Tuesday scent of the day 9/6

Posted by Robin on 6 September 2016 249 Comments

hermes-cheval

Happy National Coffee Ice Cream Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Hermès Osmanthe Yunnan. Tea at the moment is Mariage Frères Bouddha Bleu, mixed with a plain sencha to make it a bit less fruity.

Reminder: 9/9 will be Tea Time Friday: wear a fragrance with a tea note.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Hermes Cheval d'Orient Tea/Coffee Pot is $1325 at Michael C Fina.

Like your scent, almost wore it myself. Went with Diam Blonde instead.

Anyone list some perfumes with tea notes?
I know I have tea for two but would love to know of others for Friday.

I have no idea what you have, but here is what I found in my wardrobe. They are mostly fresh tea scents (green tea, mate etc.)

      Heeley Menthe Fraiche
      BOIS 1920 Oltremare
      Carthusia Mediterraneo
      Jacomo Art Collection #08
      Escentric Molecules Escentric 03
      Hermes Osmanthe Yunnan
      Masque Russian Tea
      Pacifica Inc Tahitian Gardenia
Serge Lutens Five O’Clock Au Gingembre

And as addition to Robin’s suggestion, you can go to Fragrantica and search by “tea” note.

To me, the two horse mane Cartiers, L’Heure Fougueuse (IV) and Treizieme Heure, also have a smoky tea note. BK Imperial Tea is a realistic jasmine tea initially but later mostly jasmine and musk. Anne Pliska smells like Constant Comment. 🙂

There are all those Bulgari Colognes au Thé, but I’m not sure they really smell like tea.

Love the horses on the teapot!
I am also continuing the tea theme. Osmathe Yunnan is on my list for this week, but today I chose BOIS 1920 Oltremare. Normally I do not care much for watery fruity florals, but this one is nice.

I love that design too — too fancy for me to actually use, but nice to look at, and the collection has some lovely plates and bowls. If you scroll down here, you can see some of the gorgeous square plates (plus a lot of other fancy Hermes dinnerware):

They are beautiful. I see what you mean when you call them fancy – I am not sure I would use them for serving tea. They are more like interior decorations.

Hello MonTuesday. It definitely feels like a busy Monday here.

I’m in a thorough dousing of Opus III. I had enough left in my sample for a dose today, but then knew I’d not have enough for another and I hate having “half” doses of scents so I just sprayed more until it was done. Really liking how strong the broom is now.

I am wearing Bulgari Eau Parfumée au Thé Bleu, which I like. I bought it in the travel size, which is the perfect amount.

I am drinking a mug of mixed Ceylon made up from samples. It is pretty good.

I watched my son go off to his first day of highschool this morning. I then cried like a baby. Our school district makes high schoolers ride the city bus. I had lobbied to have him take the special needs bus, but he really wanted to be with the other kids. He has a helper for the first two days, then he is on his own. I plan on going perfume sniffing today, for much needed distraction. Sotd at the moment is Black Opium.

Thanks everyone! I did enjoy perfume sniffing. I ended up really liking Black Rose Oud by Trish McAvoy. There is a small boutique here that carries her fragrances. I almost bought it until I heard the price! They told me to wait till Black Friday, when they will give a discount on all purchase’s. My son should be home soon, and when i ask how school was, he will simply say it was fine. Lol.

I chose FM Eau de Magnolia – needed something a little bit bright to counter the foggy, rainy morning we’re having. It’s actually not that bad since it’s close to 60 degrees out, and the plants in the yard are very happy to have the moisture, but it IS just a tiny bit of a come-down after the beautiful day we had yesterday.

Just put out fresh water and mineral salt for Gaze’s sheep… he’s down to 8 from 15 now. (Sold four male lambs, sent the borrowed ram back to his owner, and lost two ewes in the past month to predators. 🙁 Not sure what got the ewes… dogs? coyotes? we haven’t heard the coyotes at all, and usually we do hear them if they’re hunting, so maybe it’s dogs.)

Pantry reorg continues. I’m trying to find a place to put all my small appliances so they’re not taking up space in my limited-counter-space kitchen.

    SOTD is Safari.

Ugh, so sorry about the ewes. I am going to vote for dogs getting your sheep as coyotes would have thrown off an alarm. BUT this is the time of year (in Portland Oregon area at least ) when the coyotes come down looking for prey, catch a ride on the train or both.

