Wednesday scent of the day 1/4

Posted by Robin on 4 January 2017 231 Comments

braille

It's Hump Day, plus World Braille Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing a tiny dose of vintage Estée Lauder Youth Dew from a sample someone sent me.

Reminder: 1/6 will be Take it down a notch Friday — wear a perfume that has a bad reputation because people wore way too much of it back in the day. Go ahead and wear it lightly, or go loud and proud, you'll get points either way. Suggested by Bear.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

You know , I am actually doing the very OPPOSITE of this week’s community project, now that I think about it-LOL!

    In Lyric Woman again.

Thanks for the comments about my haircut yesterday. I’m really glad I decided to chop it all off. It’s much easier to do now and I feel a lot more “me” with it shorter.

Especially if you’ve had long hair for a while, getting a big haircut can be so incredibly liberating!

I used to always have short hair and then in my 30s I grew it out to see what this whole long hair business was about. I ended up realizing it’s not what I like at all. It weighs my head down and takes forever for me to make look nice (I always have to blow dry or I’m a frizzy mess).

I then also didn’t cut it because I knew the hubs preferred long hair. Not that I’m a push over for that, but it’s not unreasonable to want to look nice for the most important person in your life.

But I couldn’t handle it anymore and warned him. He’s fine with it and ultimately doesn’t care. So I’m glad I did chop it all off. It IS very liberating!

I found my hair takes much longer now that it’s short – it’s trickier to make it look good! :)

I suppose it depends on what kind of hair style you have. Mine is cropped really REALLY short (think Mia Farrow from Rosemary’s Baby), so I just wet it down and throw a tiny bit of product in to give it texture and I’m done. It takes me 2 minutes to do now.
My mom, on the other hand, has short hair, but the top is longer so she blow dries and then curls and such so it takes her much longer.

I’ve still never had the nerve to chop mine off. When it gets as short as even shoulder-blade-length, it gets so big and puffy it’s stupid. If only I’d known back in junior high that I could have Farrah Fawcett hair just by cutting it shorter.

I used to have it this short when I was much younger. When I grew it out I thought I’d never go above a chin length bob cut, but here we are – and it’s really nice! I have frizzy hair and even my bob cut could get very frizzy and puffy if I didn’t blow dry it down.

My mother wore it also, although in her later years she usually wore Anais Anais. I never did wear it “back in the day”, since I considered it an old lady scent. Once I started down the devil’s highway that is the world of perfume, I bought some and love it.

It reminded me a lot of Terracotta and Bronze Goddess, but then I tried all three in a side-by-side and Orchid Soleil was definitely the outlier. Same theme, though.

I’ve been planning to place an order on the Aftelier website and am going to get either the jasmine sambac or the jasmin grandiflorum Chef’s Essence. Jasmine grandiflorum seems like it would be better in food, but I can’t help but want to try the sambac (this might be a good-Kermit/bad-Kermit situation for anyone familiar with that meme). Does anyone want to talk some sense into me (in either direction :))?

SOTD is Dzing! Finished off my sample of this morning, which always feels like an accomplishment (even when it’s only 1mL).

Off to take a MONSTER load of recyclables to the town center (it’s been ten days since I took the last batch, but it’s way past overflowing again GAH), in Parfum Sacre.

The CEO wants to trade in our 2007 Caravan on a small crossover SUV, so we’re going to go look at some this afternoon. I’m having mixed feelings. It’s not that I loooove the van, but I really hope we don’t wind up buying something that later turns out to be uncomfortable. I liked the Camry when we first got it, but driving for longer than an hour in it makes my back ache. I have short little T Rex arms, and often cannot find a good driving position even in an adjustable seat.

I have the same discomfort issue with my Civic. The seat is just not comfortable. I’ve resolved to rent my planned purchase for a week to try to avoid this if possible. There’s no way to know that in a short test drive…I have the same recyclables issue, too! Gotta go to the center, soonest.

T-rex arms. Ha! I’m just over 5 feet tall and have the short arms to match.

I switched to a new car a few years ago and could not find the right position for the seat. In desperation I got a pillow to sit on and it’s just right.

I’m wearing ELdO’s Like This – just got my bottle in the mail yesterday :) It’s so delicious – I can’t quit sniffing myself! I’m going to try to wear all of my full bottles to work during the day, and then sample at night for the new year. Seems like a good way to start off on the right foot appreciating what I have!

I got a little sample of L’Artisan’s Bois Farine – I’m digging immortelle and think I’ll sample this one this evening to continue the theme. I think it grows on the dunes here in northern CA but I’m not 100% sure – I’m going to keep my eye out now when I go to the beach. Happy hump day, everyone!

It does, or something very closely related. Any of the Gnaphaliums (pearly everlasting) have that scent, though G. californicum is the strongest. It has bright green, sticky leaves. I LOVE immortelle/pearly everlasting, and can never understand why it’s such a polarizing scent. Maybe it’s genetic, like enjoying cilantro…

Long time no post so hello to old fumie friends and new.
Today is day 5 sick in bed with flu and totally over it- and the longest I’ve gone without scent for years!
I just wanted to give a shoutout that TPC has Chanel back in stock. A sizeable range including vintage. Which makes the disappearance even odder imo, but who cares- Chanel’s back :)

Welcome back! Yeah I’d noticed that TPC had Guerlains again, except for NY-ers. So now Chanels too, huh, that’s great! I guess their lawyers figured out that the cease-and-desist letters only had weight in NY. Good news for the non-NYers anyway.

    Good Morning!

    1) Wow- a cold snap in Portland! Last night the cold winds blew and blew. I felt like I was one of the little piggies, hiding in my bed from the big bad wold of winter blowing at my house!\

    2) Am in TF Noir pour Femme both a bit of emulsion AND the scent. THIS is the season to wear this. What would be a touch too much in warmer weather is perfect in the winter. You just need a spritiz or two, and you can easily dilute down the emulsion with a unscented body cream.

