Our standard issue weekend open thread: talk about anything you like — the perfume you’re wearing today, the last fragrance you added to your buy list, whatever.
Or, ask a question about fragrance, then see if anyone else has asked a question that you can answer…

Indigo Vanilla from EnVoyage is my SOTD. I adore this scent and am so glad I bought it for myself for my birthday in Sept. The most recent addition to the eternal buy list is Nea which may be what I get in May when I go out to Ohio for my 25 yr college reunion (making a pit stop at Indigo Perfumery) but I might be distracted by something else when I get to the store
I’m going to have an odd sort of social day today, and I couldn’t decide what sort of scent to wear! I will be meeting a friend for brunch in a bit over an hour (a very good thing!). Afterwards, Mr. Spicebomb and I need to drive to his parents house (an hour or so away) and say goodbye to their old doggie, whose health has finally deteriorated to the point of needing to kindly let her go (a very hard thing!).
I finally settled on Tauer Une Rose Chypree, which starts livelier and dries down to a spicy, warm comfort scent–hopefully! It can be a bit of a chameleon on me. I don’t want my scent to be too cheerful this afternoon!
You smell divine! I heap blessings on dog owners who have the love and compassion to know when it is time and I understand it is painful and difficult decision.
Thank you! Yes, I think they are doing the right thing, too. I am glad that they’ve decided to not let her decline any further.
So hard to let go of our beloved pets, even when we know it’s the right time! Hope that the beauty of your scent is a comfort to everyone today.
Thank you! Mr. S’s folks *never* comment on my scents, so I have no idea what they think of it. Either they don’t notice, don’t care, or are too polite to say anything!
I’m sorry for your family’s loss. It stinks to make the decision to say goodbye.
I can only echo these thoughts. I found it very hard myself.
Your scent is a great choice!
Thanks, both of you! We’ve been expecting an announcement of this kind for a while now. It will be a relief, in a way, but no less difficult to say our goodbyes! She’s a sweet, lumpy, old golden lab, and she’s been a good companion to Mr. S’s father especially over the years. I wish I felt there was more we could do than to come down and keep everyone company for a while.
Just being there for support is welcomed and appreciated I’m sure. So sorry to hear about this. Goodbyes are hard.
I’m so sorry, Marjorie Rose.
Thank you! I’m such a sap, even though she’s not my dog, I’ll probably cry–especially if Mr. S’s mom looks like she’s holding back tears herself!
If circumstances allow, I cry if I need to, and never apologise. It would be worse not to feel. If crying is what comes, Marjorie Rose, then cry.
It’s so hard to have to make the decision so say goodbye to our fur babies! I hope all of you can give her the best last day possible.
I was thinking of buying some of her favorite cookies, but I would guess the mess wouldn’t be welcome! 🙂
Ah, sad for you. It is hard to say goodbye, even when you know it’s the right time. Sending warm wishes your way.
Sweet of you, thanks!
I’m sorry about the fur-baby. But I love URC and I think you smell lovely.
I go through periods when URC seems to be the most perfect scent ever made. And then (because I’m such a floozy) some other scent takes it down off the pedistal for a while!
So hard to make that decision, as merciful as it is. Good thoughts and best wishes to you both.
Thank you!
Adding my wishes for as peaceful a day as can be under the circumstances. There’s something about the vulnerability of animals–so hard when they go. My childhood dog died while I was in college and it was a good five years before I could hear his name mentioned without welling up. Hope you guys are ok–sounds like you def pick something appropriate to wear for a tough occasion.
They really can touch our lives, can’t they?! I suggested to Mr. S. that we make a point to get back down to his parents house sooner rather than later. It’s clearly gonna be a tough transition for both of them.
It’s been a long time since I last have worn something from Andy Tauer. This weekend I did not forget and am wearing his Phi Une Rose de Kandahar. Gawd, how I love it.
Probably one of the most beautiful modern perfumes. You smell gorgeous!
I love the combination of tobacco and lush rose
Ooh. Lean over and let me take a sniff! I’d love to smell PHI on a fella!
There, there 😉
Hehe 🙂
Wonderful scent! I keep meaning to dig out my decant as I like it better in the cooler months, so appreciate this reminder 😉
Another Tauer here! It’s overcast and a little drizzly now, and Le Maroc pour Elle seemed like a good choice.
I like this one too! It is a trifecta of Tauer wearers today!
Just reminded me I gotta try Le Maroc Pour Elle on myself.
I bet you’ll like it.
Still on no 19. Can’t wait to get home to open my packages from E-bay and start wearing Amouage Epic or Jicky.
Fun! Hope you love what you got!
I saw the Body Shop’s Smokey Poppy body products at Marshalls yesterday so I had to get them! The shower gel is so dark green it looks black, it was oddly compelling and disturbing on my washcloth this morning but it smelled fine and lathered nicely. I then used the body lotion and then layered the Red Musk perfume oil over and it was relatively quiet but nice. I think Smokey Poppy would be nice layered under anything that needed it’s incense enhanced and would work with oriental style fragrances as well. The irony of poppies not having much fragrance does not escape me but the packaging is so pretty!
