Monday scent of the day 1/23

Posted by Robin on 23 January 2017 251 Comments

Lavandula stoechas

Another week begins. If it helps, it's Pie Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Maria Candida Gentile Barry Lyndon.

Reminder: 1/27 will be Sci-Fi Friday — wear a fragrance that transports you to some alternative futuristic scenario, or that matches a favorite Sci-Fi novel or movie. Suggested by Solanace, who mentioned Strange Invisible Perfumes Fire and Cream as a cologne a cyborg might enjoy wearing.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Another manic Monday. I am wearing Lyric as a remedy to rain and sleet.

We’re stuck in a loop of sprinter this winter in my area. I hope we aren’t shoveling snow in May as a result.

SOTD is my sample of Stephen Jones Wisteria Hysteria for the sci-fi/futuristic theme of this week. I remember Robin posted the commercial for this perfume, and it looked very otherworldly – could be sci-fi, could be fantasy. The bottle design is unusual too. And the scent itself has that metallic note people often associate with futurism. Wisteria is only noticeable during first five minutes, then a clean musk takes over. At that stage the scent is cold and unemotional – something fit for a robot. Now, a couple of hours later, I can only smell the base notes – warm dry resins and spices. Incense and cloves are probably the most prominent notes now. The metallic note is still there, but it is a heated metal by now.
Verdict: interesting. Not and instant love, but I am having fun sampling it.

Not sure about hot weather (it gets really smoky and spicy on me at some point), but I am pretty sure that a warmer weather would suit it. I’ll try to remember to wear in on a sunny day in April.

I think that largely it’s because they are both created in collaboration with Comme des Garçons – probably the most futuristic perfume house. My knowledge of CdG scents is limited, but I believe one can do a couple of “futuristic” perfume weeks wearing their scents alone.

It’s rainy and ridiculously windy out. In fact, the wind was bad all night so I slept horribly due to tree branches and things banging against the house.
Sotd: Samsara – really needing something comforting right now. It’s not even that cold out but the damn makes it feel much more chilly and the wind reinforces that.
    tea: black coffee.

Sci-Fi Friday!! I HAVE BEEN TRAINING FOR THIS MY WHOLE LIFE. SOTD: Estee Lauder Azuree Soleil, in a desperate attempt to counter four days of drizzling. It’s the sunniest, most cheerful gardenia, and yes, still prefer it to Bronze Goddess.

I dabbed on some Misia from my swap decant roller ball, and I am really glad that I’ve given it a 4th or 5th try. I really don’t like the opening notes at all, and I see that won’t change b/c I always smell that weird plastic thing that a lot of violets do for me. But if I make myself really ignore them then after about 15 minutes I like it. I do love the creamy base notes. I don’t think I’d ever buy a full bottle at the price it is, but it was cheerful on a dreary day.

SOTD = Tam Dao, a lovely light Sandalwood scentry, to smooth the ragged edges of Monday.
I am doing my bit for social disruption today, by responding, whenever anyone says,”How are you?” with, “OH, the tractor got a flat tire over the weekend, which always puts a crimp in my plans.” Getting a tractor tire reseated on its rim is not a trivial task. Many of the mildly privileged people here in Ann Arbor clearly have no idea what I am talking about. A couple said Bummer and proceeded to tell me a tractor story. I’ve made some new friends!

Yeah, a flat tractor tire is a substantial pain in the fundament, both in terms of rearranged plans and of the bank account. We’re going to have to replace a rear tire on the John Deere 4040, and the initial estimate was $867. OUCH. (The tire’s probably 20 years old, though, so I suppose we got the good out of it.)

Yes, tractor tires need to be thought of as a long term investment. $860/20 years is not so bad if you think of it as $43.00/year instead. This one was a front tire on the 4WD Kubota (which we got when the old non-4WD Oliver just sank into our sticky clay one too many times…), and the place in Manchester that does tractor tires was able to put a tube in and get it reseated on the rim, which was not bent. Now adorable hubby just had to get it put back onto the axle, in the mud. Ugh.

If someone made a perfume that smelled like tractors and wet clay, adorable hubby would wear that in a second!

Please tell me you wear perfume on the tractor! I spend about 2 months out of the year in North Idaho and love the John Deere as it gets me away from the parents and does cool stuff. I wear perfume just doing house work alone in the house, I certainly wear it there too. Bummer on tractor repairs. I attempted to get the snow thrower repaired at the parents and was shocked at the price. We were left with using the bucket on the front.

