Wednesday scent of the day 2/1

Posted by Robin on 1 February 2017 290 Comments

Tonymoly Pocket Bunny Perfume Bar

Rabbit rabbit rabbit! Goodbye and good riddance to January. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Luctor et Emergo by The People of the Labyrinths.

Reminder: 2/3 will be Lemming Friday — you acquired a sample because you kept hearing about it (here or elsewhere), now you think you might just have to buy the bottle. A variation on a theme suggested by SheriG.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Tonymoly Pocket Bunny Perfume Bar, with three 9g solids in Bebe Bunny, Juicy Bunny and Bloom Bunny) is around $18 at Amazon.

I am wearing some of the last bit of Balenciaga Le Dix that I bought several years ago off ebay. I had read someone comment on NST about it having a note I liked. Great find, maybe a little dated but so am I these days. Wish I could find some bath things scented like this. By the way (dating myself as “not” the current generation) if you are at Peets, Starbucks, or the like and decide to watch TV on your iphone, use earphones for heavens sake!!! ok, smelling in my perfume and trying to calm down…

U smell wonderful, I’ve got a little vintage bottle of La Dix too, it’s so nice in cold weather, a bit too powdery in warmer weather for me tho, I do like powder, but I think it feels a bit too stuffy.

      2) People who use their mobile devices without earphones get an EARFUL from me. Seriously, people.

Here here! Worst example of this was one evening my son and I were in the waiting room (for four hours!) of a veterinary emergency room with our cat who had been bested in a fight and needed stitches. The place was packed with people and animals, harsh overhead lights beaming down on old ladies clutching asthmatic terriers, two huge bikers and their mom with a dog bleeding profusely, a sobbing group of children, hipsters with their well-behaved labs and too loud voices, and one guy watching violent, shoot ’em up shows one after the other on his phone at TOP volume (w a little dog tucked inside his jacket the whole time).

You would be surprised how many people we have to tell this to at the library. True, we don’t shush people anymore. But come on. You don’t play your device out loud at the LIBRARY of all places!

I second- or third?- that Luna Green! I sub and I’m amazed when folks watch things on high or listen to music, their books or podcasts on high. Yep, some customs have changed. Being polite about your noise is still an appreciated custom.
        Le Dix sounds very nice

You smell warm and lovely. I have a sample of Luctor et Emergo somewhere. I’m inspired to pull it out for a sniff.

Today I’m wearing Adjatay by The Different Company. I bought a FB in Paris last spring, then changed my mind about it and sold it. Later, I went and bought another sample and I remembered why I bought it in the first place. I find it edgy and sexy. Not sure I want another FB, but at least a decant for sure.

How’s the leather? Soft or strong?

I’d say strong, but not stronger than the tuberose. It feels equally floral and leathery to me. Many tuberose-centric fragrances are more tuberose than I want for extended periods of time, but the leather note here is exactly the right thing to make me love this one.

Ohh – I have one of those bunny minis. The holder is adorable, but the Bloom scent is a horrid, ptrochemical mess on me. I did remember about “Rabit * 3” this morning though.

Today, I am wearing Dior’s Miss Dior Cherie EDP (200?) from a coffret of minis that I bought at duty free in Paris on my very 1st European jaunt ( 2010).
This version is heavy on the rose, oakmoss and patchouli, and reminds me of my Mother, as that trip was to scatter her ashes in Paris – she never got to make the trip, so I took her after her passing.

Sunny and very humid here today so I’m wearing Un Jardin sur le Toit. I wasn’t so sure about this when I got it but it’s really grown on me, enough to move to a comfortable 3rd on the Jardin scale, some days even an even 2nd! :)

What are number 1 and the other number 2? By the way, I bought an Essano rosehip with pomegranate body oil and it is really good for turning lizard legs into silk stocking legs. I’m not sure if the scent reminds me of anything, though.

Sur le Nil, Apres la Mousson, Sur le toit, mediterraneo, Monsieur Li. :)
Kanuka I did have a sneaky sniff of some of the other products but only the body lotion has that smell. It isn’t rosey, it’s a bit pink but not too girly or sugar sweet, and yes, sooo reminiscent of something! Really nice product too.

Definitely one I could see qualifying for me in lemming territory. I have samples and love it. Spritzed it on in Duty Free before my flight last week.

