Wednesday scent of the day 8/31

Posted by Robin on 31 August 2016 287 Comments

apple-bag

It's Hump Day and Van Morrison's birthday. What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in Dawn Spencer Hurwitz Kaleidoscope. I smell fantastic.

Reminder: On 9/2, our project will be How far does the apple fall from the tree? Wear a pillar fragrance on one arm, and one of its flankers on the other. Suggested by Happy888cat.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: image is Apple Bag / Sumka Yabloko ("A bag for energy.") designed by COMPANY (Aamu Song & Johan Olin), €115.

Thanks to that closeout sale at STC..I am in Les Elixirs Charnels Gourmand Cocquin
Tea is China Oolong from Simpson & Vail

Went for my second jog this morning, I did one last week, still sporting 3 sports bras.

I’ve tried the multiple sports bra trick to keep things from jiggling and chafing, but I end up feeling uncomfortably restricted–almost like it’s hard to breathe; kind of claustrophobic. Is there a trick to keep things nice and secure but not feel like my bras are trying to kill me like a boa constrictor?

I am nursing..so I really take care of that area..
I layer two sports bras-but make sure they are the right fit and use a jogging tank top that has build in support as my “third”.
After trying out the right combination I felt that then, I can breath!
I hope you are well Koyel!

I have heard that nursing really does a number on nipple pain 🙁 I hope you’re doing mostly ok with it.

I’m well, thanks 🙂 Super-duper busy and stressed out but I hope the stress will ease up in, oh, six months or so….

I feel uncomfortingly restricted wearing just one sports bra. 😉 One of the reasons why I don’t run.

Great job on running more! I love reading about this sort of stuff since I’ve really been upping my fitness routine this past year. If wearing one or 3 bras works, then do it! Good on you for finding something that helps you exercise more.

I picked up decants of Vega and French Kiss (how’s that for opposites) at the same sale. My husband loved the French Kiss. Jessica found it “glossy,” but I liked it–definitely more than I liked La Petite Robe Noire, which is also a sweet crowd pleaser. It was a fun sale, but those purchases may be my last from Guerlain for a while if the decants are no longer available. ;(

This brand has a range of support levels as well as sizes. I haven’t tried, but some of the styles look similar to Wacoal’s underwired sports bra, which I recommend trying. Title Nine has something called the Frog Bra which seems like it would work if it’s right for your body type.

For something quality and widely available you could also try VS, which makes killer high-impact (for running, etc.) sports bras that are available by individual bra size. There are even 2 front-close versions. Plus, I happened to see yesterday that they’ve got a deal going for a bra and sport pants for $50. (And the stores will order you the right size with free shipping if they’re out of stock.)

I am in the same boat…I really cannot afford to spend any more $$$ on non necessities and I really need to start budgeting…this summer got way out of hand! I may have to take a break from NST so as to not be tempted until I get my finances in order 🙁

          • kpaint says:
            31 August 2016 at 4:43 pm

I’ve bought very few samples & decants this year and it’s quite liberating. The way they pile up and blend in together and get forgotten about is stress-inducing for me.

That said, I’ve placed 2 orders in the past couple of weeks and am about to place another one today. Perfume is the only thing I look forward to when winter approaches, and where I live we only have 2 seasons: summer and winter. In a bad year like this one summer only lasts 6 weeks, so I’m ready for some scented comfort to get me through the transition. Plus there’s a wider array to sample.

But stick to your no buy for now! Best to you 🙂

I hadn’t either and pretty much gave up drinking coffee for a while too. I found it at The Fresh Market, which is really close to our house and decided to try it. I absolutely love it. I’ve NEVER been able to drink black coffee before, but I do now with this stuff because it’s not bitter at all.

Somewhat counter intuitive, but the darkest roasts tend to have lower acid, less stomach upsetting compounds. They are also a little sweeter generally. Here’s an article if you are interested– I just googled it to get some science link to back me up–so there may be much better articles out there.

Cold brewed coffee is often touted as being less acidic. I was drinking it this summer (from concentrates) and found it upset my stomach more than when I drink my home-brewed hot coffee. Tasty, though!

Hahah, it may seem hipster ish, but I see it more as being “coffee for acid reflex victims”. I doubt many coffee aficionados would drink this stuff and may scoff at it a bit, especially since it’s flavored, but whatever. I really like it and it doesn’t bother my stomach at all, which is a huge plus. Brewing my own cold coffee this summer has been so helpful. It’s been so blistering hot and humid that a cold injection of caffeine has helped a lot.