My normal out in the woods perfume is VC&A Bois d’Iris. If I wear anything too floral, I attract bees, and if I wear anything animalic, I attract even more mosquitoes that I normally do. Woody scents with cedar and juniper repel some of the bugs a bit it seems. Tractors are great tools. Hubbie grew up on them and is very skillful. I bumble aroudnd and try to only hit what I am aiming at. :-)

Ouch. Our old John Deere needs a full set of new tires, which is what is keeping it sitting in the shed. It also needs to be rewired, but that’s a fun job that I would be totally up for if some sucker would just buy the tires…

I love it – Social Disruption! When someone starts a sentence with “Do you mind if I (blah blah blah)?” they have usually justified what they are about to do that may offend or anger you AND they expect you to say no. Well, let’s just say I’ve surprised some people by answering “Yes, I do mind!”

SICK OF RAIN. The ground is so saturated that when you step on it, water splashes up on your foot like you just stomped on a wet sponge. Plus, it SHOULD HAVE BEEN SNOW. It’s freakin’ JANUARY already. Hmph.

SOTD is Memoir Woman, because a) this lingering grumpy is not being helped by the weather, and b) it just smells good.

Also, if you’ve been pondering a purchase at Teo Cabanel, they’re having a private 40% off sale on several fragrances due to changes in packaging. I think you can only get there from an email, though, so if you’re interested, you can send me a private email to malsnano86 AT the geemale (must stymie those bots that steal email addresses!) and I’ll forward mine to you.

I’m a fan of Romantina. It’s maybe a bit boring, but it’s purdy (orange flower, honey, musky).

I really like Lady Vengeance. I liked it so much, I purchased a FB of it about a year ago. That was actually my SOTD today. Romantica is nice too. But MM is probably my favorite from that line. I received a sample of it a couple of weeks ago and really liked it. All three of these JHAG’s are nice “rose” scents.

Pie Day almost negates the fact that it’s Monday. Very breezy and less like summer here, so I busted out my Bandit decant from a swap.

The beginning doesn’t really wow me, but I’ve had it on for about an hour and it’s settling into a very nice scent. I don’t get any skank at all, just a soft understated warm florally kind of effect. Doesn’t knock my socks off, but that ok, it’s quite wearable.

NSTer’s must answer the Call of Pie Day and get a nice slice of thier
    Favorite! It’s your duty ????

Deva, I used to wear Bandit in cooler weather and thought it just ok. Then I tried it in steamy hot weather and it was sooo much better! It may seem like it’d smother you to death but the greenness cuts through enough to make it totally wearable. Maybe it’s worth a repeat attempt?

Vintage L’Air de Temps EdT that I found yesterday. Gorgeous and perfectly proportioned, at turns green, spicy, and floral. Sadly it definitely inspired a generation of functional products. Smelling this again makes me think it in some way inspired Jour d’Hermes with its sensual soft-focus blooms.

First day back at work today after a lazy week off. My hairdryer died halfway through drying my hair so by the time I hunted high and low for my (pretty useless) travel one and got ready I was somewhat frazzled and indecisive on the perfume front. Went for one of my favourite low-key go-tos with Kelly Caleche edt and it was perfect. Restored all calm and order :)
Off to bed now as I have a hairdryer shopping expedition to attend to first thing tomorrow.

Ugh! Don’t you hate when that happens. My Chi flatiron went out on me a couple of weeks ago as I was getting ready for a doctor’s appointment. Before it completely blew out, it decided to fry a part of my hair. Went to Ulta to get another Chi and was told by the SA that the quality of Chi isn’t the same and they don’t hold up anymore. Well I found another brand that I liked and thought I lucked out when I saw the pricetag was $59. Come to find out, they had the wrong price on the one I fell in love with (it was actually $169). But, since it was their error, they honored the $59 ticket! Yay! And the SA told me that I smelled nice! Can’t remember what I was wearing, but that horrific day turned out so much better. See how scent can change the lives of so many. :)

I”m trying two scents on two hands today, both by Charente Macerations and recommended to me by a perfume-knowledgeable friend. More accurately, he recommended Asphalt Rainbow which would “blow my mind.” It really didn’t but wow do I love both of these others, Christopher Street (lime, leather, smoke and SPICES–Clove and Cinnamon!), and Eye, Hatshepsut–this one is truly delicious–it’s hard to pin down as I don’t know what several ingredients smell like including blue lotus and kohl I get something buttery with spice and depth and a tiny bit of honey–not so much of the smoke and patchouli listed–but it’s early days yet.

