Monday scent of the day 11/21

Posted by Robin on 21 November 2016 233 Comments

joy

By now you've probably noticed that it's Monday again? It's also World Hello Day. Do tell us what fragrance you're wearing.

I needed a little burst of beauty this morning — I'm in vintage Jean Patou Joy.

Reminder: on 11/25 we're doing Black Friday cheap thrills, edition 3 —  as we head into the holiday spending season, wear something that costs $50 or below, double bonus points if it costs $25 or below. No points for wearing something expensive that you bought cheaply via a sample or decant or somesuch! We're trying to find real bargains here.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Happy Monday everyone! I would like to give thanks for all your birthday wishes last Friday. I really appreciated them. I had a very nice time on Saturday sharing with family.
SOTD is Juliette has a Gun Lady Vengeance. Very nice rose and patchouli fragrance. Sharp and green. It reminds me in some way of NR for Her, but much lighter. Pretty and easy to wear.
Question: Are there any scents, besides the Demeter, with a pumpkin note? I am very curious about it.

starting cheap thrills early with Inland Fog Egyptian Musk (I paid five dollars for a bottle of this oil last fall) which smells exactly like SSS discontinued Egyptian Musk….and another day with my accidental vetiver lotion which, surprisingly, is REALLY starting to grow on me….

Now it’s gearing up for the holidays in the bakery. Lots of orders and people buying every available bread and roll under the sun. My skin has been so dry the past few days, I broke down and busted out the Amouage bath products that I have. Currently, I am freshly showered and wearing the Lyric body butter. When I go in to work, I will spritz on Lyric.

I just saw on Ulta that there is a dry oil of Stash and a holiday set that’s a bottle of the dry oil with a bottle of the edt? Or is it an edp? Anyway, price wise the set is $5 more than the oil by itself. I’m just thinking about it for now…

I am actually happy it is Monday. Last week was absolute insanity, and the weekend involved performing in 4 very wet holiday events as part of the local concert band, including a parade where it rained so hard the Euphonium player was literally turning his instrument upside down to dump out the water. My poor greyhound marched with a friend with our local adoption group, and he still isn’t talking to me – he was soaked!!

SOTD for a lovely dry Monday – Knightsbridge by Robert Piguet. Suede, leather, vanilla and Sandalwood.

What a good sport your greyhound is to march in the parade. He helped other animals get adopted I’m sure. I’m glad he and you are warm and dry and enjoying this Monday.

I’m surprised that the band marched because the rain ruins their instruments, or so I’ve been told.

We all weatherproofed as much as possible and took preventative measures afterwards, but yes, the rain can severely damage the instruments. The greyhounds were easier to dry, but slower to forget :)

Jacques Fath Pour L’homme. Hard to describe, but aromatic and close to the skin and very masculine.

A couple of days ago I got one of those ultrasonic diffusers (this one, if you want to know what it looks like — the black one: http://www.sparoom.com/products/aromamist) for my desktop to help fight winter dryness and make the air smell a little nicer: I put just a tablespoonful of rosewater in with the water and it is so nice. (It also has those changing LEDs which I love, because I am helpless before anything that lights up or changes colour or glows in the dark.)

I have a large glass decanter filled with essential oils (ginger, cinnamon and clove at the momenu) with several wooden sticks…a poor man’s version of a reed diffuser but it does the trick…so many people walk into my office for a touch of ‘aromatherapy” throughout the day :)…I am seriously considering bringing in my essential oil collection for all to enjoy….we could use some more aromatherapy, especially around the holidays!

A little nip with lunch sounds like just the ticket! My former shrink’s partner is Naom’s assistant so I got a few stories about him. He still has office hours where he will meet with anyone who requests an appointment. You or me or the cleaning lady. Really anyone who wants to talk with him.

I’m off to see a client so no scent till later. She lost her adult son to heroin last summer and has been coming in for 90 minute treatments. Right after it happened she came in. I have never seen a human being in that kind of a condition before. It was like she had left her body. In any case, she wears a scent that is very similar to vintage Bandit so I’m going to offer her my vintage parfum today.

