Tuesday scent of the day 9/8

Posted by Robin on 8 September 2015 157 Comments

barleans olive leaf

If you have a spare moment, do tell us your fragrance of the day!

Everyone in my house is sick, including me. It seems awfully early for the flu, but that is what it feels like. I am fragrance-free, and planning a long day on the couch reading and watching television.

Reminder: this Friday, 9/11, will be Freedom Friday: wear a scent that says "I’m Free!" to you, in whatever context you choose to define it. (Suggested by Laila)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I was thinking about wearing some vintage Caleche today. I have no idea what the current formulation smells like but this stuff is so effortlessly elegant.

Oh, I feel your pain and hope you are back to being all bright eyed and bushy tailed soon!

I needed a nice soothing scent today and went with PdE Equistrius. Beautiful stuff which is just what the doctor ordered after a less than stellar weekend dealing with a sick dog and a shower drain that I had to get down and dirty with.

I feel a bit traumatized (by the drain debacle) but quite sure I will bounce back just like the dog, who is now feeling better and has even graced me with some tail wags this morning. Hope everyone had a fantastic weekend!

Yes, I find it to be like the eye in a big whopper of a storm- quiet and still, while all around the periphery is chaos and confusion. :)

Knowing my love for most of the other PdE scents it’s weird that I’ve never tried Equistris. I always forget until someone mentions it. I really need to order a sample, it sounds very much like something I would enjoy.

Order a sample! I did, fell in love, hemmed and hawed about a getting a 50ml bottle, and now regret that I never did since PdE is only in 100ml bottles currently.

You could probably crush out Vetiver Dance with a nice strong application of any kind of orange blossom/neroli or citrus fragrance. I like Vetiver Dance, but I find the middle notes to be very orange blossom.

SOTD is Slumberhouse Sana. This is a difficult scent for me– I have to be very specifically in the mood for it or it feels very off. Most of my other scents have a wider spectrum of appeal. Still, when it works, like today, it’s fabulous

So sorry to hear you’re not feeling well, Robin. Get better soon!

I’m wearing my sample of Arquiste Nanban and I like it a lot – leather, spices, woods, smoke, everything. It’s sweeter than most of my leathers, but not too sweet. I think it’s going to be a week of leather (I wore Cuir de Russie yesterday), it’s autumn here and it feels right.

I liked it all the way to the very end: there was a lovely hint of all the nice things still lingering when I got home after a 12+ hours work day. And then I reapplied :) It seems less assertive now than on the first wearing (probably because I’m used to the smell buy now), but still gorgeous, I think.

Oh it sound quite wonderful! I had hesitated because the review said a wisp of cumin which turns me off immediately.

I’m have no issues with cumin (in fact there are almost no deal-breakers for me, which possibly makes me less than ideal for recommending things) and I didn’t pick it out when smelling, but it’s possible it’s there. I’ll see if I can double check, but my 7 year old daughter has used up most of my sample :)

It’s supposed to be over 100 degrees all this week. My husband is NOT happy because he is teaching a birding class and he is leading a field trip for it on Saturday. The birds will not be as active and his students will be miserable.

Olfactive Studio Lumiere Blanche. Love the creaminess, but hoping the anise fades a bit.

Question for my fellow sample fiends: How long does it take you to go through a sample vial? I swear these things last forever and I can’t understand it, since they’re so tiny!

I get 4 or 5 proper wears (wearings?) out of 1 ml usually, but a lot more if I only dab a tiny amount.

It depends on spray vs. dab. I was getting about 6 wears from the dab vials (1mL), but then started using a bunch more juice at a time in order to get better longevity and a better feel for the scent. So now I’m getting about 3 wears out of 1mL.

The 2-3 mL sprays last about 4 wears, I think.

I shifted this way too, and I recommend it. First, you don’t have so many vials in your life. Second, you make up your mind faster if you want to get to know it better, based on fuller information. I don’t like finishing a sampling day realizing that I can’t form an opinion of the scent because I just didn’t wear enough of it. Sometimes I use the whole thing at one time.

I’ll be curious to hear how the Lumière Blanche develops for you–I just tried it for the first time this weekend and I was impressed by the staying power, but then, I didn’t particularly notice the anise (could fully be a failure of my not-particularly-attuned nose!) I couldn’t decide whether it was smthg I needed to wear again…

Same tho, abt samples lasting so long, especially dabbers, as Ajda mentioned. Plus even when I really like something, it’s rare that I would wear it, I don’t know, 10 days in a row! More like 10 days over months or more. So then a ml or two feels like it’s lasted an impossibly long time!

I’m sure I only noticed the anise because I REALLY dislike licorice/anise notes. :) Now that the spices have faded away, it’s mostly powdery and creamy with a bit of almond. I honestly think I’d love the scent if I could swap out the anise for an amplification of the other spices (which I couldn’t smell at all today).

I can’t really speak to the longevity because almost all scents last all day on me (even with the three little dauber smears I put on each arm). The good news, at least, is that I like its later stages a lot…. though, like you, I’m not sure how many more times I’ll wear it, given my issues with the opening.

