Thursday scent of the day 10/27

Posted by Robin on 27 October 2016 283 Comments

Benjamin Moore Pumpkin Spice

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

Day four of Halloween treats brings me around to Red Hots: Serge Lutens Rousse (hat tip to Monkeytoe).

Reminder: 10/28 will be Treat Friday — wear a fragrance that reminds you of candy. Suggested by Happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the paint blob is Benjamin Moore Pumpkin Spice.

I’m wearing the pretty candied rose and violet of L’Artisans Drole de Rose today.

Suitably moody in Une Rose Chyprée. Tea is another non-descript Kusmi Earl Grey, Troika. I’d rather drink something else, but at work,so no access to other tea.

I intended to pay a short visit (too busy) and am happy to let you know we’re twins today. Hope the mood lifts, Une Rose Chyprée is such a beauty, not moody to me, just excellent company.

Actually I just meant that it has this slightly nostalgic feel about it that goes with autumn. And yes I am moody, but not particularly so today ;)

        It’s a beauty, and I love it.

Hmmmmmmm girls, you 2 are tempting me to try this one!! You must smell great!
My SOTD is Atelier des Ors Larmes du Desert from our splitmeet in September. It is really perfect for this cool cloudy autumnal day in DC. I find it softer and more subtle than Tauer’s LdDM which is perfect for my mood. Plus the bottle is beautiful (reminiscent of VdN!)

While the Violet wasn’t quite my thing it did have the merit of being original and interesting. I haven’t yet tried St.Petersburg but it’s in my set of 5 Kusmi mini’s. I liked Prince Vladimir.

My favorite Tauer — everytime I wear Une Rose Chypree I’m surprised anew by just how good it is! And we’re Kusmi cousins today; I started my day with their Violet.

After reading Kevin’s review, I stopped by Diptyque boutique at Grand Central on my way to dinner last night. I tried the 34 collection and none of them made my credit card close to coming out of my wallet. They are nice, but not for me.

Today I am in L’Eau Scandaleuse and this will go on a FB one day dream list. I got a sample of this from a generous NSTer -and I am very grateful

Montale Intense Cafe. It’s the inside of the wrapper of a dark chocolate bar with just a dusting of the candy remaining.

I stopped in at Ari’s yesterday and left attached to a small bottle of Felanilla. I had been eyeing Vanilla Hinoki, but it went flat on my skin.
…So nice to have her discerning nose to help me better articulate what I was sniffing.

In my last drops of Christian Dior Dune. I am so happy that another bottle is gone and even though I love it, I will not replace it. There are new scents that I would like to try and also so many that are in my FB buy list. TGIT and waiting anxiously for the working week to finish.

I am continuing my intrepid investigation of 5 samples that read like they should be ‘sweet treats’. My mission – to fearlessly expose impostors, to bravely try new things, and to unashamedly split infinitives while doing so.

Sample #4 and SOTD is Huitième Art “Sucre d’Ébène”.
Notes: woodsy notes, sugar, benzoin and hazelnut.
It doesn’t smell of ebony, or any other wood, or of hazelnuts for that matter. More a sightly artificial fruit syrup that’s been watered down a bit.

Treat factor: 2.5/5, it’s okay but a bit too reticent for my taste. I need my perfume to remind me I’m wearing it.
If this were a sweet it would be: Japanese grape candy.

Good morning, NST! Woke up in dire need of coffee, so no surprise I ended up in Bond No 9 New Haarlem! Still my favorite Bond, although Chinatown is also wonderful.

Did I ever tell y’all I lucked into two interviews at Bond headquarters while living in New York a few years ago? Not much to report, except that their Bond Street office is very cute- oversized Bond bottles everywhere!

Good morning. I’m trying to stay chipper despite the rather drizzly, dark weather that made it impossible to get out of bed on time this morning. It’s only 9:45 and I’ve already had one cup of coffee and now on to tea.
I’m trying out Venezia today from a sample ihadanidea sent me. It’s very sweet and fruity with a touch of vanilla and woods. It’s sorta candied so I guess this works for this week’s theme.

On the bright side, it transfers very easily and lasts forever on fabric so as long as you smear it about a bit it might be possible to enjoy it for several days each time. ;)
I got some on the sleeve of my robe one evening and managed to actually transfer some back to my arm two days later. I have also performed this miracle with the spot my arm hits on the kitchen tablecloth.

I hate to admit it, but no. Koenigsburg used the term “too reticent” to describe something else, and I think that is how I’m feeling about it. Maybe because I’m dabbing rather than spraying? How much should I have applied?

You know, it’s funny… everybody who loves Alahine seems to have taken about four tries with it before falling for it.

Not that I insist you do that. Just sharing the stats on it. :) My personal experience was a lot of “I don’t like that, but I want to smell it again,” until I skipped right through the “don’t like it” part and went straight to “want to smell it again.”