I discovered Mona di Orio, and love her Vanille and Eau Absolue. If you like incense, April Aromatics Calling All Angels, if you can live with the crystals ;-), it is very beautiful, enveloping warmth.

my most current loves (aside from Dame Perfumery which y’all are sick and tired of hearing me carry on about!) have been the Berdoues Grand Cru collection…I spent the summer in Assam of India and am currently enjoying Oud al Sahraa (of which I get no oud…it is soft and balsam-y with a slight fruitiness to it)…but I have sampled all from the collection (with the exception of the most current one whose name escapes me but the notes and Russian inspiration intrigue me) and I like/love them all….but the biggest thrill for me are those bottles!!!!

I second Heeley. I haven’t tried Eau Sacrée, but I have tried and enjoyed Cuir Pleine Fleur, Iris de Nuit and Sel Marin.
I also think that you would enjoy at least some of the Mugler Les Exceptions, I believe that most of them were done by Olivier Polge.

A line that I got a bunch of samples of that I working my way through and enjoying very much is Oriza Legrand. I don’t know whether you would enjoy them, but they are different enough to merit a try.

When I get perfume ennui (and what a lovely word that is), I tend to go back to my old favourites. It usually doesn’t last for very long, although I definitely do not sample as much as I used to.

I really like the Suleko line. I bought Djelem but also really liked the dark smokiness of Baba Yaga. The other 2 in the line were nice, but didn’t thrill me.

I felt exactly the same a couple of weeks ago! I don’t know how I can possibly be bored with my collection–it’s big and richly varied, but I just was., and this in spite of having bought my Hermessencesand Frederic Malles just the week before! I’m ashamed to admit that I pootled down downtown purely to buy something, and talk about being seduced by a pretty bottle! Oh my! I left the store the somewhat bemused owner of Michael Kor’s Midnigt Shimmer! It’s like wearing a sauce made of melted brown sugar and butter and golden syrup and vanilla, with just a hint of something boozy underneath. My Chanels are all shunning the vulgar newcomer and quivering their delicate nostrils when they see him, but I love him!

Thanks to a generous NSTer I discovered PG Iris Oriental- lovely iris wrapped in warm spices and heavy on cardamom. Very different from the irises I’ve tried before- almost instant love. Once my sample is finished I’ll get a decant.

A few dabs of Vol de Nuit extrait. A difficult one to love, but all the more alluring! Narcotic narcissus, galbanum green, bergamot, an oriental powder, and castoreum and smoky resins and woody mossy touch… Feeling grand all of a sudden!

If you can find one of the cube (testers) of the extrait, look for a deep amber color. That will be, if not old “vintage”, at least the pre-reform perfume. The current formulation (at least the bottle I received from BG, and sent back) was a very pale straw color with a slight greenish tinge.

You can always tell other bottles of vintage by the packaging.

Used up the last of my SSS Winter Woods sample this morning and I smell amazing…even better than I remembered. I guess it’s time to buy a travel spray (since I promised my husband–who passionately loathes WW–that I wouldn’t buy a bottle). It’s funny how two people can have such dramatically different perceptions of a scent.

Oh I adore Winter Woods…on my skin it imparts a sweet, smoky vanilla (I know there is no vanilla in it per se but Laurie told me years ago that my skin must be amplifying the amber)….I drained a full bottle and two decants over the years so I guess that speaks volumes for how much I like it….you smell amazing!!!

Winter Woods is SO smoky on me that when I wore my sample to work (the back room of an auto parts store), a customer walked into the back to pick up his stuff and commented, “Wow, I didn’t know y’all had a woodstove back here.”

My idea of a cheap thrill is finding discounted Amouage on BeautyEncounter or FragranceNet. ;) Nonetheless, I’m wearing Perles de Lalique now, which I probably learned about in this poll last year. It’s still ridiculously inexpensive and not bad. However, it wasn’t the poll that reminded me of it but rather coming across Victoria’s review yesterday:

    http://boisdejasmin.com/2006/08/perles_lalique_.html

Jessica also reviewed it on NST:

    Happy Monday!
Started the day with an osmanthus craving so chose Daim Blond. For some reason it’s soapy as heck on me today so I have layered a few big sprays of Evening Edged in Gold over it and a big smear of the Dame osmanthus soliflore for good measure. I smell very peachy right now.
Have just made the first of many last-minute holiday grocery runs. It’s already nuts in the baking aisle (we ran out of black pepper!). If my sister-in-law assigns me one more last minute dish I’m gonna rebel. We suddenly need refried beans which aren’t a quick thing to make unless I cheat and use canned beans, which I just can’t bring myself to do.