It smells great at the opening–citrus and pepper and herbally green–but it fades pretty fast to violet leaf musk with a sprig of mint. Good, not great.

You could talk yourself into it if you can find it on sale and need a general cologne in an above-average bottle. I was given a bottle of Mandragore and it hangs out in my fridge in the summer for cooling, and fleeting, spritzes.

Love it! But it has humbled me in that I really don’t know my notes at all! I have been trying to wear things first before reading reviews so as to form my own opinion…what I got was gardenia and white florals (tuberose?) and sweetness…turns out what I am REALLY smelling is herbs and mimosa and some flower/shrub indigenous to Southern Italy (name escapes me at the moment)

I’m wearing Baptême du Feu for the first time. I couldn’t really follow the opening, it was all over the place and I struggled to form a coherent perception of the scent. It has now settled down to an animalic gingerbread. Not a child’s gingerbread, but one where the baker has forgot to add sugar and used saw dust (probably from cedar) instead of flour and kept the cookies in an old leather pouch. It seems to smell darker to my nose than to many others – after the first hour, I don’t get any citrus at all and only the faintest traces of something floral.

While I was confused by the first 15-30 minutes, I’m really liking it now. I don’t think it’ll be among my favourite SLs, but it’s interesting, unlike many other recent Lutens perfumes.

It is worth trying. I imagine it can be a total fail on some people and also vary from one wear to another. It seems to be getting lighter on me now, or maybe just fainter?

It’s not a crowd pleaser and that endears it to me 🙂

That sounds very confusing. Unsweetened gingerbread in saw dust? It sounds very dark and maybe well suited to winter.

It’s not very dark (and getting lighter now), but it’s not at all a happy fun gingerbread on me. Immediately after spraying I thought I will never need to smell it again, but now I want to give it another go – I suspect it might smell different next time.

Unsweetened gingerbread and saw dust makes me think of heavy, dark fruitcake made by monks. The booze-laden kind that weighs about 3 lbs per slice, is dark dark brown, and not at all sweet except a few strips of candied fruit. I wonder if it’s like that?

I think it’s drier and I get quite a bit of leather/castoreum. But there is an affinity: J sniffed it and said ‘raisins’, as in something baked and spicy.

I’m not entirely sure who would buy a bottle of this, but I don’t think you’d regret trying it. It’s interesting to follow and I liked the phase where it was at its most leathery-woody. I like it at the moment (three hours in) as well, but it seems to be fading already…

This sounds interesting if not something one would buy a whole bottle of. I am taking it, from your description, that it’s a lot less sweet than Dries van Noten which always reads a gingery to me (not sure why).

Yes, I don’t find it sweet at all, at least on the Lutens scale. But I see from Fragrantica that many do, so I should probably not make any great pronouncements ????

Your gingerbread sounds like something that Baldrick might have come up with in the trenches 😉

I’ve kind of given up on trying Serges. He has got this überexpensive line going which annoys me, plus a lot of his, that I have tried, are ultimately not my thing. This one has at least the merit of sounding interesting.

I’m with you on that. Of those I’ve tried, I’ve either been “meh”, straight-up unimpressed, or not my thing. So I’ve put the brakes on for now.

I haven’t found anything I really liked for years, maybe since La Fille de Berlin – and I enjoyed even that less than most. Like you, I’m also annoyed with the super-expensive line, plus the Soviet-gate really angered me. But I still try them all: the export line is easily accessible here, so it’s not difficult.

I had already dismissed this one as well, but had to backpaddle once the good part arrived. Not sure if it’s worth lifting the Serge-boycott, however.

It’s laziness as much as anything else really. ( so no proper boycot 😉 ) And I’m with you on La Fille de Berlin; it is good, but there are other dark roses that I enjoy more.

I think I might be mostly frustrated with the enormous amount of fragrance he releases and the unlikely fact that one of them will be as good as ISM, Sarrasins or Chergui.

AG Nuit Étoilée edp, wanted something “cool” and I like the pine/mint/incense vibe of this one. The edt had too much citrus for me.

The edp is so much better than the edt, and I adore citrus, but in edp NE smells more balanced and more finished.

    Happy Hump Day!

    1) Cool morning and with rain later on (thank goodness- just so dusty and smoggy with the heat, dryness and smoke from the wildfires in Eastern Oregon blowing through.)

    2) SOTD: Sycamore, with added drops of Coromandel at wrists. Because why not. Perfect for a cool morning! I smell like a delicious hug by a very grand and rich aunt.