I got the gel to try – I kind of like the look of it.
You smell fabulous!
Today I have a miserable migraine (it’s slowly on the wane, thanks for asking) so I’m wearing a single wee spritz of CSP Amour de Cacao, which invariably makes me feel better. It’s Zoloft for the soul.
AdC would also be my answer to yesterday’s quick poll about comfort scents: there’s just nothing more comforting than that glorious chocolate-chip-cookie aroma. (SL Jeux de Peau would come in second on my list of comfort scents, but it’s far too complex for a migraine day.)
Sorry you have a migraine. I have a bearable but not fun one this morning too.
Jeux de Peau is on my top five list of incentives to get “my taxes and other paper work” done.
Ha excellent pick!
Oh I hope your migraine passes soon! And thanks for the Amour de Cacao tip, I will have to track that one down–I could use some Zoloft for the soul!
Read on another blog (or possibly here) that Lust from Lush will be discontinued so I grabbed a 10ml bottle to compare with my solid. If I love it as much, I intend to stock up. I am not fond of the tackiess of the latter.
The weather here in Toronto is very schizo at the moment: giant droplets of rain with intervals of summer sun.
I forgot to mention to all the mélomanes out there that I recently discovered Marc André Hamelin’s recording of the Haydn piano concertos. His cadenza for the second movement of the D major is just stunning but purists out there may find it to be too “Romantic” in approach : fine with this 19th century specialist. But yes, do give it a listen!
Thanks for the tip ….I’ll definitely hunt that down for a listen.
Lush has discontinued a whole bunch of my favorites including Orange Blossom, Furze, 25:43, and now Lust? I’m going to sit over here in this corner and pout (or rush over to my laptop and order 10 ml of, too).
ARG REALLY!? (Regarding the Lust.) Crud, ok, going to stock up tomorrow then. BOO. How can that be, they JUST launched the new packaging for it! Bah humbug. I wonder how long solids will keep in my fridge.
I would double-check your source on that, that is one of their best-sellers! They would be ill-advised to discontinue that — I feel like Karma, Lust, and Dirty (however you feel about any of those, I’m not a fan of Dirty or Karma, really) are sort of their foundational scents.
(On another note, I’ve been selling niche decants on Ebay — my Lush ones have been the most popular. I sell Dirty, Furze, Karma, Sikkim Girls, Lust, Sun, and I think that’s all?. Lust is my biggest seller, with Karma right behind. People are crazy about it.)
Just realized my comment came off as sort of snotty, I’m sorry, I meant for it to be helpful and wishful! 🙂
I’d hope they’d keep it but Flying Fox was, at least in these parts, a huge favorite too and now it’s either unavailable or only available in what I’m told is unrecognizable form–evidently it used to have far more jasmine. Makes me worry they’re not able to source the ingredients to keep making jasmine bombs…
Not that I want to provoke a run on Lust, or at least not before I go can grab a handful of solids for myself tomorrow 😉
Flying Fox is gone? Ugh.
Apparently it’s only available in some jurisdictions, and even then not in a form that’s anything like the old one. I’ve actually only smelled the more recent version, and could not figure out why folks on the blogs kept describing it as such a big jasmine–what I smelled was pretty weak sauce. It seems I encountered the reform :/
SOTD is Elie Saab eau de Parfum. Haven’t worn this one in a while, so it was a nice change.
I was on The Body Shop’s Web page and saw their new spa line. Some of the products look nice. Has anyone tried them? And, I finally saw the summer fig that I want to try. Anyone try that one? Thoughts please….
It’s a gorgeous day today and the one day for the next week or so that I’m going to have my husband around so, of course, my blasted head aches. I’m inside having a rest after taking the kitties out for a fun game of “tangle your human in the leash”, bonus points awarded if they could gnaw a forbidden plant while we were distracted.
I would love to be wearing perfume today but the bacon smell made me queasy, so not gonna risk it. If my meds kick in I’m planning on wearing Pulp; otherwise I will live vicariously through y’all. I think I may whip up a quick batch of espresso butter cookie dough to bake later so I can enjoy the scent of browning butter, which can’t possibly smell bad.
Do consider sharing the recipe!
By the way, I do like Montale’s Chocolate greedy, does anyway have a coffee perfume to go with it? It lacks that extra umph!
I use this recipe: http://buttermeupbrooklyn.com/2012/11/espresso-kissed-brown-butter-brown-sugar-cookies/#more-4424
With the following adaptations: I always double it because I can freeze or refrigerate half the dough.
I use a whole egg instead of just the yolk.
I roll the dough into 2″ diameter logs in waxed paper and chill, then slice (about 1/2″ thick) and toss in the sugar just before baking. They end up quite thin and have a better texture this way.
I use Demerara sugar instead of the brown/white mixture.
Mine usually bake a tiny bit longer.
I have a similar recipe for brown-butter cookies, but flavored with cardamom.
