Tuesday scent of the day 10/27

Posted by Robin on 27 October 2015 182 Comments

Ministry of Silly Walks

Happy Tuesday, and happy birthday to John Cleese! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Comme des Garçons + Pharrell Williams Girl.

Reminder: this Friday, 10/30, will be the Halloween Special: wear the fragrance that would match your fantasy Halloween costume (or your real Halloween costume, or one you've worn in the past).

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

My favourite comedian! I’m wearing ELd’O Rien. Which is wonderful.
Funnily enough I watched a bit of the documentary last night about Python’s O2 show. It was very interesting as well as being very funny.

They have better sketches, but Cycling Race has a special place in my heart: I remember watching this when in the university, it was my first MP episode and when this bit came on, I was sold forever:

Trench (John Cleese): (Standing at roadside) Well something certainly is happening here at Tolworth roundabout, David. I can now see Picasso, he’s cycling down very hard towards the roundabout, he’s about 75-50 yards away and I can now see his painting… it’s an abstract… I can see some blue some purple and some little black oval shapes… I think I can see…

(A Pepperpot comes up and nudges him.)

Pepperpot (Michael Palin): That’s not Picasso – that’s Kandinsky.

Trench: (excited) Good lord, you’re right. It’s Kandinsky. Wassily Kandinsky, and who’s this here with him? It’s Braque. Georges Braque, the Cubist, painting a bird in flight over a cornfield and going very fast down the hill towards Kingston and… (cylists pass in front of him) Piet Mondrian – just behind, Piet Mondrian the Neo-Plasticist, and then a gap, then the main bunch, here they come, Chagall, Max Ernst, Miro, Dufy, Ben Nicholson, Jackson Pollock and Bernard Buffet making a break on the outside here, Brancusi’s going with him, so is Gericault, Ferdinand Leger, Delaunay, De Kooning, Kokoschka’s dropping back here by the look of it, and so’s Paul Klee dropping back a bit and, right at the back of this group, our very own Kurt Schwitters..

      Pepperpot: He’s German!

Trench: But as yet absolutely no sign of Pablo Picasso, and so from Tolworth roundabout back to the studio.

I can’t remember that particular sketch but it sounds briljant.
I think that my favourite MP sketch is probably Penguin on the telly. Favourite FT episode is The Psychiatrist.

Love that one. One of my favorites is The Cycling Tour. I’m convinced that Mr. Pither is somehow a caricature of my father (only without his snazzy rainbow cycling suspenders).
I’ve wondered if a Python encountered him on an early cycling trip, but it’s probably pure coincidence.

My scent of the day inspired by NST’rs. Last Friday’s community project reminded me that I need to break out my Shalimar Initial, so that’s on one wrist. And then I got a sample from another fellow NST of TF Venetian Bergamont that’s on another wrist. Someone yesterday commented they were wearing TF lipstick so I am as well –thanks for the inspiration

Trying out Chergui today. It’s not bowling me over so far. Lots of powdery sweetness… wishing for a bit more depth. I want to like it though. I’ll give it a few more wears for sure.

Chergui is very strange: it seems to change from wearing to wearing — sometimes it’s exactly what I want and sometimes I feel as if I made a mistake putting it on.

I can only dab it on, not spray, but it lasts all day and is such a complex tobacco/honey scent..

From my endless pool of samples, Tonkamande by Pafumerie Generale. Sweet but not overwhelmingly so, lots of almonds and baby powder: very nice but very reminiscent of Rahät Loukoum, which I prefer.

I am hankering for SL Cuir Mauresque but my little decant is long gone. I wish this was available here in the US but I believe is just comes in the bell jar. Too bad for me. It’s a grey and dreary day here and CM would be heaven!

Instead, because I had to got back to the dentist this morning I wore a very conservative single spritz of Un Bois Vanille. Sadly, it didn’t help with my dental anxieties.

