Monday scent of the day 12/14

Posted by Robin on 14 December 2015 178 Comments

L'Occitane Subtle Violet

Happy Monday everyone! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm commando other than a bit of L'Occitane Subtle Violet hand cream. I had to take a short, unexpected trip, and that's all I have with me. I'll be heading home shortly so posting will be light today.

Reminder: this Friday, 12/18, we're doing Best Buy Friday: wear your favorite fragrance purchase of 2015. If you didn't buy anything this year, pick a favorite from a prior year.

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I was so disappointed when I tried it the first time because I had seen it described as the scent of an orange tree from fruit to roots, and as a third generation citrus farmer that is a very nostalgic scent for me.
It really does smell like a citrus tree, slightly green fruit, crushed stems, a bit of the lime green moss that grows on the trunks. I would call it a green aromatic chypre with a citrus soul. I plan to take one of my bottles after Christmas on my trip to the groves and do a tree to wrist comparison.

Whenever someone posts a fragrance I’m not familiar with, I immediately google on another page. I had not heard of Swallow, and then got a laugh when I looked further down to see it was a typo! HA HA

I’m wearing Hermes Iris Ukiyoe, a souvenir from a vacation last week. It’s a pretty, watery floral. (Or a “pretty watery” floral…). I like it, but I don’t smell and iris. Hmm. It is nice with the warm weather we are having though. It’s almost 60 degrees here in Chicago.

I LOVE Iris Ukiyoe but it really didn’t win any favor by calling itself an iris.

I also love IU, in part because it doesn’t smell like iris. As the photo on the Hermes website shows, IU smells like a purple watercolor looks.

I’m in Chicago and wearing an Hermes by JCE for the warmer weather, too! Voyage d’Hermes, an older favorite from before perfume became a major hobby of mine. :) I still like it, but not as much as I used to.

I bought this before I fell hard down the rabbit hole and loved it until I didn’t anymore, about halfway through the R2D2 bottle and I sold it. I now have the parfum which has more character.

I’m in California and ironically we’re much colder than you in Chicago, in the low 40s right now, but I’m also wearing Hermes–Cuir d’Ange. It’s just about right for this weather.

Lucy, Iris Ukiyoe is intended to smell like iris flowers rather than iris roots (which is where iris butter and the usual iris note comes from). It’s my favorite Hermessence except possibly Cuir d’Ange, but definitely a spring and summer scent.

I’m a real oris root fan, and wish perfumer marketers would be more clear as to root vs flower. Very different notes.

I’m in Burberry Brit Red, the sexy but serious brunette cousin to the trashy original. I loved the body cream since it was new but I recently bought a bottle of the perfume. It’s not revelatory but it is a great deal. Spicy and barely sweet. My bottle actually came to me from a nearby suburb (via Ebay. Go local!)

You know, I keep thinking I’m prepared for the level of generosity displayed by my perfume buddies here, and I keep on being happily stunned.

I was delighted to be able to send something to someone here (am I allowed to say who it is? Not sure what the policy is regarding that) and of course they insisted on sending something back. I didn’t need it at all, but she was so enthusiastic about being able to give that I couldn’t say no. And just now, the package she prepared for me was delivered, and OH MY GOODNESS! Decants of all kinds of amazing scents – and with a theme! The packaging is adorable and I’m beside myself at this unexpected gift. She’s a magical perfume fairy, this one.

What can you do with such generosity except be incredibly grateful and just promise to pay it forward? So that’s what I will do.

You will never hear me say that I’m not lucky, and if you do, please remind me of this.

Hope you all have as good a day as the one I’m having here!

Yes. It always got tucked away in the back of my cabinet and I’d find it in June or August and think,”This year, I’ll remember to wear this.” She’s now sitting on my night table so I remember to enjoy this fun perfume throughout the season… And to help me ration out my few remaining drops of Ambre Narguile which I love to wear while baking. The combination is magic so we’ll see how Jingle G compares! ;)

Already 71 degrees in Atlanta, and rainy muggy. We’ve got fans running at work trying to move the air around! I’m not complaining though….I really should move to the equator so I can be warm all the time!

Speaking of the equator….I’m wearing Estee Lauder’s Brasil Dream. I like it well enough, but I think their Bronze Goddess is much better. Still, this is a nice tropical vibe for an unseasonably warm day.

Jamming to Foreigner’s song “Urgent”….this week is CRAZY with work, school finals, baking baking baking for holiday events, and so forth! Foreigner gets my head straight! :) Rock this Monday!

Lots of eye plinks and big yawns here today. The weather has been so warm that it threw me off and I slept horribly last night. I was constantly either too hot or too cold but didn’t want the extra blanket yet needed the fan… Ok I’m ready for real winter weather now. It doesn’t feel like December and actually kinda made me sad yesterday.

I say that but I was totally glad to take advantage of the warmth and managed to make my weekly goal of running 20 miles for the week. My hips are now angry with me and that’s fine because it’ll rain all day and I intend on being a slug when I get home from work.

Journey Woman is keeping me awake… along with the second cuppa I’m about to make…

T minus 7 days until my tropical Christmas vacation, and I was hoping to get in a few of my winter favorites, but it’s strangely warm, so I guess they’ll have to wait. It’s hard to complain about 70-degree weather, but it IS a little confusing in December. Wearing Nirvana Black because I didn’t quite know what to do this morning. I have to say, though, I think it was the right choice!

