Tuesday scent of the day 12/27

Posted by Robin on 27 December 2016 156 Comments

Eva Solo My Big Teapot

Happy Tuesday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I am feeling marginally better, but I'm still sick enough that it isn't worth wearing fragrance.

Reminder: on 12/30 we're doing the Best of 2016 — wear one of your favorite fragrance releases of 2016.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016 (or Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2017), where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: shown is the Eva Solo My Big Teapot, "an all-in-one teapot and tea cosy", shown in pink stripe, $115 at Danish Design Store.

    Found a mini of original Organza Indecence yesterday in antique store and so far not in love. It’s very interesting and well done but the sum total is that I smell like pudding.

        Oh, only $4 thankfully. I’m sure I’ll be able to swap it away next swapmeet.

    We have a tacky gift yankee swap at work. This year I was the lucky recipient of a coffee mug wrapped in what looked like an ugly christmas sweater. It’s not nearly as cute as the teapot cozy above. I hope you feel better soon Robin.

      Ha, those are always fun but then you’re stuck with the actual item! Do people ever save things and bring them back the next year? (That does happen with our family swap.)

      My friends and I get together the first Saturday after New Year’s to do the Yankee swap. We had to impose a no broken/used items. Our game has a twist at the end in that there is either no twist, pass your gift to the left or pass your gift to the right so there’s also a lot of jockeying for position and other strategizing.

        We all put $1 each n a pot and the person with the tackiest gift wins the pot. So there is incentive. The first winner several years ago was a yodeling pickle. The winner also has to display a trophy that we made from a painted wooden base with a giant Capodimonte vase screwed into it. It is also bedazzled. It is quite hideous. ????

    Robin, marginally better is still a little better. Hope it fully disappears way before the New Year! That tea cosy is so cute. The stripes remind me of a beloved Eddie Bauer turtleneck :-)

    SOTD = Guerlain Neroli Outrenoir

    Like cazaubon, I am boycotting the puff atomizer bottles. I smelled this on paper several times at Bergdorf and I liked it better each time. I finally caved and got a La Goutte Parfumee 20 mL travel spray. Heaven! and appropriate for a warmer day during the holidays with its neroli, tea and vanilla notes. It does have the feel of L’AP Seville a l’Aube but without the lavender and incense. The travel spray including shipping was under $50 each and is cheaper than getting the equivalent volume in the regular-sized FB. I got mine via Shopfranceinc.

    I am technically on vacation but will be working a few hours today and tomorrow in an effort to leave for my short trip to London with a clearer conscience and to not feel so overwhelmed when I return to work next Thursday. Having said this, I am plotting my perfume sniffas and it looks like I can visit Jo Loves and Ormonde Jayne without going too much out of my way. Liberty of London also looks like a possibility.

    Unrelated to perfume but I think I may get some recommendations from this group – I’m looking for a medical alert system for my mom. Since she is home alone most of the time, our biggest fear is that she falls and no one is home to help her. Please email me or leave a comment here as I think a few of us have some form of eldercare responsibilities. Thank you.

      Since I am in Canada, the medical alert systems are probably different where you are, but it was important to me to get one that would detect if my mom fell. Some work only if she were able to press the button, but this one works if she fell and became unconscious or whatever. Good luck. My 90 year old mother is moving to a nursing home tomorrow for a month of crisis care – it’s not pretty.

        I hope the move goes well. I have been asking some co-workers for recommendations too. Some services include a call from the company at a predetermined time. I also need to get over my concern about leaving a set of keys in a lockbox as that could signal to outsiders that either the home is for sale and could be empty or that someone inside is vulnerable and needs such a service.

      I got a couple of those Gouttes myself, from Shopfranceinc – Neroli Outrenoir, and Ambre Eternel. 20ml is just the perfect size.

      Hajusuuri, if you like tropical scents, do try Mango Thai Lime if you get to the Jo Loves store. A friend sent me a sample — it’s very fun.

      Enjoy London! I’m hoping you have some great weather while you’re visiting.

      FYI, some insurance companies will cover the cost and setup of the device, but not the monthly fees, so be aware of that. Plus, in order for these devices to work, they must be worn 24/7. I know that sounds like a no brainer, but you would be amazed how many people take them off at night or only wear them when they’re sitting in front of the TV and not moving. Ideally, it should water proof as well so they can be worn in the bath/shower area which is a high risk area. Most elderly folks get up (often multiple times) in the middle of the night to use the restroom. The device is on their bedside table, they get up and completely forget put the device ON in their hurry to get to the restroom, shuffle off in the dark and trip over a slipper or something. Down they go. There is also a lot of false alarms with those type of devices. None of them are fool proof. Astoundingly, I have come across patients who have fallen and they live WITH someone in the home, but that someone doesn’t even hear it. The poor person has been on the floor all night until they are found in the morning. Sometimes a bedside commode and a night light work better than a fall device because the used the BSC is PROactive and the use of the alarm is REactive. Not saying it’s not a worthwhile investment, but only that it’s not foolproof and there are other modifications to be considered. Probably more than you ever wanted to know, but I hope it helps keeps your mom safe and injury free.

