Hump Day! And May the Fourth be with you. What fragrance are you wearing?
I'm in Serge Lutens L'Eau de Paille. Review coming up later this week or early next week.
Reminder: on 5/6, wear a fragrance from Tom Ford, if you have one.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2016, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

After yesterday’s rain it’s quite chilly here, so I have doused myself in vintage Jolie Madame extrait. I always “see” it in shades of chestnut brown, mossy green and violet.
Spent most of yesterday thinking about Parfumerie Generale and how little it engages the fume blogosphere these days. I like the house, I think its fragrances are solid and well-done, and yet I don’t feel a pull to own a single one. Maybe a lot of people feel like that? TBH, I have yet to try any of the Huitieme Art collection.
I think they have done some really great scents but the line is way too big. My favourite is Felanilla, and I also really like Cozé.
That could be it. Felanilla and Iris Taizo might be the most interesting to me, but I somehow feel that the scents often remind me of other fragrances.
I love Coze. I wish I had a full bottle. But I don’t!
vtg BJM ~ gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!
as for PG ~ I really enjoy and would re-purchase if I finish my bottles of L’Ombre Fauve and Louanges Profanes. Maybe Tubereuse Couture, but maybe not.
Oh, gosh, it really is gorgeous. JM, I mean. I’ve been hoarding mini bottles, but I really should just wear them.
I agree with Austenfan — I think they have not done a good enough job of “editing” the collection. It’s too big, and too many of the newer releases were less interesting than the earlier releases. Too little freedom hampers many mainstream brands, but I sometimes think too much freedom is just as bad.
And for anyone who missed Mals’ piece:
http://themuseinwoodenshoes.com/parfumerie-generale/
Such a helpful piece! How does everyone keep up with all the perfume reading in addition to all of the other books, journals, etc. and write as well?!
I think you’re both right, there are too many variations-on-a-theme in the line. And I don’t think the florals (my favorites, of course) are particularly distinctive – why should I buy Tubereuse Couture, for example, instead of Flowerhead?
(Thanks for link, too.)
It’s probably not quite the line for me anyway, but also as others say, the number of scents is overwhelming and that puts me off. I have to really, really like the brand to go through so many fragrances (Lutens is one example I can think of) and the ones I’ve tried from PG have not been motivating enough. I don’t want to get all marketing-y here, but while I get a clear sense from Parfums de Nicolai or Parfum d’Emipre about what kind of brands they want to be, I do not get the same clarity from PG.
And Lutens took a lot longer to create that line!
That’s an interesting point about brand identity. I suppose I’ve always thought of PG as being “whatever Pierre Guillaume wants to do,” which might be far too loose for coherence.
It’s probably the perfect premise for people who know and love Guillaume’s work, but how many people like that are there? I’m in fact a huge fan of this ‘I’m going to create whatever the hell I like’ approach, but I think it makes editing even more important – you need to deliver something pretty good if you want people to follow you for the vision alone.
I have several that I bought when they first came out and I was just getting into niche perfumery but I rarely reach for them now as they are not compelling or long-lasting compared to others in my collection. And I agree there are too many.
Maybe it’s just the ones I’ve tried, but my problem with a lot of the PGs is that they are so gourmandy. It’s not my thing as gourmands can actually making me nauseous, no matter how high end and well-done. I own and love Isparta, but it’s chewy too and I have to be in the mood for it. It helps that it doesn’t last super long, but of course that would be a negative for others.
Oh and I now see reading Malabou great column that I am not the only one who gets food, food, and more food!
Sorry Mals! Spell check went to Catherine Malabou, a philosopher whose name I guess I’ve typed often enough for it the default. Who knew?
That’s funny! I’m not familiar with Malabou, perhaps I should remedy that.
I like the line a lot. I have a couple of full bottles and some decants. I would say Indochine and Felanilla are my faves but there are many I haven’t tried, and probably never will. I don’t have a problem with lasting time and if money were no object, I’m sure I would own additional FB’s, but then I’m a sucker for a good gourmand. It is a huge selection to wade through, but that can be said about many lines today.
Have you tried Harmatan Noir? I thought of you when I sampled it. Vetiver+salt+tea. Good for The Swamp, perhaps.
I have not tried it- thanks for the recommendation, I’m planning a small decant order with the focus being salt….I’ve been curious about MH fleur de sel, Montale Sandflowers, and I will add you suggestion to my list ????
Neither Indochine nor Felanilla are shrinking violets. They both have excellent longevity. I also really like Coze. Isparta Is pretty but fleeting. I own Indochine but would probably be happy with decants of the others I’ve mentioned. I agree that it’s a huge house and have only sampled a small portion of it.
You smell lovely today Mals!
Continuing my Hedione theme, Christian Dior Eau Sauvage.
Kanuka, I’m so happy to have inspired you. That warms my perfumed heart. Kouros is brave and beautiful. Rock On !! 😉
Of course you smell fantastic.
Love that scent.
That was my dad’s scent and i used to wear it after he died when I needed moral support
I’m wearing Satin Doll from Ys Uzac, I love it even though I don’t know how to describe it. Tea is an Earl Grey Darjeeling.
