Monday scent of the day 8/24

Posted by Robin on 24 August 2015 140 Comments

Paul Smith Eyewear campaign, 2014

Another weekend, gone! What fragrance are you wearing?

I'm wearing Paul Smith Story.

Reminder: this Friday, 28 August, as the summer winds down, wear a fragrance that says "Summer 2015" to you. (If it's winter where you are, wear a fragrance that says "Winter 2015" to you.)

And for those of you who like to plan ahead, see Scent of the day ~ Friday community projects 2015, where I'll try to always have the next five or six weeks mapped out in advance.

Carnal Flower. I just bought a travel spray and I am already yearning for a bottle. This is one of the Summer 2015 scents for me, along with Kerosene Unforsaken, Seville a l’Aube and BV Knot.

CF is perfection. I’m usually pretty stingy when it comes to pricey perfumes, but CF is worth every penny. You smell great!

Was sniffing various samples and got Floris Honey Oud on me so that’s what I’m wearing. I was planning on testing it when the weather was a bit more autumnal but whatever. It is one of the most gorgeous oud scents and it smells like there’s real oud in it (no traces of band-aid). Stunning

Trying out Olympic Orchids Javanica and what a lovely use of nutmeg in this creamy floral, I must say. I am beginning to think that if I had an opportunity to start my perfume journey over again, I would start with essential oils and niche and stay out of the mainstream almost entirely…….

But perhaps you needed to begin with mainstream so you could work your way into appreciating some niche stuff (not that there isn’t expensive niche dreck)

You are both right. It is just very disappointing and depressing to have very few places in my perfume desert to sniff any thing new or out of the mainstream. I hate samples, it is never enough and spraying and dabbing render almost completely different fragrances. I appreciate the luxury of spraying on paper, wait, try on skin, wait and then decide. That is a ritual I enjoy, but just do not have the opportunity to have. But enough of my cranky self!

Who are those peeps in the photo? They look vaguely familiar.

SOTD is Ninfeo Mio to help offset the sauna that is late August in the South.

    Where is autumn…?

It’s a still from the Paul Smith (UK designer) eyewear collection campaign in 2014. I can only identify two of the models: John Wiles (left) and Julia Nobis (center).

The same people who named his siblings Rain Bottom, Summer Bottom, Joaquin Bottom, and Liberty Bottom! The parents legally changed the last name to Phoenix sometime after they moved back to the U.S., according to The Source of All Knowledge (Wiki). Lots of creativity in that family ๐Ÿ™‚

Send that weather here- the entire state will thank you. I just realized today what NF reminds me of! I have been getting a tickle of familiarity ever since you introduced it to me and it was driving me crazy (don’t have to travel far to get to crazy in my case). It smells just like Publix (our grocery chain here in the swamps) Key Lime Fozen yoghurt! Delicious and so refreshing. Everything seems to revolve around food with me ๐Ÿ˜‰

I once worked for Lauder and I can say that they typically let the brands they acquire do their own thing without much interference. The influx of money just means they can quickly grow and expand the brand in ways that may not have been possible before – so this probably means more FM freestanding stores (as they did with the full acquisition of the Jo Malone brand), more scent launches, but not necessarily a tinkering with existing formulas. But time will tell the tale, eh? Fingers crossed, as I loves me some Carnal Flower.

I’m wearing Dzing! for the first time. Apparently you either love it or you hate it, and right now I’m not feeling the love. Maybe in the dry down? I’m getting the same musty notes that I get whenever I try to wear a fig scent. There are no figs in this, but something in the fragrance is pushing that button.

It isnt either love or hate for me. I like it enough to have a small bottle from years ago, but to be honest, your mention of it reminded me of that! I find it similar to Bvlgari Black, which I wear more often. I really should wear it again to see where it fits in my love to loathe scale now as I probably havent sniffed it for a good 2 years! :-/

Yes, similar to Black is how it strikes me too. Also SMN Nostalgia. (And actually, thinking of Dzing in the company of those two, I may have to take back what I just wrote below about not seeing the musty quality!)

How interesting. Full disclosure, I love Dzing, and figs, but I do know at least what you mean about the mustiness of some figs. I hadn’t noticed that quality in Dzing though–it makes me curious whether it could be a skin interaction thing. By chance have you smelled Dzing on paper? Does it strike you the same way?

I’m Keeping it Very Simple today with just some coconut vanilla body lotion as I finalize last minute details for our special birthday trip to Disney World with our Little Ones. It’s just the four of us; at almost-8 they’ve never been and we haven’t been in 30 years, so I hope the months-long preparations result in a lot of smiles for them and lifetime memories of special moments shared with Grandma and Grandpa long after we’re gone.

I’m only taking minis of L’Occitane verbena and Bvlgari Omnia Coral, just in case I have a moment to think about fragrance, or want to, because I know I will be exchanging our lovely early fall weather here for hot and sticky days ahead.

    Wishing everyone a wonderful week!

Drained my sample of Heeley Cuir Pleine Fleur this morning, and am hoping the post office website isn’t lying to me when it says my larger decant will be delivered today. Someone a few days ago mentioned Jolie Madame as a sort of sibling or cousin, and I think that’s spot-on, although CPF doesn’t have the slight fizziness that Jolie Madame has, and I think CPF has a tiny bit more leather. I REALLY like this one. (Santa, I can’t choose between Cuir Pleine Fleur and Ciel d’Opale – may I please have both??)

Perthgirl, I know that the new Pradas are coming to Auckland quite soon, so you’re bound to see them in Perth. I’m looking forward to the almond one especially, and I really want to try the carnation one too. Am sort of hoping they might be in Sydney next week, but my rule is not to buy anything when I’m travelling that I can pick up in A-NZ. They’d have to be in the “can’t-live-without-this” category for me to break that rule. On the other hand…almond!

