Friday scent of the day 8/28

Posted by Robin on 28 August 2015 245 Comments

sunflower

Friday, finally. Our community project for today: as the summer winds down, wear a fragrance that says "Summer 2015" to you. (If it's winter where you are, wear a fragrance that says "Winter 2015" to you.) What did you pick?

As always, do chime in with your scent of the day even if you’re not participating in the community project.

I am lame, I know, but I'm wearing Estee Lauder Bronze Goddess Whipped Body Creme. One version of Bronze Goddess or another is my default / no brainer fragrance every summer.

Reminder: next Friday, 9/4, will be Back to School Friday...wear a perfume that says 'back to school' to you, or that says you mean business, or ....?

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

I’m commando for now, but about to be wearing Orange Sanguine. What else for Summer 2015? Will be offline all weekend. Going to go camp and make ice cream in the woods. Hope everyone has a great end-of-summer weekend.

I share your love for Bronze Goddess, Robin, but what I wore most this summer was various Annick Goutals, including my SOTD Rose Splendide. It looks like we’re going to have a beautiful weekend here in Virginia, I wish the same for everyone else!

Nothing was quite right today, probably because I ran out of coffee. And the little dab of Lipstick Rose I had put on yesterday evening (and even almost ordered a travel spray because it looked like it was finally working for me – mistake) was still yelling at me from my forearm this morning.
However, I finally had my coffee, two kids are napping at the same time and one is visiting a friend and I am wafting Seville a l’Aube. Aaaahh.

This has been my summer of sampling. I am wearing Lorenzo Villoresi Ylang-Ylang which I first tried on a hot summer day at Colonial Drug which is now in a much more inconvenient location but which I had to visit since I’m back to living in Boston. My actual sample I obtained at Twisted Lily the last time I visited NY. That sums things up– thrilled and happy to be back in Boston but missing NY perfume shopping

Winter 2015 was an atypical perfume season for me, with more fresh and green than cozy and sweet. So, as I bought it at the beginning of winter and have worn it quite frequently, Im in Diptyque Virgilio. It does kinda smell like a herb garden in the rain.

I’m curious – do Aussies pronounce the h in “herb” as the British do (and Americans don’t)? (Yes, word-nerd here.)

None that I’ve ever encountered, no. Isn’t that interesting? I wonder why we dropped the h – maybe because of French influences in the southern part of the country?

Interesting. I drop the h in honest (awwnest) and herb (‘urb) but I have the h in horse, and house, for example. Never really thought about when the sound goes and when it stays…I am originally from Wyoming, Northern Rockies area…

The only U.S. “h” variation I can think of is when it’s followed by a “u.” My father (of Midwestern/Great Plains parentage, although a Californian) says “yuman” and “yumid.”

Perthgirl, the temperatures in Perth are far higher than here, and I’m curious: do you think that you could wear “winter weight” perfumes in your summer, or can you only reverse seasons in one direction?

Waterdragon, even the thought scares me 😉
If i get the odd craving as im apt to do, i can satisfy these on cool nights. If there are any. I do love some of what most folk would think as winter scents in summer, such as Epic, and a whole list of heady white florals. But not likely gourmands or ambers etc.
Last night was cool so i did wear my ‘other’ winter 2015 regular, Ambre Dore, so i guess it hasnt been a totally unseasonal winter

I contemplated Terracotta, because it was something I loved this summer. EL BG was looking at me also.

But…I went with OJ Frangipani, because it was something I wore quite frequently this summer. It probably represents my go-to this summer. I wasn’t too sure about it when I got it (blind buy) but it grew on me.

I had quite the floral summer I think. Other favorites were Diorissimo, Stella McCartney, Seville a L’Aube.

I wear Mitsouko on pulse points in the winter. In the summer, I tend to spray once into the air and walk through it, and then later when I shake my head, I get a little whiff of green goodness…

I’ve spent much of the whole summer in Terracotta, Un Lys Lys Soleia or Ostara , it seems. But I dabbed on Mitsouko last night and was loving it. I always remember the first time, 40+ years ago, that I sprayed it on at a friend’s apartment before work and loved it but was overwhelmed [a few sprays!] by the strange, different, peachy oriental. But I’m getting it now!

