Wednesday scent of the day 9/30

Posted by Robin on 30 September 2015 208 Comments

Fendi Karlito Fox Fur & Leather Pom-Pom Charm

Happy Hump Day! What is your fragrance today?

I'm still in Fendi Theorema.

Reminder: this coming Friday will be Best Buy Friday: tell us about your most amazing discount or other rare find. (suggested by Oakland Fresca)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Note: top image is the Fendi Karlito Fox Fur & Leather Pom-Pom Charm ("Charmingly reminiscent of Karl Lagerfeld's iconic style, this plush fur pom-pom can be clipped to your handbag or keys for a dose of sartorial whimsy."). $1450 at Saks Fifth Avenue.

SOTD is Diptyque Philosykos lotion and Tam Dao EDT. I am curious if any of you have combined these two. I think it smells quite lovely.

Hello, NST. Ummm, I’m seldom at a loss for words, but the leather and fur pom-pom leaves me speechless, and the price makes my eyes water! However, I suppose it’s just the thing for people who need some clip-on sartorial whimsy.

I should be asleep, but that’s not happening, so I’m wearing a soft dressing gown, a severe frown (I’m marking Year 2 assignments–they also make my eyes water, but for different reasons!) and Epic, just because I thought that I would like to be accompanied by some glamour at this decidedly unappealing hour of the night. Well, morning: it’s 2.30 here. Epic is beautiful, big and soft and very present: I can’t overlook it or forget about it, and it’s just the right companion for this small hours marking lark.

Me neither. A bag pom-pom: fancy that!

If I had one, I think Dakkie would never rest until he had used his mad hunting skills, honed by years of intrepid trapping of knitted mice, to capture and shred it. $1450! Aiee!

I tend to carry black purses and take the opportunity to funk it up with purse clips / key fobs and the like. Recently, Coach had a collaboration with Peanuts. Next to perfumes and owls, i also have a Snoopy obsession. I blind-bought the Snoopy key chain with the intention to clip it to my purse. Well, when it arrived, I just realized that it was the size of a tall Starbucks cup. It is sooo not getting clipped to my purse!

I had the same reaction to the item of “sartorial whimsy”. I can’t imagine being so wealthy or jaded or whatever, that I couldn’t find a better way to spend $1450.

I know right? That’s just excessive. I’m going to India for a month this Winter and $1450 will pay for my entire trip including airfare, food, ground transportation and accommodations! Meanwhile, $1450 would feed and clothe an Indian family for a year!

Epic was one of my first serious purchases in the rabbit-hole. I had smelt it, loved it, stupidly not bought it, so eventually asked a colleague who was pootling off to a conference if he would please, very sweetly, pick me up a bottle. He did, but not being a denizen of the rabbit hole, he thought more would be better, so he bought a 100ml bottle. !!!

Which though, in Amouage terms, is actually a great deal! Ive always found it odd that there really isnt much price difference between their 50 and 100ml bottles.
Epic and Lyric were 2 of my early purchases too, and although 50ml is more than plenty considering the litres of scent I possess, I still look at them and sometimes wish I had the bigger one. Because you know, whenever I buy the smallest one of one I love, they go and do something silly like reformulate or discontinue :-/ (although Amouage has a pretty good track record so far bar attars)

Yes, I know what you mean about the difference in prices between the sizes, so I wasn’t too bothered really. It’s a biiiiig bottle, though! I don’t think Amouage will discontinue out of pure badness he way some houses do, but even if they did, I have to believe that I’m set for the rest of my life with Epic.

I’ve abandoned the marking: it’s too utterly depressing for this time of the day. I’m listening to Meatloaf instead.

            30 September 2015 at 3:06 pm

I tend to ‘relax’ more with 100ml bottles, and feel happier spraying with abandon, and wearing them more often, it’s really silly, as 30ml and 50ml bottles are so much more practical in ever expanding perfume collection’s, but with the perfumes i really, really love it’s so reassuring having a vat of the stuff!

Yes, and everything else I could lay my hands on. And I sometimes broke out Leonard Cohen as well, just for variety, and John Clarke/Brian Dawes clips as well, just so I could laugh at absurdity.

The night passed, But now it’s almost six o’clock, and I have to get up and see what the day holds. Sigh…three hours of sleep really isn’t enough.

I admire your devotion to Theorema. I’m sparingly doling out my last couple of millilitres. But not today!

It’s a miserable rainy old thing out there and I’m at home so for no particular reason I decided I needed Florentia 24 by I Profumi di Firenze, mostly roses but neither velvety nor dark (as my favourite roses are): it’s incredibly bright and brittle, sharp as a box of razor blades.