Hope you all have a wonderful Tuesday, which means it’s almost hump day, which means the weekend is right around the corner! I am a very good pep talker :)

Yes, I have thought of that but am in such dire fear of liking that calm detached feeling TOO much…I think I am one of those people who puts a toe over the threshold and then suddenly the entire body follows. Back in my younger days, I really enjoyed clubbing because of the effect of alcohol. I’m quite sure I would be an alcoholic if I had grown up in a home where I saw alcohol used as a coping mechanism. Thanks for you well wishes, I do appreciate them. As they say, this too shall pass! :)

    Happy birthday, Mr. Cleese!

Wore my vintage Emeraude to bed last night and I smelled sooooo good when I got up. But I think I shall haul out the Mariella Burani for today.

I never see mention of it anymore (which is not all THAT surprising, it’s been d/c for several years), but I still love the stuff and can’t really say why. Hard to describe it, too: aldehydic, musky, powdery, soft, and yet none of that even adds up to how pleasant it is. I wore it to the bank last week and the teller leaned over to tell me how much she liked my perfume.

Totally unrelated to today’s topic, I have the opportunity to purchase a bottle of L’Arte de Gucci. It’s an EDT. Do you have a preference in strength or can you give me a comparison between strengths?

I have not smelled the edt. I only have the edp.

My vague vague memory of the comparison (can’t remember now where that was, although I think it might have been a discussion in comments, maybe on BdJ or the Posse) was that the edt was quieter and less rosy and most of the handful commenting preferred the edp.

I know that’s not really helpful, sorry. :(

Marielle Burani is exceptionally lovely and I wish I had a back up bottle of it! It has very happy memories for me. It could easily be a flanker for No 5 Eau Premiere (the original version), or the inspiration for what they did to No 5 to get to the EP formula! It is a very elegant and cheerful fragrance.

SOTD is Daim Blond, for the second day in a row. I found my sample while cleaning last weekend. I mentioned last week that I had found a sample of Beige and that somehow my sense of smell had changed and it was no longer pleasant. Daim Blond was the opposite. I have always really liked it; It has been on my to buy list since first sniff. But yesterday it was so amazing that I reapplied after an hour to smell more. It hadn’t really faded, it did it “just because.” I haven’t had this kind of olfactory love affair in awhile. Today it the day I finally get my credit card out, while SL is offering 36 samples with a purchase. (But I do have to say…it was $120 a bottle when I first tried it. When did it jump to $150?!?! Doing it anyway, it’s still worth it to me.)

Love that one! It was love at first sniff for me too and the first SL FB I bought.

Not sure if you get the wax samples from the SL website purchase, but if that’s not too important to you, I have seen is for about $80-100 on Amazon. If you have Amazon bucks, it’s even cheaper. This is usually the route I go because I can cash in my Fitbit points for an Amazon gift card. I buy from reputable sellers and haven’t ever had an issue with authenticity.

Wherever you get your bottle from, I hope you thoroughly enjoy it :)

That stinks. I don’t understand the point of that. If I want to buy spray then I want to test spray. Testing from a solid will only give me a vague idea of the end result, like buying partially unsniffed. :(

Thanks for pointing that out. I found a few places where I could get the DB cheaper. There’s no point in paying extra $$$ for samples that really won’t help me to find another bottle.

I’ve wanted to try the SL lipstick since I first heard about it, but no-one ships it to Aus. That’s probably a good thing because the cosmetic mark-up here is astronomical. Ridiculously so. A Chanel lipstick is about $55, so I can only imagine what the SL would be. That said, when I saw Anniky’s blog post about the Louboutin lipstick for €80 (erm.. A$122… that’s almost my fortnightly grocery bill!)… I’m pretty sure I wouldv’e bought one too. The packaging is so fantastically outrageous and would be impossible to pass up!

My favorite conditioner, which I usually use actually has a sweet, creamy floral coconut scent, but I picked a different one today because I thought this one would match Incense Flash better. (I swear, I don’t usually match my hair products to my perfume…)

So today, I went with kind of a smoky-floral-vanilla leave-in conditioner (“black vanilla”)… but now I’m curious about how Incense Flash would smell with coconut!

Absolutely! It’s Shea Moisture Coconut & Hibiscus and Carol’s Daughter Black Vanilla. The Coconut & Hibiscus is by far my favorite (I have difficult hair and have never found anything that works as well as this), but Black Vanilla is fun when I want to switch up the scent (be warned though, that the scent is really strong and really long-lasting).

