Tuesday scent of the day 10/18

Posted by Robin on 18 October 2016 217 Comments

Thierry Mugler Gout brand image

Happy National Chocolate Cupcake Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm celebrating with Thierry Mugler Angel Le Goût du Parfum. Admittedly I smell more like the treat than the trick. Maybe the trick is that I don't hardly smell like an angel?

Reminder: 10/21 will be Trick Friday — wear a fragrance that smells entirely different from its name (or feel free to interpret "trick" in some other way). Suggested by Happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Yes, it is positively tropical here in Montreal. Last year on this date it was snowing.

So far I’ve tried Greylocke and Hepcat, waiting on two more samples to arrive (Moab, and Olmstead & Vaux).
Not sure I’ve worn enough of them to form an opinion on the line as a whole, but I do like the packaging, at least from the pictures I see online.
Greylocke isn’t making much of an impression, it is like many other vetiver-centric fragrances I’ve tried. Hepcat so far is the standout of just the two, but not sure that I’m going to splurge on a full bottle.

The boyfriend has left France, and I (rather melodramatically, I’ll admit) keep singing to myself, Reviens, reviens, ma bien aimée! Comme une fleur loin du soleil, la fleur de ma vie est fermée loin de ta sourire vermeil.* I spent a while in lab tearing up and trying to find the perfect version of this, which appears not to exist, but here’s Kiri te Kanawa coming pretty close: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IN0rQlMQfjI

At least Passage d’Enfer is keeping me company, chosen because there’s nothing dark or hellish about it. (It was just the name of the street l’Artisan Parfumeur used to be on.)

Maybe I should find a chocolate cupcake to cheer myself up.

*Come back, come back, my love! Like a flower far from the sun, the flower of my life has closed, far from your vermillion smile. Yup, overwrought French poetry can be so fitting.

Your line of French poetry reminded me of this e. e. cummings poem:

      So sorry you’re sad! :-(

I just spent a year apart from my boyfriend, and it was awful. We go through it if that is any comfort! (I don’t know your whole story.) Here is the poem that was most meaningful to me during that time: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poetrymagazine/poems/detail/28891

Oh how poignant! Thanks for sharing that.

My story is pretty simple: I went off to France for grad school while he stayed in the US. We’ve had an ocean and a continent between us for over 2.5 y (he’s in CA), but hope to live together when I finish grad school in < 0.5 y! Now we just have to find a place to do that. Thanks for your encouragement and for the poem.

National Chocolate Cupcake Day? How weirdly specific! I fully expect there to be a National Vanilla Cupcake With Sprinkles And A Raspberry Jam Filling at some point (if there isn’t already).

I’m in a golden haze of Odori Tabacco, which is mostly tobacco and vanilla and is quite wonderful.

Couple months ago I gave a sample of Odori Tabacco to my husband to try- it was such a gorgeous incensy sweet tabacco on him. Too bad it is impossible to find now. I searched discounters and Ebay- nothing!

I think it was discontinued quite a while ago: I found my bottle in a Winners (the Canadian version of TJMaxx) a few years back and it had been repeatedly marked down to a final price of $12.

I can’t think of a replacement for it except maybe Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille, which I’ve never tried. Maybe a 50/50 mix of Serge Lutens Fumerie Turque and Un Bois Vanille?

I received a lot of Byredo samples along with my Iris Nazarena gift – Aedes loaded up the hubby’s order with a ton of Byredo samples. So I’m trying out Super Cedar today.

I should’ve saved this one for Friday because I’m getting a lot of rather boring, nondescript musk and very little cedar. It’s definitely playing a trick on me. Plus, I had to spray half the sample on before I could even smell anything. So it’s playing a dirty trick on me.

Wrong time of the year for summer fragrances; wrong temps for Fall fragrances! I settled on Guerlain Voile d’Ete – light enough for the temps with enough vanilla for the time of year.

It’s also National Meatloaf Day. Now you’ve got an entree and a dessert!

Voile d’Ete is cemented in my brain as a summer scent, but it would also be great for cooler weather, that glow of carnations and vanilla. You know you smell great!

SOTD is Hermés Vetiver Tonka, one of my stalwart summer companions. There is a rumor of cooler weather headed my way this weekend, so I’m holding fast to that hope. If it does turn into a reality, I will be depressing the spray mechanism of some fumes that have been hibernating the whole summer in the crisp depths of my fridge. It’s the small things that make me happy. Although, that being said, I certainly wouldn’t mind a BIG lotto win ????