Also – though I didn’t have a chance to respond yesterday, I noticed that Petunia said the Natori doesn’t last on her, and I was so surprised because it’s one of the few that actually lasts on me. I wonder what might be causing the difference, because my skin always eats everything else…

Also, Karen B., I second what everyone said yesterday – wear whatever you please and forget the haters. Do you 🙂

Hey there ihadanidea, I just bought my bottle about three months ago from a discounter. Is it possible that your bottle is prereformulation? It’s a beautiful scent but I really can’t smell it after an hour. It does last a bit better when sprayed on my clothes but even then, it’s a soft scent. I guess I could be anosmic to some part of it. I can’t smell Bruno Acampora’s musc after 10 minutes either. ????

This is fascinating – but I’m so sorry it doesn’t stick around for you! All of my bottles (I bought several from December of 2014 to May of 2015 because they were so cheap) were purchased from different places (HauteLook, Amazon, and I think Beauty Encounter) and they all smell the same to me. And as I mentioned, this is one of the rare scents that actually sticks to me, so I’m grateful. Do we know when the reformulation happened?

Always interesting to see what different noses do and how each person’s skin responds.

I thought I read somewhere that people noticed a difference in the scent’s longevity but I don’t remember if they mentioned when it happened. So I don’t know… I wore it to bed last night and was sure to spray it on my PJ’s and I can still smell it this morning. This scent is so pretty and a bit retro. It reminds me of plum champagne because it smells so effervescent, even hours later.

I bought my small bottle last fall from-Amazon and then liked it so much I got a bigger backup. My sister did the same. I haven’t opened the bigger one, but the small one lasts a long time on me. There are a number of us here who love the plummy goodness!

Hello all! I haven’t been around lately but poked my head in to see I’m wildly off topic – it was so cool out when I dropped my boyfriend at work at 6:30 am that I came home and doused myself in Coco. Just totally over-the-top, ready for fall. It’s supposed to be muuuch warmer later today so we’ll see how that goes!

Had I checked, I would be in Terracotta or Orange Sanguine I think 🙂 Maybe my Alien flanker…Eau Extraordinaire? They all got a lot of wear this summer 🙂

It’s been a difficult year and summer has been rather bumpy as well. So most of the time, rather than going for my usual fruity/tropical floral choices, I’ve practically been living in the original Narciso Rodriguez For Her edp. I can’t think of too many other perfumes I own that are so comforting to me, and I treated myself to a set with a 100ml bottle for Mother’s Day and wear it all the time.

It’s one of those lovely perfumes that goes everywhere, lasts well, and smells wonderful on the sheets. I love slipping into bed and getting a gentle waft of it as I settle in to read before sleep.

I hope everyone’s had a great summer (or winter) and that the next season is even better.

Thanks, everyone. Perfume is such a fine way to boost the mood or provide comfort when needed, isn’t it? I’m thinking of treating myself to some Chinatown or Pure Poison since they’re so perfect for the upcoming autumn here. Especially Chinatown, which blends so well with the fragrance of burning leaves and crisp autumn air.

I went with My Lemon Blend, which ended up being my go-to scent for sleep all summer. It’s jojoba oil with a bunch of EOs, most prominently lemon, black pepper, ylang and sandalwood. Other contenders included DSH Pompeii water-based spray, my hydrosols, Hindu Honeysuckle from Providence Perfume Co., and 4711.

More like not a proper title, for this not a proper perfume. This blend was a mistake. Since I hate chucking perfume, I kept trying until I found the perfect use for it: sleepytime, summer edition. Could be a flanker for the tea…. except it truly doesn’t merit a title as it is. However, it could be tweaked.

I might do that after I complete the perfume I’ve been working on that has the snazzy title. I love my latest top accord, so now I need to bite the bullet and mix it with my base accord (1:1? decisions, decisions!) and find out if that ruins everything. From what I’ve learned so far, it often does.

Yes, very nice. Ylang 49 can be a heavy hitter, so the oil is a good alternative to wearing the perfume sometimes. Plus its very moisturizing. I even rub some on the ends of my hair to help with the frizzies sometimes.

I still love the perfume, but two sprays of it in the evening is enough.

Kerosene Pretty Machine — and it sure is pretty, and very long-lasting. Also, Kerosene probably makes one of my most favorite perfume bottles, they’re so cute.