That sounds good. Actually, one could add spice easily to this recipe. The espresso powder doesn’t actually make them taste like coffee, just enhances the toffee-like flavor.
Thanks for the recipe. I run a “Munch munch club” with my grade six students and plan to make these cookies and then tell them that they just had their first taste of coffee. I like to get them hooked early.
My grandmother got us all hooked on coffee EARLY–at around age 3 or 4. She would give us a mixture of coffee and milk with a lot of sugar. Probably about 1/3 coffee and 2/3 milk. Gradually, as we got older, it would be more coffee and less milk. I was drinking coffee straight (although still with sugar) by about age 10. My mother thought it was terrible; she said drinking coffee would stunt my growth. Considering that I am 5’9″, if it did stunt my growth it may be a good thing!
Have you tried Noir Exquis? Or, having just smelled a bunch of Montales, I thought their Intense Cafe was one of their best (though I did not get to Chocolate Greedy so I can’t compare exactly.)
Look! Forbidden plants! BONUS POINTS!!!!
Sorry the bacon didn’t help – I’m sure the browned butter will.
Mom has a huge patch of mexican feather grass they love to tunnel in and ambush each other. I’m not keen on a trip to the vet for an intestinal blockage, but they think it’s delicious stuff to nibble.
I wish I could properly share the chaos that ensues with three leashed teenage cats and the clumsy humans who are trying to keep from stomping them/strangling anyone/being climbed and bitten.
I’d love to watch you walk those little guys 😀 ! Wish I’d leash-trained our guys when they were kittens. I think it would be a blood bath now at 3 years old.
So…I’ve been trying to ‘repurpose’ scents that I don’t wear by experimenting with candles, soap, balm etc. and I can safely report that 9 out of 10 experiments have pretty much been a failure. More Charlton Heston than Heston Blumenthal. Re. Perfume for candles…I think that regular perfume doesn’t work for three main reasons: it’s not oil based and is too liquid so doesn’t blend very well, it’s not concentrated enough so there is no smell, and it burns off too quickly so what little smell there is doesn’t last. BUT if you have fond memories of the things you made at kindergarten/ pre school…ie. Mounds of unusable objects that only a mother could love then have a go.
Balms…mixing perfume with coconut oil ( the oil was in my cupboard ) results in something that looks like the leftover fat from a Sunday roast with a layer of slime on top.
My next project is soap…using tallow as itching this will be a real goer. Once more …and as before ….I won’t be doing any research or following a recipe so don’t imagine the results of mutton fat crossed with YSL Paris will take the perfume world by storm.but who knows – a new ‘note’ maybe come out of it.
I ant have more than 45 cm of bottles in my collection as that is how long my shelf is and I love getting rid of the excess…so here goes. Bring on another disaster.
Spot the typo in the above! All I’m saying is tallow makes a good hard soap compared to most vegetarian options…I’m anti palm oil and am too impatient to use olive oil etc because of hardening time. I don’t want gloppy soap.
Your energy is astounding! I’m going to make a note of soap-making as a possible project for my third life, and bring it on quickly, please! I’ve been forming a plan to teach adult literacy as my contribution to society (if the good people at AL will have me; they didn’t seem very keen when I made enquiries) because my hobbies are so inward-looking. Something to go with embroidery and sewing will be good and soap making at home has appeal: it seems just slightly arcane in this modern day, and sounds like lots of fun. My father told me that during the Depression, his mother made used to make soap and once it sort of exploded all over the kitchen. I’ve no idea about the process, but please do be careful.
I was thinking about perfume fire works …when you light them they go whizzing up to the sky and then poof…a rain of perfume drifts down on all the audience. Wouldn’t that be cool?
All my projects fail but it’s the journey that counts!
Perfumed fire works would be the ultimate cool! Shalimar Catherine Wheels (oh, the elegance)…aldehydic sparklers…vetiver Tom Thumbs!
And– here’s a thought– you could re-tell the rather grisly story of 5 November from a perfumista POV: “Guy Fawkes’ scented message”; “Perfume and Parliament: what Guy Fawkes really wanted”; “‘I just wanted to share the sandalwood,’ says Fawkes”.
Apparently my great-grandmother used to make her own soap (with lard) – because after my grandmother died, my mother found a FORTY-FIVE GALLON crock full of homemade soap in her kitchen pantry.
I suspect that it smelled of pig and wood ash. Yours has got to smell better than that. 🙂
I’ve just done the conversion of 45g to litres–wow, that is certainly a lot of lard!
Likewise gobsmacked at the thought!!
My great-aunt also made her soap (and churned butter and raised chickens) during the war (WW2). I believe lard was involved as well as lye. I got the feeling that it could be dangerous.
Yep, that’s the basic recipe – lard and lye. Ugh.
I’ve seen pictures of women with bleeding hands from doing the washing. Sorta took the nostalgia out of it for me!
I’ve made my own soap for a long time. Perfume never worked for me (the alcohol made the soap seize up, so I had soap on a stick) but you may have better luck.