I saw a piece on this year’s CES featuring a braille tablet (the dots appear and disappear as required).

SOTD is Aedes de Venustas “Copal Azure”, a very tasty incense.

Today is a lovely sunny day so the other Mr Koenigsberg and I spent it walking along the seashore, the whole distance from the Royal Yacht Club in to the Malagueta beach. Stopped for lunch in the 1920s Balneario del Carmen with a table on the terrace by the sea. We argued jokingly on which of the quaint cottages/ Victorian villas/ luxury apartments we would take as our own. :^)

That sounds fabulous. The villa question can only be answered via further investigation – you need to make friends with the villa owners and be invited over for cocktails in order to evaluate each home.

Now that I am looking, I have over 15 bottles of different JM scents! I really do wear fragrances from other perfumers, but I guess hers are truly a staple for me in my life. Anyways, my SOTD is Basil & Neroli by Jo Malone, of course. I will wear a different perfumer tomorrow! :)

Trying out Hendley’s Jade today, or at least for the first half of the day. If you like a very herbal green, as I do, it’s terrific. There is something a little waxy about it that is my only slight question mark. And we will see how it wears. I tried Rosenthal last night and liked it very much, but maybe a little soft? Clearly not meeting the Friday challenge! Does anyone have experience with the line?

I went for a walk through the blackened forest yesterday which was a rather sombre affair: charred skeleton trees, lack of birdlife and the smell of ash. The fire could have been much worse as the native bush escaped … But it was definitely arson. No sign of the kingfishers, their nesting tree reduced to a black spike. Wearing Musc Nomade this morning, a beautiful scent.

Morning, all. I’m still out of sorts, but moderately cheerful in spite of it, and I’m wearing gorgeous, earthy Coromandel and a colourful, silky dress to express my general bonhomie. Cormandel appeals to me on every level: it is interesting, slightly sexy, sophisticated in a slightly tousled kind of way–it definitely makes the cut for my All Time Top Ten, which actually reaches about 23 if you count in the boringly linear way that the dear man does. He definitely does not understand perfume arithmetic. Be well, all. I’m off to fight with the HR system at work to try to achieve a variation on my annual leave. I’m seeing so many students next week that it seems a bit silly to consume my holidays when I am actually working.

Good morning Waterdragon! I’m feeling out of sorts too, just a bit niggly…like when a bra strap keeps slipping off your shoulder …that kind of niggly. Hopefully the day will improve. Hope HR sees sense. Good luck!

Yes! I have nothing much wrong, just the annoyance of this burning mouth–it’s a jiggle, not an illness. A slipping bra strap is the perfect analogy!

I’m wearing Escentric 2 today. It’s the first full bottle I purchased after a decade of perfume deprivation, and I still love it as much as I did when I bought in at the Scottsdale Barney’s in 2014.

Another sunny morning here, and I hope it lasts – yesterday started off well, but by 4pm it had turned to winter. No exaggeration! Chamade didn’t seem quite so appropriate as the temperature plummeted and the storm arrived. I’ll go with the more multi-purpose 31 Rue Cambon today.

I’m trying Tuberose Couture from a sample. It’s a really, really good tuberose. Very pleasantly surprised.

Tea is a mix of my last Earl Grey Fleurs with some Sweet Golden Grey to make it more interesting.

I’m holding a Jicky/Vol-de-Nuit face-off today, since they remind me of each other each time I wear them separately. In theory they should be quite different, right? But they do seem to have a similar feel on my skin. I plan to honor the winner with an upgrade from decant to FB.

I’m wearing my big scent today since I probably won’t be able to play on Friday. I raided Mom’s perfumes before I left and am wearing several sprays of current-ish Coco EDP on one arm and one tiny spritz of nineties EDT on the other. I’ll let you guys guess which one has disappeared and which is easily detectable from a yard away :D

Perfume misadventure at the bookstore today! You can apply too much D&G Light Blue! I thought someone broke a bottle of this in our store today but they just over applied. I cannot believe I just typed over applied! Yes, me, a card carrying lover of Bal a Versailles, Fracas, and Alien!

I like that one a lot, but sometimes I get a lot of coconut from it, which I don’t love. Other times I can’t smell any. It’s a mystery. It’s a dabbler sample so maybe too light= coconut?

I don’t get coconut and I just dabbed some from my little sample to doublecheck. It’s very woody on me. Then I just looked at Fragrantica to see the notes and see that its described, by Slumberhouse I presume, as smelling like Carmex, which I find amazing. I think Carmex is revolting and made my person swear never to use it ever again in life. Ore smells nothing like it to me.

I tried it this evening and, yup. I’m getting a dark chocolate Mounds bar on a mahogany platter. When I sprayed it in the store it was more dry cocoa and wood.

I didn’t notice a coconut note but I only have a dabber sample so I may have missed it. Coconut notes don’t work for me either. Ore sort of reminds me of PP Cocoa Tuberose. There are some similarities in the style of fragrance. I get dark chocolate in the opening and a velvety dry down. I’ll have to try it again soon.

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Emeraude Agar

This is part of the metallic series. I got the 30 mL bottle from STC’s 20% off Boxing Day sale. It was a bargain…priced at the regular line prices, so I snapped it up. It is unisex, veering more masculine, woudy (!) cologne with bergamot and black pepper. I could have sworn there was lavender but it was probably the geranium playing tricks on me!

Acqua di Parma Rosa Nobile, a free sample with my recent Sephora order (Phillip Thomas Roth mini mask set). It was quite nice. Nothing earth-shattering or all that original, but nicely done. It was a good background scent for mid-week.
