It's hump day...plus it's Mickey Mouse's birthday (Steamboat Willie was released on this day in 1928). What fragrance are you wearing?
My pick for today: Yves Saint Laurent In Love Again.
Reminder: this Friday, 11/20, wear a fragrance from Yves Saint Laurent, if you have one.
And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.
Note: top image is Ariel Pink and Marilyn Manson for (Yves) Saint Laurent, 2013.
Back on the Venezia train again, and also enjoying a little bit of Oud Ispahan on my wrist from a tiny bottle I bought from a lovely woman on Facebook Fragrance Friends.
Hope all is well with everyone!
Not a bad train to be on 🙂
Had one of those nights where the heartburn just was not coming down. The joys of pregnancy. Went to grab my bottle of antacids when I knocked it over the cap broke and all the Tums spilled out all over the floor. This is about 2 AM and I just looked at the scattered Tums everywhere and just said F-it and rolled over and went back to sleep.
Feeling a bit groggy this morning.
Anyhow sent of the day is beloved woman by Amouge
Yep, the raw beauty of pregnancy… At least you smell great!
Beloved is so gorgeous
Thank you! ????
I’ve had many of those F-it moments even when I wasn’t pregnant. Hang in there, I’ve heard the grogginess gets better in about 18 years. I’m surprised you feel like wearing any scent all that you’ve got going on. Tums didn’t work for me. Not only were they pretty much ineffective, but I developed kidney stones at the end of my first trimester and the doctor told me to stop. Which was fine because the only thing that ever gave me any relief was a good, old-fashioned can of Coca-Cola.
Thanks. I had the same sort of heart burn with my first pregnancy. Even though my nose is like a fox – I find some fragrances I can handle.
Kidney stones!? Oh how painful. That’s all you really needed! I should be more careful.
A can of Coke sounds good right about now
I don’t blame you for leaving them on the floor. Bending over when pregnant & heartburned = NO.
I only had heartburn with one of my pregnancies (no, it’s okay, I had plenty of other stuff, I suffered 😉 ). but it’s no fun. HOpe you’re feeling better now.
Heartburn is so weird, right?! I never had it until pregnancy, and I experienced it as this burning white-blue light. Glad it is over, and sending good thoughts to you that the heartburn will be gone soon and you’ll have a lovely little baby.
In the meantime, saying F-it was DEFINITELY the right answer. Get all the sleep you can.
Pregnancy sucks and Beloved is wonderful. Where is that stork when you need it? Good luck.
Thanks! My husband helped me this morning with the mess and went out and bought me a chocolate chip muffin before work. Muffin + Beloved Amouage= an ok day!
I agree Missionista-I thought I knew what heartburn was until I became pregnant. Your description of the light is right on
SOTD – Alien Taste of Fragrance. Yum!
Wish they’d do another set like Taste…
Oooh…is it very gourmand? I’m a huge fan of the original Alien, and I’d love to know how it compares.
I am actually not a huge fan of either Alien or Angel generally but the Taste of Fragrance and Liqueur de Parfum flankers are really nice. I find Alien Taste of Fragrance to be gourmand. Thick and Sweet but not crazy sweet, but still a little salty and strange and caramelly.
Absolutely YUM. Probably my favourite Alien.
My sotd is Vêpres Siciliennes, by Parfums MDCI. I seem to be doing French Niche this week.
I never got round to trying In love again, a pity, because I’m sure I would have liked it.
You can still buy it, in the new packaging:
http://www.yslbeautyus.com/in-love-again/539YSL.html
never tried that version though.
Yes you are right. I seem to remember though that they have been tweaked considerably, and I hate those square bottles.
I still regret not purchasing In Love Again when it first came out. I think about the new version, but then I’m afraid to be disappointed.
VS is very lovely. I know I have a small sample of that from years ago when I was hoping that MCDI might slash their prices just for me….
I’m just becoming more selective about buying so I can get me some Invasion Barbare. MDCI is expensive, but these days so many lines are, and I adore their style. Still I wouldn’t mind a price drop either 😉
VS is very lovely, not an exciting scent but oh so pretty.
Have to go back to the dentist school today. I think it’s a tooth cleaning and fixing some of my tooth issues. Pre-shower I am wearing Spirituese Double Vanille. After I get out of the shower I will wear Infusion d’Iris. I’d rather wear a perfume I don’t really have an attachment to. Epic and no 19 I do and I don’t want them spoiled by going to the dentist.
Good luck at the dentist!
How do you find SD Vanille?
It’s slowly growing on me but I still like Havana Vanille better. I think that the Guerlain might be a little too burnt smelling for my liking.
Ah- in that case I would definitely like it!
SOTD is Avignon, layered over Lush’s Rose Jam shower gel (so thrilled I got half a liter of it yesterday, as a birthday gift for myself!) and Lush’s Hottie massage bar. The three work great together, I can figure each, and yet they mingle in a deliciously spicy incensey rosey cloud.
