Monday scent of the day 11/14

Posted by Robin on 14 November 2016 251 Comments

Pippi

Happy Monday! It's World Diabetes Day, and Astrid Lindgren's birthday. If you missed the Beaver Supermoon last night, be sure to look for it tonight. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Comme des Garçons + Pharrell Williams Girl.

Reminder: 11/18 will be No Brainer Friday — wear one of your seasonal "no brainer / go to" fragrances. Thanks to SheriG for the suggestion!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Today I was craving for one of my favorite orange blossom scents: L’Artisan Seville a L’Aube. I sprayed with abandon and I am really enjoying it. Sweet and green. Sadly, I have never been able to get the incense note that I am sure I would love. Hopefully, one day I will…

I don’t get incense either, but I also think my noise is very untrained. I just get very rich, very juicy orange.

    Dzongkha for a peaceful Monday.
    Cherry Blossom Green tea
Wide leg pants and a t-shirt. Keeping it simple.

Babies are happy and playing a lot together, gives me more time to finish my tea and read the WSJ. My toddler is pushing her teddy around in her baby stroller and my chubby Buddha is just crawling around trying to keep up. I think the whole scene is hilarious.

Wearing Cuir d’Ange (and loving it), but wish I could get some L’Artisan l’Eau d’Ambre for further testing. I only randomly tried it in a store last week (wasn’t ever thinking it would be for me), and now I am obsessed.

Thanks, hajusuuri — great idea and very nice of you! I am not at home for a couple of more weeks so have not really a way to get samples right now. But am enjoying my Cuir d’Ange that I got from your split :), and will be looking into what you suggested.

Regarding l’Eau d’Ambre, I wonder if the Extreme is a version of it or a completely different fragrance. Can somebody help?

Probably not helpful of me… but I was sniffing around eBay just a couple of days ago for some decants and noticed several l’Eau d’Ambre, second hand, bottles for sale. I think I saw the Extreme as well. I haven’t tried either, so am useless there.

            Oakland Fresca,
Thanks for enabling :) Yes, the prices are not bad, and I am tempted to go ahead and get a FB. The question is whether I need to try the Extreme first …

I have a sample of the Extreme and really like it. It is said the be a more intense, edp version of the original. It is also a Jean Claude Ellena fragrance, so if you like his stuff I would say it is worth a try.

I have the Extreme but have never smelt the non-extreme so can’t compare. The Extreme is a real hospital grade amber…all the goodness of a regular amber but double the dose. It is beautiful and spunky, great sillage and lasting power. Not particularly subtle…so if you like a sleepy amber the Hermes Ambre Merveilles is safer. But if you like your amber with the punch of Chanel Coco then the Extreme is the one. Softens beautifully and as it wears it becomes spicier…like a cinnamon amber. I love it.

Kanuka, I love your descriptor: “a real hospital grade amber”!

What you said makes me think that most probably I’ll end up with the “sleepy” version, but will definitely try the Extreme, and, if you don’t mind, would like to borrow your expression for future uses.

My first no brainer of the week is Yves Rocher’s Neroli. Uncomplicated and simple but just smells great. I have it in the shower gel (a bit disappointing) and the body lotion (fantastic and heavily scented) which I use as a shave balm. Can’t go wrong really.

Have you tried any of the holiday scented body products? I read a comment over the weekend that the Pear & Cocoa is yucky. The other 2 are Clementine & Spices and Cranberry & Almond.

Further use of the Clementine & Spices hand cream has confirmed that the scent is lovely and the product is terrible. My hands feel dry 10 minutes after use. If anyone gets around to using the shower gel, I’d love to know how good/bad it is!

Yes, I think you have to catch it near the horizon to have any sense of scale, and that would only be meaningful if you’ve often seen the moon rise or set.

To me, the moonlight did seem extraordinarily bright last night, but that was due to the clear skies and low humidity, as well.

CSP Vanille Peach, like Vanille Abricot only peachy instead of apricotty. They’re actually pretty similar, to be honest, but the Peach is brighter, with a lot less of that cooked-sugar note that makes Abricot so wonderful.

I think Sephora in Canada has always stocked CSP. It’s a real shame the line has become so attenuated, but as long as they keep making Amour de Cacao and Vanille Abricot, all is well.

