Best Buy Friday is here! (And you'll all be so thrilled to hear that Pantone has announced the color of the year for 2017: Greenery.*) Our community project for today: wear your favorite fragrance purchase of 2016. If you didn't buy anything this year, pick a favorite from a prior year.
What fragrance did you pick? As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.
Everything I bought this year was something I really wanted, so I can't seem to pick a favorite. My hand went for the Hermès Eau de Néroli Doré, so that's what I'm wearing.
Reminder: on 12/16, wear a sandalwood fragrance, if you have one.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
* “We know what kind of world we are living in: one that is very stressful and very tense,“ said Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “This is the color of hopefulness, and of our connection to nature. It speaks to what we call the ‘re’ words: regenerate, refresh, revitalize, renew...” Read more at Color of 2017? Pantone Picks a Spring Shade at The New York Times.
Couldn’t decide between L’Artisan Aedes de Venustas and Serge Lutens De Profundis, so I didn’t! One on each wrist! 😀
Hahaha. Yes, I do that sometimes too 😉
L’Artisan Aedes is on my list of things to try. Thumbs up for De Profundis!!
very nice compromise 🙂
I bought only 2 scents this year (if I remember correctly, so much has happened that January seems ages ago), one is too springtime-ist (l’amandière), so it’s sandalo nobile today, it might be the same for next week’s challenge again, then
Ah, you were better behaved than me!
I tried that one on my trip to Rome, in the autumn, and it was my favourite of all the ones I sampled, gorgeous!
Commando at the moment but plan to wear Carthusia Mediterraneo later.
So you will smell great later 🙂
Was going to go with Safari (HEY. A backup bottle purchase in 2016 is still a purchase in 2016, right?), but since I’m spending the day with my mom, I decided on the vintage YSL Paris parfum mini instead.
Since she hurt her back (bulging disc, ow), she’s not up to decorating for Christmas, and my dad gets very tired easily these days so he’s not up to it either. I offered. 🙂 Now to make the hour drive… Have a great Friday, everybody.
You too Mals, and safe driving.
That’s nice of you. I always forget how much I love having decorations up. We didn’t bother last year because the kittens were too fast and full of evil, and the year before we were moving. My husband insisted this year and I’m glad he pushed me.
Kittens and Christmas–makes me grin just to think about it!
One of the girls has declared war on a particular ornament that I have had to remove. Other than that, we’ve had no incidents of tree-bothering. I was worried and didn’t put anything really breakable up since they look like adult cats and still act like little terrors.
Mr. Spicebomb is coming around to the notion that it would be good to get a kitten before my old man kitty is gone. The “middle child” would be lost and confused as an only. Very possible we will add a member to our family over the winter break!
You are reminded me that the trees we had growing up were *always* tied up and down, to ward off flying kitties and children.
No decorations at all for us this year; we have five foster kittens who are hooligans, rapscallions, ruffians! Also, very, very cute. But kittens and Christmas decorations are just not gonna mix.
Ha! We are trying to decide if at a year and a half ours will behave. We were thinking short tree, no breakable ornaments.
My dad used to wire his Christmas trees to the ceiling with a guy-wire, as we had a kitty who even in his more mature years would flatten his ears and launch himself full-force up the trunk!
MR, your description of the kitty’s assault on the tree made me laugh!
You smell fab anyway!
Arbolé Arbolé, one of several 2016 favorites. Calling All Angels may be even more of a favorite, but I wear it on specific occasions.
Looking forward to read everyone’s 2016 favorites!
You smell great. AA may be one for 2017.
As soon as my next paycheck arrives, I’m going to get travel sprays of this and Dilettante.
Excellent investments!
There is also something about those travel sprays that is so appealing. I really like the new packaging in general.
I look forward to trying this one after hearing all the raves.
Greenery is a lovely color! Interesting that green perfumes have also made a comeback. Coincidence?
SOTD is PdE Tabac Tabou, my favorite purchase of 2016. This, Chanel Misia and Byredo 1996 are my favorite perfume purchases of the past three years.
I love green but that particular shade is not working for me. Like the idea, though!
Funny you should say that. I had the same response. Prefer the darker patches of green lawn in the photo–but then how accurate is my monitor anyway?
Yeah, monitor accuracy is a problem, but have looked at lots of pictures of “Greenery”, pretty sure I don’t like it *and* don’t find it restorative.
The point of that was supposed to be that I looked at lots of pictures on 2 devices, then I left that out.
Yellowy greens really need to be lit up or translucent – new beech leaves and sunlit grass are beautiful but a plain block of opaque colour just isn’t.
My best purchase of the year was my FB of Acqua di Sale by Profumum Roma. So gorgeous for summer time. However, I am wearing Narciso Rodriguez For Her because I was craving for an easy and pretty chypre scent on this cold day.
Acqua de Sale is a great summer fragrance. Thank you for introducing me to it
Glad to hear that you like it! 🙂
Love. I am realizing that I really do wear perfume seasonally and this is pure summer to me.
Tough choice for me, but I ended up going with First EDP, which was a good buy in the sense of way cheaper than it had any right to be, and I adore it. But my real favorite thing I bought this year was probably a tiny bottle of vintage Fracas.
Two good buys! I love old Fracas.
TGIF!
SOTD: Miss Dior Original Extrait de Parfum.
This is one that I really enjoyed!
such a beautiful scent 🙂
This is a glorious perfume!
Surprisingly, Dior managed not to kill the beauty of this gem through all the travesties of stripping it of its original (pun intended) name. You smell great! (and I’m also happy the weekend is coming)
FRIDAY FRIDAY FRIDAY!!! Hoping to focus a bit on the holidays this weekend, by finishing up some decorating and maybe even baking a wee bit!
I had 2 top favorite purchases, and had to sniff them both a couple of time this morning to make my final decision! In 2nd place, Angel Innocent. I’ll give it some wear this weekend!
In 1st place, my SOTD of the day is…..drum roll……Bvlgari Black! I LOVE this one!!!
Angel Innocent is the only Angel I can wear. It really is very nice.
Lean over and let me get a whiff!
Mr. Spicebomb has drained the two large samples of Dans Tes Bras I’ve given him this year, and so I tucked my neglected bottle of Black in his toiletries (until I can rectify the situation). Keep hoping to sniff it on him! I love it, but I prefer it on others than myself.