Those fires are so truly awful. I hope the best for everyone. I camped once at Hell’s Canyon (Hat Point) and on the top you could see evidence of an old fire. It was eerie in the fog. I know the forest and fields eventually regenerate themselves, but it is just so massive.

Because it is the first day of school and the kids are coming back, I decided to wear my signature fragrance. My SOTD is Nectarine Blossom ad Honey by Jo Malone. This fragrance helps me keep a smile on my face and just brightens up my day.

Sampling CdG Luxe Champaca. I liked it better when I spritzed it on in a store a few weeks ago than I do this AM. This confirms my theory that most things smell better at the end of the day on “dirty skin” as it smelled sweeter, richer, and more exotic than it does after showering this am. Now it’s greener, more tuberosey, and slightly soapy. But still a nice white/yellow floral. Although kind of boring for a CdG.

      I agree!

Is that the luxe luxe luxe luxe, or the EdT? When I did this, I wore the xl one in the shop and the EdT from home, so that could also have something to do with it.

You all are just wonderful. In spite of the massive amounts of antihistamines I take, right now is sort of the peak of my allergy season, (golden rod and all the things that bloom at the same time!) so I think some of it is just allergic irritation in addition to the dwindling effects of that nasty virus ( which keeps traveling around the office – an office mate who NEVER gets sick is home today with the headache and fever beginning of it…), so, I have every confidence that a few more 55 degree nights and a thunderstorm or two to knock the pollen out of the air will have me back to my odor appreciation baseline…

Due to the gift that keeps on giving, the very first thing I do as soon as I arrive at my desk is to wipe down my work surface, phone, headset, keyboard, mouse (in reverse order actually but I’m too lazy to re-type). When something nasty is going around the office, it usually skips me and moves on to the next person. I have a sign up to tell the cleaning lady not to clean my desk (she uses the same dirty rag to wipe down everyone’s desks).

ร” Intense de Lancรดme for me today. I’m intending to compare it (via memory) with Eau de Givenchy and Eau de Caron, and maybe Eau de Guerlain later. A perfume pal raised an interesting question about these Eau de __________ (fill in name of house) scents, so I’m conducting whatever field tests I can source.

Anyone care to share thoughts on any Eaux de Maisons?

O, and if anyone can compare ร” Intense de Lancรดme with its non-intense pillar ร”, especially if vintage-ish, I’ll be thrilled!

Oops, built that up way too tall. It was something like, “How would you compare ร” de Lancรดme, Eau de Rochas and Eau de Givenchy? It seems that these three are often discussed together.” On hand I had the Givenchy and some unmentioned Eau de Caron, and that Caron was very much the odd man out, tarry lemony dusty vanilla (Caron’s answer to Shalimar? I only thought of that after writing those adjectives, not once during the wearing). So I got interested in the question.

I haven’t tried ร” Intense, but the various vintages of pillar ร” smell different, so it’s a complex question.

Two of my favorite citrus-y eaux are Eau de Guerlain and the Chanel LE Eau de Cologne. EdG gives me more herbs and florals and wears a bit longer, while the Chanel is smooth and glossy with more spice, then it smells like clean summer skin.

All ‘straighten up and fly right’ with me today to drop up my youngest baby at school this morning. 7th grade. (Yes, that whirring you’re hearing is the sound of my helicopter blades on high…) Needed something spine stiffening but easy, so went with Prada’s Infusion d’Iris. Husband’s comment? “Oh, you’re not wearing perfume today!”

Everyone smells so great today! I couldn’t decide what to wear, so for a while I just enjoyed the remnants of Tokyo Milk Dark Bulletproof that I put on last night (smoky tea and coconut, but the coconut is pretty subtle and just adds creaminess). Then I decided to try some samples that were sitting around – Dame Perfumery Dark Horse on one arm and Passion Fruit, Orange Blossom, and Vetiver on the other. OH MY GOODNESS I love Dark Horse. I can’t even tell what is in – well blended – it but I can’t stop sniffing my wrist ๐Ÿ˜‰

Dark Horse smells like a spicy vanilla to me. Almost like Black Flower with more spice, less citrus. It is nice.
Also, nice to see a mention of Tokyo Milk. I think her Dark series offered some affordable(cheap) scents that are much more interesting and fun than the mainstream offerings at Sephora.

It was a pretty perfume-full weekend for me. Fumie SIL is in town, so we dragged most of the family around to the CBIHP showroom, then the next day walked down Bleecker street for the Bond 9, AG and Diptyque boutiques. Whew!

After all that, this morning I drained my sample of metarboles. It is still barely there on skin, but clinging nicely to hair.

Interesting. We expected (from the address) that it would be the cute/hipster part of Williamsburg, and were surprised when it turned out to be the industrial/not yet gentrified part of Williamsburg. The downstairs neighbors definitely had an eau-de-cigarette thing going on. But the staff were lovely and it was fun to poke around and sniff stuff.

Aftelier Tango. I’m still sulking because it’s discontinued. It can still be special-ordered, but with a minimum of two bottles, and so it’s not practical. ๐Ÿ™

Have placed an order from eBay Germany–cross your fingers for that risky undertaking… Meanwhile, maybe you could mention Tango in the upcoming splitmeet? Maybe someone would like the other bottle!

Meanwhile I was thinking of you today, seeing the current Neiman’s bonus offer–$300 gift card with code NMAUG if you pull the trigger on Diaghilev today! For something practical ๐Ÿ˜‰