Happy almost hump day to all!

The travel size has been quite nice and happy this was an option, of course wishing more brands offered this. Like you, I will be moving on to other lovelies as well.

In my continued exploration of blackberry scents, I am in Mure et Musc Extreme today. I had high hopes that it would please me dramatically more than it’s weaker original, worn yesterday. Alas, not so. Consider me tricked, L’Artisan. I shall stick with Jo Malone for my blackberry needs from now on.

I finally broke down, got a black felt pen, and marked a large C and S on each tube to differentiate. Not only are the fonts tiny but metallic, to further frustrate. Then there’s the problem of caps that don’t come off and just a tiny opening, making it difficult to get every last molecule out. I do water the products down and keep the tube upside down but it has something to do with the air inside so I have to squeeze and squeeze. There has to be a better way/ designer!

Wearing my last drops of Prada Infusion D’Iris. Another full bottle that I finish this year and I feel so good about it. Will I miss it? Yes, since I love it. Would I get another full bottle? Yes, but not any time soon. I still have to go thru so many other full bottle scents that I own, not counting minis, decants and samples. But Infusion D’Iris for sure is going to my buy list once again.

Happy Tuesday Everyone! I’m just getting back into town after an “extended weekend”. I went down to New Orleans this weekend to check on my boyfriend and to try and keep his spirits up. He’s doing okay considering all that he has been through. It was really difficult leaving him. We are both feeling the distance and will probably be making some “life – changing” decisions really soon. I miss him already.
My SOTD is Blackberry & Bay by Jo Malone. He really likes this one on me, so I wore it to make me feel a little bit closer to him.

Sycomore today, which is lovely even though it doesn’t smell like a sycamore. If someone made a true western sycamore perfume, I’d buy vats of it!

    SOTD: Daisy Dream.

I had the most incredibly nice scent memory/flashback last night! One of my grandmas always wore Chanel No 5, and I never thought I liked it on my own skin. Something about it just didn’t work for me. BUT…I decided to explore the scent again, and found a 1.7 oz bottle of the EdT for $20 on Ebay. (95% full at least!) The EdT is sooooo good!!!! I was immediately transported back to my grandma’s dressing table, where I would play with all her lipsticks and costume jewelry. It was so good to get a hug from my grandma again! She died 20 years ago, and I still miss her (and all my grandparents!) so much. #Blessed :)

I miss my Grandma also, I spent my summers with her growing up. My son is actually born on her birthday, which takes a bittersweet day for me and turns it into a true celebration of life and love.
I am so glad you are having this beautiful scent memory.
My grandmother wore several really nice fragrances but the scent that brings me back is Biolog shampoo! She always used that in the shower..

I’m wearing Montale Boise Vanille. Major trick! It’s not the sweet woody vanilla you’d expect, something like SL Un Bois Vanille. It’s more like a dry masculine lavender with some vanilla — reminds me of some of the masculine Carons.

Today I spritzed on Guerlain AA Gentiana–grassy green citrus with fruity pear and a dry tonka musk in the base. Very nice and so different from what Guerlain makes now.

I am drinking a mug of MF Montagne de Jade–tropical fruit and flowers. This batch is very fresh–I may need to cut it with some other green tea.

Have a terrific Tuesday, NST people. And a cupcake. You deserve it.

I chose Bucoliques de Provence by L’Artisan Parfumeur. I was thrilled after Ari told me about this perfume. Last week I finally got a sample and today I’m wearing it first time for a full day.
It’s great but on my skin it’s really transparent and first 1 hour has that sharpness (from leather I guess) that is not as pleasant as it could…

Wearing a touch of MFK Aqua Universalis Forte over AU body lotion. It lingers enough for me and should be fresh but not ” fragrant” for an appointment.

I can’t say it better than Bear, above concerning his scrubber, about the medical office I was sent to this morning. The manager told me I couldn’t see the doctor my doctor sent me to because I’d seen someone else in the group previously, and that she was being so accommodating for shipping me to another office to see that doctor!!

I would have loved to spray Secretions Magnifiques at her!

Grrr! (and brrr!) Why must offices be like walk-in refrigerators? I found a great space heater a few years ago that manages to heat only the cubicle where it’s placed and meets safety standards. I don’t know that I could work somewhere that didn’t allow space heaters. I can’t work when my hands are turning blue and locking up from the cold.

