Monday scent of the day 9/21

Posted by Robin on 21 September 2015 127 Comments

Estee Lauder solid perfume compact

Can you believe it's Monday again? Hope everyone enjoyed the weekend! Do tell us what fragrance you're wearing.

I'm in Estee Lauder Private Collection Tuberose Gardenia (but not from the solid compact shown above).

Reminder: this Friday will be 3 Hour Tour Friday: you're going on a short afternoon cruise but who knows, you just MIGHT get stranded on a desert island. You can take up to 3 perfumes from one brand OR one perfumer. Choose your 3, wear one of them. (From a suggestion by Nozknoz)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

    A nice cool morning.
I believe last night was the first night we slept without using the air conditioning. Fall is my favorite season-so I am really excited.
Lately I have been obsessed with the TF fall makeup collection. I love plum colors for the autumn season.
So far I am commando this morning. Thinking of Journey Woman.
    Enjoy your week everyone

Wearing Soliflore Gardenia from Dame Perfumery. It was one of the samples in the Unreleased set from Tigerlily and I really hope this is one of the ones that will eventually be released–it really is nothing but straight gardenia, including the funk, especially close up

Being inspired by the Top 10 fall scents post, I almost wore Balenciaga Paris. But at the last minute changed mind to drain Infusion D’Iris sample (one of two). It’s good in fall too!

Just spritzed some Box of Eels because I’ve been in a sandalwood mood ever since the temperature dropped below 85.

Spent all day yesterday at the Brooklyn Book Festival and went to several panels – saw Renata Adler, Joyce Carol Oates, and David Simon in person and was rather star struck in each case. Forget the Kardashians – these are my kind of celebrities.

David Simon was much as I’d seen/heard him in interviews – eloquent, and self-deprecating. Renata Adler had her classic side ponytail and veered a bit off topic, and Joyce Carol Oates was thin and…I’m not sure how else to describe her but thin and “bookish” looking, taking careful notes on what she was about to read from her latest memoir and looking somewhat startled instead of smiling when people said something funny.

The whole experience was a pleasure.

Not exactly sure – she wasn’t discussing her latest work, but instead was on a panel technically called “Fiction, Memoir, Criticism” where there wasn’t much discussion of either memoir or criticism. But I liked it anyway! 🙂

Robin I love EL Tuberose Gardenia!

Today the temps are much cooler. I’m in HdP Ambre 114. A colleague (who knows zilch about perfume and doesn’t wear any herself) said ‘you smell so good, it’s familiar, like something I wore in junior high — is it Shalimar??’

Now I don’t think HdP smells anything like Shalimar but I was kind of impression that she at least connected 2 orientals!

I have a bad sample addiction (hundreds of samples to try!) but I’m currently marginally making progress– I have tried more samples since moving in mid- May than I have acquired (94 vs 92). Of course, the fall releases will trip me up…..

You and me both for the samples! You sound like you have a good system–I organize everything alphabetically but that means things I haven’t tried are mixed in with stuff I have … should really pull them out and keep a dedicated to-try queue. Would have to make better progress than I am making now! 🙂

Miel de Bois is suddenly of interest to me after having recently seen salmon poached in heated beeswax! Truth be told, the resulting flavor did not strike me as particularly remarkable, so it was a bit of an empty trick on the culinary front, but hot beeswax smelled heavenly! So now I’m emboldened to try more honey scents, which I’ve previously been a little shy about–glad to hear you’re getting on so well with MdB! Anything in particular that makes it so fab?

I theoretically have a separate box of untested samples, but I haven’t done a good job of actually putting anything in that box, so it hasn’t been too effective. 🙂

As for Miel de Bois, I read a lot of less-than-temping reviews, but I find it smooth, golden and sweet (without being cloying). For me, honey strikes the right balance between sexy and edible, and fortunately, doesn’t register as urinous to my nose. Hopefully you’ll have the same luck!

Wrappings! I forgot to add it to my Nordstrom order last night and triple points are over. It was out of stock for the season by the time I thought of it last year (mid-October). I knew there was something else I was going to order, but I waited until too late and the site was slow so I got my order in just before midnight. Grrrr.

I’m wearing the No 22 extrait I’ve just bought and I like it much better than the EdT. No 22 isn’t a natural fit for me, as I have trouble with aldehydes. So I’ve been working on liking it for some time now (don’t ask why, it’s not rational) and I am making progress.

But in the afternoon, I got impatient and sprayed Cristalle all over myself 🙂

No, but I will as soon as I can. I understand that Chanel is opening a beauty boutique down town quite soon, and will stock the Exclusifs, so I’ll make a point of spending some thoughtful time with 22. I must admit, though, that if I were spending some Exclusifs dollars, I am still hankering for Sycomore!

Having had 3 solid days of Penhaligon’s Bluebell while in Edinburgh & Glasgow at the end of last week, I’m giving myself a break today! Husband very impressed with the sample of Blasted Heath I picked up for him – trying to wean him off Paco Rabanne’s Black XS, which he’s used for some years now, but haven’t had much success! Not too impressed with Blasted Bloom – didn’t seem to smell of much at all. Discovered that Jenners in Edinburgh no longer stock Annick Goutal, & Frasers don’t stock the reworked Eau de Ciel, which I was hoping to try as I wore the original years ago – looks like that’ll have to wait for London in December, though I may try Fenwicks in Newcastle when I’m there next month for Steve Earle gig. The trials of living in the north east of Scotland…!