I woke up this morning to the dry down of Cuir de Russie today but since my shower, I am in a bind. Still haven’t called Amex and it’s my fault for burying my head in the sand for so long but that’s tonight’s phone call. I’m wanting a vanilla dominant scent. It’s either Havana Vanille or SDV today. I’m wishing that I could afford a full bottle of SDV and that I wasn’t on a no buy thing.

The scent itself is nice enough but no lasting power, as so often with Pierre Guillaume stuff :^(

Pippi was my role model, hee hee. I think the book is floating around here somewhere.
Naming an ELDO perfume after her is a great idea!

Wearing Tabac Aurea, which is a fall no brainer. The SSS shop is up and 3 ml is practically free, especially if you bring coffee from home for a few days!

I do remember Dallas and watched the first 4 or 5 seasons of the original series a few years ago when the new next generation version was on tv.

Krystle Carrington was on Dynasty, though (with Joan Collins.) Dallas is the one about the Ewings (“Who killed JR” et al) with Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy, Victoria Principal, etc.

Never smelled any of the tv show inspired fragrances, though!

Sampled the new Chanel no. 5 l’eau this weekend. It was clean, fresh, and a little citrusy, could be a nice warm weather scent. However, it did nothing to sway me from craving a bottle of no. 5 eau premiere!

I’m freaking out a bit about the Indian Rupee, hopefully all will be well by the time I go on my trip.
This morning I used some Porto Rosa soap and put on some Parfum Sacre from an STC decant which I’m in love with again. It’s such a soft, feminine spicy rose scent. It smells beautiful today and is really calming me down. A friend gave me an old laptop to take to India in exchange for a painting commission. So my project today is to finish up a small painting of a ganesh dancing in the middle of a circle of flowers.

Yes it’s absolutely gorgeous in this weather. I have three different versions of it and was being super finicky, but now I think it was because I was trying them in the warmer weather and the fullness of their fragrance was not coming through for me.

Oh yes, but presumably that won’t affect Sajini, right? Because the money she will be getting from a bank will all be the new stuff? (Though, yes, that does seem like a dazzlingly short-sighted move for a country with 1.25E9 people in it, so many of whom are so, so, so poor.)

It shouldn’t unless she kept some from her previous trip, in which case she may not be back in time to deposit it and would have to convert it in the U.S. at an unfavorable exchange rate.

I gather the move is to catch out people who’ve amassed loads of “under the counter” cash and not declared it for tax purposes. I’m guessing the very poorest aren’t in that catgeory (but I shouldn’t pretend to know).

Well, the poorest are the least likely to have bank accounts, and the ones least likely to hear about this (I’m thinking of people out in villages), so they’re the ones who are most likely to be most screwed. I can already see the movie they will make about this, and in my thesis- and American politics-induced unbalanced state, it’s already making me cry. (Tax purposes! The Indian politicians are far more corrupt than their constituency!)

This…what is called “black money”. The whole thing seemed to not have been well planned with panic stricken people queing up for hours to get smaller denominations which are not impacted by the changeover.

    • Sajini says:
      14 November 2016 at 5:03 pm

wow lots of responses about the rupee. Yes, the 500 and 1000 rupee notes have been made obsolete overnight. People have a couple more weeks to cash them into banks but they cannot be used for purchasing except for hospital, petrol and utilities but only till the end of Dec I believe. The problem is that there are not enough lower denomination bills available for people and the new bills have not been printed/distributed to banks yet. The ATMs have been shut down as they run out of cash and before replenishing and the new bills are a different size so won’t fit into existing machines. There is a 2000 rupee (about $28) limit on how much people can take out, if they can get any. So people who have small cash only businesses are not getting any business because nobody wants to part with their lower denomination bills. The line ups at the banks and ATMs are really large. All over India, trucks are being abandoned by the roadside because there is no cash flow to even provide food for the drivers. My friend who lives there is just putting her food on a tab at a restaurant until this whole thing gets sorted out.
People overseas who have cash rupees will not be able to exchange them unless they know someone who can take them to India. I have heard that the banks here in the West are not exchanging because they do not have an accurate exchange rate.