    SotD = Hiris

Fragrantica describes Hiris as floral green. Today it’s aromatic with an appealing edge of bitterness. Perfect for a chilly, rainy morning.

That’s a beautiful picture up top. Lavender is one of my favorite essential oils. I put some on my feet this morning. I waft as I walk.

And hurray for pie day. I always stick a slice or two of leftover pie in the freezer during the holidays. Time to thaw a slice of apple pie.

I wish everyone a marvelous Monday. It’s going to be a good week.

    Manic Monday!

    1) Tomorrow is the meeting with my insurance adjuster. Ugh! The upstairs is partially dried out but smelled of mildew, so sprayed down with vinegar and mildew killer, then sprinkled Arm &Hammer baking soda stuff to absorb and vacuum up. It’s warm and dry enough to air the house out, but the leak intrusion still remains, and that must be repaired.

    2) Sci Fi Week! Yay! First up, What Would Spock Wear?
Seriously, though, think about it: He’s from a desert planet, but works on a starship. It has to be close to the body (environmental scrubbers on a spaceship will NOT like scents with a lot of projection) spicy yet non offensive (he works with Tellarites). So Spock would wear Comme De Garcons X Monocle Laurel.

I am wearing this today (from decant+ piece of soap from years back) and it’s fresh and lovely, with a lovely spicy, grassy, crisp air. It does not project at all, which makes it great for a starship or being in an Earth bound office.

My little town is east of Lake Michigan and every year we are under what our weatherman calls permacloud, but it’s not so bad when it’s snow rather than fog and rain. was it you that was asking about the chanel crayons, the new lipstick. I tested a few and didn’t find one that I liked. I ended up with the rouge coco lipstick (again)

Tell me more about the 31 RC EDP? How does it compare?

Yes, I am curious about the Chanel crayons and will probably wait for some of the make-up bloggers to do review in-depth and see swatches…kind of like the Consumer Reports for high-end make-up…I feel less guilt if something gets a good review and isn’t easily duped. ;)

The 31 RC EDP smelled like a different perfume to me. I haven’t worn them side by side in all fairness but the EDP was so off-putting when I sniffed it that I had no interest in it. The EDP also smells somewhat sour. Someone else on Basenotes or Fragrantica commented that the EDP was almost unrecognizable and I thought it was an exaggeration but when I finally sniffed it I thought the same thing.

Oh how disappointing about the 31RC EDP! I wonder if this is the reason why there’s no extrai version yet? It sounds like a higher concentration mangles the juice. I will need to be more judicious with my use, but no hoarding!

About your question yesterday, Austenfan, Brazil tends to be VERY rainy during summer, specially in the Southeast and Bahia – and when it’s not rainy, it’s HOT. I always recommend coming here during our winter, when we have blue skies and mild temps, around 15 C. Also, waterfalls are safe, since there are no abrupt changes in the amount of water coming down.

I only have one scent that I would consider sci-fi-ish, so I’m saving it for Friday. Today I’m trying Lipstick Rose for the first time. The opening smells A LOT like Misia to me, but it quickly becomes sweeter and a bit fruitier – not sure what I think yet.

I’m no sci-fi expert, but I recommend the story collection Her Smoke Rose Up Forever by James Tiptree Jr (Alice Sheldon) for anyone who’s a fan of the genre.

I’m interested to see how your opinion develops. I HATED Lipstick Rose the first time I tried it, even though in general I quite love rose. Then, years later, I got a random sample of it in a package, and tried it again, and now I’m a fan.

I’m a few hours in now, and back to thinking it’s a sweeter Misia. It’s definitely fun – maybe I’ll wind up a fan too!

I hope you both love it – I thought it was amazing! A few of the stories shade into horror as well, particularly “The Screwfly Solution,” which is my favorite of the ones in the collection.

My SOTD is SL Iris Silver Mist. A classic, and seems right for a cold-ish day that nonetheless reminds me of spring. We have sun and I heard the birds chirping as I was getting ready, and felt like something spring-like but not too spring-like. A little bit of hope, even though I know I have to get through fearsome February and dreary April still. Rain, rain, rain in this West Coast city, at least usually.

