Monday scent of the day 1/30

Posted by Robin on 30 January 2017 261 Comments

lush bath bomb

Like it or not, it's Monday again, and Blue Monday at that. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm countering the gloom with Lush 25:43.

Reminder: 2/3 will be Lemming Friday — you acquired a sample because you kept hearing about it (here or elsewhere), now you think you might just have to buy the bottle. A variation on a theme suggested by SheriG.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Lo and behold, there is actually some sun today! Not as much of a citrus fan as I used to be, but wearing a bit of MH Tangerine Vert, in an effort to use some up before it turns.
Shout out to NST commenter and BdJ contributor Elisa–think that was you mentioned in NYT’s By the Book column–what an honor!

We have a tiny little weak bit of sun, that’s it. This has been the gloomiest January EVER.

And GO Elisa!! Here is Roxane Gay:

It is coolish today, so I am wearing Ambre Narguile which can be a bit much in warm, humid weather.

S(ip)otD: Keemun Mao Feng which has a wonderful toasty, cocoa taste with just a hint of something rose-like in the finish.

One of my favorite teas but they vary so tremendously — like all teas I guess. I have 3 right now and only 1 is really excellent.

    Blue Monday indeed.
I may have subconsciously known before even seeing this since I’m wearing all black with the exception of a blue top – covered by a black cardigan.

I definitely have a lemming and it’ll most likely be worn a lot this week. I wasn’t told about this scent at all. In fact, I got it in one of those mixed bag themes Lucky Scent does. It’s from a couple years ago but when I first smelled it I loved it and raved about it so much on here another NSTer said, “a lemming is born….” Due to how ridiculously expensive it is (and can’t be found on discounter sites) I only had that one precious sample. I hadn’t worn it in a while, but then put it on last week and was reminded of how much I really wanted it and was trying to figure out what I could save out of my tax return…. when I found a manufacturer 10 ml sample on STC. Sure, it was expensive for just 10ml but still cheaper than a FB and it’ll hold me over for a while.

My lemming and STOD is Esquel by Xerjoff.

Lemming Community Project: Gaiac 10 Le Labo
I have a sample of this, I just finished it today. Would love full bottle but I can’t because its not offered all year round. So there you have it! Money saved.

Tea is homemade chai, I will miss my father in law when he is gone. No more chai no more vacation.

My heart goes out to Quebec this morning.

It is a cold but sunny day, so it does not feel depressing at all.
25:43 is a great cheerful scent for winter and early spring. I miss it!
My SOTD is Eau de Guerlain – fresh, green and slightly spicy. In summer I found it a bit too spicy and earthy, but today it works well. The only downside is that the lasting power is rather poor.

I can see why – it is very nice in winter.
I used to think that a winter citrus perfume should be sweet. Now I know that it can also be earthy and savoury.

Lollia Relax for me before I have to go deal with my bank — apparently someone was using my card number to go on a wild spending spree in Miami. It’s a debit card so I’m sure I’m pretty broke at the moment until my bank restores my funds (at least I get paid Thurs). The thieves even contacted the bank ahead of time to put in a travel advisory. Grrr….

Wow. My bank makes me jump through a zillion hoops if I call ahead about a purchase, then usually flags my account anyway. Last time the security questions were things that even I couldn’t guess.
I’m so sorry that some jerk has ruined your day. May the thieves be stricken with rheumatoid arthritis, chronic migraines, IBS, and a stubborn infestation of bedbugs. Maybe lice too, and a good case of Lyme disease.

That’s one ballsy thief. I’ve had this happen numerous times and always been reimbursed, less $40 or $50. Apparently banks have some kind of deductible. *eye roll*

Hope you get it worked out. I have to wonder how the thief got past the security questions on the phone with the bank? You might want to flag all of your accounts and put a temporary prohibition on credit and loans in your name. I went through this process last time my wallet was stolen as I was concerned about long-term identity theft issues.

