Wednesday scent of the day 8/26

Posted by Robin on 26 August 2015 187 Comments

Pink grapefruit

Happy Women's Equality Day! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Parfum d'Empire Yuzu Fou.

Reminder: this Friday, 28 August, as the summer winds down, wear a fragrance that says "Summer 2015" to you. (If it's winter where you are, wear a fragrance that says "Winter 2015" to you.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Wearing Chanel Eau Premiere today. It seems appropriate since I have been reading Mademoiselle Chanel. Just curious if any of you have read it and what you thought. I am about 1/3 of the way into it and like it so far.

I really, really like Eau premiere #5- it’s fresh and light enough to wear year round, but it does not read as rich and heavy as #5. This to me reads as a fresh, elegant scent.

Chanel Eau Premiere is one of my favorite scents. So beautiful!

I have Mademoiselle Chanel on my “to be read” list. I hope to get to it soon.

I’ve not read Mademoiselle Chanel yet, but I should. I love Eau Premiere. It was my gateway to No 5, so it’s very special to me.

Bois des Iles parfum for me today.

Stopped in Le Labo yesterday to try their Santal 33 and 16 hours later plus a shower I can still smell it on my arm. I love the scent – creamy sandalwood with some leather, but I’m scared to wear it with this kind of longevity!

Almost panicked when I saw that there’s going to be an aquatic day next month but then I remembered that I have a couple of natural perfume samples that use seaweed so I’ll be fine. Whew (I really like the community projects)

Lol! I’ll just dab some Listerine on my pulse points. That mimics an aquatic quite well.
SOTD for me is CdG Luxe Series: Patchouli. It’s the edp and honestly smells nothing like patchouli. Honestly it smells more like salty pretzels. And dust bunnies.

I guess the thought of aquatics is to blame.

Cool mornings again! But still warm in the days once the sun is up. I was a lazy bones and did not exercise, so needed a morning shower to get going. The Body Shop shower gel in Moringa (fresh white flowers) and Jour de Hermes absolu, which is just very, very pretty.

LfdB is so gorgeous! I used just a dab of my small decant for the evening on Monday. You should still get SSS Rose Musc – not the same at all!!! (I’m trying to get my enabler’s pin!!)

Good job! Extra points toward the pin. 🙂

Actually, I probably would already have a little bottle of SSS RM, but she has her ordering site “closed down for a little break.” I am waiting patiently for her to bring it up again…And by the time it is back up, I probably will have worked myself up to get the 35ml bottle, rather than the 17 ml bottle I was going for last time.

LFDB has now moved from powdery flowery into the sweetish, but not too sweet dry down, where I actually detect, upon close sniffing of the back of my hand, another hint of rose. This stuff is just great!

I seem to be on a rose kick. It is going to be cool here with a chance of rain tomorrow – I believe i will wear Rose Infernalle…

No scent yet today… working from home so will be testing samples in a while.

A couple of days ago I was in Costco and noticed that they had a ‘designer fragrances’ pallet. Somehow a bottle of Tom Ford Black Orchid jumped into my cart, and I had to take it home with me 🙂 Nice price, $50 for 50ml.

Hermes Cuir de Ange. I was disappointed with it the first time I tried it, but I’m much more taken with it now. Not sure if it’s the perfect weather or altered expectations. I can understand why several reviewers compare it to another JCE, FM Eau d’Hiver, not so much in terms of the specific notes, but the same kind of glowing cloud effect.

There are two drawbacks that make me think my two sample vials will be sufficient. First, it is very linear. Second, it smells appetizing, like leather ganache, so it keeps prompting me to look for a snack, which I don’t need. Does anyone else get that, or find that other perfumes give them snack cravings?

Wearing another of my recent Lucky Scent samples, French perfumer Divine’s Divine. It’s supposed to be a white floral musk, but on me it’s all about the rose, with a rather raspy oakmoss. Pretty, but I already have vintage Revlon Intimate and they are very similar to my nose.

I do–right after the aldehydes vanish, there’s a distinct rose note that sticks around a few minutes, but then gets subsumed into the blend, where I have a hard time picking it out.

Thanks! I had that experience today with La Fuite des Heures, and I’m thinking this fleeting rose note in floral aldehydes is a widespread pattern. If it’s true, I want to know why!

I’m with you on never being without the bottled perfection of BdI. In fact, I’m going to take your sage advice. I noticed the other day that I am powering through my beautiful but impractical dab bottle of the extrait, so when I’m in Sydney next week, I’m going to buy a 75ml spray of the EdP.