Satin Doll is very nice – I remember it as being a modern floral chypre with iris.
It is, with a hint of tuberose hidden behind the veils
This sounds intriguing – there is a boutique in Tallinn that carries the line, I should try it next time I’m there.
I actually think that you would like it a lot. It’s really, really nice.
Today I’m wearing the last of Florist’s Fridge and trying to decide if I want to take advantage of Smell Bent’s 20% off Mother’s Day sale.
OOH! I used the last of my Florist’s Fridge mini recently and was thinking of replacing it. Guess I shall.
Several of us tried Florist’s Fridge at the meet up at Ari’s and thought it had a plastic smell of the inside of the fridge. What is it that we were missing?
I guess that’s intentional?
Yes, except the flowers were still supposed to be inside.
Funny, I just bought a 4ml sample of FF based on Mal’s recommendation but I do not get plastic at all.
Saw the 20% off sale at Smell Bent mentioned here and bought the Frankensmellie sample pack. Includes Florist’s Fridge, which I’ve been really curious to try. My first teenage job was at a florist with a greenhouse (which I thought would be glamorous—um, not!!!), and I loved stepping inside the walk-in cooler filled with flowers. That smell is still one of my all-time favorites–just luscious!
Some other interesting things also in the set , such as The Yard Next Door. Anyone try that one?
Envy for Men today–which smells a bit like drinking citrus and ginger soda with some incense and flowers on the table next to you. Sadly discontinued, but I remember Tom Ford for Men being very similar. I should try them together.
I am drinkings cup of pour over coffee. The beans are Guatemala Proyecto Xinabajul that I roasted myself (new hobby!) to a Full City roast.
Your description of Envy for Men is great.
Your coffee is yummy, and you smell really good.
Self-roasting your beans sounds intriguing. Does it require a lot of expensive gadgetry?
A bit of Eau de Gaga this morning, waiting for more substantial perfume to arrive later today. 🙂
And we are waiting to hear what that might be!
Bel Ami (Hermes) and Lyric Man (Amouage). I instantly applied the Hermes, and the Lyric was sprayed onto a tissue. It is very fragrant in my office today! 🙂
Nice!
Very nice indeed! I’ll bet you have the best smelling office in your building 🙂
Sampling Lubin Black Jade which is a bit spicier than I was anticipating
I thought it was pretty when I sampled it recently – but there’s just no way that it’s a faithful recreation of a late 18th century scent, despite the PR hype. Nice, though.
The backstory seems a bit far fetched but aren’t many of them? I really love Black Jade despite the hype that surrounds it. It’s a really nice scent.
It IS nice. It’s very pretty. It did strike me as being very modern, though, so I roll my eyes a lot at the “Marie Antoinette’s fragrance” thing.
I agree Mals. It’s almost too bad that Lubin introduced that backstory. I think that super high expectations hurt the success of Black Jade more than it helped.
I have that sample. It’s spicy and very lovely- but not really what a 18th century Queen with a liking for English style fragrances would wear…
Happy Hump Day Everyone! I am continuing my week of wearing Tom Ford fragrances. My SOTD is Black Orchid (given to me by a gracious and generous NST’er). Such a beautiful, yet powerful fragrance. A little bit goes a long way! Believe me, this is coming from a person who is extremely “heavy-handed” when putting on fragrance. I would say that this is either a fall / winter fragrance because of the boozy, sultry scent. So, since it is in the 50’s this morning in Houston, I deemed it appropriate for today. Hope everyone has a great day! 🙂
It really is quite strong. I had a colleague who wore it and I could smell her from meters away. Not that I minded, I’m not sensitive and would rather deal with an occasional over-applier than a scent-free environment.
I really like that one and you smell great – sometimes I think the body lotion is the easier way to wear it (at least during the day).
Works so wall as a shower gel, too! Although not as an alternative to perfume.
You smell great! I always feel that I should wear Black Orchid for an occasion…maybe, on Friday I’ll apply it sparingly 🙂
Gets my vote for loudest perfume in existence, but I do think it’s lovely AND interesting.
Hi everyone! I’ve been silent for awhile. It’s nice to rejoin the perfume world after almost two months off. (Though I did lurk a bit.). I feel like I’ve fallen off the edge of the earth.
SOTD is Diorissimo. I’ve been in it since May Day. I went through a period over the last two years where all I could smell was jasmine so I put it away for awhile. Now I mostly detect Muguet and it’s heavenly! I can smell it for about six hours too. My nose is up to some funny business but I’m happy about it. 🙂
Happy hump day!
Glad to see you back, and glad you’re digging your Diorissimo!
Smelling beautiful!
Ahhh… Maybe I’ll join you. Diorissimo on me is straight up Muguet until late in dry down. You are Spring…
Welcome back, and of course you smell great!
*waves hello* and you smell lovely!
Lovely! And nice to see you!
sotd: Profumi del Forte Roma Imperiale (it’s top favorites week for me, not sampling anything new, just wearing my faves…so far Alahine, Jolie Madame and today Roma Imperiale)
You smell great! Petunia was kind enough to send me a sample. I like it a lot.