SOTD = MFK Ciel de Gum

So unless you know the back story, you’re scratching your head as to what Sky of (Bubble)Gum” is, let alone what it smells like. It’s a trick because as it turns out, this is a contrast in peppery spicy with cuddly amber vanilla musk. I’ll summarize it as cuddly elegance. This was named for the G.U.M. department store to see and be seen in Moscow where you can spend your hard-earned rubles.

If you are into fabulous fragrances, you have to try this! I ordered my bottle from the MFK Paris boutique.

It’s hard to beat Robin’s Monday pick, Hermes Vanille Galante, as a Trick – vanilla and LILY?!?

    Some possibilities:

S-Perfume 100% Love – chocolate and rose; also a treat, but such a surprise!

    Pd’E Tabac Tabou – WTF – horse’s neck? or…

Cartier L’Heure Fougueuse (IV), or Treisieme Heure – that horse mane accord!

L’AP Dzongka or Timbuktu – who but Duchaufour could ever have imagined them?

Etro Anice – anise from top to base note

All the weird CdGs, but especially the ones in the misshapen bottles.

I’ve said before; I repeat: the US gets the best (and strangest) National days. The very idea of a cupcake day, of any persuasion, is enchanting! Enjoy deliciousness, all those who can.

Today I have no idea what to wear, either sartorially or olfactoryily (are either of those words, and do I care if they are not?). It’s awkwardly between seasons here: the wind is cool and sometimes cold, the sun is sometimes warm; winter won’t quite surrender and summer won’t quite resolve to arrive. Stupid weather! I want to wear tropical colours and Cristalle, but that would look silly if a squall comes through. I just dunno.

Half an hour later: now have a SOTD: Lyric, mainly because I couldn’t bear my indecision for another second. It has the absolute merit of crossing seasons, so that’s all good. Clothes remain a complete pickle, though. I wish very much I could go to work in my dressing gown!

Also, if you are a lavender lover, check out Lush Sleepy Hand and Body Lotion and Sandman Dusting powder. In other news, I see what all the Rose Jam fuss is about. Used it today and it is quite delicious.

For the last few mornings I stare first into my clothes closet and then into my perfume cabinet. I’m having a hard time figuring out what to wear with these crazy warm temperatures. I finally decided on PdN Kiss Me Tender today. The almond, marshmallow and hay seem to be working so far.

It’s sunny today in Southern CA, I am in a cozy spray of Gendarme pour homme (very unisex) as a base and Lolita Lempicka on top. Love this site!!!

Is this your first post? If so, hello!

I had a travel-size Gendarme scent ages ago, but I can’t for the life of me remember what it was. Now I’ll have to go see if I can figure it out…

Feel so worn out – my baby kept me awake all night. The weather is weard for this time of year- gloomy, windy and … so warm (75F outside). Decided to wear Chanel 28 La Pausa- delicate and elegant, just right, any of my cold weather scents would bother me today.

Wearing Poudre de Riz today since it’s so warm out and this is so cozy without needing cold weather.

It’s my 19th anniversary today, and the husband and I are heading out soon for one hour reflexology appointments in the village. We’ve been sitting on gift certificates since last Christmas… unsure re dinner, but we will figure it out. I’ll suggest to him we go somewhere with meatloaf and cupcakes.

Am in Hutieme Art Poudre de Riz. This could have been a good pick for Friday except I sprayed the last of my decant (which was sent to me by a lovely NSTer – thank you!) I don’t get much powder, or rice, or rice powder for that matter, but I can see a bit of a cosmetics reference. I’d put it in the same category as 2 other recent discoveries, YSL Cinema and Ginestet Botrytis, although I’m not sure exactly what that category is. Honeyed fruits and flowers with a trace of powder, perhaps? A large decant is definitely in my future.

In other news, I managed to sleep through the night without waking up hacking my guts out and could even breathe through my nose when I got up. Hopefully I’m on the road to recovery here, *crossing fingers*

      I bet you smell fabulous.

Whenever I encounter a fragrance with palisander rosewood it immediately calls to mind the smell of the old Dior Eau Fraiche, a perfect citrus and palisander plus oakmoss. That one leaned a bit masculine, too, but it was a great scent.

Wow, that is really interesting. I discovered Dior Eau Fraîche on a trip to France in 1998 and bought it on the spot. It didn’t occur to me to make that connection. I am going to compare them side by side and see if I can smell those notes. Thanks!
