Thursday scent of the day 5/26

Posted by Robin on 26 May 2016 317 Comments

SS 2016 Calvin Klein Collection men's campaign

Happy Almost-Friday! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm in CK One, developed by Alberto Morillas (along with Harry Fremont).

Reminder: on 5/27, wear a fragrance by Alberto Morillas, if you have one.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wow, potentially Top 10 SOTD comment today.

It’s summer in the Big City! Wah, I want Fall weather.

SOTD = Atelier Cologne Sous le Toit de Paris

It is so refreshibg on this warm day. I may have to ger a back-up as my 200 mL bottle (from which I’ve split out 150 mLs ) is now running low.

You smell great! I love Sous le Toit, had to get 200mls all to myself. :-). I am pretending it’s fall since we have a nice breeze this morning.

Because it is only available in the boutiques and online, it doesn’t get the mainstream exposure. I’m planning to go to Twisted Lily tomorrow and may pop into the boutique across the street. (Plus, I have a gift card I have to use by March 2017 and time flies!

Omnia Crystalline for me from a little travel atomizer. I am surprised how often I wear this, but I think that has more to do with the travel atomizer being handy. It is nice, but I have many things in the office friendly category I like better.

I am drinking some iced peppermint tea while they work on the office air con.

I’m wearing Regime des Fleurs Nymphaea Caerulea that – according to the information provided – includes lotus/waterlily, white ambergris and salty water notes (plus about 80 others). I really liked the beginning that smelled true to the description, but rich and complex. Then it turned quite aquatic, thinner and less interesting in the middle and now the dry-down is more complex again. But it’s so close to the skin that I feel I’m not getting the entire story – I only have a dabber sample and it’s also (mostly?) natural. I just don’t smell enough to make any definitive pronouncements, but the line is certainly interesting.

Aaah, the one I had the most interest in! I generally enjoy aquatics, and soft sillage is a bonus in my office. Hopefully Lucky Scent will have samples of NC again soon, but for $425 for 8ml, I would really need to try out a spray sample. Maybe TPC or StC will start to carry?

Thank you for your review, looking forward to reading about the others!

The price is terrifying, even Donatella would do a double take 🙂

But who knows, if it’s true love, then it will go on the FB list and maybe one day come to fruition as a gift, 10-year anniversary, maybe?

Yes, that’s my thinking as well. Five years ago, spending 150 or 200 euros on a perfume also seemed completely unlikely, but I’ve done it several times now. Plus, sometimes it’s just interesting to smell things, even if I may not be able to buy them.

Wearing Chamade today. I’m not sure which version as it is from a small decant that doesn’t say. Can Chamade lovers here (Ann?) advise on what strength (EdT, EdP, Extr) they love most? The extrait is beyond budget now, but that may change one day. Victoria of BdJ is positive about the current versions, I think that is the one in the (on the pics) somewhat ugly cannister with holes.
I also thought of a Friday project, wear the scent that is currently your favourite (all time or this season), but maybe this has been done before.

I have the somewhat ugly canister with holes in the edt. I love it.
I didn’t even know there was an EDP, although now I see it on Fragrantica. Victoria of BdJ doesn’t mention EDP, only vintage and current, extrait and edt.
I’m happy with eau de toilette.

The extrait is gorgeous! I only had one of those tiny 2ml microminis of it, but I enjoyed every drop. I have a weird 1970s bottle with EdT and it’s lovely once the first wonky five minutes go by. I have two decants of 1980s parfum de toilette and that’s gorgeous too, slightly more powdery than the other iterations I’ve tried. Chamade seems wonderful in whatever concentration.

I pretty much think that Chamade is nearly the same in all the versions that I have smelled and used. But I’ve not smelled what is very currently for sale so I can’t comment about that. I have vintage PDT, and year 2000-ish edt (from the refill of the weird canister bottle) and year 2000-ish extrait. The extrait is just a tad bit more rose, but all the different versions I have pretty much smell the same and have nearly similar lasting powers. Chamade really wants to stick around! Which is good b/c it is so wonderful. Chamade is one of my HG fragrances for a good reason!

Oh wow! I know it’s probably considered a difficult fragrance, but I didnt realise just how difficult. Well, actually, that’s probably not true. I remember the first time I tried it I was horrified at the urinous smell on my arm, but after several months actually started craving it.

I love APLS, and would definitely buy a bottle if he offered it in a smaller size, but as it is its just too expensive. I’ll bet he’d sell a lot more if it was available in the travel sprays like some of his other scents.