So, De Bachmakov today- such a fabulous zesty /floral/ herbal/ figgy delight, and Natori tonight (a blind buy inspired by Ihadanidea’s and others love for it). It’s actually much nicer than I expected- and so worth the little money it cost!

I’ve found the 2ml samples on ebay for small bucks, if you don’t want to jump in with both feet. I love the top/heart of Natori but it gets a bit Youth Dew (i.e., Kiss of Death for me) in the base.

It took me quite a few years to come around to Natori – I had a small decant from when it came out. As time went on, it really grew on me as a very well done, elegant fragrance. I decided to buy a bottle last year b/c its not longer in production, but still easy to find. You’d have to like aldehydes, plummy notes and patchouli. If you like those, the odds are you will like Natori. If you don’t end up liking it, it would be very easy to swap off at one of the swapmeets. IMHO, Natori fragrance is what the Coco Noir edp should have smelled like.

I can’t stand Youth Dew b/c of that unpleasant “Pepsi” accord that is in some orientals. I don’t get any of that from of Natori, but there is a bit of patch down there.

So sorry you aren’t feeling well… I got curious – Olive Leaf sounds like something I might need to acquire and start taking…

Hot, humid and just plain icky here. I’m so looking forward to fall! Starbucks outside my office bldg. has a big sign that the Pumpkin Spice Lattes are back… That just sounds horrible in this weather – oh how I wish the weather made that sound appealing.

As a result, I’m in OJ Frangipani. I’ve been a broken record this summer on that fragrance when it’s hot, hot, hot out. There’s a sharpness I wouldn’t normally like, but in the heat comes off as crisp.

It’s too early to get my hands on the new Carven, so I’m left contemplating between Byredo Seven Veils, which I’ve sampled, or a blind buy of JM Mimosa and Cardamom. Is anyone able to tell me if the JM is anything like Mimosa Pour Moi?

I have never smelled Mimosa Pour Moi, but the folks at Fragrantica describe it as “green.” The JM Mimosa and Cardamom is not green, IMO.

The most excellent mimosa Essences Insensees Diptyque is delicately green.

The mimosa EI is just totally puffy, swoon-y gorgeous! I want to smell the new jasmine one….

As regards all these mimosa frags – I think that Mimosa Pour Moi (which I also like very much) has a noticeable dry powdery almond accord in the middle. It’s more noticeable to me if I do a side by side with the Diptyque which is more dewy and green, but still powdery.

The CEO had strep throat all last week, and he was a positive pill to take care of – he felt awful. I’m just glad none of the rest of us got it. Here’s hoping that the bug leaves your house soon, Robin.

I’m going through one of my periodic addicted-to-one-perfume stages again: nothin’ but Safari. You know, I reapply the same scent so rarely, I forget how wonderful it is to smell the same fragrance in several stages all at once. I’ll be ready to move on in a few days, I’m sure, but for now I’m enjoying the palimpsest.

For my 2¢, Marni Rose has a brightness (I’d say ‘freshness’ if it weren’t such an abused descriptor!) that is the main way it differs from Marni. They’re def related (and wear nicely together!), in terms of a light, veil-of-scent-style rose, but if Marni has a little bit of warmth, even a slightly nutty quality, Marni Rose switches that out for a bit of mint. It’s very good, I think–there are a ton of summerweight rose scents out there at this point, and I think Marni Rose is really one of the more interesting takes on this theme!

I’d say C.H.’s assessment is pretty accurate. There is a bit of grapefruit in the top, and the mint really isn’t distinct. I pick it up a bit every once in a while, but it’s not like a toothpaste-y mint, it’s greener, like a fresh mint leaf.

Totally–it’s not like spearmint (at all) but just adds a bright green quality.

I’ve been putting fresh mint leaf on raspberries this summer and it doesn’t taste minty per se but just gives the berries a bit more brightness. The effect in Marni Rose is similar!

I started out the day sampling Hermes Iris Ukiyoe, and I very much liked the light cool florals, and by the time I got to work, it was gone baby gone, so then I replenished from the little stock of samples I keep at work for just such emergencies. :-)

I dabbed on Dame’s Desert Rose and it is also light and floral and sort of cool to begin with, and now at lunch time, the backs of my hands are all gentle powdery sweetness, and I like this very much! I will be interested to see how much longer it lasts.

If it disappears soon, I am going to refresh with Rose Infernall! Enough of these delicate disappearing fragrances! LOL!

    Question for this great group:
I will be in New York City in November. Of course I will stop by Aedes and all the other great stores (Saks, Neiman, Bregdorf, etc.) but is there some hidden gem place that is a must for parfume shopping in Manhattan?
Maybe a place that carries vintage? A discount place?
    Thanks.

I’d also love to hear about places that carry vintage!

