Tuesday scent of the day 11/8

Posted by Robin on 8 November 2016 218 Comments

Kelvin Chen American Flag Teapot

Election Day, at last! I am going to take my son with me to the polls, as I do every time I vote, but now for the first time, he's going to vote too. Then we are off on a college visit, so posting will be light today.

Quick reminder: heed the comment policy, please! We can talk about voting and we can talk about how glad we'll be to see this election over, but please, no partisan politics.

And I went light on the perfume, too, so as not to annoy my fellow citizens. I'm in a little dab of Parfums DelRae Mythique.

Reminder: 11/11 will be Iris Friday — wear an iris fragrance, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Kelvin Chen Mini Teapot (porcelain with hand painted enamel; decorative use only!) is $34.95 at Museumize.

That’s a darned sweet teapot. Voted by mail last month, and will continue to do so, as long as it’s an option. Romanza today, am on a mini kick with this one.

It’s all over the news in my country as well. I’m wearing Dior Homme and had Laos Wild Phongsali as my first tea of the day.

I like it, it’s quite woody, but not chocolatey like Chinese tea can be. It’s not a very high end tea, but for what it is, it’s nice.

I’ve done that! Not the Sacrebleu part but the trying and scrubbing. Sometimes you just don’t know what you want, or you accidentally put on the wrong thing and can’t deal with it. Repeatedly.

Oh yes, Sacrebleu is always lovely. But particularly so when it’s winter! It always puts me in mind of the compulsory Nutcracker ballet viewing during the Christmas-New Year break.

One of my favorite Nutcracker performances was at the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It was initially a limited 5-year run and now they are back again!

Wearing a wee smoosh of L’Occitane Amande and Lavande hand creams, which together smell a bit like anise, or more accurately like a stripped-down version of Lolita Lempicka. I got a little tin of three tiny tubes yesterday, and I may have to get bigger tubes before we leave Toronto (no L’Occitane where we live). They go really well together.

Egoiste- named for all politicians, everywhere.

Jam o’ the day: Election Day by Arcadia with guest vocals by Grace Jones.
One ’80s NYC summer I was visiting uber-fabulous friends on Le Caliente Isle when we were invited to a late night party.
Turns out the host was Miss Jones, whose outfit was white palazzo pants and diamond earrings. She couldn’t have been nicer and a good time was had by all. LOL

    Vote U.S.A. !
    Carpe Diem y’all! :D

I’m back from Japan where I had coffee in Osaka with a perfume friend (originally from Poland) whom I met via Instagram. The modern world is quite wonderful sometimes. I’m wearing Guet-Apens from a decant she made me and I’m loving it. I think she occasionally lurks here as well, so Ania, if you’re reading this – thank you!

Amber Flush arrived last night and I’m pleased to say it’s everything I hoped. Definitely sweet, but hits all the elements in amber that I like, and none of the ones that make me queasy. The cat wasn’t a fan….but more for me, I guess. ;)

Wishing all my fellow Americans who are voting today logistically manageable trips to the polls!

Let me know if you have any interest in trying some! I haven’t tried it next to Amber Flash, but relying solely on my scent-recall skills, they seemed to have things in common. And there are definitely commonalities in the basea of Amber Flush and Rose Delight

I’m finding that many of my loves are a bit too “perfumey” to wear around my preschoolers, so I’m trying to expand my selection of more subtle scents that are still interesting and actually last more than an hour.

Happy voting with your son Robin! I got to do the same thing with my son two years ago, our polling place is actually located inside the high school so he texted me on his lunch break and we voted together???? The selfie together afterwards was a no go (heaven forbid, one of his friends might see!). It was a bittersweet proud moment nonetheless.

My SOTD is Iris Poudre. I love it, but my husband despises it so I only wear it on days when I know I won’t see him until very late.

I just got back from NYC where I ran the marathon. It was amazing, and the greatest thrill was realizing how many people were generous enough to give up their Sunday (or entire week!) to make sure that 50,000+ runners would have a safe and comfortable experience. My hugest thanks to all the race volunteers, and to all volunteers of any kind.