Sounds fabulous!
Avignon plus Rose Jam sounds like something I absolutely must try together!
Yes! Adding it to my to-try list.
Happy Birthday, Solanace, and many more.
Thank you, dear!
Hey! Happy Birthday!
Thank you! 🙂
My SOTD is Hummingbird, from Zoologist. It’s sweety, fruity, delicious!
Mickey’s Birthday? Well in that case, SOTD is the Tonka Imperiale I picked up at Disney World. Oddly, I was just at the Disney Store a few days ago and picked up a t-shirt with pictures of Mickey over the years, starting with 1928 and Steamboat Willie. I guess I should wear that today too.
Still sticking by France today with CSP Amour de Cacao. This is a nice inoffensive and easy crowd pleaser and since I will be “amongst sensitive souls” today, I decided to to wear something sure to make everyone happy 🙂
Good choice! It’s my go-to when I want to smell terrific but not risk offending anybody. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like it, even people who say they’re allergic to all scents (usually the same people who use scented detergent and shampoo and hand lotion and and and).
When I can’t bear to abstain, I like to wear a touch of something light and relatively clean that could credibly appear in a shampoo or lotion, such as 28 la Pausa. If someone accused me of wearing perfume, I would say it must be my shampoo. A little white perfume lie, yes, but it seems fair if I’ve worn something far less strident than most shower gels and dryer sheets.
I do have a Pilates instructor who is genuinely allergic to scores of substances, and I never wear perfume to the lessons since she can’t avoid proximity sometimes to do the corrections and, of course, when I’m working up a sweat, any sillage would really bloom.
Amour de Cacao would make a lovely shower gel, wouldn’t it? 😉
When I am around people who are fussy about perfume (but not allergic) I wear a touch of perfume anyways. I spend a long time choosing something that won’t be sharp or offensive. When I get no comments, I feel like I won, hah!
Rose Pepper, yes! A thousand times YES. I do this too and feel the same way.
Yes, stealth perfume enjoyment!
Same here! My safe perfumes are: Cuir Beluga, Chergui, Bvlgari Black, Chanel No.19 EDP, SDV.
I smell delightful in PdN Vanille-Tonka
Lovely! One of my fav vanillas.
Yummy.
Vintage (1998) Perry Ellis Reserve. It’s SO GOOD. Pure understated masculinity, nothing ultra-fresh or hackneyed or grandfathery. No idea what it smells like now but the original stuff is underrated genius.
Agnès b le b composed by Olivia Giacobetti, transparent and effortless yet great projection and longevity.
Oh man, that one sounds great; had never heard of it & just looked it up…
I’m wearing a little bit of Amouage Lyric and today it’s reminding me quite a bit of Une Rose Chypree.
I can intuit the relationship enough to say, “yes, makes sense to me,” but don’t ask me to explain it. Love Lyric. There’s something chewy and weird in the bottom of URC that keeps it out of the Love It category for me, but it really is good stuff.
It might be assisted by whatever is left over on my arm from last night, but either, way it smells really good!
I get chewy out of URC too – also some sort of weird fried food smell. I can totally see the association with Lyric too – both are very thick.
28 La Pausa for me today since that is all I have with me. 5 minutes of its steely iris embrace is better than nothing!
Can’t wait to be back home tomorrow…y’all will be smelling me from all four corners of the earth! I will be wearing everything!
Hope all is as well as can be expected. Enjoy your homecoming.
Glad you are getting to go home and be with your lovelies. Hope you’re doing ok.
Loving the warmth of my Frapin 1270 on this cool and very windy Denver day.
Jolie Madame in the morning, Fracas in the evening. Love both. Gemaine Cellier was a brilliant perfumer!
I have never tried Jolie Madame and just got a sample from the most recent swapmeet. What do you like about it?
In the first place, violet (both flower and leaf) is one of my favourite notes in perfumes, and it is done beautifully here. Green, fresh, bitter and sweet at the same time, and elegant. The there is leather – dark and warm, kind of heavy. And despite (or maybe thanks to?) this contrast everything goes very well together. I need to try it again for a more detailed description, but these are my first impressions.
Agree on the contrast. I think I’ve said in the past the Jolie Madame is exactly as much Violets Growing in the Woods as it is Combat Boots.
Good description.
Or maybe a leather coat left in the flower shop. 🙂
Wow! That is a great description. That has moved up to the must try this weekend list!
The YSL site code privatesale (20% off $75 orders) doesn’t start till tomorrow, sorry! According to my postcard it’s valid through 12/6.
Very rainy & windy today, need to seek out some sunshine in a bottle.
Perhaps a smidge of vintage CSP Tiare.
Thanks for the tip!
SOTD is Chanel 19 EDP. The roses in this are really blooming this morning, more than they usually do. Nice!
I get lots of rose in the EdP. Lovely stuff.
Vintage No 19 parfum for me today.
