Thursday scent of the day 10/29

Posted by Robin on 29 October 2015 152 Comments

Where the fairies live

Happy Internet Day! Do tell us what fragrance you're wearing.

I'm in Sonoma Scent Studio Forest Walk.

Reminder: tomorrow will be the Halloween Special: wear the fragrance that would match your fantasy Halloween costume (or your real Halloween costume, or one you've worn in the past).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

In Shalimar ode a la vanille flanker today..such a beautiful scent. Last weeks community project inspired me to give the original Shalimar a chance.
Yesterday I really enjoyed wearing Samsara-one dab of the perfume lasted all day until the evening. I don’t know why I don’t reach for this more often.

Narciso edp this morn, then it got too warm for it so switched to Bois d’Encens before work. I do like it but find it a bit too dry and austere usually, so I tend to either layer it with a vanilla in cooler weather or more often wear AG Encens Flamboyant instead.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I really need to order a sample set from her. Even if I don’t like any, which seems unlikely, anyone who names stuff for their cat deserves a few of my pennies.

Testing L’Artisan’s Saffran Troublant today. It’s lovely! I’m finding that it does not project very far. I have to put my nose tight up to my wrist to smell it. Beautiful though.

Yep. It’s fading fast at the 3-hour mark. Pity. I left my decant at home, so I guess I’ll be topping off with something from my on-the-go stash at lunchtime. JM Cardamom & Mimosa, most likely… or maybe Parfum de Therese… hmmm.

I was always paranoid about wearing PG Cuir Venenum because of LT’s description in The Guide:

“At the risk of putting off perfume lovers with preconceived ideas, I shall describe it as the wonderful aroma you get when you first bring your nose to a full glass of top-notch Belgian beer (Orval, Leffe) before drinking: a rich, floral, honeyed, bitter, mealy accord.”

I tried Orval and can say that LT was right. Finally, I asked a friend to sniff my wrist to see if it smelled like I’d been drinking, and she said no, it just smelled great. So it might be worth checking.

Tried a new sample of NV Pinchola, but no love there for me! Something too buttery turns my stomach – I have had this reaction to another perfume that I thought I would love – Memo Latin Quartier comes to mind. Have to figure out what that ingredient is. so, I oversprayed generously with Rose Musc, which can drowned out anything. So far, my co-workers have not commented… LOL!

SOTD is Naomi Goodsir’s Or du Serail, and it made me realize that my fantasy Halloween costume (mix of Lauren Bacall and Jessica Rabbit) is actually Ginger from Gilligan’s Island! Not that I have a prayer of carrying THAT off. But … fantasy, right? Her perfume would definitely be tropical and a little bit coconut-y. Not sure where the tobacco is coming from, though – maybe Mr. Howell?

Forest walk sounds lovely. I sampled two piney scents this week that didn’t work for me (SL Fille en Aguille and OJ Woman) but I like the idea of them.

Today I’m in Dior Gris Montaigne. I’m on my second 3ml decant. If I go through this one fast, maybe I’ll get…a 15 ml decant. A FB is so big. :)

Not wearing it today, but Pixel sent me a sample of Yatagan (Caron) and I wore it the other day. I thought it was a lovely, dry, woody pine scent. It would fit in many niche perfumers’ repertoires.

The 3x15ml explorer set is a very good deal, and would be more than enough of LADDM to last a person a while–plus you get 2 other scents. (Or go in on a split). This could be a more short term goal ;-)

Was wearing Ta’if by Ormonde Jayne and then my J. Crew No. 31 rollerball arrived (when the price goes down to $4.99, it’s time to buy, whether you’ve smelled it or not) and in the first few minutes, I’m loving it. Like a plummy, rosy cocktail right now. Definitely sweet, but the kind of sweet I can get into.

This is probably what happens when your skin takes everything into the dry down in minutes – it went from a good sweetness with the sparkle of some alcoholic beverage to it to a bit too sweet for my usual taste.

When I first tried 31 and 57 last year, I thought they were too sweet. I actually ended up getting more tolerant of the sweetness, though, and now own both. Either way, though, for $4.99, it’s no enormous loss if it never ends up working out. (And I’m jealous of that price!)