Also, if anybody was wondering, this last month selling perfume decants on Ebay has been really quite lucrative (surprisingly so) and fun! I haven’t been flagged yet so we shall see how it continues in the future! 🙂

I wanted to add that I am pretty stoked because, after months of dealing with a Labor Relations/Reasonable Accommodations person our HR office who has been unhelpful, unresponsive, and treated me like a burden, I finally got an automatic door button/disabled access button on the door to my workplace.

Thanks. I am in the U.S.; I work for the government, have a doctor’s note, and have approval by my management for the door button. I was on the verge of filing a complaint with Fair Employment and Housing. Thankfully, it did not come to that. When I broached the topic with Fair Employment and Housing, they told me that, even if your reasonable accommodation request is approved by your manager, that your employer has no deadline for actually acting on it.

It was an ordeal, and I can only imagine how much harder it is for folks who work in the private sector 🙁

The ADA… it is changing all our lives… but very slowly. Hopefully it will be easier for the next person at your place of employment because of your experience.

Oddly enough, it might have been easier in the private sector – at least in a big company. Threat of law suits or regulatory disobedience seem to carry a fair amount of weight. It may also vary by region. I’m often surprised by the lack of accommodation in NYC vs SF. Some of that is just older infrastructure I think… For example, no handicap stall on my floor here – unheard of in our SF office.

Glad you got it resolved. It feels like a case of the shoemaker’s children not having any shoes. I don’t even think the button should be considered reasonable accommodation. Unless the government and/or a workplace with fewer than x workers are exempt, providing a way for the physically-challenged to enter a workplace is a requirement – why dud you even have to ask for it (asking rhetorically)?

This was a summer – I should say is a summer – because in Texas summer lasts into October sometimes… anyway this summer I wore a lot of different things because I have been buying decants, samples and minis like crazy. But what I’ve been reaching for the most consistently are my 4711 Acqua Colonias. I have several, and some I love and some are just so-so. This summer Melissa & Verbena moved from just so-so into the love category. However, today I chose to wear Blood Orange & Basil, possibly in response to missionista’s post. In my opinion, Blood Orange & Basil is just as good as Orange Sanguine, and boy is it cheaper. I have Orange Sanguine, but when I want a juicy orange scent I go for either Mandarine & Cardamom or Blood Orange & Basil. I love them both.

The dry down lasts for 3-4 hours, but I miss the Coca-Cola ‘zing!!!’ lime and lemon top notes.

Nick, I have to ask. Are you referring to your colleagues, an infestation of rodents in your workplace, or are you in some field where you work with rodents? I’m sure I’m leaving out other possibilities … but I love the phrase “stifling rodents’ piss smell” regardless.

Hahaha literally rodents. My not-so-likable colleagues? Noo that would be too mean. I work – or rather, worked – with them in my field. Biology. So, there was usually pungent urinous smell. The worst part is that it sticks to you if you have been to the facilities. Shower before I leave work!

    Hi everyone,
I’d forgotton about the theme today, and am wearing vintage Diorella, which i purchased with much excitement and anticipation from ebay.
I am reluctant to admit that i was rather disappointed, i didn’t get ‘garbage’ exactly, but something faintly urinous in the heart, this wouldn’t have put me off however, if the rest was wonderful, but no, i just don’t like it that much, so sad!. I sampled cristalle edt for first time last week, & loved that one, wish i’d got that instead..
On the subject of garbage, i have been searching for my precious sample of By killian’s Beyond Love, my toddler has put it somewhere and i am desperate [like a drug addict, going through the bin!] to get it back, this really was love, but sadly also unaffordable right now!

Oh man, this summer. Finished grad school; took the summer off to temp and live with my beloved partner to store up some good memories for the year we must now spend apart while I complete my clinical fellowship a millionty-twelve miles away. It is also the summer I fell in love with vintage perfume and with Diorella in particular. So that is my choice for Summer 2015 – fleeting and complicated and hard to pin down, a little melancholy, but also joyful and also just right.

    And also good for packing.