For sure it is Blue Monday. Cold and grey here. I am going thru my samples once again. Today I am wearing Marc Jacobs Decadence. A woody amber scent with a very sweet vanilla drydown. After 3 hours it has become a skin scent. A regular department store fragrance that did not catch my attention at all. Let’s see from all the samples I will try this week, which one will make it to my FB future shopping list. Hopefully none….

I’m actually just about the opposite of depressed. Horribly intimidated and nervous would be a better description of my mood. I start my new part-time job this afternoon and I really hope I can keep up. They are just too busy to properly train me and I’m being dropped into chaos. I managed a spectacular mistake during my working interview and hope I don’t do anything so embarrassing today. I’m wearing a discreet dose of Cuir de Russie EDT since I don’t know the policy on scent (they have those Scentsy things everywhere so I think I’m safe, but I don’t want to offend).

SOTM was TF Vert d’Encens which I think may be my next Big Perfume Purchase.
Then I forgot to apply a work scent but remembered a sample of Tocca Amelia in my work bag. Chemical coconut fail. Awful.
So on my break I raided my locker stash and am now in Laura Biagiotti Roma and all is right with the world once again :)

I had a craving for Chergui this morning. The second time sampling was the charm for me with this one. I decided to give it one more try before passing on my sample. It was instant love and I ordered my bottle the same day. Also, I’m wearing my blue sweater for Blue Monday. Who knew?

I got an ear worm as soon as I saw “Blue Monday”, so I had to fire up Spotify and play New Order.

I’m wearing Zoologist Bat today. It’s delightfully weird — fruity and earthy at the same time. I’m not sure how much I would actually wear this, but I think I’d still consider buying at least a travel spray.

That’s a perfect picture, I can imagine a hair salon when I think of Bat as well, the dank fur smell (wet hair) with fruit (shampoo & conditioner). Agree it’s not bad thing at all.

Oh, I agree with you. I really love Bat also despite the banana. I’ve tried everything in the sample set and am now debating whether to buy more of one or two–it’s between Bat and Civet, which will probably win–Bat just doesn’t seem to last on me, and Civet lasts forever. Do you like it at all? Bat is weird but pleasantly so–I expected something way more off-putting with the damp earth and all.

It was my birthday yesterday, so I brought some blueberry, almond and violet sugar cake to the office. I’m wearing Fleur de Chine, because I want to smell like the most attractive version of myself while still being office appropriate :)

No party this weekend, as it was also my daughter’s birthday yesterday and I spent most of the day trying and failing to locate 17 kids (around 8 years old) in an indoor adventure park filled with what felt like 1000 and probably was something like 500 kids. Everyone else seemed to have excellent time and I’m positive several children touched my bum because I wore a short and colourful sequin skirt.

SotD = L’eau de L’artisan as the temperatures here are predicted to reach the high 70’s. I love cologne and this one fits the category, green with a bit of a bitter edge. Uplifting and ephemeral, I shall spritz throughout the day.

Love seeing that cheery bath bomb and enjoyed reading the review for Lush 25:43, such a clever name though I have a hard time imagining a Lush fragrance as a wedding scent. Yowza!

Agree today feels like a blue Monday. When I have the downward spiraling feeling January can bring I make lists of things to-do. First thing on my to-do list? Make today’s to-do list, and I feel better already. ;)

My plan for today, after I scrub off the sample of Tubereuse Rosée that smells unfortunately like grape soda pop, is to try out a new bottle of Guerlain Cologne du 68 that I became lemming-esque over after a recent review by Persolaise. I found it at a discounters, of which I’m always leery, so I ordered a sample of the bona-fide product to try alongside. Here’s to no regrets!

I’m a big fan of Cologne du68, it’s such a comforting smell. I’d be very surprised if it wasn’t genuine. With so many popular fragrances to be counterfeited I can’t see why they’d go to all that effort and expense to make a fake version of a scarcely available and scarcely known not too fashionable cologne.