As a fellow lover of BdI, I’ll just come out and say it–I don’t like the EdT. It seems a pale imitation of the plush, spicy woodiness of the parfum. You could put your extrait in an atomizer if you don’t like dabbing…?

    Gosh it’s hot today.

Slate mentions Malin + Goetz in an article on hotel toiletries. I could use some Citron Vert today. And a vacay at the Drake. 😀

The 21c Museumhotel (I’ve been to the one in Bentonville AR) provides Malin + Goetz toiletries, along with a rubber duckie. One of the airlines, I forgot which one, features this brand for the first class dopp kit. I love the toiletries but the colognes / perfumes seem too sheer for my taste. I’ll have to retry the next time at Barneys.

Hello, all. I’m going to wear something sharp and crisp today, if I ever get myself moving. It’s not really the weather for it yet, but I think it will be Cristalle. I need clarity, because yesterday’s horrible beginning ended worse: I fainted (ME! FAINT?) in my office and of course the whole thing became a major dramatic production…hospital….X-rays….brain scans…that heart thing…lumbar puncture (don’t do that just to pass the time, anyone. It’s not utterly enjoyable). Anyway, I’ve sprained my ankle and my thumb (ludicrous!) and I don’t have a bleed in the brain or a dicky ticker, BUT here’s an alarming thing: yesterday I wore Samsara for pleasure and fun, only to find that it rather got in the way in hospital, and now I’m not sure I will ever wear it again. Hence (as my students insist on writing), Cristalle, surely the polar opposite of Samsara.
Also, before I entertained my colleagues by falling over, I had been down town and in passing tried the body lotion of the new Alaia perfume. Now that’s a gorgeous smell! Where the perfume on me is sweet violet-ish flowers, not awful but not entrancing eith nothing much going on, the body lotion made me want to sing. I didn’t, because there’s enough suffering in the world, but I did buy some.

Ta. As you say, pity about Samsara. Maybe I’ll wear it someday when (if ever) I hike into a strong wind. It can give pleasure to anyone behind me, and I might find its enveloping qualities appealing again.

Yikes. That is horrible. I only fainted once, and that was from stress when I was in law school and working and running an organization all at the same time…

I have a similar problem as your Samsara with Fracas, that I wore (stealthily) or just sniffed in the hospital over the year when my son was very sick. At the time my little purse roll-on was a “Calgon, Take Me Away” sort of thing… but now it is complicated and I frequently smell “hospital” when I get a whiff of it. But not always… and I can wear other big tuberoses fine.

I don’t know Fracas, but I’ve always meant to learn about it. It’s a pity when an association spoils a perfume love, but you know, I think I would rather the distance came about because of an event than because of recognising it on a person I didn’t warm to.

I’m going re-read the Chronicles of St Mary’s, I think. They’re mad and fun and will fill the day a bit. Cristalle is gorgeous. Helps.

It’s not, is it? I’ve developed a story that the faint was caused by an atypical migraine, and I’m pleased to say it’s getting some traction. People keep ringing –so kind! — and saying, “Are you….all right…?” I’m being brisk and crisp (like Cristalle) and probably completely untruthful????

Yes, thorough x 10. I don’t know…I think my story of an atypical migraine is as likely as anything else, actually. It’s not medical at all, but it accounts for the vicious headache and loss of vision. And thank you, yes, I’m good to go, in a hop-along kind of way.

I’m glad you’re ok. Fainting out of nowhere is scary and disconcerting. I have always been prone to fainting and it’s embarrassing, odd, makes me feel like crap, and makes me wonder every time, “WTF is wrong with me?” One of the manifestations of my anxiety problem is feeling like I’m about to faint so that doesn’t help either and sometimes feeling that way is just a migraine taking hold. I’m sorry your day got so much worse but I think your explanation is a very likely one if you had a headache in conjunction with it and your blood pressure and sugars were ok.

Sometimes fainting just “happens”. Once they’ve excluded any cardial or neurological causes as they have with you, you just need some recuperation time, lots of tea, 😉 , and patience with mother nature! Glad to hear you didn’t get hurt and even gladder that you are looking after yourself!

Well, my move is FINALLY complete (except for some unpacking). I arrived in North Carolina yesterday about 1 pm. I’m a bit fuzzy-brained till my sleep gets regulated.

    SOTD is Nasomatto Absinth.