I have some DTB for you if you like. I got 2 big decants in a swap recently, and can only imagine going through 1. Email me if you like…
Thanks, J!
Bvlgari Black is my runner-up for the year! So nice in cooler weather.
I wore Black two days ago (following all the mentioning of it on the SOTD posts recently) and was amazed again how beautiful it was. I’m thinking about getting a back-up bottle… I do not really need it but at the price it’s available, will I forgive myself later if I run out of it and won’t be able to get it without selling a kidney?
get it now!!!
Alahine was yesterday
Dzhongkha today !!!!
You smell great!
For me, TF ombré leather
We were scent twins yesterday (early Saturday morning here, and I’m catching up) we smelt wonderful!
My best purchase for 2016 was a tie between Patou 1000 and Guerlain’s Rose Nacrée du Désert. I chose the latter. I can’t say I’m actually able to smell anything as I’ve got a cold and my nose has gone on holiday. Apart from that I’m absolutely fine. I hope everyone has a great weekend!
Hope it clears up soon, mine didn’t stay too long!
Get better soon! And know: you smell great! I can tell from here 😉
It seemed so pointless to apply any perfume, but who cares people need to be educated about olfactory greatness 😉
Right, you’re serving the community. Very noble of you!
Rose Nacrée is a beauty! Hope you get better soon.
Wow- Guerlain fan here too! The Rose’s notes sound beautiful. Whats your impression of it?
Hope your cold disappears soon! ????
http://boisdejasmin.com/2012/08/guerlain-rose-nacree-du-desert-perfume-review.html
All of this, and more!
Oh my. That last paragraph cinched it. Off to order a sample. Thank you Austenfan!
Hope you’re feeling better today, that one sounds like a beauty.
New Musk Man was my favorite purchase this year.
By who?
I bet it’s by Dame Perfumery (though I agree, it’s an ambiguous name)
That would be Dame Perfumery
Thanks guys!
My two favorite purchases this year were DSH Giverny in Bloom and Chanel No. 5 L’eau. Since I wore L’eau most of the time last week while on vacation, I chose to Giverny in Bloom today.
The entire DSH art project with Giverny in Bloom is perfect for the new Pantone 2017 Greenery theme. You smell great.
you are so right. I did not plan it that way, but it sure does 🙂
As predicted, I went with PG Cuir d’Iris. I actually waffled a little over today’s choice, and almost went with Barbara Bui … but in the end the PG won out. I apologize to those who get bleu cheese from this. 🙂
I have to try this Iris. I keep hearing about it, and somehow always forget to pick up a sample. How is the staying power – a lot of PG’s are pretty but fleeting on me 🙁
This one lasts well – usually 10 to 12 hours on me.
Pichola.
Tea is Dammann Freres 7 Parfums. I was up very early and had 2 cups of coffee. This is black tea with citrus and floral notes. It came in a gift package and I don’t know where to find more. ..Another reason to take a trip to France.
Fabulous. My bottle of Pichola arrived yesterday. Woo hoo!
You smell great
You smell lovely!
SotD = Après l’Ondée, definitely a favorite for 2016, but I almost wore Hiris. Hard to choose a favorite!
Wishing all of us fragrant folk a fabulous Friday!
I wore Apres l’Ondee yesterday! They are both so beautiful 🙂
I think your mention of Apres l’Ondee on Thursday is responsible for my wearing it today. It was hard to choose among my favorites.
You smell beautiful.
Thank you, completely agree that beautiful is the perfect word for Apres l’Ondee.
Every full bottle I bought this year would have qualified for today’s challenge but I awoke with a craving for Cuir de Lancôme. I suspect I would have worn it today even if it wasn’t on the list.
It’s good that you continue to feel happy about all your choices.
Can never go wrong with that one.
Yes, always a good cold weather choice!
Heavens to Betsy, I actually remembered the Community Project this Friday! Wearing Cartier Baiser Volé EdT (the green one) — but like you, R, didn’t buy much and only bought things I really wanted, so could have picked any of the three buys. Digging the Pantone colour, of course…
Good for you! (for remembering, and for only buying 3 things)
You can have the Greenery, I’ll stick with last year’s baby pastels 😉
Me, too. Last year’s colors reminded me of Joe Jackson’s “Steppin’ Out.” Made me smile every time I saw them somewhere.
Interesting, love that song!
Oh, duh, but still took me a minute to think of why! I get it.
Several favorites for 2016, but chose to wear Stash SJP today. The others are L’Envole de Cartier and Coromandel. I don’t have FB of the Cartier/SJP yet but will remedy that soon.
Cheers! 🙂
You got some beautiful stuff this year!
Me too RE: Stash. Awesome stuff.
Stash is gooooood stuff!!!
Oooo. Coromandel love! What great buys!
I have made very few purchases this year, in an effort to balance a little frugality with upcoming nuptials*, so those I have made were all things I was happy to buy. The best, though, due to fortunes smiling on me, is the bottle of 1960’s Chanel No. 5 edc, which is wonderful. The drydown is so pretty, it nearly makes me wanna cry. So that sounds like a good choice for the day!
*My wedding, by “typical American standards” (whatever that means), is still going to be frugal. However, my mother has deemed it extravagant, so I am regularly reminded that these things are a matter of perspective.
Sounds amazing. I am going to have to get my mitts on some No. 5 parfum and vintage EDC since they are so often raved about. I can imagine they must be lovely.
I found my bottle in an antique shop on the coast. Unopened, 4oz splash bottle, in the box, $100, which seemed like a steal to me! No. 5 has only recently wooed me with her charms, so I have yet to sniff it in parfum concentration. I have this old edc and a very recent edt. I like them both, but the drydown to the edc is really something special.
I love Chanel No.5 vintage cologne, I think it is my favorite of all the No.5’s I have. I found a big 200ml bottle years ago at an antique fair and it is one of my best buys ever. Enjoy yours.
Tough choice this morning as I bought more than I thought I did. Oops. Contenders were Vanilla Hinoki, Suleko Djelem, Barbara Bui (there were others but didn’t fit the cold weather). I went with Djelem today. It’s the perfect combo of cozy, pretty, interesting, and wearable! There’s this soft green/herbal thing going on in the opening and the drydown is sort of vanillic. My perception of what I smell doesn’t really match the note description for it, but it works for me.