He says it reminds him of funerals. I think it’s the aldehydes that he’s reacting to, but I don’t want to make him sad so I haven’t worn it around him after his initial disgust to test if that’s indeed the case.

Early voted last week! Definitely the way to roll for the bigger elections. Unfortunately, I hear that one of the two top candidates is gonna to win tonight! LOL Bummer, because the two of ’em are both quite flawed, whatever your personal politics or preference might be! :)

ANYHOO….on to a fun subject! My daughter had a doctor’s apt in Atlanta yesterday, so we always take the opportunity to have lunch at the good mall nearby…and sniff perfumes! Such a good time in Sephora and Nordstrom, particularly at the Jo Malone counter. Pretty positive that Santa will be gifting some JM English Pear and Freesia to my girlie on Christmas morning…..

In other smelly news, I’m ordering my Sephora VIB 20% off goodies in the next day or two, and decided to try the Atelier rollerball set! I’m a big fan of the few samples I have, so thinking the rollerballs will be a real treat!

I was planning on LAP Traversee du Bosphore for the iris note, but my Tauer package came last night so I couldn’t resist sampling Au Coeur du Desert. I haven’t done a direct comparison with LADDM but it seems both softer and richer, somehow. Very pretty. Looking forward to trying my new Amber Flush tomorrow.

And my oldest son voted this year for the first time as well! Absentee ballot, though, as he is away at college.

Am in Chanel 19 Poudre (from a sample). I got the idea from one of youse guys. Great for a foggy morning.

This election I am now calling Thunderdome. #twoenteroneleaves

If I think of Poudre as a No. 19 flanker, it just ticks me off because it has none of the empowering, Amazon-warrior qualities of the original.

If, however, I think of it as a greener version of Infusion d’Iris, I like it a lot and find it calm and pleasant.

In agreement with Mals86. It’s a greener, deeper version of Infusion d’Iris. There is a comforting powdery freshness to it, and on me it is persistent, yet subtle. I like it a lot, and I suspect you will too.

I mailed mine a couple of weeks ago. I have a very fuzzy memory of voting in-person in college (?) but it’s been well over 20 years since I had to go to a polling place. It would be great for democracy if all states ran mail-only elections but it would make election nights dull ;)

        Hey there!

Yes- so my first election in college was in Wisconsin, so I had to queue up for that. But ever since living here in Oregon and California I have just mailed my ballot in (CA you have to ask for mail in ballot but it’s easy.)

I think vote by mail is the way to go for MANY people, if not most (people work after all on most Tuesdays!). I am glad to see that this option is being used by more people.

I always think of people who can’t physically stand in line or get around easily. My 98 year-old grandmother, for instance, can barely leave the house much less deal with the whole polling place process. I’ve lived in places where you can request an absentee ballot but it’s so much easier when it’s automatic.

I dithered about what to wear on this stressful election day — something cozy and soothing? Something stately and rise-above-it-all? Wound up choosing Falling in Love for its sunny, sweet, childhood memories vibe — a sort of perspective adjuster. But I may switch to Cuir de Russie later, because as it turns out, that’s what I’m in the mood for.

Hello and a. very good day to all. I’m prancing out of the house today wearing an odd assembly of clothes: a black-and-white checked skirt cut with a shirt tail hem, long, soft, flowing, a little black jumper, crisp, short, good proportions, and white sand shoes. I thought I looked casual and a bit funky: the dear man says I look as though I’ve wrapped myself up in a table cloth from our favourite bistro. Sadly, now I’ve looked at myself through his eyes, I think he’s probably right. But too bad: I’ll stick on a red lippy and spike my hair and see if I can carry off the table linen look! The perfume helping me to this worthy goal is Carnal Flower. I decided that if I resembled a runaway diner, I needed a perfume I couldn’t overlook, so it was this or Femme. I have Exam Board in a couple of weeks, and I’m saving F for that, so I’m wafting the green headiness of CF and beginning to see why this perfume has garnered so much attention and devotion.

    Be well and happy, all.