It sure does! It’s an exact replica of the big bottle. I admire Flower more than I actually like it: it’s an ingenious scent but the powder really is too much.

The other day, I temporarily changed my awful blond highlights to pink, so of course, I needed something to match. Gourmand Coquin today, as I audition it for a slot on my FB list. Unfortunately, as much as I like it (and I really do!), I’m not convinced I need 2.5 oz of it. It’s delicious and joyful, but I’m not sure how much wear it will realistically get.

Gourmand Coquin was my favourite of the three original Elixirs Charnels, but there is no way (to me) it’s worth the asking price, not when there are so many similar vanilla-heavy scents out there for so much less money. You could buy 100-mL bottles of Amour de Cacao, Vanille Extreme, AND Vanille Abricot for less, and have four times as much. Heck, you could buy the set of the five Maison de la Vanille scents from Luckyscent and then purchase any three full bottles for less.

I hope you have pink highlights at the next meet up. I would love to see them- I bet they are fantastic.
So many Guerlains are great to wear but hard to own because of $$. Interestingly, the Saks SA said there are clients who buy several bottles of the same fragrance each year for themselves. It’s the polar opposite of the NST community.

Yikes, I can’t even imagine spending $250 multiple times in a single shopping trip. (Nor can I imagine actually needing multiple bottles that size.)

Of course, I was at The Perfume House last year and a man there bought 3 or 4 perfumes after smelling just about every rose scent they had. He said it was cheaper than where he was from. I tip my imaginary hat to him!

I’m growing out the blond and planning to replace them with brown highlights that are slightly lighter than my natural color (boring 🙂 ). But in the meantime, since blond makes such a good canvas, I figured I’d try out something fun. Maybe if I can find a good electric blue, I’ll give that a shot before the blond is all gone.

That sounds so cute, I admire your sense of adventure.

Do you think those people buying multiple bottles are finding a way either to resell at a higher price elsewhere, or take the cost as a (questionable) tax deduction as work attire or something?

Senses of adventure are greatly enhanced when you have nothing to lose. Funny thing is that I don’t think a single person has noticed my pink hair, which leads me to believe that we can all get away with being more daring than we think.

I don’t know if this particular guy had any ulterior motives–he seemed so enthusiastic about the scents, it’s hard for me to believe he was in it for anything other than joy. But then again, I guess if he figured out a way to game the system, that’s one way to reduce the financial burden of a multi-bottle shopping trip.

Hi Lovestosmellgood…! the body oil is not a heavy oil, and seems to sink right into my skin. I don’t find it to be super moisturizing, but my skin is also not dry so maybe with dryer skin it is more obvious that it is moisturizing well. I’m glad that it’s not an oil slick.
The smell fades within an hour but it’s still there if you put your nose to your skin.

SOTD is Grace by Grace Coddington. It’s really pleasing for this warm weather. I smell soft rose and peach with very muted musk at the base. I’m impressed with the longevity. I don’t think it’s a must have if you have other easy to wear rose fragrances. However, bottle and the pouch with cat drawings are appealing for feline fanatics! I will confess that I blind ordered it from Aedes because I love Grace Coddington’s style and her untamed mass of red hair 🙂
This was my first order from Aedes and they were amazingly generous with a wonderful variety of samples.

I’ve been travelling and therefore am limited to samples and a couple of travel sprays. JM Velvet Rose and Oud has been the most used. Oddly, today it’s been quite oudy. Not sure whether I will end up buying it, but as I am in England at the moment perhaps the price is a little less painful…

Oh look, it’s almost noon and I’m just now actually getting to do work! UGHHH.
After all the interruptions this week the internet in our office decided: nope, screw you! So 3+ hours of my day have been entirely wasted again. The universe is seriously conspiring against me getting anything done.

Luckily, I am home now (yay!) with consistent internet and ZERO annoying coworkers (yay!) stopping me. So, time to buckle down now and FINALLY get to my reports!

It’s also disgustingly hot and humid out so I’m doused in Cristalle.

Hello. I should be asleep, but I’m not, and now I’m directly disobeying the instructions of my new (bossy, young) doctor who told me On No Account to use electronic devices if I’m awake at night. I’ve tried thinking about nice things and concentrating on my breathing and all that jazz, and it’s all a beastly botheration, so here I am NST, drinking tea, thinking how gorgeous you all smell and wishing my feet were warmer. No SOTD yet for the cold Friday that’s about to dawn, but I can just catch trace of Donna Karan Iris, which I wore to bed. It’s still pretty, very wearable, but unremarkable. I think I might wear Fate today, just ‘cos I want something golden to counter the greyness of the weather. I’ll do the project tomorrow. Yawning…might doze. G’night, all.