On my way home last night, I found myself in a Space NK that just opened near me. I’m not a big lipstick person and just have a couple of safe, boring staples, but I’m totally besotted by the Lipstick Queen line! Such great, fun colors. I got Goodbye which is a sheer deep plummy/brown like Clinique’s Black Honey with some blue/green iridescence. Nice texture and they’re pretty reasonably priced. Love it!
They also are carrying Byredo there so got samples of Rose Noir. I’m still not smitten by anything from that line, but the rose is nice.
Ditto on the Lipstick Queen, which has been my lippie love for several years. My colour of 2016 has been the Bête Noire sheer, but I also bought Eden at some point.
Those are both really nice.
must check those out
Oh the lipstick sounds interesting, I gotta try it out. I have discovered Colour Pop lippies a few month ago – amazing colors, and most importantly they are $6-8 per tube and the staying power lasts through eating!!!!
That’s an actual bargain as opposed to my relative bargain. Where did you find those? They look nice from the pictures.
I bought them online – I do not think they have a physical location. I bought Topanga, Tootisie, Let’s play, Tiger (which is amazing!!!), Lumiere, Julep + plus a couple of their pencils. I am very impressed – and between my expensive tube of Charlotte Tilbury and these, there is no difference.
I have to try them first since I’m so picky. But, yeah, one of my favorites that I own was like $8 from a beauty supply store in NYC called Ricky’s after buying several NARS and Bite that ultimately I didn’t quite love.
Lipstick Queen also has a couple of pricier sublines (?) that are to die for. I can’t remember the names, but packaging and colors are amazing and the lipstick soft and lovely.
I was kind of surprised that the one I got was “only” $24. I thought it would be much more. It was from the Butterfly Ball collection. I didn’t get prices on the others, though, so maybe mine was the low end of the spectrum. I love the rubberized metal packaging.
Yeah, I love “only” 24 dollars. Unfortunately for me, they go much higher, with some at 50 in these amazing heavy like a weapon architectural cases.
Is your Djelem a full bottle? If yes, how does it look? I was admiring their bottles on the pictures but weren’t sure how well-made they look in real life.
Lipstick Queen is one of my favorite lines recently (and I would have probably worn one of their lipsticks today had it been a “best lipstick buy of 2016 project” 😉 ).
I didn’t get one of the sculpture bottles but I did see them in person. They’re all really nice and look expensiveand like very well crafted porcelain. Djelem was actually my least favorite of the sculptures. I got the travel spray with pretty porcelain cap which comes with the 50ml refill bottle. It was the most economical option-still more juice than I wanted but other than the sample set, no smaller options.
I’m very particular about lipstick color/texture and it all has to be just right. There were so many contenders that worked well with my coloring. I also really like the metallics she has.
If you decide to go for a more expensive line (in silver casings), test well: those dark colors do not always cover well – but it depends on the wearer, I think. But all of the more sheer colors (including Goodbye that you mentioned – love and wear it; though it might be slightly cheaper to buy it from Amazon – if you do not need an instant gratification 😉 ) wear nicely.
I covered in a couple of posts on my blog several of the fun shades from this brand – if you’re curious, it’s not hard to find there.
Thanks for the info. I’ll check your blog, for sure. And good to know about Amazon, since my first choice “Sigh” from that collection wasn’t in stock at the shop.
Have to skip today’s community project and go with what the weather dictates instead. It’s best kind of winter day here in the swamps- grey, overcast, drizzly, with a chilly breeze. I’m in a fleece hoodie, so that says a lot! This is the kind of day that makes me want to hunker down, clean, cook, and bake. It makes me thankful for sturdy walls, a roof, and warm blankets. Not to mention a toasty dog that likes to snuggle!
SOTD was Philosophy Fresh Cream for spin class and now, post shower, I’m in Amber Flush Body Oil topped off with two comforting spritzes of Cuir Mauresque, sent to me by a kind NSTer.
To all who are facing frigid temps and blizzard like conditions, stay warm and drive safe, all the while wafting a great scent trail ????
You smell wonderful. What would you have worn, weather permitting?
Well probably no great surprise to anyone, it would have to be PdE Corsica Furiosa. I wore that to DEATH this summer!
I got a free sample of Corsica last summer and LOVED it. Wish it came in smaller bottles, though – I can’t justify 100 ml of anything right now.
Yes, that’s the reason I don’t have more from this line. So sad they stopped making the 50ml bottles because there’s so many I love! The only reason I DID buy CF is because I knew it would be a staple scent for my 9 months of endless summer…
Probably true for me too, but I do spray Corsica Furiosa with wild abandon in the dead heat of the summer and having the bigger bottle makes me not feel shy!
SOTD Frederic Malle Une Rose, which was my first full bottle purchase this year. I adore its damp mushroomy earthiness 🙂
I am going to have to retry this and sniff for earthy mushroominess. 🙂
Whoops. That’s mushroomy earthiness. 😀
Both work imo 😀
Just ordered a 10ml spray of this, hoping I love it, never sampled it before.
I hope you do! I especially love the drydown. That’s when the mushroominess really blooms for me.
I love dirty roses.
So good! You smell amazing.
I don’t get mushrooms thankfully, but I do get dirt/earthiness. You smell wonderful.
Marjorie Rose, congratulations to the upcoming wedding!
I’m wearing Vanille insensee from Ateier cologne today as it arrived today and I had to put it on immediatly.
It’ pretty great, but my best buy of 2017 is a tie betweeen Safran troublant and Seville a aube from L’Artisan.
Thanks, Anna! We got engaged in March, and the wedding isn’t until July. I kinda wish it was all done with already, but I am also glad we didn’t try to rush and have everything happen this summer. On a related note, my mother (in a sincere effort to be helpful) handed me her 1965 copy of Emily Post’s book on manners, in which is states that an “appropriate” length for an engagement is 3-6 months “during which time the bride and groom can become acquainted with each other.” 🙂
Well, I heartily agree that the bride and groom should become acquainted with each other! Keep us posted on the kitten situation. I shall live vicariously through you.
Haha. Well, yes. I would hope things would work out better for everyone involved that way!