Good to know. Thanks. I have to say I have more fun dreaming up ideas….perfume whoopee cushions anyone – than doing the actual work.
What are your ingredients?
I make a “big bubble” soap with olive, coconut, and castor oils, shea butter, lye, water, and honey, plus 2 oz of fragrance oil for a 40 oz batch. Let it cure for about 2 months and it’s lovely.
Your recount was hysterical! Kudos for the effort. I want to try my hand at candle making at some point but maybe I’ll try to follow expert directions which, as my husband points out, is apparently difficult for me(related to cooking, usually).
So impressed (and entertained!!) by these efforts! Is solid perfume eventually on your list of things to try? I would love to have a good recipe and/or technique tips on how to approach that–I’ve seen Mandy Aftel’s book about it and she makes it sounds very doable but I still feel a pretty nervous about my ability to execute…
I always aim for a spectacular failure…I have five days a week to be serious and I am recipe averse and scientifically incompetent so I might as well have fun.
A sensible way to look at it. 🙂
As I recall, explosions can happen while combining the water and lye. The extreme rise in temperature has to happen gradually. So…problems arise when the water is added to the lye (concentrated heat) or the lye gets dumped wholesale into the water. I THINK the safe approach is slowly adding the lye to the water. You’ll want to double check this, though.
And love the balm description. 🙂
“Once more …and as before ….I won’t be doing any research or following a recipe so don’t imagine the results of mutton fat crossed with YSL Paris will take the perfume world by storm.”
Thank you for this. I laughed–and snorted–out loud.
Another Tauer scent wearer today – sporting Incense Rose. This is my last weekend with my foster dog, and I will be so sad to see him go. Wish I could keep him, but he doesn’t get along with my 4 cats. At least I’ll be able to write a glowing endorsement for him. He’s so smart and loving, and wants so badly to please, but needs to be the sole pet in his forever-home.
As the “parent” of a rescue dog – thanks for fostering.
Your foster dog sounds so sweet!
What kind of dog is it?
He’s a shepherd mix, and has the shepherd’s intelligence and need for exercise. I’ve lost 5 pounds walking him over the past 3 weeks!
It makes sense. Shepherd dogs have an enormous urge to please. It’s a great thing that you are fostering, and I can only imagine the heart ache. Walking a lot is such good exercise, could you start walking your cats I wonder 😉
It’s finally feeling like October here: sunny, breezy, and chilly enough that I need a jacket outside. I’m off to pick up the corsage for my son’s date to the Homecoming dance, as Gaze is still at a cross-country meet. (My husband washed the truck for him and commented that it’s the first time he ever washed a vehicle so that someone ELSE could go take a pretty girl on a date in it… the things parents will do…)
SOTD is Tabac Aurea. I had wanted my vintage Arpege, but can’t find it, boo.
What sweet parents your son has! 😉
Yes, and a lucky date. I can’t remember any boys in my hometown who ever showed up in a clean truck, even for prom.
He always washed the truck himself when he had a date with you, right? 😉
Happy Homecoming! I hope they have fun. Despite mainly being a bit lacking in school spirit, I still have really nice memories of one Homecoming dance–and my date is still a dear friend nearly two decades later! (The pics of us as teenagers are priceless!)
Well, he had a car when we started dating (we were friends for years before that), but yes, he washed his own vehicle. 🙂
Homecoming wasn’t big when I was in high school. It is now – not as formal as prom, but certainly a big social event.
Third here with migraine, fortunately a mild one and also fortunate that my SOTD Portrait of a Lady has almost totally faded away.
Tested Lush Rose Jam shower gel for the first time today, very nice!
Gosh I hope these migraines clear up for everyone pronto!! Glad you still got to enjoy the Rose Jam!
Sorry about the headache. I have the Rose Jam body conditioner and I just love it. Smells like a Strawberry Shortcake doll I had as a kid 🙂
Hello, everyone. Thus far, my SOTD is the remnants of Bulgari Black, which I wore to bed last night as a sort of belated participation in powder puff Friday. I enjoy BB very much, but yet, despite its long soft finish and its warmth, it’s more of a curiosity than a total joy to me. I think the gentle femininity of the dry down is simply lovely, but it feels almost too pretty for me to wear.
Soon, very soon, I will get up and start marking again, and watch the All Blacks’ haka –always SUCH a moment–and for these activities, will wear Jean Louis Scherrer, just ‘cos.
We only watch rugby if it’s Sevens or the All Blacks are playing (guess we’re not really die-hard fans). Love the haka.
I know–that fierceness in the haka, yes? The ABs are doing OK at the moment, but we’re all scared they might choke in the second half. France can be tricksy, very tricksy…
…but in the end, they weren’t. Now for the Springboks!
Fun! Years ago we were in Punakaiki, and the only place open for dinner was a pub. Which was jammed, because the All Blacks were playing in a tournament. We had no understanding of rugby, but dutifully cheered when everyone else did 🙂
That’s the way to go, if the ABs are playing. But Punakaiki? Err…why?