I have been mostly lurking around here for the past few weeks since I was so busy preparing my wedding as well as the new semester. I got married last Saturday and it was honestly one of the most amazing days of my life. It turned out to be exactly how we hoped it would, and I do believe everyone had a great time (even those who were slightly skeptical about the non-traditional way we wanted to celebrate). I ended up buying a bottle of Bois des Iles extrait for the day (which is also my SOTD), after having used a Mysore Sandalwood soap, since it was the one my now husband liked the most among those I made him sniff. (Another choice for today’s theme would have been Beige, as it probably was the sample I tested most often during the Summer). That little bottle seems so precious to me now!

To my surprise it’s been Cartier Zeste de Soleil. I bought it at a discounter last year thinking it would be good for the occasional spritz, as a I am not a cologne fan, but it’s been in fairly constant use during this hot, dry summer (which seems to have ended abruptly toothy – thank goodness for rain).

Strangely, my most-worn summer 2015 perfume wasn’t BG or Terracotta, but a tie between Eau de Merveilles and California Reverie. I’m wearing Reverie today. Reverie is so pretty and undemanding, it’s great in summer because it’s never too much in the heat.

The Van Cleef ones seem to fly a little more under the radar. But why wouldn’t they make great scents? Their jewelry windows are like viewing beautiful art. So creative!

I’ve been commando the last week or so for no rational reason I can discern. The weather has recently been beautiful here in DC, but this is usually my least favorite time of year as the summer is ending and it reminds me of the yucky feeling I always had about returning to school.

I sampled a LOT over the summer, and found a few new loves, some definite big fat NOs and a ton of mehs. Later on today I will dump on the rest of my eensie sample of Iniezione di Morfina from Twisted Lily to decide whether or not it is fbw, as their $30 off expires 8/31. I’m not sure whether or not I want to love it as much as I have thus far, or whether I’ll be relieved to pass on it for now and hope it shows up at STC. 😉

I do tend to think that if you’re not head-over-heels, you likely won’t much notice its absence if you don’t get it… And, for that matter, Twisted Lily seems to do specials a few times a year, so you could just wait a few months to see whether you miss it…

BUT. I also note that a splitmeet is coming up. You could go ahead and order the bottle to hold ’til then, with the idea that if there’s interest, you could make a few splits and “spend down” some of the 100ml of juice (since that’s a lot, it’s true.) It’s not a guarantee, but maybe a way to make buying a bottle *feel* more sensible?? Just, if you need encouragement in that direction 🙂

I am over summer and refuse to pay it ANY sort of homage by wearing a favorite perfume!

Instead, I want to welcome fall and hurry it to this southern clime by wearing Kalemat! So looking forward to opening windows, breathing fresh air, and not working up a sweat by simply blinking. I love fall and all things associated with it! I am keeping a sharp eye on Erika and hoping it dissipates before making landfall. Yep, I’m over hurricanes and tropical depressions too!

    Have a great weekend all!

Goutal’s Vetiver cologne for me this morning. I have to repeat myself, but it has been the Summer of Vetiver for me. We had an extraordinarily hot and dry summer and vetiver felt so cooling and bracing in the heat.
It is finally raining today and forecast to continue through the week. I’ve never been so happy to hear that, hoping this will put out the hundreds of fires in the province!

Vetiver is great because its crispness is like opening the door of a freezer, and at the same time it stands up to AC.

O de L’Orangerie today! I’ve worn lots of scents this summer, but looking back, this and Chanel’s Bel Respiro were probably the VIPs of Summer 2015. My summer scents and transitional scents are likely to come in handy for at least another month, since September can be very hot here…

Is anyone surprised? It is so easy to wear, works well in the heat, transitions well from heat to cool, work to play, etc. my second choice would have been Atelier Cologne Sous le toit de Paris.

This spring I got a bottle of I Profumi di Firenze Limone di Sicilia in Florence, and it instantly became my Summer 2015 go-to: it’s very simple and linear, but incandescently lemony, with a big helping of bitter pith. Italian sunshine in a bottle. Glorious.