I’ve been reading from the book when I need a break and a giggle. My favorite exerpts so far have been on wedding ettiquette, although the advice on throwing a dinner party is pretty great, too. (Did you know you’re supposed to have your butler call the guests’ chauffeurs for them? I’ve been doing it wrong all these years!)
Next spring, the NST group should throw MJ a virtual “shower” here. 🙂
That should be MR of course. Not dexterous enough to type and drink tea at the same time!
I like this idea!
Hey Anna! I’m not sure how to break it to you gently, but your time-traveler cover has been blown: we’re still talking about the best buys of the current year, 2016 😉
Wearing Amouage Fate. If frequency of use is the bar, then this is my favorite purchase of the year. I also love the Hermes Muguet Porcelaine a good friend brought over from the UK, but it is so cold here today couldn’t make it work. The new bottle of Lyric (only three new this year?) is languishing. For some reason it just doesn’t work on my skin.
Happy Friday all.
You smell great! I need to wear Fate soon, thanks for the reminder!
Me too! Fate is a huge favourite here.
It’s my go-to. It doesn’t offend the sensitives at the office 🙂
Fate didn’t work for me but I am sure it smells fab on you
Have you tried Lyric? Maybe that would work. If I can figure out how to decant without soaking my home I can send you some.
Fate is a lovely one.
Have you tried Lyric in different conditions? Sometimes it’s beautiful, warm, and ylang-heavy on me, and on other days, it’s that buried under a sourish rose. I’ll have to get another sample to find out for sure, but I think maybe it works better for me on warm days.
Hard to choose one favourite so i’m wearing my most recent purchase: Hermès Bel Ami!
Hmm, I think for next Friday’s sandalwood I’m gonna wear Samsara. Or Trayee. Would you consider that as a sandalwood scent?
As far as I’m concerned, Trayee is always appropriate, whetever the theme.
Annikky, you are correct as always.
????
You smell fabulous! I LOVE Bel Ami, must have forgotten to put it on my best of 2016 list.
Good to know. I’ve been meaning to try current Bel Ami. I have a mini of vintage Bel Ami, which I think is amazing. Too masculine for me, of course, but would recommend to a friend if I like it.
My Bel Ami is in the 2nd generation bottle (not the vintage cocktail shaker bottle, nor the current clear bottle). I wonder how the real vintage one smells…
My mini is the cocktail shaker bottle. I think you can still find them from time to time on ebay. Old school. Maybe too old for young men today, but love to smell it.
I get more sandalwood from the drydown of Bombay Bling, which I adore. But it is there in Trayee too I think.
Hey, an excuse to wear Bombay Bling! Thank you.
SJP Stash, with pleasure.
Isn’t it a most pleasant surprise from this year?
Very much so. It was a chance taken that paid off nicely.
I planned to wear Iris Cendre, but I needed something nice and cosy today, so I’m in Angel Muse. As it happens to be my favourite mainstream purchase of the year, I guess it fits the theme pretty well too.
In other news, my Oriza L. Legrand sample set arrived and it’s beautiful. Austefan gets the pin.
Thanks! Even if you do not like them, they have plenty of character and are different enough from most other things, to make the purchase worth while.
Yes, if nothing else, it’s an interesting brand and I’m curious. I haven’t sampled properly for a while and have been craving trying new things.
Which is why I recommend them. They are not at all like the streamlined things you usually wear. Not that there is anything wrong with that kind of perfume, of course.
Please let us know how you get on with them. I am curious after various Oriza’s.
I will!
I love the Oriza aesthetic. I wish they made smaller bottles, though.
Ditto!
Story of my life…
Grrrr… I keep meaning to order a sample of Iris Cendre… I suspect I will love that one.
It’s definitely worth trying.
Is it weird that I find Iris Cendre cozy?
Not at all. I don’t find it cosy at the moment, but I remember finding Iris Nazarena dry and austere at first and now I think it’s soft and warm and easy to wear. So anything can happen.
Oh nice! I’m interested to hear your thoughts on Oriza. They are very unique scents.
I suspect that most of them will not be exactly to my taste, but I wouldn’t mind, I’m just curious.
My best buy this year was the Bulgari blue tea. I didn’t read the description carefully, and so while I knew it was a test I didn’t realize I was going to get a gigantic bottle! It worked out to $10/oz.
Yes, I did the same thing! The bottle is huge, a lifetime supply.
If I went by how often I wore a 2016 purchase, the clear winners are Dame Perfumery Passionfruit, Orange Blossom, & Vetiver; or Dame Verbena, Freesia, & Musk; with an honorable mention for Pacifica Brazilian Mango Grapefruit. But those were all last summer’s favorites, and it is definitely not summery here today.
So instead I’ll go with the 2016 purchase which gives me the most delight: Neela Vermeire Trayee.
You smell fantastic. My 8ml of Trayee is running out, so a bottle is on the top of my list for next year.
In in the same spot. ????
Trayee is my second favorite perfume in this line (Bombay Bling being the first). Once I’m done with the travel bottle, I’ll need to think what to do next.
You can buy the Take Two (per Lucas’ holiday list)
I’ll need to find somebody who likes Ashoka as well and split 2 sets 🙂
Great one!
Loving your purchases…I bought several Dame’s and two Pacificas but they were all gifts for others.
Happy Friday! Am working from home today thanks to the ice and wind yesterday!
1) Am in Stash by SJP- a real late year favorite.
2) Later on, after working, I will change and layer on Black Jade.
3) Coconut coffee, decorated and lit Christmas Tree, homemade biscuits with almond butter and jam and Leslie Odom singing Christmas carols. Perfect day at home.
If I had skates, I’d skate on over to your place! Sounds perfect!
😀
Me too !!!
(and I would bring some chocolate beer 🙂 !!)
Chocolate beer??? NO WAY! Hat’s lik Reese Cups- two great tastes in one!
SJP Stash fans, let’s form a gang or coven or something 🙂
I’m in!
I will be secretary!