Yum!
Trying Philosykos EDT today. I hope to be able to smell it soon, but just after I put it on the cat knocked over and broke a bottle of balsamic vinegar so that’s what’s waking me up today. I must say, it’s rather effective.
Lol! Oh, kitties.
She didn’t seem even slightly remorseful. But, I suppose cats aren’t salad eaters.
She was crying on the inside where you couldn’t see. XD
Haha! My cat recently knocked over a bottle of fish sauce and he wasn’t sorry at all! Luckily, it didn’t break and only a third of the bottle spilled 😉
Did he lap it up?
Oh boy. I’ll bet you’ll be smelling that for days to come. My cats knocked over and broke a jar of natural peanut butter. There were PB paw prints all over the place. Equal parts cute and infuriating.
Peanut butter nauseates me, but that’s really an adorable image. She didn’t actually break the bottle, just the top, so that damage wasn’t what it might have been.
SOTD the beautiful SL Boxeuses ( to me, anyway)
Earlier this week my sister went for closing on a house we didn’t know we inherited!
I went to bed with pictures of bell jars oops, I mean extra retirements money, oops, face lift, oooooops, savings, in my head. ????
What a great discovery on the house and giggle re your response!
Happy for you, apsara.
“Do. Or do not. There is no try.”
Anyway, wearing Safran Troublant, thanks to Hamamelis. I like it – it’s not difficult to like, is it?
On a related note: I’ve just seen the new L’Artisan bottles in person and think they look good. More (traditionally) masculine than they used to, but that’s perfectly fine with me. I think the prices have gone up, but at least there are 50ml versions of all scents, something I really appreciate.
Right!
Hah! Yoda was completely wrong about perfumes, wasn’t he?! “Always try” is my motto. 🙂
LOL!
🙂 Indeed. Not the best perfume role model. I should have gone with “Hard to see the dark side is” or something.
I like this – certainly can be hard to see the dark side with some of the supposedly noir recent releases but I digress…
That’s definitely one of the best Yoda quotes!
I just saw them today! They feel great–more solid and weighty than the old bottles–but they look so oddly somber for so many cheerful scents.
Once again, it is raining and a bit cool. Once again, I am feeling really down. So once again, it is Eau Parfumee Au The Vert to the rescue with its warm spiciness.
Aww – Missionista, I’m so sorry to hear this. Hope that the The Vert is helping.
I’m sure this weather doesn’t help. Hope your spirits lift soon!
This weather is down right depressing. I’m trying to push through as well.. if we could just get another 10 degrees and blue skies!!
I hope your spirits lift as the day goes on. We do need some sun….
I don’t know where you are, missionista, but It’s been chilly and rainy all over the East, I think, for weeks. I’m really weather sensitive, and I am so looking forward to the warm weekend we’re supposed to have (at least in western NY). I hope something will happen in your neck of the woods, too, that brightens your outlook.
I’m sending sunshine and warmth (along with a whole lotta humidity!) your way ????☀️
I hope the weather gets more cheerful in your neck of the woods very soon.
I’m glad that Au The Vert is doing its job!
I’ve got sun and warmth to spare, so am happy to share. Feel better soon!
SOTD is Dior Homme. So peaceful and soothing.
Lovely.
Bijou Romantique today.
I was trying to think of a vanilla that wasn’t too sweet, but also wasn’t dark or smokey (maybe it’s the weather, but I’ve gotten tired of dark/smokey vanillas). I couldn’t really think of anything other than Bijou, but they have to be out there, right?
Nobile 1942s La Danza delle Libellule begins with an sheer Apple/fruity note and finishes with a vanilla reminiscent of Tihota but more sheer. Very pretty but not a heavy or smokey vanilla.
Guerlain Muguet 2016
Ooh I am really intrigued by this, how do you find it?
I tried it over the weekend and it was softer than the previous Muguet editions.
WFH today so can wear whatever my heart desires. I decided on Byredo Pulp. Love it, but I have to be careful to not spray too much as a little of this goes a long way.
You smell great. And yes, it is quite powerful. But I personally love it when J sprays this heavily and I can smell him from another floor 🙂
Yes it does. I love fragrances that are bold like Pulp. Glad you are enjoying it. Its a gem.☺
Today I am wearing TF “Tuscan Leather”, which is well made and has decent lasting power. But the thing is, the more leather scents I try, the closer I get to throwing up my hands and admitting defeat. I think I just don’t greatly care for leather as a note. I have a bunch of leather samples yet to try, so no final decision today, but Tuscan Leather is a “no” for me.
That’s too bad. Leather, and Tuscan Leather are favourites of mine.
Harrods may carry Caron extraits, and Tabac Blond really is a must try. 🙂
Ohhh, Tabac Blond – so beautiful in extrait.
I’m kind of a leather wimp, but when it’s right for me, it’s right. (Tuscan Leather, Cuir de Lancome, Jolie Madame all big yesses in my book.)
You know what? You don’t have to love any particular note. I think it’s good to widen your repertoire and try new things, but the best kind of fragrance love is the kind that goes straight to your heart, the kind you don’t have to explain or try to understand. If it doesn’t stupefy you with its beauty, then it’s okay to look for what does.