There are tons of discount places. With a big caveat emptor, I’d recommend the strip on and near Broadway, south of 34th Street. I’ve never bought anything there, but I’ve shopped it a few times. It’s a good alternative to online discounters (similar stock and comparable prices) for when you want to be able to briefly sniff the juice. If you ask, often the staff will open a box or two for you and spritz into the cap or onto the cardboard. Some places let you haggle. Beware the usual gray (I don’t know, is it merely gray?) market problems, and the fact that these stores are unlikely to accept returns.

        I’m also up for a visiting platinum meet-up. :)

I’m back to the scent world after a long and hot summer (mainly wearing vetivers) and for starters I’m positively impressed with Ormonde Jayne. Only last week they started promoting the Vanille d’iris samples and I had one yesterday in my mailbox! And I like (love?) it, a warm iris (rather leathery) with just a touch of non-too-sweet vanilla -a serious contender for my ultimate iris scent.

I was pretty aggressive a few years ago getting older back up bottles of Coco – edp, edt, extrait – so I’ve not really smelled the current. I should see what’s what though next time I’m in Macys. I’ve read elsewhere that the base notes are just not as complex. Sorry I can’t help!!!

I really only like the edp of Kelly Caleche – the edt is too celeryish and dry, and I think I need the extra dollop of rose in the edp. But I do really like the edp, so great for summer.

I never cared for the edt either – too vegetal – it just never worked for my nose. Like it couldn’t make up it’s mind what it wanted to be and all those herbs just fought with the light leather… so I’m glad I like the edp b/c I don’t have any JCE frags!!! It actually makes me think of it as a dress down Cuir de Lancome!

I think it grew on me for a few reasons. First I just like it much more than the edt version which I’ve tested quite a few times over the years and never really enjoyed. The edp smells more “whole” to my nose. And also b/c I’ve grown to like leathers over the years by gradually working my way into them with some frags that have very light leather accords (like Vol de Nuit), and then gradually moving up, and also with learning to really like vetiver which in some frags has a bit of a sharp leathery smell. I give Bottega Veneta a lot of credit here, and then I also give the original Donna Karan aka “Signature” some nods b/c I’ve always liked that fragrance, which has a fairly big leather/suede accord, but it is so juicy and oriental that it kind of bridges a few genres….Then, I really was surprised this past spring how much I love Cuir de Lancome which is such a complex, elegant leather fragrance, IMHO it has some similar, but lighter accords, as Kelly Caleche edp. So, I guess I kind of fell into KC edp backwards. I still can’t do big leather, but a little leather is good enough!

I’m sampling Chaparral solid perfume from Roxana Illuminated. I think I read that Impromptu (the camphor into labdanum slide I slid the other day) arose from the development of Chaparral, and I see the connection. There is a lot less camphor in this one! But there’s some, and it plays an interesting role, somehow raising and pointing out some other notes, more woodsy and dry and dusty. It’s a neat trick! I think the toned-down labdanum in this is doing something similar from below. Chaparral is also much quieter than Impromptu, but I was wearing both the liquid and solid versions of Impromptu. This is really very lovely. Roxana is two for two in my book so far.

I don’t know the real chaparral personally, but this is a convincing rendition of my ideal notion of chaparral. Does anyone happen to know this perfume and its namesake, and care to compare?

While digging for the sample I found that my sample of Cuir Ottoman had turned to a sludgy mess so I added 99% alcohol to it to make some homebrew lampe berger fuel. I’ll let it steep and see how it turns out.

I picked up yesterday’s shirt to throw it in the hamper and it smelled soooo good. I had to think for a moment to remember that I wore VC&A Lys Carmin. Today I’m wearing Seville a L’Aube; from the notes I should love it, but I’ve tried it four or five times and it just doesn’t grab me. Sorry y’all are under the weather!
I just finished edging the lawn (mowing is NOT my job and I’m sticking to it but I couldn’t stand the shagginess) and showering. Today is supposed to be our last really hot day which is great except that I seem to be getting the headache that always accompanies the first cold front of the season.
I was commando because I was planning on doing some shopping but have just applied some November in the Temperate Deciduous Forest and put my jammie’s back on. I’m sitting on the patio, being screamed at by a mockingbird who has picked up a bluejay curse word or two, and irresponsibly contemplating a bottle of La Treizieme Heure for my birthday. What I actually need is a new pair of jeans since I tore my old favorites and they’re beyond repair, but who wants to shop for jeans – yuck. I’ll probably just be responsible, get another decant and go squeeze myself into some denim but I’m enjoying the idea of a splurge.

Thanks! It’s actually tomorrow but I wanted to get a head start.

Sballo in oil form was my scent of the day. I love wearing oil perfumes in hot weather.

Wore Le Labo Fleur d’Oranger 27 today, in unspeakable humidity. Nice pick.

My eagerness for fall has manifest in clothes rather than perfume…in the past week bought both a pair of (short) black boots and a “Le Smoking” – always wanted one. Getting anxious though. Headed to the Harvest Festival at Monticello this weekend. Think it will be cooler one state north? Yeah, I know, probably not.
