Tuesday scent of the day 1/3

Posted by Robin on 3 January 2017 254 Comments

It's John Ronald Reuel Tolkien's birthday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Robert Piguet Fracas. Tea at the moment is my own (equally loud) Earl Grey Extreme blend, made from Upton Extra Bergamot Earl Grey mixed with Upton China Imperial Lapsang Souchong.

Reminder: 1/6 will be Take it down a notch Friday — wear a perfume that has a bad reputation because people wore way too much of it back in the day. Go ahead and wear it lightly, or go loud and proud, you'll get points either way. Suggested by Bear.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the teapot napkin rings are $17 at Bombay in Canada.

    Messe de Minuit today.

I like mixing Lapsang with Earl Grey too, but today it’s PG tips. Strong enough to get me up in the morning. And it makes me think of London hotels.

I am in Eau de Charlotte today and drinking Seven Peaks China green tea.
    Love love those napkin rings!!!

I made a small list of perfumes that I am embarrassed I haven’t tried yet. One is Iris Silver Mist, and the other, is Chamade. I know I know…good grief. Maybe that could be a future community project.

If the project is to smell something you really ought to have already smelled, I think the only issue is access — I am assuming you have not smelled ISM because you haven’t got any! So it would require more advance planning than many of these projects.

Not loud, though very proudly wearing L’Impact Pour un Homme by Caron. I’m on the last bits of Earl Grey Fleurs, which is actually quite nice, but not extreme enough.
Love your SOTD, and your blend sounds great.

The Upton Extra Bergamot is nice to have around to amp up any Earl Grey that is too wimpy for you, although it might eat up the Fleurs part. I have some of the Aftelier Bergamot food spray and I’ve used that too. If she would make a “tea” spray and a “caffeine” spray I could stop buying tea and just drink flavored water ;-)

I’m going to add some of my Sweet Golden Grey with the last of my Fleurs. The problem is I can’t taste any flowers in it. Damman has some good Earl Greys but this one is just a tad bland. I’m going to look into the Upton Earl Grey.

:) on your flavoured water, it reminds me of the great cartoon Asterix in Britain, where all the Britons drink warm water, with the occasional cloud of milk.

It’s my only Astérix that I’ve got in French. My brother has all the original Goscinny ones in Dutch translation, and whenever I would be sick as a child I got the whole pile and reread them. I loved being ill when I was young ;)

I’m wearing Aromatics Elixir, quite lightly applied, because I am almost at the end of my mini. Time to buy a full bottle.

Is it possible to lightly apply that one? I have a sample of it and am under the impression that one drop has a plutonium half life. I only wear it when I’m alone.

Let me put it this way – as I was spraying, it sort of spluttered on and I applied a lot less than when I had a fuller mini. At this point, four hours after application, I can barely smell it. Maybe I’m so used to applying more that I can’t smell how strong it is. Anyway, I have an office separate from my staff so no one has complained yet. And believe me, I hear it when there is a scent someone would prefer I not wear.

I like to mix things up, Undina! test out my spring/summer scents in the dead of winter and vice versa! I once wore Winter Woods in the high heat of summer and it smelled so good…the vanilla/amber was amped up.

Hey linden twin! I do think of it as a spring/summer scent but it’s totally working for me on this rainy day — it’s all plush, soft little pale-green billows (winter in California really is sort of spring, with all the new greenery that happens)!

You smell great , Robin! I had a mini Fracas Parfum which was rapidly evaporating so I recently dumped the bit that was left into a few ounces of unscented lotion which definitely helps take it down a notch and makes it wearable for me- it’s a contender for Friday.
I’m wearing Geisha Noire today which is warming in this cold, drizzly day.

It is strong which is why I never wore it. I used to think I didn’t like it until I tried Fracas shower cream which left a light veil of scent that was perfect. I’m hoping this has the same effect-I actually haven’t worn this lotion yet.

I love Fracas although, oddly, I’ve never owned or worn it. My sister used to wear it. So did a work colleague. She stopped wearing it because she got too many compliments I think. She became concerned it was too much. Even though I told her it never was, she stopped. I missed it.

I’ve never had the “problem” of too many compliments with anything I’ve worn, but I can see thinking that means that maybe it’s too much if that many people notice it.