Perthgirl, I don’t know if you will see this, but I decided to go with Alaia today as body lotion, with the merest smidge of a smudge of the perfume from the sample I was given. I love it this way: it’s a gentle, not uninteresting floral, leaning mauve, with some other bits of business going on.

Flowerhead for me today since it feels more like early summer than anything here. The weather isn’t cooperating and making it feel like fall, so I guess there isn’t much use in trying to wear the fall-winter scents I’m sure to be tired of in a few months.
I’m feeling a combination of grumpy and smug. My husband took my car to his conference this morning without asking. He just called to say my car doesn’t fit in the parking garage that was included with the registration fee :) He had to cough up for valet, and he has to leave and go to a meeting at noon so he’ll have to valet it twice. Ha! I really shouldn’t feel so smug, that money could go toward something more fun, but I just can’t help it. He should have asked.

Of all the perfumes I cannot believe got discontinued, this is the biggest — it’s not hard to love, or one of those weird perfumista oddities, and it does not smell “dated” to me. It’s an easy to wear comfort scent. You’d think everybody (or enough anybodies) would adore it.

Isn’t Cuir de Lancome just marvelous? Just creamy, lovely and smooth. A different animal from Chanel’s Cuir de Russie; I would wear this almost anywhere and anytime. Very easygoing and cozy.

Yes!, so wonderful and creamy. The weather here has been warm and golden, but cold in the mornings, CdeL has been perfect. My husband really loves it too, which is nice. I’ve only sampled cuir de Russie once, in Harrods, it was beautiful, i remember feeling like it gave me a glimpse into another world and made me feel elegant and refined.I think tho,for the price i will stick to cuir de lancome. I’m looking out for a good deal on vintage Jolie Madame, and i think a bottle of Bottega veneta is in my future too!

Very cool, crisp early morning so-
    Tom Ford Noir Femme.

It’s a sample, and an odd choice at first for me: I thought it would be too heavy. But it’s not- it’s lovely, really, with a floral/spice feel and then there is a gentle vanilla at the base. It’s super, duper cozy, like a just right mug of tea in the morning, and yet has a sexiness that is not obvious. I think that I will be buying a bottle of this (oy, my house savings fund!)

After my shower this morning i decided it was a lily day, and used some Donna Karan Gold body lotion. Then I sprayed Gold liberally over just showered self- and smelled only that instantly recognizable whiff of turned perfume! I couldnt decide which was more horrifying- that or that I really didnt have time for another shower! I then looked for Lys Soleia to use as a back-up, during which time Gold began to smell more like lilies than vinegar. So it seems only the top notes have turned but I presume it’s on its way out :-(
Topped up later with LS, which I think is great, but I do my love my Gold too. So sad :-(

Wonder if it was just that whatever had stuck in the sprayer from the *last* time you used it had gone bad? Could be the bottle, yes… but more than once I’ve pulled out something for the first time in months and been absolutely HORRIFIED at what came out on my skin* – and very relieved when upon the second use it seemed all right again. I’m hoping the spoilage isn’t the whole bottle.

*Once it was Alahine, which just shocked me speechless because I love it so… but I only wear it in cold weather, and the bottle had been undisturbed for a good 8 months or so.

I did have really bad hayfever this morning, so I knew my sense of smell wasnt 100%, but enough to recognise THAT smell! I did give it about 5 sprays, but agree with you, and have left it out with a scent strip to try it tomorrow to assess the damage. Hopefully it’s the sprayer as I havent used it in months..

Oh that’s such a shame, i love Gold too, so lovely for Autumn.
In the UK it’s a brilliant bargain, my (slightly used) 50ml bottle was £8.00! – maybe i’ll wear that one for friday.
The only thing is that if it’s too warm, it can make me feel a bit queasy, it’s powerful stuff!
How is Lys soleia in comparison?

I love that one, but my husband seemed to have an allergic reaction when I sprayed it and then got in the car shortly afterwards – clearly one to wear when I am not going to overwhelm him. You have reminded me to make sure I use it again soon. Interesting how different mimosa is in FdC to the recent Jo Malone – which seems to last a lot better if I use the shower gel too.

Oh, how unfortunate! But I hope you still get to wear it occasionally, it’s a great scent. Une Fleur de Cassie and Mimosa & Cardamom are in totally different categories for me, although I like both. I bought the M&C candle, and it’s very good in that format. Tempted by the shower gel, too.

Ah, a perfume without a sense of humour. No.19 is very stern, but too beautiful indeed to be waisted.
Ideally you would like something pretentious.

