Every spring, I reach for my favorite violet perfumes. At this point in my perfume-history, they include Guerlain Après L’Ondée, Annick Goutal La Violette, Atkinsons 1799 Love in Idleness and Balenciaga Paris. I've alway had a weakness for Lush's violet-scented bath and products, too — my very first review here at Now Smell This was a look at Lush's Bathos Bubble Bar — so I couldn't resist a quick in-store spritz of their new Sunny Day Anti-Static Hair Detangler.
According to the Lush UK website, Sunny Day's name is a reference to the Sesame Street theme song: "Sunny day / sweeping the clouds away / on my way to where the air is sweet." Coincidentally (or not?), it has a weather tie-in to Don't Rain on My Parade Shower Gel, and if you liked Don't Rain on My Parade, you're in for a treat, because Sunny Day's fragrance is very similar. It's a mix of a candied violets, dewy violet blooms, and woody-green violet leaf, with some heady ylang ylang peeking out from beneath. It's less "feminine" than you might expect, and it's quite concentrated. Sunny Day really should be labeled as a perfumed hair detangler. If you love violet and violet leaf, you'll be in heaven; if not, you might be put off by cheerful strength of Sunny Day.
A word about this product's function: although Sunny Day is billed as an "anti-static" treatment, it's also described as a frizz-fighting spray. I don't have trouble with static or tangles, but my wavy-curly hair does need help in warding off frizz. I was so impressed by the way this product made my hair feel when I tried it at Lush on a rainy day that I ended up taking home a bottle. Now Sunny Day is part of my morning regimen: a dose of several spritzes, applied after my usual styling cream or mousse, creates a lightweight protective layer for my hair. Even without silicones (yay!), Sunny Day keeps my moody tresses feeling smoother (and definitely more scented) than usual.
(Even if you're not looking for a hair product, but you love violet and violet leaf, you should check out Don't Rain on my Parade. Really. I'm so scared that it won't sell well enough and it will end up discontinued that I'm taking every possible chance to recommend it.)
Happy Spring and many sunny days ahead!
Lush Sunny Day Anti-Static Hair Detangler is available in a 100g spray bottle ($19.95) at LUSH stores and the LUSH website.

Thank you for the heads up, Jessica! I love violets in perfume, vintage Jolie Madame being my favorite, and I practically only use Lush products on my fine and weak hair, so I’m definitely going to try (and probably buy) this. How does it perform in the detangling department?
It has ingredients like honey and polyquaternium that add/retain moisture and smoothness — which is all good for fighting tangles, I’d guess! (I don’t actually get them that often, for some reason…)
If you like the leafy and woody sides of your violet perfumes, you’ll probably like the smell of this product! Do you use LUSH’s Daddy-O shampoo? It has a pretty intense violet scent…
Gah! Yes, I do love the scent of Don’t Rain on My Parade shower gel and it sucks they don’t sell the larger 16 oz size in that fragrance.
I just put two Sunny Days in my cart but picked up several other things and now the total is way over what I expected to log out with! LOL
Why is it us perfumistas are such suckers for scented everythanng?!
Well, at least this one is. ????????????????
The Happy Happy Joy Joy conditioner is another Lush hair product that I really enjoy using *just* for the beautiful aroma it leaves in my hair. lol ????
I hope you have lovely weekend,Jessica and thanks for the review!
Happy Happy Joy Joy conditioner and Love and Light hand cream both have that amazing natural neroli fragrance! I *love* it, too. Sorry to cause you shopping-cart distress, hah. I know how that can happen…
The same thing happened to me (note passive construction — clearly I had no hand in the minor spending spree that went down!) 🙂
I think this is supposed to have the same scent as the Kerbside Violet perfume. I have the solid version and it is lovely. I like to wear it on mornings when it has rained night before.
Hi! I find Kerbside Violet a little lighter and greener, and this one heavier on the woody violet leaf note — but I do like them both!
You so had me at “violet” “curly hair” & “frizz-control” that I had to run out on my lunch break to check it out. Alas, violet leaf I personally can’t abide as my nose interprets it as gas-station toilet for some reason. An unfortunate no-go for me. Too bad, I really felt like some retail therapy today!
Aw! Yep, the violet leaf and rosewood are pretty prominent. Sorry this one didn’t work out for you! but I hope you’ll find something else to love at LUSH soon.
This sounds pretty great. I have slightly-wavy hair that’s both thick and fine, so it tangles easily. Usually I resort to silicones and braids to keep it in check. Perhaps I should give Sunny Day a try. Also: violets!
Oh, do give it a try next time you’re near a store. I loved the smell, and I”m glad I sampled it in-store — it really does tame my hair without making it flat or sticky. The humid weather is on its way to NYC, after all…!
Must go and check this out immediately! Thank you for bringing it to my attention. My local Lush stores didn’t get Don’t Rain on My Parade (soooo disappointed), but hopefully they’ll have this. Very excited.
Oh, I hope you’ll be able to try it! They have lots of new hair products coming out…my store has some, but not all (yet).
Thanks for the hot tip! I love Don’t Rain on My Parade and Daddy-O.
If you love those, you’ll love the smell of this!! When LUSH does violet, they really do VIOLET.
My take-away message from this is that, while my straight, fine hair does NOT need a detangler (or more moisture at all), I really, really need a LUSH nearby so I can go sniff all these things! (Closest one, far as I can tell, is about 3.5 hours’ drive. Sigh.)
I wish I could magically place a LUSH closer to your home. It really is a wonderful place for scent-lovers to sniff and browse. 🙁
