Monday scent of the day 12/12

Posted by Robin on 12 December 2016 228 Comments

Poinsettia

It's Monday (don't you hate it when that happens?) and it's Frank Sinatra's birthday, and it's National Poinsettia Day. What fragrance are you wearing?

Update: it is the sort of Monday where I do not even notice that I didn't report my own fragrance until an hour later, even though I spent some considerable time picking it this morning. I'm in Dries Van Noten par Frédéric Malle.

Reminder: on 12/16, wear a sandalwood fragrance, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Beautiful photo once again! And happy birthday to Frank!

Hoping everyone is safe and warm in the areas affected by the winter storms. Summer is back again here, sadly. Is there no happy medium weather wise anymore? Sheesh. Monday’s are great for complaining ????

SOTD was Amber Flush Body Oil for early am dental appointment to get my brand new and outrageously expensive crown. Added the last dribble of MFK Grand Soir from my sample and will spend the afternoon haggling the price of a van. Fun times!

    Happy Monday to All????

I’m usually underwhelmed by cheap thrills, but I do like Perles. I like it layered with Theo Fennell Scent, and it would probably work well with other smooth scents, such as ambers.

SotD: SL Santal de Mysore from an elderly bottle (mid-late 90s). It has calmed down to a spicy, sweet, leather caramel with a bit of curry. It is loud, but I am working largely alone in the office today.

S(ip)otD: Satispur Estate Assam from Upton with a bit of almond milk.

SOTD Byredo 1996. The opening makes me swoon. I can’t stand the amber/vanilla onslaught though. Not that it’s objectively bad; it’s just a combination that I dislike. I get whiffs of lovely smoky leather beyond the amber/vanilla.

    I’m in Cuir d’Ange today.

I went on a perfume buying frenzy. This tends to happen each December when I have the extra money. Nothing too exciting, just some that I wanted to add as staples: L’ombre Dans L’eau, L’Orpheline, and Dior Homme. I’m justifying it (ok, not really) because I was so good in using up 90% of all my samples throughout the rest of the year.
I’m fairly certain I’ll get Ormonde Woman for xmas, which is the only other one on my WANT list.

Oh, nice! My bro-in-law gave me his Canon DSLR a few years back which I’ve only used as an auto since the instruction manual is too daunting. I keep meaning to take a DSLR class I see offered near me. It’s always on the long list of things I want to learn.

Nice! Which model is it? I’m selling mine (Canon EOS T2i) and getting a mirrorless camera because it’s smaller. I used to do a lot more photography, but I’ve come to admit I’m more of a casual photographer than serious, so I want something that has quality that’s on par with a DSLR but a lot less camera to lug around.

SOTD so far is a sample I’m trying of Perfums de Marly Oajan. It is too syrupy and cloying for me. Smells like a nice baked apple but not what I want to carry around on me all day. So I hope it’ll vanish after my shower and I’ll try something else. For sandalwood day I will try to eke out a few drops from my precious bottle of the sadly discontinued MPG Santal Noble. I wish I could find more, to me it’s the perfection of all sandalwood scents.

Cold rainy Monday, but not cold enough to get snow. :( Two cups of coffee with Pumpkin Spice coffee creamer, in a Pfaltzgraff Christmas Heritage cup (smaller than my usual large coffee mug!). Wearing Memoir Woman. Dog curled at feet. Could be much, much worse.

Fresh-cut Christmas tree is up and decorated with lights but nothing else yet due to holiday concerts for me and Gaze. Just put the stockings up; our only mantel* is over the fireplace in the basement family room so we tie the stockings onto the banister next to the tree in the foyer.

*Yes, mantel is the correct spelling. Yes, I’m sure. :) “Mantle” is a cloak or covering, thus the lyric, “Over the ground lies a mantle of white.” ‘Scuse my pedantry if you will, and please don’t shoot me for the earworm.

I’m wearing Ormonde Jayne Nawab of Oudh and I like it. I don’t get much oud (not too sad about that), but among the notes I do get are magnolia and cardamom – yay! It’s very well blended, though, nothing really stands out. I feel no need for a full bottle, but will gladly wear my sample.

Herba Fresca to start the day. It’s bright and sunny and supposed to get up to 70f today. I have sewing/craft projects to work on that require drizzly, wintry weather or they just feel wrong. Guess I will mow the lawn instead.
On a completely un-perfume note, my cousin lost her Weimaraner last week in a freak accident and really needs to have another. Caring for her dogs has always been one of her greatest joys. If anybody knows of or hears of a Weimaraner or Vizsla rescue resource that I haven’t found, we are looking for a female 3 years old or younger and cat safe. Somewhere in the central part of the US would be preferable, within a days drive of Texas or Missouri, but we can make a longer trip if necessary. I know it’s a big order, but her pets are her family and she is absolutely devastated so any tips would be appreciated.