LOL! Coyotes on the light rail – only in Portland, right?! We have coyotes roaming the parking lot at my office building fairly frequently, and I cringe thinking about what they’re probably looking for (people’s pets, most likely, since my office complex is smack in the middle of a residential neighborhood).

Don’t know your space constraints, mals, but we bought a freestanding butcher block cabinet where I store my small appliances. The extra surface is welcome and multi-purpose, its relatively portable, and I never have to look at the larger small appliances (food processor, juicer, hand mixer). Just a thought.

So sorry about the ewes. I’d never heard of packs of wild dogs till we lived in New Mexico.

I awoke with a strong craving for L’air de Rien so not a tea scent this morning. I had a headache yesterday and Sunday so it feels great to want to smell something this morning instead of cringing at even the ambient odors.
Saturday night’s dinner with the in-laws was lovely. We went to the moderately fancy but way over my budget steakhouse and the people in the private room next to us were having a rehearsal dinner so I didn’t feel as overdressed as I might have. There were little girls dressed in tulle and sequins and they were having a grand time while managing to be very quiet.
Sunday I had the, um, pleasure of unhooking every component in the entertainment console so my MIL could vacuum, then removing the extraneous cords and transmitters for long-gone components, bundling the cords, and hooking things back up so the blu-ray player works. The cable technician had apparently plugged it in wrong and then refused to come back to fix it. I suspect he was distracted by my MILs fussing. It took all day to do with my pounding head and their well meant “helpful” interruptions, so I feel I earned my pricy dinner the night before.

Happy belated birthday! Which date is your actual bday? I’m curious if we were born on the same day?

Glad you had fun at your birthday dinner. Your husband’s preferences for your attire had me laughing out loud.

I haven’t had time to get to the ocean this year so we went to Beavertail in Jamestown, RI and then had a casual lunch in one of the many restaurants in that area. It was a perfect day with gorgeous weather.

We’re having a real Indian summer here in the Netherlands!
Inspired by Victoria’s review on BdJ about no 5 L’Eau, I’m wearing my later mother’s no 5 EdT, vintage in the old splash bottle.
    As beautiful as it gets.

Aha! I have several frags with tea notes. Today I am in Epic, the last of the tiny Amouage samples I have kicking around. Weirdly, I am smelling a tea note in it–although I grabbed it before I logged onto NST this morning. Anyone else get tea in Epic?

I remember vacillating between this and Lyric way back, and deciding on Lyric. They fit a similar space in my olfactory palace and it seemed redundant to buy both (and expensive!). But now I am wondering if I made the right choice. Epic (woman) seems like it has a little bit more going on… but maybe the grass is always greener, or the rose is always more interesting– in another perfume?

One way to tell: If anyone wants to swap some of their Epic for some Lyric, please let me know. 😉

Testing a spray sample of The Noir this morning, which amazingly does smell like tea to me. Some fig – not my favorite note, but nice here – but none of the roses and other odd things some people say they smell in it.

I will take a shower and switch it up for meetings this afternoon. What goes with warm rain and humidity?

Tea SOTD is Ineke “Chemical Bonding”, which would equate to a sweet iced tea that on closer inspection says “iced tea flavoured drink”. It’s okay, a bit sweet for me and not long lasting. Every now and again I get a little hint of one or other of the main notes, enough to remind me I have something on but not enough to be truly interesting. :^)

Spent a sweaty long weekend trying to pack in as many outdoor projects as possible: took down some shrubs, liberated a huge juniper from (most of) its kudzu captor, and retrofitted a used window into our storage shed. Had to build a sliding track, but it actually opens/closes (and locks!). And each project we tackle together seems to threaten divorce just slightly less than the one before. Home improvement, I guess.

So tired of the heat, all that appeals is Hove Spanish Moss talc. I need to visit them again and get a few more scents.

Yes, there were 3 or 4 canes of some kind of berry bramble in with the shrub we cut down, along with the poison ivy previously discovered (the sumac turned out not to be the poisonous type). Proceed with caution. 🙂

Mine agrees with yours, but thinks I’m answering to the wrong master pretty much all the time. So, she’s very cuddly. It’s nice! But I do wish she had a bit more feline dignity.

Cats are so helpful. Mom had a banking phone call to make this morning and when I looked in to ask a question, observed that she had three attentive feline financial advisors/paperweights/pen tasters. She didn’t look like she was enjoying it much but the fur girls were having a wonderful time.