    3) And after all sturm und drang, I signed on my house yesterday, and take possession today at 5 PM! Guys, so much paperwork, and so many promises to pay. Honestly I am so very happy that this is finally done- it’s a type of stability that I honestly have been needing in my life, after a very vagabond 20s and early 30s. It took the deaths in my family to really focus my needs down to what was important to me.

    4) And now, for cleaning, packing, and planning decor…! Oy!

Ha, oh let’s see, over the last few years I’ve gotten him a few Amouages,(um, Fate, epic, interlude i think), the Vetiver Extraordinaire, Tauer Vetiver Dance, Incense Extreme, LdDM, lonestar Memories, Guerlain Vetiver, and some other random things. I dragged him to Sephora once to have him try stuff like Eau Sauvage, TerreD’Hermes, etc, but he didnt like any of it enough.
I think he finds it all too fussy and just uses his teenage boy spray can of some crap from Old Spice. He almost never likes perfumes I love and has a vocabulary of about 4 categories – old lady, baby powder, flowers, and forest fire. It’s so fun though, to put on the skankiest musky thing I can find and hear him say i smell like baby powder! Maybe someday I’ll find something for him.

Continuing (somewhat doggedly) what has become a bit of a trudge through the June (!) sample pack from Blooms. The June theme was showcasing the use of ambroxan. SOTD today is Frapin “The Orchid Man”.
    Top: bergamot and black pepper (so I want to yawn and sneeze at the same time);
    Mid: Jasmine and leather;
    Base: amber, oakmoss and patchouli.

I chose a set of Frapin samples a while back, waiting for cooler weather so I can have a Frapin week. I chose the five whose notes interested me most, and this wasn’t among them. And how right I was! :^D

Ah, honestly I picked some to try out based on the written notes but haven’t tried them yet. I am most looking forward to 1697, 1270, Caravelle Épicée, Terre de Sarment and Speakeasy. Paradis Perdu is in the July Blooms pack (juniper theme that month, so again my expectations are low).

SOTD = Mugler Les Exceptions Chyprissime

OK, I thought I’ve tried this before at a much smaller dose. Anyway, I used 3-4 aprays from my sample and all I am getting is black pepper, heaps and heaps. While not a scrubber, it goes into the “my sample is enough to last me a lifetime” category. Money saved.

Despite not wearing No.19, I held my spine straight when someone escalated to my boss (who happens to be on vacation) just because I said No to turning around a transaction overnight when it normally takes a minimum of 2 weeks, including due diligence. I outlined everyrhing that needs to happen and as of now, my caution was heeded and people came to theie senses that they have to reverse a decision because they did not go throygh all the steps.

Go you! You deserve the spine stiffener of your choice after work today.

I had a co-worker (years ago) who would respond to “emergency” requests by saying “lack of planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part.” A bit trite but she had a point. We worked in a financial services unit for an insurer, so we had to follow the rules.

I wouldn’t dare make such a statement in an office these days. Too many people on too high a tightrope lately. If you ask me, everybody needs more perfume therapy.

Thanks for your support, everyone. Who needs No. 19 when I have friends like you :-). That said, it does call for retail therapy (I have a Saks gift card and a $50 off coupon and will use only if I can combine). As to another type of spine stiffener, I am planning on dipping into my newly-bought stash of dark chocolate with tequila center – I’ve never had one before but it sounds like a fitting end of day treat….only one because I tend to oversleep when I have alcohol (rice wine type) the night before!

She posited that if cattle gets soothed when they go through a cow chute, why not people? It worked for her!

Late last night I submitted the first draft of a report I’ve been working on for thee weeks–it was almost 3 AM in DC–but hey I got it in on deadline in my neck of the woods… so today I am celebrating. Since I plan to be at home most of the day, I thought I’d give Miyako (Auphorie) another shot. The lovely Clarissa sent it to me a while back. I gave it a quick sniff and got a burning leather thing with something very very sweet in the background. Fact is, I was intrigued. I set it aside for when I could give it more thought.

So today… it still went on with a blast of something sharp and chemically to my nose, chemically leather. But this baby is a morpher. It soon settled into an incense resin, like the scent of those natural joss sticks you get at organic markets–before you burn them. Its next stage, the one I am in now, is a patchouli strawberry thing, with hints of sandalwood. There is not supposed to be strawberry in this, so my nose is obviously turning the intended stone fruit into strawberry… a little headshoppy but interesting. I definitely DO NOT need a bottle, but I am enjoying the scent ride.