I can’t wait to read through everyone’s favorite purchases! It may be possible that I only bought four fbs this year: Plum because I found an irresistibly inexpensive bottle, Marni Rose (ditto, super inexpensive), Bombay Bling as I was able to buy a small bottle, and Beige parfum (technically a gift from husband–but shared assets, you know!)…. that seems nuts. Bought a number of samples and large-r-ish decants as well… The large decant purchases were Mitzah, Cuir Pleine Fleur, Hanbury (finished an FB and then started to miss it), and Ubar. (I also was gifted generous decants of L’Etrog, Sublime Balkiss, and Gris Montaigne.) Of all of these, only the Marni Rose no longer makes my heart go pitter-pat. .. But I’ll keep it a little longer to see if I can be swayed again.
I think my favorite purchase/s were the samples and small decants I bought over the year. Trying new perfume never gets dull.
As for SOTD… in Plum.
Longing for a FB of Ubar.
I also bought Plum because of the price (though I ended up getting just a travel bottle). And I was considering it for today’s project (since it also fits the direct “best buy” meaning) but in the end went with another favorite.
I see that our tastes have a lot in common! I love, own and wear Bombay Bling, Beige, Mitzah and Ubar.
And now I am very curious about Masque Milano Tango!
Try it at your own risk! 😉
I’ve wondered what Mizzah and Bombay Bling were like. Love to hear your thoughts!
I adored Beige! I tried it several times, in the exclusives line and It was beautiful -just too fleeting to justify the expense. What do you think of the parfum?Do you find it lasts reasonably for you?
I own four extrait perfumes–two Guerlains, one by an Italian company, and the Chanel. The Chanel definitely has the lowest sillage, but it lasts 6+ hours on my scent eating skin. It seems very similar to the EDT in scent, but has less sillage and greater tenacity… if that makes any sense.
To my nose, Mitzah is a dry incensy amber laced with honey, cinnamon, and pepper. Bombay Bling is the polar opposite–a buttery mango with cardamom, and wisps of plumeria. I wear them both with pleasure!
Thanks Oakland Fresca- that does make sense.
Bombay Bling sounds delightful!
Morning, all. Yesterday was my very Best Buy, Ambre Narguile. I have so many contenders for second best place that I’m dithering gently. So. Maharanih –yes, beautiful. BEAUTIFUL! Misia, so, so pretty, so girly, but maybe not for a day of housework; Queen–oh, this was a Best Buy in terms of money AND love, but not today…I don’t know. I haven’t bought a huge amount and I love every purchase, and now I can’t choose. I’m going to wear herbal body lotion for a bit and see what happens next.
This morning my hand hesitated for just a moment over my little vial of Ambre Narguile. It is a favorite. I’ll wear it this evening.
I’m wearing ELdO Afternoon of a Faun. I bought it as a present for my partner, but well, let’s say we’re sharing in the enjoyment.
I also bought another small bottle of Kerbside Violet this year, but I’m not enjoying it as much as the first one. Wonder if the formula has changed, or maybe my nose has. It’s lacking that wonderful dirtiness that I remember from the first time I fell in love with it. Second bottle is more.. citrusy, I think.
Have you tried Lush’s Sunny Day? Technically it is an anti-static detangler, but it does nothing for my hair other than smell like violets ripped from the garden…which I quite enjoy.
You smell great, glad to see another fan of the Faun.
I wore my best of 2016 yesterday, which was Amouage Beloved for women. I just wasn’t feeling it for wearing it a second day in a row so I chose the current version of Mitsouko EDP. I have three bottles of the current stuff and I really should wear it more.
Ah. That one’s on my “short” list.
Oh that is a tough one!!! I am wearing one of my top favs today – Taklamakan. However there was a lot of competition as I acquired a few favs over the course of the year (not necessarily all new releases). I feel like I need multiple categories like Oscars :). Other contenders were Loree Rodkin Gothic I for the best vanilla, Poisoned Fig by Rising Phoenix for most unique, Atleier des Ors both Larnes du Desert and Rose Omiyyada, and Sultan Pasha – I don’t even know where to start with him as everything he makes is amazing. So here you have it – too many favs not enough skin space
I like how you put your favorites into categories like the Oscars. That would be a good topic for a SOTD; Grammy nominated scents (i.e. Best supporting fragrance, best romantic fragrance, best comedic (or scent that makes you laugh) fragrance, etc…….
That would be a lot of fun! 🙂
edit: Academy Awards, not Grammys
Ha! You could probably wear your 2016 purchases without repeating everyday for the next few months 🙂 [not judging because I would have to judge myself]
I haven’t bought much this year but my favorite of 2016 is perfectly suited to the day: It’s cold and cloudy with lots of weekend snow on the horizon, plus I prefer to wear what I think of as a ‘fun’ scent on Friday. And Dame Perfumery Scottsdale Chocolate Man satisfies immensely today! I have just a travel size but the number of samples from the most generous Jeffrey Dame included with my order certainly adds to my enjoyment of this ‘Best Buy!’
You smell fantastic! and I will second that Jeffrey is by far the most generous indie perfumer around 🙂
Shalimar Cologne. So uplifting!
I’m sure it is!
I’m in Miller Harris Fleurs de Sel. The herbal saltiness works better in summer, but it’s still quite beautiful on a cold rainy day.
I love that perfume. You smell awesome.
I’m cheating a little bit with my SOTD – L’Artisan Passage D’Enfer – because I’ve actually only purchased a tiny little decant of it. It was a last-minute addition to a larger decant order* and wound up being the one I fell in love with. Lily and incense with a cool, fresh feeling, not the church-y aura of most incense scents. I’ve been very unsubtle with my hints, and I’m pretty sure there’s going to be a bottle of this under the tree for me . . .
* the other last-minute tiny decant that I added to the same order was Bvlgari Black, which is my second favorite of the year (I did buy a fb of that one).
Love that one — an oldie but goodie! Hope you’ll get your Christmas bottle.
I didn’t buy this in 2016, but I’m still counting it as a best buy: Journey Woman. I honestly can’t remember the last scent I bought. I think it was Infusions d’iris, but I could be wrong. Either way, I’m in something I bought at some time and still love it.
Now if only Amazon wouldn’t piss me off so much. It lists my order as being delivered, BUT it’s nowhere to be found. Ugh. It apparently went to the local USPS, but that may mean it’s either through regular post for the final stop OR one of their highly unreliable third party drivers. And now I have to wait 36 hours before I can rip someone’s head off to find out what happened to my package. I realize it’s the holidays and deliveries are heavy, but I’m really not needing this kind of stress right now.