But my family still insists on home-baked pumpkin pies. (I totally cheat with Libby’s canned pumpkin puree and frozen pie dough sheets from Trader Joe’s.)

I would love to be a part of a family that relaxed. Actually, I grew up with flexible family but married into staunch traditionalists who can not tolerate a holiday that doesn’t look like it was planned and catered by Martha Stewart’s crew. I’ve already annoyed my SIL by informing her that I’m bringing a (really delicious and festive) salad as my green veggie instead of something overcooked and drowned in cheese. We will all be smashed in her tiny condo kitchen and I’m not going to be battling for cooking space.
Luckily, we go to Mom’s for a second Thanksgiving on Saturday where I can be in charge and we can have food that tastes great and isn’t over-garnished or served on huge, cold platters ;)

Good morning, all! We’re driving down to the Central Coast tomorrow to spend an extended Thanksgiving holiday with my family — looking forward to mushroom hunting and salty beach walks and my dad’s glorious cooking. I’m off work today, and barely functional after my son had a very restless night, and I started off today sampling entirely the wrong perfume: Tom Ford Noir, which for some reason made me gag. It might smell better if I was better rested, but on this bleary morning it smelled like a cupcake soaked in fougere and turned up to eleven. Scrubbed it off and put on Orange Vert, and even that seems like too much. I guess my nose needs a rest today.

My nose is working very well lately. Over the weekend I pulled a random sample, and got Puredistance Opardu. Carnation, tuberose and general loveliness. Even tho they really are nothing alike, it reminded me of Mohur extrait. I got whiffs of carnation for hours, and fell deeply in love. Smells great, no allergic reactions, adorable hubby noticed it favorably. So this morning I looked on Luckyscent, thinking I should just get me some, and discovered the way in which it resembles Mohur – the price! Yikes! Sigh. I will order a few samples and wear those and see if that suffices.

I am allergic to almost everything really, and I keep my reactions at bay with constant doses of antihistamines, constant cleaning, air filters, those things you put on your mattresses to reduce exposure to the saliva of the tiny little varmints that live in mattresses, etc.

My theory is that Mohur is so expensive because it contains a really pure set of ingredients, and I love it because there is nothing in there I react to. My impression is that Opardu is the same.

I rotate my perfumes constantly because if I wear the same thing often I start to react to it. That’s what happened to Jour d’Hermes, I really liked it and I wore it a lot, and one hot summer day, it just became too irritating for words. I am afraid to even sniff it now.

So yes, I am bummed that they want even more for Opardu that I paid for Mohur Extrait. But, if i go through a few samples, and it continues to seem just about perfect, I might get a bottle of that, and give everything else away, except for maybe Bois d’iris, another thing that seems totally pure and non-irritating to me…

Puredistance is an expensive habit. Opardu was one of my first flowery floral loves. A splitter on Basenotes got a bottle on a super discount a while back (I think it was 50% off). My parents didn’t raise no fool – I bought the entire bottle.

Happy Monday, all! I went on a walk to take a break from thesis misery and accidentally had a little sniffventure. So my SOTMs are: YR Accord Chic (thanks, hamamelis, for encouraging me to retry it! I like it better this time around), which is my cheapie; FM PoaL body butter on one hand and oil on the other (the body butter is winning by leaps and bounds, and is actually prettier than the perfume); AG Tenue de Soirée; Une Nuit à Bali Mr. Vetiver; Armani Privé Bois d’Encens and Myrrh Impériale; and the scent I went out with, SSS Winter woods. So there you have it. I smell magnificent.

The boyfriend comes in a week, so this week, I’ll be wearing scents he can’t stand (mostly heavy orientals or anything “weird”). I hope to finish most if not all of the first draft of my POS thesis before he gets here. Wish me luck!

Thanks! It’s lovely. It’s a warm, oriental, gourmand iris. The iris doesn’t have any of that celery root/seed note to it, nor does it have that cardboard like in Iris Cendré. It’s just a marvelous creamy note. It’s pretty firmly in the category of: I would wear it all the time if someone gave it to me, but it’s not exciting enough for me to buy for myself. I would swap for it.

I recently came across.a TV dinner line called Grainful . The meal is savory and uses steel-cut oatmeal for carbs. I’ve only Had the mushroom and it was rustic and filling.

SotD = one spritz of Stella EdP from a new sample. It will go to a friend later today before I use it all.

I encountered 24 Faubourg EdP in the wild over the weekend. Yummy. I’m itching to find a tester of the EdT to see how it compares.