DH & I spent almost a month touring your lovely country. We stopped in Punakaiki to see the pancacke rocks… it was midway between a day of kayaking at Abel Tasman, and a couple days spent hiking and helicopter-ing (is that word?) at Fox Glacier. Wonderful country you have there.
I really like Punakaiki.
It is pretty, but mostly perfume-less, as you will have discovered for your own self. That particular part of A-NZ is tremendously beautiful, but not a great place for dinner or coffee, in my experience.
I love the idea of wearing a sophisticated, classic, glamorous perfume for such a moment! 🙂
Have you tried Santa Maria Novella’s Nostalgia? It has some things in common with Bulgari Black but is less prettified! (Smells amazing in a different way.) Dzing too but that one I find even more cozy than Black so it might not solve your problem! (Anyway you probs know it already.)
No, I haven’t tried any of the SMN perfumes. You know, I was in Florence not so very long ago, and I could have gone to that outstandingly beautiful shop, but I just didn’t. Sometimes when I’m travelling, I get over-exposed to gorgeousness, and it all sort of runs together in my mind like the result of letting a red sock go through the wash with white underwear. Anyway, there are times when I just want to go back to the hotel for a nice cup of tea and a bit of a sit down. Must have been in that frame of mind that day–please don’t pelt me with empty decant bottles; I generally mean well!
Today I wore Tokyo Milk Excess. I have several Tokyo Milk scents but I more or less forgot them this year. l’ll have to look for the others as the weather cools down. Speaking of Lush does anyone know if they are planning to expand their fragrance offerings in the U.S.? I want to try some of the scents that only seem to be available in the UK.
There must be something in the air, I’m having a horrible headache as well, so no scent for the moment. But I bought three &Other Stories scented candles today, as they looked good and the scents seemed promising. Have just lighted Kungsholmstorg, a woody and smoky one.
I had that nagging feeling for a couple of days – you know, when you feel that you have forgotten to do something very, very important but cannot remember what it is. I thought it was something work related, but finally figured out that it was because I had not been on NST. It’s been a busy week at work plus I had a big dinner party to host on Thursday. But I did remember to wear Apres l’Ondee yesterday for the powder day, so I was with you in spirit.
Good to see you back, Annicky! I dropped by your lovely blog this week to catch up. I’ve never tried to comment there, but I always find something interesting. Thanks for doing it!
Dear nozknoz, thank you so much! It’s so nice to receive feedback, especially when it’s positive and especially especially when it comes from seasoned blog-readers like you. You’ve totally made my day and I’m glad you have found something to enjoy.
Annikky, I didn’t realize you had a blog until I read through this thread!
Just spent a lovely hour drinking coffee and perusing your comments on Korean skincare as I will be in Seoul in January and need laser like focus on duty free time.
I do have one, indeed 🙂 I haven’t tested K-beauty very extensively and what I have tried, is mostly mid-priced – the more expensive stuff is very difficult to get here. So in case you’re also interested in Sulwhasoo and others, you might want to check out The Raeviewer, she just did and Asian week on her blog and has some great recommendations. She is a bit too young to be the perfect fit for my skin, but generally I find her taste reliable (and expensive).
Haven’t been able to comment yesterday and scentless and headachy today as well. But still enjoy reading all the comments.
So many headaches!! I hope you feel better soon!
I felt like Ambre Sultan today. It has been a while and I’d forgotten just how powerful this one is, and put on a lot. A whole lot. Good thing I have a lazy Saturday…I better give it a few hours before I face the world!
That said, it smells fantastic in here!!
Haha yes I would join you wherever you’re closing yourself in with the first few hours of Ambre Sultan!
8.40am on a rainy Sunday, and there’s a gale with rain, so goodbye to any pretense of doing anything but puttering about. I’m getting acquainted with Lancome ‘Sikkim’, and liking its spicy green chypre-ness very much. This afternoon I plan to roast a chicken whilst soaking in a bath with Niki de Saint Phalle bath oil and a mystery story.
I like your plan! I loved and wore Niki de Saint Phalle in the 80s, but haven’t smelled it since. I’ve been very tempted to buy the current bath oil though–if it smells true to the old perfume, it’d make for a heavenly soak!
Sounds like a lovely Sunday morning…
My SOTD is MPCPC by Goutal. I don’t usually like using acronyms but writing the entire name is too much work.
This is such a great fragrance, very glad that Goutal brought it back.
That one is really special! I took it as a bad sign when it appeared to be discontinued, so I’m heartened to hear that it is back.
It is, still glad I got mine when I did. I prefer the dark bottle.
I love vanilla fragrances in the fall and am wearing one of my favorites: Shanghai by Guerlain. What a great comfort scent!
I must have missed something. I’ve never heard of Shaghai. Off to google the name.
Shanghai of course.
Couldn’t decide between Micallef Denis Durand Couture and Bottega Veneta so I am wearing a bit of both. We had our first bit of snow today so it’s definitely winter scent season. Spent last evening dusting the perfume bottles and rotating out the summer scents.
Snow? Oh no…where are you?