In other good news I got a surprise from my husband. He got me a little Charlie Brown xmas tree with Linus blanket and red ornament for my desk at work.
Awww. Those are the cutest. We had one of those trees last year. It’s the only kind we can have with our mischievous cats and they still managed to mess with and break the one ornament.
I love it as a desk decoration. It’s the right size for my standing desk. It’ll make getting through work next week more bearable 🙂
Ugh! I know the frustration of a package that isn’t where its supposed to be. Unfortunately, it may take a bit longer since it is the holidays. I hope that this is resolved for you asap!
But, what a great hubby you have. Charlie Brown Christmas tree is so sweet!
Thanks. I was really surprised because I got a package that I thought was my gifts for him and then found out he sent me one at the office! He really is sweet like that.
Oh and package crisis averted. Apparently the “delivered” package was set aside waiting for the rest of my order that was supposed to be delivered on Monday and all of it showed up at once. It’s still frustrating and annoying that carriers are allowed to list packages as “delivered” when they clearly aren’t!
Yes, that’s so deceiving to the consumer. Glad everything worked out.
I know what you mean with Amazon and the post office. Both have gotten inconsistent with the shipping and having all these 3rd party sellers doesn’t help. Half the time a package can say delivered but nowhere to be found but it’s actually delivered the next day. But they have gotten real lazy with where they put the package. I had a package of my chai tea concentrate ordered and UPS put it right in front of my garage door, not off to the side and I backed over it because I didn’t see it. Chai tea all over the apron of my driveway. I raised unholy bell about that one.
Ugh, their third party delivery drivers are the worst. I am so sorry to hear about your chai! I’d have been ready to see some heads roll too. Those drivers really are jerks. One day my husband came home to a package in the middle of the front yard. It was clearly obvious that the driver had done a drive by because it was on the other side of the tree away from the driveway. HE THREW OUR PACKAGE OUT HIS WINDOW. I mean, seriously?
YIKES!!!!!
Yeah I keep complaining to Amazon about them using USPS for large packages. I live on a rural route, so USPS policy for the past couple of years is that they won’t deliver to my house, just to my mailbox (1.5 miles away from my house). And if the package won’t fit in the mailbox… I have to go pick it up from the PO. 45 minutes round trip. While UPS and FedEx will happily come to my door. Yeah I’m totally thrilled with Amazon every time I have to waste my time/gas going to get a package that they could have sent via UPS….
Oh goodness I’m so sorry to hear that. That really is ridiculous that they have that kind of policy.
Yeah those “Sorry we missed you!” slips from the PO really make steam come outta my ears. As If They Even Tried To Deliver It.
So far this year I have had four packages mis-delivered thanks to the incompetence of the USPS workers who delivered them to the wrong addresses…Only three were found and re-delivered to me…..just so you know if you contact the local post office they do have GPS trackers for each package which might give you some indication as to where exactly it was delivered…however, if the person it was accidentally delivered to claims they did not receive it (which happened to me) then you might be out of luck…good luck and I hope it comes to you 🙂
I’d been trying to call the local office, but of course the phone has been busy all day. However, I did get my stuff. It came with other items that weren’t expected until Monday. It’s still so annoying that they can list things as “delivered” when it clearly isn’t though.
Four mis-deliveries!!!! UGH. I’d be at my wits end. Sorry you lost the one. I hope you got some sort of reimbursement or refund.
No…unfortunately Abigail of the Posh Peasant told me that she would not refund, resend or file a claim…she redirected me to the post office who said that the vendor needed to file the claim…lesson learned that I need to be careful where I place my orders….Nonetheless I am happy to hear that you received your package 🙂 !!!!
I would have just disputed it with the credit card company and be done with it. To me, it doesn’t matter whose fault it is…I did not get what I paid for.
Happy Friday Everyone!
Wow! Its around 40 degrees today here in Houston and I’m loving it! Can’t remember the last time we had weather like this! So, I will enjoy it while it lasts.
My SOTD is Figue by Molinard. Anyone who knows me can tell you that I appreciate a good fig fragrance. And then, to be able to get it for a discounted price makes the buy even better. Its probably the best fragrance purchase I made this year. Have a great weekend everyone! Stay warm!
Enjoy your burst of cold! I would probably enjoy it if I wasn’t looking forward to a long winter 😉
I bought more than enough this past year so it is difficult to pick a favorite. However, the last bottle I bought was Sarah Jessica Parker’s Stash and I find myself grabbing for it quite often.
Hooray! (secret Stash handshake)
I’m wearing my favorite of the year, Chanel 1932. It’s always appropriate. My second is Baume du Doge, which is getting a lot of wears this fall.
You smell so pretty!
Like Robin, I wanted everything I bought this year so I had a number of choices for today. I went with the one I bought the most–Box of Eels parfum. I bought a second back-up bottle when I was in London and a vintage mini last month. Other choices were African Leather (love it), Dilettante, both Cologne and Absolue pour le Soir, and Desarmant. I’m so lucky to be able to indulge myself.
I was planning on wearing Box of Eels today too. If you read my post, you’ll see why I didn’t. Lovelt scent.
I love how you wrote “the one I bought the most”!!Hehe!!
I was going to wear DeProfundis today but it’s just too cold and I wasn’t feeling it. When I pulled on my shirt this morning I realized that I could still smell Coromandel from the last time I wore it. (Amazing that it made it through the wash.) So I went with it. I bought the bottle this year so it does qualify.
very nice!!
I had a very similar experience with Coromandel recently – and also “had” to wear it again 🙂
I bought a back-up bottle before the switch to EDP!
Ok, now I know from where I’ll buy my next decant will come once my current one is gone 🙂
I am in Serge Lutens Borneo 1834, can’t smell it though due to stuffed nose 🙁 Frankly, I like everything I bought this year. 2015 I just discovered the world of perfumes, and I needed to educate my nose and figure out what I like, so it was mixed, to put it mildly, but this year probably 95% of perfumes I bought i am really in love with. It helped that I worked in a room of my own, so I did not have to worry about anybody but myself 🙂
Hope your nose clears, and glad you liked most of what you bought!
It was a tie between Tauer Sotto la Luna Tuberose and Au Coeur du Désert, but since it’s fall and not spring I decided to wear the ACDD. Happy Friday to everyone!
