Wednesday scent of the day 11/30

Posted by Robin on 30 November 2016 276 Comments

beach

Hump Day, and Mark Twain's birthday, and the last day of November. What fragrance are you wearing?

After a rather long search through the sample drawers, I am in Bond no. 9 Fire Island, by Michel Almairac. I smell like the height of East Coast Beach Summer.

Reminder: on 12/2, wear a perfume by Michel Almairac, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Chanel #5, which is quickly becoming my go-to perfume. And it smells lovely and warm when it’s cold outside.

It is dreary and cold here — perfume is a nice antidote.

I like No 5 a lot in cold weather or for snow, and for the holidays. It makes me think of champagne and snowflakes. I wear no 5 regularly too.

Scent twin, very lightly, as I work in an office, in HR, and it’s crazy right now, insurance open enrollment, holidays, and year end business. I have always liked #5, was a signature for awhile, before I fell down the rabbit hole.

My chubby Buddha woke up again with a fever. He didn’t sleep well last night and either did I. Hence my 3rd cup of Nepal Oolong.

I am sampling Gris Montaigne today. Do I dare say it smells mainstream..
    I do like it though.

Sixthed. November is always a lowest ebb month, with the light declining, and this one’s been gruelling. But I’m wearing Paco Rabanne Eau de Metal which is quite cheery. No Almairac or urge to acquire any – I blind bought Voleur de Roses once but sold it on.

Nice picture. I wish it were summer time. I am going thru all my samples once again. Today I am in Bond No. 9 New York Amber. The opening is very sharp and aggressive. It reminds me of an after shaving lotion. Very dry and masculine on me. Half an hour later it becomes softer and spicy roses, some oud and saffron notes start showing. I never get the amber. 6 hours later the sillage is pretty strong. I am happy it is not working for me and therefore it will never make it to my FB list, which is a relief.

Fire Island is great. I’d probably own a small bottle if it wasn’t so over-priced, but as it is I’m happy with my decant.

SOTD = Tauerville Vanilla Flash. It’s unusually warm here (we got up to mid-fifties yesterday) but still feels like the holidays so I wanted something warm and cozy.

SOTD is SJP Stash. The name makes no sense to me. But, I like the perfume and packaging enough to induce me to break my “no buy.” Again.

That being said, it’s not my fault! I was in Ulta, killing time, and there was a lovely holiday set which consisted of 3.4 oz body cream, 1 oz edp, and 2 ml rollerball oil. All for $40. Plus my $10 in points brought it down to $30. I’m sure Donatella would approve of such a thrifty purchase. ????

    Happy hump day all!

Well, I don’t think it’s anything groundbreaking, but I personally don’t have anything like it. It’s quite wearable and unisex, one of those fragrances that just seems to be a low maintenance no brainer for days you can’t be bothered making scent decisions.

On me, it’s a deep, ambery-leathery iris with just a bit of dirt/dust/cedar. I like dark, slightly sweet leathers and ambers (SL Cuir Mauresque, Dior’s Cuir Cannage, Alahiiiiine) and CdI is right up that alley. It starts off a tiny bit rough-edged (like a tamer version of Broken Theories, if you’re familiar with that one), but smooths out quickly and lasts quite well on me – actually has slightly better sillage and lasting power if I don’t spray too much. I’m 6 hours in now and it’s still gorgeous and noticeable but staying fairly close to the skin.

Thanks so much! I must try as I love iris in all its forms and the leathery and dirt/dust/cedar aspects sound very appealing. Let’s hope I don’t get blue cheese!

Today I’m wearing Prada Candy, and drinking a cup of Laduree Josephine tea. It is so yucky outside today. Lots of rain happening now, and lots more to come. My dog is scared to death right now. He hates this type of weather. He’s hiding under my desk as I type.

It’s my last day in Florida on a business trip, and despite the lovely weather, I’m so ready to go home (especially after also being out of town for Thanksgiving). If anyone remembers in the Hard Day’s Night movie where Paul’s grandfather complains that he’s only seen a car and a room, and a train and a room, and a room and a room… that’s me.

Wearing the last of my Poudre de Riz decant, which I’ve pretty much worn every day since Thanksgiving. Seems to me like I’m going to need more of this!

Yep, that’s the one! It really does smell of talc, so if you like powder, I think this is a must-try. Not particularly sweet and with just a touch of rawness (I’m using that word to evoke the uncooked flour scent that seems so integral to powder to my nose) to make it realistic.

Cold here in Denver today. I’m in Sheer Obsession (or Obsession Sheer – I’ve never been sure), but I like the play on words of the first version. Now this is an example of a really good flanker – Obsession is too much for me, but I love this lighter more wearable version that is still true to the fragrance.

Was in L’Occitane the other day and tried the new Arlesienne. Liked it initially, but boy oh boy was the drydown tenacious–apparently I like just a bit of violet, not hours & hours of it. 1st washing of the fleece I was wearing didn’t remove it entirely either! Wish I’d tried the 2014 version.

Chanel Coco is especially nice this time of year. It reminds me of a Christmas dessert my grandmother used to make. It was her special bread pudding, with fruits and spices in it.