Solstice Scents Estate Carnation from a little decant my big sister gave me.

Need to spend morning repairing the damage from going through space bags to find the winter gear and then refill them with the summer gear. My husband has a LOT of sweaters. He sent me a link to a red cable knit one as a suggestion for Christmas. Newp. No more sweaters for you. Winter clothes take up more space, so any new stuff means get rid of old. I swear, I must have 20 apairs of wool socks from years of receiving them as presents.

???????? I would, if his sweaters were the size of perfume bottles. I’m limiting my collection to a particular cabinet so it can’t expand beyond that.

He’s getting a big bottle of Colonia for Christmas. But his clothes are out of control. He has way more than I do. I, admittedly, have more handbags. We may be tied on shoes.

He’s the one excited about both gift giving and receiving. I’m the one who is indifferent on that front. I honestly would prefer to just spend money doing things rather than buying things….

Limiting to a cabinet is a good way to collect. And agree, sweaters take up space. Plus, eventually, moths.

Snow day today. Staying home and unmotivated. I was watching a YouTube video, and was inspired to retry my sample of TM Chyprissime. Mostly what I get is Off bugspray. I’m convinced I should like this, and will try again, with less sprays next time.

We got a dusting of snow last evening. Sigh. I’m in a work-friendly amount of Tauer Au Coeur du Desert today. The more I wear it, the more I love it and I think it’s my favorite Tauer. I want to try layering it with Rose Delight one of these days.

Rose Delight is one of my favorite body oils. Doesn’t hurt my sensitive skin at all and the scent is long lasting.

I was happy when I saw the snow, but of course in NYC if its just a dusting its basically never reaches the ground ;)

    1) And back in the office! It’s nice to be back amongst other humans! I love my house, and decorated Charlie Brown tree, but there is something about being in an office with other humans,a ll working together.

    2) In Velvet Rose and Oud. As it turns out I have a a couple of more sample bottles of these, so I am bound and determined to use them up, then prolly buy a bottle for fall/winter next year.

I wanted to wear Bois des Isles today but I’ve got too much d@mn other product blocking it on the shelf. Some of you may remember I am selling at least 10 perfumes this month and cleaning house…neither has happened yet but I’ve got 3 weeks left and big plans. ;)

So instead of Box of Eels I grabbed an easily accessible sample of McQueen. A big white tuberose floral. Carnal Flower is so lovely and my reference tuberose fragrance that I don’t really seek out others. McQueen seems derivative overall to my nose. Many, many reviews on Fragrantica say it is identical to Truth or Dare which I haven’t smelled but can be found for cheap. I was hoping for something interesting but this is not it.

Good morning hard working elves. I’m just back from a mother/mother in law visit to the big smoke (Christchurch) . Managed to sample El and Ella … Quite good but the 100ml bottle put me off as usual. I ended up going against the grain and bought Jo Malone Mimosa and Cardamon which is a pretty, powdery spice…almost a soft floral chai tea. In a sensible 30ml. I also got a pair of bright powder blue Dr Martens in soft leather and am reading Andrei Makine’s A Woman Loved, a novel about a Russian filmmaker trying to do a film about Catherine the Great. So, the sun is shining and today I will try and assemble the driftwood I collected on the drive home into the semblance of a Christmas tree. And work. Happy, busy days.

Really, perfumers ought to think a bit more about perfume names. I’ve just recently purchased ‘Sex Magic’ from House of Matriarch, which is actually a delicious wood/leather thing, yet sports a name I’m never going to say if someone asks me “what is that perfume you’re wearing?” I’d suggest a simple test: if a 14-year-old boy would snigger at the name, Pick A Different Name.

I wish I could wear Dries Van Noten but it has what thegoddessrena described as “exploding musk”. Given the choice between being able to. breathe vs smelling good, I chose the former :-)

    SOTD = Diptyque Volutes EDP

I wanted to do a full week of sandalwood but really wanted to wear Volutes EDP as it fits the weather. (snow that turned into rain despite the cold). We’re lucky the ground is still warm enough to not ice over. In a way, Volutes could fit the theme if you consider the voyages that inspired it — the ships must have something made with sandalwood!