I like to listen to the BBC world news on my radio when I can’t sleep. I turn the volume to just that I can barely hear it. All those Brits chatting and occasionally shouting away lulls me to sleep when I can’t really hear what they are saying.

I listen to BBC documentaries on my Ipad. I turn the screen away from my face so the light doesn’t disturb me. Those monotone voices usually do the trick.

I think your doctor may be right, the lights from screens tends to keep me awake and there have been several studies that suggest it is because the light tricks your brain into thinking it is day and you should be active.

My brother downloaded f.lux and said it eases his transition from computer screen to sleep.

      Sweet dreams!

My doctor said the light was not a problem if you are able to fall asleep. She said waking up later was not from the blue light. So she said to consolidate the sleep cycles by getting really tired and staying up until 1 am, hoping to train my body to sleep well for 5 hours. Well, after a few days of that, I was absolutely ill and not sleeping better. I found the best therapy is vigorous exercise. Unfortunately, rearranging perfume samples is not sufficient!

You’re all so kind! I dozed a bit, which is better than I often do. Thanks for the tip about the BBC. I’ve not found my way to them, but I should. When I’m awake for hours, which I often am, I watch a lot of kapa haka, and catch up with John Clarke and Brian Hawes, read all sorts, do the ironing, sometimes mark assignments, and generally try not to feel anxious about being awake when I know I need sleep..Lately, though, I’ve found it impossible to relax and accept that I’m awake, and I’m getting splitting headaches almost daily. I get cross with myself, with noisy people, with loud car stereos, with the whole sleeping world, actually, and I seem to be dangerously tired all the time. I’m going to go back to see this child with two medical degrees –honestly, I swear he doesn’t need to shave yet!– and ask for a magic pill. Well, three magic pills, actually. Someone at work told me that the trick is to break the pattern of sleeplessness three nights in a row, so, three sleeping tablets.

I occasionally use an herbal sleep aid, around the time the light changes, and I think the 3-night idea is on target.

Recently I devised a project I want to work on in the next 6-12 months, that I’m pretty excited about. It seems that if I think of that at night, it generates some kind of happy hormones that cause me to fall asleep quite quickly. Make a plan for some perversely joyous future project and see if it works….

I made it, but it’s really easy! I based it on a ginger beer I tried at True Food when we had our meetup at Arielle Shoshana.
Sparkling Water (I like lime) with chai masala spice powder, plus ginger juice, lime juice, extra cardamom powder and stevia. It would probably work well with coconut water if you’re a fan of that. I just happen to enjoy the fun of bubbles! Trader Joe’s ginger beer is actually really great, but I’m trying to avoid sugar. I drink this with a straw since the powder tends to settle at the bottom. Let me know if you attempt it…

Morillas #4 has been Eau d’Italie’s “Au Lac”. Sadly whatever charm this exhibits as a spray disappears as soon as it hits the skin. Or to put it briefly: “Au Lac? No Lac!”.

Off to see some of Paris now. After a week of late evenings and nights prepping for a big client meeting, we’ve held it and we’ve survived to fight another week. I am now in Chanel No. 19, using a last 0.5ml of an old decant, which I expect will comfortably outlast the 1.6ml Au Lac sample.

Surprisingly, the water-logged lilacs are hanging on to their scented blooms after last night’s storms, and their fragrance in today’s very humid air is enhanced by the heavy white blossoms of the honey-locust trees in my neighborhood, which have just begun to bloom. My SOTD is Annie Oakley Morning Dew. The box says, ” As breathtaking as sunrise at a country cottage, as pure as lilacs drenched in raindrops,” and the website lists the notes as lilac, LOTV, grape and balsam. Not sure about the grape and balsam, but the lilac is lovely and seems to be joined by sweet honeysuckle, not LOTV, which closely resemble the fragrant honey-locust blossoms here. It’s pretty and sweet, not too demanding yet with a nice depth and perfectly suits the day. Annie Oakley is an interesting family-run perfumery worth visiting if you’re ever traveling through the Indiana Amish country.

Yes, those are very nice and, if you have a horse, there are even horse-training aids. The tour is worthwhile and you learn the history of the business. Early on, as a young single mom, she started crafting (I believe) jewelry that she used to sell at Western-related events. She started experimenting with fragrance and created her first, Annie, and named that and her new perfume company, Annie Oakley. She remarried and her husband and family all became involved in her business, which is tucked very modestly into the Indiana countryside.