I don’t know if this counts as a lemming or not, but right after I read about L’orpheline when it was released it seemed a lot of people liked it and so I got a sample and LOVED it, but waited until nearly two years later when finances finally allowed for me to get a bottle (discounted). Since then I’ve read that it’s more of a love it/hate it scent and most people tend to be put off by the cream/incense mix. I still love it though and am wearing that today.

Those bunnies!!!! Those are so cute. I’ve got the Tonymoly rice toner and love it.

January it will nice to see the back side of you

Lemming: Cristalle EDT from my scarf I sprayed yesterday while being out & about.

Cristalle EDT and I have a history. It was the first perfume bottle I ever purchase when I was young. I saved my money and it costs me 37 bucks.
I awhile ago I was gifted a bottle of the EDP and it just wasn’t the same so I passed it on to someone who liked that version.
Smelling the EDT on my scarf really has me wanting another bottle. Or at least a small sample or decant to spray on myself when I was to remember that specific time in my life. I am thinking about the swap meet and maybe I can get lucky. We shall see. Trying hard not to buy this year. anyone want to part with theirs let me know

I wish I had known, shopgoodwill.com had two bottles of Cristalle end yesterday. Goodwill stores all over the US sell the perfume and jewelry and stuff in online auctions and I have seen some surprising finds – Theorama, a sealed box of Hypnotic Poison, lots of Chanel No 5, etc. It’s worth a look if you are so inclined. I’m not shopping much this year and I keep seeing things that I want some perfume lover to get so I can shop vicariously!

If it makes you feel any better, I had bottles of both the modern (brushed gold box) and vintage extrait, and side by side to my nose they were very, very similar. Not enough difference to quibble about. I had read quite a lot about how the greens on top had changed in the newer versions, but I didn’t find that. Both are beautiful!

Finishing my sample of Smell Bent She Wolf. The first time that I wore it I found it very sweet and clogging. Today, for my surprise I am enjoying it. Pretty woody vanilla scent with the cedar and musk notes nicely blended. Easy to wear and it looks that it will stay on me the whole day. I would not get a full bottle, but probably a travel sprays or roll-on.

I think the trick with Lighthouse is to read it all in one go. Or as much of it as you can. The book teaches you how to read it, but if you break up the lessons they don’t “take.” At least, that was my experience.

I’m wearing SL Feminite du Bois combined with remnants of vintage Opium left on my red wool sweater from the last time I wore it (to a Chinese New Years party). At first all I could smell was the newly sprayed FdB, but now the Opium is taking over.

Yesterday’s NST review reminded me of the Guerlain Les Desert’s d”Orient and I decided to wear Songe d’un Bois d’Ete. It is a wonderful Guerlain Oriental with oud and a bit of leather. It has just enough cumin to give it a little edge. One of my favorite Guerlains (along with the other two in the collection) in years. It is too bad that they were in such limited distribution.

S(ip)otD: MF American Breakfast Tea for that malty, cocoa warmth.

I’m starting the day much earlier than normal and out of sorts. I’m in PST btw. My cell phone had a clock malfunction, and my alarm on it went off at 4 rather than 6. I noticed the real time showing on my clock across the room and went in the living room and kitchen to confirm it was really 4. Got back in bed grumbling and had my SO set his phone to 6 for me. THEN the alarm on his phone went off at 5 instead of 6 because he didn’t realize his phone had the same error. Of course at that point I was really frustrated and couldn’t get back to sleep no matter how tired I felt. My body, in all the confusion, was not letting me get more sleep. So I gave in and got out of bed at 5:25. Sigh.

No perfume picked out yet. Will report back once I’m scented.

The current version of the EDT is weak, watery, not worth trying. Seek out a vintage bottle (look for a clear, slightly curvy bottle, not the columnar “refill” bottle).

SOTD Is my beautiful brand new Histoires de Parfum Moulin Rouge, the lemming was created about 8 months ago by a lovely perfume fairy here on NST, who generously sent me some of her favourites, many have turned into my favourites as well (Journey woman, Heure Exquise, Misia edt, Ostara and Cristalle edt (I plan to get the latter in the spring).
I’ve been smelling the empty sample vial for such a long time, it feels so wonderful to be finally wearing it today!