Anyone else have a take on this one?

It does shape-shift quite a bit, but I always get a very pungent cheesiness, which might be the sandalwood. I find it fascinating and I like to give it the occasional sniff, but probably won’t wear it out around humanity.

I can see where you would get moldy basement–the sweet behind the animalic leather. Sort of chemically and rotting… Have you tried Maria Candida Gentile’s Elephant? I haven’t, but I have been thinking it will be a funky sweet scent as well.

I enjoyed Miyako’s permutations, but it may be my nose that is broken!

Started out in Cashmere Musc by Illuminum and now testing Vanille 44. Which is lovely and definitely not a boring or predictable or sweet vanilla. Sort of slightly smoky (just slightly) with a rummy sweetness to the extent there is any sweetness. It reminds me of a long evening in late autumn somewhere with a golden fire and glowing leather chairs drinking the smoothest whisky or rum all bathed in warm golden light – the feeling it evokes is definitely ‘golden’, just trying to decide if I like this enough to go for it next month (suspect I prefer Vanille D’Iris though simply as it is more me).

Hiya hajusuuri, Apres l’Ondee wears almost like an eau de Cologne for me, but instead of all citrus, it has a delicate and very pretty floral bouquet at the heart with faint carnation and violet, and a bit of anise and herbs. There is a nice burst of citrus to start and a soft musky base.

It is fleeting so I can understand your decant smelling of alcohol. But like a good cologne, I notice Apres l’Ondee comes back to life when I am standing in the sun. As I warm up it starts to waft nicely. I’m so glad I tried it and hope you might give it a try again.

Searching for instructions for opening Chanel parfum flacons, I found this on Basenotes :

“The appropriate way to open any Chanel parfum is to take a long hot bath, carefully shaving every stub of out of place body hair. Moisturize well with fragrance free almond oil and put hair in rollers. This gets harder….tie on a scarf and put on big dark glasses to dart up the street for a mani-pedi. Return home, with car windows slightly down if longer hair is not quite dry. Spritz hair with fragrance free hairspray and blow dry on low. Allow to cool while applying make up. Apply lipstick to match manicure. Blot. Gloss. Remove rollers and finger comb for loose messy curls. Be gentle so as not to dent fresh manicure which may not be fully cured.

    Put on :
    a. satin negligee
    b. sexy black dress
    c. nothing

Recline on fainting couch. Open bottle. Apply sparingly using whatever body part seems most appropriate at the time. Replace stopper. Relax your arm, but retain the bottle in the hand.

    Smile. Close eyes.”

Regardless, it looks like it’ll be turning back into summer around here at long last — no fog for the last two mornings, and temps climbing back into the 80s. I’m wearing many sprays of Neroli Portofino in celebration and to smooth the rough edges of what’s been a rough week so far.

In Sarah Jessica Parker’s Stash today and loving it. Potent, long-lasting, and when mixed with a little Narciso Rodriguez for Her Musc oil… divine.

It wasn’t what I expected. Expectations were for something a little more sweet, a little less earthy, and a little more femme. (Not femme as in floral but femme as in Chanel’s quote about a woman should smell like a woman, not like a flower.) Have no idea why those were my expectations given the list of notes, having read Burr’s The Perfect Scent, and SJP’s description of Stash that involves euro-rail mansweat, lol. Guess it’s hard to override from my mind the perfect images of SJP in her pink tutu and ballet slippers for Lovely promos.

When I walked into Ulta, you could smell it, Stash. The scent practically formed it’s own force field around the display, warding off other competing scents while acting as a tractor beam, luring me to those black striped glass bottles with the amber juice glowing inside. Hovering invisible in the air were giant heaps o’ frankincense (olibanum), black pepper, sage and vetiver. I was all, Hot. Damn. Bring it. Aside from Kate Walsh’s discontinued (wth?) Boyfriend, this is the only frankincense my skin chemistry does not morph into some dreadful medicinal weirdness. Nope, Stash was not at all what I expected but very unique (in the mass-market sea at least) and well made, with high quality materials that are blended so intelligently… I bought the edp and the elixir oil. Been wearing it for 3 days straight and it’s my first buyer’s remorse-free retail fragrance purchase in years.

Hey, if you see this, can you tell me what the base of the elixir oil is? Trying to find out if it’s a “real” oil or just a silicone based “dry oil”.