Yes.
Mals, you cut right to the heart of the matter, and said it wonderfully!
Yes, I think that’s the right spirit for me as I try out so many different samples. I have already come across several heart-stoppingly gorgeous scents that I never would have found if I stuck to perfumes or even notes I knew I liked. I guess I’m slightly surprised at myself not loving leather because in my mind (although clearly not in my nose) it fits with other rich and complex notes I tend to like, such as tobacco or wood.
Beautiful spring day in the city today, but still a bit windy and cold.
I reached for my decant of Le Labo Rose 31, and it simply worked beautifully, I could smell airy puffs of spicy, woodsy rose all morning. Sometimes I feel it turns sour on my skin, so I have no idea what made it work so nice today. Now I have dug out my decant of Tubèreuse 40.
I so do wish the Tubèreuse 40 was a part of the normal lineup, It is so stunning on me, and the comments I’ve gotten on it is stellar. A staple in the hot summer months. But the price is killing me in more ways than one (beautiful scent, but $$$ beautiful?).
One 5 ml decant a year is my current ration, I’m on my third one now.
Those exclusive prices are nuts and so annoying. I really like Limette, but who would pay that much for it? You smell great though!
Totally agree! I don’t get it. But it sure smells nice! Thanks 🙂
Gotta try that Limette when the opportunity presents itself.
Another grey day here, but at least it’s not raining. I’m in Voile de Violette by SSS. I got this dabber sample with the larger Forest Walk sample I ordered. I love Bois de Violette by SL, but it seemed to fade on me rather quickly so I thought maybe it’s because it was a violet scent. Well, I dabbed and then dabbed some more with today’s scent and great clouds of violets, Batman! I am in a veritable purple cloud of powdery violets. I probably didn’t need to put on so much, which is really surprising since it came out of a dabber! But I do like it a lot and think that I might buy this one instead of BdV because it’s got some oomph to it (and it’s cheaper).
Bois de Violette (which I adore) is faint on me as well, I suspect I cannot smell everything in the base. Or just have a blunt nose. Before buying Voile de Violette, do try the Wood Violet as well, though!
Agree and agree!
I find all of her scents to be pretty potent. Even the lighter themed ones. They seem more like extraits. I liked VdV as well, but prefer the sweeter Wood Violet.
I too prefer the Wood Violet, but they are both beautiful and the price point is very attractive!!
Have been a badly erratic commenter here of late, a combination of heavy work and complete exhaustion. Now the sun is shining and I feel like a flower waking up again!
I seem to have woken up to the wonders of rose rather late in my perfume exploration, and might have bought one or two this weekend. Today is Encre Noire pour Elle which is subtly lovely – not a huge rose but oddly appealing if you do not try to think of it is a vetiver at all.
I’m with you SophieC, and have missed so much here lately – you are not alone! Hope you get some relief soon, and more opportunities to come back and hang.
Hope work lightens up whether you make it here or not!
“Use the Force, Luke…Let it guide your actions.” -Obi Wan Kenobi
SOTD: Feeling quite posh and proper in Estee Lauder’s Very Estee. Up to my eyeballs in work, end-of-the-year PTA closeout accounting, and school activities. Only 16 more school days to go! 🙂
Time to hit it….and use the Force! 🙂
You can do it!
And i have been easing back into Estee Lauder’s lines- the offerings are so very lovely.
A heavy-handed sample-vial application of Jasmin et Cigarette today, to hopefully last through a long morning of meetings. Mild and mizzly here today — our spring showers are hanging on late this year!
Flowerhead today, offsetting my black boots and dress.
Love Flowerhead. I might love it more than Carnal Flower.
My favorite Byredo! This one is on my FB list, and I hope to be able to purchase it within the next few months. You smell great 🙂
I need to try this one. It sounds like one I would really enjoy. My guess is that you smell fabulous.
More grey skies and rain, Cuir Ottoman sounds just right. I am on a real leather and violet kick right now.
You smell great. I like leather and violet both separately and together 🙂
THere was a rainy-chilly spring not too long ago where all I wanted was leather and violets.
LOVE Cuir Ottoman. You smell great ????
Inspired by an event at the AG upper east side boutique last evening, I’m wearing Sables today. Nice meet up with some fellow NSTers 🙂 Camille Goutal and Isabel Doyen were there to launch Rose Pompon and to sign bottles. Sables is definitely my favorite from the line.
just got a sample of Sables, I haven’t tried it yet though.
I think it’s fabulous, if you like immortelle, which I do. My other favorite immortelle is SHL Un Nuit a Doha. I love the ginger and fennel in that one. Let us know what you think of Sables when you get to it!
Yum! You smell great!
Thanks, Natalya! I think I smell sophisticated, but I’m sure someone nearby is thinking “who’s eating pancakes?”!
For what it’s worth, I do not identify maple syrup with immortelle at all. Or was it maple syrup? I’m pretty sure that’s what they say. I never even heard of Un Nuit a Doha, gotta try it. Love Sables to bits.