You smell lovely!
I am supremely happy with all my 2016 purchases, so I went with the one that I woke up craving. For a second day in a row, I’m wearing Dzing! It just smells like a steampunk carnival on me and I adore it.
But don’t worry, other pretties. Your time to shine will come! (Yes, I am having a dialogue with my perfume bottles. No, I’m not particularly worried about it.)
I really like your description – steampunk carnival 🙂
Lol!Dialogue with your babies is quite normal. It helps them age well.
Lol, I think at some point in time most of us have talked our perfume wardrobes 😉
????
I am pretty new to the game and had some extra income this year, so hard to pick a single favorite. I wore L’attesa earlier this week, which may be #1, so today I’m wearing a favorite that was also a favorite purchasing experiencing: Arso, which I bought during a thoroughly enjoyable visit to Fumerie in Portland. Last night was Ambra Aurea, which I also love.
Jealous of your Ambra Aurea! I too, am new to the game, and I DIDN’T have extra income, but of course I didn’t let that stop me. I bought WAY too much. But I wear and love everything I’ve bought…so…that makes it ok? Moral relativism strikes again!
Mmm, love Arso! Need to wear that again soon.
How new is new because you write like a “veteran” 🙂
That is very nice of you to say! I didn’t start wearing perfume until maybe ten or twelve years ago? Then I rotated a handful of things, with the occasional new item thrown in, but it was very haphazard and I wasn’t really teaching my nose anything. Been hitting the juice hard and reading and testing and obsessing for just under two years. The online sites like this one (!) together with decanting sites and samples from lucky scent and twisted Lily and others, plus hunting down perfume where I live and when I travel; it’s a whole new ballgame!
My one sadness is that I missed out on most pre-IFRA stuff. I don’t seek out vintage, though, but like to explore the new or newish.
Semi-participant as I am in my favorite fragranced body product of 2016:Chanel No.5 body lotion.Topped up with 5(!!!!) spritzes of Queen Latifah.Yummy yummy yum yum.I bought the Latifah just when it came out,the bottle has become kinda forgotten! The No.5 lotion:simply devine. And very potent.I love the texture too.I do not like the Pantone choice this year..Happy Weekend All!!xox
And I like the Pantone choice – such a pretty green!
I like it too. There aren’t many greens I don’t like.
If the Pantone color was eggplant,I would wholeheartedly agree!!????
Would you drive an eggplant colored car? I’ve seen several and they are gorgeous but I don’t have the je ne sais quoi to carry it off!
Oh hell yes,I would!!Hehe!!Current je ne sais quoi in a cherry-red Peugeot,by the way!Haha!x
I am with Robin: my favorite fragrance purchase of 2016 is Eau de Neroli Dore!
Hey twin!
I couldn’t decide!!! I am wearing FM Baccarat Rouge that came from a sampler set my husband bought this year because my scarf already smelled of it. My daughter wore CdG Grace Coddington as her favorite of my 2016 purchases!
CdG Grace is such a pretty rose. So tender.
Quite a number of my favs are mentioned above, but I bought them in previous years. I may wear PdE Tabac Tabou today anyway. Or I might go with ERIS Ma Bête, which is a stand-out for 2016.
Please note, nonetheless, that 2016 is not over yet. 😉
This!
Even though I’ve not bought much this year and have cut back on my collection I am actually tempted by a few things now that sales are happening.
I see trouble ahead 😀 . My favorite kind of trouble next to a bath of chocolate!
Friends don’t let friends pass up sales! 😉
I slowed down with my perfume purchases in 2016, mostly those were decants (and all bought – decants and FBs – were the best 🙂 ). But for today’s project I decided to wear Masque Milano Tango. I’m taken by this perfume and hope that by the time my 10 ml decant is empty, they’ll produce Tango in their new, smaller bottle: at this point in my perfume life there is no scent, of which I need 100 ml.
I liked Masque Milano Montecristo a lot. Should get a decant.
So far I’ve tried just two of their perfumes. Love the name Montecristo (it brings up pleasant childhood memories), so I should further my familiarity with the line!
Good morning everyone! I loved reading about your favourites, and I’ve added a few more to my list of things to try. Like many here, I bought rather more than I intended in 2016. I had planned one FB per quarter, but it worked out at double that. Oops!
I’ll start the day in Mandragore, and then move to Trayee. Mandragore is much more fleeting than I realised from my tiny decant, the upside is that it’s easy to move to something else.
It snowed last night and there was a two hour delay to the start of school. I lounged in bed sipping coffee and finishing my book….what a luxury!
SOTD Amor Amor!! A cheap thrill and blind buy that makes me happy. It’s perfect for this cold snowy Friday. I’m so glad it’s the weekend!
I didn’t buy just a whole lot this year, but I went with Queen of Hearts today since I’m reasonably certain I bought it this year and it was a good deal for the $10 I spent on it. 🙂 I am seeing Stash mentioned quite a bit, and I have been trying to decide if I need a travel size of that one. I like it, but it also kind of reminds me of something I made a while back. I think it’s buried in some stuff I haven’t entirely unpacked yet, but I need to dig it out and revisit.
You bought a house this year!
I’d planned on Shangri La for today then realized that I was wearing it throughout 2015 so can’t be claimed as Best Buy of this. Oh my, where had the time gone?
Instead, I’ll go with 31 Rue Cambon which is also a big favorite and actually purchased this year.
Hi, twin! You smell fabulous.
I bought two FB this year, Kenzo UFO (which I wore yesterday) and Hiram Green Voyage (which I haven’t officially got yet, but have a decant I’m working on delightfully on this indoor portion of the day ).*
Later today I’m going to put on a decant I bought, Chene, for warmth I’m going to need outside.
All three are best buys, 100%
*Statistics don’t include 2 bottles I bought and then sold for not working out with me.
31 Rue Cambon! Purchasing a bottle of this beauty before the formula was fiddled with definitely qualifies as a ‘best buy’ in my book. Here’s hoping Chanel re-tinkers with it for the better before I run out…
Have a wonderful day, everyone!
One of my best buys of all time!
I could have worn this one too! You smell great!
