Wednesday scent of the day 6/29

Posted by Robin on 29 June 2016 285 Comments

pantone peach echo

Happy Hump Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I am cheating this morning: no fragrance on my person, but I'm trying 4160 Tuesdays Goddess of Love & Perfume (big fruity chypre) on a scent strip.

Reminder: on 7/1, wear a fragrance by Olivia Giacobetti, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: the Pantone color is Peach Echo, one of the top 10 colors for Spring 2016 — "PANTONE 16-1548, Peach Echo, a shade that emanates friendlier qualities, evoking warmth and accessibility. It is an all-encompassing, tempered companion in the playful orange family."

I love Lodolite. I’m still kicking myself for not buying the most gorgeous strand at the bead shop last summer. Sometimes I shouldn’t listen to that thrifty voice of reason or my grumbling husband.

They are actually good, I just wanted something more earthy and floral the two I sampled weren’t robust enough for the mood I am in today. Let me know when you try your sample and we can discuss. Which one do you have?

ELdO Tom of Finland. You’d think it would be pure sex but it’s an outdoorsy pine-needle leather, soft and dusty and kind of nuzzly. Comfort leather. I really like it.

Off to a bad start today. In addition to messing up my nail polish, I couldn’t find the samples I just ordered anywhere, and got worried I accidentally threw them out in their bubble wrap. I didn’t find them in the kitchen trash, but couldn’t really bring myself to sift all the way to the bottom (especially since it was well after 9am).

Neither of those things is really too dramatic, but compounded with an already frustrating week at work, it had a strangely big impact.

Wearing Jasmin et Cigarette and desperately wanting to give up on today and start over tomorrow.

I think we are more on edge in general. I hope things improve. I wasted time counting samples and found three that just weren’t sent. Had to E mail about that. Then I think I really need to be doing something else. Then I turn on the TV. Then circled back to focusing on perfume which is generally meditative and therapeutic.

I’m in Voile de Violette by SSS and really wanting a bottle of this. I took it on vacation with me and it was one of two fragrances that lasted the day (through morning and afternoon hiking – the other frag to last was Forest Walk).

However, I *always* want a bottle of something. And that got me thinking about curbing my perfume desires a bit – mostly because financially I can’t afford to buy much of anything right now, but still….

I put all my perfume in the basement while I was on vacation so they wouldn’t go off in a hot house. I’ve yet to actually put them all back in the bedroom because the temps have been so weird lately. So I’ve just been grabbing samples of stuff to wear and keep in one of my drawers. I’m almost liking the idea of doing this until I’ve gone through a large amount of my sample stash, but we’ll see how long that lasts…

I recently moved my perfumes to a cooler part of the house, too. (Small collection, it only took 5 minutes. 😀 ). The samples and decants are now in a drawer, the bottles are on a low shelf. It has been fun to sort through the samples and use them up. I started putting the empty vials in a shot glass so I can see my progress.

The only downside has been that the bedroom clothes closet where the fragrances used to reside no longer smells like a perfume shop. So I tucked a few bars of lavender soap in there to freshen things up.

Not in NYC but am in a small apartment with very little storage. I just realized this a.m. that the 2 bottles I bought online yesterday will max out my current perfume storage drawer and I have nowhere to expand… I’ll have to be creative.

As to samples, I’ve realized they just stress me out so I’ve cut way back on buying them. For some reason carded manufacturer’s samples don’t and I’ve bought quite a few of late. But the carded ones are way easier to store and organize, so maybe that has something to do with it.

In celebration of yesterday’s little rain shower that perked my yard up and partially refilled my rain bucket, I’m wearing Terracotta le Parfum. I consider this almost a textbook summertime scent. It really never feels very “me” but I enjoy it even if I’m constantly looking for the woman who smells so nice.
Today I’m packing up and will be spending the afternoon in the car with no radio, a grumpy husband (because of the no radio), and two indignant cats. We’re off to Mom’s for a week of frolicking (the cats), and back-breaking labor (the humans). The not having to scoop the cat box or wash dishes and the chance to swim in the river make it all worthwhile.

I feel the same way about “textbook” beachy summer scents. They’re fun and can be really transportive but they never feel quite “me,” so I’m always a bit self conscious when I wear them. I also tend to enjoy them more in spring – in anticipation of warm weather to come – than during summer itself.