Blackbird (Olympic Orchids ) for the tree and CB I Hate Perfumes At the Beach for the long hot summer days lounging under an umbrella by the lapping waves as kids in sun hats and licking ice creams play in the sand. Or Ys-Uszac Lale with its beautiful soft lemon for afternoons at the bach, sitting on the verandah reading an old paperback with red flowering Pohutukawa and bellbirds nearby. Or Terre d’Hermes for the scent of sun warmed rocks and earth as the sun just begins to set around 9pm…..am I rubbing it in a bit much?

I guess it depends on your Christmas associations, but mine would be Atelier Orange Sanguine. To me, oranges=winter=xmas, and Orange Sanguine recalls pomanders (the oranges studded with cloves version) which I strongly associate with Christmas. When I was a child, my friend’s mother used to put orange peels on their wood stove to scent the air during winter, and it reminds me of that, too.

Work today is truly testing my patience as well. It’s a half day because we are all going out for the boss’s bday later, but I’m almost wondering if it would be more sane to stay at the office and get work done than have to babysit everyone at the bar…. oi vey….

SL Jeux de Peau, second day running. I kind of dislike the name of this perfume, and when I think about it, the things that pop up are “bakery, vanilla and gourmand”, which are all not my favourite notes. But I love it when I wear it! It’s so much more than that. It’s got almonds, incense, smoke, and that wonderful toast note that you sometimes get in a good white burgundy. And it lasts a good long while. And it makes you feel like you’re sitting in front of a fireplace, handy in winter.

Love the beach picture! I have been all about tropical/beachy for the last few days. I know, it’s completely out of whack with the season, but it’s been pretty cloudy. I’ve always been all about the Winter Antidote perfumes, although it usually starts a little later in the season. But this year, I’m not waiting around.

Incidentally, saw the latest Disney flick this past weekend. People, if I could buy this movie right now, I would be all over it (not affiliated, btw). Talk about a winter antidote! Gorgeous, gorgeous, sunny, green and tropical! I’m well out of the little kid years – youngest is off at college – but I live near Chicago, and really, a DVD is cheaper than a flight to warmer climes.

No perfume right now; I’ve been using Lucy B for the past few days, but I think I will back off from the sweet today. At least for a little while. Maybe Eau de Merveilles or Azemour…

    Have a great day, everyone!

I am wearing Loulou today…a swapmeet spoil.

I haven’t smelled this in years and it smells a bit different to me so I suspect this is a more recent formula than I may have sniffed back in the 90s. I am not sure if it really discontinued/not in production currently so please weigh in if you know. I see plenty of it for sale quite cheap but I’m not sure if this is old product or if it is still being churned out.

I like it but feel like it missing some oomph I remember from the 90s…such is the reality of reformulation.

In other news, Xmas is 3 weeks from Sunday!

I have a newish bottle from maybe 2 years ago? I can’t imagine it having more oomph than it has! By oomph I mean it’s potent and fairly loud. I can only wear it dabbed and applied an hour before I leave the house.

I don’t think it is still in production and I do believe it was reformulated somewhere along the way…the original was divine! Back in my college days someone in one of my classes (American Lit) wore this one all the time …it was her signature scent…took me weeks before I struck up the courage to ask what she was wearing…..

I too don’t get the allure of Alahine. I’ve tried a number of times, since people have said it takes repeated wearings to “get,” but I’m still not there and have set it aside for the time being. Like you, I don’t find anything objectionable about it; just nothing exciting.

Here’s a delightful review of Gucci Rush by the Candy Perfume Boy. And who doesn’t just want to smell like a hooker sometimes? ;)

    https://thecandyperfumeboy.com/2011/08/27/sometimes-i-just-want-to-smell-like-a-hooker-gucci-rush-perfume-review/

Rush is definitely Exhibit No. 1 for Candy Perfume Boy’s assertion that that perfumes released under Tom Ford’s art direction at Gucci and some other brands are more exceptional, or at least have greater finesse, than those released under his own name.

I’m wearing Knize Ten today as I sneak it into the last day of my year’s experiment, but I have other leathers I like better so into the re-home pile it will go.

My experiment year ends today. I was neglecting things I loved, buying blind from note lists, and pursuing scents getting lots of notice on various blogs. My goal is to have about a hundred perfumes that I adore and keep the collection fresh by periodically culling those that have fallen out of favor to make room for new loves. In this first cut, out of 145 perfumes I didn’t wear 30 for a year or more. My rejects will find new homes as I’m putting together a sales list for Basenotes and I’m putting aside some travel sizes and decants for the Freebiemeet in January. I’ve learned that buying a sample is, for me, much wiser than buying blind. I only love about 5% of what I sample, so money saved!

SOTD has been Parfumerie Generale “Bois Blond”.

    Top: grass, galbanum and wheat;
    Mid: cedar and hay;
Base: ambergris, musk and white tobacco.

For the 30 minutes it lasted, it smelt like (I imagine) wood in the Star Trek holodeck: it might make you think of wood if you were a very very long way from any actual wood. And after 30 minutes someone orders the simulation switched off, and we’re back to where we started.