My leading contenders for sci-fi scents are EL Dazzling Silver and SL De Profundis… but they are way too light for this chilly damp weather… just had hail a minute ago. It should be warmer by the end of this week, so who knows.

Been marooned at home (roads blocked by mudslides) since Friday. They say they’ll have a road open later today. Hope so.

Wearing Vero Profumo Rubj. I just got free samples with a LuckyScent order of three Voile D’Extraits and found them a lot weaker than I expected — Rubj is the only one that has any projection in my experience so far. (I also ordered Onda and Kiki). Obviously not the worst thing to happen in the past few days, but a little disappointing. I’ll have to try much heavier application.

That’s useful to know, very Profumo has been on my to try list for a very long time, and Rubj is the one I’m really looking forward to trying. How do they compare to the edp’ sand extra it’s?

Monday, Monday. I’ve been working my way through a handful of Chanel samples (yay!) these past couple of days, and can report that I liked Beige more than I’d expected to, and Cristalle EDT less than I’d expected, the latter being perhaps a bit sweet for my tastes. Today I have Coco on one arm, which I can appreciate but doesn’t at all suit what I’m in the mood for today, and 1932 on the other arm. 1932 also doesn’t quite suit today — its big springtime floralness is out of place on this very cold, sopping wet, sunless day — but I can see myself enjoying it on a warmer and more optimistic day.

Ajellyfish, if you are in the US, The Perfumed Court has some Chanel. A caveat, though… they will not ship Chanel samples to NY state. eBay is also an option, but prices have shot thru the roof recently.

Morning, all. I am cautiously approaching the beginnings of an unformed hope that we might dally with a temperature that approximates to summer today, but I don’t want to be too bold in a cool green perfume in case it shyly lacks up and leaves again. So, Maharani, I think. Oh goodness, I LOVE this! I suppose it’s an oriental, but to me, it has gourmand elements too, and it fits into my category of “golden” perfumes, along with Fate and a couple of others. I find it gently sensual, a soft, embracing afterglow…..it’s too good to waste on the office, but I should have thought of that earlier! Harrumph!

And on that note, wearing layers of clothes in case that summer temperature decides to retreat, I had better beetle off and face my day. Be well and smell better, NST.

“Golden” is a lovely perfume category! Chamade is golden to my nose, but I’m not sure what else might be among my collection. Fate always reminds me of beignets, which, I suppose, are golden under their powdered sugar. :)

Lolita Lempicka for Blade Runner’s Rachael. She thinks it’s comfy because it resonates with her fake memories of cherry pies and her mom’s signature Angel. Yep, Rachael wears perfume for herself.

Happy Monday Everyone! Late to the party today. I wanted to “smell like a rose” today so that was my “theme” today. I started with my Molton Brown Delicious Rhubarb and Rose shower gel. Then I used some of my Tauer Rose Oil. I topped it all off with JHAG’s Lady Vengeance. All of these, surprisingly, blended so well together.

SOTD is “Venetian Blue” by The Merchant of Venice.

    Top: apple, bergamot and lemon;
    Mid: black pepper, birch and patchouli;
    Base: moss, ambergris and musk.

Dear NST friends, if you like colourful glass bottles with pretty patterns, The Merchant of Venice is for you. If, by some freakish chance, you like perfume, then… not so much. Tones that are muted well below the demands of politeness coupled with powers of endurance shorter than A Certain President’s attention span.

Today I did some more writing for LinkedIn, spoke to a couple of recruiters, did a little shopping and arranged to see some houses on Wednesday. The other Mr Koenigsberg test-drove his new vegan sandals on the beach. But – sad to say – as we go shopping we are already thinking about limiting what we buy because we only have 4 days left.

I started off the work day with Attache Moi – 55. Right before lunch, my order of Zoologist Hummingbird arrived. I could not resist spraying a little on me…and I can still vividly smell it at almost 4:30. It completely took over the Attache Moi -55. I like it a lot…almost as much as Zoologist Civet. Just what I didn’t need…to like a new line (to me) of perfumes. I am almost afraid to try the samples they sent me for fear that I will love them as well.

Sorry that you are having a bad day. What puts a smile on your face? Chocolate? Maybe a gourmand scent? A nice floral arrangement? Maybe a nice rose fragrance. I wore one today and that made me happy. Or think of an event that occurred in your life that brought you happiness. Do you remember what scent you were wearing? My “happy” or “cheer up” scent is Nectarine Blossom & Honey. I hope tomorrow is a better day for you.