It’s nice and cool here too, so the SOTD is Atelier Blanche Immortelle. I’ve been looking forward to wearing it in the fall. The maple syrup note reminds me of cold winter mornings when I was a kid. My dad would make pancakes, the only thing he could cook, which we would drown in maple syrup. After a weekend of Dior Homme Parfum (just perfect for me) I went lighter today and I’m wearing Dior Homme, the 2005 Olivier Polge “vintage”

It’s feeling more summery today where I am, with tempertures in the upper seventies, so I am wearing Ineke Angel’s Trumpet, something nice & floral.

I’m sampling Bois d;Encens today. It’s truly lovely, very smooth incense with cedar and spices, and not as sweet as Encens Satin. I’d buy it if I didn’t already own so many incenses. I’m trying to pare down, not add more!

Cool here too – although very wet and rainy now so not altogether a good thing. Started in Mimosa and Cardamom which I really like but doesn’t last long, and received a sample of Angelique from Papillon in the post and have tried that. It’s nice but I thought on the notes it would be perfect (mimosa and iris) – I need to try it more to decide.

You’re right. After about 30 minutes, I could no longer smell Mimosa and Cardamom. It’s a shame.

Counting you two, I’ve now heard four people report this! Funny, it lasted a good while (for a JM anyway) on me. IIRC, through a workout, even. Wonder what’s up with that.

Interesting. JM’s Mimosa and Cardamom lasts for most of the workday on me.

It’s muggy and still here so I’m putting my feet up and keeping the kitties company. There are workers here patching some spots on the stucco and they are making scary noise… and finding other expensive things that need to be fixed, so nobody’s happy.
I’m testing AJ Arabia Black IV. Not terrible but far too sweet for me today. I keep looking around for the scented candle; wonder what it is that triggers that for me. Must be a specific aroma chemical. Think I’ll test again in cool weather.

SOTD: MIlle by Patou. I love this stuff, but fades so quickly!

I was at Rose City Comic Con this past weekend,a nd got my picture taken with a Darth Vader cosplayer. He smelled amazing! Turns out he was wearing Guerlain Vetiver. So under that complex costume he still smelled wonderful!

SOTD is PdN L’Eau Mixte. Such a nice one. We had a super hot weekend, but it’s cooled off a tiny bit and we may get some sorely needed rain today. It’s getting cloudy now, so fingers are crossed (also that it is done by rush hour!) Happy Monday everyone!

Sotd is Berdoues Naturelle, a bright eau de cologne (mostly citrus, a touch of herbes de Provence, rose, and a light amber finish). Tested in in Galeries Lafayette in Nice and was happy to discover it costs about $20 for a huge 8 ounce bottle! Cheap and cheerful!

Oh, wow, a poll building on the desert island perfumer/brand idea coming up! I’ve toyed with this idea for years, and I forget who reminded me of it recently by saying they could survive on Jean Claude Ellena’s perfumes if they had to. Even thought I’ve given some thought to the choices before, I’m still not sure. Now that the perfume is about to hit the skin, and I need to delve into further research on the creators of some of my other indispensables. Yay, so excited to see what everyone comes up with!

It suddenly feels like fall here in the DC area – overcast, cool, slightly damp. I was going to put on SSS Tabac Aurea, but AG Vetiver caught my eye, and it’s perfect.

Also, if anyone is interested in a bottle of Aftelier Tango, please see the late split I posted on Saturday’s split meet post. It’s semi-discontinued, i.e., available with a minimum order of two bottles, and I’m looking specifically for someone who would take the second bottle. If that doesn’t work, perhaps I’ll host a more conventional split the next time around.

Has anyone been perfume shopping in the Brussels airport recently? A potential perfume mule has offered to pick up something later this week, if I send detailed instructions, but I’m having a hard time tracking down what the options are… If anyone knows what’s on offer there these days, I’d love to hear it!

The selection is pretty good these days: the usual mainstream suspects, but also Jo Malone, Diptyque, Tom Ford Private Blends (although not everything), Lutens export line. There are no Hermessences, but a very good selection of everything else by Hermes, incuding candles and body products. Also, I think, some of those expensive D&G perfumes that I don’t really know. They usually have some of the classic Guerlains available, too – Mitsouko, L’Heure Bleue, but no Chanel exclusifs. I’m sure I’ve got some of it wrong, but hopefully this is marginally helpful.

It’s on its way to 99 degrees, so I’m in Geranium Odorata by Diptyque. It’s fresh, clean, spicy, herbal, and aromatic. It’s almost minty fresh. It is clean without smelling like detergent. After six hours, I can still smell it without having to stick my nose where I applied it 🙂

I wore that one a lot on vacation last April in Puerto Rico, where it was very hot. It smells like something I’d want to drink. Like some sort of exotic “ade”. Tangy, green, and refreshing.

Sadly, when I got into the car with my husband, he asked me if I had applied perfume recently. That’s never a good sign. I had applied a little bit more to my arms about four hours before he picked me up. After saying some sweet things about my interest in perfume to buffer/soften what he was about to say next, he said that “it smells like perfume, and I mean like PERFUME, and I can taste it in my mouth.” I hope that I didn’t bother any co-workers during a meeting today 🙁

My husband said it smells like Deep Woods Off! I would rather it smell like perfume. Although I think geranium oil might be a natural insect repellent which maybe the plants are so durable.
Anyway, I don’t find it to be perfum-y at all. It smells like natural oils to me.
But those kinds of comments make me self- conscious even when I might love a scent.

Was feeling contrary this morning (boo Monday!) so I skipped wearing perfume. I pulled into the parking lot at work and felt under dressed without scent, so I found an essential oil blend of lime and cedar plus vanilla out of my purse.

    Day saved. 🙂

Read Angela’s piece about the Big Five, which prompted me to a very late application of 1000. (Just can’t do Joy.) This is so strong I couldn’t look at it all summer, but it’s beautiful at the moment.