I want some of this! I can’t believe I’ve ignored it thus far.
So fun seeing you!!
Great to see you, too!
I still have hints if the spritz of Sables on my wrist from last night. That is staying power! It is lovely…I think you need a FB…
It’s not my favourite Goutal, but Sables is a wonderful scent, and according to those who know best, the masterpiece in the line. So, you smell great!
I’ve considered a FB, but my decant has lasted me a long time since I use so little of it when I wear it. I’m hoping they include it in their new selection of travel sprays. That would be perfect!
Also in the violet mood I see in others and trying Violettes de Czar. I just bought a bottle of Chypre Mousse, which someone here loves and pointed me too. I can’t remember who to thank. It’s fabulous. VdC is awfully nice, although I am not sure how distinctive. Still trying to work out violet notes and will try SSS too. BdV doesn’t work on me for some reason.
Oh, I’ve wanted to try the VdC for some time now. Thanks for the reminder, I need to get a sample from First in Fragrance. If you like it, chances are I’ll like it as well.
I’m not loving it actually. It’s a little meh, but it also might be the wrong weather for it, so I’ll try again.
Tom Ford Noir de Noir. It feels and looks like fall, so it was easy to pick a TF fragrance. This is also a good one for those in the rose lovers support group!
I love that one. Must find my little decant…
I think I may still have a sample of this one. I need to dig through my stash.
Hump Day! What with the election results from last night and it being Star wars day, I should come up with something pithy, but I can’t.
SOTD: Kelly Caleche, which is just lovely and perfect for this mild, rainy spring day
OOTD: Green cotton/silk blouse and summer jeans, clogs.
You smell great.
It’s not pithy but how about this for primaries-and-Star-Wars?:
“Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”
Not pithy, but pretty much perfect!
I went to the same event as Elisa P. last night, and it was lovely – such an honor to meet Isabelle Doyen and also Camille Goutal, and spend time with my perfume buddies.
Sadly, all did not end well…I impulsively bought a bottle of Petite Cherie body oil for the opportunity to have it signed by the artist that made it, which felt like a once in a lifetime kind of thing, so I went with it. Camille told me to be sure to let the gold ink they’d used to sign the bottle dry for at least an hour, and so I carefully carried it outside of its box in the bag they’d provided, keeping an eye on the lettering during the subway ride home. An hour later I got home, was fumbling with putting my keys away in my purse, and turned in a way that tipped the Goutal bag over and sent my signed bottle crashing to the floor. Oil and glass shards – everywhere. And of course, being the klutz I am, while trying to clean it up, I slipped in the puddle and fell on my tuchus. I had to laugh.
My signed bottle and I had a good hour together. I just wish I’d had her sign the box.
Oh no, what a mess! Sorry that happened. At least you’re at the point already where you can laugh about it?
I’m making an effort to do so.
Strangely, my first thought, perhaps influenced by an Irish Catholic upbringing – “Serves me right.”
But the falling on my butt IN the oil was definitely the kicker. When you become that ridiculous, you have to laugh.
Oh, so sorry! On the upside, your entryway will smell fab for a long time to come ????
Thanks dear. And because I live in New York (small apartments = entryways are living rooms) I am hoping to have a Petite Cherie scented living room for a bit.
I saw your heartbreaking photo. I can’t believe that happened to you after debating that purchase 🙁 I think they’ll replace it for you, though. Not that that’s any consolation… It was really nice to see you, though 😀
It was really nice to see you, and my friend loved meeting all of you.
I’m a little shy about asking for a replacement when it’s my fault for its being broken…but everyone is telling me that I should try it. Just feel like a schmuck.
I think they’ll be understanding and accidents happen, so don’t beat yourself up!! Klutziness is charming(and expensive). I have some faith in their customer service and it wasn’t like it was 5 bucks. I didn’t know they’d be downtown tonight! If you have any motivation…
It happens. Long ago and far away, a young man goes shopping.
Brand new bottle of Devin in on bag, plastic doggy toys in another. Stops at grocery for dinner ingredients. Juggling too many bags…….CRASH !
Devin down, doggy toys intact.
The trash can in Rittenhouse Square smelled good for a while. 😉
OY.
At least the pups were happy?
One white Lhasa Apso named Kimba. And very pleased! 🙂
I can’t believe I’m reading this! Oh, no! I’m so sorry this happened to you. Ugh. Good reminder that perfume and the stuff of life, although brings us much delight and satisfaction, is really just stuff.
You have the memory of the evening, meeting the perfumer and seeing all of us!
I *love* getting to see all of you, and meeting Isabelle Doyen was such an honor. And things are just things. And I’m just a klutzy doofus – haha
Oh no! So sorry. My heart is sad for you.????
This just means something bigger and better is on its way for you.
I hope that life works this way – it’s a lovely thought. 🙂 Thanks
Just so sad and heartbreaking…. You know she’s at Bleecker tonight? Maybe you should show them your photo…
I may…I just feel so stupid about it all.
So sorry! I would have been miserable. On the other hand, your description sounds like a sitcom pilot.
You probably would have used up the oil and needed to part with the bottle at some point, but you were fortunate enough to have the experience. An advantage of NY.