I like both Incense Flash and LADDM. Both are masculine-ish (“masculish” :) ), so I feel like they both suit similar moods for me. I haven’t tried them side-by-side, but off the top of my head, Incense Flash is leathery and dry, while LADDM is spicier and seems brighter to me. Both are worth a try!

Thanks for your response. I did enjoy LDDM when I got it in smaller 5 bottle 3ml set I got a few years back, but not enough to go for a FB. Incense Flash sounds more me and I will need to get a sample sometime. I bought his vanilla flash blind and enjoy it. It is also “mascu-lish” but more incensey than vanilla-ish on me. Cheers!

I chose Bois de Isles today, which I love. I am seriously thinking about purchasing PHI Une Rose… but I’m not sure if I should get a fb or the 3 x 15 ml explorer set. Then I can also get a L’Air du Desert… decisions, decisions. Anyone want to weigh in?

So I tend to agree abt the Explorer Set but just to consider all angles, I will mention that Phi seems to come and go in terms of availability. If it’s something you know you’ll use regularly and eventually want more than 15ml of, I feel like it could be a smart plan to go ahead and get a bottle so you don’t have to worry about it being gone when you want to reup.

But only if you need more than 15ml! I am a light sprayer anyway, and Tauers are strong enough that 15ml would be like 200 wears for me. As I tend to wear L’air du desert marocain only in the winter, a lot of winters will pass before I’ll have worn it 200 times!

Sampling Liqueur Charnelle this beautiful crisp and sunny morning. I’ve had this sample for ages but haven’t tried it because of reviews calling in a Spicebomb clone , which I think is great but not on me, and one mentioning a ton of ISOe Super, which can really bother me. I’m finding it pleasant and wearable, completely unchallenging, and not going on my FB list but not going in the trash pile either. I like it better than Spicebomb and either I’m having a day where ISOe doesn’t bother (they do happen), or it isn’t as concentrated as I feared.
Hope it makes the house cleaning more fun. I caught myself thinking, “I sure wish the kitties would stop eating weird crap off the floor…hmm, perhaps I should vacuum.”

They certainly help with the spiders that get inside (and make it quite amusing). Mom’s house is right on the river so we actually have to sweep the outside of the windows every second day or so, else it looks like a horror movie set. I have suggested an “Arachnophobes Beware” sign by the gate.

A solid tie between Michael Palin and Terry Jones. Ripping Yarns gets as much screen time at out house as our complete Python collection. Actually, Terry J may have a slight edge, just because I think he’s under appreciated and I adore him as the stripping Minister in, I think, the Atilla the Hun Show Python episode.

I’m on my way from Córdoba to Sevilla and in the absence of Cuir Mauresque I’m wearing Cuir de Russie. There’s lots of leather everywhere here, but I must say I smell much, much better than the leather shops. Had roast peppers and grilled local prawns for lunch and am reading a good book on Islamic history. Life is great.

Sounds delightful :) except for the freshly tanned leather, of course. That smell almost makes me retch :-/
For when you arrive, are you familiar enough with Seville a l’aube to know whether it marries well with it’s namesake?

I agree, that smell really is difficult to bear. Then again, it’s a small price to pay for being here.

On Seville a l’Aube: my sample was finished a while ago, so my recollection probably isn’t very accurate and for a literal test it’s the wrong season, too. The orange trees are absolutely everywhere, but there are of course no flowers, just the green or slightly yellow fruits. You cannot really smell anything unless some riper oranges have fallen to the ground or you get REALLY close to a tree and sniff. I tested this repeatedly. That said, I walked by a church just after the arrival and smelled some wonderful, sweet, dense incense and saw huge candles in enormous silver candelabra, so the ingredients are definitely there.

I was raised on Python, which I think is a solid foundation for life. (Thanks parents.) Cleese’s talent for being the appalled “straight” man is amazing, and I often wish I was that clever in the face of inanity/insanity.

Trying one of the samples acquired this weekend – Memo’s Inle. It’s basically an aquatic, so I’m not loving it, despite it having notes I love (tea and osmanthus).