            Hi Robin,

Unfortunately, only the box listed the ingredients and I tossed it in the trash. Thought Ulta would have ingredient list on its website, like Sephora, but nope. :/ Stash feels different from silicone dry oils I’ve had before. Feels like a mix of natural maybe with a little silicone? Stash elixir has a consistency to me similar of Josie Maran’s Argan oil or Tarte’s maracuja oil. Less slippery, more absorbent, and longer-lasting scent than silicone-based stuff I’ve tried.

Many thanks Jenni! I was also surprised not to find the ingredients online, even on SJP’s website. Glad it at least appears to have some natural oils.

I know! My first thought was, “Um, pretty sure publishing ingredient list is law in USA (FDA regulations or something, right?) .” Tempted to make the half hour return trip to Ulta just to look at the box. If I do, I’ll snap a pick and report back. : )

Glad to hear you like it. I was sooo close to being able to try it yesterday while I was at my mall, but I never made it into Ulta. Soon, though…

I’m sampling Hiram Green Dilettante today–it’s not really green, like No. 19, but greener than I prefer in a scent that isn’t green, if I am making any sense at all. It’s very pretty and I will enjoy the sample but I don’t think I need a FB.

PSA–For those of you holding off on purchases or who don’t have enough perfume, Osswald NY is having a 15% off sale until 9/3 with code Hellofall. I have my eye on a Profumum and an MDCI…

Testing Elizabeth and James Nirvana Rose today. Woody-spicy rose. In the seconds after spritzing it on, I could individually pick out the three notes (rose, vetiver, and geranium). Now it’s a nice mix, where I can’t quite tell if I can smell the rose or vetiver more. If it has decent longevity, there is definitely a rollerball in my future because this will be great for fall/winter.

I tested it the other night and got a heavy dose of patchouli. The hippie, not the clean variety. But I had 3 or 4 other scents going on at the same time, so I’ve not given it a good wear yet. Bourbon was yummy – smoky booze, but sweet so I probably won’t try it again until the temps really start to dip.

I got both in a 4ml freebie set with a Sephora order with code “newcrew” btw.

Now Jour D’Hermes has worn off, I’m planning on layering Marni with Heeleys Hippie Rose to see if I can make it last a bit longer.
Any Ezra Furman fans on NST?- I went to see him at a tiny venue ( it won NME best small venue last year.) in Ramsgate on Monday night, and he, and his band The boyfriends were incredible. it was one of the best gigs/concerts I’ve been to, and we got to meet him afterwards which was amazing. Isn’t it fascinating how performers can be such extroverts on stage, and quite shy in real life?!
I’m still flying high on the wonderful experience, and really excited about seeing him play at The RoundHouse, Camden in October.

I never heard of him, but I youtubed a video. I like his style. Seems like a fun time. Seeing a band you love perform a great show, then meeting them, is a perfect buzz! The last part only happened to me once with an obscure band(The Veils)and he was also very shy and awkward. Maybe that’s a Thing.

Wearing the tiniest bit of a sample of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanilla. I am getting mostly vanilla from it now – probably a good thing.

Tried out Stash by SJP yesterday. Very woody, reminded me of Wonderwood by CdG but I think I like the Wonderwood better. Something in the Stash reminded me of an empty pickle jar.

I was out sniffing and shopping yesterday afternoon and finally bought a bottle of Nirvana Black after stalking it for a year. I have the oil and wear it a lot but it does not last at all, unusual for an oil.

Woke up to a warm rainy day (highly unusual in Seattle where rain is normal but rain + warm is not.) Spritzed on Mon Jardin by Bottega Profumiera, one of the most beautiful green florals I’ve smelled. It was one of this year’s Olfactif picks (probably in the spring, which it’s most suited to) and is probably one of the last warm-weather perfumes I’ll wear as the weather seems to already have turned to fall.

It’s now cold and wet, Mon Jardin has worn off and I may put YSL Paris on. I got to thinking about it while contemplating which YSL one should wear to an exhibit of his clothing (which I’ll be seeing here in Seattle in November.) Paris, Rive Gauche or Opium? Or do I need to buy some Y and Cinema before deciding? And is it weather-dependent or should the perfume match the era of the fashion? (I’m not sure if the exhibit will include 60s, 70s or 80s, or all of the above.) Or should one wear the most definitively YSL fragrance, whatever that may be? Which would you choose?

If I bave to give this much thought to which perfume to wear, I would probably never leave my house. I say wear your favorite of the line 🙂