I’m wearing En Passant because a) I love it b) it’s by Giacobetti and c) my FM travel spray case has just arrived. I am so glad that all the Malles are available as single travel sprays – for most things, this is exactly the amount I need. And the red travel case is beautiful, so I don’t miss the bottles at all (also, 30 euros seems a very reasonable price in today’s perfume world).

It of course depends – for people who are loyal to a handful of scents, it would make no sense. But I’m very promiscuous and while I would always need a full bottle of, say, Chanel Cristalle, I definitely don’t need a FB of Portrait of a Lady.

Also, many people would never be able to afford a bottle of Carnal Flower – or any other Malle, for that matter. If one really likes it, 10ml is much better than nothing.

FM is one of those lines that is *so* much more expensive in the US than in the Euro-zone. I stocked up when I was lucky enough to be in Paris in January. The 10ml are genius as they do allow many more people to experience the perfumes and for many of them, that’s all I’d ever need. (I actually bought 100ml of Une Rose, I love and wear it so much, but I am a little crazy. And I never would have spent the money in US dollars.)

Gosh, No! My husband sprayed our tree trunks with insecticide as far as he could reach. That hopefully killed the some caterpillars and their eggs. The hair on the their spines contains histamine which can cause itchy rashes in people who are allergic. Someone I know contracted a respiratory infection from mowing his grass and needed antibiotics. Many of the trees in my yard have been decimated. Except for the green grass, it could be fall. Hopefully, the trees will recover next year. The only thing we can do is scrape their eggs off the tree bark and let them sit in soapy water for a few days to kill them. The cycle is beginning to slow down. I’m seeing less of them everyday. Thank goodness!

The dental school is really annoying me along with working in a bakery. I normally have Fridays off but since it’s the holiday weekend, I have to work Friday and have to cancel my dentist appointment. It sucks that the tooth that the student worked on, part of the tooth broke and I’m trying to get into the dentist today. So far, I’m getting nothing but the voicemail. So it looks like I am going to have to reschedule that appointment.

Right now, I’m testing out Interlude Man and not caring for it too much. I smell like a dirty, stale ash tray. I think it’s the oregano and the agarwood smoke that’s doing it. After my shower, I will probably wear Amouage Epic, Memoir or Lyric today.

I’m thinking about it and I did hear back from the school. The student that is working with me isn’t in the school today because he has meetings that last quite a while but the receptionist is giving him my message and hopefully I will hear from him on what to do in the meantime until my appointment on Wednsday. Besides scrubbing that area really good and using mouthwash, I can’t think of what else to really do besides that and watch for an infection.

Clove works well as an anti-septic, as well as an anti-inflammatory and numbing agent. That’s the reason dentists use clove oil on gauze to pack the socket of a pulled tooth if the socket becomes dry while healing.

          I have popped a whole clove into a broken tooth if I can’t get a same-day appointment

Yes, yes I have those slide over glasses but I really wanted something comfy and very stylish for walking around town or biking. And I think in a few months I am going to get some readers for the lab.

Gosh, it seems like there are some common themes among us! It’s been a discombobulating week for me as well.

Robin, thanks for the PSA via twitter regarding confirmation of the discontinuation of Absolue Pour le Soir (sob). This comes right on the heels of my declaration that I will NOT be buying anything until I get what I have sorted. Being the rational sort, I have just realized that buying a new bottle will actually save me money when compared to the cost of the prolonged (probably ineffective and no fun!) therapy sessions that would address my (supposed) perfume addiction.

I’m wearing Puredistance White which was gifted to me by a perfume fairy in a package so gorgeous and decadent that I burst into tears. Thank you!

Does anyone here have any influence with Francis Kurkdjian? If so please ask him to sell Absolue in a smaller bottle! I am crazy about this perfume but don’t need any more than 15 or 30 mls (its strong stuff). I’d probably even go for a 50 ml bottle if it was available. I suppose I will just have to make due with a decant, but I would really prefer a pretty bottle.

I am feeling unfortunately congested and kinda icky this morning, so no SOTM, yet. It does not seem fair to get sick over the summer–I can’t even blame my students! I am torn between ignoring it and continuing with my endless to-do list (a summer staple for many teachers) and letting it go for a day or two and resting properly. I know I should rest, but there’s SOOOoooo much to do–including replacing the ceiling fan that came crashing down a couple days ago! (Good riddance, really, it’s an ugly thing!)