I like dusting my bottles. I find things I’d forgotten about when I do.
Wow, there seem to be a lot of headaches going around today! Add me to the list–I had one so bad that it actually woke me up from a sound sleep early this morning. I had to find the Advil and wait for it to kick in before I could get back to sleep. I’m attributing it to the respiratory virus I have had this week. I am getting better, but now hubby has it. I have not been wearing perfume all week since I can’t really smell anything much. Here’s hoping for a speedy recovery for all of us ailing perfumistas!
I was thinking the same: a lot of headaches today! Change of weather, maybe? My head is fine but I’ve got a weird kink in my shoulder….so I join you all in the advil.
Funny–I’ve had a weird cramp in my shoulder on and off for the last couple of weeks.
You too!?! Feel better! Gosh it really must be that time of year–changing seasons, regardless of hemisphere!
Hosting an (indoor) pool party for my son’s 13th birthday – so exciting! Wearing Terracotta and pretending it still feels like summer. ????
Here on the Texas coast, it does still feel like summer! 😎
Happy birthday to your teen, and a happy scent day for you! Terracotta makes me :).
I’ve just bought a large decant of Lutens’ A La Nuit, and while I love it, I finds its sillage and longevity quite ordinary. I’m wondering what other people’s experience with this one is?
I wore it last night and had similar thoughts. I love it, but it doesn’t feel quite as “death by jasmine” as it once did. Could they have toned it down a bit (my bottle is new)? Or has my nose adjusted? It’s still a serious jasmine, of course, not weak by any means.
I’m not very demanding regarding sillage and longevity, but I have experienced jasmine bowers at night in the tropics, and A la Nuit seems photo-real. My bottle is at least several years old. (Not sure exactly because it was second-hand on ebay.) Dry fall air might not be doing it any favors, if you’re in the north.
Hmmm … thanks both. Similar experiences by the sound of it. I’m in Australia and the weather will be hot soon, so that may help. Anyway, frequent re-application would be a good excuse for saving up for a FB. Christmas maybe. 🙂
SOTD = SSS Rose Musc. This is becoming one of my favorite scents..it is perfect for this weather, and it kept me cheerful during a shopping ordeal…
Well, I don’t have a headache, but I did oversleep and woke up stupid. Been stupid all day. Lots of going into rooms and forgetting why I’d come; leaving, and then remembering; returning, and once again getting distracted and forgetting to do what I’d come there to do in the first place. I think I’ll just give in and be stupid.
However, the highlight of the day so far is testing Canoe Skive: oh my, this is lovely!
What a clever write-up 🙂
Canoe Skive sounds lovely and the package looks great, too.
You smell fabulous, Pixel! Annikky, yes, their leather is beautiful, too.
Darn, I have got to find Skive someplace for a sniff, otherwise I may make one of those late-night blind buys. Thanks for the reminder. I need to write things down!
Eeek, I also want the tote bag which I don’t need, just like I don’t need the perfume…
Jeepers, what’s up with the headaches? I’ve had a couple of tension headaches this week for the first time in years, but I blame that on workplace drama.
Sorry to hear about the migraines. They’re the pits.
SotD is the remains of yesterday’s Baiser Volé which I sometimes call “kiss the ferret” in my head, a fractured French to English translation. 😀
😀
My lack of French invariably summons up, “Kiss the Vole” whenever I see that name. I think the scent is simply too cool and light for my tastes, but have to admit it’s possible I’ve never been able to give it a fair chance because voles are sort of creepy.
So pleased to read that other people think of rodents!
Add me to the headache list too. I had a pounding one for a few days this week. Better today but I’m tired.
I finally mustered up the courage to go and get a big girl phone. I couldn’t keep my old number but the new one isn’t bad. I actually got an iPhone. Now I need to figure out how to use it. Lol. Thankfully I can still use my old phone in the interim since its paid for into November anyway. Now comes the hassle of telling people my new number. That’s not a bad thing because if there’s someone that I don’t want to have my number anymore that’ll solve that problem. I want to throw up when I think of the money I’m spending on this thing but hopefully it will be more useful to me than my old one and I’ll soon feel its money we’ll spent. I couldn’t help but think of the dent in my perfume budget this will make. 🙁
Today’s scent was…I can’t recall. It’s long gone now. Tonight’s might be Chergui for a cozy night on the couch watching Harry Potter.
Congrats on the phone! Chergui and Harry Potter sounds like a great combo.
It’s a delightful combo. 🙂
Poodle, this is indeed timely! I’ve never had a smartphone and finally in August resolved to get the biggest baddest iPhone when the 6s plus come out. Then, as soon as it did, I began to dither again. (Why not a mini iPad or an iPad Air? Why lose the convenience of a tiny phone? Ad infinitum.) We’re talking Roja Dove, JAR, or some sweet vintage in on the one hand, versus a piece of tech whose beauty you can’t even see because you’ve got it armored up to protect your investment on the other. And the perfume could last a half century. But I keep telling myself I need to face the 21st century before it’s too late.