I meant to put on TF Shanghai Lily (yay for Sephora VIB sale), but I gabbed Fleur de Chine instead. Which I also bought this year after I found out it was discontinued. I smell good regardless, so happy mistake!
I love Fleur de Chine and am very sad it has been discontinued: at the speed I’m using up any bottle, I cannot justify such an expensive back-up but I’m afraid that once my bottle is gone, it’ll be impossible to find a replacement (sigh).
You smell wonderful!
I bought a backup (first ever!) on Beautyspin. It was really cheap. One note though, they are guilty of changing prices frequently- up and down. ????
Yeah, I noticed. Also they have problems with the math: if to believe their “discounts”, most bottles would have to cost 2-3 times what their actual price elsewhere is: for example, FdC is sold now at $160, saying that it’s a 65% discount from the retail price, which isn’t really the case since the retail price for TF 50 ml bottles is $225? which makes it only 29% savings. Still not bad, but not 65%.
Yes, gotta love their “retail prices.” I bought my FdC for $113 in July. Check the site periodically. The price might go down.
Sampling SL Sarrasins today. It is one of the samples that I picked up during the Posh Peasant’s going out of business sale. All of the samples I have bought this year have added a lot to my knowledge about, and enjoyment of perfume. Sarrasins was just the one I chose to represent them all.
I didn’t know PP was going out of business. I’m not sure if I’ve ever bought anything from them but I visited the site on more than one occasion, so I’m a little sad for them.
Sarrasins has such a beautiful color! I wish the perfume worked better for me but it seems to be more jasmine than I can stand. Still very interesting. And that color… 🙂
You’re right about the color of Sarrasins… gorgeous! And I was very happy to find out that I liked it as much on me as I did sniffing from the sample vial.
2016 was loooongg. Wearing my best buy of the week: Mon Parfum Cheri Par Camille.
You smell fab! It was my favourite purchase in whatever year it came out! One of the last great Goutals.
Sotd: vintage Knowing. This was a leap of faith purchase on the bay of evil. But I was THRILLED to find it is authentic!!! Sillage-yep. Longevity- double yep. Perfection ????
You must smell amazing! The current version is great, so the vintage….
It smells pretty fantastic! If you live in the US, I’d be happy to send you some to try. Email me:
laugsb at sbcglobal dot net
I will email you. Thanks!
I’m afraid I behaved this year and have existed off of past purchases and samples. I only just bought a new scent ( Santal Majuscule) and it isn’t here yet. So, SOTD is Hermes Ambre Merveilles. Amber vanilla Pachouli relaxation. . I’ve gone happily through the bottle and am at the veeerrry end. It’s time to buy a new one!.
The 50 mL bottle of L’Ambre is cute and the juice is cozy.
Yes Hajusuuri it is! ????
Late to the party. Fridays are supposed to be easier, no? What a day. I ended up walking a 5K from my office to the store that packages things in orange boxes and then a walk down to Macys to price out a cream that I could get online for 20% off (and I ended up getting it as I was able to negotiate for a better GWP deal).
SOTD = Sonoma Scent Studio Pacific Forest
I have a travel spray of this one and OH My Word! If you like Forest Walk, this is the primarily natural fragrance with comparable longevity.
I just realized that I can’t figure out what 5K means when it comes to distance in the U.S. It’s 5,000 of what? Does it mean 5 miles? Or 5 km? Or something else? Anyway, from the tone I get that it’s a lot so I admire you and kind of understand the first part (where it comes to orange boxes). But Macy’s? I mean, I understand that it ended up being a good deal, but, in general, why would you even go there to check something out if you do not plan to buy it there?
Km.
I didn’t exactly plan to stop by but since it was on the way home, I decided why not? With Macy’s Reward, my 10% from the Thanks for Sharing Program and the GWP extras, it turned out to be a better deal than the 20% off online. Without the extra GWPs, it would have come out even and so I asked for extras. If I had time, I would have asked her to go to the Jo Malone counter to get me some samples.
I’m so late to post, but I saved my most special purchase of the year for today. I went to The Perfume House in Portland and was able to buy the last bottle they had of the rare and limited edition L’Artisan L’eau du Fleuriste. It was such a great moment in that store with one of my best friends there with me to find out they still had one bottle. I researched years ago and found that they might have one but never had the budget for such things. And it’s 9.9oz so I’ll never run out!
Congratulations!
Wowzers. And how much is 9.9oz in mls?Lol!!Sounds fabulous.
295ml! I practically bathed in it yesterday because it is quite light.
Congratulations!
I completely forgot about the community project today. (Unlike last week, when I remembered the perfume and then forgot to post. I wore the last of my sample of Bottega Veneta Eau Legere, which I would recommend to anyone for whom the original BV did not work. It’s on my FB list, but down in the middle. I think I’ll get another sample, and see if it moves up or down.)
Tonight, however, I will dab on something from what is probably my favorite purchase of the year (or half-purchase–I was telling my mother about it, and she said she’d kick in half, as part of my Christmas present): the M. Micallef Advent calendar. I always loved Advent calendars as a child, the sort that just showed holiday-themed pictures when you opened the doors, under a large and very glittery Christmas scene. I have not been this excited to get ready for bed for many Decembers. Highlights so far have been Mon Parfum Gold and Gaiac.
Also, I have only one Christmas present left to buy. I hope. I realize this is the sort of statement that leads to a friend unexpectedly turning up with “just a little something.”
Yay! Advent Calendar twins! Mon Pardum Gold smells wonderful from the bottle.
It was the perfect house for an Advent calendar for me. Even the few Micallefs I’ve disliked weren’t full-on chemical-soup scrubbers, and so far I haven’t turned out to be anosmic to any of them, either. I plan to give Mon Parfum Gold a full wear next week. (It is a rich, sweet (but not cloying) floriental, for those of you who like that kind of thing. I had a sample of Mon Parfum Cristal, I think from cazaubon, and it was much sweeter.)
I’m a day late (and a dollar short, as my dad would say) but I just love my favorite perfume buy this year so I didn’t want to miss out. En Voyage perfumes Cafe Cacao smells so good! I’ve not been a gourmand fan until late this year and creamy chocolate coffee is just right.
It does sound good. Have you tried the other two in that series, the vanilla and… is it caramel?
Oh my Coffee and chocolate!? I have to smell that. Rabbit! ????