Oh I also wanted to mention my other lovely new thing, I met up with my brother, his family and my sister last Saturday at The London Transport Museum (brilliant for small and older children, highly recommended) , and my sister gave me my Christmas present (I haven’t seen her in a while) a gorgeous 1940’s brown Bessie teapot, with flowers, and a lovely very 1930’s criss-cross design on both sides, and a really lovely curved spout!
I’d got her a rather lovely 1920’s/30’s compact, with an unusual oriental design on it in beautiful pastel colours in an octagon shape. I found it at my local market for £10, reduced as near closing time.We were both very pleased with our gifts, definitely worth the wait!

I never managed to go in the museum itself, but I did spend some time looking through the reproduction posters in the shop on several occasions. So cool!

My heating system broke sometime during the night- if I say rabbit rabbit rabbit now, does it count? Luckily, I have a service call scheduled later today because the thermostat hadn’t been programming properly. It’s going up to 48 degrees today, but colder tomorrow. The oven is doing double duty right now!!

I’m wearing Alahiiiine. It’s a yummy and warm lemming scent. It raises the ambient temperature a degree or two because of the heat radiated during repeated wrist sniffing.

I’m wearing Kyoto today…and painting again *sigh* but the end of my home renovations are finally in sight. Eight more weeks if everyone keeps to the plan.

I’d guess that fully half of my perfumes came from someone here mentioning them–I know Kyoto did, and Theorema, Alahine, California Reverie, Box of Eels, Ashoka and Bombay Bling, Cuir d’Lancome, Bronze Goddess, Infusion d’Iris and the Absolue, and a bunch more I can’t recall at the moment. For Friday, there’s nothing I’ve read about here and sampled that’s waiting for a FB purchase so I’ll wear something I’ve already bought. A sample of Mohur extrait is in my Luckyscent cart and might be the next bottle if I like it.

NST is the number one place where I find out about new perfumes, so I could go on with this week’s project forever. Wearing Falling Trees today because it’s so nice, but I’ll be joining after I shower, with Fille en Aiguilles. When I first discovered perfume blogs, and before I found decant retailers such as Surrender to Chance, Serge Lutens was a lemming so strong it almost hurt. Have never seen a bell jar in person, but at least I have my little purple box filled with SL decants and samples, and that makes me a happy, very happy gal.

I’m sure you will rock the defense. Please tell us how it went, I’m rooting for you from another hemisphere. As for the perfume, my suggestion would be something classic and structured that makes you feel like a you’re the boss, such as No 19, Cambon, Mitsouko, Amouage Jubilation 25 or even Guérlain Vétiver. These, I believe, project a confident image and never fail to reassure me.

Something quiet and close to skin? Just a wisp. You want others to listen to what you have to say, and not to wonder what on earth you’ve been thinking while putting on “that awful smell” (unless, of course, you know that everybody you’re going to see there love perfumes).
      Good Luck!

I think that my father must have really liked perfume though we never talked about it. I just took it for granted that he always smelled good. The scents i associate with him are Eau Sauvage , Van Cleef & Arpels Tsar (and Pour Homme), Ted Lapidus from the 70-80s, and a lot of colognes with ‘French fern’ …he really loved fern. I hadn’t made the connection before but I’ve just realised that my love of walking through fern and bracken may actually be connected to him. He was so wonderful, my best friend.

      Memories!

I wore black slacks, a white button-down shirt and a black blazer. I was told by one of my friends (after the defense) that I looked like a sommelier. However, I would love to be a sommelier, so I didn’t care.

Fragrance? I wore deodorant and cigarette smoke. This was before I could afford perfume. I suggest you wear something that has a slightly cold vibe, to encourage quickness of thought and stiffness of spine.

You are going to do an amazing job tomorrow! Breathe, and do try to savor the moment a little bit – it is something that’s been looming for so long, and after tomorrow, it will be in your rear-view mirror.

SOTD is vintage body cream of Cassini by Oleg Cassini. It has this massive vintage, classic lady type whollop of jasmine (with indoles), tuberose, oakmoss, vetiver, and civet, and everything else in the kitchen…. It has really creamy base notes that last forever. Like a “wet” version of Beloved. Sometimes I just want this type of complex fragrance. It makes me stand up straight!