On my second cup of tea (yunnan) and I just had a coffee flavored yogurt. I’m clearly needing more caffeine today.
After work the hubs, a friend and I are driving an hour away to check out a really cheap mid century sideboard for our dining room. It looks ok in the photos, but I’m hoping it’ll be better in person to make it worth the trip. It’s definitely a steal for it’s size. Fingers crossed!
Good luck, jenkr! Had to search for just the right sideboard, and it’s perfect.
What fun, who makes the sideboard?
We don’t know. They didn’t specify, but we didn’t get it. We got some high-res photos and decided that it was a bit too beat up looking for what we wanted. Back to square one!
We did get two gorgeous Laine mid century side tables for our living room last weekend though 🙂 And I grabbed a marble topped tulip side table for my study.
Wearing Coco today. I am seriously thinking of investing in a FB of 31 Rue Cambon. I really enjoyed the sample of it. I liked Misia too, but thought it smelled too much like Love, Chloe which I already have.
Question-Do any of you have a scent that just turns on you? I have had a few that smell kind of “skunky” after I put them on. I thought maybe they all had the same notes in them, but that has not been the case. I am guessing that the acidity in a person’s skin has something to do with it, but know that one of you intelligent people will know the answer. Thanks in advance.
Yes – this occasionally happens to me with AG Songes. I just have to put on a small bit before I see if it “works” for me on any given day, and if it does, then I put on more. Maybe it’s the jasmine indoles?
That could be it. Two of the three had jasmine in them. One did not though so not sure if there are other notes that might “turn” too or not.
I thought the same about Misia. Love, Chloe is one one of my faves and I like it even better than Misia. I was relieved not to add yet another fragrance to my buy list. 🙂
Hermes L’ambre des mervailles (sp?) always turns on me. Smells strongly fecal, which I’ve never heard anyone else mention.
Misia and 31RC are both so great. I am contenting myself with larger decants for now (just ordered more yesterday, in fact). But you should go for it!
There are definitely some perfumes that smell great on others and only meh or even unpleasant on me. Also, the same perfume might smell great to me one day, and borderline urinous on another. Don’t know if it’s my nose, the weather, my mood, how recently I’ve applied lotion, or what.
Lately, with my sick kitties I haven’t been putting any thought into what scent I put on in the morning. This morning I grabbed a bag that holds Dame Perfumery travel sizes, and some decants from STC. I just reached in and ended up with Dame Perfumery’s Mandarin, Neroli, and Cedar. Good enough. On the good news front, my cats seem to be recovering from their virus. Both are eating well and drinking, although they are both still congested and sneezing regularly.
That’s good news!
Glad your kitties are getting better 🙂
Yes, it looks like your kitties are on the mend. Great!
*Looking at nozknoz’s and rose pepper’s avatars* I have a black cat. 😉
I have two boys, Midnight, who’s black, and an orange tabby named Punkin. I also have two girls, an orange and cream tabby named Lily, and a dilute (grey and buff) tortoiseshell named Bella. It’s Midnight and Bella who are sick, but recovering.
Midnight is a lovely name for a black cat.
Best wishes to Midnight and Bella.
There cannot be too many black cats! 😉
True!
Glad they’re on the mend! We worry about our kitties.
Lalique Le Parfum today. It’s a minty-vanillic-oriental that I adore. Ropion rules.
I love le parfum – to me the spicy bay note really makes it special. I’ll have to look out for the mint.
Due entirely to the incredible generosity of Hajusuuri today I am in Jour d’Hermes. Thank you!
30 min in and I am still detecting fresh grapefruit – zesty enough that my mouth is tingling in anticipation! However, when I get a closer sniff I get an ethereal floral, with grapefruit as a distant backup.
Just remarkable – I’ll bet this makes a hell of a splash in summer, although I’ll definitely wear this year round. 🙂
Baking chocolate chip cookies this morning. That plus the grapefruit pretty much means my mouth has been constantly watering for the last hour or so. Worth it!
Enjoy them!
I’m planning for a big purchase and have been fretting about making the right choice. That plus all the terrible things going on in news lately (and the inevitable corresponding judgmental and disrespectful remarks by coworkers) have left me stressed, a little rage-y and detracted from my sleep. For whatever reason–maybe for the comforting aspect–I think I’ve been hallucinating the smell of vanilla at strange moments. So today, I’m feeding the craving and wearing Vanille Absolument. I obviously made the right choice for my mood because I can’t stop sniffing myself.
Hope the vanilla helps!
Eleebelle, I am lucky to be retired now, but your comment brings back how stressful it was to work in cubicle space after any sort of controversial event. I learned so much about my coworkers’ prejudices, ignorance, small-mindedness and lack of empathy that I would have been happier never knowing. And they were generally normal, nice people; I could have had it worse, I realize. I suppose it is instructive to observe how people get caught up in these reactions and resolve to be more aware of and vigilant of what is in one’s own mind.
It’s remarkable how your brain led you to just what you needed with a scent hallucination!