They have iPhone courses, don’t they?
I’ve got other Apple stuff so I should figure it out. I know I needed the darn thing but I’d really rather have gotten a bottle of something on my wish list. I guess I’ll try to get some new scents by wandering over to the swap meet and posting my list.
I recently read an article about all of the celebrities and famous people who have gone back to flip phones! They are considered “in” now. 😉 So forget the i-phone and buy the expensive bottle of perfume.
Why didn’t you tell me that earlier? Ugh. So now I’m still not one of the cool kids. 😉
My husband used to tease me about my old flip phone I had when we were dating but honestly that thing had the best sound and signal of any phone I’ve had since. It was pretty big and he’d call it the pay phone in my pocketbook.
You’re an intellectual poodle; you’ll *always* be cool! 🙂
P. S. I miss my flip phone!
I’m a more hardened troglodyte: mine isn’t even a flip phone, just a candy bar. 🙂
Of course, the celebrities brandishing retro chic flip phones all have personal assistants and agents on smartphones organizing everything for them. 😉
I still have no cell phone at all. I may give in to a simple phone with texting some day, but I haven’t felt the pull strongly enough, yet. I *do* have an iPad, but it’s only wifi enabled, so if I’m out travelling, I have to find a Starbucks or something to check my emails. Kinda hoping that will continue to feel like enough.
OTOH, I can imagine my mother LOVING having the ability to tweet, share pictures, etc., if she had me to do it with. I’ve toyed with the idea of buying us both phones to enable those little contacts more easily. She lives 2 1/2 hours away and she’s getting less mobile. I might give in for her sake (if I can convince her to let me spend the money).
I actually have the cellphone instead of a landline and often leave it at home. If my parents were still around, I think it would be different. It sounds like you and your mother would have fun!
Hi all , happy weekend . I’m away visiting my parents and I didn’t pack any perfume . I’m missing my bottles like my children . I was planning on a possible airport purchase but they only had the super expansive niche bottles at the domestic terminal and nothing inspired me . I’ve been doing a bit of leisurely perfume reading and it’s only led to further longing . Can’t wait to get home .
I think it ms been a good thing for me to go without for a few days . I love and appreciate them a lot more now .
It’s a beautiful day here and I’m imagining Mitsuko would hit the spot . Enjoy a fragrant day for me all .
What air terminal is it that has niche perfume? You’re right, an occasional perfume fast is useful. First impressions of perfumes after a break are often interesting.
Sydney domestic airport .
Bond no 9
L’art
Amouage
Phenhlg
Tom Ford .
Nice selection but I don’t impulse buy over $180 .
Ooh thank you for the report–same here on no impulse buying so I’m extra grateful for the advanced notice on what may be available where.
Welcome .
U will find them in the beauty section . Look out for the MAC cosmetics counter and you will find them in there.
So many headaches, hope everyone sleeps well and feels better.
SOTD is Assam Tea. There’s more to this than the charming elephants on the bottle. It’s light but warm, the lemon adds a freshness I love. It’s staying power is quite good…have had on for 8 hours now. I stopped wearing tea all together for s long time and recently tried Milano Black Tea and I found it stifling. So am happy with this and the price point.
Sorry for all the headaches….hope everyone wakes up headache-free tomorrow.
I have a question….maybe I’ve just been living under a rock….but where has Tommi Sooni perfumes gone? They were never widely distributed in the States in the first place, but now they are just gone! Are they discontinued?
In other news: I am re-testing Papillon Salome…..the first test I didn’t like it at all. This test….I’m finding it very similar to vintage Rochas Femme…. any one notice this?
Just popping in to say hi! Nothing to say about Tommi Soonie or Papillon though…
*air kisses in the direction of Daisy*
Portia of Australian Perfume Junkies would probably know, if no one here does. No help on Papillon. What new perfumes are you loving recently, Daisy?
So happy to see you back here! I’ve missed you. 🙁
“Vintage Femme”?!? Count me in!!
My understanding is that Tommi Sooni is indeed gone. When I tried Salome, it reminded me of DSH’s Le Smoking (still have to try Femme).
To me, Salome smells a lot like Guerlain Vol de Nuit. I like it a lot, but since I have a FBs of VdN in both extrait and EdP, I see no need to buy it.
Great to see you here Daisy!! Happy coincidence, but now I’m thinking of you b/c my SOTD on Sunday is Fifi Chachnil edt…. Ah, such beauty! 😉
It’s been too many years since I last smelled Femme, but I own a bottle of Salome and love it.
Cold day here. We will reach the freezing point tonight.
I’ve been on a leather kick for the past month. I wore Atelier Cologne Gold leather most of the week. Today i was sampling TF Tuscan Leather, and on me it smell quite similar to Interlude Man.
Has anyone sampled the RL Supreme Leather? Is it out yet?
I also want to try Varvatos Dark Rebel.
We might get a frost tonight too. I’m so glad the puppy is basically housebroken and our trips outside are quick and easy for the most part now. There’s nothing worse than standing out in the cold in your bathrobe begging a puppy to pee quickly.