I have a nasty sore throat, so I’m comforting myself with some Avon Cotillion. One of my grandmothers and several of my great-aunts were (and are) very fond of the old Avon scents, so they bring back fond memories. I’m not sure of the notes, but it’s a spicy floral and I’m getting whiffs of carnation and the drydown has something faintly chypre-ish about it before it finally turns soft and powdery. Some of the Avon perfumes smell kind of thin and cheap but this one has more depth than I expected.

Ooooh, you smell very nice. Hope the throat is better quickly.

I remember some of the Avon fragrances from years ago were wonderful. My great-aunt bought them just for the bottles and gave them to my grandmother to use up and then return empty. I had lots of perfume to play with when I visited Grandma’s house.

I tried the EDP and I enjoyed it! Its not as “voluptuous” as the parfum I have from the 90’s but the dry down on me was the same. I tested them both on each arm. Staying power was good

Couldn’t be wearing a more lemming scent. Second time trying Civet, this time more judiciously applied. I was tempted by Lucas and Undina to undertake a rose month, but think I need a comfort/cozy month in fact. So, I am off to the proverbial races in Civet and a thick soft sweater. My month of cozy has begun.

Was hunting for a St. Christopher icon this AM in my tchotchke drawer (I am Jewish so don’t generally have them lying around but thought I might have picked one up somewhere!!). I will have get one. Thinking of the story of the patron saint of travelers carrying the nameless baby tucked inside his cloak to safety across rough waters… Safe travels to everyone, your family, friends and colleagues.

The St. Christopher thought is a tender one. Today is St. Brigid’s day, too: patroness of babies, travelers on the water, and the poor (among others), in case anyone has one of her medals around.

Month of cozy is a good idea too. My only conflict with the month of roses was that February is still a good month to wear my “winter” perfumes, so by switching to less winter-y roses I shorten an already short period that can be kind of considered a colder season in our area. But I’ll try to add some of my ambers and heavier orientals to those evenings when I wear during the day rose perfumes that do not stay on my skin through the day.

There are two reviews for it on Luckyscent…the latter says it smells strongly of creosote….which is smokey I assume and maybe I am attributing it as patchouli when in fact it is creosote.

Hello, all. I’m late today, because I have been battling with a mis-behaving website. I want to buy some underwear, and you’d think they’d want to take my money, but do you think I can get to the checkout? I cannot! Beastly botheration! And in my distracted frustration, I’ve just absent-mindedly sprayed myself with En Passant for what I realise is the second time. I smell like a whole lilac tree in full flower, but there are far worse things to smell of, so that’s all right. Also, I’m scurrilously skiving off work today. I’m not sick, but I do seem to be exhausted, and I seem to be trembly and even a bit weepy, which is deeply peculiar. I can’t remember the last time I had nerves speaking to a group of people, yet yesterday, when all I had to do was adddress my colleagues, for goodness sake, my heart thumped and my hands shook. Weird! So I might yet have a third go at EP during the day….be well and stay beautifully fragrant, NST. How we enhance the world, no?

SOTD is D.S. & Durgo “Pale grey mountain, small black lake”.

    Top: oak moss, water notes;
    Mid: heather, water pepper, violet, blackberry and beech;
    Base: water notes and pigweed.

This scent reminds me of the West of Ireland where I grew up in a landscape very similar to the inspiration of this perfume. Google ‘Connemara landscape’ and you will see the grey or mauve mountains, black lakes, orange and brown grass and white sky. (The photos of blue skies are, well, not lies exactly but infrequent events). Tourists love it but it makes my skin crawl – I can almost taste the desolation when I look at those views.

I just did. I’d be one of those annoying, doting tourists, Koenigsburg. I think it’s very beautiful and now I hope some day to visit there.

My home region, Northland (Te Tai Tokerau) has two personalities. The east coast is all pretty bays with soft sand and blue water, and in summer, pohutukawa lean out and drip scarlet flowers into the air. The west coast is wilder: long, long beaches in brown and grey, windy and –at least when I was young–lonely. I prefer the west coast. Your Connemara puts me in mind of the spirit of the west coast of home.

I only appreciate desolation in books or films. The real thing, not so much. You would probably like the way that rhododendrons, fuschias and montbretia (crocosmia) grow wild, as the Gulf Stream keeps coastal areas above freezing in Winter.