First time wearing something since New Year’s day. I’ve been totally perfume-free for the holiday break. I’m in Feminite du Bois. I have only the last 10% of the bottle left, so I’m trying to finish it. I wore it so much a few years ago and the smell just takes me back to a better time instantly. Plus it’s so comforting in winter.
I wore Amouage Homage for New Year; it felt truly decadent in an “après nous le déluge” sort of way.

Happy Tuesday, all, and happy birthday Tolkien! I gave myself a serious case of olfactory fatigue yesterday, trying to make a dent in my sample basket. I found a few new scents to enjoy in the process, but after scrubbing off Ambre Nuit and Baume de Doge (for the same reason — IT’S LOG! IT’S LOG! IT’S BIG IT’S HEAVY IT’S WOOD!) I needed a nice, unscented evening. Today I’m in Demeter Linden, because it’s just lovely, and gentle, and because I’m convinced it’s what Tolkien’s elves smelled like. :)

Very clever Isabelle! I agree with you!! We just finished the LoTR series last nite (a fitting tribute had we known of his bday)!
Eau di doge gave me the same reaction initially, bit I have grown to like it now that I enjoy frankincense so much, especially for the holidays. (Funny I just wore IT last nite as well, having a small sample left)WEIRD???
We have a Linden tree out front that smells heavenly in early summer, so you do too!! Enjoy!!
Ok so where is Donatella?? I have some confessions to absolve!

OMG, Isabella!!! I would’ve just done a spit take if I were drinking something. I can’t tell you how relieved I am to know I’m not the only person to know–and still remember–Log!

I was thinking about the Elves, too, wondering what they would wear. Then I figured they wouldn’t wear anything; they’d just naturally smell like trees and fresh air. ????

Hi, Natalya, did you ask me about the Kerosene sample set recently? If yes, then I got mine from IndieScents when they had free shipping. I’m not sure if it’s an official set, but you get all twelwe scents in decent spray vials (or, alternatively, can choose 6 for half the price).

If it wasn’t you, I’m sorry!

Baptême du Feu, which is a nice spicy gingerbread that I think has some mildly pine-y (though this might be me mistranslating the sharpness of the gunpowder) masculine undertones. It doesn’t seem like there was much excitement over this one, but I think it’s lovely.

I’m there with you on paring back. I had an absolutely brutal ( in a good way) organizer come and go through my closets with me a few years ago because I didn’t know where to begin. A visit from him again may be worth the investment to get me back in track.
I won’t show him the perfumes, which are new since then :-) .

I’m not a huge Kondo fan, but one thing I did find useful in her book was to do the big tidying by category rather than location. This might not be relevant for everyone, but I have books, perfume, clothes and makeup everywhere, and it really helps to see it all together and realise how much stuff you have.

There must be something to “winter cleaning”. I Marie Kondo’d my closet and shoes (having already done this in the summer, I was surprised to fill up two bags to donate!), I categorized my perfumes and samples in an Excel doc after accidentally ordering a sample I already have (oops), and I cleaned out the dreaded hall closet while putting xmas decorations away. I even labeled my spices in the spice drawer. Feels so good to start fresh – glad it wasn’t just me!!

I agree that it’s not a wow, but it’s in the ” no brainer” perfume category for me. I didn’t think much of it at first spray because of the lavender, but the subdued floral that follows is just “versatile”.

It’s beautiful here this morning but we will be too warm later today and then chilly tomorrow. We will continue the leaf raking project today, hopefully without the “assistance” of the gusty wind we had yesterday. The cats were enough help.
I’m giving the decants I packed a dissatisfied once-over and will probably wear Pan since it’s strong enough that I will be able to smell it through my allergies and is the best fit for the weather. Why didn’t I pack Tabac Tabou? It’s perfect for these golden days.

Hello! Back to work on this drizzly, cold day. I had a somewhat relaxing week and a half “off” (on call, but not really ;) ) from work. Talk about a lousy day to go back. It was all dark and gross out this morning and it’s only gotten worse – more rain!

I hope all the NSTers had fun filled holidays. I was rather sick most of the time with a sinus cold and now I’m getting over some sort of weird stomach bug, but I did have a really nice time despite all that. Having that big of a break was really needed. For the first time since the hubs and I have been together we spend NYE alone in the house. It was a bit surreal to me that we didn’t have plans with friends, but we didn’t mind. We played board games, drank cocktails and then promptly went to bed after midnight.