While I don’t happen to have that particular association with Une Fleur de Cassie, I can see why it falls into that category for you. It’s an “intelligent” scent, and it’s my favourite Malle. I didn’t enjoy the first version of it as much as the current one. It seems more radiant these days.

I dabbed some vintage 19 perfume on my arms last night and can still smell it today even after showering. That stuff is tenacious and lovely. I was worried that the hot summer days might have spoiled it, but I guess it’s an old battle axe perfume: as good as ever! My vintage Armani from 1983 on the other hand…. definitely something funky going on with it. I will do as someone suggested here and try spraying it a few times to see if the funk is in the sprayer straw.
Today it’s pouring rain, but still kind of warm. I’m layering Royal Apothic Terra Firma hand lotion (that has wood and vetiver notes) with a little Rose Anonyme (and a few traces of 19 perfume).

Good luck to you! I admire the work you do, have often thought about volunteering at a shelter but I so easily become emotionally attached I’m reluctant to do so. Right now I’m fostering 2 cats for a friend of a family member who moved to the east coast and needed time to get his family settled before retrieving them. The arrangement was to be for 6 months but it’s been 9 months already. I hear less and less from him yet each time I do he says he’s coming back for them as they are his daughter’s cats. Well, of course, now I don’t want him to because we have all bonded so nicely and I don’t want to give them up! Whenever I check my email or phone messages I breathe a sigh of relief when there is none from him . . .

Robin, you are really loving the Theorema. I don’t remember you ever wearing a scent so many days in a row, save for the Bronze Goddess lotion when you’re on vacation.

No SOTD here yet. I’m thinking it will be Traversee du Bosphore. I haven’t worn it in a long time and the weather is perfectly sunny but brisk for it.

I made it to the Botanic Garden to see the Corpse Flower yesterday. It was gorgeous and I’m thrilled to have seen it, considering that it is possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity,…But the smell wasn’t what I expected. I’ve never smelled a dead body, so I have no point of reference there. I would say it was similar to having a garbage bag full of fruit and vegetable peels, and some of the cat’s good work, then forgetting to take it out and discovering it in the morning. Except much milder. Apparently when it bloomed just around midnight the odor filled up the room and brought tears to the eyes of the staff members. By the time I arrived (around 4 p.m.), it was hardly noticeable. I had to lean in and sniff. So I guess I was a little disappointed about that. Baby Jack produces diapers with 10x the sillage. I’m still happy I went though. As a bonus, their website was live streaming the exhibit so grandma (who lives about six hours away) got to see us go through. That was pretty cool.

I was there last night as well, and quite disappointed by the lack of scent. I got there at 9:30, and waited for two hours in line. It must have blossomed the previous evening, because when I finally got to set it at 11:30, it looked like it had hardly bloomed at all, and someone who works there told me the flower was actually closing up, and they weren’t sure if it would open again. So I didn’t even get to see it open.

        Two hours! Wow. That’s dedication.

I guess the good news (?) is that if you had gotten there earlier the smell wouldn’t have been much different. I’m sorry you didn’t get to see it open though. I can see on the live feed that it’s still pretty closed up.

Maybe we’ll get another bloom someday. The plan was to use the pollen from Spike on the rest of their plants (7 or 8 I think). That should increase the possibility of another open one. There’s a fascinating video on their website that shows them cutting a hole in Alice and brushing on the pollen.

Thanks for the report on the corpse flower. Someone elsewhere commented it smelled like a dirty diaper, so your comments sound like what I imagined. After all the horse manure smells the past weekend, I’m not sorry for not sniffing the corpse flower.

Speaking of Mackinac, you are right on about the lilac! I’d never heard that lilacs were prevalent there until we took a carriage ride/tour and they were pointed out. Lilac is a favorite flower of mine, and although I love gourmand fragrances and earthy notes, I’ll take a pass, too, on the bottled Mackinaw scent!

Oh, and who in Chicago makes a good pasty? I’d love to know. We bring them back whenever we make a trip to Wisconsin or Michigan. This time we brought some back from Bessie’s in St. Ignace; they are delicious!

I’m in Cloon Keen Atelier Copacetic today. It’s miserably humid and rainy out, so I wanted something citrus-y to perk me up. This reminds me a lot of a citrus-scented Crabtree and Evelyn body lotion I used to wear. Granted, that was sometime in the 90’s, and I haven’t smelled the lotion since, so I may be way off.

Although, I have found two favorites this way, Theorema and Cuir de Lancôme, so it hasn’t been too painful ;) I am still sad about TF Velvet Gardenia though.

I still have moss rose plants outside and noticed a nice fuscia flower on one of them yesterday. It reminded me of the flower bow on my small bottle of Coach Poppy Freesia Blossom, so I had to put some of that on today.