As much of a shame as it is that anyone has to deal with unkind coworkers, it’s kind of a relief that I’m not totally alone in that situation. Glad you’re free of them now!
I am taking a brief detour from YSL week and sampling Memo African Leather. It is a sweet spicy, ambery leather. Too sweet for my taste.
AP Timbuktu today. I really like this one. The first time I tried a sample, I practically swooned and swore to buy an FB immediately. This second time, I am liking it a lot, but not swooning in quite the same way. It’s quite licorice-y today, and I don’t know if I am ready to commit to an FB of that.
That one is so interesting and changeable!
Still no perfume this AM, but Hajusuuri’s bounty is waving come hither at me my from my dresser. I am trying to save Mitzah for Friday, but the little spray flask is over there grinding and bumping like its never going to rain… so I may just have to wear it twice this week. I am now officially a Mitzah fangirl.
I have a question relating to my Neela Vermeire aspirations, and testing perfumes at a great perfume store. So. The holidays are coming and Neela Vermeire has risen to the top of my wish list. AND I am (so my DH promises this escape) going to visit Scent Bar in LA over the Thanksgiving holiday… What to do about the Mohur Extrait dilemma. For me, it is astronomically priced… but neck and neck with Mohur, the Extrait is really my preference. But until I tried it, I thought Mohur was the bomb! And then what about Trayee and Pichola? This is a resource question smack up against a wish question. What should I buy and why? I am stumped.
And, anyone have any tips for Scent Bar sniffing? Is there anything out there that I should absolutely test because it is really hard to find? How can I maximize my experience there? I am actually a little stressed about the whole thing (okay–in-law terror is mixed in there with the stress a little). I am just worried I am going to be overwhelmed and wind up snuffling up to the Amouages in a corner and not really branching out.
Hmmm, good dilemma to have. I couldn’t decide among the first three NV perfumes, so I bought the discovery coffret for “only” $140 or so. You could do that and the Mohur Extrait, maybe one now and one later?
I advocate for following your heart with the extrait, if you have the money to spare. I haven’t sampled the extrait yet myself, for fear of falling in love and “needing” to buy it. 🙂
Seconding the recommendation for the NV coffret: 8ml each of Trayee, Mohur (not the extrait), Bombay Bling, and Ashoka. Currently 125 euros on her website — free shipping. Sadly though it still doesn’t seem to include Pichola. For me, 8ml will last quite a while, so the coffret scratched my NV itch 🙂
Well, Trayee was my grail until I tried Via del Profumo Hindu Kush and I’m so glad I didn’t lay out the major cheese for the NV. I have bought really expensive perfume (Lyric) and found out later that it’s not quite right. I’m always looking for that fabled ONE, but so far not successful.
That being said, totally go for the Mohur extrait. It sounds like you are very solid in your preference for it. As perfumistas, I think we are always looking for something more, more beautiful, more compelling, more timeless. It’s just the way we are.
Interesting. So, theoretically (I love theoretical perfume purchases) I could purchase Hindu Kush (after testing—I see STC has samples available) at some point, Pichola at some point… and go for broke with Mohur extrait at this juncture… the mists are lifting…. (thank you for indulging me in this highly spoiled and self-centered dilemma!).
I went to the Perfume House in PDX a few years ago and I was so excited but also bummed b/c I realized I’d only be able to smell about 5 or 6 fragrances before my nose would give out. I tried to select a few houses to investigate, but I did indeed get distracted by bottles I didn’t anticipate I’d want to smell. The experience of going to a great shop is so awesome. At the very least, try and connect with a rep that will give you good service over the phone later on, explain your situation, etc.
I’d take a list of fragrances you want to smell, take a pen for notes and labeling those paper strip smelly things, a small bottle of that gel-alcohol stuff in case you get something you want off on your hands, etc. Smell from weakest to strongest if you can be that organized. (I went with the awesome Angie to the PH and her nose got crushed very early in our endeavor by some major iso e super in a Comme des Garcons fragrance and couldn’t even go on.)
I find that the notes I took while I visited Perfume House were invaluable for me to get back to all the frags that I just couldn’t smell on that same day. I didn’t get any samples, but I did go back the next day and bought a bottle from them. It’s so exciting for you!! Good luck.
That is great advice. I need to put together a list, not just in my weak and addled head, but on paper…
Random other note—when I filled out SB’s online form to help them help me choose what to sample, their choices for me were ones that I have in fact never sampled, but also were never in my range of curiosity…so I am looking forward to being pressed to try new things. Their list for me:
Acqua Viva by Profumum
1725 by Histoires de Parfums
Veni by Histoires de Parfums
1996 by Byredo
Korrigan by Lubin
Jasmin Angelique
I would love to try 1996…that is on my list.
Whatever the outcome, looks like you’ll have a fantastic and interesting day.
Wonderful advice – thank you! I haven’t yet visited the Perfume House (shame on me since I work in Portland), but I definitely have a mental list that I will jot down and organize before visiting.