Too bad the swap didn’t happen after Sniffapalooza – I would have had so many great goodies to share!

Washed off the Inle and will put it in my new “goodies to add to other people’s packages” pile, which I’m delighted to be able to now build.

A generous NSTer’s swap package just arrived and contained (among other things) the tiniest little bottle of Chanel’s Sycomore in a little Chanel black and white box. I am delighted with it, and with the smell.

Had a lovely day off today (although not as good as Anniky’s!). Got up early and went for a two hour walk along the beach, then stayed there for a coffee in a great cafe. Came home, did lots of housework which is so rewarding once it’s done- although Im seriously considering a house-cleaner once a fortnight to do the mopping/dusting/bathroom which I hate. Then a friend popped in for a beer and a chat this arvo, and Im now having a black tea with rose on the verandah watching and smelling the rain that’s just started.
SOTD were Voyage d’Hermes today, and this evening I craved vintage Samsara. I forgot how potent this stuff is because 2 spritzes was about 1 1/2 too many for the first hour or so.. lol…

What sucks the worst is that I have already lost my wisdom teeth and three molars on top of it due to dry mouth. I’m thinking that a root canal and possibly losing another tooth might be in order. I didn’t realize that epilepsy itself can do a number on teeth and dry mouth due to medication can compound that. I am a nervous wreck because of the cost and I really don’t want to lose anymore teeth. I hope that I am a canidate for dental implants.

I have one 100ml bottle of the newer stuff that I opened in… 2013, I think, and it’s nearly half gone. Another full 100ml bottle of new. Plus this one I just ordered.

A partial 50ml of older stuff that I bought from a perfume friend who was paring her collection, and a full 30ml of older stuff that I bought and set aside for future use. That might oughta do me.

Geoffrey Beene Grey Flannel – because I want to smell serious but be cozy. I need to finalize some work projects and get some headway on the next ones. Wish me luck!

Also, I’m happy to imagine John Cleese in my SOTD which makes me adore him more. :)

I keep meaning to get that one. The last time I tried, I managed to purchase a bottle of Eau de Grey Flannel…. BIG mistake…. They look the same, from the outside….

Wearing DC Oriental Lounge, a not-bad substitute for a chaise longue, which just couldn’t fit into my office…

The first of my lovely swap goodies arrived yesterday evening, and I sprayed it on – Amouage Lyric Woman – at 6 this morning. Sometimes I wonder if the SUV full of kids I drive 45 minutes to school each morning will be permanently imprinted by my fragrance testing. It’s a car of boys, ages 5 to 15, and so far not one of them has said a thing about the billows of freshly applied scent greeting them near dawn each weekday. I figure at the very least, they won’t be the frag-intolerant complainers in the offices of their futures.

SOTD is Mitsouko extrait b/c I needed some strong shoulders and it’s a perfectly chilly fall day. It’s silly really, but I had to buy a new vacuum cleaner today. My 22 year old beast of a machine has finally died and there are no more parts to be found. Each time I shell out some money for some mundane necessity, I think of the bottles of fragrance that are languishing on my “to buy” list…. boo, ho. Mitsouko was up to the task!

Never stint on a good vacuum cleaner, you’ll just buy one cheap one after another. We have a nice, heavy, expensive, 13 year old one downstairs and a mid-price at Walmart one upstairs so I don’t have to carry the good one. Guess what I do every time? Yep, lug the beast up and down stairs and trip over the cheapie (which my husband uses so we have to keep).

        This is so true!

Have you considered sabotaging the cheap one so that the husband will carry to beast up and down stairs? ;)

Wearing SL Santal Blanc, a swap from the gracious LisainDenver. It’s beautiful, and reminds me of my first bottle of sandalwood essential oil 20 years ago, soft and spicy.

Love John Cleese! The U.S. member of Monty Python and film maker Terry Gilliam was interviewed on NPR recently. I think this is it:

Based on the interview and loving Monty Python and the his film Brazil, I’m looking forward to reading the memoir, too.

I’ll try to put on a suitably silly perfume after Taiji class. Any ideas?
