Tuesday scent of the day 11/3

Posted by Robin on 3 November 2015 140 Comments

figs

Happy Tuesday, and happy National Fig Week! What fragrance are you wearing today?

I went with Imaginary Authors Yesterday Haze.

Reminder: this Friday, 11/6, will be Enabler Pin Friday: bestow a pin on someone who convinced you that you just had to try (or buy) a fragrance. And of course, wear the fragrance!

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I love fresh figs- yum yum. Sometimes the frozen ones at Trader Joe’s are not that bad either.
The last couple days I have been testing out the parfum and the EDP , the inspiration from the community project a few weeks ago for “slow-burn”. I noticed that a lot of people had Shalimar as their answer and I never really gave it a shot. The parfum and the EDP I automatically liked better then the EDT. I am trying to tell my wallet that the EDP is just as good as the parfum :-\

I love figs too, even the dried ones.

      Is your wallet listening?

When I lived in San Francisco a while back I remember going to the farmers market and buying fresh figs- it’s a treat

Like figs, but not in perfume for some reason. We’re having a string of stellar sunny & warm days here in Chicagoland. Yesterday at the park there was a lady with the most winning combo of dogs: a bulldog, golden retriever and cocker spaniel, bounding joyfully about. They were so cute! Keeping the cheerful vibe going, went with CSP’s Pamplemousse (can easily change my SOTD in a couple of hours too).

There’s a baby bulldog in my apartment building named Chunk. I can’t let him pass without petting his many, many face folds. I suspect his poor owners are a little sick of me, but he’s just tooooooo cute!

I’m with you on the figs – love to eat ’em, don’t like them in perfume.

And have seen SO many people drive up to the polling place today with a dog (or two. or three!) in the vehicle. Have seen an elegant Weimaraner, two cute Boston terriers, a Shih Tzu, two blueticks, a beagle, and several other dogs today.

Totally braindead tonight. This is shift 6 of 9 straight, and very late ones so getting to bed at about 3/4am. Dragging my feet til Saturday…
So even though I can smell myself I totally forgot what I was wearing. Had to think about it.. Bvlgari Jasmin Noir. It doesnt get much love but it’s such a comfort scent to me. It’s helping, I think..

SL Arabie. No figs, but dried fruit (obviously— it’s a Lutens) and tons of spices on a warm, resinous base. Sexy but unexpectedly subdued, in a good way.

Didn’t know about fig week. I’m wearing Cuir de Russie today, in it’s most glorious form, the extrait.

Is it glorious? And would that be new or vintage? I had a decant of the EDT (modern version, I’m quite sure) and found it completely underwhelming, not even in my top ten of leather scents (there were actually a couple of Demeters I liked better), but I am willing to believe that the extrait is wonderful and worth hunting down.

The modern extrait is worth hunting down and trying. It’s a lot better than the EDT, and I love the EDT.

New. Purchased 2 years ago. I happen to like the EDT a lot too, but it doesn’t make me feel weak at the knees like the parfum does. So worth trying at least.

I’m adding my tuppence worth to support the extrait as well, Pyramus. It’s just gorgeous; not a chicks-kick-butt leather like Bandit, just elegantly present, like a posy of gentle flowers carried a while in a soft leather-lined hand-bag until the flowers smell of leather, and the bag of flowers. Seamlessly, perfectly done. I betcha you’ll love it!

I have only one fig perfume, the divine Neela Vemiere Ashoka. I’ll have to pull out my small bottle this week.

Today is a beautiful, sunny day in Chicago, so I’m taking a break from my heavier fall perfumes for some L’eau d’hiver. I have the travel bottle in my purse to reapply this fleeting beauty through the day.

The fig in Ashoka is creamy and comforting, almost to the point of smelling like coconut milk to my nose. (In a good way, even though I’m not fond of coconut.) I looked it up and the official notes are fig leaf and fig milk. I’d be interested to hear your thoughts when you sample it.

I’m wearing LADDM today and feeling pretty fabulous (which is nice after being so incredibly sleep deprived and cranky yesterday).

I had dinner with my parents last night and my mother–who generally hates scents–mentioned that she wouldn’t mind if I wanted to get her a second(!) decant of a particular scent she wore as a teen. That feels like a strangely large victory.

Strangely enough, this lady who gets headaches from my conditioner and lotion–and who I don’t ever remember wearing fragrance when I was a kid–was thrilled when I said I could give her decants of Bal a Versailles and Faberge Tigress for Christmas. Apparently she needs a refill on Tigress already!