I’m a little surprised it’s not blooming, though. I find it kinda big (and I normally don’t like that).

Hermes Cuir d’Ange is so edible that I avoid wearing it, even though I love it, because it constantly prompts me to go look for a delicious pastry or candy. That’s not what I’m wearing, though, because eating more is the last thing, especially around the holiday season.

Trying to work my way through the April Aromatics sample set, instead. This is one of the rare times when I lament that they are all so beautiful because how can I choose?

Gah, I got to finally smell that on a silver fox of a gentlemen. His wife had bought it for herself but he basically hijacked it. I got permission to have a hug and a deep sniff. I told his wife that if he was not married he would be in trouble, and she said that when he puts on the perfume, HE WAS looking for trouble.

      Amazing.

Grey skies but not too dark, the rain is not supposed to start until 5pm. However it is only 3C, rather nippy. I am cozied up with the dogs in an incensey cloud of Le Labo Vetiver 46. Those Le Labos rarely smell like their names and I avoided this one for a long time thinking it was a vetiver scent when really it’s incense.

Another one to try. I am just dipping my toes into Vetiver, so usually anything that has the V-word scares me away. Until pixel introduced me to Malle’s Vetiver I had none-none-none in my little collection. FM’s Vetiver is great, but I do not think it is standard vetiver, so the V-word still scares me. Incense and smoke on the other end ….

Compliment is when you compliment someone on how nice they look, and a complimentary sample is related to that sense. Remember “I” like to give compliments.

Complement is to complete the whole, in a sense, to fill in around something else, or more metaphorically, to go well together. Think of the E in complete.

Gypsy Water for me today. Looking forward to the weekend. Sometimes Thursday is my favorite evening because it’s all still ahead of me (kind of silly, I know). But today I still feel like I will have great fun and accomplish great things and by Saturday night, I’m already behind.

I thought Rousse would be perfect for me, but there’s something in the drydown that doesn’t agree with me at all. I’m dying to try the new Bapteme du Feu to see what that one is like.

Also, just want to add that swapmeet has been a blast!

Thanks for the link. I heard a story on NPR a couple of weeks ago about people who’d become totally anosmic (due to illnesses, accidents, etc.) and it was incredibly distressing. One of the people featured had turned things around in exactly the same way you did and now runs classes for people who find themselves in the same situation.

And now I absolutely must try Songes!

You’re right, that SoCal scent is particularly elusive, finding it in a bottle may be impossible, but we seem to live for the search, yes? Sometimes when I am in my mum’s backyard I will take her garden shears and snip citrus leaves and blossoms, lavender, rosemary, honeysuckle, jasmine, plumeria, whatever is blooming, and then pile it all in a bowl that I leave on the table by my bed. Sweet dreams!

    Happy Thursday!

    1) Rainy and humid; ants are making their presence felt. Time to get out the BORIC ACID.

What do you use Boric Acid for? Ants?

        27 October 2016 at 2:08 pm

Yes, you would use the boric acid on ants and on floor surfaces. The boric acid gets into the thorax breathing holes, and causes abrasion. In addition, it’s cause metabolic shut down when the ants eat it. What you want to hope for is that the ants survive for long enough to take back food to the nests and spread the poison around.

Right now, the wet, mild, humid conditions are causing an explosion of ant births and thus household invasions of ants.

Wearing Guerliain’s fairly new Neroli Outrenoir today…

In the opening it reminds me of something I’ve worn before as Elizabeth mentioned yesterday but not sure what…

Alas it speaks to me more of spring/summer than fall. It is nicely done but I don’t think I will need more when my sample is finished…

I’ e smelled it on a tester strip and it is really good; however, it is only a available in bulb atomizer format which pretty much killed my interest. Maybe I’lll ask if Remik is willing to host a split!

Bulb atomizers are the reason why I commented on your post yesterday regarding Goirmand Coquin. If you like it, buy it as soon as possible in case it switches over to the bulb atomizer.

I actually get mostly tea and citrus. I think I was excited by the name…outrenoir meaning beyond black, etc. and was expecting something else/more. A bit like Coco Noir for those who were let down…of course there was the predecessor of the original Coco there to set the bar quite high. So many noirs and now ultra/outrenoirs too in the perfume world… ;)

The opening for me was a dead ringer for Séville à l’Aube, lots of orange blossom, then the myrrh takes over. It was okay but I don’t feel like I need it. As hajusuuri says, the bulb sprayer makes it a no-go anyway. Would only buy a decant at most.

I’m in Ambre Russe today and glad I chose it — it’s a chilly, rainy day here that’s gotten off to a rocky start due to some accidental pre-caffeine snark between me and my almost-equally sleep-deprived husband, and then coming to work and finding out that some folks here are less than supportive of the balance I’ve worked out between being a mama and working full time. It’s been such a struggle, and hearing that people are looking askance at my work made me break down crying in front of my boss. Who, thankfully, is wonderful and completely supportive, so there’s that, at least! So Ambre Russe is workin hard for me this morning with its beautiful, spice-cookies-in-the-desert embrace.