      I don’t know much about medical alert systems, but I do have a good tip for anyone who needs to move a relative into assisted living or a nursing home. If you live in a metro area with a lot of options and are having trouble choosing one you are comfortable with, find someone (relative/friend of a friend – ask around) who works at one of the facilities and ask them which facility is the one everyone wants to work at. That’s generally the best one in your area.

    Back to the grind today, it’s almost 60 degrees, and I’m wayyy overdressed. I’m wearing Lalique le Parfum.
    I smelled CLEAN Cashmere at Sephora during my Christmas shopping and I was wracking my brain to figure out what it smelled like and it occurred to me this morning when I was sniffing through things to figure out my SOTD: L’Eau d’Hiver!! Has anyone smelled it? I might go score a sample to do a side-by-side because I’m almost done with my FM travel spray and this might be a less expensive replacement if I think I’ll want more in the future.

      I got a sample of Clean Cashmere with one of those gift bags Sephora gives out sometimes. Normally I don’t keep the perfume samples that come in those bags, but for some reason I held onto CC even though I never actually tried it on my skin. Sounds like I need to go home and give it a shot, though

        True as I prefer to be too warm than too cold although just right is ultimately just right. The decor on some of the homes was over-the-top outrageously fugly. As are some of those McMansiins on those tiny lots. Lots of spectators as well.

    I will be celebrating Christmas again today with a couple other relatives that I didn’t get to celebrate Christmas. So I probably will be getting more Christmas money. Nobody in my family does Christmas shopping, it’s just giving money. I will be spending that money on perfume. Does anyone know if L’Heure dentist Nuit has been discontinued? Neiman Marcus, Saks, Bergman say it’s sold out. My back up choices are SDV, Liu, or Tonka Imperial. My SOTD is L’Heure dentist Nuit. Maybe I should get SIM instead.

    Back to work today. The office is almost empty since more people are away. Therefore, I thought that my week was going to be pretty light and easy, like every year at this time. But for my disappointment as soon as I arrived this morning I found an email from my boss, who is on vacation, letting me know that I was assigned to finish one of those tricky and complicated projects by Friday next week. The amount of work is terrifying and I wish I could run away. SOTD is SL Chergui and honestly this is not working for me anymore considering the stress I am handling now. I wish I could be in something more relaxing and easy to wear. Patience!!!! (sigh)

    Coromandel for extended family Christmas celebration. The party will be wonderful – many of these people are my favourite humans on the planet, but then I have to go to my mom’s and move her to a nursing home. There is a waiting list a year long, so this will only be for a month of crisis care and then heaven knows what we will do. She has lived in the same house for 70 years and she is devastated at having to leave so this will be hard.

      I love, love, love Coromandel. I hope it gives you support as you go through this difficult time. Are there care-givers nearby who might be able to come to help her in her home? I know it’s expensive but that might be an option. My aunt and uncle had that as they became increasingly debilitated and were both able to be home until they passed.

      I’ve found, from family experience as well as doing home health work, that elderly folks are suspicious of caregivers they don’t already know. Coupled with the disorientation of a move – especially after 70 years! – I think it would be helpful to work up a schedule of relatives to visit her frequently. If you have relatives nearby, of course. Best of luck, ScentSpirit.

    People may be tired of my ongoing raves about the samples in my gift-to-self packet from April Aromatics but I am trying the last one today, Unter den Linden, and it’s just beautiful! I saved it to last because I’ve found linden can be cloying and sneeze-inducing, but this is just fresh and pretty, with a tiny honey note. There is not a bad one in the whole set and I have not been this excited about discovering a new line for a long time. Today is catch-up day after Christmas rushing around, a day to do laundry and go buy cat food and generally just relax. It’s still unusually warm here in Houston–we broke the record yesterday with 85 degrees. Kind of disgusting really! And very very humid.

      UdL is probably the best linden perfume that I’ve ever tried (and I tried many others since linden is one of my favorite scents in nature). I haven’t bought it yet only because I’m working on persuading myself that I should pay that price for a day-wear perfume. But eventually I will give up.

      Sorry for your weather. I know some folks revel in warm temps and high humidity, but it really just saps my energy completely. I always look forward to fall/winter, but those seasons have become nonexistent the past couple of years, it seems.

    Robin, ugh — I’m sorry you’ve been unwell over the holidays! I hope marginally better turns into gloriously hetter very soon.