I’m always entertained and/or amused by the topics that come up as national or international day/week this & that, Robin! I wore MH’s Figue Ameure some years ago & was practically mugged by the receptionist each time I visited her office to pick up/send courier packages! I relented in the end & gave her the bottle with a fairly serious quantity of juice remaining – she was thrilled!

Up for some blasphemy today, so I layered Shalimar parfum over Molecule 01. It’s interesting to add a chemical that wasn’t available in the 1920’s to something so iconic.
Not an imorovement of course, but not bad either.

When I put my nose right up to it, I don’t like it that much, but over the course of the morning, I got some really nice floral whiffs when moving my arms around. I don’t think this is going to be the Chanel for me, but I’ll definitely finish the sample.

I have yet to find a fig scent other than Womanity that I actually like. They all smell like mildew to me. On the other hand, I love fresh figs. My sister-in-law has a huge fig tree growing in her front yard, and used to serve fresh figs with a lemon yogurt to dip them. Yum. SOTD is Gucci Guilty.

Ditto! The only fig I seem to enjoy is Womanity, and honestly, I do not know that I’d know it was a fig scent if I hadn’t been told.

I too love fresh figs, but the scents are frequently too milky mixed with generic skin of fruit for me to wear as perfume. Sometimes I like the scent in soaps, because it smells clean to me without all the modern muskiness of “CLEAN.”

Since I am not much of a fig fan, this week I am going to work through small samples that have squeezed themselves into the tiny corners and backs of perfume boxes. This morning I am trying Keiko Mecheri’s Bois De Santal (Thank you Merrily!!) The good news is that a tiny .5 ml sample is plenty to test this fragrance… It is primarily a rose scent to me—and I am so pleased with myself for figuring out what it reminds me of–Tresor! The first 10 seconds are clearly sandalwood, but the next half hour is an acoustic variation on Tresor (not as headachey)… Now it is calming down again and I am getting woods with my rose, and even a little fruitiness (not listed in the notes)…. If you ever wanted to try a less bombastic Tresor, this might be it…

Wearing Jo Malone Birch & Black Pepper, because I was looking for a scent that would be traditionally British/English, but modern and a bit rock’n’roll at the same time. B&BP is a pretty good fit and I like it – it’s one of the more interesting scents from Jo Malone (I think).

I’m wearing Aftelier Vanilla Smoke—just received the sample yesterday and I will definitely be buying this one in one form or another. It’s gorgeous, although not (to me, at least) tremendously smoky. I got samples of the parfum and the EdP, and the smokiness seems a little more noticeable in the EdP.

I love it so far. It’s a very creamy scent, if that makes sense. There is a lot more smoke and wood as it dries down. I resampled CB I Hate Perfume 7 Billion Hearts the other day and it is nowhere nearly as bitter-smoky as that.

Oh, good to know! I had a teensy decant of 7 Billion and did like it but no where near enough to get a FB. I love creamy scents so I really need to just order a sample of this. Thanks????

Not with the fig program today. It’s another scorcher here and I forgot to spritz before I left this morning to run errands. Just got home and doused myself in Guerlain Vetiver. Feeling somewhat refreshed and rejuvinated now 😀

Good morning all, from a dreary, rain-soaked Auckland. It’s cold enough today for me to wearing a long-sleeved linen jumper and heavier jeans. Summer is very dilatory about getting underway this year. Setting aside my moans about the weather, I just want to say that I find it absurdly charming that we live in a world where someone has declared a national fig week! I’ve been sitting here eating my breakfast and smiling about it, and I have no idea why it caught my fancy more than the other celebratory days Robin has reminded us of. However, delightful though figs are in all their forms, including perfume, I’m wearing Bandit, and the raw green and leather are reaching out into the whole apartment. My husband doesn’t like this one much at all, but he RESPECTS it. He just asked me what my diary holds today, thoughtfully kissed the top of my head, and advised me to take it easy. Huh! Hey, have a wonderfully fragrant day, NST. Enjoy all that you do….I’m going to, just see if I don’t!

Do you think so? I rather thought they were having a revival! They always seem to be featured on these interminable cooking programmes, roasted, drizzled with honey and served with clotted cream or something, or draped glamorously with prosciutto. I like them raw and warm from the tree, but however they come, I’m with you about supporting figs. Up the fig! Figs forever!