I think the ambergris in the Ambre may be tempered a bit by the sweet notes so maybe the salty/iodine smell of ambergris aren’t as obvious. Although I can definitely smell it. I find it more pronounced in the Eau and Elixir versions.

Thank you! It smells like a great hug too, and I NEED one today because it’s freezing in my office! I’m a little envious of the warm temperatures those on the East Coast seem to be having – here in Oregon it’s a little warmer than usual, but still COLD, don’t you think?

I chose to wear another perfume oil today, Possets The Moon. It is supposed to be a combination of three musks and beeswax. When I first put it on I smelled gardenia, then it smelled a little soapy. Now I am getting the beeswax. Overall, it’s quite nice.

Almost twins, Robin – I’m wearing the lip balm from the same violet collection (one of my favorites from L’Occitane).

I’ve just received the Puredistance sample set as a gift: if anyone has a favourite in the line, let me know, I have no idea where to start. The only one I’m familiar with is Opardu and I think it’s lovely.

M is my favorite too. Black is nice, and I love Opardu. White did nothing for me, but I think it’s fairly popular. They are all well done, it’s one of the better samplers I’ve had.

I’ve only tried Antonia and M, didn’t like the former, very much enjoyed the latter. I thought the sample set was a little ‘overpackaged’ to be perfectly honest so I never pursued the rest of the line. M is gorgeous though.

I’m afraid I may be setting it up for failure with that comparison. They are very different, but they both smell like the ideal self we sometimes need to project and yet are enjoyable rather than off putting.

I completely got your meaning, no worries. That category of scents is fascinating and even if Puredistance I turns out not to be for me, if it works as the ‘ideal self scent’ for someone, it will be interesting to smell.

It got cool again this weekend, so after a few days of wearing MCMC “Maine” I’m testing Tauerville’s “Amber Flash”. Amber used to be one of my favorite notes, but lately I’ve been finding it (if at all prominent) to be overly sweet. That said, “Amber Flash” is much lighter than I was expecting, with the “smoke” effect I get from certain perfumes (Gris Clair for one, though that’s lavender smoke and this is amber smoke).

Oh my! That sounds heavenly! Do you happen to remember who made it? I wish there were more violet flavored things around. You can find a few of the old fashioned ones, that don’t really do it justice usually. And the little Canel’s violet gum packages are tasty, but hard to find.

When I think about it, the thought of keeping the cats indoors forever makes me kind of sad as I think they like to be outdoors. I tried it with one of my cats but we never made it outside and I have a few scars from trying to get the harness on. As the kids say: epic fail.

Woke up at 3 am with a fork in my left eye. No. Not a fork, on careful examination, just a whopper migraine. Maxalt and 6 hours later I am functional. Still feeling battered (removal of fork took a while) I crawled back in bed after getting the kids off to school… Drinking coffee with cardamom and sniffing my wrist to which I rather cavalierly applied Bal A Versailles, edt. It is from a mini, and in my post headache fog I think I confused small bottle with small scent. Hah. Fortunately it is not causing a headache rebound, but it is chewy stuff! I’m getting neroli, patchouli, soap, and leather and a bunch of other florals and spices…maybe carnation? Got to look this one up. It is a BIG scent from a tiny bottle. Ooof.

Oof is right! Not what I’d recommend post migraine. The first time I tried Bal was in 90 degree weather and I’d put on a hefty amount. I nearly suffocated myself(and probably others in close proximity). Hope you’re feeling better. I love cardamom in coffee. A dose of honey goes nicely with it, too.

The best of good mornings to everyone. I’ve had a few days away from NST, and I’ve missed chatting! I had fun though…it’s great to go home every now and again. This is the last week of work before the university closes for three weeks, and I confess that my head is already on holiday. I’m forcing myself to finish one last big AWFUL job., but I can’t say it’s my best work ever. So, it’s a 19 day, my friends, and 19 extrait at that! Happy girl! I got my big bottle of Rose Jam yesterday and learned that they’ve expanded the line to include shampoo, a bath bomb-y thing, and message lotion.
I bought the message lotion, which is very interesting in that its a solid bar of lotion you rub to get softer and then apply it like lotion.

Now I can smell like Rose Jam even more, something I’m very happy about! And best part is that my husband likes it too.

What a wonderful mix of tart & sweet and rose.

I think this scent is brilliant. How it manages to not be too much as some fragrances with these notes tend to be is just a amazing. It balances the assertiveness of some powerhouse notes so well.

YSL Nu bumped up by a tiny spray of LADDM on the back of my neck (a combo cribbed directly from NST suggestions). I am having a bad allergy day, so was going without for the morning, but then decided that I’d prefer to smell interesting while dealing w/stress hives and the like. It makes sense, while making no sense.

Oh allergies are the worst. So sorry. LADDM seems to help my nose, sometimes. That + Nu is an interesting idea. You smell great!

Thanks for the reminder of that combo! I think it was Elisa that suggested it in the YSL Friday project. Next cold day… Hope your allergies calm down soon.

I’m wearing Lipstick Rose from a sample. I don’t know that I feel a need to own it (my bank account is thanking me, I’m sure), but I like it. The opening is a little harsh, but because it smells to me like hairspray and nail polish, it kind of sets a scene in a way that seems unusual.