Any other advice for a Perfume House newcomer?
I’ll be in Portland in early August next year for my niece’s wedding reception. It will be a catered event at my brother’s house in Lake Oswego. I may be able to drag my sister to the Perfume House but really thinking we may not have time to do stuff on our own.
Just be prepared to swoon. It is truly an amazing shop.
It certainly is! I was just there with a friend yesterday, and we had a blast.
Scent Bar’s scents are arranged primarily by category ie: Vetiver, woods, chypres etc which I found weird at first but actually less overwhelming than looking blankly at an entire line and trying to test them all. They were also pretty helpful when I was there. I’ve made most if my in-person purchases there and I don’t even live in LA. Hard to find stuff I can think of would be NV, Lubin, April Aromatics, Parfums d’Empire, I think Parfumerie Generale, Vero Profumo. Hope this helps!
I would also look at their selection online and see if there are any perfumes you absolutely want to smell since you’re making a special trip. If that is the case, I would call in advance and make sure they have them in store for you when you come. They sell so many, but they can’t fit them all in the boutique itself, so they recommend calling to let them know to have the bottle in the store you’d like to sniff. It would really be unfortunate if you wanted something and they didn’t have the bottle for you!
Agree. Don’t be shy about asking for samples either. Also, if you’re feeling stressed, I’d recommend soaking in the Beverly Hot Springs which is less than a couple of miles from Scent Bar
Mitzah = Dior not YSL… duh. One perfume conundrum solved.
🙂
Mohur Extrait is Limited Edition and that bottle is GORGEOUS! I am still managing with a decant but I may be triggering a buy at some point soon!
I have never been to Scent Bar so I hope to live vicariously through your experience. Could you go there twice during your trip? That should help alleviate olfactory fatigue.
Shalimar today. Perfect opulence to push against the freezing weather. I find it’s best in the cold.
You smell lovely. I adore Shalimar. Stay warm
Yes, perfect for the freezing cold.
Bois des Iles for this windy, rainy morning. Comforting, while being sophisticated and inoffensive enough for my morning meeting.
My SOTD is Knot by Bottega Veneta. For me, this fragrance was love at first sniff. I actually have a FB of this and don’t wear it nearly as much as I should. This fragrance actually goes well with fall weather. The crisp air makes it more invigorating in my opinion.
This is a good one.
I have to tell you that I tried Misia and Jasmine Rouge. Misia smelled too much like Love, Chloe to me so I decided not to purchase that, but I did like it. I really like 31 Rue Cambon from that line though so am contemplating purchasing a FB. Unfortunately, TF Jasmine Rouge “turned” on me. I was so hoping I would like that one. I have found that Tom Ford scents do not seem to do well for me, but that is ok since I have several other scents to choose from.
It’s funny, I bought a decant of Bottega Veneta when it first came out, certain that I would love it, but did not care for it at all. Last week, I was noticing great sillage from a friend and asked what perfume she was wearing. It turned out to be Bottega Veneta!
I wonder if it’s a question of distance, i.e., that I was huffing my wrist, and it needs to expand into sillage to be fully appreciated? Some perfumes are like that. Of course, it could be skin or any number of other variables.
It’s 11:42 am and I realize I forgot to put on any fragrance today! Someone needs to make a fragrance called Crazy Day, and I’d be wearing it today!
Hope your day calms down a bit. Anyway, I’ve applied enough perfume for both of us today (oops!)
Thanks! What are we wearing?
Oh I’ve worn that one, Crazy Day. It smells like coffee spilled on wool and green tea scented disinfectant wipes (from mopping up the cup holder area in my car).
😉 😉
I have the day off, so layering Atlas Mountain Rose body butter with Parfum Sacre. I just completed a drawing and it’s up on the easel ready to become a painting. It’s a beautiful sunny cold day so I’m off to Blicks to get stuff on my studio shopping list.
What a great day!
I decided on Pear + Olive today and it is smelling so good!
Oooh, I bet that’s nice in this weather.
It’s Chergui for me. Warm and comforting on this blustery day.
lovely
oh, you smell fantastic!!
You smell fantastic!
Sampling Volnay Perlerette and finding it very similar to Chanel 28 La Pausa. The opening wasn’t nearly as nice as La Pausa but now it’s settled down to a nice, rich lavender.
Noir Epices today.
Vinty Samsara day 2! Really loving it. And I think it’ll fit nicely for our theater outing tonight.
Of course I think you smell divine!
I think later on when this fragrance wears off I will put some Samsara on.
Have a wonderful time at the theater!
Thanks! May need to seek out another mini at this rate. I think I over applied a bit today. Maybe you can smell me from where you are 😉 Sorry about your night last night. I know that feeling, although my reflux isn’t pregnancy related(no kids) It’s been more of a long-term relationship.