    I’m in Palissandre d’Or today, for the sole reason that I couldn’t remember what it smelled like. Now, nose to wrist, I’m still finding it hard to pin down, which is the case with me and several of the AdV scents. Incense, Jeffrey pine, something sweet? I’ve also dug out a few neglected lovelies that need to be in heavier rotation now that it’s officially winter, and set them out for the week: Ambre Sultan, Dzongkha, Liquid Crystal, Fille en Aiguilles… I spend so much of the year in citrus colognes, but now is the time to justify the rest of my collection!

      I find it very strong, so I dilute it by mixing it in my hands with an unscented body oil — three sprays unscented to one spray Amber Flush. So it’s very cost-effective, for me! It’s a nice, warm amber like Amber Flash — more woody than strident.

    Howdy-hi, NST! This is one of my favorite times of year, the week before the new year begins, a time to dust off the cobwebs (at home and in the brain) then have a little think-think-think about past days and fresh starts.

    I’m spending the morning getting to know 24 Faubourg edt. Just a bit haughty at first, but so far it feels like a winner.

    Have a terrific Tuesday everyone, and take good care (naps, tea, and TV) if you’re fighting the crud.

    Hello NST folk, and I hope you have had/ are having a good Christmas. I am catching up on sleep and otherwise doing very little. SOTD today is Eau d’Italie “Sienne l’Hiver”, the perfect Winter scent if you don’t want to go all cozy or spicy. :^)

    Otherwise my Christmas scents have been:
    – Christmas Eve: Olibère “Escapade à Byzance”, which I love although it gets little attention elsewhere.

    Top: cinnamon, black pepper, saffron, thyme, ginger and citruses;
    Mid: cloves, cypress and incense;
    Base: benzoin, heliotrope, musk, vanilla, patchouli, amber, cedar and vetiver.

    – Christmas Day: Parfums d’Empire “Ambre Russe” from the bottle I got myself on my last day in Paris.

    Top: champagne and vodka;
    Mid: tea, cinnamon, coriander, birch, juniper and leather;
    Base: incense, musk and amber.

    – St. Stephen’s Day: Annick Goutal “Encens Flamboyant” – happily got in and out of town before the craziness of the sales had really started.

    Top: incense, pink pepper, pepper and red berries;
    Mid: nutmeg, incense, cardamom and sage;
    Base: balsam fir, incense and mastic.

    Feel better, Robin!

    After having gone a month or two without reading NST, I’ve fallen out of the habit altogether :-/ I wonder if I’ll get back in the habit when I go back to France.

    Still hanging out in my parents’ house in Maryland, eating my mother’s fabulous cooking, enjoying the luxuries of not living like a poor student. There are flowers and plants everywhere, even in December. My mother’s fat, bush-like jasmine plants are still flowering somehow, perfuming one side of the sunroom. The other side and the breakfast area are drenched in the scent of paperwhites, and only about 1/3 of her paperwhites are in bloom so far!! Absurd and wonderful.

    I myself smell of l’Arlésienne from the body oil I used after my shower last night and from the lovely hand cream I put on a couple hours ago.

    Back to work I go! Working on my paper from here, in a flowery sunroom in suburban Maryland, is much less panic-inducing than working on it in France.

    Morning, all. I’m still in bed, feeling utterly decadent, because it’s nearly 8 o’clock and I’m nearly always up and going by six! I read until after nidnight, something I don’t often do because I sleep so badly after midnight. Although I haven’t showered yet, I sprayed Galop lavishly so I could enjoy it while I ate my breakfast, so Dakkie and me, we smell heavenly as we loll about in bed. No idea what I’ll wear when I get dressed, but I’m toying with the idea of choosing a house and systematically working my way through all the perfumes I have and keeping notes and stuff. That sounds quite depressingly organised and structured for holiday time, though…nah. I think I’ll just reach blindly and see what happens. Be well, NST. Hope sufferers turn the corner to wellness today.

    The JM Mimosa & Cardamom I put on last night was (surprisingly) still going strong in the morning. I was living off its last whiffs until just a moment ago, when I found a foil sample of AERIN Tangier Vanille tucked in a mailer. I impulsively rubbed some on my wrists in spite of not being a huge fan of vanilla or amber, but I am finding it surprisingly likable. There were lovely whiffs of bergamot and rose at the beginning, then the amber blends seamlessly into the creamy, slightly woodsy(sandalwood?) vanilla. This might need further investigation :-)

    p.s. get better soon Robin!

    Switched to Stash later in the day, which I’m enjoying more each time I wear it.

    I’ve hesitated to admit this here, it’s such a downer, but I’ve had that cold 4 times now. Up side: it gets shorter each time. I’m down to 4 days from 3 weeks. Sorry, Robin, that’s the best I can do. Feel better soon!