Cool and drizzly here and feeling like fall, so I broke out the spicy carnation goodness of DSH Oeillets Rouges. I did the yard work thing yesterday so the back yard is looking good. The front yard is next but it’s so much bigger I am putting it off for now.

    Wearing Galop again…

I had a rough go w/ it the first time but enjoyed it more and more as the day wore on. I think my nose took issue w/ the quince in it perhaps. I think someone chimed in that there is cassis so that might be it too.

Today I am enjoying it so far.

I don’t have any tea scents (I don’t really enjoy the way tea smells, unless it smells of something else) and this week is, I’m pretty sure, the last of the summer heat, and I’ve got office hours today (ah, the semester is back on). No one will show up to them, of course, but something pleasant and inoffensive is called for. So, I’m in Lime, Gardenia, and Benzoin.

The water in my town is very bad, and it’s going through an extra bad period right now. I’m piling on the ice, but it’s not helping that much. The water on campus has a slight grassy taste (which, to be fair, is not the worst it’s ever tasted here).

I remember reading about bars in New York that sold ice cubes made from mineral water. It seemed an absurd affectation until I had my first taste of a coke with heavily chlorinated ice. That was a real “what the ACTUAL f**k?!” moment, and a reminder of how lucky we are in Birmingham to have our water piped in direct from the Welsh mountains. :^)

There was an “artisanal ice” trend a few years ago, so you your first reaction might have been right, too. The NYC water has pretty much always tasted fine to me, but perhaps my palate is traumatized.

In NYC I’d consider that an “absurd affectation” as NYC water is tasteless, or good-tasting, compared to water I’ve tasted in other cities. Which is always such a surprise to me because this is one of the dirtiest citiest I’ve seen.

Yes to Hermes! and to teapot envy.

SotD = Iris Ukiyoe. No tea and no violets in this one, but it reminds me of a violet-scented black tea I drank very hot with too much sugar when I was a college student. A foodie friend didn’t like the tea and gave it to me because “it smelled like perfume.”

I’ll follow Robin’s lead today and delicately sniff from my sample of Osmanthe Yunnan. I like it in the vial and on paper. On skin the freesia and leather turn to suffocating tomato vine which is a no thank you.

But I knew there was something important there when I first sniffed OY. It became my gateway to true love with Vanille Galante, Iris Ukiyoe, and others from Hermes.

With a nod to Hajusuuri, I’m layering two Demeters… The Baihao Yinzhen Tea with a Black Ginger. I don’t have a lot of tea scents, so maybe I’ll play with layering this week…

In the category of strange, vivid dreams…last night I dreamt my sister and I had someone “curating” a scent and lipstick color for each of us. Basically blind gift boxes for each of us. The lipstick for me was a Chanel in a very deep, dark mauve/plum (not a color I’ve ever worn) and the fragrance was Chanel No. 5, which is actually my sister’s favorite scent. Although it all implied that I was quite the sophisticate, in the dream I was disappointed. I wanted Chanel No. 19… I woke up kind of chuckling….

I don’t know what perfume to wear but will probably go with something like Ostara or Eau Premiere and I’ll dress normal in my jeans and Dr Martens…ugh, school assemblies, school blazers…run for your lives, girls!

Good morning, all I’ve reached Hump Day, but I wish I hadn’t , ‘cos too much to do! Ack! And the students come back next week! Double ack!

I’m wearing the ever desirable Ambre Narguile. Oh dear, how much do I love this scent? Enough that a back up bottle is on its way home to me even as I type, that’s how much! With the knowledge that I will never run out, I went a little crazy this morning and added two sprays on my tummy. The dear man says I smell like pudding, and he is entirely correct: I smell like an apple crumble enhanced with sweet spices. The tobacco note lasts about .5 of a nano-second on me, which I am, curiously, OK about.

Must dash off furiously in all directions. I want to be in the office by 7 this morning, because I need to write an exam paper (brings out the lurking evil in me) and much feedback on a chapter of someone’s thesis. The chapter makes my eyes cross, it’s do bad, so wish me luck. Be well, all.

Eeek, very late to the party. I found out today that I have to do a dog and pony show next week and I am not thrilled. It’s good exposure for me but I so would prefer to have been told earlier and/or given a topic that I am more passionate about. Anyway, this too shall pass although I may have to scrap my Tea Week in favor of Chanel No.19 all day everyday for the next 8 days.

    SOTD = L’Occitane The Vert