Yesterday I had the chance to try Eris Perfumes’ Ma Bete (I can’t do the little carat thingy over the e, but you know what I mean). I have a high tolerance for animalics but I met my match with it. To me it smelled of dirty parrot cage, sour milk, and unwashed feet. I went back and read Angela’s review and saw that Barbara Herman is an admirer of Secretions Magnifiques. Ma Bete has that same acrid, fecal feel. It wasn’t an immediate scrubber, but I did try to keep my wrist away from my nose.

Today I’m wearing Rose Flash because Andy Tauer included a rollerball of it with my last order. I’m very particular about rose but this is nice, and I think it might be nicer if I sprayed a little No. 5 over it.

It’s so funny that we all have different skank boundaries, isn’t it? SM smells like a sex crime to me (that bloody knife!) and there are quite a few things that seem quite literally postcoital to my nose (Patou Joy!), besides some musks that I just CANNOT manage (Smell Bent Commando = nasty locker room). I can’t do Dzing!, either (sawdust, stale candy peanuts, tiger pee). Aromatics Elixir is distinctly urinous, IMO. I just don’t know what’s going to hit the “Beyond here there be dragons” line until I try.

Ma Bete, interestingly, did not seem particularly offensive to me. It smells a bit like fur, but that was kind of it in terms of animalics. No, um, crotch or anything. Belle de Jour, I thought, was closer to Secretions Magnifiques, but it might be the salty thing coming into play. I didn’t like that one at all.

I’d love to do a study on what perfumes smell offensive to various people and prepare a kind of map, or a Venn diagram, or something, just so I could understand the subject better.

Am wafting in the soft clouds of pillowy lemon fluff of Profumum Meringa. Will be wearing L’Air du Desert M. this evening to see the musical Man of La Mancha.

Wanted to share a tip: when trying unsuccessfully to scrub some perfume off yesterday with Tide, it occurred to me that the cleansing oil I use on my face might be more a more effective way to expel it. It worked! I rubbed the oil in, let it sit for a few minutes, rinsed it off, then followed with soap & water.

      Oooh, enjoy the musical!

First, I want to know what perfume you were trying to scrub off!

The oil-based maku-up remover is a great idea but I don’t use one be ause my face ends up feeling like an oil slick. Someone here commented about using Tecnu which is what one would use to remove poison ivy oil. I bought one through Amazon and I found that it gets off most of the perfume on one go and I’m sure, had I been more diligent, 2 more washings without much scrubbing would remove all traces. I belatedly discovered that Costco sells Tecnu behind the pharmacy counter.

Half-bath painting project nearing completion!!! Second coat and touch-ups all done, toilet paper holder replaced with a new oil-rubbed bronze finish one instead of the builder-grade cheapie chrome original. New towel rods up tomorrow. At the moment, I have put one outlet cover back up unpainted (white), one light switch cover painted the same deep blue as the walls, and one spray-painted to mimic the oil-rubbed bronze. When The CEO gets home, I’ll get him to weigh in on his preference.

    Whew.

High five mals! Was this DIY? A couple of weeks ago, I unexpectedly had to have the shower re-tiled: no leaks or mold, thank goodness, just a failure of the old adhesive/grout/whatever held the tiles up. This house is midcentury modern, so new shower fixtures are polished chrome. Change can be good!

    SOTD = Indult Tihota

Delicious vanilla and musk. Tihota is one of my favorite vanillas; it is so potent, voluptuous and sweet!

Last night, to my horror, I discovered that my decant of Vanille 44 leaked in its baggie. I don’t recall how much I had left in the decant because my wearings have all come from my Barneys bottle. Anyway, I was able to salvage 11.5 mLs (have I ever mentioned I’m geeky?). Needless to say, I just ordered a decant from a basenotes splitter to replace my backup decant and to make some available for splits. A 10 mL decant is already spoken for. I will make an additional 15 mLs available for split – just send me an email.

Was the 11.5ml you saved loose in the bag? In any event, congrats on salvaging some!

Most was still in the bottle. The 1.5 was loose in the bag. It was like watching a river of gold swirl down a vortex.

I hate it when that happens. Had an irreplaceable decant leak out 10mls (out of 30) in a move. Of course all the cheap stuff survived intact.

So late today! I hope everyone has had a good day so far.

SOTD is EL Knowing. Sooo good. And I scored a sample of N°5 L’Eau today, so I’m looking forward to testing it out tomorrow.

Oh, wait, I actually forgot what day it was! I do have a sweet treat lined up for tomorrow. So maybe I’ll have to spritz a bit of the Chanel later tonight. ????

Package from Black Phoenix arrived today. One sample, “O”, has been irritating me all day. I shouldn’t lead with such a negative remark, but want to save my thoughts on Nasty Woman for tomorrow. ????