Hello, good morning, all hail and good health–all the happy greetings I can think of! I’ve spent the last several days sequestered with That Thesis., and emerged from it yesterday afternoon a mere shell of myself, having written over 75,000 words of feedback on the thing. What I wrote was not far short of the length of the thesis itself, in fact. All that remains now is to see if the candidate accepts my advice, but even if not, I think I’m done. If I come across Heideggeriam phenomenology again in my lifetime, I’ll probably get hives. In the brain. No, wait, I have them there already….anyway, it’s nice to be back. Summer arrived decisively this last weekend when I was stuck to my computer chair, so I’m wearing a blue summer dress (it’s Tuesday here, but I feel the spirit of Blue Monday) and Narcisse Bleu because it goes with, and because I want to give the impression of being cool and crisp and alert at a meeting, when in fact I feel like half a yard of limp pump water. Illusion is everything today, so I’m also sporting a bright happy lippy and sort of smoky eyes –they’re not deliberate: I’m so tired my hand wobbled when I was putting on liner and then tried to make a virtue of it by smudging it round a bit. Looks surprisingly OK. That Thesis! No, not thinking of it again….the dear one returns today–he spent the long weekend painting windows in Whanganui. Dakkie and his new knitted mouse, Auntie Mildred, (very dashing, scarlet with black tail, but sadly, only one eye) kept me company. Isabella supervised. So that’s me, returning to the land of the living. Yay for living!

Phone started ringing at 7:15 this morning. My husband and older son have long commutes and were long gone by then. So I was a worried one of them had been in an accident… It was recorded message from Oakland Unified School District informing me that parents are not to fear bringing their kids to school as the school will protect and secure all children regardless of county of origin.

In Hummingbird from a sample. Very pretty. I had trouble picking out the notes, except the honey note. Normally I have trouble with honey, but this one is lovely.

Oakland, I’ve been out of touch with everything except writing feedback for my student, so your first paragraph has no context for me, and alarms me hugely. Has something happened that necessitated your son’s school’s to contact with parents in this way? I’m obviously missing a vital stepping stone here. I hope all is OK in your neck of the woods, because I’ve never before heard of a school sending out that sort of message!

Ok mail finally came! First impression is…. it is every bit as gorgeous as I wanted it to be! It takes me back to gardening with my Mom (or playing in the garden while she did all the work…) in early Spring. I find it very ethereal. The name is very fitting. I try not to make decisions on first sniff but I think I will end up wanting a bottle of this. The longer I have it on the more I am falling in love! I can see why it’s so highly regarded, it’s truly a remarkable perfume. Luckily I am planning a trip to Paris in the not too distant future so hopefully I can snag a bottle without the US mark up!

Happy Monday! SOTD is Parfum de Therese. In addition to just loving it, whenever I wear it I feel like I’m secretly the coolest and most sophisticated person around… anybody else have a fragrance that gives them that feeling?

The term Blue Monday means something entirely different here in Ky. and it’s now created a craving:

No, not at all. They made a typo – that should have been “pulled” candy.

It’s a butter cream that’s not gooey and creamy like a truffle center or cream candy, but is more solid with a soft “crunch” (for lack of a better description) that then melts in your mouth.

Blue Monday! Coincidentally, i’m wearing a baby blue boiled wool jacket over a cream short-sleeved satin-trimmed T from JJill…speaking of which, I think they have taken vanity sizing to new heights but did not take into account proportions. For example,
I was swimming in a medium T everywhere except for the boobies where it was designed for someone wearing a training bra or at most a size 32AA…my assets are, ahem, bigger.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

It qualifies as a lemming from an NST exchange between mals and Marjorie Rose.