A very distinctive (but disappearing) smell in the West of Ireland is a turf fire. One of those smells that can make you happy and wistful at the same time. To sit in an old-fashioned house with a mechanical wall clock tick-tocking away, and the warmth of a turf fire glowing and sighing gently to itself, is to step outside of Time.

Ten years ago or so, TOMK and I went island hopping in Cabo Verde. We drove down the East coast of Santiago island, which is a serrated series of headlands and bays. Out on the headlands was uncannily like Connemara, but then the road would come back into the inlets where there were bananas & mangoes and beaches of black sand, all of which are ‘wrong’. Very strange juxtaposition for us! :^)

I love this perfume and pictures of the landscape are beautiful, but I can also feel the desolation in the photographs and could never imagine happily live in that terrain. Frankly, if I’m far from an ocean, I feel landlocked and slightly panicked, even if I can’t see it in any regular way. It’s the air and the sky I guess. But of course others rightly find the ocean terrifying.

But no, how silly of me. Of course Connemara is practically in the ocean. So perhaps I’d love it there! I love Cornwall, which could be seen as desolate and yet to me is beautiful. Yet would I want to live there? The sad truth is I need a *city* near the ocean.

West of Ireland is quite similar to Cornwall, although with (even) worse weather. The coast road near Letterfrack runs along causeways and islands, half in and half out of the sea. If I were a millionaire that’s where I’d have a Summer cottage. Intolerable to live there full time as the damp and drear and isolation would get to me.

I miss the sea – where I live in England is very nearly as far from the sea as it’s possible to get. And being by the sea is a part of the charm of Malaga. Although if you wanted a big city, Barcelona might be better. :^)

I’m wearing Rose 31 today. Rose perfumes and I have a complicated relationship, because I worked in rose greenhouses for so long. I like this one a lot however – it smells like an abstract rose. Possibly in a sauna.

I like this perfume but I wish they had something like a travel spray or a mini bottle: I’d love to wear it from time to time but I just don’t need a large bottle of that scent.

SOTD is Boy Chanel. My sample arrived last week and I enjoyed it over the weekend as well. My verdict is that it is really nice, but fades too quickly for me to justify that price.

One of my few and favourite combos, Ancient Resins oil with a couple of (decant-sized) spritzes of Dries van Noten. I probably have to get a FB of Ancient Resins again, but I can probably coast on my decant for the other…

I woke up this morning with a headache, which I’m finding hard not to take as an omen for a subpar month ahead.

However, I feel better now and am enjoying sniffing the powdery beauty of L’Heure Bleue. Guerlain to the rescue!

Ouch, sorry about the sore head. It will be better soon because “Guerlain to the rescue!” I want that phrase on a t-shirt.

I had a headache last night and reached for Après L’Ondée. Great minds and all that. :)

Enjoyed a morning with jasmine tea which made me crave Jour d’Hermès Gardénia, which for me falls into the “charming” perfume category. Got dressed and decanted some K de Krizia, which I’m wearing now. Gorgeous stuff. I should wear it more often.

My H got home early from work and wanted to be scented (a very rare request.) I gave him some Aramis Calligraphy Rose to try and it smells freaking gorgeous on him. It doesn’t work on me and was also too masculine for my tastes. There are probably lots of things I pass on that would wear better on him if he were up to it.

    Happy hump day, all!

I just picked a scent for the day at 4:00 pm PST. Diptyque’s Eau Duelle edt. Definitely not “for me”–I smell like a boozy ice cream sundae!

The little Cafe in the small town in Northern Wyoming that was the closest outpost of civilization to my family ranch was run by Basque people. They served a sundae of vanilla ice cream with heavy sweet port wine for a sauce, which according to the internet, is a Basque thing. I always thought it was a Wyoming thing. It was a special treat for my sibs and me. Boozy ice cream sundae sounds great!

I wore Sultan Pasha’s Pure Incense again today. My little sample is pretty empty at this point and I’m trying to resist a “huge” (3ml) bottle and talk myself into 1ml. I don’t ever want to run out, though. It’s probably the coziest scent I have ever smelled. I think it’s the copal, which smells a tiny bit like diesel exhaust and reminds me of my childhood.