A very generous NSTer sent me a huge decanted sample of Zadig et Voltaire. I am wearing it today–feels perfect for this damp, grey day. I have my younger son’s first (no doubt of several) triennial IEP meeting today (for those of you in the know, share my pain. For those not–consider yourself spared!) But I have to squeeze in beforehand a conference call on this huge report I am working on… need strength!

So, this “This is Her” from Zadig & Voltaire… I almost love it, but catch something chemically in there that keeps things platonic. It reminds me of several of Laurie’s offerings at Sonoma Scent Studio. Maybe the buttery sandalwood and musk she uses for the drydown in some of her fragrances? Anyone else smell the connection? If you like the Zadig etc. and haven’t tried any of the Sonoma Scent Studio, I would recommend them!

I have been wearing For Her fairly frequently as it is a spray and walk away style scent…so easy to wear but it does have a weird , not plastic but maybe polystrene, chemical note. That note is absent in For Him and the two versions work quite well worn together. But For Her is a definite no brainer but definitely not bland perfume. And not too sweet or fruity which is a bonus. Good luck with your work this week.

My phone was ringing when I walked in the door. It was my husband calling to tell me that Gwen Ifill has passed away. You all might remember I am a compulsive NewsHour viewer. And for weeks I have been worried about Gwen not being on the air. Last week I wrote an email to PBS expressing my concern and how much I missed her on election night.

It is such a strange thing to deeply mourn a person I only know through television.

Nothing about fragrance, I know. But I remember there were quite a few others on this forum who were her fans as well.

Another thing I have trouble with is the distance she places between herself and reality. Her narrators are so, so isolated. So desperately alone. But ok, I’ll give the Little Friend a try :)

It’ll be the toughest week of this autumn/winter at work, so I’m in 31 Rue Cambon. It also happens to be a complete no-brainer for me.

Like many Estonians, I’m a huge Lindgren fan – most Estonian children read her books from a very early age and her long-time illustrator Ilon Wikland was Estonian, adding to the connection. I believe I’ve read most of her works (I actually prefer some of the lesser-known stuff) and now read them to my daughter.

Very good morning, one and all. It’s unseasonably cold and windy here, and I’ve resorted to jeans and a jumper again. Admittedly the jumper is only cotton, but still, it’s a jumper. It means I’m not in shirt sleeves yet, which really, I ought to be by now. I expect mid-November to manage something a bit more convincingly summer-ish! The world feels all anyhow at the moment, so I’m bringing it back to order with a judicious application of En Passant. I have a day of admin and meetings in my office, so I’ll be cheek-by-jowl with people all day. Who could hate lilac? I think it’s a good choice or a busy day.

Grand Soir today to celebrate a Monday that is NOT a workday. Instead, spent the morning getting fingerprinted and have a routine MD appointment this afternoon.
No super moon for me last night- I was super tired and hit the sack almost as soon as I got home from work.

I have just sprayed Ambre Extreme on one arm as Schaf mentioned it, and Floriental on the other so a pretty feisty mix for someone sitting in bed with a plate of toast and honey. Grim day here. The news was full of the 7.5 earthquake with images of destroyed houses scattered throughout North Canterbury. My mother’s house was badly damaged in the Christchurch earthquake and I feel for all the people facing months and years of uncertaintly, insurance troubles and rebuilds…just awful. I suspect that our city food supplies will dwindle over the next few days as the main highway linking the North to the South Island is a wreck…so getting freight down to us will be difficult. A number if amll communities further north are completely cut off by damaged roads and massive landslides. Heartbreaking for the people left homeless. The worst news , in a way, is that some people had their houses robbed and looted when they were evacuated (during the tsunami warning, or post-earthquake). So, that’s the news down here.

One interesting thing is that a helicopter pilot flying into the earthquake area reported the strong smell of earth , reaching him hundreds of metres up in the air, the result of all the landslides.

I’ve experienced that up home, a couple of kilometres away from a landslide near our beach. The earth smell is complex, and not entirely gorgeous. Earth (as opposed to sit) seems to retain the scent of things that have gone into it: animalic and oily and alive because full of death, I suppose. Sometimes it smells a little like vomit, even. I love the smell of dirt, especially rain on drain on dry ground, but the scent of the earth is quite different.

