- like being freshly showered with fresh roses, their leaves and powdery cinnamon.

    2) Aromatics in White is a very rich rose combined with spices, amber and powder. This is the more refined sister of Aromatics, the one who does not smoke Cannabis. Turns into a rich rose/spice powder.

    3) Kahina’s FEZ is a very rich hippie/boho rose combined with patchouli and geranium. This stays close to the skin BUT a breeze will pick this up if you are using the body oil. The roller scent will be more personal. This is quite straightforward and linear- all you will have is the very best rosy/earthy warm aura of a scent.

So, it seems that I like roses+spices, but depending on the maker, it can take different turns!

There is a sweetness in Black Jade but on me it settles down and becomes just lovely and very fresh.

Honestly though- I find it interesting that the scents I have tried recently has roses+spices!

Testing DSH’s Albino today. When first applied it smelled like the orange cream filling you get in some milk chocolate bonbons, but is now a drier, almost pithy citrus. I drained my little dauber reapplying the perfume three times just this morning. While this is fun scent, and delightfully unexpected, I would need to douse myself in it to get satisfaction on regular wearing.

That’s an interesting question. In my mind, most scents are fairly unisex. The exceptions being those with loads of aldehydes or super sweet pink synthetic things that feel like they would be just wrong on a man, and equally, those barbershop fougeres that just say “man” to me… This scent goes on tipping towards the feminine I think, with the gourmand (to me!) creamy orange/white chocolate start, and then dries down to a pithier, drier, grapefruit scent, but still there is a creaminess in the background… This is my rambling way of saying that the scent is not a girly scent at all, but it doesn’t smell “masculine” to me in the sense that someone catching a whiff would wonder which man in the room was wearing cologne.

        Hah! Not very helpful!! Sorry.

That is helpful! The DSH website describes it as “fougere” and you talked about “orange cream filling in bonbons” so I was curious.

p.s. Hope it is not too rainy today in your part of California!

should have made more clear that for me if something is labelled as fougere it usually means that I won’t like it (even if I think of myself as someone who prefers unisex fragrances)

            21 February 2017 at 3:23 pm

I’m like you, many fragrances labeled as fougeres do not work for me–actually, I don’t love them all that much on men either. But this scent is not a an after-shave style “fougere”–despite that word being applied to it in DSH’s description.

Best Tea Pot Ever! Today is cool and rainy, for my day off. I’m wearing Fever Delicieuse, a sample from a generous NST friend. I love this perfume so much. I’m allowing myself one special bottle to get with my tax refund. This is at the top of my list. Unfortunately, it’s also the priciest on my list. Second on my list is Atelier Camilla Intrepide. Very good morning, all. I’m flitting off to work in happy anticipation today–I’ve set up my day to sit in my office and let my imagination run (fairly) free as I write a case study for my Year 3 students. I will create an organisation with a cast of characters, variously wicked, misguided or talented-but-flawed, around whom we will base the weekly lecture topics. I always have fun with this sort of thing. I ‘Ve done enough different jobs in my happily mis-spent life to have had a wide range of good and bad work experiences and drawing on some to build rather gothic stories is amusing. The students seem quite entertained too, so we’re all happy. I’m wearing gorgeous girly Misia to help me along…..for this enterprise, I wish I smoked cheroots, but don’t ask me to explain that, because I couldn’t. I haven’t ever smoked, hate the smell of smoke with a passion, and of course, couldn’t light up anywhere on uni grounds these days anyway because we are a smoke-free zone. But still, I have this mad urge to sit in my office wearing black lace (I have a black lace T-shirt; I’ll wear it) and scarlet lipstick and Misia, with an elegant plume of smoke curling up from a thin cheroot…

Ummmm– I’ve come back to earth again now.

SOTD is nothing but living vicariously through everyone else’s perfume choice. I had a really bad cold or flu last week, and am still recovering. I am super sensitive to smells right now – I was just at the grocery store and it seemed like every time I turned around there was another strong unpleasant smell. I want to wear perfume but am to scared – a few days ago I put on some strongly scented body lotion after a shower and it overwhelmed me all day.

A few weeks ago I had cold/flu congestion and had to stop wearing fragrance for a bit. It seemed that when I spritzed on perfume it was harder to breathe and I would cough, cough, cough. When I felt recovered I started with the tiniest spritzes of my lightest scents and they seemed loud. It was as if I had hit the reset button on my nose.

SOTD = Elie Saab L’eau Couture. I dug this out last night after reading the Couture and the original Le Parfum reviews here. I’ve been living in oud/sandalwood/vanilla fragrances this winter, so Couture was rather ‘green’ smelling at first. It’s settled down nicely now.

Does anyone else have issues with migrating to new fragrances with the change in seasons, or is it always a welcome change?