Actually, why not both? You look funky AND like you fashioned part of the outfit with a tablecloth. Given what I wore in high school 18 years ago that is not a BAD thing at all! :-D

And a good red lipstick + hair gel always pulls everything together!

Actually, just as I was leaving the house, the dear one approached me with Dakkie in his arms and said that since I was clearly supporting the bistro with my clothes, why didn’t we go there for dinner tonight and support it in the normal way? A date night! No cooking! Excellent unintended outcome!

SOTD: ELdO Like This. I suppose I should have gone with an American scent, but, you know, Like This seems appropriate in a few ways all the same. ;)

Misty, drizzly, chilly-for-Oklahoma. All the same, there were people at my polling place! Which is good, because our voter turnout tends to be terrible, and there are a number of very important SQs on the ballot this year. My polling place had all kinds of signs of community democracy going on, so it was a very pleasant fifteen minutes or so. Now I can relax a bit.

My sephora sale order is due to arrive soon, including a bottle of ELdO Bijou Romantique (those 1 oz bottles are so reasonably priced!) and lots of other goodies (though nothing all that fun – I usually just stock up on stuff I always need and use.)

You smell great! Interesting. When I sniff the bottle, I can definitely smell the bourbon vanilla with everything else. On my skin, it gives the impression of a soft patchouli incense–so I’m guessing that’s the oud and fig mixing with the patch–and I can’t detect the vanilla at all. My skin tends to amplify basenotes like crazy, so it’s a typical result.

Did DS and Durga also do a Nasty Woman? I think I saw it on Facebook. Or maybe a dream I had.

No, you didn’t dream it! I just looked, and there was a post on their FB page–although it seems like it was just a humorous photo and not a real frag. If I’m wrong, someone let me know so I can buy it…

It’s good. I applied a good swipe (with the wand cap I bought with it) the other night before I went to bed, and I could still smell it the next morning.

I’ve been out and about today and have a class this evening, so nothing yet. Depending on my mood later tonight, I may break out Dior J’Adore l’Absolu. This flanker is close to original 1999 J’Adore, the scent of pure happiness, to my nose. It’s either that or one of my remedial natural scents, such as La Via del Profumo Lake Blossom. Good luck, everyone!

Sorry, this was supposed to be a standalone below. I think I forgot to hit post, and then when I started to reply here, it came up with the comment box.

What I was going to say here is that there is something in Nasty Woman that makes me cough, but it was cheap and I like the suffragette label very much. The scent reminds me of Chanel Coco, which is certainly one of the more subversive Chanels.

Oh dear. Sorry it makes you cough! I wonder what it is?

I love the suffragette label! It definitely doesn’t smell at all like it on my skin, but I love Coco, so I’ll have to sniff the juice again in the bottle…

If there is anything citrusy, it may be whatever is in Profumum Roma Acqua Viva that also makes me cough on first spritz.

We went to vote at 7 this morning and as usual had a great time making fun of the Hibernian Hall with it’s stinky beer grotto and life size statue of Saint Patrick clutching a miniature church while shaking his finger at two adorable snakeys at his feet. The ballot people were really efficient this year and the line moved fast. I was too groggy to put on perfume, but my husband’s Cuir Ottoman was more than enough for the both of us.

With all due respect to those of you who like that teapot, I find it simply hideous! Proud though I may be (at least most of the time) to stand beside the American flag, I don’t find it (or most other flags) particularly pretty.

Robin, what a great milestone! And have a great time on your upcoming college visits :)

Hello to you all from Barthelona! The hotel is not nearly as dreadful as its billing process might have led me to believe (still not resolved, btw; I’ve decided to leave a scathing review). Since arriving a couple hours ago, I’ve already gone shopping for some ham and cheese aaaaaand maybe a bracelet. I haven’t seen any snifferies yet, but I’m on a no-buy anyway, so it wouldn’t matter if I did.

I ran a bit because no restaurants open for dinner until 20:30, so I no longer smell of the Epic I put on before leaving. I’ve brought three plastic samples with me, and I think my post-shower scent will be Eau de Sisley 3, which is almost a dupe for Poivre Samarcande.