I’ve emailed, but so far no response. I’ll try calling at a reasonable hour there, but I’m quite worried. I’m hoping people pull together through this. Sending good vibes your way ✌????

Good to hear from you Gaynor. I wasn’t too worried not to hear from you yesterday as I thought “well, if *I* were near a strong earthquake, I’m not sure my FIRST thought would be a perfume blog” ;^)

I have only once experienced an earthquake, a little 3.x or 4.x in Birmingham. I had been opening up a chimney breast and stopped overnight without inserting the new lintel, so I thought the rattling and roaring was the chimney collapsing. Given the logarithmic scale I can’t imagine a 7.5 quake.

I don’t know if I’d say the moon was a “supermoon” last night, but it sure was annoying as **** in the middle of the night when the light from it beamed down like a damn football field spotlight into my bedroom. I don’t have black out curtains, but I’ve never really needed them – until last night. Suffice to say, I did not get much sleep last night.

It’s been a busy day here for me, which is fine. This way I’m not reminded that if I stand/sit still for two seconds I might fall over asleep.

I have to say I didn’t notice the moon last night, but did notice DH getting up at the crack of dawn to slam the window shut. Apparently the neighbor was whistling for his dog. Which I was happily sleeping thru, til DH tantrum. Thanks hon. So I’ll join you in need-a-nap :)

My morning got derailed by witnessing through my window an older intoxicated guy fall backwards into the street. My burly next door neighboor helped get him into the sidewalk as I called 911 and a woman who spoke his language waited for the ambulance to arrive which took about 3 minutes. Good team work and nice to have people coming together to help. Faith restored.

Hi all, I don’t know how much some of you have seen about the earthquake here, but it’s been a tough 36 hours here in New Zealand, and reading your comments this morning has been been a lovely feeling of normality. My home is fine, including my perfume collection :) , but there has been quite a bit of damage to some office buildings here in Wellington and I’m having an unexpected couple of days at home.

There’s awful damage to some small places in the South Island and transport will be disrupted for months. I feel so sorry for the people affected.

I sprayed lavish amounts of Rose de Petra yesterday, events like this remind me that I should enjoy things while I can.

My kids love it too and I am sure I will be reading it to my grandkids when the time comes :)

I’m wearing Eau d’Italie (the original, I believe) as I found it (along with its sister) yesterday at a sale. It is incensey/green/woody abstract, and could easily fit in a go-to category, particularly in the spring I might think. Reminds me of timbuktu and dzongkha, which I have tried but do not own. Don’t know if I need 100mls of it, but I’ll be delighted to split/swap decants with pals here…

It was not an online sale, I wandered into an outlet sale of a local store that I think was discontinuing the line. I got the original and Siene L’Hiver, the only 2 that were left.
If you want to swap for a decant of it, email me through my user name, both are 100mls, so I have plenty for trades :-)

Ugh, is it Monday already? Why?

Clarissa, Cazaubon, Yukiej, and I had fun sniffing in SF yesterday. We had a yummy lunch at Tartine, tried (mostly unsuccessfully) to fob our unloved samples off on each other, wandered thru Tigerlily, headed over to Union Square, sniffed things and annoyed the SA’s at NM and Barney’s. Clarissa took a bath in SL Bapteme du Feu in an effort to help improve the atmosphere on BART on the way home. Just doing her part to make the world a better place.

Everyone was quite restrained in the purchasing department except for yours truly. I bought myself a bottle of Mirus December Kiss at Tigerlily… and found out that the guy who’d just left the store was Mr Mirus Himself, so we just missed meeting him.

Wish all y’all had been there! (Oh my, imagine all of us in one place at the same time….)

Glad to hear the Kiwis among us are ok.

So late again today. I wore Alaia this morning because I had an appointment and it’s a perfect scent for these things. A total no brainer but yet still pretty.
Afterwards, I sprayed on a healthy dose of Chergui. I tested Chergui over the summer and didn’t care for it. However, this scent in cooler weather is a totally different experience. What a beauty! My only gripe is that I wish it had better longevity. I’ve worn it for two days in a row which is very unusual for me. Yum!