Thanks to Robin’s SotD I sniffed my sample of Joy EdP this morning. Joy certainly lives up to its name. Wowza.

First day commenting since my surgery. Trying to control my pain today and press on. Since I’m not allowed to shower yet, I did a “wash up”. What an ordeal. Who would of thought cleaning yourself would be such a painful ordeal. Knee replacement surgery is no joke. So, since I did a wash up and trying to feel somewhat like my old self, I sprayed on a few spritzes of Jo Malone’s Wild Fig & Cassis. The temperature has dropped substantially within the last few days, so this scent goes with the nice weather.

Good luck! I am battling a gnat of a senior manager who spent a lot of energy thinking up 10 different ways to say no instead of using the time to come up with solutions. I am meeting with his manager and a peer of his tomorrow because be needs to be put in his place. It may need to be a Chanel No. 19 day on Tuesday!

    SOTD = MFK Grand Soir

This is a big fail as a cheap thrill but boy do I smell fabulous. Weather vagaries were such that we went to a warmish Fall to Winter in < 24 hours and Grand Soir is perfect! I'll be hauling out the ambers and tbe vanillas!

And a pox on whomever mentioned the RealReal website last week – I'm sitting on my hands and no, a $25 sign up credit does not tempt me, not at all. Nope.

I have browsed that site as well and some of the handbags looked very tempting, until I decided to check customers’ reviews. OOOPS! I guess I’ll have to wait until I win a lottery (which is never, since I don’t buy lottery tickets :) to buy Salvatore Ferragamo handbag.
P.S. $25 sign up credit went to a spam folder :)

I bought 4 bags from them (they do extra 40% off around every couple of months). I am a huge fan of Tod’s bags and got both of them under $100 – in great condition – almost new. Chloe was a disappointment – but I think the leather that is used for Chloe bags is very soft and damages easily – so even if the description says it is in great shape – it will not be. I also got a Dres Van Nolten bag which I love (and those who saw me during our parfumista outing a couple of weeks ago can confirm is impossible to find anything in). I think you can get a great deal on Chloe, Tod’s, Ferragamo and Fendi. Bottega was crazily expensive, nothing that I would even consider spending without a return policy.

Yesterday’s meeting was about what I expected, and I feel curiously flat. Left to my own feelings, I wouldn’t wear perfume. Or make up. And could I please go to work in my pyjamas? However, I seem to hear my mother’s voice saying mother-like things: “Come on, up you get. You’ll feel better when you face the day.” And, “Best foot forward. We will not wear our hearts on our sleeves..” Hmmmph. Why not? It’s as good a place for a heart as anywhere else. But whatever….now I’ll put on a fakely neutral expression and Jubilation 25, and plod off.

I think I’m feeling the pre-holiday down in the dumps today. I don’t feel like doing much at all but there is so much to be done. Cheering myself up with Amouage Homage this morning and thinking of adding a little Amber Flush, just to experiment. “Hurrah, it’s Monday!”, said nobody, ever.

SOTD has been Brocard “Queen of Spades Modern” (says the sample label, but I think it’s just the modern incarnation of “Queen of Spades” (“Pikovaya Dama”, if my Cyrillic skills are anything). Oh man, is this ever SWEEEEEEEEET! My teeth have fallen out.

    Top: citruses and mango;
    Mid: orange blossom, rose and jasmine;
Base: patchouli, musk, vanilla and candy apple (or marshmallow, depending on whose list you read).

Now I bet someone in NST has a guilty secret: they would love this. ‘Fess up, sister! (or brother!). The only way to get over your shame is to share it.

Finally, I am listening to Spanish radio and heard this, which I dedicate to Waterdragon and everyone else who needs to caffeinate in the morning (sorry Robin, you’re not allowed, doctor’s orders):

Wicked dreadful migraine all night and this morning. Double dosage of rizatriptan finally kicked in. But I still feel achy and flu-ish from the meds. Rummaged for a comfort scent and came up with Bois d’Ascese. I smell like I’ve put on a woolen sweater worn next to a camp fire, and a glass at my elbow is wafting the scent of Talisker dregs (that is the perfume talking, not a post migraine curative!).

I did it once and I breezed through the airport and the plane was empty (to SF via Houston)…and I unexpectedly saw a cousin once removed (his grandmother was my great-grandmother’s sister) and we also work (and still do) at the same company!