I also voted by mail a few weeks ago! Keeping my fingers crossed awaiting the outcome of this horrific 16-month election season.

Hope you have a wonderful stay and hope you have some time to see the city. We had grilled ham & cheese sandwiches a few nights ago with jamon serrano and aged white cheddar, but both were from Trader Joe’s and surely pale in comparison to what you’ll be enjoying there ;)

I can’t believe your billing issue hasn’t been resolved. Incidents like that must make returning home some kind of solace – we’re quite spoiled with responsive customer service here.

Enjoy Barthelona! :-). I remember ordering a tortilla and getting a potato omelette, not what I was expecting. LOL.

I rather like our Canadian maple leaf flag. Being a citizen of France, Canada and the USA I have several choices but the maple leaf is my favorite.

I don’t love it or hate it, but the idea of a teapot that’s just for display is entirely foreign to me!

Have a GREAT time in Barcelona, that was one of my favorite vacation cities ever.

My sister-in-law has chicken motif teapots for display only on the space between the cabinets and the ceiling which then spilled over to the fireplace mantles.

I did not even know chicken motif teapots were a big enough thing to collect, but I should have known! My grandmother collected cow creamers — that is, cream pitchers in the shape of cows.

Some reminants of Cuir de Lancome from yesterday, totally forgot today. But in the voting spirit as we have our quarterly vote end of the month. The topics are not always great and sometimes annoying, but I do feel lucky I can vote on such a wide range and will be able to do so from abroad too. That being said, I’d love to vote with the booth or the more traditional ways, it just seems more momentous! Anyway hope everyone has a nice day!

    SOTD is Angela Ciampagna “Liquo”.

    Top: lavender, violet and lemon;
    Mid: anise, licorice, hay and coumarin;
Base: incense, vetiver and tonka bean.

The hay kind of reminds me of MCG’s “Elephant & Roses”, which however is a lighter and brighter scent than this. This one was intersting to try but I won’t be taking it any further. :^)

Robin, I appreciate your keeping this a politics free zone, although I’m not sure at the end of the day such places exist! At this point anything beyond complaining about the length of the lines and the number of commercials feels contentious to me.

More importantly I realized that what New Sibet most ️smells like is ash and iris, but funky ash rather than the dry ash of Iris Cendre.

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

What’s an iris week with Chanel No. 19 EDP? Not an Iris Week! It’s perfect for Election Day as it will fortify me for whatever the outcome. I am uncharacteristically on my way home already and all this really means is that I will need to log back in to work at some point tonight, besides being on a scheduled call with an Asia- Pacific colleague.

In other news, I believe Macys (at least Herald Square) is now carrying Hermes.!!I have $40 in Machs money to spend. Of course there’s 20% for VIB starting the 10th. Decisions decisions!

This should teach me not to hurry up with the comments! I wanted to hit send as the train reached my stop. For the Macy’s money, I’m thinking Eau des Merveilles but want to see if I can get it cheaper with the Sephora 20% off. I want the smaller bottle even though it is pre expensive per mL because the larger bottle is too big for my hand! You’ve got some good choices there!

Comparing Nirvana Rose with Stella this afternoon. Openings are both bright green roses. On me, NR seems linear. I prefer Stella’s dry down. On a different note, I got to drive to the polling station and stand in line TWICE because I forgot that I had taken my license out of my wallet. ???? Yippee!

That’s just the sort of thing I’d do! In fact, before leaving the house today, I specifically double-checked on the whereabouts of my license for that very reason. ????

Ditto that: NR seems fairly linear, and I prefer Stella’s drydown.

Voting by mail that doesn’t require a qualifying reason such as for absentee ballots – I’ll never go back to a polling place again.

Posting really late today, because I had a massage this morning and then I had to stop by Ikea for a curtain rod and some finials…but I came out with a new perfume cabinet. I had been looking at something tall, like a Hemnes, but there was a Sallskap floor sample 1/3 off. It will just fit the space I have in the bedroom. I don’t have to assemble it and it will be delivered tonight! SOTD is Kyoto. Sniffing this brings me serenity no matter what happens tonight.