Cuir de lancome today, lovely with my vintage patterned liberty wool shawl and navy and burgundy checked APC blouse, fun and beautiful clothes and perfume make cold, blustery grey weather so much more appealing!
Sounds like a perfect scent-outfit combination!
Thanks!, it cheered me up on a miserable day.
Sounds beautiful. It’s the getting out of bed, thinking about what to wear and getting dressed on a grey day part that trips me up.
Hee hee, sometimes i can’t be bothered, but mostly wearing something colourful cheer’s me up.
SOTD is YSL Rive Gauche from a sample. I’m sure its the reformulation – I’ve never smelled the original but even this version is nice.
Everyone remember the mystery smell in my house last month? Well, today we discovered that it was the chest freezer that my darling hubby had part of a woodworking project sitting on. I have been complaining that I needed to access the freezer for some time and he finally moved the project this morning. He had knocked the plug out of the wall. Oddly enough, the house didn’t smell that bad when we got here. I’m not going to kill him, no really… probably…maybe.
On top of that, some of my important luggage didn’t get in the car yesterday, so I have a 600 mile round trip drive to retrieve it. We’re going back next week anyway, but it contains my glasses, contacts, medications, and nightguard, so unless I want to be blind, toothless, and covered in hives I’ve got to go get it. I’m wearing No. 5 in the hopes that it can eventually get the smell of two month old rotten meat out of my brain.
That’s hoooorible. Are you tossing the freezer?
I hope you can treat yourself to a really great audio book for your luggage retrieval trip…
From here, you smell lovely! Elegant and in control.
The freezer is almost new, so we’re trying to salvage it out of native stubbornness. I’m pretty sure it’s toast though.
The thing that’s making me sick is that there was about 150 pounds of good Axis doe venison, two hams, and 25 pounds of bacon that is only available in September. I’m glad I didn’t stop yesterday at the processors to pick up the whitetail venison as I had planned.
We have no internet so no new audiobooks for me, but I do have some good ones already. I’m thinking Wodehouse should do.
Oh that is depressing. When Hurricane Isabel hit DC many moons ago we lost power for over a week…everyone on our street set up massive BBQs and we all cooked through much of our frozen fish and meat until we couldn’t do it any more. We city slickers had nothing remotely close to Axis venison, but I recall my husband bitterly tossing several soggy Omaha steaks that had been a gift from his parents. But to just lose it entirely–I am very sorry.
You have a fantastic scented way of coping!
The enormous freezer in my dad’s garage conked out, but it took him a while to figure that out. While he was in the midst of removing months-old rotting meat, he also retrieved a wool shawl of my mom’s that had been in there (to kill off moths). He asked me if I wanted to keep that. Uh, no. I’ll stick with the non-scented ring I inherited and the woolies I have at home.
Ugh! You are due for some very good luck after this!
Oh man! Try to not to kill your husband. They are useful sometimes
🙂
Oh dear. OH dear dear dear.
I hope it gets better. And yes, do try not to murder the husband even a tiny little bit. I hear prison smells terrible.
I quite like him so he’s safe. It helps that we found that the GFI outlet had tripped last week, so I might have had to clean out two week old meat anyway.
Yowza – you should let him know that he needs to make up for the smell, preferably with something on your wish list.
Sorry to hear about your luggage o.O perhaps you need a glass of wine too. And a travel perfume. Good luck!
Oxy clean and sunshine and fresh air will eliminate the odor. This happened in my household some time ago. If you have the ability to let it air somewhere and keep applying a paste of oxy clean, which I prefer over liquid bleach, and wiping that out it is possible to resurrect your freezer. Good luck!
Good idea. Hadn’t thought of bleach paste. It’s in the driveway, making our yard look super-posh 😉 Assuming nobody steals it, I plan to air it out until the weather stops cooperating.
Oh, how frustrating. I’m so sorry. Burning coffee grounds gets rid of the smell of death, so it might work for rotten meat as well.
I’ll try that too!
I have a flu, but I can smell and welcomed Bas de Soie after seeing the doctor this morning. My rusty French thinks this is Under/Beneath the Silk. Is that close? I love it.
I’d go with “silk stockings”, although sometimes I call it “silk socks” to be silly.
Merci to both of you.
Close – it means silk stockings.
So ‘bas collants’ would be ‘sticky stockings’? 😀 It’s been ages last time I was in France.
I have only a brief, passing acquaintance with France, but I’m a good friend of Google Translate, and that’s also the meaning I remembered from the reviews.
Feeling flatter than a pancake this morning…a sure sign that I have spent too many days housebound, in my own company. Will put on a dab of L’Instant and take my editing into town, for an hour or two. When my son was young I used to escape on Saturdays and find a quiet spot in the museum, where I would write.
That sounds like a good plan. Maybe you can find a cafe where you can observe, but not be disturbed by, the parade of interesting humanity around you. Maybe the cafe will have a cat notable for his great composure and dignity, who will bestow the honour of his company on you while you work. Perhaps your elevenses will be an excellent latte and a slice of spiced apple cake…work well.