That’s the spirit…. I sometimes tell myself “but it will make a good story…” Just to feel better. I have to say, I’m belatedly pondering the limited edition Songes oil…
My life can seem a bit sitcom-y at times, and you’re right, I do count myself very lucky.
OH NO! Were you the FFF friends post I saw?? how sad. 🙁
I was. And thanks.
I saw that and my heart hurt for you. A similar thing happened to me years ago so I can relate.
OMG, what a story. I agree you should show them the photo.
Poor you. You described the scene so well I can see it as a cartoon strip, inked in gold( naturally). Just think how fantastic it will be on the Spring day you walk through the streets of Paris to get a replacement…it will happen!
Oh my! I would have a hard time laughing at that for a few weeks, I think. Mostly because I would have blamed myself, too. I think something good will come of it for you, though.
Oh no! I’m in the klutz club too, so you have my sympathies. I’m glad you were able to laugh at least a little (and that hopefully you didn’t really hurt yourself?). I do hope you can get a replacement!
Oh, no!!! I am so sorry that happened, and so happy you could laugh about it!
Currently, SOTD is Eau de Coffee, which I spilled all down the front of me thanks to T-Rex jumping around like the canine clown she is….
Planning on applying my beloved Onda VdE when I finally get seriously moving this morning. I did a spin circuit class last night, which consists of 20 minutes of cardio spin and 40 minutes of weights and abs. Everything hurts. Even smiling. And breathing.
Yikes, it’s hard trying to physically improve oneself at age 51????
Just getting motivated is such a chore!
I would say Eau de Coffee is one of the more better lasting scents I know.
…That sounds like a tough thing to do at age 28, too. (I’ve never tried spin!)
Annick Goutal Rose Absolue today. It makes me think of lying beneath a dewy rose bush on a warm day that hasn’t blossomed yet–I don’t get “rose” so much as herbage and soil. I don’t love it (yet) but I think with certain clothes on certain days I will crave it. It will have a space on my shelf. 🙂
And FM Une Rose is all 3 — herbiage, soil, rose. Plus maybe some wine dregs. The AG is way more feminine though.
Since PG is up for discussion today I’m wearing Felanilla, from my second sample. I intend to get a decant at some point.
I love Felanilla, it’s been on my wish list forever.
Just received my decant of Felanilla today from a generous NSTer. I had posted it as a “want” on the Reverse Swap. 🙂
Tom Ford Noir women’s version.
I got Cuir Venenum from Parfumerie Generale, and it is the most weird fragrance in my collection. I am still not sure what I think of it. Tried Aomassai, and it is nearly equally not very comfortable (which is not a criticism at all). Although, Cuir d’Iris was nice.
I love Cuir Venenum, it’s fun! I get plenty wearable wierdness out of it, like wet hair, pale beer, candied fruit, pastel daisies, clean leather.. very addictive. A summer staple that one too, I like it with some pleasant heat on skin. I saw it in store some time ago and it was a shade of petrol in color! Thought the tester was turned, but it seems intentional. Never thought of it as petrol, though.
While I was looking for something else last night I found a long-lost, almost empty decant of Luctor et Emergo, so I’m wearing that this morning. I forgot how much I like this one. It smells like Play-Doh and incense, and it’s just a very comfortable scent.
Ah, I need a reminder from time to time too! Yum.
I did manage to find my decant of the current version of the original Miss Dior, after yesterday’s discussion. But alas, no 19 spoke to me and that’s what I’m wearing. I’m hoping that today will be a good day at work.
Hermes Hiris is my SOTD.
This reminds me that this has to go on my must try list. I don’t even know how it hasn’t happened yet considering I’m such a fan of both Hermes and Iris!
SOTD is Tom Ford Black Orchid Voile de Fleur, a very pretty fragrance I seldom wear.
Do you know how this differs from the original BO? I am quite curious.
I haven’t tried the original, but according to Fragrantica the Voile is lighter, with more white flowers, and without the chocolate note.
I adore the Voile de Fleur but can’t wear Black Orchid at ALL. THere’s a dirt-cocoa-cucumber thing in original BO, where the VdF is very creamy white flowers. Sad it’s d/c (and clutching my backup bottle possessively!).
You smell lovely. I’ve got a small charming bottle quite some years ago, a real steal. Wear it seldom here too, and again more often in the summer months. Steamy flowers.
Wearing Oriental Lounge, but sadly in an Occidental Office today…
You can’t have everything 😉
Quick PSA… If you have fallen in love with the oddly conceptualized, poorly marketed, and extremely overpriced Terveer perfume oils, there is an incredible sale on Barney’s Warehouse website. Ihadanidea sent me a sample of the Incense perfume oil a while back and I got totally hooked–except the pricing was totally daft. $185 for 8 mls of a ROLL-ON!!! Something they call Perfumealum??!
Unless money is no object, I do not recommend blind buying despite the low prices. The Incense fragrance has something naughty and indolic in it, probably the oud–unlike any incense I have ever sniffed. But if you did like their oils, check out the sale.