How I wish figgin’ Fall would be here to stay, but No! the temps are supposed to go up to the seventies the next few days. Ugh. That said, I love fresh figs. For a quick fig fix, peel fig, split in half, drop a dollop of balsamic vinegar (the concentrated type that comes in a squueze bottle), on the inner part of the fig, let sit for 15 minutes or so and top with parmesan cheese shavings (I’m lazy — I use the pre-shaved version). If you’re feeling slightly more ambitious, you can wrap the fig halves with paper-thin slices of prosciutto. Yum!

Hermes Un Jardin Mediteranee ….love this scent. I also find this is a great ‘travel scent’ : one that I take everywhere I go as it is very adaptable, wearable and can lift a drab city location or add sparkle to a family visit…the type of family visit where you do several trips to the dump (waste centre?) for your mum.

I’ve got a visit to my mother-in-law coming up: I’ll try UJM to see if it helps. It’s completely mad that after all these years, I still dread The Visits.

I feel your pain. For me, it is my sister-in-law. I’ve tried everything from showering her with gifts and praises to blocking out all her snarkiness… but she still gets under my skin–even after nearly 20 years! (And don’t even get me started on all the great bottles of perfume I have gotten her over the years!)

Yep, the in-law relationships can be tough and difficult to negotiate. I smile and say little, but eventually, I stop smiling. I still say little, but my mood gets grim. Actually, I might need something stronger than UJM, now I come to think of the visit objectively! Might be a day for Femme, and bother the consequences!

I don’t think I have much figgy perfume, the closest I can think of is Ninfeo Mio, with fig leaves. It doesn’t seem quite right for the drab day (Wellington seems to be much like Waterdragon’s Auckland), but this might be a day to go with perfume that males me think of the weather I wish we were having.

    SOTD = Chanel No.19 EDP

i’m awarding enabler pins to Marjorie Rose, mals and AnnS. It was a “Limited Edition” comment in a Lazy Weekend Poll dialogue circa February 2015 amongst the three of them that prompted me to seek this out. It became my birthday present from me to me and joined the ranks of my all time favorites in many categories.

Didn’t know about Fig week but I love Yesterday Haze, wore it last night. I love figs too, fresh, dry, preserves etc. We went to Philadelphia in August and I found some fresh figs at the Reading Market, they were so good, we never get them here in the Midwest.

Wearing Commes des Garcons 2 today, the one with the ink. I can add it to my long list of perfumes that smell so great,I don’t know why I don’t wear them more often.

It’s Election Day, and I am taking an hour break from standing at the polls handing out election information for my husband who is running for our county board of supervisors. So tired.

Chanel NO. 19 vintage edt today… for backbone. So far, everybody has been pleasant, even if I know they’re voting the other direction.

I don’t know why I can’t stand fig notes in perfume. I love to eat figs. But there is something impossibly bitter about fig notes (and this from someone who digs notes like myrrh and galbanum, usually noted as smelling bitter) – I guess the bitterness of fig leaf is just not “my” kind of bitter.

I didn’t realize it was fig week.. I should’ve worn Philosykos or something.. maybe tomorrow. I’m wearing CDG Kyoto today, and now I’m wondering if Philosykos and Kyoto would layer together..

Also fig-related: I have a recipe in a book on liqueurs that my friends gave me for Christmas last year that is brandy infused with dried figs, honey and chai tea, and it’s amazing.

As far as I know, I have nothing that even resembles fig in a perfume. I wore Narciso edp all day and switched to Lou Lou tonight. Every time I wear Lou Lou I think my gosh, I should wear this everyday, but then I don’t. really, depends on my mood, tonight,I needed something a little bad ass and a little sexy. hope it works.

There is a fig tree on one of my walking routes and I always surreptitiously stop to break off a piece of leaf because the sap smells fantastic, much better than either Philosykos or Premier Figuier.

I’m testing Aftelier Fig again. It doesn’t really smell like fig to me but rather some kind of honey or dried fruit, oatmeal and nut bar. And a big dollop of gusset. It’s a strange experience. 😉

Wearing Memoirs of a Trespasser. Today is the 3rd day of rain we’ve had in what was to be a 4 day rainy stretch. But if I glimpsed the TV weather correctly, looks like they’ve added rain to 4 of the next 5 days. If I’m gonna wear fall scents, I guess I’ll have to reimagine what fall looks like.