I always look forward to it so I usually jump the gun and move to the next season long before the weather has. Weather like the kind we’ve had this week where I am – mild but still cold; grey and overcast and no longer winter but not yet spring – can cause a conundrum. I pulled out some spring florals but they’re not really what I want to wear, nor are cozy winter scents…

Funny, I was prowling ebay yesterday and saw an electric typewriter for sale for around $150, and wondered if that’s really what people will pay for one. (I’m sure there are collectors who pay much more for certain models – I don’t know what kind this was.) Then I had to wonder what it would cost to ship one. A fortune, no? Those things weighed a ton.

I’m not looking for one – I was perfume shopping and the seller I bought a bottle from had one for sale. I’m sure used office supply stores have scads of them – I know I’ve driven past lots of them being displayed in windows. But, ya, the price seemed a little steep to me.

I’ve been sampling white floral chypres today, Ella this morning, and SSS Jour Ensoleil this afternoon, verdict; both beautiful, Jour Ensoleil had the edge for me, as I love the herbal, targeted/marigold smell of the opening notes, but I don’t think I ‘need’ a FB of either, I’m definitely going to explore this category in more depth, I still haven’t tried PDN’s Odalisque, which I think maybe in this category. Any other suggestions most welcome!

I’m in Dame Sky Father again today. I really like it… easy to wear.

Wearing Neela Vermiere Rehele today. Trying to keep calm at work while dealing with insurance companies due to an accident last week. I was stopped in traffic with cars in front and in back plus on the side when a guy got into his flat bed company truck (which was parked front faced to the curb in front of a building) and started backing out without even looking. I laid on the horn but he kept coming and destroyed the entire passenger side. I knew I was going to be hit and couldn’t go anywhere nor do anything about it. The passenger side windows shattered into thousands of pieces getting into my hair and clothes and even into my closed purse. Glass was everywhere. The guy apologized, called the cops and took full blame. Unfortunately, my troubles were just beginning. My insurance is paying for my car to get fixed but then will collect from his insurance if and when they actually commit. In the interim, they are trying to fix it at the most minimum costs possible which will leave the car not even remotely looking like it once did before the accident. I have been driving a rental for a week and it will be over another week before the car will be fixed. Insurance companies have no problem taking your payments year after year during your lifetime (I have had this insurance company since I started driving), but when you actually need them, they try to nickel and dime you.

That is a massive and horrible bummer. Hope it gets repaired back to its prior state in the end. I called my auto insurance company a few years ago to adjust my policy and the agent kept repeating “yes, but if you make a claim we will drop you” to every question I asked. It’s a f*ing racket, insurance is. Sorry you’re having to deal with this.

I loathe dealing with insurance companies for this reason. If the car is not fixed properly I would file a complaint with your state insurance commissioner. My sympathies to you.

This sounds terrifying Filomena, even before the annoyance of rapacious insurers. I am glad that you weren’t hurt!

In some ways, it would have been better if the car was totalled but that would hqve meant a greater probability of you getting hurt worse than fhe glass debris. I was lucky to have coverage through USAA which is normally for military or honourably discharged military; there was a year when members could recommend friends and I took full advantage of it.

So sorry to hear about your insurance woes, and the scary incident which caused it all. Tenacity is needed in spades when you are dealing with all that. Best of luck.

    That teapot is the coolest!

Today I’m trying SL Gris Clair. Something weird and unpleasant happened the first few moments after I dabbed it on: underneath the lavender, what I smelled was a mix of sweetness and fishiness! The fishy aspect was reminiscent of the smell emitted by evaporative coolers when they haven’t been run for a while. (I wonder if those are used anywhere anymore?) Anyway, it all eventually settled down, and it smells good.

You were very patient with it…if I don’t like the opening of a perfume, it usually ends up in my perfume doghouse and forgotten.

Well, like I said, it was only a few minutes, immediately after applying, so I was trying to figure out if there was something wrong with the juice or something on my skin or what. Plus, it was only with my nose pressed up close. And then, thankfully, it passed. I’m intrigued to see if it happens again, but I really hope it doesn’t!

Today I’m trying Frederic Malle Vetiver Extraordinaire for the first time. My cat was friendlier than usual after I put it on this morning, so I guess it gets two paws up!

I didn’t even realize that today’s picture was a teapot as first! That is amazing.

Posting kind of late due due to a dentist appointment earlier this afternoon. I now have 2 new fillings and am shaking off the last lingering bits of Novocaine. Diving into the sample stash again for today’s SOTD, Atelier Cologne’s Oud Saphir. Smells like fruity pipe tobacco to me.

Wearing a sample of Néroli Outrenoir but not liking it. Going to have a wash and put on some Tauer Vanilla Flash instead.

I’d love to hear your impression of NO. I haven’t tried it, and as a Guerlain fan, I’ve been tempted.

Commando today, but why? Don’t know, it just happens sometimes.

Everybody say it with me now, “Ouarzazate!” Not wearing the CDG scent, but I did hear mention of the place on the radio today. I listened intently in case perfume was mentioned. It was not.

The still-growing solar farm is now so big it’s visible from space. Don’t think it can be smelled from that high up though. :)