I was so busy yesterday I didn’t have time to put on perfume and dinner consisted of potato chips, cherries, and asparagus since the new dog pushed the microwave on the floor and broke it. Vacation is coming up on Sunday and is starting to look good. Today I’m sampling Le Labo Santal 33 and it is an odd, Australian sandalwood/pine scent on me. Interesting, but I don’t need any more of it. Money saved!

I only know of this one and the other that Giacobetti did for l’Artisan that have it in the name. Both are great (I think but not many people agree), and both seem to be discontinued. So, if you are not already crazy about them, perhaps better not to sample at this point? I was too late in the game for Fleur de Carotte, sampled it, loved it, and am now reduced to hoping that l’Artisan will reissue it. Of course, I can send you a sample of Honore des Pres.

I like Pantone’s Peach Echo. I wore similar colors all the time when I was in high school and college.

SotD = Hiris over the lovely whisper of yesterday evening’s Geisha Vanilla Hinoki.

I’m smelling a peach or apricot echo as I sniff a sample of Promesse de l’Aube. I like sniffing the vial much better than the little dab on the inside of my elbow. I would definitely enjoy smelling it on someone else. I thought it would lean ylang-floral-oriental-vanilla but somehow I’m getting a more austere, maybe chypre, grown-up perfume vibe. Not what I expected but still very beautiful.

hee hee, I’m reading the novel Crazy Rich Asians. One of the characters enters a room where she is “crushed into a fleshy hug, the heady scent of Eau d’Hadrien filling her nose.” Much of the story is set in Singapore, so Eau d’Hadrien sounds right.

Pretty warm here today and wearing Annick Goutal Vetiver. The marine notes of driftwood and seaweed, among others, make this fragrance unique compared to other vetivers, like Guerlain. I love the earthy aspect a lot and even though is very masculine and strong, it reminds me of relaxing and happy moments by the ocean.

My mother is coming to stay so I need a reminder to be angelic as I watch her collect and squeeze out the tea bags for a second and third cup of re-heated in the microwave milky tea. I’ve hidden 3/4 of my perfumes…just enough not to arouse suspicion and got a stack of World of Interiors ( from the library, of course) and plan to take her thrift shopping after collecting her from town. Tomorrow we are heading off to the Mountain Film and Book festival in Wanaka …about four hours inland, in a beautiful part of the country….where i am giving some talks. She has just confessed to enrolling in a writing workshop I am taking so I will have to be on my toes as she will want to argue every point…man, she is a dag! I really need Angel Extreme!

I love today’s Pantone color; peaches and corals are my colors-of-the-summer; they look great with sun-kissed skin. SOTD is YSL Paris Roses des Bois. I’m not a fan of the original Paris but I am fond of the LE printemps series, especially the Roses des Bois. Wild pink roses and blackberry bramble on a walk through the woods. Mmmmmm . . .

Those Paris Printemps LEs are nice, aren’t they?

Off to a slow start this morning because I’m recovering from a cold, so an even later comment than usual from this part of the world! My sense of smell has returned, but still a little dull, so I’m thinking Mitsouko, something substantial that I’ll really be able to appreciate.

Get better. It seems to be a bad winter for colds and flu.

Love the Pantone colors theme. LOVE that color. My SOTD = Marion Nous, another old fashioned soapy floral with lots of orange blossom and other things. I like this, but I think I like the Chant d’Aromes I wore yesterday better. Now I need to find my Granada sample for tomorrow….

    Late again…

SOTD = Chanel No. 19 EDP

Too busy at work preparing to go on vacation starting mid-week next week.

In other news, there had been several recent cases of — cat hoarding! “My roommate snuck in cats one at a time and I never noticed it.” In this cat hoarder’s home, there were over 50 cats, some of them dead, with bodily excretions all over the place and some of the cats lived inside the walls. the next time someone criticizes you for havig too many bottles of perfume, you can say, at least I am not a cat hoarder – let me tell you about THAT!

Late lady here, but it’s been one hell of a hump day. I knew it would be, hence Poivre Piquant.