Inspired by yesterday’s good-smelling people, I’m wearing 24 Faubourg this morning for an exciting day cleaning out the gutters. The recent storm knocked almost all the leaves off the tree, and today looks like a good day to be outdoors.
Wearing Femininite du Bois again from a sample. Might need a decant….
Hello, NSTites everywhere. This morning has arrived cold and rainy, with a mean, cutting little wind blowing, and I’ve turned my face towards my gourmands and warm woods. I bought Arabie the other day, and I very much like its combination of fruits and spices with a touch of sweat and clean camel, but I think that I want something sweeter. Or tougher, even. I’m being interviewed later on by a dear man who never, ever blinks, and I find it somewhat disconcerting to be the rabbit in his cross-hairs, so to speak. So, Black Cashmere, I think. It will settle into my skin warmly and remind me that I am in charge. Well, sort of in charge. Whatever happens, BC will help.
Oh, gosh, my eyes hurt just thinking about that! Black Cashmere is an inspired choice.
It’s an odd habit to develop, isn’t it? Not blinking, I mean. The first time I encountered him, I was madly uncomfortable–if I glanced away, it seemed to signal a weakness; not blinking felt as though I was challenging him. ..these days, I’m as used to him as I will ever be, and actually like him very much indeed, but his gaze is definitely unsettling, even now.
It can’t be good for the eyes, which would get too dry. I don’t think it could be just a habit, but rather something to do with the nerves or muscles or such that keeps him from blinking. No way to get used to something so unnatural; we must find it unsettling because of some deep, instinctive protective response, the way certain odors are universally alarming because the chemical compounds arise from decomposition.
Mmmm, Black Cashmere.
I know! Black Cashmere! I have to say this myself, ‘cos the dear one has already left for work and Dakkie doesn’t offer opinions much: I smell WONDERFUL! The Auckland CBD should be grateful to me for improving its general ambience today!
Hey, did I miss the post-mortem on the MIL visit? Apparently I am dealing with my own impending visit by eating as much as I can… Errr maybe if I am big enough, I will just scare the meanness out of them? Arriving huge and floating in a cloud of Ylang 49…. yup. That is my plan so far. Ooooo I’ll show ’em.
I didn’t really do a post mortem, Oakland. Too dispirited, frankly. I dealt with the usual “You-didn’t-give-my-son-any-children” thing by gritting my teeth like billy-oh, refused to be drawn on why we haven’t bought her a “nicer” house to live in (admittedly, it does need re-decorating!), then, before I lost my temper, I left and went into town to see a couple of my doctoral students who had driven over from Palmerston North. I didn’t go back — the dear man, may his shadow never fade, took over after that. I have no frame of reference for processing this stuff at all, so I don’t try any longer.
I like your approach though: I’m a bit more than medium height and she is short, so maybe I should practise looming over her, assisted by a cloud of the Elephant.
Sigh. Your students sound lovely. I’m bringing work, which is sort of the same thing… except I’ll still be able to hear doors slamming…
Pepper spray? Just a thought.
Pepper spray! It’s a good thought. In the past, I’ve had fantasies about flame throwers. Just quite little ones…
Oooohh…that’s an intriguing idea. Psychological warfare, using your height to imply a threat. I’d investigate subtle ways to do that if I were you.
I am wearing or should I say I was wearing SL Une voix noire because it is completely gone after maybe 2 hours. I have never had a SL scent that is as fleeting as this is. I am really regretting this purchase.
Sorry to hear that ;( Reinforces my belief in a “sample first” policy with bottles over $50.
Also, try it on clothes or over a lotion (or even mixed with lotion). It might last longer. Good luck!
I will try it on clothes and see if it will last longer. I should have sampled first before buying.
That is too bad. I have that relationship with my bottle of En Passant. I don’t think of what it cost, and reapply it often when I wear it. I figure, better to use it up fast and enjoy it, than not… and it is such a pretty (albeit fleeting!) scent.
TF Fleur de Chine. I am a bit enamored of this lately – may need to get a decant of this, and maybe Shanghai Lily while I’m at it.
I think today is the day I am going to start knitting again. I took a two year break, mostly because I was uninspired and had little patience. Feeling very excited, starting a lace scarf for my mom in a deep burgundy color 🙂
I have sample of Fleur that I have been trying and I like it but I am not sure its FB worthy yet. It reminds me of another fragrance and I haven’t figured it out.
I think it is similar to Rochas Femme, but maybe a bit softer. I like both!
What a beautiful kitty! Something about it reminds me of that famous black and white photo blending a cat’s face with a woman’s. It could be a man’s face in this case.
No 5 EDC. Lovely starchy aldehydes. Sort of oversprayed methinks which is not uncommon *cough*.
Also sampled Poiver Piquant on my way home. It shares a common note – bitter greens – with Ostara, although it’s a lot more pronounced in Ostara. I’ll be damned if I can pick out what it could be. Or it’s the white pepper somehow.