Perfumealum…someone who spent a fortune in fees in order graduate from perfume school ?
Gah! That’s it.
I don’t usually comment if more that 50 comments are in before I have a chance but I’m dying to know your first impressions of the new L’Eau, Robin. Persolaise seemed to hate it.
I chose a discreet amount of Deneuve. Maybe the parfum is worth all the fuss but the EdT is not the chypre I’d devote my life to hunting.
You smell fabulous. I’m sorry you don’t like the edt version. I love both versions of Deneuve to own a fair bit.
I enjoy it (only have a mini) but it isn’t worth the price to me. Luckily I found my mini in an antique mall for $5.
Big old meh from me. I don’t hate it, but I think I”m resolved to stop smelling the SL Eau series.
I rather enjoid l’Eau Froide but never got arround to LdV. How could he go wrong with hay? 🙁
Enjoyed, yow.
I adore hay. Actually, if it was just a dupe of a great hay cologne like what SMN Eva or PdN Chateau whatever used to be, I’d be thrilled. But no.
Ah, Vie de Château, I think it used to be called Cheverny before that, a great scent for sure.
Cold and rainy again! I had a lot of dental work today. I think I will crawl in bed and watch reruns of ” Soap” while the numbing wears off. I’m wearing a tiny bit of Escada Born in Paradise today, a comfort scent for me.
Dental visits are the worst, aren’t they? And way too expensive.
I think my teeth cost more than my car
Dental work. Ugh. But Soap! I used to love that show! Haven’t heard it mentioned in ages. Hope you don’t have too much pain after everything wears off.
It is still hilarious. They rerun it on IFC.
Same here…would be almost worth going to the dentist to get to watch Soap all day.
Ha! I read that as “denial work.” I need to crawl in bed when i am deeply in denial too…
Hahaha! That’s great.
Muguet Porcelaine today…just lovely.
They didn’t have samples at Hermes! I sent my husband there to stop in on his way home from work. They had it in stock–I called to make sure, but didn’t think to ask if they had samples. So I only got to smell it on a card. What I smelled though I really liked. I’m anxious to try it on my skin.
You guys are killing me. Still nothing in Montreal.
SOTD is PdN Sacrebleu from a sample. My chiropractor really liked it, and so do I. The opening was a tad fruity but it settled into something that is just my style for a day when my back is bothering me and I’m looking for comfort.
yum! you smell wonderful!
Oh, you smell lovely! Sacrebleu is a great comfort scent.
A cold, windy, and rainy day has me reaching for the comfort of vanilla, with warm touches of vanilla and soothing lavender. SOTD is LMDLV Vanille Sauvage de Madagascar, a warm, fluffy blanket of a scent.
SOTD is Perles de Lalique. I seem to say this a lot but I don’t wear thing one enough. Perhaps it’s because I have so many. However, this fragrance works for the office and I never get any offending remarks.
I don’t wear “this” not thing.
We’re perfume house twins today!
SOTD = Serge Lutens Chergui
Today, It’s all aboit the tonka bean, honey, chocolate and musk.
I’m debating what to wear on Friday. Technically, I have the day off but I will be dialing in to a call which, got rescheduled from the ungodly hour of 4:30 AM to something more reasonable.
Cousins! But you smell way better than I do.
4:30am?? Must be the conference call from hell with someone in Europe? How awful. Glad to hear they rescheduled.
I am not wearing any scent today since I showered with my new Mitsouko vintage soap this morning and didn’t want to mix it with anything else. It is perfection.
That sounds divine.
Wow, I bet that is fantastic!
Wow, sounds great! I just busted into my bar of Chanel No. 5. Not vintage though. It is just the right amount of No. 5 for me.
How does the Mitsouko soap compare to the EDT?
Linden flower for me today – Kerosene’s Pretty Machine. I have used up my little spray sample of this, and am still smitten. I see a FB in my future…
That one I would snap up in a minute if it were sold in a much smaller size.
Today I’m in several sample sprays of YS Uzac Immortal Beloved again. I tried it a couple/few weeks ago when the weather was hot, and I liked it. In today’s chillier weather, I’m really really liking it. It’s already pretty faint after 5 hours or so, but I think I’m fine with that. This is one of the first perfumes where I looked at the notes and thought I might like it, and actually do! Woot! To be fair, I may be swayed by my deep and everlasting love of the movie as well…
I have been wearing this based on your earlier posts and have finished my sample. And now I’ve decided that I really like it in this cooler weather and I will order a FB for winter. At first I foundit a little too boozy but with the cold the cognac stays closer to my skin and the other notes come forward. I think it’s lovely. I also like BOM Incense more now.
How interesting! We’re 2 for 2 so far, we could be long lost scent twins Kanuka!
Hurray! Keep the suggestions and comments coming.
Like many others today (or so it seems) feeling very tired from a combination of work and school finals. Needed something energizing and happy, and a spritz of Agonist’s Solaris seems to be doing the job.
I’ve also finally started delving into the world of Thierry Mugler, and while Angel is just a little too sweet for my personal tastes, I find I like Alien and Womanity quite well.
Does anyone have any recommendations for a patch-cocoa scent that’s a tad less sweet?