I didn’t get any perfume for xmas, but I was spoiled rotten otherwise so I can’t complain. I also chopped off all my hair. I love it, but now I’m constantly cold! I need to invest in a lot of scarves and hats now.

I’m in Lyric Woman today and might be for the rest of the week since it’s only going to get colder out.

Back to work, waaaaaaah! And the weather is chilly and drippy here, too.

SOTD is SP Parfums Violet Moss. LT raved about the dry-down in this one; guess I’ll be finding out in a while :) I certainly love the dry-down in his Sunmilkflowers. This scent went on quite the journey to get here; it left Germany at the end of November, and reached California just before New Years! DHL did the European leg of the journey efficiently, but then it got lost (and wasn’t ever scanned) somewhere in the USPS system. We’d given it up for lost, but it finally arrived, unharmed.

So far I’m getting slightly vintage-y violet. Nice.

Congratulations on your happy ending with the USPS. I can think of four times in the past couple years when perfume packages were delayed as well as a couple samples that never arrived from across the country or overseas. But I don’t give up hope easily. I sent out a swapmeet package that took an entire month to reach it’s destination. That was a nail-biter.

On the drive home from Christchurch we stopped at the Orari domain to let the dogs run around. Like most South Island domains it was simply a grazed paddock sheltered by mature trees…in this case lime ( linden) trees in full flower. I picked some and they are now drying on the table and will be used for tisane. My childhood home was surrounded by lime trees and it is always the smell of Christmas for me. Morning here…just sprayed Jo Malone Nutmeg and Ginger and am dipping into a few bedside John Berger books. What a great writer.

My advice? If you like soap and are willing to wait to see coupon codes on retailmenot then hold out before you buy anything…I usually check to see if there are any coupon codes that don’t require a minimum purchase…then I will buy a soap and get a travel spray of whatever is being offered for free…also , the shipping is free. So for twenty dollars you get a great soap and 9ml of a travel spray…this is how I have acquired 8 different Jo Malones and I like the small size travel sprays….just a suggestion :)

I’ve never smelled cumin in it. It smells like an unripe banana peel and some white flowers to me. Nothing really raunchy to my nose either. I think it smells similar to Ostara.

SOTD- Chanel 19 edt as I desperately needed to wake up and get myself going.
After I made myself a cup of coffee, I realized that there was no half and half left. Instead I added 2 huge tablespoons of vanilla ice cream and it worked for me :)

I haven’t tried yogurt and I probably never will since there is always vanilla ice cream in my freezer. Well, most of the time… :)
A combination is very interesting and tasty and one doesn’t have to wait until ice cream melts.

Today I wore Sud Magnolia, because I had a dentist appointment this morning and wanted something pleasant but unobtrusive. I biked there, straight north into some pretty significant wind, and then I went to the grocery store after – so I think I’ve accomplished enough today, you know?

No time to read the comments this morning – I’ve been busy confessing to Donatella and reading everyone’s wonderful lists or admiring their restraint.

It’s back to work for me this morning after a week and a half – and of course the weather looks better this morning than it has for days. Chamade will go well with the green and yellow floral dress I’m wearing in the hope that the weather will be reasonable.

I’m wearing Marni today and drinking some apple cinnamon tea.

Last night, my son and daughter-in-law had us over for dinner. They have the cutest, sweetest cat and I think she was mesmerized by my perfume. I wore Eau de Rochas last night, and she kept hanging around me, jumping on the arm of my chair for most of the night. I’m not complaining at all. She’s adorable.

Its funny though, I’ve read comments on here before about cats liking certain perfumes. I think I have read them here.

I don’t have much experience with cats (we’ve always had dogs), and when I noticed this last night, it was very funny.

I think you did, indeed mesmerize her. Eau de Rochas is some good stuff.

My late, lamented kitty loved anything with amber in it. She’d sniff my arm like it was catnip.

My cats are quite picky. There are things they love and lick assiduously off my wrist, others at which they put up their little noses, and yet others that they must frantically lick off themselves if I’ve polluted them. The latter, fortunately, is rare.