I love moss roses – I get a pack every year. I even got one straggler in a pot from last year (living in San Diego, some annuals can actually be perennials!).

I thought it looked fake…and cheap (it reminded me of one of those troll dolls that were so trendy for a millisecond). But I knew if Robin used it as an illustration it must be Fendi and expensive but $1450?

All it shouts to me is, “Odd!” But then, the milk of human kindness and imagination is a little curdled in me today, and if I saw it in real life, I might be enchanted, though not sufficiently to lay down US$1450. I know Dakkie would be enthralled: a furry thing that swings around! Yay! It would become his personal project to reduce it to its component parts.

    SOTD = Bvlgari Black

There was a power outage as I was getting ready for work. It was too dark for me to manage wearing contact lenses but Bvlgari Black was easily accessible and I went with it!

I’m wearing Invasion Barbare (MDCI) which was the first MDCI I ever tried. I find the name very inappropriate as it is such a civilised scent, but then a lot of fragrance is hampered by a silly name.
Anyway it’s a stunning fragrance, one of my favourite masculines.

That one is GORGEOUS. It’s still the only MDCI I’ve ever smelled and it’s almost enough to make me order their discovery set… (which has a very nice amount of juice for the money, it’s just a lot of money–for me–to spend on essentially a blind buy… Maybe a later, more flush moment :) )

MDCI has a style that I happen to love and I think their sample set is a good deal. I like most of them and some of them I love. IB belongs in the swoon category. The sample set is also pretty, just saying…

And presumably the ones that didn’t work for me would be very swappable…AND I’ve just noticed (if I can possibly be understanding this correctly, it seems too good to be true?!) that if one purchased the sample set directly from MDCI, they will apply the whole price to a full bottle, should you choose to buy one! So it’s really a superlative deal, something like 170ml of eight different perfumes for $250 or so…

Is it too early to start a Christmas wish list?? :)

(Gosh actually is it even better than that? Reading closely, it kinda sounds like they might then send you five more 12ml “samples” for free when you buy the bottle. My brain’s exploding a little bit right now.)

          • austenfan says:
            30 September 2015 at 2:32 pm

I think that you probably get either samples with your order or a discount if you buy a sample set first.

It’s definitely a good sampler set and really quite generous sizes- I especially adored Nuit Andalouse and Rose de Siwa and vepres- so basically all of them!

I would love help identifying a magnolia based perfume….one that is great and mainstream so I can find it in town.

I am going through a phase of matching my perfume to the notes in my neighbourhood and I am surrounded by magnolia trees in full bloom and the scent as I walk through the botanical gardens is intoxicating….

For my two cents, I also find this a very pretty floral perfume, but relatively unrelated to any magnolias I’ve smelled in real life (although I’m sure there are varietals I haven’t encountered!)

Ralph Lauren Safari – again! – today. The rain seems to have dried up for the nonce, but we’re expecting it back this afternoon… and showers tomorrow… and Friday… AND Saturday…

The high school even elected to move Friday’s Homecoming football game to Thursday evening, so that the ground might not be completely soaked (of course, running around on wet turf tends to tear up the ground and ruin it for future games, particularly on our clay soil).

Chanel Chance Eau Tendre. Just bought this in the 1.7 oz. Love this one, and also the Eau Fraiche. Just smells great to me.

Not so info the original or the new Eau Vivre, they don’t play nice on me.

Eau Tendre was the first of the Chance line that I purchased. I think it’s simple but very pretty, I wore it on my first date with my boyfriend.

It took me much longer to warm up to the original. A friend used to wear it and to me it didn’t smell great on her, so I stayed away from Chance. But this summer, I had a roller coaster life experience and finally gave Chance a proper try. It gave me a nice , bright energy kick, and I needed a good luck charm! Chance edt and edp got me through all the ups and downs. I prefer the vanilla in the edp and will have to get the yummy parfum next. :)

SOTD is an interesting version of “I am culling my collection today for the swap meet and gee whiz I didn’t even know I owned this!”

Where did that bottle of 1000 come from? And I found a DKNY silver bean necklace w/ solid Cashmere Mist. of course it has no scent anymore, but just sliding the sculptured bean open took me to a different decade.

Back to the task at hand…

On a cool and sunny fall day it’s Coty’s classic L’Origan that beckons. It’s especially clove-y today and delightful! I’ve loved this one a long time – I first smelled it on a friend of a friend named Judy in high school and think of her each time I wear it – and love it still. Plus it’s a fragrance that’s even older than I am and that makes me smile . . . :-)