I couldn’t decide on what to wear that would signify summer of 2015 to me. So I went with an old favourite Delrae’s Amoureuse. A gorgeous perfume but I loathe the name. Far to cheesy for my tastes. “The Bombe” would have been more to my liking 🙂

I haven’t ever tried feverfew. I never have found any medication to be as effective for me as a skin-blisteringly hot shower, a dark quiet room, and a huge handful of ibuprofen (yuck, but sometimes you gotta take bad stuff), and two B complex vitamins. No Rx has ever worked and been worth the side effects. This, thankfully, didn’t turn into a migraine but it was plenty bad. A nap on the sofa under a kitten seems to have mostly kicked it’s butt.
We went on a Bat Cat hunt yesterday in neighbors’ yards, looking for clumps of fur or remains of any kind, and it was incredibly hot and stressful. I don’t know if I mentioned it but we found his collar and it was bloody but we have found no fur, blood trail, or signs of ground disturbance so we are braced for the worst but not giving up on finding something conclusive. I did hire an expert cat finder as a consultant and it was worth every penny. If anyone ever looses a cat I can’t recommend her highly enough! I have game cameras out and motion detectors and the neighbors think I’m loon but I don’t care.

My Summer fragrance for 2015 is without a doubt Bronze Goddess by Estee Lauder. I loved the fabulous whipped body cream. It lasts all day and longer than the perfume itself. I hope that now summer is coming to an end it doesn’t mean I have to stop wearing it. I love that stuff. That was the best thing about summer for me.

It’s not really a summer perfume, but I was delighted by Skive, from Canoe Goods, the first 2015 launch that I’ve loved. Other scents I particularly enjoyed this summer were Bruno Fazzolari Lampblack, AG Ninfeo Mio, Miller Harris Fleurs de Sel, and EL Private Collection.

I also chanced upon two layering combos:
    EL Private Collection + Azemour
Prada Infusion d’Iris + CSP Bois de Copaiba

Hello. I’d love to be at a party with all of you–it would be like being in the best sort of scented garden. And the conversations would be fabulous fun! My scent of this winter is a true love: Black Cashmere. I’ve worn it a lot in this unusually cold season, and I’ve enjoyed every aspect of it every time. That said, I thought I’d organise my perfumes a bit better today and start putting my winter loves up higher so as to make room at eye-level for cooler ones. Of course, I’m hoping to start a new perfume affaire with a re-discovered wonder.

I’m late to the party, again – these are the last days of my vacation, so I’ve been running around, away from the computer. Somewhat surprisingly, I think my scent of the summer was A la Nuit. I knew it was gorgeous, of course, but when I bought a bottle, I didn’t really think I’d wear it several times a week. One reason for this might be that I drained my bottle of SL Fleurs d’Oranger, usually a summer staple for me. So I guess another SL filled the gap. Anyway, I have adored wearing it. A few days ago I smelled my blouse that still held the scent of A la Nuit and felt a stab (seriously, it was almost physical) of intense pleasure – a reminder of why I’m into this perfume thing.

We don’t get hot summers in my part of the world – I read lots of your comments about the awful heat of summer and dream of being too hot!! I spend most of summer feeling cold, because I am so determined to wear summer clothes in summer that I don’t dress at all appropriately for the conditions.
I go for perfumes that make me think of flowers and sunshine (even if heavy and warm would be more suitable) and as the weather warms up here, I’m looking forward to Chant d’Arome, Le Temps d’Une Fete, a few Annick Goutals …

Just back home from a few days in the Big Smoke – Auckland (NZ) – where I had one hour to speed date all the perfumes I have read about but never sniffed.
At one point I had all of the following on various parts of my arms…if you had one of those UV light/luminol gadgets i would have been glowing in a dangerous way:

Arquiste: Anima Dulcis, Flor y Canto
    L’artisan: Traversee du Bosphore
Olfactive Studio: Lumiere Blanche, Auto Portrait
    Bella Freud: 1970
    Serge Lutens: Bas de Soie.

    Plus various paper tests…

In one shop I was told I smelled great and was asked what I was wearing ( proof that layering your perfumes does not have to be a fine art). Saved myself over $1000 by not buying anything – though was tempted by Traversee du Bosphore (except it was in 100ml only) and Lumiere Blanche . Fantastic art exhibition by Lisa Reihana …somehow perfectly matched by my perfume.

Today the very first daffodil has opened in my garden.
What a happy perfume end to winter!

I’m wearing and wore Nuxe Oil the most this summer, having found it for 7$ at a drugstore just as I was running out of Aftelier Ancient Resins oil…the bottle is 2/3rds finished, just since the early spring. Besides that, this will probably have been the summer of Poivre 23 (almost ran out of my decant) and Vetiver Pour Elle (thanks AnnieA). I’ll probably put on one of those two soon.