I really like Gold Leather. You had a great smelling week.
I’m bucking the trend by having a nasty cold rather than a headache. Odd, since we are in the middle of summer here. I’m wearing Narcisse Bleu which I’v found really nice when I’m sick. It’s like a cool compress 🙂
Hope you feel better soon. Everyone at work is getting sick but so far I’ve been lucky.
Its actually the middle of summer here! But I’v been given an office to work in (temporarily) that has air conditioner. Its a great blessing in this weather, but unfortunately it was set way too cold for some days, and I did sometimes forget to bring a jersey…
Today I’ve been wearing Havana Vanille, from a bottle I bought when it was still new and still had that name. I don’t wear it very often because it’s quite overpowering. I have to spray at a distance and waft it over onto myself to be able to enjoy it. It can be pretty cloying especially at first but I love the smoky dry down.
A reader of mine recommended Ferragamo Pour Femme to me (I’m on a chypre kick and was looking for something inexpensive) and I’m absolutely loving it right now. It continues to be more beautiful after every hour!
Any other cheap thrills chypres you’d care to recommend?
I really liked Paloma Picasso, but had to give it away because it made me sneeze (I haven’t heard of it doing that to anyone else though…)
That one gives me headaches! Too bad because it’s so pretty.
I really love Youth Dew!
wearing Eau du soir, it WAS one of my favorites and most complimented. It must have been reformulated again, the spray is also changed and an old collegea of Sisley confirmed that because of the new spray you get more oxygen with a spray.
Sooooooo sad….
What a coincidence your write about Eau de Soir…it is my SOTD. I have a 33.3 oz. bottle and a 1.7 oz. bottle of the vintage scent. I am so glad I bought them both after reading your post.
SOTM is the lingering drydown of last night’s bedtime spritz of Cuir Mauresque, and wow, is it ever beautiful.
I love this one and will get a full bottle at some point.
Oh Annikky! If only I’d known! On the 15th Premiere Avenue had a 20% off sale on SL–even with the steep shipping to the US it was a good deal for me. They have the 50ml bottles of Cuir Mauresque.
I know I’m all the way down here, but I am looking at my decants and it made me remember about my very fortunate mls of Fifi Chachnil. I went to the site and there are only extrait and some lotions, etc, no more edt or edp. Does anyone know if this has been discontinued?
I’m in Newcastle upon Tyne at the moment (Steve Earle gig tomorrow night – hurrah!) & am wearing Trish McEvoy’s Snowdrop & Crystal Flower, which I bought at a mini Neiman Marcus in Fort Worth longer ago than I care to admit! Finally found the reformulated AG Eau de Ciel in Fenwicks department store here, & as I feared, I don’t like it nearly as much as the original – it’s somewhat similar, but there something about it that I really don’t care for.
‘Lo, all. I was sympathetic to the headache sufferers yesterday, and today I’ve joined you. Errk. Have to go and see the surgeon this morning about this eye operation that’s coming up, and it’s the last thing I want today, someone shining lights and taking measurements and whatever he has to do. CROSS SIGH. Think I’ll wear 19, jeans and my most comfortable silk tunic. I just want to get through today somehow. Damn beastly bloody Monday!
Poor u, waterdragon!, hope the appointment is swift for u, and the headache doesn’t linger too long.
Thank you. I’ll be fine: nothing lasts for ever (she says philosophically). I think it’s more that I just wasn’t ready for the weekend to be over, you know?
I never am. 🙂
End of a lovely weekend, enjoying the delicious dry down of L’Temps d’une Fete, it really is wonderful in the autumn.
I cooked a really tasty spanish pork stew for friends today, the first time we’ve had friends over for a long time, as i’ve just finished working weekends, and it was so nice to be socialising over sunday lunch again.
I identify with everything you said… Would you be inclined to share your recipe? I’m always in search of new stews to try.
I’m on my third day of wearing Rose Jam perfume by Lush. Delicious.
I recently purchased the solid of Lush’s Imogen Rose (IR). The sour vegetables intro that is common in some natural rose fragrances (from what I’ve read, I think it depends on how the “oil” is produced) lasts for a while. I don’t like the sour vegetables aroma, but I can deal with it if it fades soon enough and is replaced by something more pleasant. Unfortunately, in IR the sour vegetables aroma is replaced by something nasty and rotting that lasts for hours. This really detracts from the other notes 🙁
I don’t like sour rose notes either.
Today I’m wearing Orchidee Vanille by Van Cleef & Arpels. My husband only likes perfume that smells of cookies, so I figured since we are lounging about together today I’d wear something he’d probably enjoy.
I recently purchased a (sealed) vintage L’Air du Temps dusting powder off Ebay–my mother gave me hers when I was about 9 and I have fond memories of getting out of a hot bath, dusting with perfumed powder, and then donning a (faux) satin nightshirt. I wonder if it’ll still have the same effect of if I’ll turn my nose up at it. We will see tonight after a bath! 😉
Hey twin. You smell great.