Don’t apologize, perhaps salty sea notes just don’t work in the Arizona desert (I think that’s where you are?). I happen to love Eau des Merveilles but I don’t like some fragrances that most NST’ers love (here’s looking at you, Chanel No. 5, in any iteration). I don’t really know why, I just don’t like it, period, and don’t feel I need to in order to be a ‘perfumista.’ Your only fragrance ‘duty’ is to enjoy the scent you wear, no further explanation needed!

Ha, yes, maybe desert babies like me are allergic to the sea! I’m OK with not ultimately liking EdM. I was just surprised that it went from good to bad and then disappointed I couldn’t get a more empirical analysis of my dislike. (I’m with you in the ‘no’ camp on No. 5. Tho, I mostly like it but just can’t love the aldehyde overdose after a while.)
PS: How was your baseball game yesterday? We just got swept. Man, if the Pirates keep pitching at batters’ heads, some other team is going to decide enough is enough, and s–t’s going to get real for them. It won’t be pretty.

It’s not summery here at all but cloudy and cool. I’m staying with cozy scents until it warms up. Today I’m wearing Ambre Precieux, not a Morillas, but tomorrow will be one of my desert island scents which he created. When it was discontinued I bought a bunch so now I have enough to last a good long while.

So yesterday I wore Poison Girl. I then went into town and layered Dior Homme and Agent Provocateur L’agent ( as one does ) then …this is where it gets weird…I tried on a fake leopard skin coat…and then I realised that the sales assistant was wearing Poison Girl. The thing is, I thought PG smelled ok on me but terrible on her and in my dystopian perfume confusion I accidently bought the coat, thinking I looked like Kate Moss.
Does anyone remember Bet Lynch from Coronation St? Say no more.

And this happened in your waking life? That’s fantastic! And I’m sure the leopard coat and PG combo is fabulous in you.

Kanuka, I can’t offer an opinion about the Kate Moss thing, but I’m sure of this: you would never look like Bet Lynch, not even if you and a team of stylists worked at it with both hands for a week! I bet you look utterly gorgeous. And warm. Warm is good, I think, as my thin northern blood struggles to adjust to mornings at 12 and highs of 18….

This is one great story, I’m sorry Kanuka, but it made me laugh out loud. It is such a random chain of events.
I’ve never even had the courage to try a leopard coat, let alone buy one.

Oh gosh, I’d love to go shopping with you. This sounds like a hoot!
I recently found myself inexplicably drawn to an animal print purse on eBay until I had the thought that I would probably resemble Peg Bundy and not Audrey Hepburn. However, I’m not sure I care;) Your coat sounds fantastic!

Seriously, I have this weird brain thing that I have never read about in a magazine…in my head I look like Debra Harry circa Heart of Glass (not having a mirror at home helps), and even when I’m looking at my 5’4″ , 150lb/ 70kg reflection (which I somehow imagine is all muscle) I still don’t see myself. Is that like visual anosmia? I definitely have visual anosmia….except sometimes. And that’s a shame, cause then I’m like whoaaaahhhhhhh, what???!!!!

I’m wearing Oryza Le Grand (sp?) Vetiver Royal Bourbon. It’s pretty obviously masculine but I kinda like it. At first I felt like it smelled like something my dad would wear, but it’s growing on me. The minty aspects of it could be kind of cooling in the summer, without smelling like toothpaste.

I’m also drinking a cup of Kusmi Anastasia and being frustrated with a project at work.

    SOTD L’Ombre Dans L’eau.
It seems like so long since I last commented, but in reality it’s been no more than a couple weeks. I’ve had a truly awful few weeks. My step mum died, her funeral was on my birthday earlier in the week, so now I am going to have my birthday on Saturday instead, and I am going to wear vintage Yvresse and do something lovely with my family.
I’m really feeling better than I have in ages today, the sun has been shining, my kids are happy and healthy, I have wonderful friends, a supportive and kind husband, really a lot to be grateful for.
I had such a fun day out on Saturday with the lovely SophieC, such fun to be able to share this eccentric and multi faceted hobby with a like minded soul, it was really just what I needed to take my mind off all the horrible and sad stuff.

I’m also so happy to be part of this lovely and interesting community. You’re all such a great bunch.

Now that I did Morillas and Kenzo flower died on me, I proceeded to spray myself with Bond-T from Sammarco….yum! I swear it smells like a box of yummiest tobacco, at least from some distance. With nose to skin, it smells like dried plants on the seashore I was taken to as a kid.