SL Borneo 1834 or the less expensive but d/c YR Neonatura Cocoon, my favorite patch/dry cocoa scent. But good luck finding either at a reasonable price these days.
The Angel Taste of Fragrance version is very nice – the cocoa is amped up, but it’s pretty dry. There’s a review here and looks like Beauty Encounter and other discounters still have it for pretty cheap.
Slumberhouse Ore
Chanel Coromandel
Tauer Dark Passage (sadly a limited edition)
I’ve been thinking about which perfumes in a single perfumers output could be considered the ‘transitional’ or change of direction scent. So, there might be a body of work that has a strong identity leading up to this perfume but then the perfumer has tried to shift the focus, which might lead to something so exploratory that it fails to engage for one or two scents, before a new, maybe daring, groove is established. I imagine these would have to be perfumes from a perfumer- directed line….like Andy Tauer, for example. So, a kind of hump day perfume, getting over the hump to move forwrd. Any ideas? Anyone u derstand what I’m getting at. The failures mid or late career might indicate a change.
The one that comes to mind is JC Ellena, pre- and post- Bulgari Cologne Au The Vert.
Yes but he seems to,have made a transition without the wonky experiment that marks the transition. So his transition was polished? Is that right…or did he have a few self conscious failures along the line?
Public failures or private failures? Only the perfumer themself would know.
It was related to something Bjork said:
“Maybe some things won’t be immaculate, but it will push you out of the comfort zone. Looking at my favourite music, I really love albums where there were two or three songs that are amazing, but wouldn’t have happened unless the person had gone to that particular place and did 7 OK songs, but three magic ones…I love the sort of faulty bits that you can hear through an album that was done 30 years ago, when they’re feeling it through, haven’t quite found it yet, and then on song seven everything falls into place. It becomes more precious or something.”
I guess I was wondering about public failures, the 7 OK perfumes.
I’m thinking of a perfume where , when it is released, you think ‘this is terible’ but later, with the benefit of hindsight you can say, ‘ oh yeah, I can see that perfume marked a seismic shift in direction, and what followed was pretty good, then back to great’
Eau de Merveilles for me today. I miss the sound and sight of the ocean, might have to make a little road trip this weekend.
Chilly-ish day here today. had some chai this morning so decided to put on a little Jacomo #08. Nice and spicy.
gris clair, which I picked from the sample cup because the name seemed to match our windy, cool day…
It’s a bit fatherly cologne for me, but an intriguing scent…
I was given a sample of Kate Spade’s Live Color Fully, and thought I might give it a try for a few days.
The notes listed citrus, but all I’m getting is a big wallop of wild honeysuckle!
Do you like it?
no time even to root for my no-brainer scent today (hermes voyage, master of disguise and lurking in the back of my perfume shelf) so I wore one- just one- spray of shalimar, which was hanging out right next to my hand. It wasn’t ideal in the beautiful bright spring day we’ve had. I always feel like it’s rather seductive and it truly wasn’t that kind of day. O well!
This grey drizzly weather is starting to get to me. Blerg. In this mood I can go three ways with perfume – go for cozy, embrace it and pick something moody, or fight it and go with a bright spring fragrance. Yesterday I chose cozy with TF Noir Pour Femme. Today I embraced the weather and went with Infusion d’Iris. I hope they never discontinue IdI.
So, last night and this morning I couldn’t figure out why the late late dry down of Noir Pour Femme was so familiar – until I realized it smells like the dry down of Iris Poudree. They both have a vanilla/sandalwood/amber base so I guess it’s not that weird …
Happy May the Fourth!
Always remember: HAN SHOT FIRST!!!
It’s so warm here it’s almost like Tatooine! ???? SOTD is Elie Saab Le Parfum.
At first glance at the posted photo, I thought Han was flipping us all off ????
It kinda looks like it, doesn’t it? ????
Raining here today, for the first time in ages. We’ve had the most amazing run of beautiful weather this autumn, I’ve almost forgotten how to use my umbrella. I’m planning on OJ’s Orris Noir, a rich scent for a dull day.
And Infeel like we’re rotting with moisture in the U.S. Northeast! At least 4 days of damp rain on and off weather. I am jealous of your autumn, my favorite season.
May the Fourth be with you!
SOTD is Gucci Rush.
Ok. That wins.
LOL. I meant to comment that how nice it was that you and Coumarin met up! It just takes 2 to begin a perfumista get-together.
Guerlain Vetiver pour elle today. I quite enjoyed it but the regular Vetiver seems to last longer on me.
Started today with TF Italian Cypress. In the afternoon put Bronze Goddess cream on my legs mixed with some self tanner. Then about 8 spritzed some Bottega Veneta. Not sure what got into me. 🙂
Sounds good to me!
Test drove Guerlain Habit Rouge Dress Code today. It is really quite nice. If you have a hankering for a more unisex version of Habit Rouge, with a little less citrus and more dusty rose, this could be the ticket. I have a pre-IFRA bottle of the EDT which I just love so I do not see the need for this new one but I think it is one of the better recent offerings from Guerlain.