I really think just a bit of something bright (like a gin note) might freshen it up a bit. Maybe I’ll do an experiment if I can track down a “gin” scented oil.

        • Lindaloo says:
          29 October 2015 at 1:09 pm

To add the “gin” note how about Juniper Berry and/or Lime essential oils. (Just watch out that whatever skin you put lime on doesn’t get exposed to the sun — nasty sunburns possible from citrus oils.I once got “bergamot burns” from a perfume dabbed on each side of my neck. )

I was thinking about Juniper, but I don’t think I have that yet. There’s a good place called Save on Scents where I ordered a lot of fairly decent (synthetic) oils when I was in my perfume class, and maybe I’ll see if they have a juniper or gin one. No idea why I’m fixating on it so much :)

          • Lindaloo says:
            29 October 2015 at 2:42 pm

Just to continue the fixation: Demeter makes a “Gin and Tonic.” Probably doesn’t last long, but it’s pretty cheap to re-spray. :-)

Anikky, when I was in Sevilla in the late 1990s, some shops had a Sevilla-themed perfume that had been created for Seville Expo 92. I found it strange at the time, which I now realize was due to my lack of previous exposure to the distinctive scent of orange blossom. Since I’ve learned to love that note, I’ve often wondered if they still made it, and if I’d like it now.

Annikky, I do hope you see this, because I want to thank you for a couple of book recommendations I found on your blog. Well, actually, first of all, thank you for the blog–I found my way to it and have had lots of fun in the last couple of days reading your opinions on life, the universe and every little thing. Anyway, I bought and enjoyed The Emperor’s Soul and Robert Jackson Bennett’s City of Stairs, and will keep returning to your list to see what I can see. Both of these are good writers– they turn a tidy sentence, always a good place to begin appreciation.

Dear waterdragon, thank you for the kind words, I’m very glad you’ve found something to enjoy. But, but, but – I’m especially glad that you liked these two books, as they are not exactly mainstream (and because I love them myself, of course). If you can do Science Fiction, I highly recommend Ann Leckie’s Ancillary Justice as well.

SOTD is SSS Champagne de Bois – just a dab on my throat. It is so rich! It’s bizarrely warm here today so to lighten things up a bit, I layered some of the Diptyque Essences Incensees Jasmine on my wrists. CdB and the Jasmine play very nicely together.

Piney forest here too, with Fille en Aiguilles, to honour the Blair Witch – a film I considered highly entertaining when it premiered, being a camper myself. I find the opening sharp, but the dry down is just lovely.

Also much warmer out than I expected. Was craving cozy so SOTD is Reminiscence Tonka. It fits the cozy bill with its tonka and honey but better for cooler weather, methinks. Also testing out Vero Profumo Rubj on my hand which I’m liking. Glad it’s just my hand because it’s fairly sweaty on me.
I love Forest Walk. One of my the few fir-centric scents that doesn’t read as Xmas candle or cleaning products to me.

Internet Day! The one day that I could in good conscience dedicate all day to roaming the internet, and I have lots to do. Perhaps I could say I celebrated early by closely following the story of the runaway Aberdeen Aerostat yesterday.

    Favorite photo:

And the blimp’s own twitter account:

No word on the blimp’s SOTD. What perfume would YOU wear while making your great escape?

        Aha! Yes!

If the Aberdeen Aerostat ever signs up for the NST Monday Mail column, I think we could confidently recommend the original “’nomad’ object bottle… conceived for voyages and symbolic of movement.” (Hermes website)

Your comment about an apocalypse amused me, and reminded me of my dear mama. I recall that one of the first, and therefore most vivid, things she ever taught me about surviving was this nugget of wisdom: “Dear, if there is another war, stockpile elastic.” I gather that she had to manage without knicker elastic for a couple of years, and that wooden buttons were always uncomfortable, no matter how small or flat. I can see how I might well feel prepared to cope with anything, knowing I had several packets of elastic and a spare bottle of Chergui!

Cedre by Serge Lutens. I blind bought it yesterday after a few drinks at a discount. Top note to my brain is strawberry. Then it reminds me of original Feminite du Bois (cedarwoord) although it’s allot sweeter. I’m not really into ‘sweet’ but I like tuberose and Cedre’s a nice addition in that regard. Methinks I like it. It could be a bit thicker, but you can’t have everything.