After another NSTer’s moving experience, I strategized mightily about temperature control en route. Perfumes went into a box on the floor behind the driver’s seat, box of wine and misc fluids behind the front passenger seat. Back seats were folded forward (small SUV) and remaining personal items loaded in. Daytime the A/C was running, nights were cooler, and all around the load acted as insulation to prevent quick temperature changes. Box sat very low, with no sun exposure. So far so good, but time will tell as I work my way through the collection. 🙂 🙂 🙂

Oh I did a stupid, stupid, stooopid thing this morning. Thinking I was craving aldehydes, I applied some White Diamond….and knew I made a mistake instantly…so put on some Caron’s Pour Un Homme to counter the fizz with herbs…which was an even bigger mistake… and as I had to leave the house in a few minutes, I thought to drown it all out with Vent Vert…

This is NOT a good combination.

Back at home I have the day off and am gardening and hope to sweat off the miasma… the cure will need to be something very clean and bracing after my shower–Crystalle or I may I’ll even break out the little decant I got of Limette 37.

Anyone else ever make a dog’s breakfast of their perfume?

Probably I have, but the blending disasters I recall involved essential oils. I still used my unfortunate combinations, and they definitely resulted from trying to solve a smell problem by adding another smell that I thought would ‘counteract’ the problem smell. I’m thinking that we might have problem with our equation: + = –

“Ahhh. Hmmm.. it needs just one more thing,” which always seemed to peak my uncle’s interest. “Hot sauce!” and we’d pass around the Tabasco to douse the tiniest amounts of soup we could request without being rude. And if sometimes we had made it too hot to finish… ah well….

Finally getting around to testing HdP’s I Love Les Carottes this afternoon and now have a poll idea to suggest: name a fragrance where you hate one stage of the evolution but love it in a different moment. Do you still wear this fragrance? (Do you own it?)

I found the opening of Carottes…well gosh. I’m afraid I’m more or less with Kevin on this one (https://nstperfume.com/2010/11/24/honore-des-pres-i-love-les-carottes-perfume-review/ )…it even crossed my mind to wonder if my sample had gone rancid before I had a chance to try it. But: an hour in, I’m enjoying the scent much more. Now the question is, will I ever be willing to fight through the top notes to get here again??

I went with Hermes Jardin en Mediteranee today. It wasn’t a good choice. I was thinking it would be kind of a pick-me-up since I didn’t sleep well last night. But my sinuses have been acting up and making me just feel like crap all over, so it’s really been more irritating than anything.

I feel your pain. Allergies are kicking in from the ragweed. I’ve had a few miserable days. All I want to do is sleep. Hope you feel better soon.

Yeah, sinus problems suck. I’ve been living on Afrin and Nasocort nasal sprays which seem to help, temporarily anyway.

I’ve rather overdosed myself on sampling today. It’s hotter than I thought it would be. Some houses make scrubbable scents, some don’t, I know that, and here I am in too many unscrubbables. Piguet… the morning was Baghari (some industrial-cleaner-orange note in that one) and Bois Noir (I swear there’s oud in that). Now it’s Bandit and Casbah. I like them both, but holy cannoli what was I thinking, on a day like this…..

I’m curious if you’ve tried Future from that house, and if so, what did you think of it? I was curious about Baghari too.

I haven’t tried Future. From Baghari I got aldehydes (nice), a bit of amber (nice), and an odd note of candied orange that reminded me of industrial-cleaner-orange-scent. Strange.

That’s a bummer. I always wanted to try that Baghari but never got around to it. Thanks for the info. 🙂

SOTD TC Alahine from a sample which wore off by 10:30 AM. A beautiful scent but I guess dabbing as opposed to spraying is the problem. Sampling Venetian Bergamot by Tom Ford now. Based on other reviews that I read, I thought it would be awful but it’s not bad. Faint praise, I know.

You smell lovely. A good friend of mine wears that scent and she has very good taste in everything. 🙂

I sniffed this for a friend’s friend. Rather elegant powdery, floral savon.

Five sprays of Mouchoir de Monsieur? Lavender-citruses-CIVET! Then, powdery, soft floral very close to my forearm skin to sniff sniff sniff whilst at work…

Oh, gorgeous! So gorgeous, in fact, that now I seriously want to hobble off down town and see if I can find this anywhere.

It’s like Jicky with a twist in the later phases. They didn’t display it on the Guerlain counter here in Zurich, but the lady found it in the bottommost shelf. So, you might have to insist 😉

Worked at cleaning out closets today, so a perfect day to just use lots of moisturizer and test something I have never tried. FM musc ravaguer. Just a little bit on wrists and behind ears and OMG how is I have never tried this, worn this, bought this, lusted for this?