Headachey, off colour, and in the category of “This symptom is so silly I must be imagining it”, my tongue, mouth and throat are burning, as though I’ve eaten mouthfuls of pepper or taken huge gasps of a burning gas or something equally improbable. My perfume today has to soothe and calm, so it’s Bel Respiro, and I must say it’s working. I love it. It doesn’t smell rural –that would involve animals and manure and shearing and hot sun and hay. What it smells like is countryside–gardens spilling lushly out into meadows, and soft grass and breezes and cool shade. Yet it is not unsophisticated: it is styled to be simple, if you know what I mean. I can’t describe it well, but it’s ringing my bell today. When you need Chanel, you need it, and nothing else will do!

I’m competing with Mrs Meyer’s Iowa Pine that was generously sprayed in the kitchen. Country music on the Sonos… makes me wish I was in a road trip. Country is car music.

My SOTD has nothing to do with this week’s theme. I am wearing “Wild Fig & Cassis” by Jo Malone. I usually like to wear this when the weather starts to get cooler. It was chilly this morning, so I thought, “why not?” To my dismay, I realized that I only had a few drops of this left and finished off my FB. This scent was discontinued, so I was sad to throw my bottle out. Although I have found a few “fig” scents that I enjoy wearing, none of them can replace my WF&C.

Hi everyone! I’ve been reading the daily SOTD posts for a few weeks now and figured I had better join in :) It’s so fun reading about how you all sniff, and the weather where you are, etc etc! Thanks for making my days better :)

I’m wearing Bois des Iles because it’s the first day back to work after 2 weeks off – so hard! We have a new boss after being without for 1.5 years (omg! we had an interim but still!) so I wanted something that makes me feel strong, confident and classy. I also always think of the Guide’s comment that Bois des Iles is the brunette sister of No. 5. Being a brunette, I quite like it!!

In Parfums 06130 Lys today – I don’t even like water lily but I love this one more every time I wear it. I think it’s the coriander, also the drydown is really fresh and springy. Great for a bright but freezing-cold day like today.

My entire perfume “collection” is samples from Luckyscent. I am fairly new to fragrance and there is just so much to smell! I’ve probably tried 150 scents so far. I’m a student, so I’m not able to buy bottles if I’m to keep my sample habit up. If I really like one I just get another sample.

I’d like to try fragrances that aren’t offered on Luckyscent. I’ve never smelled Shalimar or Joy. Does anyone have recommendations for places to procure vintage samples, or suggestions for scents I really ought to try?

Surrender to Chance and The Perfumed Court are the most popular decanting sites in the US, and they offer a wide selection of vintage and modern samples and decants. There’s also ScentSplit, Decantshop, PerfumeSamplesandDecants, ebay, and Facebook groups, and many perfume houses sell samples as well. Several stores sell samples, like Twisted Lily and Indigo Perfumery. There’s a freebie meet coming up here on NST on January 21st where you might find something you’re interested in, and for suggestions on what to try, check out the Perfumista Lists, Favorite Posts and Resources here on NST.

I’ve probably forgotten about a billionty other things, but this should get you started. Welcome to the rabbit hole! :)

Day 2 of Aedes de Venustas and inspired (or rather, prompted) by yesterday’s review I changed my planned order and wore “Cierge de Lune” today. It definitely smells just like a flower blooming in the desert would – I’m 230km from the nearest desert in Tabernas and would smell nothing, and that’s just what I got from this one.

    Top: musk and powdery notes
    Mid: vanilla, black pepper, pink pepper, ylang-ylang and hedione ;
Base: suede, incense, amber, musk and ambroxan.

File under ‘Breaking News: a person anosmic to musk failed to smell a musk perfume earlier today’. :^D

    SOTD = Cuir Beluga

I’m back from my short trip to London. I have Wednesday off to catch up and then it is wahhhh, back to work on Thursday. I already know which perfume I must wear.

My faith in airline food was restored. We were served Loseley Honey and Stem Ginger vanilla ice cream – there’s macerated ginger with honey. So delicious…now I’ll be obsessed with finding a U.S. distributor.

    Things I wish I bought but didn’t:

    https://www.fortnumandmason.com/products/hd-alice-tea-for-one
(really cute Alice in Wonderland themed teapot, cup and saucer set; the teapot sits atop the cup).

    https://www.vam.ac.uk/shop/david-bowie-is-a-face-in-the-crowd-exhibition-bag-120182.html

Traveller’s tip – turn clothes inside out and sort by color when packing to go home from a trip.

    Home sweet home.