BTW, Lucas over at Chemist in the Bottle is doing a month of rose-centric perfumes. Yours truly was assigned 3 days and I look forward to my participation. Go check it out :-)

Wanted to wear something strong this morning so I reached for Kilian Pure Oud. Unfortunately the sprayer died on my atomizer bottle after 2 spritzes and I was in a hurry so I put it down and grabbed the other Kilian at hand, Black Oud. I don’t really love the barbecue smoke opening but the drydown is better and it definitely meets the requirement of strong. :-)

Speaking of lemming, I’ve read so many references to Smell Bent that I think I’m going to spring for a sample pack. Any recommendations? I like a wide variety of notes, but don’t love vanilla/gourmand stuff or linden.

Blue Monday indeed. It’s one of those days when it’s so gloomy out drawing the blinds seems pointless.

I’ve had a hard time wearing sandalwood in the past year or so (it smelled overwhelmingly sweet to me) but spritzed some SSS Champagne de Bois last night and decided to wear it today. I’m thrilled to be able to wear this again – gorgeous, and so elegant. I love the heavy dose of aldehydes. I’m having a full-on nose-to-wrist day.

I’ll have to pull out Samsara (thanks for the reminder, Barqs) and Bois des Iles this week. I have a feeling I’ll be glad I kept 10 ml of BdI when I swapped the rest of my decants away. Since I bought Champagne de Bois because people here raved about it, and *just* found myself looking at FB prices, it even fits this week’s theme.

I’ll also say that my most successful recommendations have been from SOTD threads. I’m not great at picking out samples on my own, but when a perfume comes up here over and over again and gets love from a wide swath of wearers, it’s almost always worked for me, too. Thanks, NSTers!

Starting this week early in Chanel No 22
I had been hearing about this scent since I was quite young, but when I started in the fragrance world, the raves became so frequent, I had to try a sample, then a decant, then a FB, and now exploring vintage.

To ‘celebrate’ being back in the gloom of the UK, I’m doing 4 days of D S & Durga’ HYLNDS series. SOTD is “Bitter Rose, Broken Spear”.

    Top: embers, thyme and cubeb pepper;
    Mid: rose, thistle and nutmeg;
Base: hot iron, amber and larch.

I like this one, although what I smell has little to do with the official notes. On me it’s a kind of smoke-and-booze-with-flowers (there’s no booze listed). TOMK gets patchouli (there’s no patchouli listed). Longevity is decent and different notes come to the fore as the day goes by.

I was too depressed yesterday by recent political developments to post anything, too worried about two of my graduate students who are from Iran and one it turns out is now stuck there after going home for the holidays for the first time in years. :-( Here in Houston we have 78 degrees, and a surreal juxtaposition on the news of Super Bowl events with protests. My academic disciplinary organization is facing boycotts from all foreign members for next year’s conferences. The outlook is so bleak. I am trying to keep my head above water and focus on goodness and beauty. To that end, today I wore Rahele which must just be a gift from the gods. So beautiful and I have looked at the notes but it just wafts up to my nose in a seamless blend of some citrus, florals, and spices. Recently I’ve ordered a lot of samples because I felt I was in a scent rut and I found many that I liked a lot but this one is just plain transcendent. So far I am only dabbing it from a mini-sample but I hope it will pass the test when sprayed as well.

I am wearing old full bottles to see if I need to part with them…and original formula Miss Dior Cherie will be sent packing w/ her bags I fear…

Sometimes I like to hunt vintage/old formula perfumes on eBay just for the thrill methinks. Or perhaps my nose has changed. When I was little I didn’t like dark chocolate, for example, and now I love it and can’t do milk chocolate. Perhaps I am becoming more refined…at least regarding chocolate and strawberry/popcorn/patchouli liquid confections…that is what I shall tell myself I think… ;)

I’m almost always late to the commenting party, but I did finish up a small decant of Arquiste Infanta en Flor today. Boy, it really wasn’t what I remembered it to be. I didn’t get much orange blossom or white floral, just an odd cold cream or lotion smell. Luckily, it didn’t last terribly long, just about 4 hours. Now I’m looking forward to getting home from work and applying something else!