And then I added Shalimar on top just so to get smokey for the evening.

Ya it’s a pity you can’t edit posts. I always write ridiculously long sentences and look at them afterward thinking, erm, that’s not really clear now is it?

Did I have a few drinks at a discount and then buy perfume or what? Did the man who hit the woman with an umbrella hit the woman with an umbrella?

Good morning, everyone. I’m still at home, and loving it. I’m not able to work at a computer for long, but I’m not sick at all, so I feel the way I used to when I truanted as a kid: 1% guilty; 89% free and indifferent to anyone’s opinions; 10% curious as to the shape and delivery style of the inevitable retribution. Anyway, I decided that Bill Blass Nude would be a good scent to skive in, and here I am, wafting a gentle cloud of soft goldenness. Love it!

Wow, I just realized how long it’s been since I wore BB Nude. Time to rectify that. It’s a lovely autumn day here and I don’t feel like wearing anything at all demanding. Apt comparison, and I hope you escape any sort of retribution.

Well, I’m officially on sick leave, of which I have nearly two hundred days accrued, so there won’t be retribution, but I have a big project on, and LOTS of ordinary stuff, so I have this sense of really and truly bunking. But the computer screen still flickers unpleasantly at the edges of my vision, like strobe lighting on a tiny scale, so I’m not going to push myself. Monday will do.

Enjoy BB Nude. It is very pretty and soft: a perfume for lounging in, I always think. It’s another one I acquired unsniffed on the strength of excellent NST reviews, this time from Angela, I think.

Me, too – I bought it unsniffed after reading that review and frequent positive references by NST commenters.

Several of the happiest days of my life occurred when I was remanded to bed rest with prescription pain killers following dental surgery. ;-) I was exceptionally overworked in those days, and that was when I finally had time to read Denyse Beaulieu’s book, The Perfume Lover.

They will never thank you for not using all of your sick leave, or apologize if you get out of shape or develop high blood pressure from too much sitting or stress. It sounds like you care about your work, too, and you are wise to put your health and wellbeing first.

Applied Timbuktu early this morning, but looking forward to a wrist to wrist comparison of Houbigant’s Orangers en Fleurs (my decant arrived yesterday) and Hanbury. It is going to be a citrus and orange blossom extravanza!! (Orange blossom-phobes beware…!)

You know, I try and try to love orange blossom in perfume, but I just don’t. I gave away my bottle of Seville a L’Aube; I wanted to like Knot, but I didn’t. Maybe it’s because I grew up with smell of the real thing in every backyard on our street, and nothing bottled comes close? Dunno, but I thought being a perfumista (for I now tentatively use that label) would have made me more open-minded to all notes, but it’s not happening.

I’m not very fond of proper Orange blossom fragrances. I do like it in a few colognes. And no it doesn’t come close at all to the real deal, but neither do rose perfumes and I adore those.

Queen of the Bees, different from being a Queen Bee? I’d love to see you!

We didn’t traditionally celebrate Halloween in A-NZ–it’s just beginning to take off now because of the spread of all forms of popular culture– so I won’t be dressing up, but I rather wish I could! My think I’d choose an outfit I could swagger about in, but I’ve got no imagination today, and can’t even begin to think what it might be.

Help! I need a fragrance intervention! I see that Tom Ford Sahara Noir has been discontinued. It is the most well behaved frankincense and myrrh perfume that I know of. I have several things in my collection that are similar but less well behaved v like Anubis and Olympic Orchids Dev 1. Do I just go ahead and purchase the Sahara Noir or does someone more sensible assure me that there is something similar and similarly priced?

I’m wearing a spritz of Pacifica French Lilac today, that I got from a tester at Whole Foods this morning. Nice but I don’t think I need it.

I was really craving Malibu Lemon Blossom for some reason. I didn’t have it, so I thought this sounded like an excuse to get breakfast tacos at Whole Foods this morning. The only tester out was the lilac, so I bought the lemon blossom roll-on (the Whole Foods by my office seems to have really reduced the amount of Pacifica fragrances they’re carrying).