And then the pepper in PP reminded me of a good juicy 300grams rare steak. Must have one of those sooner rather than later. Mjam.
The drydown of PP = faint laundry musk . . . yippee.
Better though than Ostara mushrooming and suffocating me with its dry papery bits a few days ago.
Poivre Piquant is also by Duchaufour (you may have known this but I didn’t!). Okay. It is now on my “to sample” list!!
Running out the door this morning I managed to spritz on some No. 19. The all-afternoon meeting yesterday ended with cake, so it could have been worse. Thanks to everyone who recommended some 21C Big Roses – will let you know if the colleague selects any of them.
Cake! And interested to hear what your friend winds up liking.
Flying to Sweden (they have just raised the security alert level…) for work and continuing my French week with Bandit. Very happy with my choice. Have brought several samples with me for tomorrow and on Friday.
Bandit! Good for you! You smell wonderful.
Be safe.
Bandit is up to this. I hope you enjoy the trip in spite of everything.
I like your instinctive response of French perfume week. I only spent two days there in the early 1980s, so I have no real sense of what is French, beyond the general fact that 98 percent of the perfumes I own are French, in one way or another. One can’t go wrong with Chanel, I assume, so I’m following your lead with Chanel 31 de Cambon today.
Mitsouko! Seeing me through some ridiculous meetings. I concentrate so hard on not rolling my eyes, I probably look really weird in some other way.
I know these meetings! They must be a universal constant. Maybe the pained expression that results from not rolling our eyes is also a universal constant. Sometimes I wish I could pack all the sententious twits in the world into containers and ship them to a special island where they could be as sententious and self-aggrandising as they like without troubling the rest of us. The other day I was at an all-day planning meeting for a new degree where some random bloke described his job as “experience designer”. I asked….well, you can probably imagine what I asked, and I have to confess, I didn’t control my eye-rolls at his answers.
I used to have to attend loads of ridiculous meetings before I retired. I, too, am an eye-roller, but learned to plaster a politely interested look on my face. Meanwhile, I had a notepad in which I wrote rude comments about the proceedings and the speakers. Juvenile, but it kept me from injudicious outbursts. Divergent opinions were harshly punished in my former workplace.
At least your organisation was open about its requirement for uniformity. Here, the rhetoric is all about valuing diversity of thinking, etc, etc, but the practice of the organisation tends to be far different. My survival technique is the same as yours in principle, except that I doodle tiny complex patterns, starting with a koru (that’s an unfurling fern frond). When I get desperate (exam boards!) I also write scurrilous limericks…I am a child inside!
I have found a sneaky smile or an outright laugh very efficient in throwing people right off their pretentious pedestals. Works like a charm 😀
Chanel no 5 eau premiere, which is lovely as always, but having some occasional competition from the “cooling cucumber” deodorant that I swiped on. It’s. …interesting.
Happy Hump Day, to all y’all 🙂
SOTD = Nicolai Ambre Cashmere Intense
It’s turning out to be a French Perfume House Week!
This is sweet musky labdanum-amber IRIS goodness!
I haven’t yet tried it. When I was in Paris in September bottles weren’t yet available for sniffing. It sounds amazing, so I will try it, somehow.
Sounds amazing!
Tom Ford Sahara Noir for me today. Great sprayed on clothing, no staying power on my skin. I waited too long to get this and now it is difficult to find.
Wearing mostly Chanel this week. Monday was Sycomore, today is Coromandel (which is getting on my nerves, clearly wasn’t the right choice today, ah well).
Now that it’s well and truly fall here, I’ve turned on the fume-purchases-by-mail. Gonna have a lot to confess to Donatella, come January.
“well and truly fall…”
Oh, SO envious!
and don’t worry, Donaltella is VERY forgiving 😉
I’m wearing Bvlgari au The Bleu today. I bought it when I was visiting Disneyworld/ Epcot last week in the Italian gift shop.
Happy birthday to Mickey!
Continuing my exploration of new swapped samples, PG Indochine, which started pretty aggressively, but is near imperceptible 4ish hours later.
Love Indochine!! You may not smell it, but trust me, others do! and they all think you smell fabulous 😉
A bit of Mon Precieux Nectar for me today.
Beautiful choice. I almost bought a bottle when visiting NYC this summer. One day!
Very late to the party today wearing 31 Rue Cambon today.
Happy birthday, Mickey Mouse!!!!
SotD: Lolita Lempicka EDP…. which is very apropos for this auspicious day, lol.
Last minute post…Ginger Essence by Origins! The Ginger Gloss body oil and Essence spray are clean and fresh. Night to crawl into bed with…Night y’all! 🙂
Nice to crawl in bed with! Clumsy fingers! 🙂
Almost recovered from some serious cigarette smoke exposure over the weekend and Monday night, just put on SL Santal Blanc. Thanks, allgirlmafia. Hope your move is proceeding smoothly.