I tried 4 out of 9 Jo Loves samples and we have a winner even if I end up not testing the other 5 (but I will) — Smoked Plum and Leather –“liquorish” macerated plum, warm spices and leather! The other ones I tried were:
Pomelo – nice grapefruit up top, tenacious vetiver. The grapefruit lasted barely an hour but the vetiver survived make-up wipe and one round of washing with Tecnu (I wanted to scrub it off to try more samples). If I didn’t already have Pomelo Paradis and Sycomore and Demeter Vetiver, this would have been a contender.
    – Red Truffle 21: I’m not chi chi enough nor do I cook to know what truffle smells like. This one also has pine and fig and pepper which lasted for < 1 hour. Pass.
    – No. 42 The Flower Shop: I had the highest hope for this one but it failed the worst. It smelled like bitter flowers and, as luck would have it, also tenacious and couldn't be scrubbed off.

Thank you for the Jo Loves rundown. Such fun! Your reaction to Pomelo reminded me of trying Eau de Pamplemousse Rose recently. The citrus top was fabulous but there was something in the base that was too much for me, maybe it smelled of something like vetiver, I wish I could remember.

Very good morning, all. Last week at work, and I’ve never been happier to see the end of a year approaching. Kanuka, I saw those same Doc Martens, and fell for them instantly. They’re fab! I nearly bought them, but began to wonder about some pink floral ones instead.

I’m wearing the soft golden glow of Fate today–sooooo pretty. It’s a warm scent, which is find because the silly weather has got distracted from doing summer and has dropped back into spring. This thing with irresolute seasons is getting really quite tiresome! Anyway, grumbling over, I smell really nice, and after I get a dreary meeting with the dean out of the way, the day will turn super, because one of doctoral students, graduating tomorrow, has very kindly invited me to lunch with his and brand new baby. Baby’s name is Anahera, which means “Angel”. She’s a serious little soul, very good, which is just as well, because her mama is completing her doctorate as well.

    Be well, NST everywhere.

Fate is lovely, but one that I continue to dither over, it’s been on and off my list of future purchases so many times – it’s on the list of possibles at the moment.

Sort of spring here today, yesterday started off beautifully, then turned totally horrible by lunchtime – I was badly underdressed. Starting off well again today, so will go with Rose Alexandrie, a light rose, sweet, but not too sweet.

Today is so dreary. It’s cold, and grey, and a bit rainy. I have a slight cold, and spent a bunch of the weekend at a memorial service for a friend who recently passed away (at the young age of 40, ugh.)

SOTD is Oriza Legrand Oeillet Louis XV. The sharp carnation/clove is just searing enough that I can smell it and it is bringing a bit of spicy warmth to the day.

This morning I wore Lyric before my shower, and that was enough of sweet. I was recently looking through leather compilations, and one of them mentioned Xerjoff XJ 17/17 Homme, which I hadn’t really tried yet. So that’s what I’m sampling now. It seems to be a fairly strong and rubbery leather, basically what I’d expected from Bulgari Black or Etro Gomma. It reminds me of some of the old no holds barred Lanvins, like Pretexte. I’m in the mood for it. ;)

    SOTD- Chanel Coco edp.
I wanted to thank and send warm hugs to the all NST girls who gave me advice on where to purchase long and short sleeve tees. As a result my shopping trips were bearable (hate to shop) and I was able to update my wardrobe. I got S/S tees from Gap, L/S tees and a skirt from J.Crew, turtlenecks from Ann Taylor and sweaters from Banana Republic.
I also treated myself with perfume- Hermes L’ADM (travel spray from fragrancenet for $ 20.99) AFTER I told myself that I should be on a NO BUY at least until next spring. Epic Fail! My NO BUY lasted only a week, but at least I didn’t spend too much…
    Happy Monday to ALL!

You’d think I’d be wearing sandalwood, since I do like it, but nope, I’m feeling amber-y. SOTD is Teo Cabanel Barkhane (thanks clarissa!) or it was, it seems to have mostly disappeared. Though I’m not making it easy on the poor perfume, seeing as the first thing I did was walk 1.5 miles from the auto mechanic’s to work. It’s kindof nice to move slowly along a route that I usually drive past. Some businesses have quite nice landscaping, if you have time to look at it. The fire department has a gorgeous cactus garden out front. And the redwoods along one road smelled lovely, all damp and evergreen-y.

Started off with a spritz of Micallef Rouge No. 2 but then added some Tauerville Tuberose Flash. If you are tuberose-phobic this could be a good starter tuberose, it’s actually very soft and not big-white-florally.
